elcome to the final and biggest issue of the year as Bahrain This Month goes festive! We’re truly jam-packed from cover-to-cover with interviews, features, advice and entertainment as we tie a neat bow around 2023, whilst not forgetting to look ahead to what 2024 brings. It’s been another memorable year and we have been there every step of the way to bring you the highest quality, most trustworthy content from our talented team of journalists. Our digital platforms have also seen record levels of growth thanks to engaging and insightful social media content. This December, we’ve got a real festive hamper for you! With the triple treat of National Day, Christmas and New Year, it would be remiss of us not to celebrate this truly wonderful time of year. We’re on the button when it comes to the latest Happenings, with an extensive list of events curated for you and the family to celebrate the season in style. Of course, Bahrain’s 52nd National Day is an opportunity to celebrate everything that is amazing about this beautiful island that we call home. We reveal Bahrain’s Best Kept Secrets for those looking for unique exploration opportunities, whilst Farah Baig took a walk along Muharraq’s Pearling Path with tourism expert Khalid Al-Mushari and discovered its rich cultural heritage. You’ll find plenty to read in our interview section this month. We spoke to both Thai Ambassador, HE Piyapak Sricharoen, and Korean Ambassador, HE HeonSang Koo, about their respective countries’ friendly relationships with Bahrain and their plans to bolster ties, whilst we also made a pit stop at SMS Design and Performance to sit down with Salah Salahuddin and discuss his car customisation business and his treasured world record. Not only that, but we had a knockout chat with Mohammed Shahid, President of the Brave Combat Federation, and received some sparkling insight from Guido Damiani, President of the Damiani Group, and David Tedeschi, Hublot’s Regional Director for Latin America & Caribbean, Middle East and Africa, at the hugely successful Jewellery Arabia event. Of course, we have our usual suite of monthly staples, such as dining where Edwin D’Souza checked out the delectable delights of the Chandini Chowk Festival at the Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa, motoring where Kristian Harrison shares his memorable experiences with the Ferrari 296 GTS and GTB in Dubai, and commerce where Pria Masson looks ahead to the key trends shaping the business industry in 2024.
December also brings Bahraini Women’s Day, and in Woman This Month we have even more insightful interviews with lawyer Siddiqa Al-Mawali and the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre. They discuss their inspiring stories and how they are helping the women of Bahrain, whilst we also took a walk in the shoes of Wadeeah Al Ali, General Manager of boutique business consultancy firm Brassfield. Proving to be a shining example of the creative talents of Bahraini women is Noor AlMaskati, the Owner and Brand Designer of La Noor. Finally, our parenting columnist Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips on how to ease the difficulties of separation with your children. Thank you once again, dear readers and followers, for all of your support during the year and we will be proud to be ‘Your Guide to a Great Way of Life’ through 2024 and beyond!

NATIONAL DAY WISHES FOR THE ROYAL FAMILY
Al Arayedh Group Holding (AAGH), one of the Kingdom’s oldest and most iconic family-owned businesses, extends its best wishes to His Majesty King Hamad and the rest of the Royal Family on the occasion of Bahrain’s 52nd National Day.
I
t has been another highly successful year for AAGH, which is known for its innovative efforts across generations that have made a significant impact on Bahrain’s business development. Not only that, but the group has expanded its core business real estate to great success. Nasser Al Arayedh, Chairman of AAGH, believes that the group is in a stronger position than ever. “In 2023 we have been able to improve and recover losses from previous years and we were able to achieve higher earnings compared to the previous year’s hit by the pandemic,” he explains. He attributes a lot of this success to Bahrain’s renowned business-friendly nature. Mr. Al Arayedh says: “The opportunities in Bahrain and the wider region are plenty. I believe that Bahraini companies need to take advantage of the opportunities provided in the region because there has never been a time to be more proactive. It is the time to be innovative and forward thinking, as the growth of activities and the presence of international firms shows the potential which exists in the region. “Bahraini companies are at even more of an advantage thanks to the leadership headed

by HE King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. They have provided the full support for the private sector in order to become the main engine for the economy. We are extremely thankful to them, and thus I extend my most heartfelt wishes on behalf of the entire group on the occasion of National Day.” AAGH’s main segment looking forward into 2024 is in real estate investment, which is not surprising considering the scope of property expansion currently happening in Bahrain and the number of lucrative opportunities available. Mr. Al Arayedh is confident that 2024 will bring even more success to the company and that it is fully focused on achieving its goals. “We have projects relating to retail and housing which are in the pipeline and once we receive building permits, we will start construction hopefully by the end of next year,” he explains. “We are extremely positive about 2024 as we see the global economy improving with
controlled inflation and we have expectations of lower interest rates which should help to stimulate the economy in Bahrain and increase the activity as the cost of borrowing will decrease. “However, it is not only next year which we are excited about. Over the coming three to five yea§rs we are increasing our investments in real estate, especially projects which will cater to people who are coming to Bahrain. At the same time, we are looking into increasing regional and international investments which will seek good returns for the group. “We believe that investment both within Bahrain and offshore is a positive step for us. We ensure that we look for opportunities to generate income when they arise, and sometimes they come in the wider region. The ultimate objective is to sustain growth of the group and diversify our sources of income.”

Muharraq has long been known for being a cultural hub in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This month, Farah Baig went on a walking tour through the city with Khalid Al-Mushari, who was recently certified by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). Bahrain’s rich culture, heritage and traditions were experienced firsthand.
T
he city of Muharraq has a rich and storied history, having been the epicentre of Bahrain’s bustling pearling industry in the early days. In fact, Muharraq’s spectacular Pearling Path, which encompasses 330,000sqm, is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list due to its historic significance in the Kingdom. With Bahrain’s National Day soon approaching, it only felt natural to traverse the Pearling Path and experience it through the eyes of Khalid Al-Mushari, the Bahraini behind Trip Advisor’s #1 Walking Tour in Bahrain. So, with my most comfortable walking shoes on, I eagerly joined Khalid for a long walk discovering the many historical houses, winding streets, stunning architecture and even unique food while Khalid shared his story and several interesting facts about this beautiful Kingdom.
DISCOVERING MUHARRAQ
With Khalid we discovered several sites and attractions restored and developed by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA). He explains that the Pearling Path includes three oyster beds, 17 buildings and the seafront Bu Maher Fortress, each having played a significant role in Bahrain’s pearling trade. While sitting on the rooftop of a unique bookstore in Souq Al Qayssareyah, offering stunning views of Muharraq, Khalid explains: “I chose Muharraq as my focus because I believe it’s the source of all things Bahrain, culturally and economically. It was Bahrain’s first city and capital up to the year 1923, according to most sources, and really has a stellar cultural value. if you want to trace anything in Bahrain to its original state, it will always come back to Muharraq.” As the evening progressed, we discovered the Mohammed bin Faris House for Vocal Music, Nukhidhah House, and even picturesque gardens unique to Muharraq. “Muharraq used to be extremely green and these gardens used to provide an area for pearl divers to meet and get some respite following

their return. Muharraq and Bahrain, in general, used to be very green, a fact that is demonstrated by one of Muharraq’s sites which houses several trees that thrive in Bahrain’s climate,” he explains. During the tour we discovered the role of the various aspects of the pearl trade, including the role of the captain, the process of diving and even its trade. That being said, aside from the historical aspect we enjoyed delicious food that have either grown to be favourites about residents, or are steeped in culture. This included Aloo Basheer’s hot samboosas, khubus jibin (cheese bread) hot out the oven, and, of course, cups of qahwa (coffee) and dates. “If I had to mention my top three foods, I’d say mahyawa, which is Bahrain’s fish sauce that locals and expats love; Bahraini tikka, whether beef or chicken; and Dhai Puri, which isn’t Bahraini but quite popular here,” he laughs. “It’s the number one walking tour for a reason,” says Khalid with a smile. “It was important to me to introduce people to the Kingdom’s architecture, music, food, art, customs and heritage. I’d advise anyone visiting or living in Bahrain to walk through Muharraq and discover it with me.”

WHO IS KHALID?
VISITING BAHRAIN
While chatting away with Khalid, you can’t help but be inspired by his pride in Bahrain’s culture, but he admits that he wasn’t always as well-versed in the subject. “I used to be an English teacher and actually lived and taught in countries across South America and parts of Asia. It was through this experience that I had actually discovered that my knowledge was lacking when it came to cultural aspects of Bahrain,” says Khalid.

