new year

NEW YEAR, NEW YOU

UNVEILING YOUR BRIGHTER 2024

As the confetti settles, a familiar feeling stirs within us. The fresh promise of a New Year, blank pages in a calendar waiting to be filled with adventures, ambitions and perhaps, a sprinkle of reinvention. We whisper ‘New Year, New Me,’ a mantra brimming with potential but often laden with pressure.

B

ut what if this year, we approached ‘New Year, New You’ differently? Instead of drastic overhauls and unrealistic expectations, let us focus on sustainable choices, self-compassion and attainable goals. Let us cultivate a kinder, brighter 2024, where growth feels organic and every day carries the spark of joy. We must be mindful and vigilant as the New Year begins and not take a day for granted. Before diving into resolutions, ask yourself – what truly matters to you? Do you crave creative expression? Deeper connections? A healthier lifestyle? Identifying your core desires gives your goals direction and a sense of purpose. Lofty ambitions are inspiring, but overwhelming. Instead, focus on micro-changes you can easily incorporate into your daily routine. Take a 15-minute walk instead of scrolling mindlessly, swap sugary snacks for a piece of fruit or prioritise sleep. These small

14

January 2024

victories snowball into significant progress over time. Practice gratitude by acknowledging and appreciating the blessings in your life. Counting your blessings fosters a positive mindset and cultivates a sense of contentment and fulfilment. Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, big or small. Did you finally finish that book? Take yourself to a movie. Conquered a challenging workout? Treat yourself to a relaxing bath. These self-celebrations keep you motivated and reinforce positive habits. It is always important to make sure we rethink the choices we make and be conscious with our decision-making and have sustainable choices this year. Always be mindful of your purchases. Do you truly need that new gadget, or can you repair your existing one? Can you support local businesses and farmers’ markets, reducing your carbon footprint? Conscious consumption extends beyond material goods – evaluate

your energy usage, minimise food waste and embrace reusable alternatives. We are often caught up with the technologybased world and forget the importance of being around nature and fresh air. Immerse yourself in the natural world. Take a hike, garden in your balcony or simply observe the changing seasons. Nature has a restorative power, reducing stress and fostering a sense of connection to something larger than ourselves. Taking care of oneself is vital for sustainable well-being. Focus on adopting habits that promote physical, mental and emotional health. This can include regular exercise, a balanced diet, quality sleep and engaging in hobbies that bring joy and relaxation. With the world moving at such a fast pace, we often miss out the little things in life and forget to appreciate them as much as they should be. This year, resist the fast-paced, always-on mentality. Dedicate time for hobbies,

Bahrainthismonth.com

new year

unplug from technology and savour simple pleasures like a home-cooked meal or a meaningful conversation. Slow living allows you to appreciate the present moment and reduce your environmental impact. We often berate ourselves for perceived shortcomings. Instead, practice selfcompassion. Replace harsh criticism with encouraging affirmations. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. You are not a productivity machine, nor are you flawless. Accept that hiccups and setbacks are inevitable. Forgive yourself for occasional missteps and learn from them without dwelling on the past. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body and soul. Take a long bath, listen to calming music or indulge in a creative pursuit. Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for your well-being and fuels your capacity to thrive. When we set goals for ourselves every year, we often do not take in all the possibilities which in-turn leads to a lack of focus on the main agenda. You must make sure to set goals that are SMART: ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.’ Instead of ‘get healthy,’ aim for ‘walk 30 minutes, three times a week for the next month.’ This clarifies your goal and increases your chances of success. Never forget the journey is just as important as the destination. It is in the journey that we learn more about ourselves and build character, be sure to enjoy the journey and celebrate the small wins and acknowledge your progress along the way. Fixating on perfection only leads to discouragement.

Bahrainthismonth.com

Life throws curveballs and your journey may be hindered at times and you will be forced to move off track. In moments like these it is crucial to have a moment to reflect and reset, stay adaptable and adjust your goals when needed. Do not let minor setbacks derail your progress. Instead, see them as opportunities to learn and refine your approach. Remember, your ‘New You’ is not a transformation that happens overnight. It is an ongoing journey of growth, discovery and self-acceptance. Embrace the imperfections, celebrate the milestones and prioritise your well-being. In this kinder, more sustainable approach, you will find that the ‘New Year, New You’ isn’t a pressure-filled resolution, but a joyful unfolding of your authentic self. So, as you turn the page on 2024, do not aim for a drastic overhaul. Instead, plant the seeds of intention and nurture them with selfcompassion, day by beautiful day.

interview

PROPELLING DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS Bahrain and Pakistan enjoy a long-standing diplomatic partnership, with the South Asian nation being one of the first to establish relations in the Kingdom in 1971. Kristian Harrison spoke to the Ambassador of Pakistan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Saqib Rauf, about his diplomatic career and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations. Your Excellency, thank you for sitting down with us! Firstly, can you give us an overview of your career journey to date? I joined the diplomatic service of Pakistan after completing my Master’s in Economics from the University of Sindh. Along the way, I did another Master’s in Diplomatic Studies and Public Administration from the Australian National University. In my foreign assignments, I’ve served in New York, Tehran and Brussels. I spent one year in Italy as well for my language learning module. What are your initial impressions of Bahrain now that you’ve had a little time to settle in? I’ve been in Bahrain for two months now. I must say it is one of the most hospitable countries that I’ve seen. The people are very warm, polite and highly educated. Bahrain has a welldeveloped physical and industrial infrastructure and is taking serious steps to stay ahead of the curve by focusing on emerging fields of artificial intelligence and cyber security. This reflects the visionary leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

Bahrain and Pakistan have a long and strong diplomatic relationship. How proud do you feel to be one of the custodians of this relationship and what are your immediate plans to bolster ties through 2024? Pakistan was one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Bahrain. The relations between our people, however, go centuries back. We share a number of similarities in our language and culture. For me, it is a great honour to act as a bridge between our two countries. This is a serious responsibility, but the ambassadors have a very elaborate network of support from their colleagues in the diplomatic circle. So with

16

January 2024

the cooperation of my team at the embassy, our colleagues in Bahrain’s Embassy and Consulate General in Pakistan and our Ministries of Foreign Affairs, we strive to perform this responsibility. In 2024, according to the vision of our leadership, we plan to take stock of what we have achieved so far and how we can build further on our existing ties. Once this plan of action is discussed and agreed at the start of the year, we hope to work towards implementing this plan. This was something which was suggested by diplomat par excellence, Foreign Minister HE Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani.

What are the longer-term goals you wish to achieve by the end of your tenure in Bahrain?

I believe in building things gradually. At the moment, we have identified some concrete proposals, which are under discussion. These cover cooperation in various fields ranging from economic and trade cooperation, law and order and issues related to Pakistani labour. I am sure these discussions will lead to some fruitful outcomes and pave the way for further cooperation.

