El bien y el mal Good and evil in entrar a valorar si el karma existe o no, si esta basado en creencias espirituales o religiosas, lo que sí esta claro es que no es algo ético o moral, esta más relacionado con la psicología de las emociones. Nuestro comportamiento siempre tiene consecuencias y todas las acciones generarán una energía que nos será devuelta. Quizás no siempre nos cuestionemos demasiado nuestras propias actitudes y tendamos en general a responsabilizar al de enfrente, sin tan siquiera plantearnos que a lo mejor, la situación la hemos creado nosotros. Es común que ante una discusión, no nos planteemos nuestra forma de ser, simplemente arremetamos contra el otro sin darnos cuenta que en ocasiones nuestra propia inseguridad puede jugarnos malas pasadas. Llegamos incluso a ver enemigos donde no los hay y reflejamos en los demás nuestros propios temores. Esto nos lleva directamente al “bien y el mal”, no todos consideramos como buenas o malas las mismas cosas, nos influyen la cultura, las costumbres y el ámbito que nos rodea en sí mismo. Pero sí podemos definir como positiva toda acción que no perjudica a nadie, ni a tu propia persona ni a los demás y como negativa

aquella que te daña a ti o a terceros. Todos los sentimientos de amor, tolerancia y respeto conllevan energias positivas y por el contrario aquellos que odian, envidian y buscan venganzas concentran todas las energías negativas. El Karma es el juez de nuestros actos, aquello que sembremos es lo que cosecharemos. Cada uno de nosotros somos plenamente responsables de aquello que hacemos, de los errores y de los aciertos. Las leyes del Karma nos enseñan que tenemos la libertad suficiente para ser capaces de crear la realidad que deseamos. Queda claro no obstante que hay cosas que escapan a nuestro control. Cuando menos lo esperamos llega la adversidad. Ahora bien, en estos casos lo que cuenta es tu actitud hacia esos acontecimientos. El modo en que respondes también determinará su efecto. Así que hazlo, sé responsable de tu persona, de tus palabras, acciones y reacciones. Mirar hacia atrás y vivir anclados en el pasado es lo que nos impide disfrutar del presente. Centrémonos en el aquí y el ahora para lograr alcanzar la felicidad o al menos la armonía. Quien siembra odio recoge tempestades así que sería bueno ir por la vida plantando la semilla de la cordialidad para que todos podamos vivir en paz.

ithout thinking if karma does exist or not, or if it is based on spiritual or religious beliefs, what is clear is that it is not something ethical or moral, it is related to the psychology of emotions. Our behavior will always have consequences, and all actions generate an energy that will return to us. Perhaps we don’t usually analyze our attitudes, and we tend to blame the other side without even thinking that maybe we created the situation. It is common that before a discussion, we do not consider if we are wrong or not; we just keep attacking the others without realizing that maybe our insecurity could be playing tricks on us. We even see enemies where there are none, and we tend to reflect our fears on others. It immediately leads us to think about what is “good and evil”; not all of us consider the same things as good or bad, because our culture, customs, and our environment somehow define what we think about it. But we can say that the positive actions are the ones that do not harm anyone, neither your person; and the negatives are those that hurt you or third parties. All feelings of love, tolerance, and respect carry positive energies, but those who hate, envy, and seek revenge, spread all kinds of negative energies. Karma is the judge of our actions; we reap what we sow. Each one of us is fully responsible for what we do, for the mistakes and the successes. The Karma laws teach us that we have enough freedom to create the reality we desire. Nevertheless, there are things beyond our control. When we are not aware, adversity comes; and when it happens, what matters it’s your attitude towards those events. The way you respond will be crucial for its effect. So, do it, be responsible for your person, your words, actions, and reactions. Looking back and living anchored in the past is what doesn’t allow you to enjoy the present. Be focus on here and now to achieve happiness or at least harmony. Those who sow hatred reap storms, so it would be good to go through life planting the seed of cordiality so we all can live in a peaceful place.

