T
hank you for joining us, Mr. Mancone! Firstly, can you share your impressive career history? I started out initially working for significant financial institutions in my native Italy, then the United States in Chicago and New York, followed by various postings in London, Germany and Ireland through roles with BNP Paribas and Deutsche Bank, leading technology transformations focusing on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain and IoT. In 2020, I joined Beyon Money, aiming to establish a unique financial services entity in Bahrain. What were the motivations behind establishing Beyon Money? The company’s goal was not to create a traditional bank but to leverage cutting-edge technology and global partnerships to offer innovative financial solutions. In other words, a financial solution resembling a bank but distinguished by speed, agility and advanced technology. Despite the challenges, we obtained the necessary licenses within eight months and we fully launched in January 2022. Our regulatory framework, facilitated by the Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB), allowed us to obtain licenses swiftly, fostering an ecosystem that enabled collaboration with regulators, infrastructure providers, technology firms and Fintech players. How does Beyon Money differentiate itself from traditional banks? We wanted to eliminate the challenges posed by legacy infrastructure and cumbersome governance structures. The idea was to create a speedboat because it’s easier to manoeuvre a speedboat than it is a tanker! The company focused on leveraging technology for a userfriendly experience, starting with a quick onboarding process via a virtual prepaid card that offered the benefits of a credit card to a diverse demographic without the traditional barriers. We then continued to broaden our services, including remittances, personal financial management and the introduction of Flexi Invest, which allows people even with amounts as little as BD10 to have a remuneration on their liquidity instead of creating hurdles of larger amounts. How influential has the Central Bank of Bahrain been in shaping Beyon Money’s journey? The CBB has played a pivotal role in opening up the market to Fintech companies, providing a regulatory framework and fostering healthy competition. Beyon Money sees the CBB as instrumental not only for our establishment in Bahrain but also in expanding to other markets by showcasing our successful model to regulators in different countries. Can you discuss Beyon Money’s international expansion strategy and current market presence? We announced last year that we are expanding,

starting in the UAE and have already obtained a license from the Abu Dhabi Global Market and are in the process of receiving one from Central Bank UAE. After this, Saudi Arabia will be next since the company aims to establish itself as a prominent player in the three major countries driving financial growth in the region. How does Beyon Money approach technology, particularly in terms of agility and user experience? Beyon Money emphasises the importance of technology, employing microservices architecture for agility and constant evolution. We release new functionalities and services regularly, ensuring that the app remains fresh and relevant to users. The emphasis on speed, precision, regulation and respect forms the core of our approach to technology. What challenges does Beyon Money face, especially concerning client engagement and financial literacy? One significant challenge is addressing varying client behaviours and preferences. Beyon Money constantly analyses client interactions with the app to enhance user experience and engagement. Financial literacy is identified as a crucial point, with efforts made to communicate the benefits of digital technology, such as virtual cards, to clients who may not be familiar with them.
compliance. However, I am very excited to lead Beyon Money into the future and it’s a challenge I relish. The key lies in maintaining speed, precision and a motivated team to meet ambitious targets consistently. What is Beyon Money’s stance on talent and skill development, especially within Bahrain? Local talent is hugely important to us and we actively seek resources within Bahrain. We aim to contribute to skill development by providing career paths for individuals entering the market. Collaboration with organisations like Tamkeen allow us to focus on equipping newcomers with the necessary skills to contribute to the growing Fintech sector in Bahrain. Anything you’d like to add? I mainly want to say that I am so proud of Beyon Money’s journey so far. I am excited to steer it into the future as CEO, making it the flagship in the GCC region and a source of pride for Bahrain. Our devotion to continuous innovation, commitment to technology and strategic expansion plans position us as a significant player in the evolving landscape of Fintech, hopefully for many years to come.
We use data mining, business intelligence and also artificial intelligence to make sure that we have a prompt evaluation of what clients like or don’t like. How does Beyon Money stand out in a competitive market, and what is its approach to constant innovation? We constantly strive for innovation, aiming to surprise and attract clients with new features regularly. We acknowledge the transient nature of client loyalty, emphasising the need to consistently offer something novel to stay ahead of the competition. How does Beyon Money ensure the security of its platform, particularly in the realm of cybersecurity and fraud prevention? Beyon Money employs a multi-faceted approach to security, collaborating with companies like Beyon Cyber and utilising AWS for secure cloud solutions. The company also partners with Visa to prevent card-related fraud and employs cutting-edge technology to combat money laundering and other potential threats. Security remains a top priority to maintain the trust of our regulators and clients. Can you discuss the growth trajectory of Beyon Money and the challenges associated with rapid expansion? As a start-up, Beyon Money has experienced rapid growth, achieving 100 percent year-onyear growth. Of course, we have to sustain this growth whilst also balancing client expectations, team performance and regulatory

Stock Picking – 101 Investing can seem like a daunting task, but with the possibility of making our money ‘work for us’, it is hardly a topic for the backburner. Business Consultant Pria Masson shows you where to start with her cheat sheet on investing in equities.
I
t’s the second month of the new year and hopefully you’ve met some of your ‘start of the year’ goals. Was the idea of making your ‘money work for you’ one of them? If not, you may want to add it to your list. With technology allowing investments and money-making avenues to be easy, accessible and available, the ‘how to’ is relatively easy. It is the ‘where to invest’ that is a big question. This month, I thought I would do a very quick cheat sheet on investing in equities. Why equities? The simple answer is ‘reasonable returns’. Equities have the potential for higher returns than simpler options like bank or term deposits. This does mean higher risk, but, that’s where a cheat sheet of how to minimise that risk, or know when you can bear the risk, will help. Keep in mind, these are my personal views and how I approach the process. These suggestions are not financial advice. Always consult with a professional advisor before making any investment decisions.

