As the summer heat begins to really take hold and the Kingdom transitions into June, Bahrain This Month extends a heartfelt greeting to our readers. Following the successful conclusion of the historical 33rd Arab Summit hosted in Bahrain for the very first time, we reflect on the remarkable insights and collaborations fostered during this prestigious event. I was incredibly honoured to receive accreditation to the media centre and in this issue, I share my thoughts on its significance and its impact on the region's future.
This month, we celebrate Father's Day by highlighting the profound impact fathers have on our lives. We take this opportune moment to reflect on the role of fatherhood in shaping individuals and families, offering a touching tribute to all the dads out there. Diplomacy once again takes centre stage as we commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Bahrain and Bangladesh. Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Bangladesh, Mr. A.K.M. Mohiuddin Kayes, sat down with BTM to discuss the steadfast bonds and cooperation that have defined the past five decades, and what lies ahead for our two nations.
We also spotlight Brent Cataneo-Amad, a young Filipino piano virtuoso who is set to dazzle audiences at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York with his extraordinary talent. Brent’s journey is an inspiring tale of passion and dedication, and one we are delighted to share with our readers.
In hospitality, we feature Thibault de Vries, who shares insights into his illustrious career and the exciting developments at the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain. Similarly, Farah Baig spoke with Branimir ‘Bane’ Radosavljevic, General Manager of SUSHISAMBA Bahrain, to learn more about the buzz surrounding this innovative dining destination at the Conrad Bahrain Financial Harbour. We also discovered Salman Hubail’s inspiring journey from a security officer to the esteemed Director of Safety and Security at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa.
We have our usual suite of listings highlighting the best of Bahrain’s entertainment and dining options, our look at the latest media filling your TV screens, phones and ears in Downtime, and our review of the best new chic place in town, Café Gourmandise at the Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain.
Our motoring section this month has two special highlights; Kristian Harrison’s spectacular trip to Stuttgart, Germany with Porsche for the launch of the new Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid, and Edwin D’Souza’s electrifying test drive of the Mercedes EQE 350+, a futuristic electric sedan.
Our guest columnist, Pria Masson, guides us through the art of budgeting, building on the concept of balance discussed in last month’s column to aid you in managing finances effectively.
You may notice that I haven’t mentioned Woman This Month yet… and that’s because this month it has its own standalone issue packed full of amazing content including the big reveal related to our Woman of The Year Awards programme in December 2024 that I will leave you to discover in Woman This Month’s June edition!
As always, Bahrain This Month is more than just a magazine. Stay connected with our vibrant community on our website, social media and more as we continue to be Your Guide to a Great Way of Life.

A SEA OF FLAGS AND TENSE ANTICIPATION
INSIDE THE ARAB LEAGUE SUMMIT IN BAHRAIN
Red House Marketing Chairman and Bahrain This Month Publisher, George Middleton, shares his thoughts following the conclusion of the 33rd Arab Summit hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on May 16.
The air crackled with an electric mix of anticipation and apprehension as I arrived at the media centre based at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa which had direct tele-links with Al Sakhir Palace where the 33rd Arab League Summit took place in the middle of May 2024.
Leaders from across the Arab world, with an urgent commitment, gathered for a crucial meeting against a backdrop of ongoing regional tensions and the ever-present Palestinian issue.
The summit’s theme, “Arab Unity and Cooperation: A Pathway to a Secure and Prosperous Future,” hung heavily in the air. Optimistic pronouncements of solidarity echoed through the halls, but still, one could sense the weight of current challenges in the pursuit of peace and justice.
Bahrain can translate its aspirations into tangible results. However, the gathering served as a potent reminder that the future of the Arab world lies in collaborative efforts to overcome current challenges and foster a more secure and prosperous region.
The most significant takeaway was the renewed focus on the Palestinian question. Frustration with the stalled peace process ran high.
Leaders unanimously called for a UN-backed international peace conference on Palestinian statehood, urging the UN Security Council to revisit its recent resolution.
It was a pleasure to witness the successful organisation of the summit under the direct auspices of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa as they went to great pains to emphasise the need for regional cooperation in crucial sectors.
Healthcare collaboration garnered considerable
interest, with discussions focusing on establishing a unified strategy to address the ongoing struggles of war-torn areas. This resonated deeply with delegates from countries grappling with refugee crises and internal conflicts. Additionally, the summit saw a push for joint Arab initiatives in the burgeoning field of financial technology, aiming to leverage the region’s vast potential in this domain.
While the summit concluded with affirmations of Arab solidarity, the road ahead remains uncertain. The success of the proposed international peace conference for Palestine hangs in the balance of overcoming internal divisions and crafting a unified Arab strategy. Additionally, translating the rhetoric of economic cooperation into concrete action will require overcoming decades old rivalries in a new era of trust and cooperation amongst the member states.
Only time will tell if the Arab League Summit in
For me, the experience of having been media accredited to one of the most august and impactful political gatherings of our time, was an absolute honour and privilege. It also filled me with immense pride to be able to witness the Kingdom of Bahrain’s successful planning and implementation of such a major international convocation so seamlessly and efficiently.
As well as witnessing the events taking place at the Arab League Summit at Sakhir Palace via a direct teleconference link, we were able to participate in a press conference physically attended by Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, HE Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, together with Ahmed Aboul Gheit the Secretary-General of the Arab League. Almost every journalist in the room had their hand raised although most, like me, were unsuccessful in their quest to question the leaders present due to the sheer numbers involved.
I am glad for the experience and look forward to future opportunities to participate in similar events orchestrated by the National Communication Centre and The Ministry of Information in the Kingdom of Bahrain.