What is the current state of relations between Bahrain and Pakistan? What are some of the key areas of cooperation between the two countries? Our two countries have close political, commercial and defence relations. There is regular interaction between our respective leaderships. We have a large community in Bahrain, which is generously hosted

Bahrainthismonth.com

interview by our brothers and sisters in Bahrain. This community plays the role of a bridge between our peoples.

What are some of the challenges facing the Bahrain-Pakistan relationship, and how do you plan to address them? I don’t see any challenges as such. However, there are always opportunities to build on an already-solid relationship. The two countries, for example, can work together in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics and cyber security. Similarly, in traditional areas of economic cooperation as well, we always have room to broaden bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit.

What are the trade figures between Bahrain and Pakistan? What are the main imports and exports? Bilateral trade is in the vicinity of around USD1 billion. From our side, we mainly export agricultural and food items such as meat, fish and vegetables to Bahrain. From Bahrain, we are primarily importing oil and petrochemical products. However, there is a surge in trade in services as well. Overall, the balance of trade has remained in favour of Bahrain by a considerable margin.

What can the Pakistan government do to support Pakistani businesses and entrepreneurs who are interested in expanding into the Bahraini market?

Interestingly, we are already working on it. One of the key challenges for Pakistani exporters to introduce and distribute their products in Bahrain has been the absence of any major Pakistani supermarket in Bahrain. Similarly, Bahrain offers a very attractive investment regime. We are approaching Pakistani businesses to inform them of these opportunities and intend to get them in touch with the relevant Bahraini agencies here.

Approximately how many Pakistanis reside in Bahrain and in what fields do they work? By our estimate, there are approximately 80,000 Pakistanis in Bahrain. They are working as professionals including doctors, engineers, bankers, chartered accountants, businessmen and labour workers.

What are your ideas to boost tourism between the two countries and are there any cultural exchanges planned? Gulf Air has regular flights operating to and from Pakistan. Similarly, there are some flights of Pakistan International Airlines. In the past, we have been in touch with these airlines to see how this easy travel between the two countries can be leveraged more for tourism. As for cultural activities, you’ll see the Pakistani diaspora in Bahrain actively celebrating Bahrain’s National Day. These events are a venue of projecting and introducing our younger generations with

culture of both countries. Some performers were recently invited by Pakistani doctors for a music event and similarly, Bahrainis in Pakistan have been invited to their events by the respective embassy.

What is your message for the Pakistani community in Bahrain? Our community is fully aware of the generous hospitality which is extended to them by our Bahraini brothers and sisters. They as a community, and we as their embassy here, are grateful for the opportunity that Bahrain provides to these people to work productively to the benefit of both countries. My message to them, I am sure though that they are already doing it, is to work with dedication for the progress and prosperity of Bahrain.

Outside of your ambassadorial duties, what is your main hobby? I try to work out, though it is not very regular! Reading, however, is a life-long hobby and I enjoy a mixture of both fiction and non-fiction.

Anything more to add? I’d like to thank Bahrain This Month for this opportunity to discuss the beautiful relationship between our countries, and I also extend our felicitations to our brothers and sisters in Bahrain on their recent 52nd National Day and wish them a prosperous New Year for 2024.

Developing Multi-Faceted Bilateral Relations

Bahrain and France enjoy a longstanding diplomatic partnership stretching back more than 50 years. Recently, His Excellency Eric Giraud-Telme became the new French Ambassador to the Kingdom. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss his diplomatic career, his first months in post and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations. 18

January 2024

Your Excellency, welcome to Bahrain! Could you give our readers some insight into your diplomatic career?

Firstly, I would like to say it is a great pleasure to meet with your renowned magazine, which has been part of my readings since my arrival in Bahrain. In short, my career abroad has been mostly oriented towards the Arab world, with different postings in Libya, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Before coming to Manama, I had the chance to be a diplomatic advisor to the Arab World Institute in Paris, which is a unique foundation, dedicated to a better knowledge of the Arab world, and to deepen the links

between France and the Arab countries. This institution presented some years ago a beautiful and successful exhibition on the history of Bahrain and its treasures.

What are your first impressions of Bahrain, having had a little time to settle into your new role? I was lucky enough to have visited Bahrain some years ago and my impressions are today as they were at that time. Bahrain is a great and interesting country, marked by an impressive age-old civilisation. Its heritage is of big interest and France is glad to have an archaeological mission working here, in cooperation with the Bahrain Authority

Bahrainthismonth.com

interview

for Culture and Antiquities (BACA) since 1977. The people of Bahrain, who are so welcoming, have shown their attachment to their history and they cherish and preserve their precious heritage. Bahrain is a country of openness, tolerance and coexistence, which you can feel every day.

How would you describe the current state of relations between France and Bahrain? We are now celebrating more than a halfcentury since the opening of the French embassy in Bahrain. The relationship between France and Bahrain is not only excellent, at the highest level, but also rooted in history: even before the establishment of an embassy, the Alliance Française was already active here. Important French companies were also already settled in this country. We have since then, developed a very trustful and multifaceted relationship in security, economy, education, health, culture, justice and more.

What are the key priorities for France when it comes to diplomatic relations with Bahrain? Firstly, I believe Bahrain has a young and promising generation, which is very well educated. I would love our diplomatic relations to focus on the youth to develop a better understanding of the opportunities, especially in training, for our respective countries. Take the economy; the position of France as the first destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Europe is not known enough. Reversely, we have started to explain opportunities that Bahrain has to offer to our SMEs. Another priority for me is culture and French language: I can feel the appeal of the French language among the Bahraini people. I know it can be challenging, and there is room for progress even more to provide a quality French learning education. It is a real asset to have access to the French speaking world and markets from West Africa to Canada and Asia. The iconic ‘French international lycée MLF’ in Bahrain, welcomes many students of Bahraini and other nationalities and is a key element in that regard. I call on families in Bahrain to consider choosing that school of excellence for the education of their children.

Can you discuss any ongoing or upcoming bilateral initiatives or projects between France and Bahrain? We have two major initiatives, one regarding judicial cooperation and the other one in favour of youth and sustainable development. France works closely with the Bahrain Judicial & Legal Studies Institute on judiciary cooperation. Our best experts in the French judiciary are involved and one major focus of this cooperation is alternative sentencing. This month, a dozen of Bahraini judges and lawyers are going to travel to Paris and be in touch

Bahrainthismonth.com

with all the relevant institutions in France. Another example is the Green Youth Hackathon, a project deployed for the first-time last year. It aims at supporting the development of sustainable entrepreneurial projects in Bahrain. Participants designed an entrepreneurial project focused on sustainable development goals, namely responsible consumption and production, and the fight against climate change. This project will be repeated in 2024, focusing on other SDGs this year.

What are the current trade figures between France and Bahrain? The level of exchange between our two countries is good and has picked up quite significantly after the period since Covid-19. We are happy to observe a trend increasing by more than 80 percent last year over the year before. Hopefully, we will be able to catch up the level of 2019, which was close to EUR700 million on a yearly basis. Furthermore, we have a very dynamic and active French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bahrain, that is leveraging on three main activities to enhance economic and trade cooperation between the two countries: providing business services to French companies willing to establish a business in Bahrain, promoting Bahrain as a trade destination for French businesses and entrepreneurs, and leading a community of French and Bahraini businessmen and women through different networking events and sectorial committees.