The Very Basic Basics
When you buy equity in a company, you own one or more shares of that company. So, understanding the company is critical and should be the only factor, should it not? Afterall, if the company makes money, you make money. If only it were that simple. The shares issued are traded which means, it’s a marketplace where the prices rise and fall each day. How does the price change? It changes based on how much demand and supply there is – similar to how vegetable prices change. If more people seem to want to buy a stock, the price goes up. If more people want to sell the stock, the price goes down and the final price is a calculated value of what people want to buy and sell it at. The factor to understand then is, what makes people want to buy or sell a stock? Fundamental company performance, overall “market sentiment” or how people are feeling around the future on that day and of course, the competition in the market i.e. demand behaviour and performance of other similar alternative stocks.
How to Begin
To begin with, pick a country, ideally one that you are familiar with. Most of these will have investment sites that are popular. For instance, you could go look at either Reuters or Bloomberg. Pick an industry or sector that you understand a little bit. A quick Google search will tell you which are the main listed companies in that space. Research that.
Bahrainthismonth.com
commerce
What Do You Need to Look For? These are the terms that I like to look at: P/E ratio which is the current price of the stock divided by its last listed profit. Look at this along with the PE ratio of the peers of that company. If the average P/E of the industry is higher than that of the company, you have one tick mark in place. Next, debt coverage ratio. Too much leverage is rarely a good thing. Most companies however have debt. Again, compare with the industry average and you will get an idea of how good or bad its level is. Next, I like to look at the shareholding pattern. Companies that have too much control with few sets of people, and too few shares available to public are better avoided. Finally, look through news articles and comments on websites around these stocks. It’s a treasure trove and will give a good indicator of the future and reliability of the company.
What are the Alternatives?
You most certainly can invest, and that too at a very small price. When I say this, I do not mean you need to hire a broker or advisor. What I do mean is, invest in Exchange Traded Funds (ETF’s) of a specific country if you do not belong to that country. Or, invest in mutual funds that target specific sectors that interest you. Or, in mutual funds that invest in the blue chip (top stocks) companies. These decisions are based on your risk and return appetite. A blue-chip stock usually gives modest returns, mid cap stocks have higher returns and small cap, which bear the highest risk, they have the highest returns too – if you choose right. Investing can seem like a daunting task. Yet, with information and technology, it’s a lot easier than most people realise. Today, you can invest using easy to use global platforms like Interactive Brokers or a
good online platform specific to your country. What it does need, is an interest in business, in making money work for you and in not being too afraid. Invest in a sector and company you understand, know your risk appetite, know when to sell and book profit and knowing when to stay invested. Simple advice, but, often difficult to implement in totality. Give it a try, you may find it more interesting than you think. A VISIONARY ENTREPRENEUR
In the bustling landscape of Bahrain’s logistics industry, one name stands out for its innovation, adaptability and commitment to excellence – Kulsha. Behind this success story is business prodigy Isa Haji, a young entrepreneur whose vision and determination have propelled Kulsha to remarkable heights. In this interview with Bahrain This Month, he shares his insights into his journey, the evolution of Kulsha and plans for the future.
M
r. Haji’s career trajectory began with a blend of education and entrepreneurial spirit. He completed his GCSEs and A-levels at the British School of Bahrain and is currently pursuing a degree in electrical engineering in the UK.
payments and actionable analytics, according to Mr. Haji, underlines a commitment to fostering strong, mutually beneficial relationships. Looking ahead, Mr. Haji has ambitious goals for Kulsha in 2024, including scaling the company’s growth and expanding operations into neighbouring countries to reach new customer segments and innovate.
It was his keen, youthful eye for business opportunities that led him to first develop a website selling trendy clothing targeted at Bahraini teens, leveraging his expertise in programming to create a distinctive online shopping experience. As his acumen snowballed, he co-founded Kulsha during the Covid-19 pandemic. Recognising a gap in logistics services, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), Mr. Haji set out to address this need. Initially conceived as an e-directory, the company swiftly adapted to meet changing customer needs, expanding its service offerings to provide comprehensive logistics solutions in a post-pandemic world. “Kulsha has rapidly grown since its inception, and so we expanded our services to include logistics for larger enterprises as well,” Mr. Haji says. “This shift has allowed us to broaden our market reach and significantly grow our company, adapting to the diverse needs of different business sizes.”

In a competitive industry, Kulsha distinguishes itself in Bahrain’s logistics market by offering 24/7 services and unparalleled flexibility. “Our round-the-clock availability ensures that clients have constant access to logistics solutions, crucial for time-sensitive operations,” Mr. Haji believes. “Additionally, our adaptability in meeting unique client needs, from special handling to adapting to sudden changes, sets us apart, making Kulsha a preferred choice for responsive and efficient logistics support.” Crucial to Kulsha’s operations is the integration of FinTech, facilitating instant settlements for vendors and providing valuable financial insights to help them identify and improve their operational weaknesses. This dual approach of prompt
It is not always smooth sailing, however, even with a genius at the helm. “Navigating day-to-day challenges remains integral to running a successful enterprise,” Mr. Haji believes. “From managing personnel issues such as staff availability and upholding delivery punctuality, Kulsha’s success hinges on meticulous contingency planning and adaptability from our versatile team. “Speaking of the team, we are dedicated to offering Bahrainis substantial employment opportunities, highlighted by competitive salaries and a range of benefits, fostering a supportive work environment and contributing positively to the local economy.” Despite initial scepticism due to his age, Mr. Haji’s leadership and strategic vision have silenced critics, paving the way for Kulsha’s success. Age is no barrier if innovation, effective leadership and success are achieved, he believes.

THE DRIVING FORCE
In Bahrain’s competitive automobile market, the Bin Hindi Group has excelled with its customer-friendly approach and dedication to providing quality vehicles at affordable prices. Its flagship brand, Kia Motors, is leading the way in this regard largely thanks to the excellent stewardship of its Chief Automotive Officer (CAO), Gurdeep Multani. He sat down with Bahrain This Month to discuss his career and the reasons behind the South Korean marque’s appeal in the Kingdom.
M
r. Multani has built his successful career in the automotive industry by gaining extensive experience in various roles from an executive to a general manager overseeing multiple dealership operations. After 31 years, 26 of which have been spent in the GCC, he now finds himself managing and overseeing the overall operations of the company, developing and implementing strategic plans, ensuring compliance with regulations and fostering a positive work culture in his role as CAO. One of the cornerstones of his tenure has been the complete revamp of the Kia Motors showroom in Sitra. “I am constantly looking at how to further enhance the customer purchase journey and retention in the long term which is quite critical for any dealership,” he explains. “Hence, we have started to make significant investments into our infrastructure and in line with Kia CI 2.0, this led to the showroom renovation being the first Pilot project in the Middle East and Africa region.
“One of my greatest challenges is constantly adapting to the everchanging automotive landscape, particularly in terms of technology advancements and sustainability initiatives,” he adds. 2023 was a successful year for Kia Motors and the Bin Hindi Group. It experienced strong sales growth, expanded its market presence and introduced innovative and eco-friendly models. Amongst others, it successfully launched the new EV9, Seltos and Facelift Telluride models. There was particularly strong demand for the Pegas, Sonet, Seltos, Sorento and Telluride due to their appealing design, advanced features and competitive

pricing. Kia Motors were particularly pleased to discover significant interest from young professionals and families who prioritise reliability, value for money and the latest technology in their vehicles. As for the coming year, Mr. Multani expects another fruitful one. “2024 is going to be a challenging and exciting year for us, but I am quite optimistic,” he believes. “We are aiming to increase our market share by putting the right strategies in place and outperforming the competition. We will do this with even more new models and new facilities including the Ma’ameer Premium Service and ABS centre, a facelift for our Certified Pre-Owned showroom in Khamis, a Sixt rental branch opening at Hilton Bahrain and improving our highly-regarded Bin Hindi Car Care service.” As a seasoned veteran of the industry, Mr. Multani is well-placed to offer expert advice to young professionals keen to enter the profession. “My number one recommendation would be to pursue a relevant education in engineering or business,” he states. “Additionally, gaining practical experience through internships or entry-level positions in the automotive sector can be highly beneficial. It is important to stay updated with the latest industry trends, network with professionals, and demonstrate passion and dedication towards the field. A passion for cars is standard; you need to want to learn and continue to learn to find success. “Indeed, even now, my team and I never stop pushing. We are committed to continuous improvement, customer satisfaction and environmental sustainability. We will continue to innovate and introduce cutting-edge vehicles that cater to the evolving needs and preferences of our customers and I am extremely proud of my team for constantly demonstrating their commitment and going that extra mile,” he concludes.