En esa nueva urbe, urbanizada y con su propio ayuntamiento, se celebró la primera misa católica que marcaría la evangelización de América. La ofició con flagrante emoción Fray Bernardo Boil, acompañado de 12 sacerdotes. Los Reyes Católicos, Isabel y Fernando, encomendaron a Colón la misión evangelizadora. Una misiva que debía cumplir con santa obediencia para que aquellos habitantes tuvieran el mismo sentir religioso mayoritario que los pobladores de la corona de Castilla. Para dar cumplimiento a esta disposición en el segundo viaje de Cristóbal Colón fue enviado como delegado pontificio el monje Fray Bernardo Boil con la misión de instruir a los indígenas. Le acompañaban sacerdotes y laicos. El laico jerónimo más destacado fue Ramón Pané, quien hizo un gran recorrido por la isla en la labor catequizadora. El segundo grupo de agentes de pastoral estaba compuesto por misioneros franciscanos, quienes se dedicaron a la con-

historia history versión de los indígenas y a su enseñanza. Después llegaron los dominicos y dentro de ellos están Fray Pedro de Córdoba y Fray Antonio Montesinos. Estos al darse cuenta del trato que recibían los indígenas, no dudaron en denunciar la situación de injusticia y ponerse de parte del débil saliendo en su defensa. Los mercedarios y jesuitas llegaron más tarde. Actualmente, en el interior del nuevo y sencillo Templo las Américas, construido con piedra y ladrillos, hay imágenes religiosas de Jesús y la Virgen en pinturas y esculturas de gran colorido. La dimensión del templo se amplia y adquiere un matiz especial, cuando se efectúan ceremonias religiosas. Un jardín con frondosos árboles y bancos perfectamente colocados, para que el visitante descanse, rodea la iglesia, que miles de turistas visitan anualmente y que se impactan cuando les cuentan la leyenda del guayacán. Se dice que en la década de 1950, se limpió con un tractor el lugar donde está La Isabela y muchas de las ruinas fueron lanzadas al mar. Entonces, donde estaba el altar de la iglesia se conservó un árbol de guayacán, cuyas raíces abarcaban todo el espacio donde se hizo la primera eucaristía. Lo más insólito de la historia es que más de 500 años después, se ha convertido en una especie de santuario natural para los feligreses.

Then, where the church altar was, it was preserved a Guayacan tree, and its roots covered all the space where the first Eucharist happened. The most unusual thing is that now it is a kind of natural sanctuary for parishioners, more than 500 years later.

El Fuerte Navidad, donde había dejado a 40 hombres durante un año, para que establecieran relaciones económicas y personales con los nativos, estaba completamente devastado. No había otro camino que empezar de cero, pero montar la nueva ciudad en el mismo lugar no era factible por un previsible ataque de los taínos, así que exploró con calma la costa.

During a year he left forty men in Christmas Fort to establish economic and personal relationships with natives but instead of it, he found a destroyed settlement in his return. There was no option besides starting from scratch but setting the new city up in the same place was not convenient due to a new Taino attack, so he calmly explored the coast.

Sin embargo, unas fuertes tormentas tras pasar el puerto de Montecristi, le obligaron a refugiarse en un pequeño recodo natural, al amparo de la climatología, abierto al noroeste con una llanura repleta de vegetación y al sur con unas minas de oro que llamaban su deseo tenencia. Aunque Colón no pensaba quedarse de manera permanente porque mantenía su empeño por encontrar señales y pruebas de que se encontraba en Asia, la tripulación que llevaba más de tres meses en alta mar, desembarcó con visible alivio. Repartidos los solares y diseñado el urbanismo de la urbe, se construyó un templo, un hospital, un almacén de provisiones y una casa para el navegante italiano, todas ellas en piedra. El resto de viviendas, alrededor de doscientas, se construyeron en madera. El 6 de enero de 1494, Colón fundó oficialmente la villa de la Isabela, nombre en honor de la reina Isabel, con una misa oficiada por fray Bernardo Buil y en la que se designó a Antonio de Torres, persona de confianza del almirante, alcalde de la ciudad. De aquel momento histórico, del nacimiento de la primera ciudad del Nuevo Mundo hoy quedan vestigios evidentes en el Parque Nacional La Isabela Histórica, un espacio en el cual la belleza natural, la historia y los atractivos en su conjunto lo convierten en un área de esparcimiento único en República Dominicana. Desde Puerto Plata, hay diferentes touroperadores que ofrecen esta excursión. Las excavaciones realizadas en 1892, por un grupo de munícipes de Puerto Plata, descubrieron entre escombros, los restos arqueológicos de la ciudad. La población La Isabela, cabecera del municipio, se encuentra aproximadamente a dos kilómetros de la ciudad original que creó junto al océano Cristóbal Colón. Actualmente, dentro del parque se puede visitar el Museo Arqueológico La Isabela. Un viaje al pasado para conocer cómo fueron esas

