Celebrating Diplomatic and Commercial Relations between the USA and Bahrain on July 4, 2024
DIPLOMATIC TIES THAT THRIVE
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, US Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Steven C. Bondy, discusses the dynamic relationship between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Bahrain and reviews the progress and future aspirations of this longstanding partnership of shared stability and prosperity.
Your Excellency, how would you describe the current state of US relations with Bahrain?
Relations are thriving and moving from strength to strength. The last 12 months have included important milestones in our bilateral relations, notably the signing of the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA) by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa in September of 2023. This agreement significantly upgrades our strategic relationship, formalising our cooperation to deter conflict, enhance regional stability and increase cooperation in technology, trade and investment.
I am proud of the growing people-to-people ties between Americans and Bahrainis.
I enjoyed sharing American hip-hop and breakdancing during the Spring of Culture festival and meeting many Bahraini leaders who participated in US Embassy exchange programmes. In healthcare, education, law enforcement and filmmaking, Americans and Bahrainis work side-by-side, sharing best practices and ensuring our partnerships and friendships will flourish in the years to come.
What are the key areas of cooperation between the two nations?
C-SIPA enhances our cooperation in three primary areas. First, it expands our security and defense collaboration to bolster regional stability and prosperity. Second, it
strengthens our commercial relationship, focusing on trade and investment opportunities in areas like supply chain resilience and infrastructure. Third, it expands our cooperation in science, advanced technology, artificial intelligence and information and communications technology How is the United States supporting Bahrain’s Vision 2030 economic diversification plan?
United States-Bahrain trade and investment are at near-historic levels. Our governments recognise that emerging technology will shape the future. Many American companies are interested in working in Bahrain to pursue regional opportunities and benefit from our close bilateral partnership. We facilitate the
exchange of innovative ideas, information and skills between our societies. From FinTech to artificial intelligence, connectivity and data centres, this innovation will reshape industries, forming more sustainable, competitive and fair economies.
Can you discuss any recent joint military exercises, security achievements or partnerships between the two countries?
As the host nation for US Naval Forces Central Command, the US Navy 5th Fleet and the Combined Maritime Forces, Bahrain is a key contributor to United States and coalition security efforts. Bahrain participates in numerous regional security initiatives, including Operation Prosperity Guardian, defending commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Bahrain’s security partnership with the United States extends beyond the region, as demonstrated by our long involvement in the F-16 fighter jet programme. Bahrain is the first to fly the advanced F-16 Block 70 jets, receiving the first three earlier this year.
How do you see Bahrain’s role in the broader context of Gulf and Middle Eastern geopolitics?
During this challenging period, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has visited Bahrain three times, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visited once. Their meetings with Bahrain’s leadership have yielded insights and actions the United States has pursued, and we are grateful for our trusting partnership with Bahrain. The Kingdom’s successful hosting of the 33rd Arab Summit showcased its regional leadership and good relations. Both our countries are focused on implementing a ceasefire, releasing hostages and providing more humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Long-term, we aim for Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace and prosperity through the establishment of an independent Palestine.
What are the current trade figures between the two nations? What measures are being taken to enhance bilateral trade and investment?
This year marks 20 years since the United States and Bahrain signed our bilateral Free Trade Agreement and 18 years since it came into force. Since then, two-way trade has nearly quadrupled from USD782 million in 2005 to more than USD3 billion in 2018. In 2022 and 2023, the bilateral trade volume was USD2.85 billion, with trade in services adding about USD1 billion annually. Partnerships between US companies and Bahrain’s public and private sectors have resulted in projects that underpin Bahrain’s economy. The US Embassy’s commercial team and the American Chamber of Commerce of Bahrain help facilitate relationships and trade opportunities.
What are the main challenges facing US businesses looking to invest in Bahrain?
One primary challenge is gaining familiarity with Bahrain’s business landscape and understanding the unique opportunities. As regional economic integration expands, American investors can leverage Bahrain’s strategic location and supportive business environment. We are always ready to assist American companies looking to invest and do business in Bahrain.
What initiatives are in place to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and Bahrain?
People-to-people ties are at the heart of our relationship with Bahrain. More than 130 years ago, Americans extended friendship through healthcare, establishing a school, hospital and church that continue to operate. This dedication has expanded through robust exchanges of students, artists, journalists, youth leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals. The US Embassy offers university scholarships, entrepreneurship training and cultural programmes and Bahrainis are encouraged to follow us on social media for the latest on these initiatives.
Do you have any figures on the number of Bahrainis and Bahrain residents who travelled to the United States from Bahrain in 2023? What measures are being taken to enhance this figure and promote tourism?
Last year, the US Embassy in Manama conducted almost 15,000 visa interviews. Bahrainis receive 10-year visitor visas for tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends and family. Many can renew visas
by mail, avoiding in-person interviews, and those needing interviews have the shortest wait times in the Gulf. In 2022, Bahrain became the first regional country to join the ‘Global Entry’ programme, allowing expedited entry to the United States. How is the embassy working to support American citizens residing or traveling in Bahrain?
We support American citizens during significant moments, such as births, adoptions, crises and emergencies. We process passport applications, notarise documents and issue Consular Reports of Birth Abroad. We assist American families relocating to the United States by processing immigrant visas. For Americans visiting Bahrain, our website offers up-to-date information on visa and entry requirements, safety and contact details. This year, our consular section is also helping US citizens vote in the elections by accepting and mailing absentee ballots.
Is there anything you would like to comment on further?
This is the sixth time I am celebrating American Independence Day on July 4 in Bahrain, over two separate diplomatic tours. It is a privilege to represent the US government and people here and work alongside Bahraini friends, allies and partners. Happy Independence Day!