Valentine’s Day
Adnan & Faye Sharabi
51 years of marriage… and counting! In a heart-warming interview filled with laughter and reminiscing, Faye and Adnan Sharabi recounted the story of their unexpected meeting at the White Earth Lutheran Bible camp in Minnesota, USA, in 1971. Their backgrounds couldn’t have been more different – Adnan, a Palestinian volunteer for a government project named Upward Bound aiding Native American students, and Faye, a South Dakotan of Norwegian and German descent who was working as a lifeguard at the camp.
to Greece before settling in Bahrain through Adnan’s job with the Arab Bank PLC. What was initially intended to be a short stint turned into a 34-year sojourn in the Middle East, where they found a welcoming community and raised their family.
Despite initial cultural misconceptions, their shared values and mutual respect led to a whirlwind romance and marriage the following year in a quaint South Dakota church. The pastor who married them, Paul Larson, remains a friend.
He added: “We won’t be doing anything special for Valentine’s Day as we don’t need a specific day to celebrate our love, but the ideal scenario is for us to just be together with each other, our children (and now grandchildren!) and take them out to dinner and just appreciate our lives and companionship.”
Their journey together took them across the United States, from North Dakota to New Jersey, and eventually overseas
HAPPILY EVER AFTER
When asked the secret of an enduring marriage of soon-to-be 52 years, Adnan says: “The best advice is to agree to whatever she says! In all seriousness, tolerance, understanding and a good sense of humour are imperative.”
Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating that four-letter word that makes hearts sing – love. It’s been an exciting month for the Bahrain This Month team, meeting couples across the Kingdom to find out what brought them together. Here are their stories of love and laughter... probably best read with a Valentine’s Day playlist in the background!
Zainab Akbar and Ali Jawadi
A digital connection that flourished into real-life companionship. In a modern tale of love, Zainab and Ali found each other through the digital realm of Instagram. What began as a simple exchange about healthy green juices blossomed into a beautiful relationship filled with culinary adventures and unwavering support. Ali, initially drawn to Zainab’s homemade juices showcased on her prominent page The Food Menu, took the bold step of sliding into her DMs. Their conversations evolved from juice recipes to shared interests and eventually led to them becoming a couple. It was a digital connection that transcended screens and led to real-life companionship. For Ali, marrying a food blogger like Zainab opened up a world of culinary exploration. Previously content with basic fare like grills and shawarma, he found himself embracing a diverse array of cuisines, with sushi becoming a newfound favourite. Not only did he expand his palate, but he also ventured into the world of food blogging himself, joining Zainab on her gastronomic journeys.

“In our relationship, respect, communication and understanding is absolutely paramount,” the couple believe. “These elements form the foundation upon which love can truly flourish. We find strength in our unwavering support for each other to be the best versions of ourselves.” Reflecting on their favourite aspects of each other, Ali admires Zainab’s support and kind heart, while Zainab cherishes Ali’s ability to make her laugh and his laid-back approach to life. Their most cherished memory of their relationship is their first trip together to Istanbul, an experience which they hope to relive someday. As in any relationship, arguments do sometimes break out, but the couple have a steadfast rule to deal with it. “We resolve our disagreements before the day ends,” they state. “This commitment to open communication ensures that no issue is left unresolved or taken into the next day,
fostering a deeper connection and strengthening our bond with each passing day.”

Valentine’s Day
Jaap & Wendy Vaandrager
A couple that never goes to sleep angry. Jaap and Wendy Vaandrager are long-term residents of Bahrain and were initially introduced to each other by a mutual friend who thought they would be perfect for each other. He was right! In May, they will celebrate 28 years of marriage. “All the important events in our married life have taken place in Bahrain,” says the happy couple. “We got married in Bahrain in St Christopher’s Cathedral, all of our children were born in Bahrain and went to school here. This beautiful island has been very good to us and we are so grateful that we were able to raise a family here. We are from the same area in the Netherlands, but this will always be our second home.” One piece of advice Jaap and Wendy want to share with young couples is: never go to sleep angry! They believe it is so important to be able to have fun together and to laugh together, and if there are issues, sort them out as quickly as possible. This year, the couple will celebrate Valentine’s Day with their children in New Orleans, US.
Mohammed Al Osaimi & Lisa Daniels
Their first date on Valentine’s Day was the start of a beautiful relationship. In the heart of the Gulf, where love knows no borders, Lisa from the UK and Mohammed from Saudi Arabia have crafted a tale as vibrant as the region they call home. The duo’s serendipitous encounter unfolded at an InterNations gathering – a social soiree that set the stage for their whirlwind romance. Swapping numbers led to a delightful twist of fate as their first date materialised on Valentine’s Day, adding a touch of romance to the saga. Pampering and buttering each other up proved pivotal, resonating with the free-spirited essence of their surroundings in the open and easy-going Gulf. Navigating cultural nuances, the duo chuckled about the unconventional choice of ditching plates and utensils, a culinary quirk bridged by understanding and acceptance. On a more profound level, Lisa confronted prejudices about the Middle East, illustrating the power of education in breaking down barriers. As an Arab man with a British partner, Muhammad found humour in the surprised faces they encountered, especially from Arab women. Jokingly claiming Lisa as his cousin, they weathered the quirks of marriage, including a comical question during a medical examination about potential relatedness.

Their advice to budding couples: “Set clear expectations, be patient, go with the flow, and above all, be kind to each other.” Reflecting on their upcoming 9th anniversary since that fateful Valentine’s Day, the duo confessed to lacking concrete plans – an annual ritual where Lisa orchestrates, and Muhammad foots the bill. Love, laughter, and a dash of unpredictability define their remarkable journey through the Gulf’s cultural mosaic.

Raj Kewalram and Roshini Daswani Kewalram Navigating Love, Life and Parenthood Digital content creator and lifestyle influencer, Roshini, was born and raised in bustling Hong Kong until moving to the heart of London at Central Saint Martins, studying Graphic Design. Businessman Raj, hailing from Bahrain, met his sweetheart whilst also living in the British capital studying engineering at Kings College. Fast-forward to 2014, and the couple embarked on a new chapter, with Raj successfully convincing Roshini to move back to Bahrain with him. Today, they are proud parents to two daughters, Amyra and Eshiqa, the latest generation of a family business legacy dating back to 1922. Currently enjoying a maternity break after Eshiqa arrived two months ago, the couple took time out of their hectic schedules to tell us the heart-warming story of their romance. The tale begins at one of Raj’s house parties in 2009, where Roshini, invited by Raj’s flatmate, was immediately struck by Raj’s unending conversation. A comical night ensued with Raj and Roshini’s cousin joyously singing in Sindhi. A year later, fate intervened as they found themselves living in the same student building, paving the way for a connection that would withstand the test of time. They finally started dating in 2011. “The most obvious change in the past 13 years is the two kids that we have,” explains Roshini. “We are no longer just a couple enjoying the best of life – we are a family unit trying to be the best version of ourselves whilst working towards our goals and dreams. We met each other as 21 year olds, pretty much kids ourselves, so we have gone through life together for the good parts and the tough. We definitely understand each other a lot better and use each other’s strengths to support each other.” Reflecting on their eight years of marriage, there are numerous highlights, but one in particular calls out to Raj. “My most cherished memory obviously has to be when we welcomed our first child Amyra,” he states. “We had been together for so long and then suddenly we learned we can love someone together so much and we enjoyed every minute of it.” Recently welcoming their second child, the couple is relishing the experience of raising a newborn together, a luxury they missed during the initial stages of the Covid-19 pandemic when they were separated by travel restrictions. Raj’s involvement in night feeds and his occasional panics showcase the delightful chaos of parenting. Parenthood, they admit, is no easy feat, particularly with two children. The most rewarding aspect, however, is witnessing the heartwarming interactions between Amyra and Eshiqa, captured masterfully by Roshini’s lens. Raj and Roshini are shining beacons of what a strong relationship should be, so what words of wisdom can they impart on other young couples? “Be authentic, open and face challenges together,” they both say. “Most of all, appreciate individuality within the unity of partnership.”

Abdulla Alaradi & Sarah Alsammak The cyclist, the restaurateur, and love that blossomed over eggs and tomatoes. Sara and Abdulla met in 2012 when Sara, a keen cyclist, regularly visited Abdulla’s restaurant Emmawash for breakfast after gruelling morning rides. The couple were married in 2014 and now have a daughter.
Both are now part of two families and as public figures, whether through Sara’s large following on Instagram and her cycling passion or Abdulla’s restaurants, they get recognition wherever they go.
“After my rides, I needed protein but I didn’t like eggs at all,” Sara reminisces. “One day at the restaurant, Abdullah and I were just talking as friends and he convinced me to try its famous eggs and tomatoes, and it completely changed my mind. I would then have it every week and after falling in love with the food, I fell in love with the man!”
When asked what advice they would give to young couples, they are both in agreement. “Be yourself,” they say in unison. “From day one, just be yourself and don’t portray yourself as someone you’re not and then give your partner nasty surprises years later. Have one face, be true to each other, and never stop being friends who do things together.”
“Food is the way to a woman’s heart!” Abdulla adds.
As for Valentine’s Day this year, Abdulla is still keeping the exact plan under wraps, but rumour has it they may be making an appearance at their favourite outlet in the Kingdom, Cantina Kahlo at the RitzCarlton, Bahrain.
To the Bahraini couple, the island to them means home, family and comfort. Both actually believed they would marry non-Bahrainis, but love never takes a pre-destined course.