According to Khalid, most travellers instantly consider Dubai when thinking of the Middle East. “They never think about Bahrain as a tourist destination,” he says.
“My students would ask me ‘What is out there to do there in Bahrain when it comes to culture?’ and I’d always be ashamed when asked that question as I had not done anything cultural before. So, I promised myself that, when I’d return to Bahrain, I would explore its culture and all of its historical sites,” he narrates. Khalid not only discovered these sites but vowed to share his new-found knowledge with as many people as possible. “When I returned in 2019, I went everywhere and indulged myself in my culture, my identity as an Arab… I’m so proud of it now and naturally decided to become a tour guide,” he says.
“If one were to plan a short visit here, they could focus on select historical sites to experience our culture. I would recommend they definitely visit Muharraq, but also Bahrain Fort – which used to be the Dilmun Capital once upon a time – and the National Museum,” he adds. Khalid believes that the development of additional transportation could be the key to supporting Bahrain’s tourism sector. “If we take care of our public transportation and we add metros, public taxis and buses, I think there is potential for more tourists to come to Bahrain and explore it freely,” he explains. As we wrapped up three blissful hours of strolling in Muharraq, Khalid enthusiastically says: “I’ve seen that when people visit or move to Bahrain, they are pleasantly surprised by just how open-minded Bahrainis are and how welcoming our culture is. I strongly believe that in that sense Bahrain is a hidden gem, and I welcome people from around the region and across the world to come and experience how culturally rich and welcoming Bahrainis are. Come and explore Bahrain!”
This proved to be a turning point for Khalid who was recently certified by the UNWTO for a course organised by The World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations and Bahrain Tourism & Exhibition Authority (BTEA). “I was really honoured to have been selected according to my experience as a tour guide. I learnt a lot and thank my professors and Ministry of Tourism for supporting me in this journey because my passion is to show people how culturally diverse Bahrain is,” he says. “Every country that I travelled to or lived in introduced me to different languages and ways of living, allowing me to discover aspects of myself which I would never know if I lived my whole life in Bahrain. My international experience allowed me to discover aspects of myself and encouraged me to appreciate Bahrain’s culture more,” he says. Scan to watch the full interview

interview
Life in the Fast Lane Salah Salahuddin has been a passionate petrolhead since his youngest days, and has made huge contributions to Bahrain’s car scene with both his exploits on the drag racing strip and his customisation business, SMS Design and Performance. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to find out more.
When did you first take an interest in cars and how did it shape your career? I started at a very young age by drawing cars. My Dad had a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, an amazing V8 which really grabbed my attention. My uncle was also a car nut, and I used to hang out at my grandmother’s house where his garage was. My cousins and I would always play around and under these cars, which is where I found a fascination with the mechanics of them and how they work. This progressed to my teen years messing with remote controlled cars and modifying them, before this extended to my first car, a handme-down Land Cruiser which I turned into the coolest-looking Land Cruiser around! People then started asking me how I managed it and thus the car consultancy began. I went to the United States and starting building cars and putting them on the show circuit while racing on weekends. I did this for nearly a decade and it fuelled my passion even more.
Could you tell us about your achievements in Bahrain’s drag racing scene? Bahrain’s drag racing scene started in 2004 but really, I’ve been doing it for 32 years mostly paying out of pocket without sponsorship. Of course, I have won many races and even set records, but I’d say my main success is supporting younger drivers, sponsoring gokarters, painting their helmets and giving them confidence.
One record you did set is particularly special to you; can you tell us more? In 2017, I set a record of 7.5 seconds in the quarter mile in a Ford with a naturally

aspirated V8 small block engine, meaning it doesn’t rely on any kind of aid from a turbo, supercharger or nitrous oxide. It still stands today and I’m incredibly proud as I’d spent over a year and a half collecting parts and fine tuning the car.
Tell us about SMS Design and Performance and how you got the idea to start in Bahrain. One of the main problems in this industry is when you want to complete a car with modifications, it involves taking it to so many different places, often five or more, until it’s done, by which times other things break or lose performance and tracking it is a nightmare. So I thought: “Why doesn’t anybody have a shop that can do everything?” That’s where the idea for SMS came from.
Once, I bought a 1966 Mustang and a friend of mine visited the shop to have a look at it. A couple of months later, I decided to clean the car and opened the glove compartment. I pulled the papers out, and I found out that the first owner of the car was my friend’s fatherin-law. I told him and he immediately wanted to buy it. We finished customising it and it looked like brand new 66 model but with a modern engine, transmission, AC etc. We then unveiled it for his wife as a gift and it was very emotional for them as a family.

How do you inspire yourself to continuously customise cars in a way that stays relevant? In this line of business, the variety is enough to keep me going. I channel that excitement of what the next project is going to be and I find ways to think outside the box, never copying anything else I’ve seen. It’s hard work and requires dedication and patience, as well as expertise. The number one requirement to work here is to be a car enthusiast and everyone I’ve hired is hand-picked based on their passion. Collectively, my staff has more than 400 years of experience combined with cars, which is an incredible amount.

REVOLUTIONISING
The Brave Combat Federation stands as one of Bahrain’s greatest sporting achievements, becoming one of the biggest forces in the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). This month, we sat down with Mohammed Shahid, the President of Brave, to find out the secrets behind its huge success.
MMA
Could you talk about the history and background of Brave, as well as its major achievements and milestones? Brave was founded by HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa in 2016, but the idea came much earlier from a love of MMA. In 2014, Shaikh Khalid decided to form the KHK MMA team which included some of the biggest superstars of the sport such as Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev, who is today the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. We took athletes from different parts of the world, combined them together and gave them the resources and support needed to raise their professional athletic profile to the level of football, tennis, cricket and any other sport you can think of. It worked because Bahrain is ranked as the number one team in the world today. It wasn’t enough to do this for 10 to 15 athletes, but rather we wanted to do it for 10,000 out there in the world. That was our vision and Brave was the media property we required to realise it, starting with our very first event on September 23, 2016. The rest is history, including two annual events in Bahrain and many more internationally including Europe.

interview Did you ever imagine that it would come this far over the years? Absolutely. As the famous Conor McGregor says: “We’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over.” We live by that mentality and it was always our goal to change the system. It wasn’t just a question of leading, it was a question of revolutionising it.
In terms of the regional growth of the sport, how do you believe that the key activities and events of Brave have contributed to its growth and development? There are three areas, one is national, one is regional, and one is global. At the national level, we’ve never seen sporting achievements in Bahrain on this level in history, with poundfor-pound fighters and the team being number one in the world. Regionally, Bahrain is now taking the presidency of the Asian MMA Federation. The Brave Combat Federation is the official partner of International Mixed Martial Federation and we’ve never had any Bahraini organisation that could become the official partner of an international sports governing body until now. Globally, we must look at the skills development of the officials. We’ve seen this with F1 where the operations team and marshals have set standards and are used to train others at difference races around the world. We are strongly focused on the grassroots level and it is from this desire that this year, the Bahrain Mixed Martial Arts Federation became the official operations team that’s going to lead all the international world championships, Asian championships, European championships and more.
Would you say that Brave has been quite essential in changing the perception of the sport in the region, especially on a cultural level? Absolutely. We’ve used MMA as an education factor for the youth of our country. Combat sports keep kids off the street and out of trouble around the world, and parents are now starting to realise it’s a legitimate avenue for their children too. Not only that, but Brave is the largest exposure platform for Bahrain as well. There’s no other product in the country that has been exported to 30 countries around the world and being broadcast in 160 countries and 848 million households.
What is your process of acquiring and recruiting fighters? We have a team that’s crazy about MMA and watch every single fight from every organisation. You definitely need those with their hands in the dirt! We’re always on the lookout for amateur talents and with how popular MMA is these days, it’s easier to find those talents than it was previously.
Could you name any Bahraini athletes in the realm of MMA that we need to keep an eye on? Bahrainthismonth.com
Of course there is first and foremost Hamza Kooheji. You can’t speak about MMA and Bahrain without mentioning Hamza. He is one of the best in the world today, becoming the number one bantamweight fighter, in his weight class, in all of the Middle East and top five worldwide.
example and that the leader should never ask something of you if he won’t go through that himself. Whether it’s a thousand push ups, a 10km run or anything else, you always have to live in the uncomfortable zone.
There’s also Hussain Ayyad who has been there from the beginning of Brave and he’s really hitting his peak now. In his last fight, he broke his leg and that experience changed him into a better athlete. He’ll be making his return on December 15 and we cannot wait to see him back. Of course, it’s not always about that glamour and great media personalities, as you need to have those cold-hearted fighters who only care about going and destroying the person in front of you. That’s what we have in Abdulla Yaqoob, who is one of those guys who will always surprise you. Once, he was fighting in Bahrain and we lost him for a week. Literally, nobody knew where he was including his team and the organisation. He returned just before his fight, never revealed where he was, then won his fight.
How does the federation engage with fans and audiences? The sports industry is getting more digitalised and that is the future. We love live sports of course, but combat sports is slightly different because it is one of the best friends of broadcasters when it comes to content. We created our own OTT platform called Brave TV, which is available on the Apple Store and Play Store. We have a very active YouTube and use our socials to push fight content and interviews to all our fans.
Tell us about the events you have coming up in December! We have three events happening in December, including Brave 77 on December 5 featuring two title fights. On December 8 we have Brave 79 and then December 15 is going to be a fully public open event, Brave 80.
Having been a fighter and a coach, what would you say are the best qualities that being a trained fighter instils in a person? I would say to anyone who wants to train as a fighter to take that walk into the cage once in your life. Not even to become a professional but just to experience that feeling. To be the best, you have to go through everything and the mentality of what it is to be the greatest athlete in the world. Becoming the greatest fighter is always different from becoming the greatest athlete because we don’t ‘play’ fighting. You could play football, you could play cricket, but you can’t play MMA, so it’s much more different from any other sports that exist. It is 90 percent mental and 50 percent physical and you will never be able to balance that to 100 percent. You have to be more than that. I also strongly believe in leadership by