HIGHLIGHTING 50 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS
The Golden Jubilee of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Bahrain will be celebrated on June 6. To mark this momentous occasion, Kristian Harrison sat down with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Bangladesh, Mr. A.K.M. Mohiuddin Kayes, and discussed the last 50 years of co-operation whilst looking ahead to strengthening steadfast bonds in the coming years.
What is the history of cooperation between Bangladesh and Bahrain, and what are the key areas of this relationship?
Bahrain was the first GCC country to establish diplomatic relations with Bangladesh on June 6, 1974 shortly after a meeting between the late Emir of Bahrain, Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman during the 1974 OIC Summit. The two brotherly nations are continuing to maintain excellent ties based on mutual trust and shared values under the able leadership of our Honourable Prime Minister, HE Sheikh Hasina and HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
The key areas of our cooperation are manpower, trade and commerce, agriculture, civil aviation, culture, people-to-people contact and more.
How does the Bangladesh Embassy in Bahrain support the Bangladeshi diaspora residing in Bahrain?
Since the Embassy’s establishment in 1983, we have been providing various consular as well as labourwelfare related services to the Bangladeshi nationals residing in the Kingdom in addition to seeking ways to further strengthen our diplomatic and economic ties with Bahrain.
Most recently, during my tenure, we introduced free medical treatment services and more than 10,000 Bangladeshis benefited from this service so far. We also started providing free weekly legal consultations with Bahraini lawyers to ensure our citizens’ safety and rights. Moreover, we periodically organise mobile consular camps to make our services more accessible to our people, and we also began organising awareness-raising seminars in collaboration with various local ministries.
I am also very happy to announce that we have commenced the construction of a Bangladesh School building in A’ali under the name of our Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to provide quality education at an affordable price. Here, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation to HM King Hamad for graciously donating the school plot and we also convey our heartfelt gratitude to HE Sheikh Hasina for funding the school building construction project.
interview 18 June 2024 Bahrainthismonth.com
What initiatives or programmes does the Embassy undertake to promote cultural exchange and understanding between Bangladesh and Bahrain?
We are constantly seeking new avenues to strengthen cultural ties. We have arranged several photography and art exhibitions throughout the Kingdom in collaboration with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, National Council for Arts, and various art galleries in Bahrain. We also screened a biographical film of our Father of the Nation named Mujib: The Making of a Nation in a renowned cinema hall last year, where around 250 people, comprising nearly 100 foreign dignitaries, enjoyed the film.
Most recently, in April, we celebrated Bangla New Year 1431 in a joyous atmosphere, where foreign dignitaries and other guests enjoyed our delicious Bangladeshi cuisine and our mesmerising cultural performances. Over the years, we have also partnered with the UN Bahrain team and all private schools in Bahrain to observe the International Mother Language Day on February 21 in a befitting manner. This year, we exhibited over 90 artworks drawn by schoolchildren from all over Bahrain.
Furthermore, we actively take part in various fairs throughout the year, particularly the International Embassy Bazaar, to showcase our traditional Bangladeshi products like jamdhani sarees, jute items, leather goods and teas.
We are also working towards promoting the culture of Bahrain in Bangladesh as evidenced by our Visit Bangladesh programme, where several Bahraini journalists and other media personnel are provided with complimentary trips to Bangladesh to further bolster our commitment to enhancing cultural exchange.
What is the current estimate for the Bangladeshi population in Bahrain and in what ways does Bangladesh contribute to the workforce and economy of Bahrain?
Approximately 150,000 Bangladeshis are living in Bahrain today, which makes us the second largest expat community in Bahrain. We have doctors, professors and engineers who are working at renowned hospitals, universities and other institutions. Some also own small and medium enterprises, including shops, restaurants, agencies and other private establishments. Of course, a majority of Bangladeshis here have blue collar jobs, particularly in the construction sector.
The workforce and economy of Bahrain are being greatly benefited from skilled Bangladeshi expatriates. Our people have contributed immensely to the infrastructure of Bahrain and we are well regarded as very hardworking and trustworthy individuals.
Could you provide insights into any recent agreements or collaborations between Bangladesh and Bahrain?
We signed three important bilateral instruments in 2015. One is related to avoidance of double taxation; another is the promotion and reciprocal protection of investments; and the third one is Foreign Office Consultation, the first of which was held in 2022. Additionally, a few agreements and MoUs are currently in the pipeline to be signed in the next round of FOC in Dhaka and a number of high-level meetings between delegations have taken place.
What are the current challenges or opportunities in enhancing bilateral relations, and how does the Embassy address them?
Currently we are facing a challenge in getting necessary visas for Bangladeshis. However, the Embassy is pursuing a process to ease the obtaining of visas as we aim to encourage trade, business, investment, tourism and cultural exchange. We are also working towards having more high-level visits between the two nations, as we think this would foster stronger political, economic and cultural ties.
Can you share any upcoming events or initiatives organised by the Embassy?
We are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic relations with Bahrain in a grand fashion at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence & Spa. On this auspicious occasion, we will unveil a special logo of our golden jubilee in collaboration with the Bahraini side. We have already secured the messages from our Honourable Prime Minister and our Honourable Foreign Minister on this great occasion. In addition to this, we are planning to organise more awareness-raising seminars and trade fairs to strengthen our existing ties.
How does the Embassy contribute to promoting tourism and investment opportunities in Bangladesh to Bahraini citizens and businesses?
I met with the Minister of Industry and Commerce of Bahrain, HE Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro just last month, and he showed his keen interest for having more trade and investment opportunities between Bangladesh and Bahrain, particularly in the sectors of pharmaceuticals, ICT, green energy, agricultural and frozen products, ready-made garments, textiles, ceramics, jute products and leather goods.
I am positive that once the visa issuance process for Bangladeshi nationals becomes much easier, the tourism and investment sectors of both countries will see an exponential increase. Our country is renowned for the longest natural sea beach in the world, Cox’s Bazar; the world’s largest mangrove forest, Sundarbans; eye-catching tea gardens in Sylhet; the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and our numerous scenic rivers which attract a large crowd of tourists each year.
Do you have anything more to add?
I would like to take this opportunity to thank HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the friendly people of Bahrain for their warm hospitality and creating a supportive environment to our expat community.
To my fellow Bangladeshis in Bahrain, I would like to urge you all to uphold the positive image of our country by following the rules and regulations of Bahrain. Finally, I would like to thank the Bahrain This Month team for interviewing me for the latest edition of this wonderful magazine.
May the friendship between Bangladesh and Bahrain live long!