Are there any current or planned cultural and educational exchanges between France and Bahrain? The French archaeological mission has played a leading role in understanding the various civilisations of the Gulf in antiquity, and the Dilmun culture, on the site of Qal’at Al-Bahrain, where it was active for 30 years. Headed by Julien Cuny, the mission will travel back to Bahrain to study the Hellenistic necropolis of Abu Saiba and its Tylos culture. Last year, the famous Musée du Louvre opened the exhibition ‘From Dilmun to Tylos’, bringing together an exceptional collection of over 70 pieces from the National Museum of Bahrain. France also supports the most cutting edge know-how, like in the fashion industry. A major fashion show will be held in early 2024, at which participants will be able to present their collections on the theme of ‘the revisited abaya’. The embassy will reward the best designers by offering them the opportunity to study in Paris at the ‘Institut Français de la Mode’ as part of a short programme.

How does France view Bahrain’s role in regional security and stability in the Gulf? France and Bahrain have a strong security cooperation, aligned on sharing an important

goal: preserving the freedom of navigation, especially in the Gulf, and regional security. Secondly, I would say that the geographical position of Bahrain in the Gulf makes it act as an important contributor to regional security and stability.

What are the major challenges or obstacles to further strengthening the relationship between France and Bahrain? I would say that the main challenge is that I have so much ambition for this relationship and we have so much to do, in so many areas, that I believe I don’t have enough hours in my day to reach my goal! More seriously, I believe the challenge of this mission is to take into account different trends in a quickly changing environment, on many topics: climate change, digital life, etc. We need to be flexible in our policies and adapt our common responses.

What are your main goals as Ambassador both in the short term and longer term? On the short term, with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, we have a major milestone in front of us, a celebration of sport and the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect, with a focus on openness, accessibility and inclusiveness. It will be the first one to welcome as many men and women athletes. I want to leverage it to strengthen sports cooperation between our countries. As a tool for education, health and social inclusion, the Olympic and Paralympic Games Paris 2024 is a unique opportunity to bring more sport into the lives of all our citizens both in Bahrain and France. It is an opportunity for an entire country to awaken its inner champion, but it is also an event that works for everyone, of every generation, in every nation. We would like to help promote more common initiatives in Bahrain, particularly among young people, support initial and further training in the field of sport and get French and Bahraini athletes to work more together. On the long term I am committed to work in order to enhance the bilateral relationship in all fields, with the help and support of all the French actors in the country, the ‘team France’ as we call it, with my great team of the Embassy, and of course with our Bahraini friends.

Is there anything you’d like to add? Yes, I would like to add that I am so grateful to the Bahraini authorities and the people of Bahrain for their nice and gentle welcome of my family and myself. I am looking forward to meeting more people and discovering more of your beautiful country. And finally, I would like to wish every single one of your readers a wonderful and prosperous New Year, full of joy and happiness for them and their families!

A FIGHTING FUTURE

Bahrain has become a global MMA hub in recent years with its hugely successful Brave Combat Federation. Recently, former UFC Heavyweight Champion and current global ambassador Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira visited the Kingdom to attend the marquee Brave CF 80 event, and Kristian Harrison caught up with him to find out more about his stay.

M

r Nogueira, better known as Minotauro, is one of the most popular faces in the world of MMA, with legions of fans around the world. The native Brazilian, alongside his twin brother Rogerio, impressed during a storied career with a magnetic personality and a priority on showing respect.

There are few men in the world with as much knowledge of MMA as Minotauro, and he was keen to sing the praises of Brave as a high-level production event with a very high level of skill. In return, many of the fighters sought him out for priceless advice on how to take the next step in their career.

Now in his new career as an ambassador, Minotauro gets to travel the world doing what he loves; seeing all kinds of promotions and finding the next generation of UFC fighters. In the last three months of the year, he witnessed more than a thousand fights.

“For me, I would always tell a young fighter to maintain the highest level of respect they can. Some fighters, they like pressure talk. Some like to promote themselves, but then they just lose control and it gets nasty. The principle of martial arts is respect. I trained in martial arts since I was four years old and the first thing I learned was to bow to the mat and my opponent. When you bow to someone, you thanks him for using his body to get better and obtain more knowledge. I love it when fighters go hard at once another, but once the fight is done, they give a hug.”

Before he even got to Brave, Minotauro was glowing about his opinion of Bahrain. “First of all, I’d like to say I’m in love with this country,” he exclaimed. “It’s beautiful, the people are so receptive and it’s a modern place which loves its combat sports. I definitely came at the right time to see all the National Day lights and festivities! “When it came to Brave itself, I found it an incredible promotion. Ultimately, I’m here because we need new talents and to find the next generation of our sport. Obviously I have a focus on Brazil, but I find gems in other parts of the world too. To see what His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa has achieved since 2016 really shows what can be accomplished with investment and bringing the best coaches and trainers. It really impressed me. “I truly believe that if they keep going, they can host a full UFC event in Bahrain just like they do in the UAE.”

Away from the ring, Mr Nogueira and his twin brother have created a social project, called Beyond Borders, aimed at ‘transforming lives and turning dreams into opportunities.’ The ultimate goal is to help children in Brazil learn physical education by developing technical and socioemotional skills. If successful, the brothers hope to spread it around the world. As for Minotauro, he hopes to return to the Kingdom in February. “We have plans to potentially open a gym here next year and I will bring coaches from the Brazilian MMA teams to learn what they do here.”

Ringing in the Future of Hospitality With a 25year career in investment management, strategic and financial planning, M&A, it is no surprise that Ahmed Janahi was appointed as Group Chief Executive Officer of Gulf Hotels Group (GHG) recently. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss his vision for the company, the importance of leadership and the current state of the Kingdom’s hospitality industry.

26

Bahrainthismonth.com

interview

Can you tell us about your career so far and how you plan to lead GHG into the future? My background is mostly in investment, so I spent most of my time and years of experience in the real estate and hospitality sector. I’ve been with the GHG board since 2016 and my view is that the company has huge potential to grow. We have a portfolio of hotels and branded residences in Bahrain, including the Gulf Hotel, Crowne Plaza, Novotel, Asdal Gulf Inn, Gulf Executive Residences, the Bahrain Airport Hotel, plus properties in Dubai and Zanzibar.

What would you say is the most exciting part about being the group CEO? Being CEO of a renowned hospitality management company with over 50 years of industry experience and backed by strong shareholders, it really brings endless opportunities for the future I look forward to witnessing the thriving potential of this organisation, as we all aim to make a lasting and positive impact on our local community.