Tom Bourgoin and Yasmeen Zainal A multi-cultural couple brought together by the ultimate wingman – a dog named Luna! Despite attending St Christopher’s School together but not really knowing each other, a chance encounter at their local F45 gym kickstarted Yasmeen and Tom’s fairytale romance. The two started partnering up for workouts and then going for a juice or smoothie afterwards. The deal was sealed when Tom brought his beautiful dog Luna with him one day and the rest is history! After four years together, the two tied the knot in December. “We are from completely different backgrounds,” Yasmeen says, with her being Palestinian-Bahraini and Tom a FrenchDutch hybrid. “Although there are cultural differences, we embrace them and our values are in line, so we really meet each other
halfway. It also helps that Tom was born here and understands Arab and Muslim culture. But that is what is so amazing about Bahrain, the people that live here are so diverse, but are so integrated as a community. We still need to work on getting fluent in each other’s languages though; French and Arabic!
bed upset or angry! After all, you are on the same team.
“Above all though, Bahrain is our home. We were both born here, and our families live here. It is where we grew up and where we also met. Bahrain is special.”
“We love going on spontaneous dates no matter what time of year,” the couple say. “Outdoor activities like wake surfing or paddle boarding or taking the dogs to the beach for a walk are popular choices, but we also LOVE food. That can be going out somewhere or cooking together, since nothing beats a delicious home-cooked meal made with love.”
Their advice for lovebirds out there? Love each other every single day and show it in small and simple ways. At the end of the day, it is the little things that really count. Be patient with one another and never go to
As Valentine’s Day approaches, Tom and Yasmeen are still undecided. Will it be a cooking class or putting on a Bob Ross video and painting together or a spontaneous adventure under the desert stars?

Roberto Coin Epitomises Sophistication
As we celebrate love this Valentine’s Day, one might want to adorn the special woman in their life with exquisite gifts and priceless jewellery – a token of love that truly stands the test of time. The Italian jewellery brand Roberto Coin crafts necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings, rings and other jewellery staples that are timeless and effortlessly elegant. Here are the collections which caught our eye:
Adding to the Creative Family of the ‘Princess’ Collections - Princess Flower Like Roberto Coin’s coveted Venetian Princess collection, Princess Flower belongs to the creative bouquet of the Princess family of collections. The flower made of small diamonds that decorates other Princess jewels has been re-elaborated in this collection to become the focal point of each piece. It was a natural evolution for the ornamental flower to grow until it bloomed. The corolla displays all of its nuances made of gold and
precious stones. The characteristic twisted wire detail is also used here once again in the internal structure of the pieces to create a three-dimensional frame that holds the flower. Both the external part of the flower and the internal structure are created with 3D technology to guarantee the perfect proportions of the elements. Then, able craftsmen assemble the jewels, one by one, flower after flower. This special production process makes every flower in the collection the perfect result of balance and care, just like flowers in nature.
The Revolution of Elegance – Sauvage PRIVÉ
In the world of fashion, every woman is considered an explorer on a quest to discover new rules and styles in elegance. It has nothing to do with vanity. For many women, exploring refinement is a natural instinct; what they choose to wear stems from values that go much deeper than simple appearances and these women choose to be authentic and to wear their freedom, every day. Roberto Coin chose to leave the rules of classic fine jewelry behind when he created his Sauvage Privé collection. Its revolutionary shapes and colors intensify the deeply instinctive, unconventional essence that every woman possesses. With his Sauvage Privé jewels, Roberto Coin celebrates those women that he considers courageous and irresistible. The design’s unrestrained, boldfaced geometry goes far beyond innovation. The same impulse is reflected in the unusual choice of stones used to decorate the collection. Black jade, which is extremely difficult to cut, is the shiny, forceful star of the collection. And the malachite, with its naturally unique design is the perfect advocate for the company’s mission: to dedicate an exclusive piece of jewellery to every woman.

Tending the Flame
Keeping the spark alive in long-term relationships can be challenging. Edwin D’Souza brings you the best of time-tested steps to make your relationship a long and happy one. Romance novels rarely tell the tale beyond the happily ever after. The truth is, long-term relationships, as beautiful and enriching as they can be, require more than moonlight strolls and romantic dinners. The initial spark can flicker and fade, replaced by comfortable routine and unspoken expectations. But fear not, lovebirds! Rekindling the flame and keeping the spark alive is not only possible, but a delightful adventure in itself.
Here’s how you can keep the spark alive in your long-term relationship: Show your appreciation The language of appreciation is like oxygen, it fuels a relationship. Don’t let acts of kindness and support go unnoticed. Thank your partner for taking out the trash, making you coffee, or simply listening patiently. Celebrate their achievements, big and small, and express your admiration for their strengths and quirks. Let them know how much they mean to you, not just on special occasions, but every single day.
Communicate and have meaningful conversations Communication is always the most important aspect of a relationship. Having an open and honest style of communication is imperative as that is the bedrock of any relationship, but in the long haul, it takes on even greater significance. Go beyond the autopilot conversations about groceries and chores. Dive deeper, share your dreams and anxieties, listen actively to your partner’s unspoken emotions, and rekindle the art of meaningful conversations. Express appreciation, offer reassurance, and remember the power of a simple “I love you.” Cultivate emotional intimacy between each other, it oftens goes unnoticed how important it can be to show your vulnerable side and express freely to your partners, be empathetic and selfless and provide a safe space for your partner to be their authentic selves. Be their confidante, their cheerleader, and their rock. Emotional closeness strengthens the bond and fuels the emotional spark.

Rediscover the joy of learning about each other
Avoid the mundane and keep things exciting
Remember when you couldn’t get enough of each other’s stories? Rekindle that curiosity! Ask questions, listen with genuine interest, and be surprised by your partner’s hidden depths. Read their favourite book together, delve into a new hobby they’re passionate about, or travel to a destination they’ve always dreamt of. Embrace the unfamiliar and rediscover the joy of learning about each other, one adventure at a time. It is always essential to keep that curiosity alive in the relationship and take on fun activities where you will learn something new about each other.
Embrace the unexpected that comes at you, routine can be comfortable, but it can also be the enemy of excitement. Break free from the predictable! Surprise your partner with a handwritten love letter, a spontaneous picnic under the stars, a bit of kayaking, or tickets to a concert they’ve been dying to see. Let your creativity run wild and inject a dose of the unexpected into your relationship. Remember, even the smallest surprises can make a big difference.