A MASTER OF MARITIME SECURITY
Vice Admiral George
M. Wikoff serves as the commander of the United States Naval Forces Central Command, United States Fifth Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces.
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month as part of its USA in Bahrain supplement, Vice Adm. Wikoff shared his insights on the current strategic profile of the US Navy in the region, the challenges faced in maintaining maritime security and the crucial collaborations with Bahrain and other international navies.
What are the current strategic profiles for the US Naval Forces Central Command?
I fall under Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti for my role as 5th Fleet commander. Her priorities, which are to preserve peace, respond to crises and win decisively in combat, align with our global priorities. We execute through three lines of effort: warfighters (the people), warfighting (how we do our mission) and our foundation (facilities and support mechanisms).
In my NAVCENT role under General Erik Kurilla, the CENTCOM commander, my task is to preserve maritime security through operations, training and partnerships. We focus on maintaining maritime regional
security and contributing meaningfully to it.
How do you assess the current maritime security environment?
It is challenged and threatened. In the Arabian Gulf, we face threats to shipping and ship seizures in the Straits of Hormuz, such as the recent seizure of the motor vessel
Aries in international waters. In the Indian Ocean and Northern Arabian Sea, piracy has increased but not to the levels seen in 2010-2012. Maritime terrorism is a concern in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden too, as seen with the recent attack on the Motor Vessel Tutor.
Can you elaborate on the key collaborations and partnerships with Bahrain and international navies in particular when it comes to maritime security?
Bahrain has been a tremendous partner, supporting our mission for many decades. The long-term partnership between our Navy and the Royal Bahrain Naval Force is strong and enduring. Bahrain also hosts the Combined Maritime Forces, a 44-nation coalition committed to the International RulesBased Order, showing leadership in maritime security.
How is the integration of new technologies and AI systems transforming your operations?
It’s the future, and it’s arriving quickly. Task Force 59 leads the integration of unmanned and AI technology into maritime operations. We identify operational problems, seek solutions from industry, evaluate them, and if they meet our needs, operationalise them. This multinational task force increases our maritime domain awareness and decision-making efficiency. We also continuously evaluate our cyber hygiene and conduct awareness training to ensure our teams are vigilant against cyber threats.
What do you consider to be the most significant challenges you face in maintaining maritime security, and how are they being addressed?
The three main challenges are instability in the Arabian Gulf, trafficking of illicit materials and piracy. In my capacity as Commander of Combined Maritime Forces, we have three task forces that address these challenges: Task Force 150, led by Canada, focuses on countering illicit trafficking. Task Force 151, led by Brazil, addresses piracy. Task Force 153, led by Italy, ensures maritime security in the Red Sea through Operation Prosperity Guardian, providing assurance and information sharing to the maritime industry.
How do you maintain operational readiness and training for the fleet in such a strategically critical region?
We receive tremendous support from the US Navy in terms of material readiness and training. In Bahrain, we have several training facilities for various operational needs, including boarding procedures and damage control. We also conduct bilateral and multilateral exercises with other navies. Feedback from these exercises helps improve preparatory training for incoming ships.
Are there any specific initiatives in place to ensure that naval operations in Bahrain are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner?
We respect the sea and take measures to minimise environmental impact. We use containment booms and strict guidelines to prevent leaks and spills. We also conduct exercises to respond quickly to any incidents. Additionally, we are moving towards renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint.
What do you see as the future direction of US Naval Forces Central Command over the next five to 10 years in terms of strategic focus and operational capabilities?
I walk to work every day on broken crystal balls of previous NAVCENT commanders, and I hear the glass crushing under my feet for all the projections of how the environment will be in the future! While the future is uncertain, our commitment to the region remains resolute. We will continue to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security, responding to crises as needed. The United States is deeply committed to the Kingdom of Bahrain and regional security.
Have you any plans to assess the effectiveness of the mental health stand down that was held last year and expand health treatment options to improve wellbeing?
Mental health resources for sailors and their families have expanded significantly in the past decade. We recently held a summit with local and navy mental health professionals to exchange best practices and improve awareness. Reducing the stigma around mental health is a key objective, and we see positive developments from last year’s initiatives. On a more personal basis, you’re here with your family. What are your favourite recreational pursuits when you find the time?
I wish I had a little more time! My wife and I are back in Bahrain after being here from 2015 to 2017. When we left, we never thought we’d get the opportunity to return and we were sad when we left as we looked back with great fondness at our time here, most especially the people we met. Coming back here has been an absolute honour, a terrific experience for us and something that we don’t take for granted. We really appreciate the opportunity to come back to the Kingdom. I have three adult sons that are back in the US, although my youngest son actually was in the Bahrain School last time we were here.
This time around, the job is a little busier to say the least! But it is great to be back and I look forward to when I have time to work on lowering my handicap on the golf course.
FOSTERING TRADE RELATIONS
The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) serves as a crucial bridge between American and Bahraini businesses, providing a platform for dialogue, collaboration and networking. AmCham Bahrain President, Qays H. Zu’bi, spoke to Bahrain This Month to offer his deep insights into this relationship and AmCham’s role in promoting bilateral trade and investment.
“The trade relationship between the United States and Bahrain has seen significant evolution over the years, transitioning from a focus on oil and defence cooperation to a more diverse array of economic interactions,” Mr. Zu’bi states. “This transformation has been marked by the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations, which came into effect in 2006. This agreement has been pivotal in enhancing bilateral trade and investment, eliminating tariffs on a vast array of goods and services, while fostering competitiveness in both American and Bahraini businesses.”
By organising trade missions, business forums and networking events, AmCham Bahrain brings together key stakeholders from both nations, thereby creating an environment conducive to investment and growth.
The sectors offering the most promising opportunities for US businesses in Bahrain are diverse and expanding. Mr. Zu’bi highlights the financial services sector, bolstered by Bahrain’s status as a regional financial hub, and the rapidly growing ICT sector, driven by Bahrain’s heavy investment in digital transformation and innovation. The healthcare sector also presents significant potential due to the growing demand for advanced medical services and technologies. Additionally, sectors such as renewable energy, education and tourism are becoming increasingly attractive for US businesses, supported by Bahrain’s strategic location, business-friendly environment and forwardlooking economic policies.
Navigating the Bahraini market can pose challenges for American businesses, but AmCham Bahrain offers a comprehensive suite of services to support market entry and growth. “We provide market intelligence, regulatory and compliance guidance, and facilitate connections with key stakeholders,” Mr. Zu’bi explains. “These services help American companies understand the local business landscape, navigate local laws and regulations, and connect with potential partners, clients and government officials.”
One of the significant impacts of the FTA has been the substantial boost in bilateral trade. US exports to Bahrain and Bahraini exports to the US have increased significantly, facilitated by the elimination of tariffs on a wide range of goods and services. “The FTA has strengthened economic cooperation, paving the way for joint ventures and collaborative projects in various sectors,” Mr. Zu’bi observes. This agreement has also encouraged investment, with many American companies establishing operations in Bahrain and vice versa.
AmCham Bahrain actively engages in initiatives to enhance
economic ties between the US and Bahrain to foster a collaborative and supportive business environment. These include organising trade missions to the United States, promoting collaboration in sectors like ICT and renewable energy and strengthening ties with key stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations and educational institutions.
Networking and collaboration are at the heart of AmCham Bahrain’s mission. “We organise a wide range of events, including business luncheons, industry forums and social gatherings, providing members with ample opportunities to connect and collaborate,” Mr. Zu’bi says. “The chamber also facilitates sector-specific working groups, enabling members to share insights and best practices and offers online platforms for continuous interaction and collaboration.”
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Zu’bi advises thorough research of the local market and identification of high-growth sectors.
“Leveraging the support services offered by institutions like AmCham Bahrain can be invaluable,” he emphasises. “Building strong local partnerships and understanding cultural nuances are also critical to success.”
SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE
Dr. Susan E. Saxton, the interim President and CEO at the Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington, DC, brings a wealth of experience from both the business and educational sectors. She talks to Kristian Harrison about her career journey from being the founding President of the American University of Bahrain (AUBH) to her current role at MEI and her roles in fostering growth and innovation.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. Saxton notes, “I began my business career in tax with Arthur Young and after the merger with Ernst & Young, I joined the Entrepreneurial Services Group. There, I developed a passion for start-ups, turn-arounds, growth initiatives and business strategy.” Her trajectory took a significant turn as she ventured into technology events, online delivery and higher education start-ups, solidifying her role as a change agent and ‘fixer’ adept at managing start-ups, mergers and acquisitions, organisational and leadership transitions and growth and scale opportunities.
One of the highlights of Dr. Saxton’s career was her tenure as the founding President of AUBH. “It was such a fulfilling role and a great honour to lead AUBH in its start-up,” she reminisces. “I enjoyed the challenge of creating a new kind of academe for Bahrain as well as exploring all that Bahrain and its neighbouring Arab countries had to offer and I made lifelong friends and colleagues.”
Transitioning to the MEI, Washington’s oldest think tank dedicated solely to the region, Dr. Saxton leverages her experience to lead during a critical period. She emphasises, “Providing leadership at this complex time in the world while ensuring a productive and supportive environment for MEI’s staff and scholars is my main priority.” Her goals include creating a sustainable organisational structure to match the potential of MEI’s focus on quality and impact, growing and allocating resources effectively and enhancing MEI’s strategic priorities with programs and convenings that make it the “go-to” place for US – Middle East affairs. Dr. Saxton’s experience in Bahrain has been instrumental in preparing her for the role at MEI. She reflects: “Certainly, I was able to learn a lot about the GCC culture, traditions and growth potential in
many areas. Bahrain is such a warm and welcoming Kingdom, and I enjoy being part of the community. As a board member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain, I understood the importance of business and trade, and the role that training and education have in impacting the labour force to support the goals of the country.” Continuing with support of Bahrain, she is honoured to join the distinguished Board of Directors at the American Bahraini Friendship Society (ABFS) in Washington, DC.
Her vision for MEI is to be the leading Middle East-focused institution in the world, delivering high-quality, non-partisan insight, analysis and prescription for thought leaders and policymakers. She envisions MEI growing its convening strength that continues to foster strong relationships between the US and the Middle East by promoting dialogue to build peace, security and prosperity.
A key aspect of her leadership strategy involves working closely with MEI’s board Chairman, General (ret.) John P. Abizaid and the rest of the distinguished members of the board of directors, corporate partners, donors, scholars and staff to ensure alignment around MEI’s mission. “MEI will continue to serve as a preeminent hub at the intersection of policy, education and culture which will enhance cooperation, problem-solving and innovative policy ideas,” she emphasises. Looking ahead, Dr. Saxton is excited about several upcoming projects and events. These include additional policy programming, leading delegations in the Middle East region, standing up an initiative to engage with the congressional and executive branches and pursuing opportunities for MEI’s Arts & Culture (A&C) Center.
AT THE HELM OF QUALITY HEALTHCARE
As the Group CEO of KIMSHEALTH, Dr. Sheriff M. Sahadulla has spearheaded numerous initiatives that have significantly expanded and enhanced the organisation’s operations. He spoke to Bahrain This Month about his inspiring journey.
Dr. Sheriff’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career. He attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. “Initially seeking a clinical position, I stumbled into healthcare management by chance. A hospital in Massachusetts was developing a Hospitalist Programme and hired me straight out of residency as the Associate Medical Director. The last 26 years prior to joining KIMSHEALTH was mainly spent in healthcare leadership positions based in Boston,” he explains.
His move to KIMSHEALTH was driven by his advocacy for physician leadership in healthcare. Since joining in 2015, he has served in various leadership roles, ultimately becoming the Group CEO for India and the Middle East.
Mentorship has played a crucial role in shaping Dr. Sheriff’s leadership style. He cites three influential figures: his father, Dr. Bill Stephan and his wife, Dr. Amena Malik. He describes his father as “the organisational leader I aspire to be” and credits Dr. Stephan with teaching him how to balance clinical work with leadership duties. His wife, a leader in healthcare quality who runs the accreditation programme at the National Health Regulatory Authority, is “the quality leader I aspire to be”.
Under Dr. Sheriff’s leadership, KIMSHEALTH has achieved remarkable growth. He identified five key focus areas: patient experience enhancement, technology and digital transformation, standardised clinical practice, quality excellence through international
accreditation, and a robust learning and development platform for employees. These strategies have propelled KIMSHEALTH to new heights since it opened its first medical institution in 2004, with all 17 medical facilities in the GCC region receiving accreditation from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI).
Dr. Sheriff emphasises the thoughtful integration of technology in healthcare, focusing on its potential to enhance physician efficiency, improve patient experience and boost operational productivity. He states: “I do not believe in using technology for the sake of using technology. Each new implementation is looked at as how will it add value in one of these categories”.
PIONEERS IN HEALTHCARE GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE
American Mission Hospital (AMH) has been revolutionising healthcare in Bahrain since it opened its doors in 1903. The hospital shares its plans to forge forward, highlighting essential collaborations, which will pave the way for a new era of healthcare in Bahrain.
“We are gearing up for the imminent era of large-scale AI applications in healthcare,” says American Mission Hospital Chief Medical Officer and Corporate CEO, Dr. George Cheriyan. The hospital’s leaders are working on a new strategic plan that brings together human capital and medical technology which can give Bahrain healthcare of global standards. This is just how the pioneers, who founded the hospital, brought modern healthcare to Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf region, 120 years ago.
“Our hospital’s history is, in fact, even longer,” Dr Cheriyan adds. “Samuel Zwemer, the American Christian missionary, had come to Bahrain in December 1892. He started his clinic within three months of his arrival. The little clinic he started in Manama Souq grew into a hospital that was built and opened in 1903 as the first modern healthcare facility in the entire Arabian Peninsula.”
In 2024, the American connections are growing even stronger. Its current engagement with Mayo Clinic for long-term collaboration will bring world-class healthcare to Bahrain. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, is ranked No.1 among the World’s Best Hospitals 2024, by Newsweek-Statista’s Global Hospital Ratings. This latest annual ranking had used data from 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries.
“Thanks to the wise leadership of this nation, which aims to improve the overall healthcare delivery in the Kingdom of Bahrain, our yearlong discussions, trainings and orientations with Mayo Clinic are going on full steam. And, God willing, it will soon culminate in the signing
of an agreement that will make us one of Mayo’s network healthcare centres,” he says.
The senior leadership team from Bahrain had visited Rochester, Minnesota, USA, in October 2023 to discuss the way forward, and Mayo Clinic CEO, Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, visited Bahrain in April 2024 to speak at the C3 Healthcare and Business Summit.
“Recently, in June 2024, on the invitation of Dr Gianrico Farrugia, I had the privilege of attending his organisation’s Platform Med conference in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and got to understand the preparations Mayo is already making to embrace the future with its digital platforms and Generative AI models,” says Dr. Cheriyan.
In the future, AMH will not only offer healthcare but also conduct training and research that would benefit the Kingdom and the wider region through valuable collaborations.
“We are confident that our ongoing collaboration with RCSI Bahrain and our soon-to-come collaborations with Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA and the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India, will soon give Bahrain the best healthcare possible, from experts; whether they are physically present in Bahrain or not”.
As a not-for-profit healthcare institution, AMH has no share-holders who seek any profits. The management of the hospital reports to a board of directors - which comprises Reformed Church in America (RCA) officials, former ambassadors, healthcare experts and management professionals from multinational companies, from USA and Bahrain.
The Board Members and Management teams of Mayo Clinic and AMH meet in Rochester, MN, USA, in October 2023.