The US Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain organised the seventh edition of the annual US Alumni Networking Event with guest speakers Minister of Industry and Commerce, HE Abdullah bin Adel Fakhro, US Ambassador, HE Steven C. Bondy and the President of AmCham Qays Zu’bi.

TALKING HOSPITALITY
Nestled along the pristine coastline of south-west Bahrain, the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain is rapidly becoming a beacon of luxury and innovation in the region’s hospitality sector. At the helm of this opulent establishment is Thibault de Vries, a seasoned professional whose extensive international experience and passion for hospitality has positioned him to lead this remarkable property. In an interview with Kristian Harrison, Mr. de Vries shares insights into his illustrious career, the exciting developments at the hotel, and his vision for the future of the resort.
Couldyou give our readers a brief history on your illustrious career and professional experience to date?
I began my career in Switzerland after graduating from EHL Hospitality Business School in Lausanne in 2005. Joining the Hyatt Hotels, I travelled extensively; working in Singapore, Bangkok, Paris and Johannesburg. I spent almost a decade in Russia, with assignments in Moscow and Sochi, the latter during its hosting of the 2014 Olympic Games. More recently, I moved to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup and, as of last December, I’m privileged to be the General Manager of the Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain.
How has your international experience contributed to shaping your career and expertise?
Adaptability is key. Working in diverse countries has taught me to quickly adapt to new cultures and ways of doing things. Each region has imparted valuable lessons that I bring to my role in Bahrain. This global perspective helps me understand and meet the varied expectations of our international guests.
What do you consider to be your greatest achievements in the field of hospitality to date?
I wouldn’t say there’s one single achievement that stands out. Across the various hotels and properties I’ve worked at, we’ve consistently enhanced the guest experience and improved the financial health of the establishments. A significant personal achievement is maintaining lasting relationships with colleagues and guests from my previous roles. This

interview
network of connections has enriched my career immensely.
As the General Manager of Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain, what do you consider to be your primary goals?
Initially, our focus is on building a dedicated and motivated team. It’s through our colleagues that we can deliver exceptional guest experiences. We’re also working on creating unique guest experiences, or what I like to call ‘wow moments,’ that go beyond expectations. Another goal is to activate more activities within the hotel to ensure guests have a comprehensive and engaging resort experience, given our distance from Manama.
How important is having a diverse and dynamic team in your operations?
Diversity is crucial. We purposefully seek a mix of backgrounds, genders, nationalities and experiences. For me, hiring is about attitude, motivation and passion. Skills can be trained, but a positive attitude and a sense of humour are essential. Being aware of global events is also important, as it helps our staff connect with international and knowledgeable guests.
The property recently unveiled its new brand identity. What are the key elements of growth that the property will undergo as it takes on this new venture?
The Jumeirah brand has always been about warmth, which is reflected in our updated logo featuring three flames symbolising generosity, joy and warmth. We aim to bring these elements to life in all guest interactions. Over the next few months and years, we’ll be focusing on how we can infuse these values into every aspect of our guest experience, from check-in procedures to dining experiences.
What are your thoughts on the hospitality sector in Bahrain? How does this property diversify in a competitive environment?
Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain is uniquely positioned as a true resort destination on the island. Unlike any other property here, we offer a complete disconnection from the hustle of Manama, creating a bubble of relaxation and luxury. Our extensive facilities, including multiple swimming pools, a private beach, an award-winning 2.5km2 spa, and diverse dining options, set us apart. We’re also the latest five-star luxury hotel in Bahrain, offering unparalleled experiences.
The property recently launched the Mar Y Mas concept. What makes the experience so special and what can visitors expect in terms of entertainment and dining?
Mar Y Mas is an adult-only experience at our infinity pool, available every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It features a live DJ from 2pm, a mix of Peruvian and Mexican cuisine bringing together vibrant flavours from both cultures, and evening fire shows. This concept is designed to provide a unique and vibrant atmosphere for our adult guests, offering a distinct and engaging experience.
Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain has a stunning beach and sprawling pools. What can the people of Bahrain and visitors expect at the property over summer as temperatures rise?
All our swimming pools are temperaturecontrolled, ensuring a refreshing dip even in the hottest weather. Additionally, our location on the south-west coast means we benefit from a cool sea breeze, making the temperatures feel more pleasant. Our 800m beach also provides a great escape, and we continuously offer a variety of activities to keep guests entertained and comfortable during the summer.
After achieving great success in the hospitality sector, what do you consider to be essential personality traits for being successful in the field and what advice would you offer to prospective professionals?
Flexibility, open-mindedness and the ability to adapt quickly are essential traits. Empathy is crucial as we constantly interact with people. Passion for hospitality is also key; without it,
the long hours and demanding nature of the job can be challenging.
For young professionals, I recommend gaining a thorough understanding of hotel operations, starting from the ground up, and learning how different departments work together to create a seamless guest experience. Resilience and the ability to stay motivated are also important, some guests can be quite demanding.
When your tenure here eventually ends, what do you want your legacy at the property to have been?
I’m focused on creating an iconic resort experience here in Bahrain along with my amazing team. Our goal is to establish Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain as a premier destination in the GCC, known for its exceptional facilities and guest experiences. We’re continuously working on improving and innovating to achieve this vision.