Valentine’s Day
Embrace the impact of a physical connection In the daily grind, physical touch often takes a backseat. It has a massive impact in fostering a healthy relationship. Why? Well, that’s because it can make your partner feel better when they’re having a bad day as physical touch brings a lot of comfort, and it will only catch you by surprise how much a small hug can change your loved one’s mood for the day. In fact, the renowned American author and family therapist, Virginia Satir, famously said: “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” Interestingly enough, there is scientific reasoning behind why hugs play an important role in one’s life. Several reports state that when we hug someone, their body releases endorphins – chemicals that relieve pain and stress while promoting a sense of euphoria and happiness. It also releases the hormone oxytocin which is sometimes referred to as the “love hormone”. In fact, a lingering moment holding hands while you are on a walk together at a park can add warmth to your connection. Don’t shy away from initiating intimacy and rebuilding that physical connection that drew you both closer together in the first place. A tiny gesture of love goes a long way, so make sure you hug your significant other today.
Bond over shared experiences Shared experiences – it’s the glue that holds relationships together. Couples can go through tough times as well good times together; the fact remains, though, that going through any situation together as a couple only makes your bond grow stronger. While traversing challenging situations and troubleshooting daily problems is a significant part of a relationship, be sure to
create opportunities for new and positive memories. How can you do that? Make time for regular date nights, even if it’s just a picnic in the park or a movie at home. Try a new restaurant, take a pottery class together at A’ali Pottery Centre, or embark on a weekend getaway. Creating new memories and inside jokes will keep your relationship fresh and reinforces the sense of “us against the world”.
Laugh Laughter is the best medicine, and it applies to relationships too! Don’t take yourselves too seriously. Make each other laugh with silly jokes, playful banter, and light-hearted adventures. You could perhaps even get creative and relive the joy of your early days with water balloon fights, pillow fights, or goofy dance parties. Remember, laughter keeps the relationship fun, strengthens your connection, and reminds you of the joy you bring to each other’s lives.
Understand your individual needs While togetherness is important, nurturing your individual passions is equally crucial. Encourage your partner’s hobbies and interests, even if they don’t align with your own. Spending time apart allows you to recharge, come back with fresh perspectives, and appreciate the unique qualities you bring to the relationship. Remember, two separate, thriving flames make the fire burn brighter. On that note, while self-love may seem counterintuitive, tending to your own needs is essential for better relationships. Prioritise selfcare, whether it’s a daily meditation, a relaxing bath, or spending time with loved ones. A happy and fulfilled “you” translates into a happier and more present partner. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So, fill your own with love, compassion, and joy, and watch your relationship flourish.

MAKI’S CELEBRITY CREATION In the heart of Bahrain, Maki Restaurant stands as a beacon of culinary innovation, blending Japanese tradition with Mediterranean flair. This renowned establishment has recently unveiled a new dish named after Miss Universe Bahrain 2023, Lujane Yacoub. The ‘Lujane Maki’ epitomises the restaurant’s commitment to crafting exquisite dishes that tantalise the taste buds and celebrate individual tastes.
F
ounded in 2002 by brothers Oliver and Amer Zeitoun, Maki’s journey began with a modest 38-seat establishment, where patrons eagerly lined up for a taste of its innovative cuisine. Oliver’s passion for Japanese cuisine, combined with Amer’s agricultural expertise, laid the foundation for a culinary revolution. With a focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and a dedication to pushing boundaries, Maki has earned accolades and international acclaim. Today, Maki boasts five multiple award-winning restaurants across the region, including locations in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. “Maki has been creating a lot of namesake dishes ever since its inception,” Amer explains. “These dishes are usually created by the ownership as a tribute to celebrities and our loyal customers. We usually create a dish as per the likings of the diner and if they end up loving it, we launch it on the menu.” With the Lujane Maki, the restaurant continues this tradition, showcasing its dedication to culinary excellence. Miss Yacoub, thrilled by the prospect of collaborating with Maki, shared her excitement about the creation process when she visited the outlet at Moda Mall: “I was approached by Maki to visit and I was really excited as I’ve always been meaning to go,” she explains. “They proposed the idea of a dish under my name and I was really excited about the concept. I’d be going to Maki to experience the food as well as be a part of brainstorming process of creating a new item for the menu!

“I got to know the craftsmanship that goes into every meal they make, and for the creation of this new dish they asked me about the foods and flavours that I like. The brothers also asked what I liked from the meal I had, which included the crispy salad, their own mix of crispy harasume, yuzu flakes and much more. Hoping I gave them enough to work with, 30 minutes later they came out with an amazing platter filled with beautiful, green maki. “The presentation was gorgeous, I absolutely loved it. It was an exquisite blend of the simple flavours I loved and of course, that salad that I was really fond of was mixed in there! I’m so excited for it to be on the menu and it’s such an honour for the chefs to put so much time and creativity into this dish. What I love about Maki is how authentic its Japanese cuisine is, while at the same time incorporating their own artful twist into the menu.”

An Iconic Feast
Zahrat Al Fayrouz at Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa recently introduced ‘Fayrouz Nights’. Farah Baig visited the restaurant to discover what makes this Levantine dining experience special.
T
he luxurious Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort and Spa has earned a reputation for creating memorable stays and dining experiences. The resort’s Levantine restaurant, Zahrat Al Fayrouz, has recently launched ‘Fayrouz Nights’ which offers some of the best of Levantine cuisine and live entertainment every Thursday. As we walked through the doors of Zahrat Al Fayrouz, we couldn’t help but admire its palatial décor. Tasselled chandeliers, warm lighting, intricate wall papers and velvet embroidered seating adorned this beautiful restaurant from floor to ceiling. What really caught our attention, though, were the unique paintings which we admired as we listened to the live music duo. After being seated at one of the indoor tables, we were presented with menus that resembled vinyl records and its covers – a nod to the iconic songstress, Fairuz, who serves as the inspiration behind this charming concept. The culinary team at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, led by the talented Chef Bashar, has curated a set menu of much-loved traditional dishes. To begin, we were served a selection of cold mezzes including Hummus Beiruti, Moutabal and Warek Enab Bil Zaite with a side of fresh
Bahrainthismonth.com
bread. The Warek Enab El Zaite, which are stuffed vine leaves, were truly delicious as the rice had the perfect bite to it. I appreciated the smoky flavour of the roasted brinjal in the smooth Moutabal which kept me coming back for more. As with cold mezza, salads are a regular feature when dining on Levantine cuisine. The Fattoush and Tabbouleh incorporated the freshest of vegetables, herbs and olive oil to create salads that were truly addictive. A liberal sprinkle of sumac gave the Fattoush a satisfying burst of tanginess. This was followed by the hot mezze which included audibly crunchy Cheese Rakakat and freshly made falafel, a vegetarian option which we opted for instead of Chicken Livers with Pomegranate Sauce. Dipped in tahina, these were both quite divine. For main course, diners can choose from Chicken Molokhia, Kibbeh Bil Laban, Kofta and Batata, Salmon with Tartar and Shrimp Fatteh. The baked cubes of salmon were served on light rice, and topped with crushed pistachios and a rich yogurt and tahina sauce which elevated the textures and flavours of the dish. The Kofta and Batata thrilled us with its layers of scrumptious potatoes and baked kofta.
Apart from the selection of main courses on the set menu, we just could not resist trying the restaurant’s crowd favourite – the mixed grills. It’s no surprise that it has garnered such a following as the selection of masterfully grilled kebab, tikka and lamb chops are sensational when coupled with the char-grilled vegetables, pickles and toum (garlic sauce). ‘Fayrouz Nights’ sweetens the experience with a dessert platter consisting of fresh fruit, Kunafa, Baklava and ice cream. I had a special appreciation for the buttery baklava, and devoured spoonfuls of ice cream with the crushed pistachios. I’ve always said that delicious food, mesmerising entertainment and good company make the perfect recipe for a memorable night out. After this experience, I can say without a fragment of doubt that ‘Fayrouz Nights’ serves as a setting, just as iconic as Fairuz herself, for an unforgettable evening. Scan to watch the video