BAHRAIN’S TEXTILE POWERHOUSE
Since its establishment in 2006, WestPoint Home Bahrain has become a manufacturing powerhouse that has transformed the textile landscape of the region, growing to become the largest home textile manufacturer in the Arabian Gulf. As part of WestPoint Home LLC, a leading US marketer of home textile products with a storied history dating back to 1813, the Bahrain operation underscores the company’s commitment to global excellence and local impact.
Headquartered in the United States, the company quickly earned a reputation for innovation and quality, a tradition that continues to this day. Over the years, WestPoint Home has expanded its operations globally, with significant manufacturing base in the Kingdom of Bharain in the Al Mazara’a Industrial Park.
WestPoint Home Bahrain’s journey began with the purchase of Manama Textiles in 2006. This acquisition was a strategic move that turned Bahrain into a vital cog in WestPoint Home’s global manufacturing network. The facility in Bahrain is a stateof-the-art, vertically integrated textile manufacturing hub that boasts the latest in textile technology. With a total direct investment of USD165 million and growing, the Bahrain operation is equipped to handle every stage of textile production – from spinning and weaving to dyeing, printing, finishing and stitching.
WestPoint Home Bahrain’s manufacturing capabilities are truly world-class. The facility produces a wide range of home textile products, including bed sheets, pillowcases, shams, bed skirts and more. Automated cutand-sew equipment further enhances the production process, allowing the facility to produce millions of sheets and pillowcases annually. In total, the facility can manufacture, package and ship as much as 40 million yards of fabric each year.
The company’s commitment to quality and innovation has earned it partnerships with some of the most renowned brands in the world, including Ralph Lauren, Marriott, Hilton, Bed Bath & Beyond, John Lewis, Sam’s Club and Amazon.
The impact of WestPoint Home Bahrain on the local economy is significant. Since its inception, the company has contributed more than USD1 billion to Bahraini exports to the US, thanks in part to the Bahrain Free Trade Agreement which allows many products to ship to the USA duty-free. The facility
currently employs around 1,250 people, including 90 Bahrainis, reflecting its role as a major employer in the region.
While the establishment has numerous commendable achievements, WestPoint Home Bahrain is not resting on its laurels. The company is actively exploring new markets in the Middle East and expanding its local presence. Partnerships with retailers like Lulu Hypermarkets are helping to increase the visibility of its ‘Made in Bahrain’ products. Looking ahead, the company plans to further enhance its manufacturing capabilities in Bahrain by setting up towel manufacturing operations, a move that will not only boost sales but also create additional jobs for Bahraini citizens. This planned expansion aligns with the company’s strategy to leverage Bahrain’s business-friendly environment and stable infrastructure to drive future growth.
The success of WestPoint Home Bahrain can be further attributed to its strategic leadership. President and CEO of WestPoint Home, Steve Burns, has been instrumental in driving the company’s expansion and operational excellence. With a background in electrical engineering from Princeton University and extensive experience in manufacturing, organisational strategy and supply chain management, Mr. Burns has guided the company through significant milestones in business expansion, lean manufacturing, process optimisation and sustainability.

Celebrating 50 Years of Camaraderie
Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience, but for Susie Bower and Manal Akasha, it was an opportunity to find a new home and build lasting friendships. Both women, who moved to Bahrain two and a half years ago, have managed to integrate into the local community through their involvement with the American Women’s Association (AWA). On the heels of the associations Golden Jubilee, Farah Baig discovers how their stories highlight the importance of organisations like the AWA in fostering connections and supporting charitable initiatives.
AWA President, Ms. Bower, originally from the United States, and AWA Vice President Ms. Akasha, who hails from Sudan and Egypt, both relocated to Bahrain from different parts of the world. Bower moved from Italy after a prior stint in Japan, while Akasha came from Dubai, having previously lived in Qatar. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they quickly found common ground and friendship through their involvement in AWA.
“When we first arrived here, it was like a breath of fresh air,” Susie recalls. “Within two weeks of living here, I told my husband that this place feels like home. There’s just something about Bahrain that makes you feel welcome.” Manal echoes this sentiment, noting that joining AWA helped her feel at home almost immediately. “Since I moved to Bahrain, I joined AWA and it became like my second home,” she says. “Meeting nice people and making friends was effortless through AWA.”
“The moment I joined AWA, I felt 100 percent supported by the community,” Manal shares. “In times of happiness and sadness, the support and friendship from AWA members have been incredible.” This sense of community and support is what sets AWA apart from other organisations, according to Susie. “When you walk into a meeting, you can immediately feel how welcoming everyone is,” she says. “The diversity of cultures represented and the warmth of the members make AWA a unique and special association.”
A MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENT
The AWA, established 50 years ago, is celebrating its golden jubilee this September. Originally founded by three women, the organisation has grown into a vital part of the expatriate community in Bahrain. It supports around 30 local charities and provides a social network for women from all walks of life. “AWA started with the intention of giving back to the local community, and it has evolved to support social activities and build a sisterhood among women,” Susie explains. The upcoming golden jubilee celebration marks a significant milestone for AWA, reflecting on five decades of service and sisterhood. “Celebrating 50 years is a remarkable achievement,” Susie says with pride. “It shows the strength and resilience of our organisation and the dedication of our members over the years.” The jubilee will feature a series of events, including gala dinners, cultural exhibitions and charity fundraisers, aiming to highlight AWA’s contributions and celebrate its vibrant community.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
One of the key aspects of AWA is its focus on charity and community service. The organisation – a diverse group of women of all ages and nationalities – raises funds locally and distributes them to various causes within Bahrain. “We support local charities by raising money and giving it back to the country,” says Manal. “Our main mission is to support each other, regardless of nationality or religion, and to give back to the community.” AWA’s charitable efforts include support for the Al Rashad Centre for Autism, Bahrain Mobility International in Isa Town and Shamsaha Women’s Centre, an organisation
that assists survivors of abuse.
For Susie and Manal, the charity work is a significant part of their involvement with AWA. The association’s commitment to charity extends beyond simple donations. It emphasises hands-on involvement, encouraging members to volunteer and engage directly with the beneficiaries they support. “We don’t just write cheques,” Manal stresses. “We visit the centres we support, spend time with the children and adults, and see firsthand the impact of our efforts.” This direct involvement not only enriches the lives of those they help but also deepens the members’ connection to the community.
In fact, in order to raise funds to support these charitable organisations, the AWA organises events such as the biennial Cherry Tree Trot which inspires involvement from the wider community of Bahrain. “We had an incredible turn out at this year’s event and saw participation from schools and over 30 centres,” says Manal. “It was a resounding success and raised over BD12,000.”
ACTIVITIES FOR ALL
One of the key factors that distinguishes AWA is its multitude of groups which cater to a diverse range of activities and interests. The craft group, for instance, meets every Tuesday and creates items that are sold to raise funds for charity. “AWA’s craft group is probably our biggest and most active internal group. In fact, they even meet during summer,” Susie notes. “What they create is sold at events like the AWA Snowflake Craft Fair to generate donations for local charities.”
The monthly ‘Women of Taste’ luncheon group is another popular activity, where members visit different restaurants and experience new cuisines. “It’s a newer group
but very popular,” Susie says. “We go to different restaurants and sometimes have cooking demonstrations.” Other activities include Scrabble, book clubs, and Bollywood dancing, providing a wide range of options for members to get involved and meet new people.
LOOKING FORWARD
For both Susie and Manal, their roles in AWA have been transformative and they found a sense of purpose and belonging through their leadership positions. “Being in a leadership role has allowed me to give back more effectively and inspire others to get involved,” Susie shares. Manal adds: “It’s about making a difference, not just for the community but also for ourselves. The friendships and connections we’ve made are invaluable.”
Their mutual journey with AWA illustrates the profound impact that community groups can have on expatriates and Bahrainis alike. Their experiences underscore the importance of creating supportive networks in new environments, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care. As they look ahead, both women are committed to continuing their work with AWA, ensuring that it remains a pillar of support and charity in Bahrain.
“We want to leave a lasting legacy,” Susie says. “Our goal is to keep growing, reaching more people and making a positive impact in the community.” Manal agrees, noting that their work is far from done: “There’s always more to do, more people to help and more connections to be made. AWA has given us a platform to do just that, and we’re excited for what the future holds.”
Those wishing to join the AWA are welcome to do so and can reach out to the organisation through awabahrain.org for more details.