El centro de interpretación reúne la información más relevante de la forma de vida de aquellos primeros colonos europeos. El templo de Las Américas, o santuario de Jesucristo Evangelizador, primera iglesia católica en suelo americano, también se localiza en dichos predios. Esta pequeña iglesia es una reconstrucción erigida sobre las ruinas de la antigua. El Parque, inscrito desde el año 2001, en la lista tentativa del Patrimonio Mundial de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura (Unesco) para ser declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad, el Gobierno ha desarrollado un plan de Gestión e Intervención para elevar el valor del conjunto de monumentos de esa región, como la primera calle que se construyó en el Nuevo Mundo, el llamado camino de los Hidalgos, construido por los españoles siguiendo una vía de acceso que habían hecho primero los taínos y que ahora la carretera va por ese antiguo sendero. Un paraíso tropical, con un legado de incalculable valor, que no tiene nada que envidiar a ningún otro lugar, ya que por ser una ciudad que se remonta a los días del descubrimiento del Nuevo Mundo, cada vez son más las miles de personas que lo visitan día tras día, para entender este viaje primigenio que marcaría la historia de América.

The interpretation center gathers the most relevant information about the lifestyle of those first European settlers. The temple of the Americas, or sanctuary of Jesus Christ the Evangelizer, the first Catholic church on America, is also located in these lands. This small church is a reconstruction erected on the ruins of the old one. The Park is on the World Heritage Tentative List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) since 2001 waiting for being declared a World Heritage Site. The Government has developed a Management and Intervention plan to raise the value of the monuments in that region, such as the first street built in the New World, the so-called Camino de Los Hidalgos. The Spaniards built it following an access road that the Tainos made first, and now the highway goes for that old footpath. It’s a tropical paradise with a legacy of incalculable value that has nothing to envy to any other tourist place. There are thousands of tourists that come to visit it day after day looking for the old day’s settlements of the New World to understand that first journey that would mark American history.

No dejes de hacer una visita al subsuelo del mercado, donde hay túneles que servían como depósito de mercadería y de esclavos en la época de la colonia. En la tarde no dejes de ir a la playa de Porto Da Barra, ya que es la única de la ciudad orientada hacia el Oeste, lo que hace que la puesta de sol sea un verdadero espectáculo. Para cenar puedes ir a Río Vermelho, un barrio bohemio muy popular, donde encontrarás una interesante variedad de locales gastronómicos mientras los ritmos suaves, agresivos o escandalosos de las cadencias de raíces africanas se mezclan en el ambiente, con los sonidos bailables de la samba reggae y de la axé music o la percusión enfebrecida de atabaques, agogós y berimbaus.

SI TIENES MÁS TIEMPO Aunque las playas de Salvador, salvo la de Porto da Barra y Farol de Barra, no son aptas para el baño debido a la contaminación, puedes alquilar un vehículo y desplazarte al norte para descubrir tres que merecen la pena. La primera es la playa Itapuá. Tiene aguas verdes con algunas piscinas naturales y su arena es clara. La segunda es la playa Stella Maris. En ella se encuentran varios trechos protegidos por arrecifes. Es frecuentada por surfistas ya que tiene buenas olas. Por último, la playa Flamengo. Tiene un estilo rústico, rodeada de palmeras y dunas es una playa bastante jovial y también frecuentada por surfistas. Otra recomendación es ir a la Costa dos Coqueiros. Para ello recorrerás la carretera turística BA-99, desde aeropuerto internacional de Salvador hasta la Praia do Forte. A continuación y hasta Mangue Seco, en la frontera con el Estado de Sergipe, al norte, toma el nombre de Línha Verde, la primera carretera ecológica de Brasil. Aproximadamente, 185 kilómetros de un litoral jalonado de cocotales, de ahí su nombre y que se compara paisajísticamente, con la Polinesia francesa. A través de ella se accede a pequeñas comunidades como Imbassaí y Arembepe, docenas de playas como las de Guarajuba, Buraquinho…, algunas casi vírgenes como la de Barra do Itariri, Incluso de puro exotismo con dunas de arena blanca y mar abierto como Massarandupió.