BEING EVER VIGILANT
Salman Hubail, a seasoned hotel security professional from Bahrain, has dedicated 28 years to ensuring the safety and security of guests and staff at The Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel, Residence and Spa. He tells Kristian Harrison about his deep-seated passion for safeguarding others and his career path from security officer to the esteemed Director of Safety and Security.
“Initially, I was drawn to a career in hotel security due to my passion for ensuring the safety and well-being of guests and staff,” Mr. Hubail reflects. Over the years, his responsibilities have grown significantly, now overseeing a dedicated team and implementing advanced security measures to maintain a safe environment.
Working in security presents a number of unique challenges, and Mr. Hubail highlights that the most difficult one is the delicate balance between maintaining stringent security measures and fostering a welcoming atmosphere. “Ensuring safety and security in a hotel setting involves managing access control, monitoring public areas and safeguarding guest information,” he explains. “Hotels must navigate the fine line between creating a hospitable environment and enforcing security protocols, which includes staff training, emergency preparedness and advanced surveillance systems.”
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Hubail faced numerous challenges. However, he and his well-prepared security team were able to navigate these obstacles successfully. His effective crisis management skills, developed through years of experience, enabled him to calmly and effectively guide the hotel through these challenges. His level-headed decisionmaking and ability to quickly mobilise the right resources allowed the hotel to emerge from each challenge stronger than before.
Balancing security with guest comfort is a cornerstone of Mr. Hubail’s approach. “We ensure guests feel secure through clear communication, visible yet unobtrusive security presence and regular staff training. Additionally, creating a warm atmosphere with friendly interactions and comfortable amenities helps guests feel at ease,” he says. After nearly three decades, he has undoubtedly witnessed significant advancements in hotel security technology and practices. Looking back at when he started compared to now, his insight proves enlightening. “Key developments include the integration of smart locks, enhanced surveillance systems with AI capabilities and the implementation of mobile key access. Cybersecurity is a huge part of the job now, just
as much as the physical aspects,” he explains. Of course, the team never stops working to stay ahead of potential security threats, Mr. Hubail and his team implement a range of proactive measures. These include 24/7 surveillance, regular security audits, comprehensive staff training programmes and collaboration with local law enforcement. Advanced technology also plays a crucial role in their strategy, mostly for access control and emergency response protocols.
For aspiring security professionals in the hospitality industry, Mr. Hubail offers valuable advice. “Stay vigilant; always be aware of your surroundings and potential threats. Balance security duties with excellent customer service, keep up with the latest security technologies and protocols, and work closely with other departments to ensure overall safety
and regularly participate in drills and update emergency plans,” he advises.
Mr. Hubail’s extensive experience and dedication to hotel security make him a respected figure in the hospitality industry and as he continues to lead with vigilance and care, his contributions serve as a benchmark for professionals in the field.
He also expressed his deep appreciation for the Radisson Hotel Group, crediting them for providing the necessary training courses and professional development opportunities that have played a big role in helping him reach his current level of expertise and success. Additionally, he acknowledged the invaluable support he has received from the National Hotels Company throughout his career journey, stating that their backing has been crucial to his growth within the hospitality industry.

A YOUNG PIANO VIRTUOSO
Having noticed his great memory, advanced mathematical abilities and advanced sense of rhythm, Brent’s mother encouraged him to take piano lessons when he was just six years old. “I had actually bought him a piano two years prior, but his piano teacher suggested giving him time to mature, as lessons require more focus and concentration,” she says.
By the time he was five, he started drum lessons but preferred learning with his mother around. Gradually, Brent started to get into the rhythm. “However, the pandemic forced schools to close, so I encouraged him to start piano lessons at home,” she explains.
To balance his academics and extracurricular activities, Brent followed a routine which included online lessons, playtime and practice sessions. She also instructed his piano teacher to teach him more challenging pieces, despite which, Brent performed admirably academically, receiving A+ grades and awards.
By the time he was seven, Brent passed the Trinity College of London Grade 1 piano exam with a ‘Distinction’. He even learned 13 songs for his 7th birthday live piano recital, including the compositions of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Fur Elise and Scott Joplin’s The Entertainer
Brent Cataneo-Amad, a nine-year-old Filipino, is set to dazzle audiences at the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York with his extraordinary talent. Edwin D’Souza speaks to the young boy and his mother, Aileen, ahead of the milestone performance.
Now, his remarkable dedication and skills have earned him a spot on one of the world’s most prestigious stages where he will be showcasing his ability to master complex classical compositions. “Having taken home two prizes from his first international competition at the World Classical Music Awards in Europe, he entered the London Young Musician competition, where he fortunately earned bronze once more. He also participated in the Gulf Musician Idol 2022, where he bagged the Gold Medal despite the fact that his rivals were a few years older,” she explains.
Having grown more comfortable competing internationally, in November 2023, Brent attempted to enter the American Protégé International Music Competition. “Late last year we learned that he had won and that one of his prizes was an invitation to perform at the Carnegie Hall,” she says happily.
“We were stunned by the opportunity to play at the iconic venue since it’s one of the most prominent competitions in the USA, drawing a big field of young prodigies and competitors from over 70 countries. We are so delighted; it’s beyond our imagination!” says the proud mother.
Brent has chosen to play Rondo Alla Turca composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, because of the pace and his love for the
song. He has persevered to master the piece over the last year and, despite the challenge, had to learn quickly to meet the deadline for the upcoming competition.
Discipline, values and good behaviour have proved to be cornerstones in Brent’s upbringing. In fact, while his mother considers piano lessons and academics to be essential, she believes allowing him to be a child and have fun while creating great memories is imperative.
Brent shares that his favourite composers are Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig Van Beethoven. He plans to participate in international piano competitions if opportunities arise. “I dream to be able to play other instruments like the guitar. I think playing musical instruments helps me to be more confident. I believe I will continue doing sports and music,” he says.
Brent’s busy year will see him performing at Carnegie Hall, participating in swimming, taekwondo, biking, art classes and taking up guitar lessons to expand his musical skills. He plans to continue piano lessons to improve technique and prepare for future international competitions.