A DYNAMIC LEADER
Member of Parliament for the Central Governorate of Bahrain, HE Mohamed Hussain Al Janahi, exclusively spoke to Bahrain This Month in a wide-ranging discussion which includes his motivations for entering politics, legislative priorities and his vision for the future of the Kingdom.
What inspired you to enter politics and what do you see as your primary mission?
After 32 years working, eventually reaching head of protocol PR at the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, I retired. This was in 2022, and I found myself with a lot of time. To be honest, I never thought to go into politics in my life! Then I suddenly got the urge and three days before the closing of nominees for election, I threw my hat in the ring and ended up being elected! I won the election for the area of Manama that includes Hoora, Gudaibiya, and the Diplomatic Area. This is the biggest constituency in Bahrain, with all the main companies, banks and hotels under my jurisdiction.
Bahrain is undergoing significant economic reforms. What initiatives are you supporting to boost economic growth and diversification?
Bahrain is improving its economy, although it faced difficulties a couple of years back during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, under the leadership of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, there is a push to improve Bahrain’s economy by bringing more companies and banks to the country. We also have a lot of activities like Formula 1 and the Bahrain Airshow which brings attention to the country. Furthermore, I believe there are around 10 major new hotels expected to open soon, leading to Bahrain boosting its standing in the GCC economy.
What measures are being taken to address youth unemployment in Bahrain, and how do you envision creating more job opportunities for young people?
Youth unemployment is a big problem in Bahrain. In many households, you may find more than one or two unemployed individuals, which makes it difficult for parents, especially when they are retired. The government is trying its best to address this through the Ministry of Labour. As an MP, I announced recently that I would take care of employing Bahrainis by inviting around 40 companies to an event where job seekers can come with their CVs and apply.
Can you discuss any upcoming reforms in the education sector and how they aim to improve the quality of education in Bahrain? Education in Bahrain has vastly improved in the past decade or so. We now have various colleges, including business and catering, and multiple internationally-regarded universities, which have improved the education of Bahrainis significantly. In fact, Bahrain was the first in the Gulf to have such an educational system.
What are the current challenges facing Bahrain’s healthcare system, and what steps are being taken to enhance healthcare services and accessibility?
The government always prioritises health, alongside education and housing. We have many hospitals across different towns and cities, the most recent one being King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) in Muharraq. We have facilities like BDF Hospital and Salmaniya, which is one of the founding public hospitals in the GCC. Private hospitals have also increased, which wasn’t the case 20 to 30 years ago. Earlier, we used to take patients abroad for surgeries, but now we have good doctors and hospitals locally.
How is the Parliament working towards advancing women’s rights and promoting gender equality in Bahrain?
Women in Bahrain occupy a significant space in society, contributing equally. The Kingdom has provided the first female nurse and judge in the Gulf and HRH Shaikha Sabeeka chairs the Supreme Council for Women, which supports and champions Bahraini women. We now have a plethora of females in leadership roles, including the chairwomen of banks and ministers, reflecting the progress in gender equality.
What is your stance on environmental issues, and what policies are you advocating for to address climate change and promote sustainability in Bahrain?
Climate change is a global issue, and islands and coastal areas are at risk. Bahrain is lucky to
be in the Gulf, but we must take protective measures. All GCC countries are trying to address climate issues, including cloud seeding to induce rain.
How do you view Bahrain’s current foreign relations, particularly with neighbouring countries, and what are your priorities in terms of international diplomacy?
Bahrain, since the 1980s, has been a proud member of the GCC, a union of six countries. We hope to see a single currency for the GCC, which would strengthen our economic position globally. The unity and collective economy would be beneficial for all member countries.
What efforts are being made to engage more effectively with the public and your constituents?
HM King Hamad established the Parliament in 2001, allowing freedom of speech and changing many rules to benefit Bahrainis. The Parliament is still young compared to others globally, but we strive to represent the voices of Bahrainis in every area and bring their concerns to the government.
When you’re not serving your constituents, what are your hobbies and passions?
Since I was 15 years old, I have been collecting stamps. I joined the Bahrain Philatelic Stamp Society in 1980, and I was the youngest collector then. Besides stamps, I collect paper money, documents, watches, cameras, stones and more. I have rare envelopes from as far back as 1884, and the first local stamp issued in 1953. My passion extends to art and carving, participating in national events with my works.
Is there anything more you would like to add?
I appreciate this opportunity to speak to your esteemed magazine! I would like to put on record that I am committed to working tirelessly for Bahrain’s progress and ensuring every citizen has the chance to succeed.
A LIFE SHAPED BY STRUGGLE
KARIM YOUNIS’S JOURNEY FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE
Karim Youssef Fadl Younis, a Palestinian citizen of Israel, recently stepped out of the shadows after serving 40 years in Israeli prisons. His story is one of endurance, conviction and unwavering commitment to his cause.
On a visit to Bahrain last month, he spoke to publisher George F. Middleton.
In this exclusive interview, we delve into the life of the second longest-serving Palestinian prisoner and explore the impact of his incarceration.
Karim Younis, the second-longest-serving prisoner ever in an Israeli jail, possesses an extremely calm demeanor for someone who has gone through so much in his 67 years of life. “I think that’s because four decades in prison teaches you to be a little patient,” he smiles.
Younis is an extremely significant figure for Palestinians. He authored political works advocating for dialogue and agreements between Palestinians and Israelis. His writings resonated with fellow inmates and the broader Palestinian community. Younis’s voice transcended prison walls, urging for peace and understanding amidst the conflict. His unwavering spirit and commitment to justice sustained him through the darkest of days.
The distinguished and resolute figure in front of me looked strong and determined, belying the fact that he had spent all but one of the previous 41 years in an Israeli jail. With an extended family consisting of his siblings’ children and grandchildren, although with none of his own, Karim reflects on the changes that have taken place over the last forty years.
Originally from ‘Ara, a predominantly Arab village within the pre-1948 Israeli borders, his life took a dramatic turn on June 1, 1983, when Israeli authorities arrested him at school together with his cousin Maher.
“Everyone is different and everything is different,” he says. “Forty-four years ago, I used to live in a village with houses every 400 to 500 meters and trees, and now... my village is a town with all the houses stuck together. The cars, the streets, everything has changed…. even the people,” he laments.
I was curious to know what it was like for Karim Younis, the Palestinian Mandela, on his release from prison after being deprived of his freedom for so long.
“Without a doubt,” he replied, “the feeling of freedom after 40 years is indescribable, but it’s not just freedom of movement that we are talking about here. Freedom is not complete until everyone is free,” he says.
We then went on to ask him what he had learned and how his life had changed due to this whole experience. He responds, “There are many things. But, most of all, after 40 years of imprisonment, my sense of national pride at being a Palestinian increased dramatically.”
Since he possessed an Israeli passport, he was allowed visits from his parents in prison. However, his father died 10 years ago on the same day that he would ultimately be released a decade later, and then his mother passed away only six months prior to his release. Karim believes that a majority of the Israeli people supported the concept of peace and security with Palestinians at the time, which led up to the Oslo Accords. Now, however, he suggests that sentiment has gone the other way, with at least 70 percent of the Israeli population supporting the government’s uncompromising stance.
According to Karim, Jewish and Israeli activists who stand resolutely against Israeli Zionist oppression are very much in the minority. Those few remaining, who still call for social justice, equality, and peace, have severely declined
since the days of Rabin when the peace process was on track.
Karim argues that there are two schools of thought in the Israeli political world. The first decision taken after the occupation by the Israeli government in 1967 was that the occupied Arab and Palestinian lands would be controlled temporarily until a peace deal was achieved. That was the Israeli government’s perceived policy at the time.
The Israeli Labour Party, in the meantime, was encouraging all Arab neighbours to cooperate with them
“In order that we can give you peace and we can give the Palestinian people peace,” says Karim. The Arabs were told that they needed to make concessions, and the implication was that these concessions would ultimately lead to a permanent and just peace for all concerned.
According to Karim, the Labour Party, which instigated this plan, now has five serving members in the Israeli Knesset today. Furthermore, he wagers that these five members are more focused on discussing climate change issues than bringing about true peace and justice to the region.
Extremism has taken over the right in Israeli politics, and these far-right fundamentalists are now promoting the concept of a greater Israel well beyond its current borders. Expansionism is their aim, and compromise seems out of the question.
Karim acknowledges the fact that in the last 20 years, the Israeli government has tried to make peace on occasions. He believes that all efforts have failed since the Oslo Agreement is no longer seen as a viable option.
“Palestinians on the West Bank continue to have their lands and homes taken away from them. The settlers encroach on what little is left of the proposed Palestinian State via the ongoing establishment of small cantons. Unfortunately, the Israeli right-wing, led by the likes of Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, are even more extreme in ideology than Netanyahu himself, who was always against any viable peace agreement from the very beginning. It seems to me that the extreme Zionist objectives are nothing less than the total submission, humiliation and surrender of Palestinians”, he says.
He continues, “When the people of Gaza, made up of generational descendants of dispersed refugees from other parts of Palestine, made it clear that they preferred to die where they were instead of leaving, the authorities agreed that transfers would be voluntary.”
“The extremists have made conditions so unbearable that we are now witnessing severe shortages of food and water, resulting in misery on an unimaginable scale.”
According to Karim, 60 percent of all homes were demolished, and almost 80 percent of institutions, including schools and hospitals, have been destroyed. He believes that what is happening in Gaza today is an enforced exodus aimed at squeezing them so badly that they will eventually give up. Israel is banking on the fact that these conditions will result in the voluntary departure of all Palestinians from the area.
I asked Karim what his most optimistic hope was for a future resolution to this issue. He replied, “On October 7, the invincibility of Israel was called into question. And without external support, the Israelis were seen as fallible through the mirrored reflection of social media.”
“Gaza has shown this,” he says, “But we want peace. The international twostate solution has been supported by us historically. The PLO has been supporting this process, but unfortunately, nothing has been implemented yet. We are willing and able to support a serious initiative in this regard.”
In recent times, Palestinians face severe restrictions and repercussions for political actions, even those conducted peacefully and legally. Authorities closely monitor social media. “Over 120 Palestinian students were expelled from Israeli universities recently, including doctors and nurses, due to their political activities,” he says.
Peaceful protests, even those previously permitted, are retrospectively punished.
Participants from five years ago are being arrested now. This has led to widespread job losses among professionals who support Palestinian causes.
“All these individuals being targeted are Israeli citizens, highlighting the conditions they face. Settlers, armed with M16 rifles and 450,000 bullets, are given free rein to attack Palestinians and their property without facing legal consequences. The military often supports these settlers, blocking humanitarian aid and enabling violence,” he states.
“In conflicts, settlers can retaliate violently, often with military backing, resulting in significant destruction of Palestinian property and towns,” says Karim. “Even when settlers engage in criminal acts, such as stopping aid trucks and destroying food, they are not held accountable.”
“Overall, Palestinians endure systemic harassment, violence, and legal persecution for any pro-Palestinian activities, reinforcing the severe restrictions and discrimination they face.
There is no due process as is the case in the USA or Europe, for instance,” he continues.
“For years, the various governments led by Benjamin Netanyahu took an approach that divided power between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank—undermining Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and thereby preventing him; or anyone else in the Palestinian Authority’s West Bank government for that matter; from advancing toward the establishment of a Palestinian state,” he concludes.
The debate surrounding Younis’s status underscores the complexities of identity, justice, and reconciliation in the region. As a symbol of resilience, Karim Younis’s journey reflects the broader struggle of Palestinian prisoners.
According to Israeli reports, approximately 4,700 Palestinians remain in Israeli jails and detention centers, including 150 minors and 835 administrative detainees who have not been charged or tried. Younis’s sacrifice echoes through their stories, reminding us that every prisoner represents an entire people.
Similar to that of Nelson Mandela, Karim Younis’s life has been a tapestry woven with resilience, determination, and unwavering advocacy. His journey spans decades, marked by imprisonment, struggle, and an unwavering commitment to justice. As the world watches, we hope that justice will prevail, and the legacy of those who fight for a better future will endure.
Karim Younis’s 40-year incarceration had profound effects on his life. The relentless confinement, isolation, and uncertainty took a toll on his physical and mental well-being.
Yet, amidst the darkness, his unwavering commitment to justice and resilience sustained him. He emerged as a symbol of endurance, challenging the status quo and advocating for Palestinian rights. His story underscores the human cost of prolonged imprisonment and the urgent need for a just resolution to the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.
Karim Younis’s bracelet, bearing Nelson Mandela’s prison number (4666—while his prison number was Mandela’s reversed—6444) symbolizes shared struggles. Could it foreshadow a future where Younis emerges as a leader, advocating for justice, equality, and humanity?