SANTO CRISTO EN BAYAGUANA Fruto de las históricas devastaciones de Osorio en la región norte de la isla, por aquel entonces, de Santo Domingo, la población, específicamente en Puerto Plata, los pueblos de Bayahá y Yaguana, inicia un largo peregrinaje hasta fundar en 1606, la comunidad de Bayaguana. Situada en la provincia Monte Plata, con una posición geográfica privilegiada en el Noreste del país, que les permite comunicarse con los pueblos del Norte y del Este, además, del directo intercambio de culturas, costumbres, hábitos, tradiciones, músicas y folklores. Ahora bien, ¿cuál es el punto de partida de la veneración al Santo Cristo de los Milagros? La historia oral, viva en Bayaguana, mantiene en el imaginario de sus pobladores que una fuerte sequía que azotó la región fue la fuente que originó la devoción. De hecho, algunos ganaderos tomaron la iniciativa de donar y ofrecer becerros al Santo Cristo para que con sus poderes trajera la lluvia. decidieron erigir un Santuario. Una obra que comenzara a construirse por el Padre Ambrosio Caraballo en el año 1789 y que se terminó de manos del Padre Juan de Jesús Fabián y Ayala. Su estilo es colonial y la parroquia está dedicada a San Juan Bautista, porque también contribuyeron a su fundación los habitantes de San Juan de la Maguana. La imagen, tallada en madera y con un tamaño de más de un metro de largo, representa a Cristo crucificado. Su construcción es acabada y las facciones de su cara son perfectas, sin notarse en él desproporción. La figura se encontró sin cruz y fue gracias al fervor de los feligreses que se elaboró una cruz de madera. Los brazos los conforman unas bisagras de metal a modo de goznes, lo que indica que se construyó para celebrar el descenso del Señor y colocarlo en el Santo Sepulcro. En torno a este lugar santo, se han desarrollado algunas manifestaciones religiosas como las peregrinaciones el primer viernes de cada mes. A lo largo del año se festejan la celebración de los milagros, puesto que muchos, confiando en el poder de la figura han implorado sanaciones a enfermedades. En 1928 se construyó la torre y el atrio actual, y la oficina de Patrimonio Cultural lo declara en 1981 Patrimonio Nacional. Por el Jubileo del año 2000, fue declarado Centro de Peregrinación e Indulgencias plenarias. El 1 de enero de 2006, al celebrar los 400 años, por decreto del Papa Benedicto XVI, es declarado en Jubileo e Undulgenci Plenaria. Desde entonces, un nuevo templo se construye en un área de 150 hectáreas donadas por un devoto del Cristo, obra del Arzobispado de Santo Domingo y del Gobierno. La peregrinación al Santo Cristo está compuesta por dos redes que cubren los puntos geográficos del Norte y del Este. El acto de promesa es el ofrecimiento del creyente para realizar una obra piadosa. El tipo y la naturaleza de la promesa son muy variados desde llevar un velón al Santuario hasta ir al santuario a pie con un determinado vestido o traje, con un paño amarrado en alguna parte del cuerpo con dinero… La celebración de las festividades de veneración al Santo Cristo de los Milagros ha convertido a Bayaguana en uno de los principales enclaves de manifestación religiosa y de fe del pueblo dominicano. Manifestación que está representada por un conjunto de actos ceremoniales y rituales religiosos que se mezclan con lo popular.

Su comportamiento violento se constata en el uso que hacen de sus colmillos largos y potentes, y en los movimientos de su abdomen, preludio de su dramática sacudida en la piel humana cuando muerden intensamente produciendo graves irritaciones en la epidermis. En general, muchas personas creen que la picada de una cacata mata, pero aunque su veneno no es letal puede ser muy doloroso. Por eso, se recomienda tener mucho cuidado en tener contacto con estos arácnidos. Su nombre científico es Phormictopus cancerides, pero en el país se conoce como cacata. Esta especie de tarántula, nombre que procede del italiano tarentola y alude a la ciudad de Tarento, en Apulia, región italiana meridional en cuyo clima mediterráneo son abundantes, tiene en su variedad caribeña a uno de los arácnidos más grandes de América Latina. Habitan en las selvas tropicales y en algunas zonas arias de las Indias Occidentales. También se han registrado grandes números de esta especie de araña terrestre en las selvas tropicales de Brasil.