CELEBRATING FATHERHOOD
In the tapestry of life, fathers weave an intricate and indispensable thread. As Father’s Day approaches on June 16, Edwin D’Souza takes this opportune moment to reflect on the profound impact fathers have in shaping our lives.
Beyond
providing material support, fathers play a crucial role in nurturing emotional resilience, instilling values and fostering personal development.
Every child looks at their father as a hero and as children we don’t often see what is behind the mask of being a hero. Our fathers go through a lot of silent suffering for several years in the hopes of giving their children a safe upbringing.
Fathers serve as pillars of strength and stability within the family unit. Their unwavering presence offers a sense of security and reassurance to children, creating a nurturing environment where they can thrive. Whether it’s offering a comforting embrace after a long day or providing guidance during challenging times, fathers serve as beacons of support, imparting a sense of confidence and self-assurance that resonates throughout a child’s life.
Fathers play a pivotal role in shaping a child’s identity and values. Through their actions and words, fathers transmit core principles such as integrity, resilience and perseverance. By serving as positive role models, they instill a moral compass that guides children through life’s myriad challenges. Whether it’s teaching the importance of honesty through their own honesty or demonstrating the value of
hard work through their dedication, fathers impart invaluable lessons that serve as the foundation for a child’s character development.
Meaningful interactions and shared experiences between father and child forge deep connections. The best memories we have as grownups is when we spent the best of times with our parents at the beach or when our fathers had us sit in the driver’s seat and steer the car around. We thought we were controlling the vehicle but it was always them. Well, that’s the whole point; they always made us feel empowered and believe we are capable of something and no less than any other person in the world. These moments of bonding have not only strengthened the father-child relationship but provided us with a sense of belonging and acceptance.
It’s undeniable that they also play a vital role in fostering intellectual development and academic success. Research has consistently shown that children with involved fathers tend to perform better in school, exhibit higher levels of cognitive development and are more likely to pursue higher education. Through their engagement in activities such as reading together, exploring the world around them and encouraging curiosity, fathers stimulate
intellectual growth and curiosity in their children, laying the groundwork for future success.
By modelling healthy relationships and communication skills, fathers teach children how to navigate interpersonal dynamics and cultivate meaningful connections with others. Whether it’s through their interactions with family members, friends or colleagues, fathers demonstrate the importance of empathy, respect and compassion, instilling valuable interpersonal skills that serve children well throughout their lives.
Moreover, they play a crucial role in fostering resilience too. Through their encouragement and support, they demonstrate how to navigate adversity, overcome challenges and bounce back from setbacks. By providing a safe space for expression and validation, fathers empower children to embrace their emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms.
Fathers are irreplaceable figures in the lives of their children, wielding a profound influence that extends far beyond the boundaries of the family unit. As we celebrate Father’s Day, let us honour and cherish the invaluable contributions of fathers everywhere, recognising the enduring legacy they leave in the hearts and minds of their children.

Father’s Day
A BiteLuxurious
Following the unveiling of Café Gourmandise at The Ritz-Carlton, Bahrain, Edwin D’Souza shares his account of the experience, which included savouring delicious croffles, to tantalise your taste buds.
The arrival of Café Gourmandise at The RitzCarlton Bahrain is a cause for celebration.
Tucked away in a cosy corner of this prestigious hotel, the café promises an indulgent escape, catering to those seeking a touch of luxury woven into their daily routine. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing this haven of deliciousness firsthand.
Our culinary journey began with a fragrant exploration of the hot drinks menu. There are some pairings in the culinary world that don’t quite make sense in theory; while traversing the beverage menu, the thought of drinking coffee with fresh bananas wasn’t one that I could warm up to. Surprisingly, though, the Banoffee Creme Brulee which was a mix of fresh bananas, dark chocolate, coffee and milk was a treat that did not disappoint! The coffee’s smooth bitterness played beautifully against the sweetness of banana and rich chocolate, creating a decadent beverage.
The Liegeois, on the other hand, was a classic dark hot chocolate elevated to new heights. A generous dollop of whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream created a delightful flavour contrast with the dark chocolate. Each sip was blissful indulgence for any chocolate lover. While the beverages were delightful, the signature dish at Café Gourmandise is the croffles - a delightful cross between a croissant and a waffle. The croffle which originated in Ireland and was popularised in South Korea, has already become a sensation, with its perfect balance of crispiness and flakiness. Café Gourmandise’s croffles were beautifully presented and promised that worldwide textural appeal.
First came the savoury croffle – a symphony of textures and flavours. A rich chicken and mushroom ragout formed the base, generously layered with melt-in-your-mouth Gruyere cheese and topped with vibrant green chives. Housesmoked salmon added a luxurious touch, while a dollop of sour cream and a sprinkle of dill offered a refreshing counterpoint. A touch of lime and delicate kristal caviar further elevated this already impressive creation.
The sweet croffle was a masterpiece of indulgence. Creme chantilly, a light and airy whipped cream, formed the foundation, upon which fresh, juicy strawberries and delicate meringue pieces were artfully arranged. A generous drizzle of Nutella and caramelised banana slices offered a delightful touch of sweetness. Toasted hazelnuts, vanilla custard, fragrant dates, slivered almonds, local honey, and a touch of cinnamon created a symphony of flavours that resonated on the palate long after the last bite.
Next, a “three-plate dream” of Café Gourmand arrived to further elevate the experience. This delightful selection offered a taste of various French and Danish pastries in miniature form. Three bite-sized delights, each boasting a unique flavour profile and texture, allowed you to sample a variety of offerings without overindulging. Additionally, a single “cafe croffle” - a delightful miniature version of its namesakeand five “cafe chouquettes,” delicate pastry puffs dusted with pearl sugar, rounded out this decadent offering.
If you’re looking to treat yourself to something special, Café Gourmandise is the perfect destination. From the delectable croffles to the delightful Cafe Gourmand, each bite is a testament to the culinary artistry on display. So, sit back, relax, and indulge in a world of luxury for your senses.