PROMOTING PEACE THROUGH SPORTS
In a recent visit to Bahrain, Palestinian Supreme Youth and Sports Council Chairman, President of Palestine Football Association and Head of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, Major General Jibril Rajoub, oversaw two friendly matches between the Palestinian women’s football team and Bahrain. During his stay, he spoke to Bahrain This Month about his dedication to promoting sports, especially women’s participation, during his nation’s ongoing struggles.
The Palestinian women’s football team, established under challenging circumstances, symbolises resilience and determination. “In spite of all the difficulties, even the restrictions on our movement, we made a huge effort to come here and play these matches,” Mr. Rajoub explained. The Palestinian Football Association, originally formed before the 1948 Nakba, faced many disruptions. However, it was re-established and joined FIFA in 1998, marking a significant step in Palestinian sports history.
Mr. Rajoub’s leadership has been pivotal since he took charge in 2008. “Immediately upon my appointment, I started organising fixtures,” he shared, highlighting his swift efforts to strengthen women’s football. Today, Palestine boasts a robust women’s national team, with 21 women’s clubs and a significant presence of female referees and coaches. “One third of all Palestinian sport associations are females,” Mr. Rajoub noted, underlining the strides made towards gender equality in sports.
He believes that sports, particularly football, play a crucial role in uniting people and promoting peace. Not only that, he argues that it can connect the world and present the Palestinian cause. “For me, presenting our justice to the international community, to everybody, through athletes, teams and games, fosters a peaceful culture and protects our youth from frustration and hopelessness,” he said.
Mr. Rajoub recounted a notable event where the Palestinian women’s national team played against Dublin’s Bohemian club, highlighting the significance of such international engagements. “It was a great event in Europe, promoting the awareness of peaceful culture and education,” he remarked.
Looking ahead, the Palestinian men’s football team is gearing up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. “There’s a big chance for Palestine to qualify for the third phase of the World Cup,” he said with optimism. Such achievements would not only boost national pride but also reinforce the strategy of using sports to build bridges and foster international solidarity.
However, the journey has been fraught with challenges, primarily due to the ongoing Israeli occupation. “One of the worst enemies of this Israeli occupation is sport,” Mr. Rajoub asserted, highlighting the destruction of sports facilities and the killing of more than 300 athletes, including 82 footballers. Despite these setbacks, the Palestinian sports community remains undeterred. “We have no other choice. We will not give up,” he said staunchly.
Mr. Rajoub has actively raised these issues with governing body FIFA, advocating for the suspension of Israel due to violations of FIFA statutes and the Olympic Charter. “For example, one of their clear violations is that they have six clubs playing in the national official league while the clubs are located in the occupied territories,” he pointed out. Such violations, he argues, should not go unchecked.
Ultimately, through his efforts to promote Palestinian sports and in particular women’s football, Mr. Rajoub wants to advocate for hope, resilience and peace. His dedication to this cause, despite numerous challenges, underscores the power of sports to unite and inspire on the global stage.

The Best of Bo.Sabi
Bo.Sabi located at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa is known for its tantalising Far East Asian cuisine. Farah Baig puts this delightful restaurant to the taste test this month and explores a whole new world of flavours.
If there’s anything I’ve learned from past experiences, The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa does nothing by half measures. So, this month, I was naturally excited to dine at Bo.Sabi which has grown to be one of my favourite restaurants on the island.
Settling into our seats at Bo.Sabi I was reminded why I always found this restaurant to be such a treat; the décor is just beautiful, the music enchanting and service impeccable. Our hostess soon served us refreshing beverages – a must on these sweltering summer nights. While all of these effectively quenched our thirst, we were partial to the Ginger Fizz mocktail which was just zingy.
The culinary team soon whipped up a veritable feast for the table with starters and some of our mains making their way to us. They say “You eat with your eyes first,” and that’s precisely how we felt with the beautiful plating. Ultimately, I broke one of the fundamental rules of dining and tucked into the tempting Korean-Style Spicy Beef. Its beef spare ribs were phenomenally tender and the blend of flavours just spectacularsweet, pleasantly salty and beautifully
tender. Coupled with the subtle flavours of Fried Rice, it was just perfect!
Next, we feasted on the selection of starters including Chicken Satay, Edamame and Gyoza. Each was perfectly spiced and whetted our appetite for the rest of the experience. The Chicken Satay had the most pleasant balance of flavours with the peanut sauce.
Nasi Goreng, a staple in Indonesia, followed. This really had everything a person could possibly want for lunch or dinner – delicious grilled chicken skewers, fried rice with a generous helping of shrimp, delightfully crisp prawn crackers, a serving of fresh salad and a fried egg – just pure comfort food.
Proving, once again, that they really know how to cook their meats, we were served the Taiwanese Roasted Lamb Shank. This falloff-the-bone lamb had a medley of mouthwatering flavours with ginger and roasted anise coming together beautifully with the sweetness of honey and crisp lotus root. The Indonesian Prawn Curry, too, was fantastic with its rich creamy flavours, perfectly cooked prawns and soft potatoes. Finally, the stir-fried flat noodles and Spicy Tuna Rolls which had a zesty kick to it thanks to the Togaroshi chili powder.
While we were perfectly satiated and experienced everything one could expect
from a memorable dining experience, the team had more in store for us. We were served three of their sensational desserts: Thai Mango Sticky Rice, Banana Fritters and Japanese Cheesecake. Each effectively sweetened the experience with its rich textures, but the Banana Fritters were just unparalleled. These fritters had the perfect crunch and we enjoyed the difference in texture of the soft banana, crisp batter and creamy ice cream. The contrasting temperatures were sensational too.
A close second was the light and airy Japanese Cheesecake served with Red Plum and Passion Fruit Custard. Then again, who could go wrong ending a phenomenal night of dining with a classic dessert like Thai Mango Sticky Rice.
Planning on celebrating with sensational Far East Asian cuisine? Bo.Sabi does it best!

The Tok of the Town!
Stepping into Wok Tok, we were greeted with a warm and inviting atmosphere – a must when dining out in Bahrain. The restaurant’s decor combines modern elegance with traditional Asian elements, creating a space that is stylish and comfortable.
Our culinary journey began with assorted dumplings served in traditional bamboo steamers. Each was a delightful morsel, with thin, delicate wrappers encasing flavourful fillings. The balance of textures and flavours was impeccable, setting a high standard for the meal to come.
Dynamite Prawns, which came next, were aptly named for their explosive flavour. These were perfectly cooked, tender and juicy, while the spicy sauce added a fiery kick that was tempered by a hint of sweetness. This dish was a clear favourite and left a lasting impression. Moving on to the main courses, the Beef Lo Mein Noodles was practically a bowl of comfort with the chewy texture of the noodles and tender beef. Fresh vegetables and its delectable savouriness made this dish one that we’d crave soon enough. The Orange Chicken was another standout dish, featuring woktossed crispy chicken coated in a sweet and tangy orange sauce. The contrast between the crispy exterior and the succulent chicken was delightful and the sauce provided a harmonious blend of sweetness and acidity that elevated the dish.
Nestled in the picturesque setting of Amwaj Islands, Wok Tok offers a captivating dining experience that perfects the rich flavours of Asian cuisine. Edwin D’Souza shares his thoughts on this culinary gem.
A classic stir fry is a must in my books when indulging in Asian cuisine; so, the Stir Fry Chicken with Cashew Nuts proved to be a testament to the restaurant’s mastery of texture and flavour combinations. The tender chicken was complemented by the crunch of cashew nuts and chestnuts, while the subtle seasoning allowed the natural flavours of the ingredients to shine.
We couldn’t help but indulge in the Black Peppered Lamb next which was tender and had a rich, earthy flavour that was enhanced by the bold notes of black pepper. Similarly, the Black Peppered Beef with Asparagus was executed flawlessly, with juicy beef and crisp asparagus coming together beautifully. The rich sauces of each of these main courses melded well with the Egg Fried Rice which was perfectly seasoned.
Ultimately, it was clear that Wok Tok impresses with its commitment to quality and flavour, offering a dining experience that is both sophisticated and satisfying. Each dish reflects a careful consideration of ingredients and an expertise in cooking techniques that elevates the meal – which can be enjoyed in the comfort of your home or at the venue. I’d also like to mention the staff were very attentive and knowledgeable, providing excellent recommendations and ensuring that our dining experience was seamless and enjoyable. The inviting atmosphere further enhanced the experience, making Wok Tok a must-visit
destination for anyone seeking an authentic and memorable Asian culinary journey in Bahrain. Whether you’re a resident or visitor, Wok Tok promises to deliver a meal that will tantalise your taste buds (as it did ours!) and leave you longing for your next visit.