Los ritmos Ultradianos (del latín ultra, que significa más allá y dies, que significa «día») son ritmos que duran menos de 24 horas. Muchas de las funciones fisiológicas del organismo humano son un ejemplo de ritmo ultradiano. Los Circadianos (del latín circa, que significa alrededor de, y dies, que significa día) duran aproximadamente 24 horas. Por ejemplo: el ciclo sueño-vigilia o el movimiento de las hojas. Los inicios de la Cronobiología datan del siglo XVIII. El astrónomo Jean Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan mantenía un seguimiento de los movimientos diarios de las hojas de Mimosa. En sus experimentos, logró demostrar que las hojas seguían oscilando siguiendo el ritmo circadiano, es decir, con oscilaciones de las variables biológicas en intervalos regulares de tiempo, incluso en una oscuridad permanente. Científicos famosos como Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland, Carl von Linné y, por último el más importante, Charles Darwin observaron un fenómeno rítmico similar. Pero no fue hasta el siglo XX cuando la investigación científica sobre la cronobiología se inició gracias a Wilhelm Pfeffer, Erwin Bünning, Karl von Frisch, Jürgen Aschoff, Colin Pittendrigh, y Arthur Winfree que fueron los pioneros. Dependiendo de nuestro cronotipo o ritmo circadiano, es decir, de si somos matutinos o vespertinos, vamos a tener un máximo rendimiento a distintas horas del día. Por eso, la práctica de deporte nos ayuda a sincronizarnos. Eso sí, contralando el momento de la jornada en que se ejecuta. Hay que evitar el ejercicio físico vigoroso o intenso, como puede ser el spinning, unas dos horas antes de ir a dormir. Después de su práctica, nuestros músculos están todavía inflamados y con estrés oxidativo, lo que dificulta el inicio del sueño. Los expertos aseguran que las personas que no se mueven en todo el día, y, por tanto, no les da la luz natural, tienen más problemas de sueño, entre ellos, el llamado retraso de fase, que se caracteriza por un tiempo de inicio y finalización del sueño que está retrasado más de dos horas, generalmente, en relación con los tiempos de sueño aceptables social o convencionalmente. The Infradian rhythms (from the Latin infra, meaning under and dies, which means day) are those that last more than 24 hours. They have a frequency of a few days, weeks, months, or even once a year. A good example is the seasonal rhythms. The Ultradian rhythms (from the Latin ultra, meaning beyond and dies, meaning “day”) last less than 24 hours. Many physiological functions of the human organism have an ultradian rhythm. The Circadians (from Latin circa, meaning around and dies, meaning day) last approximately 24 hours. For example, the sleepwake cycle or the movement of the leaves. The Chronobiology beginnings date from the eighteenth century. The astronomer Jean Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan kept track of the daily movements of the Mimosa leaves. In his experiments, he demonstrated that the leaves continued to oscillate following the circadian rhythm, that is, with oscillations of the biological variables at regular intervals of time, even in permanent darkness. Famous scientists such as Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland, Carl von Linné and, finally, the most important, Charles Darwin, observed a similar rhythmic phenomenon. But it was not until the 20th century that scientific research on chronobiology began thanks to Wilhelm Pfeffer, Erwin Bünning, Karl von Frisch, Jürgen Aschoff, Colin Pittendrigh, and Arthur Winfree who were the pioneers. Depending on our chronotype or circadian rhythm, that is, if we prefer morning or evening, we will reach our highest performance at different times of the day. Hence, practicing sports help us to synchronize ourselves. Of course, we need to focus on the time of the day you need to be active. It is not advisable to do physical exercises, such as spinning, about two hours before going to sleep. After this practice, our muscles are still inflamed and have oxidative stress, which does not help to sleep. In contrast, yoga can be practiced in that time slot because of its relaxing exercises, which are compatible with sleep. For teenagers, it is best to practice sports during the early hours of the morning, because they already suffer from a phase delay. Experts say that people who don’t do any exercise throughout the day, and don’t receive natural light, have more sleep problems, including the so-called phase lag, which means that the time of onset and completion of sleep which is delayed more than two hours, compared to socially or conventionally acceptable sleep times. n deseo extravagante es antojarse de canquiña, un dulce delicioso que pone en valor la dominicanidad por su popularidad. Alargado, con unas partes más flexibles a modo de gominola y otras más duras, es aquel caramelo que a los dominicanos les evoca su más tierna infancia ya que nunca faltaba, décadas atrás, cuando la gente de los pueblos visitaban la capital. Se vendían en las estaciones de autobuses y en las paradas de estos en las diferentes provincias. Y es que como dicen algunos el adulto que cuando niño no degustó este dulce no tuvo una infancia completa. Las canquiñas forman parte incluso, de las añoranzas de los dominicanos residentes en otros países cuando evocan los recuerdos de su tierra natal. Nada alegraba más a un niño que escuchar una campana o el sonido que hacían los pregoneros al hacer sonar su bandeja con el cucharón o el cuchillo con el que servían o cortaban sus dulces. Esa era la señal que les alertaba para ir corriendo hacia sus padres, tíos o abuelos a pedir unos centavos para comprar una canquiña y degustarlo con calma y paciencia con los amigos. Hoy en día son pocos los lugares donde se pueden encontrar las clásicas canquiñas, este dulce preñado de sabor que siempre viene envuelto en papel de rayas transversales.