Driving with the Top Down! It’s that glorious time of year when we can roll down the windows, take down the roof and experience that rush of cool breeze as we cruise along the Kingdom’s roads. Kristian Harrison takes a look back at the history of the ultimate luxury vehicle; the convertible, and the long way this automobile design has come.
E
veryone remembers their first ride in a convertible. Hitting the open road on a beautiful day with the top down and the wind blowing in your hair – it’s an experience that’s hard to forget! The history of these beautiful machines is surprisingly convoluted. Obviously, the global conscience is to look at convertibles as the ultimate in luxury driving. However, despite its innovativeness, convertibles originally weren’t as lavish as people may think. In fact, there was a time before the turn of the 19th century when ALL automobiles on the road were open-topped, without roofs, windshields, doors or side glass. Early cars – such as the 1986 Ford Quadricycle – were just derivatives of 19th-century buggies and retained the lightweight, minimalist design that worked for horse-drawn vehicles. As you can imagine it wasn’t all that great, especially if you were out driving in your fancy motor-powered vehicle and encountered some inclement weather. Imagine not having the option to close the roof and being stuck out in the rain while traveling across the dusty landscapes of prepavement era roads. Not exactly luxurious, is it?
Bahrainthismonth.com
Thankfully, in 1905, Cadillac began producing closed-top vehicles which became a massive hit amongst consumers. By 1910, the new design became the standard, and it seemed as though the open-top concept was dead. But as they tend to do, people grew bored of the new design, and longed for nostalgia. This time, with a little control over the elements outside. So, in an effort to give the people what they wanted, manufacturers began producing the modern convertible. Those early models, emerging in the 1920s, were hardly the stuff of innovative folklore. In fact, they were usually cold, drafty, and had unreliable, difficult-to-operate roofs. Not exactly luxury living. But that all changed in 1934 when Peugeot introduced the 601 Eclipse model. A true innovation was finally introduced, as this beauty featured the first reliable, retractable hardtop roof. This concept would be expanded upon in 1939 by Plymouth, who created the first motor-controlled tops. Things were moving now! In the 1950s, the concept grew even more advanced, when Rambler introduced the Nash convertible, complete with door frames and
B-pillars that stayed in place while the roof was being let down. This allowed for greater structural integrity and got rid of the awful sound made when early models retracted their roofs. During the 1980s, the ragtop was picking up steam among the hip young crowd of car buyers, and continues to be an appealing automotive trend around the globe. As our technology and innovation grow, so too does the open-top car concept. While true convertibles tend to be reserved for fast two-seater sports cars or special brands these days, giant sliding glass roofs are taking over the convertible landscape with panoramic panels running from the windshield to the top of the backlight and from side rail to side rail. Where will the convertible be 20 years from now? Advances in structural engineering and lightweighting mean that the performance differences between closed-roof and open-top cars continues to shrink. This practicality means that drivers will have the powerful combination of choice and affordability. One thing’s for sure, they won’t be going away any time soon. Enjoy the ride!

DRIVING BAHRAIN’S LUXURY SCENE! After a few years’ absence, Bahrain This Month is bringing back one of its most beloved series: Backseat Chat! In this feature, Kristian Harrison interviews prominent figures in the Kingdom’s automotive scene from … you guessed it, the backseat of cars great and small! First up in our longawaited relaunch is Tim Price, who was recently appointed as General Manager of Porsche Bahrain.
C
an you give us an overview of your career journey and what drew you to the automotive industry? I’ve been in the automotive industry for more than 25 years, holding various roles in sales and aftersales, including managing four franchises in the UK for Toyota and Lexus before coming to Bahrain to work for Porsche. I was inspired as a youngster by a friend’s father who owned a local car sales garage, which always interested me. In fact, he gave me my first opportunity in sales. How are you finding life in Bahrain since moving here four months ago? Leaving the UK was a big decision but I always wanted to try an opportunity abroad and especially with Porsche. Thankfully it has paid off because Bahrain has been fantastic, the Bahrainis have been so welcoming and it has made my wife and I feel at home so quickly. The food here has especially been a delightful surprise; I took some recommendations from my staff as I’m a huge foodie so trying all the various cuisines available out here blows most things from back home out of the water! Could you tell us about Porsche’s upcoming developments? We’re particularly excited about our upcoming electric vehicle lineup, including new models like the Taycan, E-Hybrid Panamera and the biggest of all, the E-Hybrid 911 which customers ask me about practically every day. Very recently, we also launched the EV Macan, which has a range of more than 500km and is perfect for the Bahrain market. How does Porsche plan to address concerns about electric vehicle infrastructure in Bahrain? Porsche is actively installing free chargers at various locations across the island, including hotels and shopping centres. Additionally, every Porsche purchase comes with a free home charger installation, making charging convenient for our customers. Furthermore, we have also opened the first Porsche studio in the region at Moda Mall, which was designed to make the brand more accessible with more free charging points available.

How does Porsche prioritise customer care and satisfaction even after initial purchase?
How does Porsche Bahrain support and foster talent within its workforce?
Customer experience is paramount for Porsche. We prioritise feedback, continually improving our services based on customer input and putting them at the heart of every decision we make. Our goal is to ensure a seamless experience, whether customers are visiting our showroom or seeking after-sales support.
This area is really important to Behbehani Brothers and Porsche as a brand. We actually have a training academy on site, with a training manager where we develop apprenticeships in sales, after-sales or as a technician. We train many Bahrainis as we as a company believe that investing in local talent is hugely important to the local community and economy.
What challenges do you foresee in leading Porsche Bahrain, and how do you plan to address them? Educating customers about the benefits of electrification is a key challenge. Some misconceptions include concerns about range, maintenance costs and performance in hot climates. However, electric cars like the Taycan offer ample range of at least 400km and lower costs considering there’s no elements such as engine oil to keep on top of. We plan to bust these myths through ride-and-drive events and increasing our fleet of electric cars for customers to experience first-hand, including recently adding the Taycan into our service courtesy cars fleet.
How do you unwind outside of work? I’m still finding my feet here, but I enjoy spending time with the Porsche Club members, exploring Bahrain’s culinary scene and indulging in reading and podcasts. Rugby is a passion of mine, although finding time to play competitively is currently a challenge! Any final thoughts or messages for our audience? I’m excited about the future of Porsche in Bahrain and encourage everyone to visit our showroom, experience our latest models, and discover the thrill of driving electric. Thank you for your support! Porsche has delivered 9,135 cars in the Middle East, Africa and India region in the 2023 calendar year. This represents a growth of 11 percent growth compared to 2022, and follows a 20 percent increase the year prior. New car deliveries since 2020 have now grown 47 percent. “2023 was another year of growth for our region thanks to our exceptional Porsche product line-up, in conjunction with the efforts of our importers and staff,” says Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Manfred Bräunl. The Cayenne was again the best-selling model for Porsche in the region, in a year when a new, updated model was launched. Furthermore, it was the strongest year yet for sales of the Taycan all-electric sports saloon, which enjoyed growth of 80 per cent compared to the prior year.
“It was a busy year of exciting events and new product launches, as we celebrated 75 years of Porsche sportscars,” says Dr. Bräunl, adding that the third edition of the Icons of Porsche festival in Dubai attracted over 27,000 fans in November. The event saw the first public display in the world of the new Panamera, while commemorating 75 years of Porsche sportscars and 60 years of the iconic 911 model. “There will be several major product launches in 2024, including the all-electric Macan and Taycan models, as well as many new facility openings across the region. Therefore, 2024 will be an ‘electrifying’ year in which we continue to work hard to deliver for our Porsche owners, as well as support and empower our trusted importer partners,” concludes Dr. Bräunl.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Based on the 2005 film of the same name that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the series follows John and Jane (Donald Glover and Maya Erksine), who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. After they’re matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows the duo as they take on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. The series follows both Martin Luther King and Malcolm X from their formative years, where they were moulded by strong fathers and traumatic injustices, to their rich, parallel stories as they shaped their identities and became the change they wished to see in the world. Influenced as children by different upbringings and experiences: King by the Jim Crow-era South and life in the church before finding his voice at Morehouse and Boston University, and X growing up under the constant, deadly violence of the Klan and falling into a life of vice and incarceration where he was introduced to the Nation of Islam and found his voice. The two visionaries ultimately rose to pioneer a movement.