The New Ford Everest:
A Bold Adventure in SUV Excellence
Driving to the Ford showroom to pick up the new Ford Everest, I couldn’t help but have a sense of excitement. This is a vehicle that commands respect and I was positive it would be a thrill to drive.
At first glance, the new Ford Everest exudes a presence with its muscular build and modern aesthetics. The front fascia features a bold grille with a refined chrome finish, flanked by sleek LED headlights for heightened visibility and a contemporary touch. The sculpted hood and pronounced wheel arches convey strength and capability, while the clean lines and aerodynamic profile enhance its visual appeal.
Its side profile showcases its impressive stance, supported by large alloy wheels that offer both style and functionality. The high ground clearance not only adds to its rugged look but also ensures it can handle rough terrains with ease. In fact, the Everest’s advanced 4x4 system, coupled with its Terrain Management System, allows drivers to tackle a wide array of terrains with confidence as it adjusts its performance to ensure optimal traction and stability.
The new Ford Everest’s interior balances luxury with practicality making it ideal for families and adventurers alike. The cabin, which seats up to seven occupants, is spacious and features soft-touch surfaces, premium leather upholstery, and tasteful accents which create an inviting atmosphere.
Under the hood of the new Ford Everest lies a range of powerful and efficient engines designed to deliver exceptional performance
The new Ford Everest has arrived, and it brings with it a bold statement in the world of SUVs. This month, Edwin D’Souza explores the latest iteration of the Everest which builds on its robust heritage with enhancements in technology, performance, and design making it standout in its class.
across various driving conditions. The available powertrains include a petrol engine that combines impressive torque with fuel efficiency, making it well-suited for both onroad cruising and off-road adventures. Behind the wheel, I soon discovered that it delivers an experience that is both smooth and responsive. The refined suspension system effectively absorbs bumps and road imperfections. I also appreciated the precise steering and well-tuned chassis which offered excellent handling.
A suite of advanced technologies that enhance convenience, connectivity and safety amplifies this already incredible experience. Seeing as safety is paramount, Ford has equipped the new Everest with an array of features designed to protect occupants and enhance driver confidence. The Ford Co-Pilot360 suite includes advanced driver-assist technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and autonomous emergency braking. Additionally, the Everest’s robust construction and multiple airbags provide a strong safety net in the event of an impact. A rearview camera, parking sensors, and 360-degree camera system simplify parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces, further enhancing the vehicle’s safety profile.
At the heart of the dashboard is the SYNC 4 infotainment system, featuring a large touchscreen with intuitive controls and seamless smartphone integration. For audiophiles, the Everest comes with a
premium sound system that delivers crisp and immersive audio quality.
After putting the Ford Everest through its paces, it was clear why it stands out as a versatile and capable SUV. Ford has truly crafted an SUV that caters to the diverse needs of modern drivers, cementing the Everest’s position as a leader in its class.

THE EPITOME OF LUXURY
In the ultra-competitive full-size luxury sedan segment, where opulence and performance combine to create increasingly impressive machines, it can be hard to know where to spend your hard-earned dinars. Luckily, Kristian Harrison found out how the new Audi A8L steals a march on its rivals by getting the little things right.
Scan to watch the video
Picture this: my friends (usually just one as you’d be lucky to fit two) and I, crammed into my treasured Audi TT, groaning at every bump and turn. The lack of space often turns our cruises into cramped escapades and bemused grumbles. But the A8L? That’s a different story. When I took the group for a spin, the collective sigh of relief was almost orchestral. The ample space offered by the long wheelbase (that’s what the L stands for!) ensured everyone had their own oasis of comfort, with legroom that could rival a firstclass flight.
Step inside, and not only is there room for five people to travel at ease, you’re enveloped in an environment of supreme comfort and high-quality materials. The seats are plush, the wood inlays are exquisite, and the overall ambience exudes a calm, collected demeanour.
Under the bonnet, the A8L houses a turbocharged 340-horsepower V6 engine. It’s not the fastest in its class, but it doesn’t need to be. The A8L’s mission is stealth and serenity.
Whether you’re blasting down the highways or navigating the bustling inner city, the A8L delivers power smoothly and quietly. With all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in a respectable 5.7 seconds. Not lightning-fast, but quick enough to remind you that this luxury sedan can purr when it wants to.
When you have been a motoring journalist for many years and driven a lot of similar vehicles, you really notice the little things that set a certain model apart. The air vents, for instance, gracefully pop out from under a panel when the car is switched on and then retract when not in use, adding a touch of futuristic elegance to the cabin. The touch buttons for controlling the fan speed on these vents are a joy to use, offering a tactile response that’s both intuitive and satisfying. And let’s not forget the customisable light bars that surround the car and even around the seatbelt buckle, making those latenight drives all the more glamorous. Audi’s MMI Touch Response system, with its 10.1-inch upper and 8.6-inch lower centre
screens (for general infotainment and climate control respectively) keeps you connected and entertained. Yes, it can be a bit of a fingerprint magnet, but the quick response, high configurability and extremely satisfying haptic feedback make up for it. Standard features include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and the ever-impressive 12.3inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster. The Audi Connect Plus subscription adds a suite of apps for music, video, gaming, navigation and more, ensuring you’re never out of touch with the digital world.
The 2024 Audi A8L is more than just a car; it’s a statement of refined luxury and sophistication, with a flourish of touches to make it stand out in a competitive market. Audi Centre Bahrain, located in Sitra, is offering the A8 from a starting price of BD52,230, with monthly payments from BD625 available. In addition, Audi Centre Bahrain is currently covering the cost of VAT on its A8 series which is the best value in the Kingdom that you’ll find in this segment currently.

ABU DHABI TO HOST
SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON FINALE

After a highly successful pilot season in 2022, WSX built upon its foundations by expanding into new markets in 2023 – a campaign which saw German motorcycle superstar, Ken Roczen, claim a second WSX World Championship title while Britain’s Max Anstie etched his name on the SX2 World Championship crown.

MONEY, YOU, BUDGETS
and What Drives You
Continuing on the ‘Money and You’ theme, Pria Masson discusses how your motivations and fears affect your goals and decisions and how they relate to money.
I recently attended a very interesting workshop on digital marketing led by a digital marketing expert, Andrea Vasconcellos. The insights shared at this workshop made me recall the small and big stuff that goes into creating, building and promoting a business. It also got me thinking
about just how transferable these skills are to our personal and professional lives. With that as a background and in continuation of our ‘Money and You’ theme, this month, I discuss how your motivations and your fears affect your goals and decisions and how all this merges in with money.
Motivation
Let’s begin with the basic idea of motivation. It is what drives all our actions, whether consciously or sub-consciously. When you want to market a product, at a fundamental level, you need to address the core motivation of your audience. Let’s break it down to money.
On a personal level, that dress you really
Instagram poll
wanted, it is difficult to figure out if it is a need or a desire because you do need it for that new party you are going to. The aim of that dress, however, is what decides which bucket it sits in. If your motivation is to be noticed and being noticed allows you to build a specific connection, then it’s really an investment (however risky) and not a pure expense.
Here’s what we asked our followers this month:
Which is more likely to determine your business decisions regarding money?
On a business level, an extra boost of Instagram ads for example, could be an expense you need to make to get new business. However, if you dig deeper and analytics tell you that the ads may make you popular, but there is no conversation of clicks into sales, then, it’s really a “nice to have” and continuing, is an ego boost, not an investment.
Fears
The apparent opposite of motivation is fear. It’s what we want to avoid the most, and it is a tricky space to navigate. A not-so-surprising number of business and financial decisions are taken to “avoid ruin” or “ensure that doesn’t happen”. That’s acting from a space of fear. And, money, rather the loss of money, is a fear the majority of people have.
So, selling to pandering to that fear, can abate your own fear of not having enough. For example, just the idea of money, brings fear in so many minds. There is hesitation to understand it and often a lack of confidence to work with it. I read an interesting statistic that only 33 percent of adults globally, are financially literate and ‘too much jargon’ was cited as a reason for not investing1. That’s
fear of the unknown at play and resistance to engaging with it.
If you fear money, how would you approach it confidently? How would you engage with
If you understand your motivation and fears around money, it is the kryptonite or secret sauce that you need to supercharge your financial decisions. Marketers know these aspects of you more than you realise. It’s how social media directs their content to you. The key is, realising what is apparent in your own behaviour, only you have not seen it yet. When the picture appears, guiding yourself where you need (and want) to be, will be a much easier process. It gives you a map of how to support yourself, all you need to do is understand the language of the map.
it to make healthy financial decisions for your life or your business? Think about your fears around money, you may be surprised as to how pervasive that fear is in various decisions of your life.