With your extensive experience in investment management, how do you plan to leverage your expertise in order to drive growth and profitability for GHG? We’ll be overseeing our assets and actively managing them to improve their performance. This involves working with the management of each of these assets through regular monitoring and assessing the financial and the operational performance to identify opportunities for growth. So that’s the idea. We’ll also create value and synergy across our operations by streamlining processes and sharing resources and services.

In your previous roles, you have been involved in mergers and acquisitions. Can you discuss any potential strategies for expansion or acquisitions that you have in mind for GHG? Our DNA is to grow organically and through acquisition. For example, we recently announced our expansion to Saudi Arabia and that will be our priority market that we will be looking to acquire and develop hotels across major cities including Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah in partnership with local investors and developers.

The hospitality industry has faced significant challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. How do you plan to navigate these challenges and position GHG for future success in a postpandemic world? The hospitality industry has recovered and witnessed a steady growth post-pandemic across all KPIs. For example, if we look at STR data, the occupancy rate has gone up from 50.6 per cent to 52.6 per cent over the last 12 months. The other important aspects is that the government is also

investing in hospitality and I would say tourism and the number of visitors is very promising. As per the BTEA, we had 5.9 million visitors arrive in Bahrain for the first six months of 2023. The target is 14.1 million of visitors by 2026. The recent agreement between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to promote the two counties as a common tourist destination is also expected to attract more visitors and create further demand for hotels.

Development is a key aspect of staying competitive in the hospitality industry. What are your plans for expanding and improving GHG’s portfolio of properties and services? As mentioned, Saudi Arabia is the main target of expansion through either acquisition or development. We’re already in the process of discussion with several local investors and developers to develop hotels and branded residences in major cities of KSA. With regards to Bahrain, we have a plan for numerous developments focused around extending our food and beverage offerings outside the hotel. We will be developing multiple premium restaurants in Block 338 which we will be announcing shortly.

The customer experience is vital in the hospitality industry. How do you plan to enhance and personalise the guest experience at your group? I completely agree with that, which is why it really is a priority for us and will continue to be so in order to deliver exceptional guest experience across our hotels and restaurants. We will strive to continue to improve the personalised services we offer and enhance the amenities and the facilities using innovative technology.

How will you use technology to improve operational duties as well as customer experience? Technology innovation is one of our key initiatives for 2024. We have already started the process of digital transformation, which covers all aspects of an improved booking experience such as a mobile app for booking, in-room technology, a loyalty programme and more.

What plans are being put in place when it comes to fostering a positive and collaborative work environment at GHG? I think collaboration is a fundamental value for us to really achieve our goal. It is my priority to work closely with each team member within our properties to improve the areas of learning and development. As management, we have an open transparent communication on our targets and expectations, and the most important area will be recognising the individual contribution to the group by providing proper rewards and incentive.

GET BACK TO YOUR CORE

As we step into a new year, Pria Masson encourages us to think about the “why” behind our businesses and why “story telling” should not be our core focus.

I

was listening to a podcast where a business leader talks about the changing landscape of skill requirement. According to him, a few years ago, the greatest in-demand education was engineering. It was engineers who had ideas and the ability to convert those ideas into businesses. However, apparently now, the most in-demand services are those of “story tellers” i.e. creators of content and those with the ability to tell a story around the simplest products and sell directly to customers. While intuitively this could seem logical, it itched at something in my brain and made me think: “How can the biggest need of a businesses be a support function?” As we make all those many new year resolutions, I suggest getting back to basics. Let me explain. Imagine that you work with a bank. A bank has a lot of activities, but the core activity, is to lend money and earn an income on investments. If this bank, spends a lot of time deliberating policies and procedures, creating manuals and putting systems in place – does that change the core reason the bank exists? I ask because it makes you think; does it not? The systems, the policies they are all there to create order around the core work of the bank

34

January 2024

– the generation of money. Would it not seem very counter intuitive to say that the main work of a bank is the policies and procedures? It’s the same logic for creative and support functions. They exist to help a firm effectively market and sell core products. But far too many entrepreneurs seem to forget the core offering. The main reason as to why they started the company. There was always a core problem to be solved, a core experience to be delivered or a core need to be fulfilled. As you spend time “padding” the businesses, and selling your story, the core product is and always will be the hero. It needs to be. Marketing basics talk about the fact that you can get eyeballs on a product, you can generate initial interest with jingles, and stories and gimmicks – but a customer will stick around for the actual product. And this little basic idea is what can make or break a business. Every business needs a steady, predictable revenue stream. That comes from loyal and repeat customers. Why is this critical? Because fixed expenses need to be made, bills need to be paid, advances are due and often resources need to be planned. None of the above is possible accurately without some sort of steady

customer stream. And a beautiful story – that can only get you so far. So, as we start afresh in 2024, go back to your initial drawing board. Think about the “why” behind your business. Think if the reason still exists. If it does, strengthen that reason and ensure all the “frills” support it. If the reason has changed, follow a new procedure, but work to strengthen the new “why”. At the core, there is always a why. There needs to be. When we exercise, strengthening the core is imperative. Same goes for your business. Do not neglect your core just because the fancy moves are more attractive. Story telling is great if you’re an author – even then you do it to sell the books. A story, content and even a million likes is not the same thing as actual revenue. Make 2024 the year when you remember “it’s not all about money, but it’s definitely a lot about the money, honey.” Happy New Year. JOYS OF THE LEVANT Lebanese cuisine is a harmonious blend of flavours, colours and textures that takes diners on a culinary journey like no other. Recently, Bahrain This Month had the pleasure of indulging in an exquisite Lebanese dining experience at the Rayes Restaurant located in Coral Bay, Manama, that left our taste buds tingling with delight. From a tantalising array of mixed Lebanese starters to the main course boasting a diverse selection, and concluding with a tempting variety of desserts, the buffet was an adventure nothing short of extraordinary.