Panamera Car Launch
Bahraint hismonth.com /gallery May 2024 39
Porsche launched its latest edition of the Panamera at Porsche Centre Bahrain. SKAL AGM
SKAL International hosted its Annual General Meeting at Gulf Hotel Bahrain.
EXPERIENCING A LEGENDARY MARQUE
Motoring correspondent Kristian Harrison has driven many cars in numerous places around the world, but rarely has he come back from an event as thrilled as he did this month after being invited by Porsche Centre Bahrain to experience the birthplace of the iconic brand in Stuttgart, Germany. The adventure offered a perfect blend of cuttingedge innovation and rich automotive heritage, with the launch of the new Panamera E-Hybrid models followed by a celebration of 50 years of Porsche Turbo.
Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid
After arriving in Germany on a scorching day and attending the opening press conference where the amazing technology in the new Panamera E-Hybrids was laid bare, the excitement was palpable. If only the next day could come sooner so we could get behind the wheel!
When it did arrive, it did so with thick grey clouds and a torrential downpour. Oh how I missed that bipolar European weather! However, the dramatic deluge added even more of a sense of adventure to our drive.
After assembling at the Porsche Museum in the heart of the complex of factories and offices which constitutes the Porsche Headquarters, we were a given a demonstration of perhaps the Panamera’s most outstanding feature, the Porsche Active Ride system which is being rolled out across all E-Hybrid models in the Porsche portfolio. Amongst many other benefits, like insulation
against uneven surfaces and dynamic ground clearance, this advanced suspension technology constantly monitors longitudinal and lateral acceleration. It actively reacts to braking inputs as well as to the driver’s steering movements. It also builds up forces that counter the natural pitching and rolling movements of the body and in this way keeps the body level in all driving situations. Best of all, the car (through connection with an app) has the ability to demonstrate its impressive capabilities on your phone – a feature I thoroughly enjoyed – so you can show off your dancing car to your friends!
As for the drive itself, the Panamera E-Hybrid models showcase Porsche’s impressive blend of efficiency and performance. The crowning moment as we snaked our way through the Black Forest was driving the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. Equipped with monstrous V8 engine and an enhanced plug-in hybrid system, it offered
powerful acceleration and unparallelled control. Navigating the serpentine roads amidst towering trees and hairpin turns, the Panamera’s precision handling was a delight, gripping the wet road with ease.
With a staggering 680PS and 930Nm of torque, this model is the epitome of power and luxury. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 315kmph, the Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid handled every twist and turn with poise. Celebrating 50 Years of Porsche Turbo
The second day of our trip offered a different kind of excitement, as we celebrated 50 years of the marque’s Turbo branding by driving five of the most iconic models from different eras. As the oldest Turbo models are some of the rarest and most sought-after beauties in existence, for some reason the Porsche Museum didn’t trust a young whippersnapper like me with the keys, but they did bring out a classic 930 for us to see! Ultimately, our journey through time on the road began with the classic 1980s blue convertible 944 model. This Eighties icon still turns heads with its timeless design and character. Driving the 944 was a nostalgic experience, its manual transmission providing a raw, unfiltered connection to the road. Each gear shift was a delightful reminder of why we fell in love with driving in the first place. The open-top drive through the scenic countryside, with the wind in our hair and the sun on our faces, was pure bliss.
Next up was the absolutely beautiful 1990s silver 993, a model renowned for its robust build and striking design. The red leather interior added an extra touch of luxury to the driving experience. Handling this manual classic on the roads was an unimaginable delight, blending the charm of the past with the refined driving pleasures of today. As one of the iconic cars from my childhood when I first starting taking interest in these gorgeous machines, the nostalgic sensation of driving the 993 was a vivid reminder of Porsche’s enduring legacy and commitment to excellence.
With the sun breaking through thick clouds, casting a golden glow over rolling hills and lush green fields, it really felt like being in an automobile utopia. However, things stepped up even further when I got the freedom of the Autobahn to open the throttle of the latest 911 Turbo.
I won’t say exactly what speed I hit as my parents still read my columns and I don’t want a text from a freaking-out mother, but let’s just say it caused me to literally whoop out loud!
Reflecting on the drive, it’s clear that each Porsche Turbo model has its own unique character, yet all share a common DNA of performance, innovation and sheer driving joy. The ability of Porsche to turn heads, especially in a countryside village with a convoy of multi-coloured classic and modern super cars passing through like a train of Skittles (a sight to behold!) is testament to heritage and quality.
As I departed Stuttgart tinged with sadness, the memories of roaring engines and the seamless blend of electric and petrol power in the Panamera stayed with me long after I touched back down in Bahrain. This trip was not just about driving some of the best cars in the world; it was about connecting with the essence of what makes Porsche a legendary marque in the automotive world. I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to Porsche Centre Bahrain and Porsche Middle East for making a dream come true!