FROM BAHRAIN TO BALLOTS
Heather Harper MBE is a former Bahrain resident who was a pioneer in the Gulf region’s broadcast media industry and one of the founding presenters of Bahrain 55 TV in the early 1980s.
She is currently Chairman of the Bahrain Society in the UK, part of a familyowned energy company with origins in Bahrain and is an active volunteer for the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom. She worked across the political divide in order to win the right of all longterm expatriates to vote in UK general elections – granting the largest electoral enfranchisement increase since women got the vote in 1928.
We asked her to share her thoughts on why and how she decided to get involved in political party volunteering.
When the General Election is over, hundreds of thousands of Party volunteers across the UK will be able to take a bit of time off for themselves to recover from their voluntary work; there will be celebration, disappointment, satisfaction, discontent and other emotions.
During an election, the local volunteers usually start by being asked to help stuff envelopes or deliver leaflets or letters throughout their community, challenging awkward letter boxes oft with a dog barking furiously the other side (a tip is to take a wooden spatula with you to poke the flyer through to protect your fingers!). You may be asked to knock on people’s doors and canvass or to hold events to raise much needed funds to campaign for the chosen candidate.
It is quite extraordinary seeing the way people of all political persuasions get into gear and up their ante of engagement on the voluntary level when deadlines and goals are set. First the anticipation and then the initial excitement when an election is called, not to mention learning the different sets of rules one has to follow during the election period.
The countless asks of friends and family who have to put up with your somewhat manic timetables especially in a short election. There may be local hustings to help organise and daily candidate support. There is though usually great camaraderie at the meet ups after an exhausting delivery day. Then after this 24/7 run up to election there is the actual election day with volunteers manning polling stations and quickly setting up campaign HQs to get the vote out. Volunteering for the Conservative Party began with a knock on the door shortly after I returned
from living in Bahrain. A smiling gentleman said, “Good morning, I’m one of your local councillors and wondered if you would like to get involved and join the local branch of our Conservative Association.” This was closely followed by “Could we hold an event at your home?” and “Would you join the committee?”. Being sociable, I agreed to all and… well, the rest is history and that was over thirty volunteering years ago.
I have since then volunteered my way from the grass routes through countless local and General Elections holding numerous positions on Branch, Women’s group, Association committees and as Constituency Chairman of Beaconsfield. Today, I am Chairman of Conservatives Abroad, a network of volunteer support throughout the world where campaigning is obviously different to the UK as delivered largely through social media.
The Conservative Party had long been supportive of its overseas citizens and inspired me to get the bit between my teeth and lobby the
politicians hard to scrap the 15-year rule of disenfranchisement. ‘Votes for Life’ was delivered in January this year in the Elections Bill 2022 giving all British citizens living overseas their right to vote in UK elections.
Conservatives Abroad volunteers also successfully campaigned to appoint a dedicated Minister to champion the specific issues of Britons living overseas which is in the Conservative Party manifesto.
Volunteering for me has covered a wide spectrum of interests including the Richings Players, Thames Valley Police, Crimestoppers, the Residents Associations, DrugFam, St.Peters and St Leonards church which have brought me into contact with so many volunteers that have truly enriched life in our community.
Many ask: “Why do you do this volunteering?”. It’s the belief in helping make the community better for all.
Woman of the Year Awards Launch
NURTURING TIES WITH BELGIUM
The Kingdom of Bahrain and Belgium have enjoyed diplomatic relations for over 40 years. Woman This Month met with the Honorary Consul for Belgium in Bahrain, Martine S. Kindt, who highlighted the ties between the two countries.
Ms. Kindt was appointed as the Honorary Consul for Belgium in Bahrain in March 2023 by Royal Decree in Belgium. “I felt it was a great honour to represent my country abroad and to be of service,” says Ms. Kindt.
Since the Honorary Consulate in Bahrain does not issue passports or visas, Ms. Kindt also guides Belgians to the relevant persons and services. “Bahrain falls under the competence of the Belgian Embassy in Kuwait and we have an excellent collaboration for various services,” she states.
“As Honorary Consul, my primary responsibility is to assist Belgians in need in Bahrain, be it a resident of the Kingdom or visitor,” she explains.
“Secondly, I support my non-resident Ambassador and assist him with all necessary matters, while my third duty is to represent Belgium to the best of my abilities here in Bahrain, at official events or any other matter.”
Trade relations between the two countries have grown consistently since the formal establishment of diplomatic relations on December 2, 1980.
“Bahrain is business-friendly which is quite encouraging and I am quite impressed with how well-represented Belgian products here. Belgium mainly exports heavy machinery and parts to Bahrain, with companies like Besix having a strong presence here. Diamonds are also an important part of the exports,” she states.
Several world-renowned food brands have been established in Belgium; these brands including mouth-watering Belgian chocolates such as Godiva and Guylian are widely distributed in the Kingdom. “Lotus Speculoos and plant-based products by Alpro are also popular apart from our famous Belgian beverages,” she says.
Building on these robust trade relations, Ms. Kindt has set her sights on assisting Belgian companies who have expressed an interest in creating lucrative partnerships or expanding their business to Bahrain. “I work with our Economic Attaché, HE Laurence Heyblomme, who is based in our Embassy in Kuwait. She is in charge of economic affairs, working with the Belgian Export Organisations (FIT, Awex, Hub) and I’m assisting her as much as possible. I’m proud to mention that we had a Belgian economic FinTech mission in October last year organised by our Belgian Embassy. Several prestigious Belgian companies visited Bahrain, Bahrain Bourse, Arcapita, etc and had a very positive experience,” she states.
Highlighting upcoming projects and collaborations, Ms. Kindt states: “The dynamic Bahraini Ambassador appointed to Brussels, HE Abdullah bin Faisal bin Jabr Al Doseri and I are exploring how we can enhance exchanges and cooperation, being at the level of technology, industry or even sports. I also visited Derasat in Bahrain and exchanged views on subjects such as education or green energies and was positively encouraged by the quality of the institution.”
On July 21, Belgium will celebrate its National Day with a military défilé, followed by fire works. “Our country is great at celebrating this day – every city hosts events, fireworks, activities and traditional food is available everywhere. In Bahrain, we celebrate on November 15, which is our Belgian King’s day. Of course, we encourage equally everybody to join us when our national football team is playing, such as the current Euro 2024,” she says. “Being in a wonderful host country, I aim to bring the best experience to both: my country and Bahrain,” she concludes.
IN THE FACE OF ADVERSITY THERE WILL ALWAYS BE FOOTBALL
In a region fraught with political turmoil and societal constraints, the Palestinian Women’s National Football Team has emerged as a symbol of resilience and inspiration. Under the leadership of manager Deema Youssef and captain Aya Khattab, the team navigates a path laden with challenges but driven by an unwavering commitment to the sport and their country. They spoke to Woman This Month to share their heroic story.
Ms. Youssef, a former player and captain for the team before becoming its dedicated manager, begins by revealing the difficulty it has functioning on the international stage. “Managing the team, especially in the current challenging environment, is a significant responsibility. It’s not as easy as it sounds,” she explains. “There are numerous obstacles we face, from facilitating matches and practices to ensuring the safety of our players. The community is not as open to women’s sports as we hope for it to be someday.”
Despite these hurdles, she finds immense satisfaction in her role. “It brings me so much joy to see the girls pursuing their dreams of playing football and representing Palestine. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do myself. Moving from being a team captain to this managerial role is very important for me personally.”
The team’s journey on the international stage began in 2008 with its first international match, which ended in a tie. “It was a historic moment for Palestinian women’s football,” Ms. Youssef reminisces. She was quick to emphasise the team’s ambitions to reach the
World Cup, highlighting the progressive steps the Palestinian Football Association is taking to achieve this goal. “We see how women’s football is reaching global stages nowadays, and we hope one day to be part of that. We are working step-by-step with a very young team, aged between 16 and 29.”
Ms. Khattab, the team captain, progressed with the national side through various age levels.
“I’ve been playing for the team for about 10 years now,” she explains. “As a young girl, I was inspired by the Brazilian legend Marta and I’ve tried to emulate her. I started with the under 14s, 16s and 18s, before becoming a regular player and now captain.”
Both women were keen to shine a light on the impact of ongoing political issues on the team’s training and preparation. “It’s really hard for us. We stopped all sporting events or competitions throughout the country since the start of the war,” Ms. Youssef noted.
“Getting the players together is a significant challenge due to checkpoints and border restrictions. Some training camps have as few as six players instead of the full team.”
The team faces severe logistical challenges,
with military presence and safety concerns affecting their operations and morale.
Despite these difficulties, the team’s spirit remains unbroken as it prepares for upcoming competitions, including the West Asia and Asian competitions next year.
“We are very resilient people,” Ms. Khattab asserts. “Even with all the challenges, we manage to continue. We have faced situations like tear gas being thrown at us during a match, but we push through.”
The team also strives to connect internationally, recently playing a match against a local team in Ireland, Bohemians, and it had a significant impact. “We are open to any opportunity to play internationally, as it represents more than just competition for us; it’s about being seen and heard,” Ms. Youssef argues proudly. “We encourage international teams to reach out, so we can continue to foster hope and showcase our unyielding spirit.”

- Made for MemoriesDOWNTOWN ROTANA
Farah Baig discovers the hospitality jewel in the heart of Manama that is Downtown Rotana. She tells all about her day of rest, relaxation and indulgence that tops the list of her staycation experiences.
“I really could use a break.” Friends, family and every willing listener have probably heard me say this a hundred times over the last few months. The reality of being an adult means that you really can’t drop your responsibilities and head to the airport whenever you feel like it. Lucky for me, my summer was off to a good start with a staycation at the beautiful 5-star property Downtown Rotana.
THE EPITOME OF COMFORT
As I drove up to the hotel, I was greeted by the valet attendants who happily assisted with parking my car and taking my suitcase to the lobby. Walking through the revolving doors of the property is like taking a deep breath of fresh Alpine air – the lobby is modern and features the creative art of Bahrain-based artists that the hotel supports through their Culture Hub initiative. Unlike most hotels, check-in was simple and quick, a pleasant experience heightened by the kind receptionist who cheerfully walked me through the hotel’s many amenities, restaurants and unique experiences. Could I really be in store for so much enjoyment in just a day?
Walking into my corner room on the 18th floor, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement; it was welcoming to say the least. The room was tastefully decorated and featured a dining table, sofas, a TV and a king-size bed in the corner and that wasn’t all. As I drew the curtains open, I was blown away by the view of the Bahrain Financial Harbour from one window and Bahrain World Trade Centre from the other – a view that I revisited several times during the experience. The room also boasts a large bathtub, a rain shower, his-and-her sinks, and The White Company toiletries offering a comfortable stay for all.