T

he culinary odyssey began with a delightful assortment of mixed Lebanese starters that set the stage for an unforgettable meal. The buffet featured classics like hummus, baba ganoush and falafel, each showcasing the authentic flavours and textures that Lebanese cuisine is celebrated for. The freshness of the ingredients was evident, with the hummus boasting a velvety smooth consistency and the falafel achieving the perfect balance of crispy exterior and tender interior. Adding an unexpected twist to the traditional Lebanese starters was a fusion with sushi, creating a unique and innovative combination that was both visually appealing and delicious. The sushi rolls were skilfully crafted, highlighting the artistry of Japanese cuisine. No exploration of Lebanese cuisine is complete without savouring the freshness of vine leaves. The grape leaves, stuffed with a fragrant mixture of rice, herbs and spices, offered a burst of flavours with each bite. The dish was a perfect embodiment of the Mediterranean ethos, where simplicity meets sophistication. The balance of acidity from the grape leaves and the earthiness of the stuffing created a palate-pleasing harmony that lingered on the taste buds. The main course unfolded as a grand feast, featuring a diverse selection of Lebanese culinary treasures. The roast beef with mashed potatoes was a carnivore’s delight, with the succulent beef complemented by the creamy goodness of perfectly mashed potatoes. The chicken cordon bleu, a classic French-inspired dish, was executed flawlessly, with the crispy exterior giving way to a flavourful combination of chicken, ham, and melted cheese. The mixed grill showcased the mastery of Lebanese grilling techniques, with a medley of meats offering a symphony of tastes and textures. Kibbeh bil laban, a dish featuring minced meat and cracked wheat in a yoghurt sauce, was a comforting revelation; a celebration of simplicity and sophistication on one plate. Bamia bil laham, a stew featuring tender okra and succulent lamb, transported diners to the heart of Lebanese home cooking. We ended the main course with the chicken maqlubeh, a layered dish of rice, vegetables and chicken, showcasing the intricate layering of flavours that is a hallmark of Lebanese culinary tradition. As the grand feast reached its sweet conclusion, the dessert options were nothing short of a sugary symphony. The Basbusa, a semolina cake soaked in rosewater or orange blossom syrup, was a delightful treat for those with a sweet tooth. The baklawa, with its layers of phyllo dough, nuts and honey, was a testament to the artistry of Lebanese pastry-making. Kunafa, a pastry made with thin noodlelike pastry soaked in syrup, added another layer of sweetness and texture to the dessert selection. And last but not the least, Um Ali, a traditional Arabic bread pudding, provided a comforting and indulgent conclusion to the meal. Every aspect of the dining experience was a testament to the richness and diversity of Lebanese culinary heritage. This gastronomic journey was a reminder that Lebanese cuisine is not merely a meal; it is a celebration of flavours, traditions and the joy of shared moments around a table. Scan to watch the video

BYBLOS

A WORLD OF LEBANESE DELIGHTS

Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay recently introduced a captivating gastronomy journey through its new restaurant, Byblos. Farah Baig visited this beautiful beachfront restaurant which charmed her with its idyllic setting and immersive dinner experience.

D

ining at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is an incomparable experience. They’re unique offerings, careful attention to detail, warm hospitality and inspired creativity guarantee you a memorable visit. Much to my delight, the hotel has launched a beachside Lebanese restaurant, Byblos. My first impression of the venue is that it provides the perfect setting for an evening of good food and conversation with loved ones. Inspired by the Mediterranean Sea and the ancient city in Lebanon, the restaurant is designed with soothing turquoise and white tones and offers indoor and outdoor seating. Flickering torches, warm lighting and ambient music create an atmosphere that is both captivating and inviting. During our visit, Oriental Specialty Chef Tony El Khoury briefed us on the menu which features a modern take on recipes from his hometown, Zahle. To begin our veritable feast we were served the Mixed Mezza Platter which featured seven Lebanese staples that served as a treat for the eyes and palate too. We dipped the warm, freshly-made pita bread into the delectable Hummus, Muttabal, Muhammara and Pumpkin Hummus which had the perfect balance of flavours and textures. Delicious Stuffed Vine Leaves and Tabbouleh brought us the familiar, tangy flavours of Lebanon that we have grown to love.

Shawarma Manakeesh delighted us. I truly enjoyed the Kibbeh, a Lebanese staple that perfectly combines spiced minced beef with pine nuts. This was followed by Chef Tony’s Shrimp Freekeh which was flavoured with pesto – a creative twist.

were served a delightful Kunafa garnished with crushed pistachios and ice cream. We enjoyed the delicious cheese, and buttery flavour of this Kunafa – a sweet finish to this feast. Byblos is open daily from sunset to midnight, and is closed on Mondays. Needless to say, I’ll soon be back at this tranquil retreat.

We were quite satiated but Byblos’ main courses beckoned us further into its world of Lebanese delights. We enjoyed the Shish Tawook, a crowd pleaser that was just divine with its toum (garlic sauce). We were mesmerised by the reinvented Lamb Shank Ouzi which was slow cooked and finished in a blanket of puff pastry. Chef Tony himself expertly presented the dish, demonstrating the tenderness of the meat which effortlessly falls off the bone. From the flavourful rice to the crunch Scan to watch the video of the roasted nuts, the tenderness of the meat and the silky gravy, this Ouzi was absolutely divine. Finally, presented with mesemerising theatrics, we

Lebanese food is known for its use of fresh ingredients, with the best of vegetables and herbs taking centre stage. So we were delighted to savour the Shankleesh Salad – a delightful mix of cheese, finely diced vegetables and a generous drizzle of rich olive oil. Next was the Beetroot Carpaccio Salad which harmonised the flavours of beetroot, feta cheese, walnuts and crisp lettuce. After tucking into its range of cold mezzes and salads we were ready for some hot appetisers. Spinach Fatayer, Kibbeh, Cheese Springrolls and a modern Chicken

GEARING UP FOR 2024

Motoring never stops evolving, and after another momentous year for the industry and an even greater gear shift towards an electric future, 2024 promises to drive vehicular technology further forward. Kristian Harrison looks at the potential innovations set to drive the automotive landscape this year.

As we launch into 2024, the future of automobiles is full of exciting promises. Here are my predictions on the top trends we’ll see this year.

Sustainability

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs)

Design

Self-driving or autonomous vehicles have been the talk of the town since the idea surfaced. They can eliminate or minimise the need for human intervention and can transform everyday transportation by reducing downtime, increasing fuel efficiency and improving safety. For example, if a driver is showing signs of fatigue or neglect, there is a higher risk of causing an accident. Advanced recognition technologies, like AI-enhanced computer vision, can help avoid these mishaps. Whether selfdriving would work on Bahrain’s roads where the driving can be, let’s say… somewhat unpredictable, remains to be seen.

One of the prominent trends is the search for more aerodynamic designs, where energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions take centre stage. Electric and hybrid cars are leading the way, incorporating lightweight structures and intelligent designs to maximise autonomy. Whether these predictions to actually come true or not remains to be seen, but remember to keep an eye on Bahrain This Month throughout the year for the latest motoring news, exciting test drive experiences and honest reviews.

Rise in Digital Automobile Sales

In parts of North America and Europe, automobile manufacturers have helped customers skip an in-person visit to the dealership and facilitated an online pick or purchase. With a computer or smartphone, buyers can shop at their convenience, explore, and select the features they want on a car and select their financing options to pay for the car.

Bahrainthismonth.com

Sustainability reflects the growing global environmental concern. Car manufacturers are committed to sustainable manufacturing practices, and 2024 promises more initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint. Eco-friendly cars, such as hybrids and hydrogen-powered cars, are becoming the norm, and subscription-based services offer consumers flexible ownership options, aligning with a more conscious lifestyle.

Connectivity

Connected cars use wireless technology to offer a multimedia experience in the comfort of your car. By using on-demand features, you can explore anything on the web while sitting in your vehicle. This year, expect to see more models able to connect and exchange data with other vehicles (V2V), an electric vehicle grid (V2G), public infrastructure (V2I), as well as with new and emerging ways to utilise vehicle data (V2X).

THE UPPER ECHELON OF ELECTRIC MOTORING The Audi e-tron GT represents the pinnacle of progress for the iconic German brand. Kristian Harrison finds out why there’s never been a better time to put the brakes on internal combustion and go electric.