BENTAYGA AND MULLINER REACH NEW PEAKS WITH THE APEX EDITION
Bentley Motors is extending both the visual impact and dynamic ability of the Bentayga even further through its Mulliner bespoke division, with the launch of a global 20-car collection named the Apex Edition.
Featuring ultra-strong, lightweight 22” Mulliner carbon wheels teamed with carbon ceramic brakes, it will be offered in a choice of six unique specifications curated by Mulliner’s design team. All include a central painted livery stripe extending over bonnet and roof, a first for the Bentayga. Even rarer will be a specification offered only to owners of the Continental GT Le Mans Edition who will be able to commission an Apex Edition Bentayga in matching trim and livery.
The Apex Edition is based on the Bentayga S, which features Bentley’s potent 4.0-litre, twin-scroll turbocharged V8 petrol engine. This develops 542 bhp (550 PS) and 568 lb.ft. (770 Nm) of torque, with a 0-60 mph (0–100 km/h) time of 4.4 (4.5) seconds and a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). Now the Bentayga Apex Edition delivers even greater agility and braking performance thanks to its carbon wheels and carbon ceramic brakes, making it the most dynamic-looking and driving Bentayga ever.
With production limited to just 20 Apex Edition examples worldwide, exclusivity is assured.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE FIRST 911 WITH HYBRID DRIVE COMPLETED SUCCESSFULLY
The first Porsche 911 sports car for the road with a hybrid drive is in the starting blocks. Following an extensive development and testing programme, the new 911 with a performance-focused hybrid drive is ready for series production.
“For the first time in our icon’s 61-year history, we are installing a hybrid drive system in a roadgoing 911. This innovative performance hybrid makes the 911 even more dynamic,” says Vice President Model Line 911 and 718, Frank Moser.
“We left nothing to chance during development
and tested the new 911 under all sorts of conditions all over the world. From the freezing cold to scorching heat, as was the case during the final stages of testing in Dubai. Whether at a high drivetrain load in the demanding conditions of mountain passes or in the stop-and-go traffic of an urban environment, the new 911 has mastered even the most difficult challenges with aplomb. All in all, our engineers and test drivers clocked up more than five million kilometres of development driving.”
Testing and tuning on the Nürburgring
Nordschleife has always had a special significance during development of the 911. Over the course of performance testing, Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister completed a lap of the circuit in 7:16.934 minutes – 8.7 seconds faster than the corresponding version of the predecessor model. The test car was equipped with standard road tyres, plus the aero kit with a fixed rear wing that has been available as an option for several model generations now, and which provides increased downforce at high speeds.

Money, You & Budgets
Last month, Pria Masson wrote about how we all have a unique relationship with money and how that relationship needs to be understood and balanced in our work and personal lives. This month, she takes that idea forward into how we can use that idea to plan our finances and tackle that unpleasant activity called “budgeting”. Someone recently asked me what the most basic thing was related to money that I would like to tell my child. My answer was “that it is a finite resource, and its usage needs to be thought through”. This very rudimentary idea does shape our relationship with money, irrespective of how much money we do have. The idea that it is finite and needs to be managed is a universal truth.
How do you begin?
The first step is to understand the difference between basic needs or essentials, followed by the wants (the things that are nice to have but negotiable) and finally the desires or the luxuries. Where each expense sits, differs with your life stage or the stage of your business. For example, for parents with preschoolers, on a tight budget, school fees are not yet an actual essential. When the child grows to school age, it shifts the bucket it sits in. For your business, a capital expense needed to expand the business may seem essential, but, if you can manage at status quo, it’s a “nice to have”. On the other hand, that same investment, if linked to a big opportunity of growth that is time bound, becomes essential.
What is not tracked, is rarely controlled.
I cannot stress the importance of tracking and knowing your expenses or costs as well as your income sources, the timelines of payments due etc. This is again true
for business and personal finances. It is undoubtedly a tedious task, and the desire to just keep it in your head, or just spend as things comes up or any of the other ways that money is managed without tracking, eventually it is likely to catch up with you. If you do not identify and track, you are unlikely to know what your own “finite” number is, and, without that, living within your means, can be tricky and that is how personal debt, financial stress and personal stress all adds up.
What about contingencies and unforeseen expenses?
Whether for your business or for your personal life, it is prudent to aim for a minimum three to four months of “only essentials” existence. Give yourself that runway and do not touch that money. The fact that you can survive, gives you breathing room and the space to take those hard decisions you may need to take, or to wait for opportunities that appear in the horizon.
About going overbudget, credit cards, self-funding, etc.
When you feel you need money for an activity that’s not on your budget and you need to draw from another source, what then? Then you do what you need to but remember to weigh your options knowing that something will be sacrificed today, for a benefit. That could be lower savings, it could also be temporarily taking money out of another bucket and placing it where you need it now.
But remember to put a timeline to when you will restore the balance. Without that, the problem can snowball. In case of businesses as well, under duress, you can fund it with personal funds or a loan but know when it’s time to cut your losses – and set that time up front if you can.
This seems like a lot of “do’s” and “don’ts” but it is simply my personal framework to help people manage their finances. There are many ways to do these things; this, is just one. My philosophy is that being able to identify, manage and plan for finances is empowering and reduces stress. It frees up the daily mental space that goes into every payment made. Make that time and mental space every few months and give yourself the space to take daily strategic decisions. It seems evident that it goes a much longer way for your mental and financial health.

THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT
Taylor Swift
What’s the story?
The 11th studio album by the infamous American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, The Tortured Poets Department, was made available by Republic Records on April 19, 2024. Released that same day was a double album edition called The Anthology, which included a surprise second volume of songs, bringing the total up to 31 tracks of romantic catharsis. Recalling how she “almost had it all”, Swift uncovers hidden truths about her long-standing relationship of six years that ended over the beginning of the ever-successful “The Eras Tour” via motifs of self-awareness, delusion, anger, and humour. This breakup album features a blend of minimalist synth-pop, folk-pop, and chamber pop, with elements of rock and country music. It’s characterised by mid-tempo compositions driven by synthesisers, drum machines, piano, and guitar.
Worth a listen?
While acclaimed as the pinnacle of Swift’s songwriting, the album fails to measure up to the standard set by her previous records, such as folklore and evermore. The album draws inspiration from Swift’s earlier musical eras rather than forging a distinct new identity or sound. The songs are loosely linked by vignettes depicting a tumultuous breakup. The lyrics are almost as messy as the genres of the album, ranging from her neon-pop tracks like “Florida!!!” to folk balladry like “loml”. Though the emotions are melodramatic, akin to Swift’s best work, a more polished version of the album could have ushered her into a new era with greater impact.
The third studio album by English-Albanian singer Dua Lipa, is her first full-length studio album release in four years since Future Nostalgia (2020). Described as a ‘psychedelic-popinfused tribute to UK rave culture’, it is a record that resonates with the unadulterated delight and contentment found of having clarity in situations, including hard goodbyes and vulnerable beginnings that eventually turned out to be milestones as a result of embracing optimism and composure to navigate through the world’s chaos. Optimism is also packed with truly insidious earworms that take a minute to sink in, but then refuse to release listeners, who will be humming ‘Houdini’ and ‘Training Season’ long after the album ends. In contrast to her previous works, Radical Optimism exudes an effortless charm, presenting a collection of relaxed dance-pop tunes that uplift the mood (‘These Walls’, ‘French Exit’), energise the body (‘End of an Era’, ‘Falling Forever’), all while Dua Lipa gracefully reflects on solo living and personal development with unwavering confidence.

STELLAR BLADE
The future of humanity hangs in the balance in Stellar Blade, an all-new story-driven action adventure. But as EVE tackles the Naytiba one-by-one, piecing together the mysteries of the past in the ruins of human civilisation, she realises that her mission is far from straightforward. In fact, almost nothing is as it seems…
SENUA’S SAGA: HELLBLADE II

WHAT IS IT?
Play as the new kid in South Park and join Cartman, Stan, Kyle and Kenny in threedimensional glory, to celebrate the most magical day in any young child’s life – a snow day! Grab up to three friends in this four-player co-op game and battle your way through the snow-piled town of South Park on a quest to save the world and enjoy a day without school.
GAMEPLAY
A direct follow-up to the storyline of two excellent turn-based RPGs, this cooperative 3D hack-and-slash admirably tries a lot of new things but gets none of them right, leaving us with a monotonous, slipshod mess. The controls are awkward and clumsy, the weapons and abilities are limp and uninteresting, and even with only five levels that can be completed in as many hours, it still feels like it drags on for far too long. Worse than that though: all the humour and shocking moments for which South Park and its recent games are known is utterly missing in action.
GRAPHICS
The drag that levels become isn’t helped by the underwhelming level design on display. Rather than lean into key locations from the animated series, Snow Day instead turns to generic, snowcovered levels that funnel you from one end to the other save for a few standout moments. It’s bafflingly lazy game design.
HOMEWORLD 3
Homeworld 3 is the third game in the popular 3D real-time strategy series set in space, coming 21 years after the previous instalment. After a successful victory over the Vaygr, Karan S’Jet was able to open the ancient hyperspace gate network across the galaxy, unveiling the ‘Age of S’jet’, an era of galactic trading and development, but this golden age seems to have reached the end: while she was opening gates at the edge of the galaxy, Karan disappeared and a mysterious scourge known as ‘The Anomaly’ has started to spread across the galaxy, darkening entire star systems and threatening the existence of all sentient beings.

One Perfect Couple
Ruth Ware
Lyla is in a bit of a rut. Her postdoctoral research has fizzled out, she’s pretty sure they won’t extend her contract, and things with her boyfriend, Nico, an aspiring actor, aren’t going great. When the opportunity arises for Nico to join the cast of a new reality TV show, One Perfect Couple, she decides to try out with him. A whirlwind audition process later, Lyla find herself whisked off to a tropical paradise, boating through the Indian Ocean towards Ever After Island, where the two of them will compete against four other couples in order to win a cash prize.
But not long after they arrive on the deserted island, things start to go wrong. After the first challenge leaves everyone rattled and angry, an overnight storm takes matters from bad to worse. Cut off from the mainland by miles of ocean, deprived of their phones, and unable to contact the crew that brought them there, the group must band together for survival. As tensions run high and fresh water runs low, Lyla finds that this game show is all too real – and the stakes are life or death.