BUILDING BRIDGES TOWARDS A BRIGHT FUTURE The Republic of Korea and the Kingdom of Bahrain have a storied and successful history of cooperation and friendship. interview Can you share your experience in diplomatic service and how it has led you to your current role as the Korean Ambassador to Bahrain? Quite unusually for an ambassador, I started my public career as an economic officer in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Over the course of my 30-year tenure in the ministry, I assumed various responsibilities to support the balanced development of my homeland and the advancement of national traffic infrastructure, including my role as an economic counsellor at the Korean Embassy in Qatar. Throughout my career, I witnessed first-hand how international exchange and cooperation shape and bolster a country’s path towards economic growth and structural transformation. It is from this standpoint that I firmly believe in the power of effective international cooperation to foster mutual development, a philosophy I am determined to embody. How would you describe the current relationship between Bahrain and Korea, and what are your priorities in enhancing this relationship? Relations across many fields are as robust as ever. The visit of a Bahraini trade delegation in May, the signing of the bilateral Air Services Agreement, ongoing major cooperation projects such as SEHATI and Sijilat and close collaboration in cultural affairs all demonstrate the strong bilateral partnership the two friendly countries currently enjoy. As ambassador, I’m always devoted to further promoting bilateral cooperation across all sectors. I would like to facilitate deeper partnership in the fields of new and renewable energy, ICT, healthcare, education, youth empowerment and more. I believe the collaboration in these areas will lead to achieving a great synergy, widely benefiting the people of the two countries. Since the two governments are committed to investing in addressing the climate change and numerous Korean companies have a competitive edge in the world market, it would be timely and mutually beneficial to look into opportunities in the renewable energy sector. Can you discuss your country’s economic interests and trade relations with Bahrain, and the potential for future collaborations? The bilateral trade relations have been steady and increasing. It increased from about USD800 million in 2019 to surpass USD1 billion in 2022. Even with the dire effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Korea-Bahrain trade volume was rather stabilised, demonstrating mutual interests and trust, which, in turn, is an indication of potential for further growth. I believe that new and renewable energy including solar energy and hydrogen, ICT and healthcare are some of the sectors with potential. How would you address any cultural differences that may arise between Korean and Bahraini
Bahrainthismonth.com
officials and residents? I have noticed that there are more similarities than differences between Korea and Bahrain. I believe that our welcoming culture, respect towards the elderly and high value on family are important traits we both share. While there are aspects of Islamic religion and Arabic culture that I am not familiar with, the way I see it is that every society, or even different regions within a single state, will have its own unique cultural aspects. In this regard, I try to be as open-minded as possible and acknowledge our similarities and differences as they are, taking this opportunity to broaden the cultural diversity of both our societies. Can you provide an example of a successful initiative or project that Korea has implemented in Bahrain? Since the 1970s, the two have undertaken a remarkable journey together. Korea started with one construction project in the Kingdom; Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard in 1975. This Korean success story spread out to other countries in the region and led to the ‘Construction Boom’ in the Middle East, which contributed to making Korea one of the world’s largest economies today. Can you discuss your role in promoting Korean culture and language in Bahrain, and the cultural exchange initiatives that are currently in place? In terms of cultural exchange, the embassy has been hosting many cultural events, the most representative being our annual Korean movie festival, annual performing arts events, culinary events and Taekwondo competition. As the Korean Ambassador, I have placed great emphasis, especially on education exchange, because I believe that investing in the young generation of Bahrain will lead to the accumulation of valuable human capital that will help to strengthen our bilateral ties. On that note, we have been reinforcing the Korean language education in the Kingdom through our language education body, the Manama King Sejong Institute. The embassy also annually grants up to three students the Korean government scholarship, enabling them to pursue postgraduate studies at esteemed universities in Korea. How would you handle any political challenges or disputes that may arise between Korea and Bahrain, while maintaining a positive diplomatic relationship? Bahrain is one of the closest friends of Korea. We are blessed as the two countries have common values and shared goals such as making a greater contribution to the international community. Since we share these attributes as fundamental principles of bilateral relationship, the two friendly countries did not have to go through political challenges. If disputes arise in the future, I am sure the two countries will be able to wisely address the
issue at hand, with the help of those shared values and goals. What are your priorities in assisting Korean businesses that operate in or are interested in expanding to Bahrain? In my role, not only am I a salesman of Korea to Bahrainis but also I am a promoter of Bahrain to Koreans. I am committed to developing more bilateral trade and investment opportunities, which will ultimately expand the presence of Korean companies in Bahrain. With those goals in mind, I work closely with Bahraini economic authorities such as MOIC, EDB, Bahrain Chamber and Bahrain-Korea Friendship Society, jointly seeking ways to better promote Bahrain. I also host regular meetings with Korean companies to listen to their difficulties in operating business and discuss ways to solve them. How do you stay updated on the latest political and economic developments in Bahrain, and how do you integrate this knowledge into your diplomatic strategies? My hobby is studying! Reading as much material as possible enables me to keep up with latest developments. Following up closely with updates helps me to better identify the political and economic priorities in Bahrain. I try to connect these priorities to what Korea and Bahrain can work on together and how to materialise such cooperation. In your opinion, what is the most significant agenda facing Korea-Bahrain relations currently? The most significant is the establishment of Bahrain’s diplomatic mission to Korea. I’m delighted to have the Royal Decision in June this year to set up the Kingdom’s Embassy in Korea, and I will continue to provide necessary support. Is there anything you’d like to add? I am grateful for the exceptional hospitality extended to me by the people of Bahrain. From the moment I arrived, I felt an immediate sense of belonging, as if I was already a valued member of the community. This enlightening experience ignited a curiosity within me, compelling me to delve deeper into the society and people here, ultimately sparking a newfound passion for learning Arabic. Every morning, I now dedicate myself to studying Arabic, eagerly immersing myself in its intricacies and beauties. My ultimate goal is to be able to converse fluently with Bahrainis in their native language. Until then, I will continue to push myself to improve my Arabic skills and deepen my understanding of the vibrant Arabic culture along the way.

STRENGTHENING TIES December is a highly significant month for Thailand and its nationals. The South East Asian country will celebrate its National Day, commemorate the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and mark Thai Father’s Day. interview Your Excellency, thank you for speaking to us! What are your top priorities as the Thai Ambassador? I think first and foremost is to maintain the very strong friendship between the two countries. I have witnessed first-hand that the Thai community in Bahrain is extremely happy to be here. My top priority, as part of this friendship, is that we have to advance our economic relationship and so the economic agenda is a very important part of my work here, chiefly supporting Thai businesses and bringing in new types of industry.
What is the current state of relations between Thailand and Bahrain? What are some of the key areas of cooperation between the two countries? Our friendship is close and enduring. There are constant high level exchanges of visits as well as a substantial and growing economic relationship : the Thai Mart in Muharraq being a notable Thai presence in Bahrain. The connectivity is also excellent, thanks to Gulf Air. We are looking to enhance economic cooperation, trade facilitation, as well as cooperation on food security, health and well being, and education, among others.
What are some of the challenges facing the Thai-Bahraini relationship, and how do you plan to address them? There are very few challenges, which is a good thing. What I would say is that due to time constraints and the amount of activities we take part in from both sides, sometimes arranging meetings can take some time but this is such a minor issue. On a more general level, our greatest challenge is from the travel side and disseminating information and raising awareness for engagement in terms of both tourism and business between the two countries. I believe that people could maximise their opportunities for both a little better. For example, Thailand has so many more places to go than say Phuket, Pattaya or Bangkok.
What are your thoughts on the recent increase in trade and investment between Thailand and Bahrain? What areas of cooperation do you see growing in the future? The upturn in trade has been excellent, in particular in areas such as motoring, marine engineering and electronics. What I’d like to see more of is more Thai daily-use products and construction materials as I believe we can boost that industry with products available from Thailand. I think the main area of growth will be food security and agriculture, as
Bahrainthismonth.com
Bahrain is rapidly advancing in this regard.
What can the Thai government do to support Thai businesses and entrepreneurs who are interested in expanding into the Bahraini market, and how can the Bahraini government create a welcoming environment? The new Thai government has a strong focus on helping Thai businesses to go abroad. For example, just this month, with the support of the Thai Trade Centre in Dubai, Thai cosmetics and perfume brands were present at Scent Arabia Exhibition for the first time with more active promotion from the Thai side.
What is your message for the Thai community in Bahrain? Thank you for proudly representing Thailand in Bahrain, bringing our unique culture, traditions, and especially food. I wish everyone continued happiness, success, and good health. Scan to watch the full interview
Further down the road there is strong potential for hastening trade agreements between the two countries. Already there is progress ON ASEAN - GCC free trade agreement, and I hope this can be concluded soon.
What are your thoughts on the role of tourism in strengthening Thai-Bahrain relations? It’s hugely important. More than 10,000 Bahrainis visit Thailand every year, which is a significant number compared to the population here. Of course, the cuisine is hugely popular in Bahrain too with a number of popular outlets serving Thai food. Furthermore, I think with more international events being held in Bahrain such as the Formula One, concerts, and more, it’s becoming an important destination for Thais.
What are your thoughts on the people-topeople relations between Thailand and Bahrain? What do you think can be done to further strengthen these relations? I have to say that the friendship between the two peoples is already really close and I think that there are so many things to exchange in terms of culture as on both, the Thai and Bahraini side, it is so rich and historic. I think that the youth of today, in particular, are really connected. They are exchanging ideas, their artistic experiences, and having joint activities will certainly enhance their life experiences and opportunities for them. One of the things that we have explored with inspiration from the Bahraini government is to find internship programmes from our big companies in Thailand. This will allow short-term and medium-term internships in Thailand and hopefully that could be a part of our portfolio for promoting the new generation of Thais and Bahrainis to get to know each other better.