A

s a proud Audi owner myself, I was excited to be given the opportunity to test my trusty 2008 TT’s younger cousin. Curiously, it was the first motor from the marque other than my own that I’d driven in many years, so it was interesting to compare 15 years of technological advancement. Settling into the spacious cockpit, the instant dose of familiarity hit me. Of course, there are a few more bells and whistles these days, not least of all the 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system in place of the CD player (ask your parents, kids), but everything was still where I expected it to be. Too often, I find that the latest cars, especially those of upmarket competitors, try too hard to be futuristic and feature knobs, dials and touch panels that would be more at home in the Millennium Falcon than a car on Earth. What I particularly loved about the e-tron GT was just how intuitive it felt. From the simple setup on the steering wheel which would ensure I’d spend more time with eyes on the road and not the digital instrument cluster, to the satisfying click of the air conditioning switches, to the cruise control toggle which is usually the bane of my existence in unfamiliar cars but to my pleasant surprise had stayed exactly the same, to the touchscreen which was super-easy to navigate without endless menu-digging, it’s clear that the e-tron GT has been superbly designed with driver and not fashion at the forefront of thinking. Of course, many cars look nice and feel comfortable, but it all boils down to the main question: what is it like to drive? And oh boy, is this a beauty. I challenge anybody still reluctant to buy into the concept of electric automobiles to spend even an hour with the e-tron GT and still stubbornly cling to their nostalgic love for roaring engines and CO2 emissions. 530 brake horsepower. 0 to 100kmph in 4.1

Bahrainthismonth.com

seconds. Instant maximum torque. The specs of the latest V12 hypercar, you ask? Nope, it’s the Audi e-tron GT breaking down the last boundaries of myth around what an electric motor (or two of them, as it turns out) can do, and blowing your socks off with a hard-hitting reality. I can’t put into print what my colleague shouted as I found a long stretch of quiet road, flicked the car into maximumperformance ‘Dynamic’ mode and put the pedal to the floor, but it was something similar to ‘Wow!’ as the G-forces you’d expect from an accelerating roller coaster threw us back in our seats. Speaking of busting myths, the 93KWh, 36-module battery has a maximum range of 488kms, which I’d wager not many people in the Kingdom cover in a week. Far from needing to stop to recharge ‘every half an hour’, you’d likely never have to worry about it, especially with an installed home charger. Feature-wise, the e-tron GT has all the gadgets you’d expect in 2024, from myriad driver-assistance technologies, including a fully 3D camera for parking assistance, to wireless charging, full navigation and a health and safety inspector’s dream of accident-avoidance features.

For one final grin-inducing flourish, as I drove back into the Audi Centre Bahrain and turned the engine off for the final time, I was hit with the famous Audi ‘badum-badum’ heartbeat as the car said goodbye in its own way. ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ indeed. The new Audi e-tron GT is available now at the Behbehani Brothers Audi Centre Bahrain. For more information, call 17 459-933.

Scan to watch the video

Wrap all of this inside a sleek, aerodynamic body with your choice of glass or carbon fibre roof (if you want something a little lighter) and an automatic spoiler, then you have yourself an absolute gem. When it comes to finally saying goodbye to my beloved baby, I know where I’ll be looking next.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 N NAMED CAR OF THE YEAR Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 N electric hyper hatch has made a storming start to life by being crowned Car of the Year at the 2023 TopGear.com Awards. The IONIQ 5 N was revealed earlier this year at July’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it received universal acclaim as a pioneering technological blueprint for the Hyundai N division’s EV future. The high-performance model combines the Electrified-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) of the standard IONIQ 5 – the 2022 World Car of the Year – with N’s motorsport-bred technologies and expertise. This unswerving focus on delivering maximum excitement behind the wheel persuaded TopGear’s expert team of judges to name the car the best of 2023. Among the IONIQ 5 N’s array of key technical advances that won over the judges is a powertrain which delivers greater power output and enhanced performance in battery cooling and braking. The IONIQ 5 N’s electric motors spin up to 21,000 RPM, providing up to 609 PS in normal conditions, or 650 PS when the car’s N Grin Boost (NGB) feature is engaged, maximising acceleration for up to 10 seconds; 0-62mph is achievable in 3.4 seconds, while a top speed of 161mph is attainable on tracks. The IONIQ 5 N’s success marks the second time in three years that a Hyundai N car has taken the Top Gear Car of the Year honour, following the i20 N in 2021.

THE NEW MCLAREN GTS McLaren has revealed the new GTS, which joins the McLaren line-up as a replacement for the GT. At just 1,520kg (DIN) the GTS is the lightest car in its class and has a segment best power-to-weight ratio of 418PS per-tonne. The power of the V8 M840TE 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged engine has been elevated to 635PS at 7,500rpm, the additional 15PS coming from increased crankshaft torque enabled by more aggressive combustion phasing and revised ignition timing. A launch-control function is standard; when enabled, the GTS hits 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in only 3.2 seconds and 0-200km/h (0-124mph) in just 8.9 seconds. The maximum speed of the GTS is 326km/h (203mph). The GTS also has a seven-speed SSG transmission that provides smooth, seamless and rapid shifts in default-from-start-up Comfort mode, ensuring relaxing yet brisk acceleration. Retaining the core McLaren attractions of beautiful yet functional design, class-leading power-toweight ratio – enabled by lightweight carbon fibre construction centred on a unique monocoque chassis – and unmatched driving dynamics, the new GTS is also visually even more powerful and offers increased choice of exterior and interior specification. An accomplished and functional approach to a lightweight McLaren supercar, the new GTS takes its place in a McLaren line-up that will continue evolving in 2024 and beyond.

KIA EV9 SHORTLISTED FOR 2024 CAR OF THE YEAR The Kia EV9 has been shortlisted for the final round of the 2024 Car of the Year (COTY) in Europe award. The all-electric SUV was provisionally listed among 28 new models launched this year and has now been selected by the 59 COTY jurors from 22 countries for the seven-strong shortlist. Like the multiple award-winning electric crossover, the Kia EV6, the allelectric Kia EV9 is based on the dedicated E-GMP platform. One of the first seven-seater electric vehicles on the market, the EV9 offers a spacious interior with lounge-like comfort. In terms of range, the EV9 is the perfect companion for family trips, as it can cover up to 563km on one battery charge. Due to its 800V technology, the 99.8-kWh battery receives 249km of battery range in 15 minutes, offering exceptional efficiency for its class. The overall COTY winner will be announced on February 26 at the Geneva International Motor Show.

Tina Turner

Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll Delivered months after her May 2023 death, Queen of Rock ‘N’ Roll is the first comprehensive solo retrospective assembled on Tina Turner in many years. This box set follows a chronological order, opening with a trippy reading of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Whole Lotta Love’ – popularised in Disney’s Cruella – then swiftly running through several late-’70s tracks that didn’t often appear on collections before the comp reaches her great comeback of 1984. This, of all Turner compilations, paints a portrait of the entire arc of Tina’s solo career. Her rawest, nerviest, and funkiest material is missing, but this depicts her comeback and reign in vivid detail.