Porque República Dominicana es por antonomasia una tierra dulce, abundante en el cultivo de la caña y por ende del guarapo, es normal que el aroma de la melaza se impregne en todo el país. Así en la fertilidad de las grandes plantaciones, la industria del azúcar está arraigada a la de la propia cultura y a la de los dulces, como el caso de este. Su elaboración es sencilla, con sólo unos pocos ingredientes, leche de coco, azúcar crema, unas gotas de limón y algo de vainilla para aromatizar. El secreto de su apetecible color blanquecino se encuentra en el gesto de estirar repetidamente la masa colgada y tibia hasta que clarea. Su forma final de vara (rama de una planta) hace que en el argot popular se use para mencionar al que recibe una paliza. También la emplean como una forma jocosa de llamar al sexo. A partir de aquí hay algunas variaciones de este dulce, como el caso de la marqueta, una especie de canquiña azucarada que se hace jalándolo, despues de ser preparado con leche de coco. Tradiciones que al borde de perderse en el abismo del recuerdo, luchan por mantenerse con vida como parte de la idiosincrasia del dominicano.

From here, there are some adaptations of this candy, like the marqueta that is a kind of sweetened canquinaña made by stretching it after being prepared with coconut milk. Si te dejas guiar por el Feng Shui, los colores son la forma más sencilla de mejorar el ambiente y convertir cada espacio en un lugar más positivo. El blanco siempre se asocia a algo puro e inocente. Sin embargo, introduce algunos toques de otros colores para atraer la energía. Las enseñanzas orientales consideran al negro como un color positivo porque se asocia con la riqueza y la abundancia. La dimensión del espacio es un aspecto clave. Si una habitación es pequeña se recomienda elegir colores que no sean muy intensos, preferiblemente fríos. Así, los clásicos como Juan Bosch y Marcio Veloz Maggiolo, grandes pensadores de República Dominicana estuvieron presentes en el madrileño parque del Retiro junto a obras de sociólogos, arqueólogos, juristas, periodistas o actores; todos ellos encargados de reconocer a su país y las relaciones de este con la literatura. Bentley afirma haber mejorado el flujo de aire de la calefacción dinámica para el cuello integrado en los asientos delanteros, amén de llevar calefactados volante, asientos y hasta el apoyacodos. Por supuestos los asientos van también climatizados y con reglaje eléctrico, y en opción hasta pueden lucir un tapizado en punto de cruz hecho a mano. De serie (si se puede hablar de “serie” en un coche artesanal como éste) hay 17 colores de carrocería, aunque opcionalmente se puede escoger entre una gama más amplia de 70 e incluso con colores personalizados.