TEA, SUSHI AND SOME RELAXATION
After freshening up, I made my way to Club Rotana for the Afternoon Tea Experience, which is available to hotel guests and visitors alike. The lounge offers beautiful views of the city, but what really took the cake (no pun intended!) was the spread of delicious sandwiches, pastries, cakes, scones and hot pot of tea. Each was meticulously crafted to suit every palate so the experience created the perfect venue to catch up with friends or family.
DOWNTOWN ROTANA BY DAY
Day one was off to an incredible start, but rest and relaxation was in order. I made my way to my room where I watched the sunset beyond the iconic harbour as I relaxed on the supremely comfortable bed. For dinner, I made my way to the hotel’s beautiful Teatro restaurant where I was joined by some guests. It’s worth mentioning that Teatro offers some exciting experiences across a range of cuisines including a Mexican Night, Le Petit Chef gourmet dinner show, and Sushi Night that I was here for.
The Sushi Night experience offers guests the opportunity to indulge in some of the very best sushi. After relishing some Miso soup and assorted dumplings we were presented with a colourful sushi platter. We were thoroughly impressed with the assortment which included sashimi, nigiri and maki rolls that incorporates the best of seafood. This was followed by a dessert platter laden with fresh fruit, delectable mochi and more.
After dining on this phenomenal feast, and taking a breather, I couldn’t resist making my way to the pool on the ninth floor which closes at 11pm. The serenity of taking a dip in a cool, temperaturecontrolled pool while soaking in the views of Manama by night added its own appeal to this relaxing staycation.
Back at the room I indulged in some of the room’s amenities, including a delicious box of Maya chocolates, before turning in for the night. Needless to say, I had a great night’s sleep and felt thoroughly rejuvenated – what a great way to spend some time off!
I never fully appreciated just how incredible Manama was till I admired it from this pristine corner room – landmarks, the bustling traffic and blue sea in the distance was breathtaking. But as much as I would love to sit around and enjoy the room, the hotel had so much to offer. So, I made my way to Flavours on 2 for breakfast. The charming restaurant, made even better by the friendly staff, has everything you could possibly need for a delicious breakfast.
At the egg station I ordered a mushroom and cheese omelette before requesting watermelon juice and a freshly brewed cappuccino at the table. The best of breakfast foods including waffles, fresh pastries, cornflakes, sausages, baked beans, spread and cheese are available in addition to local favourites such as Balila, Harees, Shakshouka and more. I appreciated the fact that unlike most buffet breakfasts, every item was fresh and served at the right temperature. Whether you’re looking for indulgent or healthy options, you can find it all here.
A few hours later I made my way back to the ninth floor, this time to Bodylines for a massage. Bodylines boasts two massage rooms, a jacuzzi, steam and sauna rooms and, more importantly, a range of relaxing treatments to choose from including the Balinese Massage, Traditional Thai Massage, Swedish Massage and Deep Hot Stone Experience. My masseuse led me to one of the massage rooms where I was to have a Swedish Massage. The room is incredibly serene with soft music playing in the background, candlelight and a pleasant aroma. For a rejuvenating hour she expertly kneaded away knots and muscle tension – the positive effects for which I felt for days and weeks. This will likely be a regular feature for me to relieve some tension after every deadline.
A GREAT END TO A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE
It wasn’t easy pulling myself away from that beautiful corner room, but my staycation had come to an end. After packing my bag, I had a quick and seamless checkout, but chose to enjoy one last Downtown Rotana dining experience before leaving – Indian Night.
Back at Flavours on 2, I explored the spread which included Indian staples such as Butter Chicken, Rogan Ghosh, Gulab Jamun, biriyani and freshly made naan. We started the experience with some unique salads before tucking into the curries which were brimming with the delightful flavour of spices. I thoroughly enjoyed the chaat corner too, which featured favourites such as Pani Puri and Dahi Sev Batata Puri. This, and other dining experiences at Downtown Rotana, are not to be missed by food connoisseurs. Be sure to call ahead to check for daily specials and make a reservation!
Leaving the hotel, I had the pleasant realisation that you really don’t need to leave the island when you need to reset or refocus; all the rest and rejuvenation you need can be found right here at Downtown Rotana.
Teens andImageBody
Struggling with one’s body image is something we can all relate to. It’s something that is better dealt with when the right fundamentals are put in place as teens when we first notice changes. Ouiam El Hassani tells you how to help your teen have a healthy body image.
Picture day dread. Social media envy. Corridors and hallways anxieties. Welcome to the wild world of teen body image! As a parent, witnessing your teen navigate this often-challenging terrain can feel overwhelming. Fear not! This journey can be a collaborative effort and you can be a powerful ally in helping your teen build rock-solid confidence. Teens today face a relentless barrage of unrealistic beauty standards. Social media acts as a funhouse mirror, reflecting distorted images of “perfection” through filtered photos and curated online personas. The constant comparison to these unattainable ideals can chip away at their selfesteem, creating a sense of inadequacy and insecurity. The desire to fit in adds another layer of complexity. Peer pressure can lead teens to believe in a narrow definition of beauty and teasing or bullying based on appearance can be a major confidence crusher. Then comes puberty which throws a wrench into everything. Rapid physical changes can feel confusing and overwhelming, especially when combined with societal expectations about what a “normal” body should look like.
Social media acts as a funhouse mirror, reflecting distorted images of “perfection” through filtered photos and curated online personas.
So, how can you spot red flags that your teen might be struggling? While some self-consciousness is a normal part of adolescence, be mindful of signs that might indicate a deeper issue. Is your teen constantly checking mirrors, weighing themselves daily, or fixated on negative self-talk about their body? Are they drastically changing their eating habits, skipping meals or exercising excessively in a way that seems unhealthy? Have they become less social, avoiding activities where their bodies are on display? Are they expressing feelings of isolation or depression?
The good news is, there are many ways you can empower your teen to conquer the confidence course of body image. Start by being a body positive champion. Teens are keen observers, picking up on how you talk about yourself. Avoid negative self-talk and focus on health and well-being, not just weight. Show them that you value your own body for its capabilities and what it allows you to do, not just how it looks.
Shift the focus to celebrate your teen’s achievements and strengths that go beyond appearance. Highlight their talents, skills and personality traits. Let them know you’re proud of them for winning the debate team competition, not just for the way they look in their new outfit. Puberty is a natural process, not a reason for shame. Talk openly about physical changes and answer questions honestly without judgment. Normalise these changes by discussing them as a normal part of growing up.

Help your teen see the beauty in diversity. Seek out media that showcases all body types and challenge unrealistic beauty standards by praising real, diverse representation. Expose them to movies, shows and magazines that feature characters of all shapes and sizes. Promote healthy eating habits and regular exercise for overall well-being, not just weight control. This will help them develop a positive relationship with food and movement. Focus on the importance of nourishing their bodies with healthy foods to fuel their activities and promote overall health, not just achieving a certain number on the scale.
The most important tip is to create a safe space for open communication. Listen actively without judgment and reassure your teen of your unwavering support. Let them know they can express their feelings and concerns freely. If they’re struggling with their body image, don’t dismiss their worries. Validate their feelings and encourage them to talk openly about what’s bothering them. If they’re hesitant to talk to you, encourage them to seek professional help from a therapist or counselor specialising in adolescent development. A therapist can provide them with
a safe space to explore their feelings and develop healthy coping mechanisms. Remember, this is a team effort. By fostering open communication, equipping your teen with self-acceptance, and cheering them on every step of the way, you can help them conquer the confidence course of body image and emerge with a healthy selfesteem that shines brighter than any filtered picture. They may still face challenges, but with your support, they’ll have the tools they need to navigate the complexities of body image and build a strong sense of self. This journey won’t be a sprint, but a marathon, and your presence as a supportive and understanding parent will make all the difference.

THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF BALLET
Valerie Fourrier’s story is a testament to the enduring power of passion and the importance of balancing one’s dreams with life’s practical demands. She tells Edwin D’Souza about her journey through ballet and diplomacy, and a life that’s been enriched by cultural experiences and unwavering dedication.
Valerie Fourrier’s journey into ballet began serendipitously at the tender age of five. Initially aspiring to be a cheerleader, she found her path redirected when her mother took her to a cheerleading school that only accepted children over 14. Disappointed but undeterred, their walk home led them past an opera house in France, where a poster advertised ballet classes for young children.
“I had no idea what ballet was,” she recalls. “But it quickly became a significant part of my life, with my parents often using it as motivation for good behaviour.”
Despite her passion for the art form, Valerie’s aspirations to become a professional ballerina were not fully realised due to her parents’ insistence on pursuing a more conventional career and encouragement to maintain it as a hobby instead. Reflecting on this, Valerie acknowledges: “I think they saved me from being in this very competitive world, as I am not someone who is very competitive. I also believe my physique might have presented limitations in a professional ballet career.”
Valerie’s professional life was demanding, having served as a Navy officer and spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This career required her to travel extensively and work closely with high-level officials, leaving little time for ballet. Upon retiring from her diplomatic career in her forties, she immersed herself in ballet once again, attending classes daily. Other dance forms she explored include contemporary, jazz and neoclassical styles, but classical ballet remained her core passion. “It was in my DNA,” she says.
Her experience with dance in Bahrain has been limited, though she did participate in a music video shortly – a fun experience which she recalls fondly.
Yet, living in Bahrain has also significantly impacted Valerie, particularly through cultural experiences such as participating in International Dance Day. She cherishes these events, which she describes as “dreamlike” and appreciates the opportunity to present her book on ballet and discuss dance as a universal language. “Bahrain epitomises
tolerance and coexistence, values which I believe the world can learn from, and so I plan to write a book about the Kingdom to highlight these virtues,” she states.
Valerie now intends to focus on promoting ballet and its values, such as discipline and perseverance. She also mentors young dancers and recounts the experience of mentoring a 13-year-old girl whose body type didn’t fit the Paris Opera Ballet’s standards. “I helped her find schools in the US and Canada, eventually leading to her acceptance at the renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York. I wish I could do more of that – help people and bring a new light to this dance form,” she says.
Looking forward, Valerie is eager to continue her projects, including publishing her third book and writing about Bahrain. She remains committed to her passion for ballet and encourages others to persist in their dreams. ‘Never give up on your dreams and always work hard. Even if things are hard, the reward will be greater,” she concludes.

What’s the most uplifting quote you have ever come across?
I’d rather say a “philosophy” that always keeps me motivated and uplifts my spirit: Life is 99 percent our making. I believe this is so true! The way we deal with things, how we choose to see our reality, the perspectives that we adopt, our way of thinking and our habits are all 100 percent under our control and only 1 percent is what life brings to us.
Friday brunch or latenight dinners?
I’m not a person of routine, hence you can really find me with both clubs, a morning bird and a night owl.
Do you have any pets?
I love animals though I don’t have any for the simple reason of not wanting to commit to taking daily care of them, and it would be so selfish to have one just because I’d feel lonely sometimes. If I could, I’d love to have tiny pets like cats or a teacup dog.
InHerShoes
This month we met with Kawthar Lanbari, the Director of Sales at Crowne Plaza Bahrain, an IHG Hotel. She is a woman who is inspired and inspires. Let’s take a walk in her shoes!
Do you have any hidden talents?
I love all kinds of art which are all forms of self-expression. I do abstract painting, from time to time, I bake and I love styling outfits!
Who do you consider to be your role model?
The Guru of Corporate Leadership, Simon Sinek, and the most impactful spiritual teacher I’ve listened to, Sadhguru, are two that inspire me. However true inspiration for me comes from people in our reality. There is one person that I consider my role model who is the closest person to me and my mentor for several years, who introduced me to many life-changing concepts and equipped me with the best possible tools to succeed, continuously and generously. This person is a true warrior and sets the example of success, leadership, discipline, fitness, self-development and emotional intelligence that I would like to reach one day.
What is your dream holiday destination?
I love tropical places like Bali and Hawaii as I love the happy vibes of the sun, beach and sands. However, I’m planning to spend a couple of days in a caravan and enjoy waking up to the beauty of Europe’s mountains.
A long-term goal of yours is:
I do have professional goals, personal goals and leadership goals. However, whatever the formula is, I’d love to remain optimistic no matter what. To me, life is all about that journey and not about the goal, and I really try to maintain that infinite mind-set in all aspects of my life.