2 Chainz / Lil Wayne

Peter Gabriel I/O

Verdict:

An excellent return for the prog rock icon.

What’s the story? I/O is the 10th studio album by English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It is Gabriel’s first album of new original material in over 21 years, marking the longest gap between two studio albums in his solo career. I/O features 12 tracks, each with two different mixes labelled the ‘Bright-Side Mix’ and ‘Dark-Side Mix.’ I/O is also Gabriel’s longest studio album, with both mixes each clocking in at over 68 minutes and the total project lasting over two hours. Beginning in January 2023, Gabriel released a new single every full moon, with its alternate mix released on the following new moon, eventually culminating in the album’s release at the end of the year.

Worth a listen? Gabriel took his time crafting I/O, so listening to it slowly and steadily lets the record unfold and lets the distance between the decades narrow. The album marks an emotional progression, finding Gabriel curiously optimistic as he searches for new beginnings, discovering glimmers of hope within the darkness. Some of these songs surge, some simmer, but they all return to an idea essayed on the title track: “stuff coming out, stuff going in/I’m just a part of everything,” a worldview that’s intimate and all-encompassing. What makes I/O unique, even special, is that the process of searching isn’t central to the finished product. There’s no restlessness here, only acceptance, a quality that gives I/O a quiet power that can’t help but build over time.

Welcome 2 Collegrove Reprising the collaboration they began on 2016’s Collegrove, Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz lock into some moments of incredible chemistry on Welcome 2 Collegrove. Narrative skits and quick shifts in production styles give the album a mixtape feel, but what really makes the project exciting is the energy both rappers exude when playing off of each other. This can take many forms, like the contrast between 2 Chainz’s patient couplets and Wayne’s rapid-fire verse on the slow-burning ‘Presha’; passionate performances over glistening slow-motion soul on ‘Oprah & Gayle’ and disorienting robo-funk and over-the-top vulgarity on ‘Crazy Thick.’

Dolly Parton

Rockstar Upon receiving a nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Dolly Parton accepted the honour, deciding to deliver her first full-fledged rock album in return. Hence, Rockstar – a star-studded double album where Dolly attempts every sound under the rock & roll sun. Parton splits her time covering (very) familiar classic rock tunes and writing made-to-order originals, only occasionally shutting the studio door so she can sing on her own. The combination of overblown renditions of songs you know by heart and cuts that feel as if they were tailored for album rock radio in 1990 does have some charms, especially because Dolly embraces the goofiness of the entire project.

BOOK REVIEW India’s Moment Dr Mohan Kumar The former Indian Ambassador to Bahrain, Dr. Mohan Kumar, who served in the Kingdom from 2010-2015, is one of the most respected diplomats of recent times. Last month, he released his second book, India’s Moment, at St. James Court London Taj Hotel on November 23. Now Dean at O.P. Jindal University, we take a look at Dr. Kumar’s latest work. The idea of how India negotiates with the world is at the heart of this book. Dr. Kumar, a career diplomat, represented India at multiple international fora over a career spanning three and a half decades. During this time, he would invariably be told that Indian negotiators were among the best in the business. And yet, several of his interlocutors would ask, in the same breath, why India was such a tough customer when it came to multilateral negotiations. Indeed, it was hard to escape the view, held even by India’s friends, that the country was somehow more of a naysayer than a partner in key international parleys. This book is a sincere attempt to set the record straight. At one level, India is not very different from other countries insomuch as it seeks to protect where necessary, and advance where possible, its national interest. There are several unique aspects about India and the way it approaches multilateral negotiations with the

62

January 2024

world. This book dwells on some of those fundamental factors and traces how India’s positions have evolved over time. A central contention of this book is that India has moved, slowly but surely, from being an alleged naysayer to becoming a putative partner for the world in key multilateral negotiations. More broadly, this reflects India’s growing political, economic and strategic clout in the world today. It is only when this transformation is fuller and more substantial that India will be able to fulfil its manifest destiny of becoming a leading power, capable of shaping global rules.

The chief guest at the book launch was Indian High Commissioner to UK, HE Vikram Doraiswami, the guest of Honour was Lord Kamlesh Patel from Bradford. Get the Dress-thetic

There’s a dress for every occasion, and an occasion for every dress. Farah Baig shares some of the latest trends when it comes to dresses and her favourite pieces from the Rasario Resort 2024 collection and Genny Pre-Fall 2024-2025 collection. Let’s face it — glamourous dresses will just never go out of fashion as there is something so divinely feminine about a beautiful dress. With brands taking on a renewed, creative approach through 2023, we’ve seen phenomenal dresses on runways and in ready-to-wear collections that are just hard to resist. Perfecting your dress-thetic would need having a keen eye for detail, and taking advantage of some of the fantastic trends we’ve seen in 2023 that are sure to make their way into this year too. Sultry dresses with side slits have made a big comeback and work well in all lengths, with floor-length dresses just exuding elegance. Large 3D details including roses, meticulously sewn out of fabric, have been adorning dresses while additional details such as bows, laced-up backs and frills have been taking designs up a notch. While form-fitting silhouettes aren’t going anywhere, we’ve seen a growing affinity towards relaxed fit dresses. Structured, tailored dresses with collars have been back for every occasion. Whichever you choose, we’re sure you’ll look stunning!

Cosmopolitan Chic with Genny Genny’s Pre-Fall 2024-2025 collection is inspired by the essence of the modern, cosmopolitan woman navigating the dynamic facets of her urban life. The collection is chic, and can take women from business meetings to art galleries, theatres, and events with ease. The collection has several noteworthy outwear pieces, but what caught our eye were the dresses which radiated towards glamour and femininity. The collection boasts a rich array of luxurious materials, including worked cloths, buttoned wools, technical and structured cady, wool gauzes, lurex pinstripes, jersey with rhinestones, jacquard tweeds, sequined denim, silks, crepe de chine, laminated chiffons, and iridescent velvets. While the colour palette features several shades of grey, we were drawn to the light lavender and avibrant lacquer red. Genny’s Pre-Fall 2024-2025 collection masterfully captures the spirit of the modern, dynamic woman making her mark in the bustling metropolis.

Rasario’s Roses Since 2012, Rasario has been creating spectacular evening wear, cocktail dresses and ready-to-wear pieces. The same can be said for their Resort 2024 collection which is sure to turn some heads. It seamlessly merges Asian and Gothic influences with a nostalgic nod to the ‘90s and 2000s. It’s a celebration of the semi-dramatic, featuring sultry Gothic undertones inspired by drapery and the symbolic beauty of roses. Redefining fashion with transformative silhouettes, Resort’24 showcases voluminous roses, intriguing cutouts, and understated teardrop necklines, offering styles from mini to maxi. The iconic corset silhouette takes centre stage, gently flaring into elegant trains. Sleek column dresses, ruffles, asymmetry, and abundant drapery, accentuated by corset inserts, provide a diverse array of styles.