A Journey Through Pizza’s Rich History
T
he Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation annually celebrates the Week of Italian Cuisine in the World with this year’s edition being the eighth, themed ‘Dining with Italian Cuisine: Well-being with Taste’. Italian cuisine extends beyond its delectable flavours, emphasising the benefits of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins for overall well-being. Italian cuisine is a candidate for UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This recognition would not only honour the rich heritage of Italian cuisine but also the Italian culinary lifestyle, which is loved and imitated all over the planet. Pizza, that iconic Italian dish adored worldwide, holds a rich and diverse history that spans centuries. Originating in Naples, the heartland of Italian cuisine, pizza, particularly the revered Pizza Margherita, embodies the essence of traditional Italian flavours. Crafted with precision, it comprises naturally fermented dough, San Marzano tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil, all baked to perfection in a wood-burning dome-shaped oven. This culinary masterpiece

earned its Specialità Tradizionale Garantita (STG) designation (reserved for agri-food products untethered to a specific territory but characterised by traditional production methods) in 2010 and achieved UNESCO’s prestigious status as ‘intangible cultural heritage’ in 2017. To safeguard this cultural treasure, the Verace Pizza Napoletana (VPN) or True Neapolitan Pizza Association was founded in 1984. But the roots of pizza delve deeper into history, tracing back to ancient Etruscans in the 8th Century BC. These skilled bakers prepared round flatbreads called ‘panus focus,’ a precursor to the modern term ‘focaccia.’ In the 19th century, the word ‘pizza’ was broad, describing various round-shaped breads and desserts. It wasn’t until the late 1800s that the famous Pizza Margherita emerged, an homage of pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito to Queen Margherita of Savoy and her husband, King Umberto I. Its ingredients, representing the Italian flag’s colours — red (tomatoes), white (mozzarella), and green (basil) — transformed pizza into a symbol of national pride.
Pizza is a balanced and healthy meal, depending on the quality of ingredients. The Margherita pizza offers a complete meal with the right calories, low unsaturated fat, complex carbohydrates, calcium, proteins, and vitamins. Ingredients like Italian extra virgin olive oil, Bufala mozzarella, and tomatoes contribute to its nutritional value. The pizza’s complex carbohydrate-based dough delivers slow-release energy, helping manage hunger and preventing blood sugar fluctuations. This promotes a sense of satisfaction and reduces the temptation for unhealthy snacks. Additionally, Bufala mozzarella, a vital pizza ingredient, is a top-quality Italian cheese rich in milk proteins, calcium, and vitamin D, while tomatoes provide vitamin C and antioxidants. The careful selection of highquality ingredients is crucial for a healthy and balanced dish. Finally, pizza prepared with natural yeast, long fermentation, and short baking time in a wood-fired oven is not only delicious but also easily digestible, suitable for all ages. We hope you enjoy this culinary gem just as much as we do!

Brain Power! interview
D
r. Choudhary has spent a lifetime carefully curating occasions for people of all ages to enjoy. After all, he was just 16 years old when he was performing as a clown and juggler in Dubai and saw a gap in the market to pursue. What was a hobby soon became a profession, which then grew into a fully-fledged career in event management.
After finding great success in Dubai, facilitating concerts with renowned artists including DJ Tiesto, Shaggy, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Shah Rukh Khan and more, Dr. Choudhary has set his sights firmly on Bahrain. “It’s a hub, something like Ibiza,” he believes. “I feel more comfortable doing events here than anywhere else in the Gulf. I find there is a lot of genuine support from the government and a lot of people here elevate events to a different level and know how to enjoy themselves. “That is ultimately what events management is all about: whatever the event is, as long as people are entertained then that’s all that matters.”

Bahrain’s burgeoning happenings scene continues to provide unique and creative experiences. This month, Kristian Harrison sat down with esteemed events director, Dr. Nadeem Choudhary, to discuss his plans for the Kingdom and his Big Brain concept.
Entertainment is the crux of Dr. Choudhary’s Big Brain concept, which aims to promote local and international artists and push the envelope to offer different experiences. “As you see by the name itself, it’s a big brain and this involves crazy ideas which are totally out of the box,” he explains. “As an example, in 2015 I organised a successful Guinness World Record attempt in Dubai, which involved setting the world record for longest DJ relay – in which each subsequent DJ takes over the decks while maintaining the beat – with 151 participants. I am planning something similar in Bahrain and to set more records while doing something different from other event management companies here.” Dr. Choudhary believes that event managers need to develop more creative experiences going forward to deal with the shifting expectations of the population. “Put simply, we have to come up with creative things and lean towards educating people rather than just putting on big parties,” he believes. “Simple
concepts like sports events, quizzes and other games can be hugely successful if done right. I also believe in education so I am looking at ways to have respected educators deliver lectures and talks at some events. “Ultimately, however, I think one of the biggest problems I see in the industry, and this is especially true of Bahrain, is when there are five or more big events, such as concerts, organised on the same day. In this situation, everyone loses. Even if my event is more popular than others, I don’t support competitors losing because ultimately the market becomes less healthy if they underperform and the average quality of performers dips. We need everyone to have a connected network and co-ordinate. This way, not only do we all make money, but the people of Bahrain benefit too. “Ultimately, my advice is to follow Big Brain and trust Big Brain. We are here to give you some big surprises in the very near future!”

Fostering a Premium Experience
For decades, Alosra Supermarket has been synonymous with excellence in the realm of premium grocery shopping in Bahrain. Propelling the brand is Alosra’s Director, Ayachi Jomaa, who enlightens Bahrain This Month on the key factors that have led to the supermarket chain’s success.
A
losra’s Director, Ayachi Jomaa, has a wealth of experience in the retail field having grown from a supervisory position on the shop floor to Regional Manager of a well-established chain in the GCC. “I have always been dedicated to serving in supermarkets, and through my involvement across several key departments in retail, I have acquired an array of skillsets,” says Mr. Jomaa. Given the competitive nature of the market, connecting with the consumer is essential – something that Alosra has perfected over the years. “Alosra is unique in its approach, since we value our customers above everything. By actively engaging with customer feedback, fostering community ties, and maintaining a visually appealing store environment, we aim to provide a unique and enjoyable shopping experience that sets us apart in the premium supermarket sector,” he explains. “To ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty, we prioritise high quality products, invest in customer service training, focus on our loyalty programme Alosra Circle, and stay abreast of technological innovations,” he adds.

In the event of a customer complaint, Mr. Jomaa states that his approach is clear. “Always listen and allow the customer to express their opinion. I find it always best to see the shopping experience from a customer’s perspective. Our dedicated staff are trained and work hard to cater to our diverse customers’ needs. We also do regular customer satisfaction surveys, to improve ourselves and build on our valued shoppers’ feedback,” he says. Keeping up with the latest market trends, the chain stays connected with regional and global events in the retail sector while observing direct and indirect competitors and exploring their successful endeavours. With sustainability at the forefront of corporate responsibility in recent years, Alosra Supermarket has incorporated several practices to minimise waste. “To manage all parts of inventory management, we regularly conduct comprehensive audits and analysis to help us identify slow-moving items and prevent overstocking and wastage. In
addition, we strive to have alternative waste strategies like recycling our packaging and plastic waste,” he states. “In my previous experience we learned always to do more with less, nonetheless with Alosra it is a different model,” he says on cost-effective strategies. “At Alosra, we prioritise on providing a unique and exceptional shopping experience that requires more focus on many levels; human and assets. Human meaning quality trained experience employees in their field. When it comes to assets, for sure we should have the latest and most efficient technology and information systems and equipment.” Finally, with several branches spread across the island, Alosra Supermarket’s team has been a crucial element in its success. Mr. Jomaa shares his approach to motivating and leading a large team of employees in a supermarket setting: “To foster an environment for employees to have an engaged and involved perspective of their operations, and by acknowledging and rewarding outstanding performance through recognition programs and incentives to inspire a culture of excellence.”

Talking Time
The Swiss watchmaking brand Hublot has been synonymous with innovation since 1980. During the dazzling Jewellery Arabia 2023 exhibition, Kristian Harrison sat down for a chat with Hublot’s Regional Director of Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle East and Africa, David Tedeschi. He shared his insights on why the brand’s collections are coveted around the world, its presence in the Middle East and the company’s brand ambassadors.
H
ublot needs no introduction to discerning watch-wearers around the world. This has been the result of the brand’s ground-breaking craftsmanship, attention to detail and its watches’ carefullyengineered movements. Once again, the brand’s eye-catching exhibit caught the watchful gaze of many a visitor at Jewellery Arabia, particularly the centrepiece of the display, the new fully-transparent Square Bang Unico Sapphire 42mm. “Commercially wise, Jewellery Arabia is a big event for us as the second biggest trade exhibition in the region,” says Mr. Tedeschi. “Furthermore, Hublot is proud to be represented here since we have such a strong bond with our oldest partner in the region, Bahrain Jewellery Centre, who we first worked with in 1980. We have always been in their multi-brand store in Moda Mall and have opened our own boutique there. One of Hublot’s major distinctions in Bahrain is that sales are split almost 50-50 between males and females, compared to just 35-40 percent to women in the GCC and even smaller in Europe and other parts of Asia.
“At the end of the day, I don’t believe a smartwatch is a watch,” he says. “It’s more of a gadget. I actually wear an Apple Watch alongside my Hublot watch and I don’t use it to read time but rather to access functions on my wrist without needing my phone. For us it doesn’t change anything; we have both in our collection with normal mechanical watches and also some smartwatches, the first of which we launched in 2018 as the Referee Watch as we were the official timekeeper for the FIFA World Cup in Russia. “I believe we still appeal strongly to younger people too as our approach is completely different. We’re not a conservative brand… we understand tradition but we are also young compared to many of our peers and that constant looking to the future helps us appeal to younger people.”
sportspeople. Ambassadors include French football star Kylian Mbappé and Serbian tennis superstar Novak Djokovic. “Hublot has always been involved in sport,” Mr. Tedeschi concludes. “We were the first watch brand that entered into football, for example, and these ambassadors help us to communicate our image to those who don’t know us. Younger people, even those under 18 years old will become our client in five, 10 or 15 years; it’s the right time to connect with them about Hublot’s presence. So really, it’s about connecting with the younger generation – future Hublot wearers.”
Another area which enables Hublot to generate worldwide appeal is with its numerous partnerships with prominent celebrities and
“Bahrain is incredible in this regard,” he explains. “Every watch brand tries to attract the interest of women as watches tend to be a little bit of a man’s world. To see such equal figures really means that women appreciate the brand a lot in the region and shows that our strategy to run dedicated campaigns for women on a local and international level are succeeding.” Another global trend is the increasing popularity of smartwatches and digital wristwear. When asked about the possible impact this may have on classical watchmakers like Hublot and how it retains interest amongst the younger generation, Mr. Tedeschi was remarkably unperturbed.