Prior to the album’s release, White Lung announced they would be breaking up after Premonition, and if that does end up being the case, they’ve gone out with a magnificently gutsy farewell.
Richard Dawson
Stormzy
This Is What I Mean Verdict:
A personal but unexciting release.
What’s the story? This Is What I Mean is the third studio album by English rapper Stormzy. The album was recorded on Osea Island in England during a series of music camps with a team of (according to Stormzy) “world class musicians and the best producers, writers and artists in the world” in a free atmosphere, where Stormzy prayed every morning during its creation. It was further described as an intimate love letter to music by Stormzy.
Worth a listen? Stormzy’s second album, Heavy Is the Head, addressed his status as the leading figure in the grime revival as well as his position as one of Britain’s biggest pop stars, period. This Is What I Mean is his third full-length, and it’s a much more personal affair which seems unconcerned with producing chart hits or club anthems. The songs are more intimate and confessional than Stormzy’s past work, and he’s an artist who’s never been afraid to write from the heart or reflect his faith on his albums. None of the songs on This Is What I Mean can be categorised as grime. There’s no doubt that he put his heart and soul into making this record, but it’s hard to get excited about a Stormzy album dominated by ballads.

The Ruby Cord British folk hero Richard Dawson makes music that often appears to have a strongly improvisational slant, yet a careful look at his work makes clear there’s a grand design behind it all. The Ruby Cord finds Dawson pondering the future and not feeling especially confident about it. While the narrative lines of the songs lean to the abstract, the album is set in a future time where society has fallen apart and humans exist in a state of augmented reality. It demands a certain patience from its listeners, but the superb embrace of dynamics and the interplay between his guitar and the instruments and massed voices around him build into something strikingly beautiful.
Shannen Moser
The Sun Still Seems to Move Though the rough edges of Moser’s might grate with some, the band has found the sweet spot where folk purity meets 21st century realities, and their lyrics, caught up in the mysteries of life, love, death, faith and the many joys and traumas that are the stuff of everyday life, feel deeper and more resonant in this context. The acoustic guitars and banjos walk hand in hand with strings, horns, and woodwinds, making use of a much wider palette of tonal colours, and they’ve done so with a keen eye toward dynamics.

Tekken 8 VERDICT:
Another knockout entry from the fighting favourite.
RATING:
Tekken 8, the latest instalment in the iconic fighting series, continues the tragic saga of the Mishima and Kazama bloodlines and their worldshaking father-and-son grudge matches. In this latest chapter, Jin Kazama will seek to defy his fate as he faces his father Kazuya Mishima causing war and destruction across the globe.

Tekken 8 focuses on aggressiveness and will have a new ‘Heat’ gauge system, in addition to returning gameplay features from Tekken 7, such as Rage system-based attacks, with the Rage Drive having been separated and reworked as a Heat system-based move known as Heat Smash.
GRAPHICS
Rather than recycling content, all character models are completely new and are an improvement over previous games. In addition, voice lines are based solely on the current voice actors, rather than using any from the previous games. In contrast to Tekken 7, which is powered by Unreal Engine 4, Tekken 8 is powered by the Unreal Engine 5, making it the very first major fighting game to utilise this latest game engine.

APPS REVIEW
DOWNTIME | apps
Find convenience at the very tip of your fingers this month, with these nifty apps that will help you stay organised, keep up with the weather or indulge in a musical blast from past.
Rewind: Music Time Travel Rewind supercharges music discovery by detailing which songs and albums were released on a given date. You can also browse songs released in specific years, like 1961 or 2000. This is the ‘music time travel’ aspect and works as a treat. If anything, Rewind is genuinely a must-have music app for those keen to broaden their tastes or those studying the progression of genres, styles and lyrics throughout the years.
Rain Developed by ToDark developer Dark Night, Rain is perhaps one of the most beautiful weather apps on the market. It presents a host of information sensibly, prefacing the current temperature and conditions while presenting more nerdy metrics, like radiation and transpiration. The app can also house multiple cities and towns, and you can choose to receive alerts on the hour across the day.
FoxyNotes Readwise If you’re a fervent reader who loves making notes and highlighting those texts but struggles to find a sensible way to collate all this data, consider Readwise. It allows users to remember those important moments of the books you read by saving highlights. The service also recommends snippets from those books you perhaps haven’t remembered or saved. If you often read across multiple technologies or platforms, Readwise can sync highlights across the likes of Kindle, Pocket, Notion, Evernote and Instapaper.

FoxyNotes lets you create as many notes as you care for, marking up text as you desire and categorising them. The app also packs Google Drive sync support, which makes it easy to access notes across multiple devices. There’s a premium tier that unlocks more themes and additional backup settings, but the core app will likely suit most users.

PEOPLE | interview
Bahraini artist, Enas Sistani, has been curating thought-provoking imagery addressing societal issues and current affairs. She tells Farah Baig about her journey as an artist and the objective leading her conceptual photography.
“
I don’t want to stick to photography in the conventional sense. I don’t want people to look at my photos, think it’s nice and it ends there. No, I want to be able to spread awareness and convey a message; I believe arts can play a significant role in that,” says Enas passionately. The Bahraini artist’s curated imagery remains etched in one’s mind long after you’ve seen it. Her impassioned approach to conceptual photography has encouraged conversation and action around topics including mental health, genocide, gender roles and disparities, body dysmorphia and women empowerment among others. “I believe arts as a medium can implement change as you can say so much with just one image,” she says. Despite the fact that Enas’s photographs having resonated with people across the region, and drawn the attention of BBC and CNN, she remains modest and recounts her journey to developing her photography.
WHERE IT ALL STARTED After venturing on a solo trip through Europe in 2016, Enas shared pictures she had taken on the platform X, which was then known as Twitter. “I’m a very visual person, and so I ended up paying attention to little details including the day-to-day lives of people which I captured on my phone,” she explains. The appreciation and encouragement of viewers led Enas to create the Instagram account @solovagabond where you can now find her art. “I was then encouraged to get a camera, something I was initially very much against, but then I decided to go for it,” she says. “I bought the cheapest camera that I could find. I didn’t know anything about them or how to operate them so I opted for a beginner’s camera and just started clicking,” she adds. Her initial stint with a beginner’s camera paved the road for a much bigger vision – one with lots of routes for her creativity. “I’ve worked on developing my art through trial and error, and even YouTube videos. It’s been a learning curve, and I still don’t think of myself as a professional,” she says modestly.

PEOPLE | interview CREATIVE INFLUENCES When asked about her preferred subjects to photograph, Enas explains that her interest in photography began with, and is still, street photography. “Being an artist with many mediums, I sometimes write poetry; street photography reminds me so much of poetry,” she says. “When you capture one scene, it can tell you a gazillion stories. Everyone is open to interpret it. So, you look at it and maybe it means something to you but it could mean something very different to me. I just find it beautiful,” she explains. Her interests soon branched out to encompass conceptual photography as she wished to raise awareness and share her
personal experiences too. This served as a great tool for Enas to shed light on topics and encourage spirited reactions. “I don’t go for a topic blindly but rather research them meticulously so they are well represented. Most of my conceptual projects are based on my own experiences, but then there are others inspired by those of my loved ones or, in some cases, society,” she says. “The sheer number of responses I receive from people sharing that they have been through the same thing encourages me to explore topics that resonate with people,” she adds.
STANDING WITH PALESTINE The conflict that is currently unfolding in Gaza, Palestine has garnered worldwide attention. Enas, not being one to shy away from current affairs, has been aptly capturing the emotions of supporters attending the peaceful protests in Bahrain. “Through these peaceful protests you’re able to highlight public opinion and build that pressure so more people become aware of what’s happening. Some people may believe
that there is no point in attending but I see it as a collective effort which has a ripple effect as other countries are now doing the same thing,” she says. At the time of the interview, Enas recounted that the previous weekend’s protest had been covered by international news channels. “There is a positive outcome to it: it drives conversation around the subject. They’re speaking up,” she says.
Enas has not only been documenting these rallies, but has also delivered an impassioned speech at one of them which garnered a widespread reaction. Through the imagery captured at the peaceful rallies, she hopes to achieve change. “I have Palestinian friends, and when I post these images, it helps me show them that they are not alone. It helps us show that we are connected and that we feel for them,” she says firmly.
LET’S TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH Enas’s series on mental health drew wide-spread recognition starting with a feature from BBC that went viral. The powerful imagery on mental health featuring props, and quotes written on her face, were an impassioned depiction of her own triste with mental health. “With the mental health series especially, when I created these images, a lot of people approached me saying that they have been going through the same thing and feel like they can’t talk to anyone about it. Some of them felt like I was representing them which they appreciated,” she says. Some of Enas’s followers have shared that they sought therapy after coming across the series – a reaction that Enas finds greatly rewarding. “It’s just being able to see that change first hand that’s great. I would love to keep doing that forever,” she says. “It makes me happy that people can relate to my photography. There is always that bridge where it connects me to them. And it’s interesting to see where they are and how they feel and what they’re going through when seeing my photos,” she adds.
Womanthismonth.com
THE NEXT STEP IN the foreseeable future, Enas hopes to highlight more topics from a conceptual photography concept, but also hopes to delve into art installations. “With arts in Bahrain, I believe we could use more sponsorship. I have a list of ideas for installations but everything would have to be out of pocket so they are on hold,” she says. “I’m very much interested in like combining arts with sort of like social aspect of it like civic engagement. Maybe it’s going to be like sort of like a bridge between the two of my passions, which is helping people while creating art.”