The Art of Storytelling

Talented multimedia artist and photographer, Mashael Alsaie, recently represented her native Bahrain at the Noor Riyadh festival, which with more than 120 largescale light art installations from over 100 artists, is the largest of its type in the world. Farah Baig spoke to her about her love of the arts, her creative process and mythological inspirations behind her work.

orn from a curiosity about how we perceive and relate to the world, Ms. Alsaie’s intrigue developed into ways of capturing the world around her. To this day, she is an eternal student, exploring new materials, mediums and ways of making things. However, it was the subject of Bahraini mythology which really ensnared her imagination and put her on her path to international recognition. “My practice expresses a research-driven interpretation of Bahraini mythologies via text, image and glass,” she explains. “Incorporating themes of science fiction and ecofeminism, my most recent work explores water mythologies and, in particular, the myth of the Adhari Spring. My initial curiosity about Adhari drew from a childlike affinity towards storytelling, mythologies and particularly those that considered the land.” Ms. Alsaie’s Sea of Tears (2023) is a newly commissioned multimedia installation at the Noor Riyadh festival in Saudi Arabia that investigates the folklore of Ain Adhari, a desolate natural spring in Bahrain. “The process of creating my latest installation is founded primarily on research and writing. I began the work documenting the site of the Adhari Spring, then imagined sites of the spring in my series False Pools. Once I started exploring multimedia work, particularly the poetic materiality of glass, I could fully form my questions about the mythology of Adhari.” The installation uses glass sculptures and two-channel video to investigate the folklore of Ain Adhari, a desolate natural spring in Bahrain, through the lens of mythology, ecofeminism and oral histories. “The Myth of the Maiden of Adhari recalls the plight of a young maiden who is menacingly approached by a strange man in a palm tree grove and consequently wails in fear until her gushing

66

January 2024

tears are metamorphosed into an eternal, mythical spring,” she explains. “Although dried out since the 1980s, Ain Adhari remains imprinted in the collective memory of those who witnessed it at its most fertile. Sea of Tears reimagines the metaphysical transformation of Adhari from the virgin’s physical body into a body of water as a three-part narrative composed of sculptural glass tears and video and audio. Both elemental and poetic, the installation calls into question multiple parallels of transformation and attitudes towards land and resources.” Ms. Alsaie’s art career has gone from strength-to-strength, having been featured at exhibitions including Misk Riyadh, Warehouse421 and KBHG Basel in recent years. However, the opportunity to showcase her work at the world’s largest light art festival was an especially proud moment. “It was great to be in conversation with other artists, both spatially within the exhibition and also on the ground during panels and activations,” she believes. “Festivals of this kind are important to highlight talent in the region and it’s a unique opportunity to come together to consider other practices and ways of making. I was working on this project for more than four years, so to see it come to fruition was truly wonderful.” “One particularly poignant moment was when my grandmother visited the exhibition. It was one of the biggest highlights of my artistic life. Having recorded some narrative voiceovers for the project, she heard her voice in the overhead speakers, and sharing this with her brought me so much joy,” she concludes. To check out more of Ms. Alsaie’s amazing work, visit her Instagram @mashael.alsaie

Steering Clear of

opinion

Digital Dangers An alarming two-thirds of parents say parenting is harder today than 20 years ago, citing the impact of social media and smartphones. Ouiam El Hassani shares her tips for starting a conversation about technology with kids.

A

s we’re rearing a new generation that will grow up almost entirely online, parents are met with a fresh set of challenges as kids interact with screens at school, play and home. Many don’t even know where to begin when it comes to creating safer online and digital experiences for their kids. It’s time we rethink how we talk to our kids about technology—and recognise that it’s not just one conversation we need to have, but an ongoing, open dialogue about how kids can protect themselves online. Setting parental controls on your kids’ favourite apps can be helpful, but having an open dialogue about technology’s role in their daily lives will take them much farther. Here’s your guide to getting the conversation started:

1. Keep it light and engaging. Start by choosing a topic that will interest and engage your kid. If you are concerned with how much time they spend online, realise that it may be more important to understand precisely how and why your kid spends that time online. Kids are first introduced to the internet through videos (as well as streaming TV/ music, games) or through school, and primarily through mobile devices and apps to start. Many apps are designed with algorithms and strategic gamification to suck us all in, and kids are no exception. Pick a device that resonates with your kid and start by using simple language to explore how your kid feels about it and explain its risks and benefits. Learning about the online platforms your kid uses and using them yourself can go a long way in instilling trust and communication with your family. Humour can be a great way to keep this dialogue positive so the conversation feels less daunting and your kid remains engaged. You can do this by acting out specific scenarios or using humorous examples to illustrate the importance of online safety.

70

January 2024

2. Make it age-appropriate. It’s essential to consider your kid’s age and developmental level, as younger kids may need simpler explanations, while older ones can grasp more complex ideas. For example, parental controls may differ for various ages. It’s tempting to depend on parental controls to help limit your kid’s online time or block certain websites and online activities, but the truth is that no tool can ever completely protect them online. Instead, it’s more important to become comfortable talking with your kids about online safety, shared family rules—and most importantly—why those rules exist. As kids learn how to manage themselves online, figure out a plan to reward them by easing some restrictions. If your kids are using social media, talk to them about how using social media makes them feel. Nobody feels great after being stuck in the “doom-scroll” for too long. Bringing this fact to light can help them recognise the impacts. It is also important to discuss what type of information is safe to share online. A practical way to protect kids’ privacy is by turning off location services for apps or changing the settings to ‘only operational while using.’ This prevents apps from gathering data on the places you visit. Lastly, make sure you are checking privacy and security settings on other devices, not just phones. Do your kids have a schoolissued device? Take the time to look into those settings too and don’t be afraid to ask teachers and school administrators how the tools and software used in classrooms handle students’ data.

Womanthismonth.com

opinion

4. Model good digital behaviour.

3. Keep it ongoing. The internet can be a great place for families, but teaching your family how to enjoy the wonders of the web safely requires a degree of consistency in practicing agreed-upon safety measures and developing protective habits. Being vigilant in setting regular “tech talks” is one of the most effective ways to protect your family from online risks while creating space for your family to discover the world, connect with others and have fun online together.

You’ll want to lead by example so your kids know the behaviour they should emulate when engaging with technology. Consider instituting ‘charging breaks’ or curfews for devices for the family and discuss turning off notifications that prompt you to re-engage online. Screen time often gets a bad rap, but as we embrace a more online society, it’s helpful to re-evaluate the role of the internet in all of our lives. Implementing device breaks when the whole family should be present will empower your kids to model this behaviour. It’s also important to grow your own knowledge about engaging safely online. All connected devices are potentially vulnerable and it’s essential to understand the potential risks before bringing new connected devices into your home. Doing this research will model to your kids how to be responsible and informed technology users.