ALL THINGS EXQUISITE Founded in Valenza in 1924, the Damiani Group is a luxury Italian jewellery brand known worldwide for its fine creations. In November 2023, the company exhibited at the prestigious Jewellery Arabia
Alongside his siblings Giorgio and Silvia, Guido Damiani has overseen incredible success in recent years as Italy’s only familyowned jewellery company continues to reach new heights whilst furthering the legacy that their grandfather, Enrico, started almost a century ago. Now, the Damiani Group is looking to add to its portfolio of more than 60 boutiques worldwide by moving into Bahrain and the Kingdom’s residents who visited Jewellery Arabia got a closer look at some of the exquisite pieces which will be available at Bahrain Jewellery Centre who is their local partner in the Kingdom. “This is one of the most important jewellery events worldwide,” Guide said. “We came not only for the exhibition itself, but also because we are under a plan of expansion in all the countries of the Gulf area so this is the perfect place to promote our brand. More specifically, in Bahrain we are looking to open a couple of stores, likely in Moda Mall and Marassi Mall, within the next six months. This follows the opening of our boutique in Dubai Mall and a second location there which we will reveal soon. Furthermore, we have already signed a lease contract for Kuwait, Doha and Riyadh.”

passed down through the generations and to leave to the one following us.” 2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of Damiani’s founding, and Guido revealed that some big surprises are on the way next year with a special collection, unique pieces and an exhibition travelling the world. There will also be more collaborations with celebrities, who unlike with other brands, are customers who are friends or originally sought the company out to purchase from
their collections. “Our celebrity collaborations are not people we just pay to wear our stuff,” Guido explains. “They have to care about the brand. For example, many years ago, we launched a collection with Brad Pitt. However, before this he was a customer who walked into our store. “Still to this day, Sophia Loren will call my brother Giorgio and send him a picture of her clothes and ask him to suggest a piece which will match the outfit! So we truly choose who we work with very carefully and make sure they love our brand as much as we love working with them.”
The jewellery business has been in Guido’s blood almost since birth, and it was inevitable that one day he would lead the company into the future. Growing up in Valenza, his family apartment was in the same building as the offices and factory of Damiani, with even holidays spent buying gems. As he puts it: “I literally grew up in the middle of gold and diamonds.” These days, he runs the company largely from his adopted home of Dubai. “As the President, from one point of view I do nothing and from the other, I do everything,” he explains. “I decide and implement the strategy and direct my managers, who refer to me with questions if they need to. Aside from that, I’m always in meetings whether online or personally and of course, I travel back to Europe frequently too.” The jewellery industry is a competitive one, but the fact that it is still family-owned makes Damiani rise above its rivals, according to Guido. “The fact that we are the third generation of the family to run the company means that the consumer can feel the difference,” he believes. “It’s not only a business or a question of money, but it’s a statement of passion and a dream to realise something

NEW YEAR NEW OPPORTUNITIES
A New Year brings with it opportunities for a reset, growth and learning. Business expert, Pria Masson, delves into the key trends she expects to see leading the business industry in 2024.
I
was binge watching Downton Abbey a few days ago and Mrs. Crawley was “amused” at how each year, we toast at midnight no matter what is coming our way. To which, Old Lady Grantham says: “What choice do we have?” Indeed, looking forward is the only reasonable thing to do in December. Looking back may teach us, but looking ahead tells us where to go despite the lessons. So, this month, based on what I am currently reading, I talk about the four key trends that I think the world of business will experience in 2024.
finding a problem with a viable solution is less predictable than easing a process. This is where I think there will be increasing participation and innovation. For example, we needed digital payments, so payment platforms emerged. These need systems and processes in addition to infrastructure and so Payments-as-a-Service (PaaS) have emerged. Look at any industry, ordering food, delivering goods, making bookings, finding information – so many businesses are subsets of larger processes – a group that will inevitably grow.
Operational ‘steps’ may turn into robust businesses.
Tech is a part of business, but will be driven by experience.
Find a problem, ease a process, or create a new product. These are the basic reasons to start a business. In a very connected world,
While listening to a podcast, the person speaking said he finds entrepreneurs who
56
December 2023
are in the age group of 38 to 50 the most interesting. His rationale fascinated me. He said that technology is an enabler, but it is experience that teaches us what the problems or ‘itches’ are to which we need a solution. That, to my mind, is the future. Where experience will drive technology offshoots of traditional ‘brick and mortar’ businesses. Take the latest phrase that is seen everywhere – generative AI. It is very simply, the ability of a machine to learn and create. However, the experience on what to create, what sort of experience needs it and what to do with all that data, those are likely to be the business ideas of the future.
Bahrainthismonth.com
commerce Climate and sustainability will become must-haves. Global warming is real. Finding ways to slow it down is very real and it is also all pervasive. The problem is so large and the micro problems almost infinite. It appears climate technology, climate systems and anything
related to tracking, controlling, measuring or fixing the issues, would be a business idea ready to grow. Sustainability is the cousin of climate in that it is anything that has a lower carbon footprint compared to an alternate system. ‘Climate-as-a-Service’ could just be the phrase of 2024.
Soft skills and creativity will turn more lucrative. Fundamental economics says that a scarce good or service will command a higher price. With technology easing out so many processes
and systems, the biggest scarcity is likely to be the ability to stand out. Creativity, how we make people feel and how we understand human beings could be the game changing theme. Ideas like emotional intelligence, communication, solving problems with others and incorporating these into the business experience, these will set companies and people apart. So much is going on around us that it feels like nothing can be controlled. You can, however, control your readiness for the future. So, upskill, re-skill or just simply learn a whole new skill to fill the gaps that will inevitably be created with rapid changes in technology and business. To quote (almost) one of my favorite books: “Your job is not to think of the wall to be built, yours is to think of the next brick to be added.” The future is uncertain, but read between the lines, assess what could be needed, then pick up your brick and start cementing it in.

BAHRAIN-ITALY TRADE HIGHLIGHTED AT FORUM
A business forum entitled ‘Prospects of Cooperation for Sustainable Development between Italy and Bahrain: Introduction of the Italy-Bahrain Business Council’s Activities’ was recently held under the patronage of Minister of Industry and Commerce, HE Abdulla bin Adel Fakhro. The conference was hosted in collaboration with the Italy-Bahrain Business Council (IBBC), the Embassy of Italy in Bahrain, the Embassy of Bahrain in Italy, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA), and the Bahrain Economic Development Board (Bahrain EDB). The forum featured presentations with a focus on high-impact trade and economic bilateral opportunities between Italy and Bahrain, as well as potential areas of cooperation in the field of sustainable development.
Bahrain and Italy share a robust history of economic and trade ties since several agreements, across a range of sectors, have been signed that include the protection of investments and the mutual exemption of taxes on sea transport. Bilateral trade, in 2020, amounted to USD634 million, while two years later in 2022 the total volume almost doubled, reaching USD954.8 million. Furthermore, over the past three years, the ITA’s Desk in Manama has assisted over 250 Italian companies and made it possible for over 100 Bahraini delegates to attend exhibitions and fairs in Italy. In the Bahraini import landscape, Italy ranks first for mechanical components, appreciated for its high-level technology and fashion — which imports have shown an increase of
about 49 percent between 2021 and 2022 — and food imports doubled between 2020 and 2022, reaching an overall amount of about USD40 million. The main products exported from Italy have been industrial machinery, semi-finished products, furniture, and vehicles. From the Bahraini side, aluminium and chemicals have been the most exported categories to Italy. The Bahraini exports to Italy have increased overall by about 141,6 percent on a yearly basis. Approximately 130 Italian individuals play significant roles within the corporate landscape of Bahrain, either as members of the board of directors or as enterprise owners with the largest concentration of firms in the manufacturing sector.