“Stay Safe!” Sending your child out by themselves can be a scary time for parents. Woman This Month’s Parenting Columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, shares her thoughts on when it is ideal to allow kids to go out by themselves. We love our kids and just want them to be safe. So, naturally, it can be difficult to decide what age is appropriate for our kids to be allowed to go out by themselves. It’s important for us to understand that allowing our children go out alone can help prepare them for adulthood. Someday our kids will turn 18 and will head to college or look for a job all too soon. So, the best way to ensure they’re prepared and confident to step out into the world is to allow them to be somewhat independent as teens.
There are a couple of very important questions you need to ask yourself, as you prepare them to go out on their own: this process slowly and ensuring that your child is ready before fully What should you consider before allowing them to go out committing. Let this be a time that they prove to you they can handle the on their own? First, you should consider the maturity level of your child. You know how far along they are in overall maturity and whether this is something they can handle. If not, it may be something you need to introduce later on. However, if you think your child might be ready to take this step, then move forward with setting rules. Another important factor to consider before allowing your child to go out alone is the overall safety of where they’ll be going. Make sure you know who they’ll be spending time with, including friends and parents. But sometimes, that isn’t enough to consider.

What rules should I set for my child? The best way to ensure your child’s safety and your own peace of mind is to set some firm rules for them. Doing this can ensure that they’re safe, where they’re supposed to be, and, most importantly, come home at the end of the day.
If you’re unsure how your child will handle this new independence, it may be best to ease them into it. There’s nothing wrong with doing
Here’s what you need to consider:
Phone
Now is a great time to consider getting your child a phone of their own if they don’t already have one. They can use it only when they’re out of the house alone to keep in touch with you. What you have them do with it at other times is up to you.

Curfew
Another good rule to set is to plan for a curfew. You should set a time that makes sense for your child and their schedule. Curfews don’t have to be concrete times that your child must be home. Feel free to give them a window of time to show up before you start getting worried. You can also consider setting a time to leave rather than a time to be home. Then, wherever your child is, they won’t feel the need to rush home. They just need to be on their way by a certain time.

Who They See
One important rule that you should put in place is who your child should see when they start going out alone, just in case you can’t reach them. Something as simple as their phone dying can cause a lot of unneeded stress.
Next, you’ll want to clarify how often you expect to hear from your child when they’re out by themselves. This is a rule that shouldn’t be left with any questions because it’s important that you hear from them regularly to ensure they’re safe.
Keep Your Word
This goes for both you and your child. Once you start allowing them to go out by themselves, you both need to be held accountable for keeping your word. Yes, your child needs to be honest with you about whatever they’re doing to be safe, but it’s also important for you to be honest about your expectations of them.
Transportation Options
You should set clear boundaries with your child about how they can get to places. Be sure to let them know what methods of transportation are off-limits. For example, be clear on whether or not public transportation or riding in cars with older friends is allowed. Or you can ask your child to inform you before they get in the car with someone then again once they’re safely at their destination.
Overall, your child should be allowed to go out alone at around 13 years old or so — as per the experts. Keep in mind this isn’t going to work for every child. So, you may need to adjust the age based on your child’s maturity
Happy parenting!

Understanding Heartbreak Dealing with heartbreak, of any kind, can be one of the most challenging things a person goes through. Recognising the significance of acknowledging and managing these emotions, Joslin Gracias, a CDA-licensed psychologist at Thrive Wellbeing Centre in Dubai, shares her strategies for navigating emotional turbulence.
H
eartbreak, an inevitable facet of the human experience, often leaves individuals grappling with intense emotions and uncertainty. Heartbreak, whether stemming from the dissolution of a romantic relationship, the loss of a loved one, or other impactful life events, can trigger a range of emotions, including sadness, grief, anger and confusion. Effective coping strategies to navigate the turbulent waters of heartbreak are necessary. We all have dealt with heartbreak in relationships and friendships and know the grimness of the pain it brings. It’s a mixed bag of emotions we have no choice but to deal with. While we have different ways that we each like to handle and deal with breakups, I like to think of the five stages of grief when dealing with heartbreaks.
Stage 1: Denial
Not wanting to deal with difficult emotions that encompass heartbreak is denial, and being aware of this can help us understand our process better instead of pressuring ourselves to get over it.
Stage 2: Anger
It is expected that we start to resent our expartners or friends for being a cause of the emotional upheaval and pain. We must allow

ourselves to acknowledge the anger that we are feeling and find healthy outlets like journaling, self-talk and expressing it to a nonjudgmental friend.
Stage 4: Depression
Stage 3: Bargaining
Stage 5: Acceptance
This looks like trying to see if there is still hope or finding a middle ground to deal with the pain caused. Wanting to get rid of the pain becomes the primary goal.
It’s normal to feel sad when going through heartbreak. Also, the reality that nothing can change the situation causes depressed feelings. It takes time, but when you reach this stage, you will gather all the broken pieces and be able to face reality. This part cannot be rushed or demanded; it’s a process.

Allowing oneself to move through all the stages of grief, and being aware that these stages aren’t always linear and that you can keep jumping between these stages, can help us process and heal from heartbreak. Different coping strategies to deal with heartbreak whilst being aware of the grieving process can be helpful, while behavioural goals can help deal with the emotional turmoil of breakups.
Navigating heartbreak requires a delicate balance of self-care and seeking support. Practising selfcompassion is crucial—being kind to oneself amid adversity helps manage heartbreak’s emotional toll. Finding a ‘window of tolerance’ through mindfulness, yoga, hobbies, and relaxation aids in maintaining stability.
Additionally, leaning on a supportive network of friends and family creates a safe space to share feelings and seek solace. Embracing temporary distractions offers relief from overwhelming pain without ignoring the healing process. Setting boundaries, both with the source of heartbreak and others, allows for personal healing at one’s pace. Moreover, focusing on introspection and personal growth aids in finding meaning amid the emotional turmoil, fostering resilience beyond the immediate pain, and facilitating a healthier emotional state post-grieving stages. After a breakup, being open and vulnerable again takes time and depends on whether you have processed your emotions and healed. Take your time to process your feelings. Learning to regulate your emotions is a skill that you master over time that helps you be more resilient; having said that, being resilient does not mean the heartbreak journey gets easier. It only means you will make healthier healing choices.