CBB ISSUES NEW ESG REPORTING FRAMEWORK The Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) has released the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements module on November 5, representing a transformative step towards a more sustainable financial market. The module draws on global standards and frameworks to ensure effective ESG integration. It incorporates findings from the ESG Reporting Survey conducted by the CBB in 2022, which involved various entities such as listed companies, insurance firms, banks, and investment firms. The module is directed at all listed companies, banks, financing companies, insurance firms, and category 1 and 2 investment firms, providing them with guidelines on the reporting requirements for the environmental,
social, and corporate governance factors. “In today’s business landscape, financial metrics are no longer the sole criteria for evaluating companies. Shareholders and investors now expect companies to demonstrate greater transparency regarding their impact ESG practices,” says CBB Executive Director of Financial Institutions Supervision, Abeer Al Saad. “All listed companies, banks, financing companies, insurance firms, and category 1 and 2 investment firms shall start reporting these requirements from the financial year 2024,” she adds. The CBB emphasises the importance of addressing ESG-related risks that align with Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A Festival of Flavour Indian festivals are known for their vibrant atmosphere and contagious sense of joy. Throughout December, Ramee Grand Hotel & Spa will be emulating this spirit through the Chandini Chowk Festival at its Indian restaurant Tanatan. Edwin D’Souza checks out this flavourful festival.
I
ndian cuisine is known across the world for its rich and diverse flavours, and that’s what Tanatan’s Chandini Chowk Festival is really all about. The restaurant has set up beautiful stalls which pay homage to the renowned Delhi 6, which is famous for being the oldest and most significant market for wholesale products in India, and complemented the ambience with an experience that certainly lived up to its reputation. Our Chandini Chowk experience began with an exciting variety of traditional Indian starters, better known to Indians as chaat. The Pani Puri, Dhai Puri, Bhel Puri, Papdi Chaat, Raj Kachori and Sev Puri were all presented like colourful, edible works of art. Each had its own unique flavours and textures, from the crispy base of the Pani Puri to the creamy tang of the Dhai Puri. The Bhel Puri brought together a mixture of crispy puffed rice, tangy tamarind chutney, and crunchy sev, while the Raj Kachori wowed with its combination of crispiness, sweetness and spiciness. The audible crunch and myriad flavours made their chaat addictive. For the main course, we were served the Kashmiri Pulao, Mutton Burra Kebab, Butter Chicken and Radda Chicken. There’s nothing quite like delicious, hot naan, so these were paired with butter naan, kheema naan and garlic naan. The flavours were nothing short of amazing. The Mutton Burra Kebab consisted of well-marinated and perfectly cooked lamb chops flavoured with India’s finest spices, while the Butter Chicken had a velvety and creamy tomato gravy that was simply delicious. The naan’s
Bahrainthismonth.com
warm and fluffy texture, were a perfect accompaniment to the bold flavours of the curries. The Kashmiri Pulao, a rice dish laden with nuts, dried fruits, saffron and fresh fruits was a blissful experience to dive into. The Radda Chicken was a perfect demonstration of how Indian cuisine can take a simple ingredient and turn it into something incredibly flavourful. The rich gravy consists of lentils and soft and tender boneless chicken — a unique curry to add to the experience. To cap off this phenomenal meal, we were served with Falooda and Gulab Jamun for dessert. The Falooda was light and refreshing, with a sweet, floral taste that contrasted perfectly with the richness of its toppings. The Gulab Jamun, which we all are fans of, is a popular Indian dessert made from sweetened milk and dough. These were warm and satiating, and topped with pistachios that added to the flavour. The light and sweet desserts made for a perfect ending to our trip to Chandini Chowk. Overall, the festival hosted by the Tanatan restaurant exceeded our expectations. From the creative and delicious starters to the perfectly seasoned main course to the unforgettable dessert, every dish was a true testament to the flavours and diversity of Indian cuisine. Whether you are an experienced Indian cuisine lover or a beginner, Tanatan is definitely worth Scan to a visit. watch the video

EXHILARATING ENDURANCE
motoring
The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 8 Hours of Bahrain thrilled thousands of fans both on and off the track at Bahrain International Circuit, with a feast of entertainment on offer. Kristian Harrison witnessed the adrenaline-fuelled action on track as the chequered flag dropped on another nail-biting season of one of motorsports’ most important series.
T
oyota Gazoo Racing capped an outstanding 2023 season with a sensational onetwo in Sakhir. Toyota’s #8 crew of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa not only shone brightest under lights in their GR010 Hybrid to take the impressive victory, but also secured this year’s FIA Hypercar World Endurance Drivers Championship title, adding to their FIA Hypercar World Endurance Manufacturers’ Championship to complete a fantastic double. Toyota teammates Kamui Kobayashi, Mike Conway and Jose Maria Lopez in their #7 Hybrid finished as runners-up, overcoming an opening-lap incident that saw them spin off the track at the very first corner. They recovered magnificently to join Buemi, Hartley and Hirakawa on the podium, but lost out on the Hypercar drivers’ title race. The result marked the sixth win in seven WEC races in 2023 for Toyota Gazoo Racing. It was the second triumph for the Buemi, Hartley, Hirakawa triumvirate, having also taken first place in Portugal. Ferrari AF Corse’s #50 crew of Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen took the final podium step amongst the WEC’s Hypercars in third.

Winning the Le Mans Prototype 2 (LMP2) category was Team WRT’s #41 trio of Rui Andrade, Robert Kubica and Louis Deletraz. It was the final race in the WEC for the LMP2s, which has been a mainstay in the series since its inception. WRT’s triumph secured them this season’s FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Teams, as well as the FIA Endurance Trophy for LMP2 Drivers for Andrade, Kubica and Deletraz. The #85 all-female squad Iron Dames completed the roster of race winners in Bahrain, taking the triumph in the Le Mans Grand Touring Endurance Am (LMGTE Am) class. Sarah Bovy started things off for their squad before handing over the driving duties to teammates Rahel Frey and Michelle Gatting, who took them home to the finish. Right after lights-out, the first-corner incident that saw the #2 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V-Series.R Hybrid clip the title-chasing #7 Hybrid of Toyota caused it to lose its position amongst the leaders. Buemi was in the car for the pole-sitters in Toyota’s #8 GR010 Hybrid, and after getting away at the rip-roaring rolling start was able to build a good lead for his crew over the opening two hours. They gradually added to their
advantage throughout the course of the race, and eventually took the chequered flag, waved by Richard Mille, at the end of the eight hours with 249 laps completed. They were classified a lap ahead of their #7 teammates, while Ferrari’s #50 crew were more than a minute-and-a-half behind.

VERSTAPPEN CELEBRATES 18TH WIN OF THE SEASON Red Bull’s Max Verstappen sang «Viva Las Vegas» after racing to a recordextending 18th victory of the season and joining Sebastian Vettel in third place on Formula One’s all-time winners’ list. The triumph was the 53rd of the triple champion’s career, and sixth in a row, and came after a five-second penalty for forcing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc off track at the start and then a collision with Mercedes’ George Russell. According to Reuters, Leclerc finished second after starting on pole position, losing and regaining the lead and then losing it again before passing Sergio Perez on the final lap to deny Red Bull a seventh one-two of the season. The win was Red Bull’s 20th in 21 races, another record for a single season, and delivered the racing that had risked being swamped in a wave of hype as Vegas hosted a grand prix for the first time since the 1980s. RedBull also completed a sweep of three US wins in 2023 for their 26-year-old Dutch driver, who was also dominant in Miami and Austin.

It can recognise up to six drivers’ faces and restore their preferences from a database of over 250 settings. With a safety-focused design, the Advanced Driver Distraction Warning System and advanced crash safety features make the CX-90 a safe drive.
«It was a tough one,» said Verstappen, whose race suit paid homage to the signature jumpsuit of the late «King of Rock and Roll», Elvis Presley. Red Bull played the timeless Elvis song over the team radio, after pop star Justin Bieber waved the chequered flag, and Verstappen showed he is a far better driver than singer by joining in.
HYUNDAI MOTOR BREAKS GROUND ON USD1.5 BILLION EV PLANT Hyundai Motor Co. broke ground on Monday on a KRW2 trillion (USD1.52 billion) plant dedicated to making electric vehicles (EVs) in South Korea, as the automaker accelerates a shift away from petrol-powered cars. Construction of the factory, which is the automaker’s first new factory in South Korea in 29 years, is expected to end in 2025. According to Reuters, the Ulsan complex is Hyundai’s biggest manufacturing site, with its own port and an annual production capacity of 1.4 million vehicles, including exports of 1.1 million units. The factory in Ulsan, in the southeast, will have an annual capacity of 200,000 units and the company said its first model will be an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) from its luxury brand Genesis. Hyundai Motor Group, which encompasses Hyundai Motor, Kia and Genesis brands, said in April it plans to launch 31 EV models by 2030.

THE POWER OF THE PRANCING HORSE
It is the lifelong dream of many motoring enthusiasts to get behind the wheel of a Ferrari and feel the power of the prancing horse. Last month, Kristian Harrison had the incredible opportunity to drive not one, but two, of the Maranello marque’s marvels in Dubai. He shares his thoughts on his experience with the 296 GTS and GTB.
A
with my new acquaintance, test out its extensive features and most importantly, have fun.
None of these is the correct answer of course. For it is ‘Sitting behind the wheel of the Ferrari 296’.
Fun is certainly what I had! However, my first emotion was a concoction of nervousness and excitement as I arrived at the Al Tayer Motors Ferrari showroom in Dubai. After a tour of the facilities, I was handed the keys to the gorgeous GTS, with its silver body accentuated with blue accents, and told to let loose on the streets of Dubai. Not being overly familiar with the area, it truly was an adventure to learn and explore.
sk someone what their definition of heaven on Earth is, and you’ll get a variety of answers. Sipping cocktails on a golden beach? Enjoying a five-course meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant? Spending quality time with the family?
Luckily enough, this was not my first experience with these cars – the GTS being the folding convertible and the GTB being a hardtop coupe – having taken them for a couple of laps around the Bahrain International Circuit recently. However, while that was an exercise in speed, braking and exhilaration, this was my first opportunity to spend some real quality time

The best feeling of any drive of a car like this is that initial ignition and the accompanying roar, this time to bring the 819 BHP hybrid powertrain to purring life. One thing is for sure,
Ferrari hasn’t forgotten how to make absolutely stunning sports cars that have you thinking you must be in automotive nirvana. Knowing I would have the GTB to enjoy the following day, I took the earliest opportunity to put the roof of the GTS down and enjoy the wind in my hair. Pulling the paddle shifters to set myself into forward motion, I got to confirm first-hand that the 296 can do 0-100kmph in 2.8s (it actually felt faster) pulling 740Nm of torque. I did not get as far as testing out the listed top speed of 330kmph (promise!) but as the car accelerated, the smoothness of the transmission up through the gears was incredible. However, even more impressive was the car under braking. I put it through a hard stop
Bahrainthismonth.com
motoring test and the car geared down so smoothly and remained so incredibly stable that I would be confident of taking it out on track days without any hesitation. The following day brought the dark blue GTB, with a few tangible differences. A little lighter without the roof mechanism, the steering was an edge tighter and more responsive, and the interior was slightly roomier. Visually, it’s a matter of preference, but I did prefer the GTB’s sharper aerodynamic contours without the need to accommodate the folding roof. However, I’m not sure if given the choice between the two that I would sacrifice the opportunity to cruise around without a roof on during a city drive. As much as I would have liked to spend the entire time with the car in ‘Sport’ or ‘Race’ mode,
Bidding Farewell
Bahrainthismonth.com
I did flick on the Hybrid switch and drove on battery power alone. When fully charged, you can drive for roughly 25km in deathly silence, which is impressive considering the compact space Ferrari had to pack this technology in alongside the luxurious cabin with its high-quality materials and bucket seats which provided enough room for six-foot plus adults like myself. Quite literally, my time with these two amazing automobiles went way too fast, yet provided me with one of the best experiences of my journalistic career. I’m already excited to see how the Italian icons continue to innovate in the future. Scan to watch the video

Taylor Swift
1989 (Taylor’s Version) While Taylor Swift transitioned cautiously from country to pop on 2012’s Red, she became the face of mainstream pop music with the monumental synth-driven hit parade of her next album, 1989. This version continues Swift’s series of re-recording her albums for purposes related to licensing rights, and more than any of the revised versions that preceded it, illuminates the moment when she became a timeless songwriter. Returning to this material exactly nine years later, one would expect songs played to death on the radio for nearly a decade to feel a little dated. Instead, the re-recorded versions (like all of Taylor’s Versions, aiming for faithful re-creation of the originals more than artistic updating) sound fresh and vital, perhaps even more powerful in light of Swift’s often-shifting artistic progress since.
The Rolling Stones
Blink-182
One More Time… Verdict:
An emotionally-charged return for the original lineup.
What’s the story?
One More Time... is the 9th studio album by American rock band Blink-182. The album marks the return of guitarist/ vocalist Tom DeLonge following his departure from the band in 2015. DeLonge was prompted to return to the band after bassist/vocalist Mark Hoppus received a cancer diagnosis in 2021. Following a meeting between DeLonge and his former bandmates, the trio overcame lingering disputes, which later led to DeLonge’s return. Lyrically, the album explores familiar territory like relationships and maturation, as well as lyrics inspired by the band’s own history and Hoppus’ battle with cancer.
Worth a listen?
Without DeLonge, it always felt like something was missing. That something was DeLonge’s goofy sincerity and hyperresonant croon, two key elements of the group’s classic sound, along with their crisp guitar, bass and drum riffs that are front and centre throughout all of One More Time.... Cuts like “Dance with Me,” “Bad News,” and “Fell in Love” are classic Blink, yet there are wounds here, and the band dig deep into them, working through the mess of bad breakup on “More Than You Know” and revealing the stark truth about taking someone’s presence in your life for granted on “You Don’t Know What You’ve Got,” the latter of which finds their voices intertwined in a throaty harmony. One More Time... plays like a love letter, both to fans who stuck with them and to each other – a letter that doesn’t so much ask for forgiveness as offer it willingly, passionately and without conditions.

Hackney Diamonds Hackney Diamonds is the Stones’ first collection of new songs in 18 years. Despite that, they wisely don’t attempt new tricks anywhere, save maybe “Whole Wide World,” whose bizarre neo-new wave vibe gets odder thanks to Mick Jagger singing in an exaggerated Cockney accent. While a good portion of the record is devoted to straight-ahead rock & roll, they also find space for ragged country (“Dreamy Skies”) and acoustic blues (“Rolling Stone Blues”), not to mention “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” a show-stopping ballad featuring Lady Gaga. At its heart, the record is nothing more than the Rolling Stones knocking out some good Rolling Stones songs, which seems like a minor miracle after such a long wait.
Duran Duran
Danse Macabre On the iconic group’s latest album, Duran Duran dedicate themselves to conjuring the ideal soundtrack to a Halloween party. The ‘party’ part of the equation is important. Danse Macabre may be filled with creepy sounds, but this isn’t a belated excursion into goth. It’s a collection of after-hours fun that flirts with high camp. Generally, Danse Macabre nimbly walks the line separating the spooky and the silly, opting for black-lit dance-pop instead of chilly atmosphere. This is a momentous occasion, and the charm lies in how Duran Duran seem unencumbered by expectations: they’re lying back and having a good time, resulting in a record that captures their silly and serious sides in equal measure.

Bahraini Women’s Day
Celebrating Bahraini Women
On the occasion of Bahraini Women’s Day, Woman This Month pauses to reflect on and thank the many inspirational women who have paved the way for the Kingdom’s young girls to feel part of a progressive society where their rights are respected, and their work admired and appreciated.
H
RH Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, is said to be one of the most important figures when it comes to the progress and development of Bahraini women, having established the Supreme Council for Women (SCW) and sits as its current President. Launched by HRH Princess Sabeeka in 2008, the first Bahraini Women’s Day celebrated 80 years since the start of formal education for women in the Kingdom. According to reports, women’s education started in Bahrain in 1928, making the Kingdom of Bahrain the first Gulf country to have female education. Marked on December 1 every year, the occasion celebrates Bahraini women and their consistent contributions to shaping the identity of a modern, forward-thinking society that seeks to preserve the principles of equality in the national development process. In a statement marking Bahraini Women’s Day, HM King Hamad commended the role played by the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), led by HRH Princess Sabeeka, in advancing women in the kingdom.

Bahraini Women’s Day
“Throughout its institutional work, the SCW has been able to demonstrate our vision on the advancement and progress of Bahraini women. It has become, as we wished, one of the results of our comprehensive development process that has paved the way for Bahraini women, as full-fledged citizens. Today, thanks to those efforts, women are an integral component in the process of modernisation and development, becoming more aware of their rights, in thought and practice, and capable of assuming their responsibilities with competence and confidence for Bahrain’s progress,” says HM the King. Whilst chairing the SCW’s eighth session recently, HRH Princess Sabeeka expressed her utmost pride in HM King Hamad’s unlimited support of the SCW’s work, noting that the SCW has been keen to adopt the best institutional practices and activate the roles assigned to it as a national mechanism entrusted with meeting the kingdom’s aspirations regarding the advancement of Bahraini women. “This royal support is a source of pride and honour. It is also an impetus to redouble efforts to attain more achievements that support Bahrain’s comprehensive development process,” she said.

HRH Princess Sabeeka expressed thanks and appreciation to the government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for its continuous support and fruitful cooperation with the SCW to activate its work strategies, commensurate with its priorities, which has reflected positively on the SCW’s contribution to the national economy and role in improving the quality of the services it delivers.

Furthermore, she praised the distinguished level of the SCW’s cooperation with state institutions and sectors, highlighting the kingdom’s advanced experience in implementing policies promoting gender balance in the national development process. Notably, to mark the stellar achievements of Bahraini women, HRH Princess Sabeeka unveiled the Athar Monument in December 2022. The monument was the result of a competition organised by the SCW in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in 2017 which invited submissions for a proposed monument celebrating Bahraini women. Women Empowered
Officially opened in 2007, the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre has helped and protected more than a thousand women in Bahrain by offering social, psychological and legal family counselling in the strictest of confidence. Kristian Harrison visited the organisation to find out more about its amazing work in the Kingdom.
T
he genesis of the Centre’s founding actually began in 1955 when Aisha Yateem, who the Centre is named after, started the Bahrain Young Ladies Association out of her desire to improve education and the lives of women in Bahrain. Before she passed away, she had a deep desire to establish a location to help abused woman, which came to fruition thanks to her daughter-in-law, Shirley Yateem. As a mother of four, Shirley Yateem has inherently been a women’s advocate, especially, as she says, in a region where men have more cultural advantages. “It was an incredibly proud moment when HRH Shaikha Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa opened our Centre in 2007,” explains Mrs. Yateem. “Since then, we have continued to operate and help more than a thousand families in Bahrain and we have gone from strength to strength, earning the trust of women who previously were perhaps too scared or intimidated to reach out to us.
“Of course, there are certain situations which cannot be fixed, and that’s where we also offer extensive and free services to help women in cases where they’d usually have little support. Criteria include violence, prevention from studying or working, abandonment, humiliation, prohibition from disposing of personal money and more cases.
“We are a registered charity and NGO, so we raise money through our thrift shop boutique, our annual bazaar and through regular fundraisers including monthly breakfasts. In fact, we hosted our last one on November 29 and also donated proceeds to the Palestinian cause which is important to us too.” The day-to-day running of the centre falls to its manager, Ms. Jalila Ismail Alkhabbaz, who is also a highly-trained counsellor and psychologist. “The most common reasons for women visiting the centre are infidelity and psychological problems among couples and families, as well as the deteriorating economic situation and family intervention,” explains Ms. Alkhabbaz. “Marriage counselling is one of our most important services, because in the majority of cases, issues can be solved through professional mediation and most issues are actually just stemming from miscommunication.
“Anyone enlisting our services do not have to share any of their private information without consent, and workers cannot obtain any document or record any information in the file without the consent and approval of the person using our service. Needless to say, the Centre does not provide any data or information to any entity or individual unless it obtains an official request from government institutions.” Due to the nature of some cases and their sensitivity, it is not always possible for personal attendance of clients and so the Centre has established a free hotline which is available from 7am to 6pm on weekdays.

PEOPLE | interview This provides immediate counselling to women who cannot reach the Centre with psychological and moral support and the enactment of a safety plan to minimise further incident in violent situations. The Centre has received approximately 1,320 cases of domestic violence to date, but another important aspect of its service is the continued follow-up care. Ms. Alkabbaz explains that 30 percent of cases continue to receive support long after their issues are resolved, and the women who have thrived since receiving help then support each other as a community. One such example is the case of a woman, who wishes to be referred to as Narjes, who joined the interview to discuss her story. “I was in an abusive marriage and was struggling very badly with my mental health, not knowing where to turn,” she reminisces. “I eventually plucked up the courage to come to the Aisha Yateem Centre and ever since my first session with a counsellor, I was so excited just to have someone that would actually listen to me and understand what I was going through.
to pursue a divorce from my abusive husband. I received legal aid to facilitate this, and now I am so much happier. I cannot thank the Centre enough for its help, which is still ongoing as I occasionally meet social workers to discuss my progress and attend lectures which are hosted to spread the message to the community. “Not only that, I felt confident enough to return to work and I also tell my colleagues and friends to seek out support if they are going through similar trouble.” Any reader who believes they require the support of the Aisha Yateem Family Counselling Centre can enquire about its free services either through visiting its location in Hamad Town or by calling the hotline on 17 430-488. PEOPLE | interview
Siddiqa Al-Mawali is a young, vibrant and intelligent lawyer who is making amazing strides in Bahrain as the owner of Al Haq Law and Legal Consultants. She sat down with Kristian Harrison to discuss her professional journey, her inspirations and her future plans to enable more women to establish a career in law. Can you tell us about your educational and professional background? I first realised I wanted to be a lawyer when I was nine years old. I have a younger sister and I always used to defend her in petty arguments, so our father actually called me ‘lawyer’ as a nickname! The passion stuck throughout my teenage years and my parents were amazingly supportive when I told them I wanted to actively pursue it. I eventually graduated with a law degree from the University of Bahrain. I undertook numerous courses to get as much experience as possible across the wide spectrum of law, but I took particular interest in mediation. I believe it’s so important because more cases than any other involve disputes between families and friends which can be solved without needing to go to court. I also receive a lot of cases regarding criminal and labour law, something I am extremely invested in. After graduating, as required by Bahraini law, I had to work under another lawyer and I spent three years in training before being able to pursue my own path, taking cases from small offices before finally establishing my own company.
Why does labour law in particular appeal strongly to you and what is your most memorable case? When people request help regarding their workplace, whether it is because they have been unfairly dismissed or have had their salaries withheld, I truly
98
December 2023
feel compelled to help them. Even for amounts that would be small to many of us, it can mean the difference between having something and having nothing to certain people. This leads into my most memorable case, which was actually really simple. If I told it to another lawyer, they’d laugh about it! One woman came to me after her boss refused to pay her a salary of BD60, telling me she could not fight for it. I told her that no matter how small the amount, you are well within your rights to claim it if it is rightfully yours. We fought the case successfully and she received more than BD100 from the courts, and even though it was arguably the smallest case I’ve ever taken, it was the one I feel most proud of because of how thankful she was that I’d helped her when no one else would.
What advice would you give to young women looking at entering a career in law? Being a female lawyer is a challenge in Bahrain, make no mistake. You have to be on call practically 24 hours a day. However, whatever the difficulty you have on the table, if it’s truly what you want then follow your passion because it is the most rewarding job imaginable.
What are your plans for the future? My initial goal is to transfer Al Haq from an office of law to a company. This will allow it to be bigger and in fact, I already have a deal on the table to open another branch in Abu Dhabi so I hope that I can accomplish this soon.
Anything to add? People have more rights than they think, especially expats from poorer countries who perhaps feel scared or intimidated. I’d love to find a way to educate these people more so that they know they are safe and if problems do arise, they have a legal backup to support them. Conversely, I also strongly believe that employers need education on how to treat their employees better. You can’t take passports or keep salaries, it’s totally against the law, and you have to be accountable.

Introducing
LA NOOR
Bahrainis have long been known for their creative flair which has cemented their position in various artistic fields including music, art, literature and even fashion. This month, Brand Designer and Owner of La Noor by Noor Atelier, Noor AlMaskati, tells Farah Baig about her creative process and the brand.
T
he myriad colours, lush fabrics and elegant cuts of La Noor’s stunning collection have been drawing fashion enthusiasts to the brand’s popup shop at Bahrain City Centre. Being the creative force behind the brand, Ms. AlMaskati’s vision was to create a line that is glamorous, artistic, bold, adventurous, detailed and luxurious. As a child, Ms. AlMaskati showed an interest in creativity and fashion. “I was always creating and designing different things, including clothes for my Barbies!” she reminisces. “The process from the idea to making tech packs to choosing the right fabric to having a final product in your hands is the best thing ever.” Over the years, she has developed her style and now finds inspiration through art, culture, architecture, fashion magazines, runway shows and fashion history when designing her collection. “Good construction, appropriate material, fabric choices and a good fit are essential. A good fashion designer must predict what colours, styles and shapes will be popular in the future, but a great fashion design is indeed expected to be elegant and attractive regardless of the era,” she says. “Fashion industry trends revolve in cycles and looks from the past inspire many of today’s hottest trends. There are many iconic designers in the world of fashion and haute couture like Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Ralph Lauren, Elie Saab, Zuhair Murad,” she elaborates. Ms. AlMaskati aims to uplift and empower women by guiding them through fashion. “La Noor is a cutting-edge fashion brand that epitomises the embodiment of female power and strength, while embracing the essence of femininity. We meticulously work on crafting the perfect cuts and selecting the finest fabrics, ensuring our clients feel empowered, elegant and undeniably feminine,” she says. La Noor’s current collection consists of versatile pieces that you can wear in different ways for every occasion aside from classic, essential items for every wardrobe that never go out of style. “Through our innovative designs, La Noor promises to release the inner strength within every woman, empowering them to conquer the world while exuding confidence and grace. The collection is currently available at the boutique and will soon be launched on its online shop too. “I have started expanding regionally by participating in exhibitions. However, it is our dream to see La Noor become a cherished presence in every major boutique, allowing ladies from various corners of the world to experience the transformative power of our designs,” she says. “I am fully aware that the road to global success can be challenging but with the right strategy and approach it’s possible to grow into an international business. Through our dedication to excellence, attention to detail, and commitment to empowering women, we aspire to make La Noor a symbol of sophistication and elegance globally,” she concludes.

Axing Anxiety
OPINION | parenting
Why is separation so difficult and why does it produce so much anxiety? Parenting columnist Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips on how to ease the difficulties of separation with your children.
W
e’ve all been there. It is bedtime and our little ones begin stalling with: “I need some water” or “one more story,” and sometimes: “I’m afraid,” occasionally accompanied by one big crocodile tear rolling down their precious cheek. From their lips to our hearts, these little pleas convey a much larger desire – to keep parents close, routinely disguised as a last-minute request, the last one being the most compelling in telling us why. Until approximately six years of age, young children are not fully developed as separate beings. They are highly dependent on others for caretaking, and staying close is one of the brain’s biggest preoccupations. Young children can be full of frustration, tantrums, resistance and opposition in the face of separation. Alarm in a child often arises at night-time, accumulated from the day and activated by the point of separation that sleep represents. From a parent’s perspective, it can help to remember that if our children didn’t want us close, we wouldn’t be able to take care of them. Being attached is the superglue that binds us to each other and provides a sense of home, comfort and belonging. Attachment is the doorway through which missing and separation anxiety enter. Toddlers and pre-schoolers also come with
108
December 2023
shyness instincts that make them fickle when it comes to receiving care from others. This is the result of healthy brain development by six months of age, where a child zeroes-in on one primary caretaker. At this time the child will begin to display stranger protest towards others and show a clear preference towards whom they want to be close. The instinct to shy away from strangers is nature’s way of ensuring they follow the people who are responsible for caring for them.
Here are some tips to ease your child’s separation anxiety:
• Don’t battle their behaviour nor increase
separation through discipline. It’s important not to battle against a child’s behaviour from pursuing their parent to the fears that appear at night – these are all just symptoms of the underlying separation problem. If forms of discipline are used that exacerbate the separation, such as time outs or consequences, then a child’s emotions will be more stirred up and their behaviour more difficult to manage.
• We can’t blame young children for
preferring their parents but we can take comfort in knowing they can attach to other people too. Given their strong shyness instincts, it is important that we introduce
them to the people we want to care for them. We can’t leave these relationships up for grabs but must prime it by showing them we sanction the connection. This can include warmly introducing them to each other, pointing out similarities and common interests, and conveying that you like this person and trust them. A child will follow those to whom they are attached, and if you demonstrate that you like the caretaker, they will follow suit with time and patience.
• Tears are part of the brain’s inner workings
to release emotional energy when stirred up. Tears are not a problem, they are the answer when the missing is too much. What is important is to ensure a child has someone they feel comfortable with in sharing their upset, in crying or retreating to for comfort. When they can count on someone to help them emotionally, it will build trust and security with their caretaker and help them adapt to the separation from parents.
• Attachment is one of the most important
forces in the universe that binds us to each other. Our kids want to be with us, and we want to maintain their love. What we can do is put our energy into making it easier to be apart from us by focusing on connection.
