In our interview section this month, we speak to the First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, HE Jamal Mohamed Abdulrahman Fakhroo, who explains the significance of the 146th Inter Parliamentary Union Assembly which will be hosted by the Parliament of Bahrain this month. Ready for a night of laughs? Al Dana Amphitheatre is set to host the second comedy act of the season with internationally-renowned comedians, Mo Amer and Maz Jobrani, taking the stage for a highly anticipated live performance.
Mohammed ‘Mo’ Amer is a Palestinian-American stand-up comedian, actor, writer, and producer from Houston, Texas. He can currently be seen on the award-winning comedy Mo streaming on Netflix. The show won a 2023 Gotham Award for ‘Breakthrough Series’ and was named one of AFI ‘s (American Film Institute) top 10 shows of the year. Classical music lovers will rejoice at this truly enchanting musical evening by the Bahrain Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by none other than Maestro Mubarak Najem. Founded in the 1970’s by Mohammed Oraik, the band performs ancient folkloric voice arts significant to Bahrain’s cultural heritage while executing the nuances that exist across the nation. In collaboration with the United States Embassy in the Kingdom of Bahrain, this fantastic festival will feature the Brass-A-Holics, who have been touring worldwide since 2010. Poetry lovers will enjoy excerpts that speak of life, visions and human consciousness by some of the most prominent and expressive poets during this festive evening.
The event is being held on the occasion of World Poetry Day, celebrated by UNESCO since 1999, and in commemoration of Arab Poetry Day adopted by the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organisation (ALECSO) since 2015, which falls on March 21 annually.

The Qalali Folk Band boasts a rich history stretching back more than 100 years as they preserve and promote the traditional seafaring musical traditions of Bahrain, most notably the Al-Fjiri genre of the Qalali village in Muharraq. TREINTA CARAS DE LA LUNA SALAH EL-MELIGY ART CONCEPT
Treinta Caras de la Luna, for Egyptian artist Salah El-Meligy, is a journey to the moon and its phases. The moon has been a source of inspiration for many myths in different cultures that remained in the popular conscience. His artworks are meticulously drawn in ink on Canson paper in circles with a diameter of 37:60 cm. The exhibition will be open from Sunday to Thursday from 10am to 2pm and from 3pm to 6pm. The Little Archaeologist programme introduces children and young adults to the archaeological pieces and heritage sites of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Children will work under the supervision of specialists to find the artifacts with tools similar to those used in real restoration operations, along with a simplified explanation about the discovered artifacts. The 2023 edition of Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) - the leading gardening and agricultural show in the Arabian Gulf - held under the patronage of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and supported by HRH Princess Sabeeka bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of HM the King and the President of the Advisory Council of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) will be inaugurated on March 9.
NIAD Secretary General, Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, speaks to George Middleton about the exhibition which she believes contributes to creating important opportunities for participating institutions to develop their business and expand the scope of their activities locally, regionally and internationally.
What can we expect from this year’s Bahrain International Garden Show?
Attendees can expect a lot from this year’s garden show including a wide variety of beautiful goods and services. There will also be a lot of information and valuable knowledge about environmental, agricultural, and waterrelated topics. Each stand is directed towards awareness; Alba (Aluminium Bahrain) showcases their environmental effort, NOGA will showcase what they do to protect water and what they’ve
done with water management. There is a nexus between energy, water, and food. Hence, every organisation in the awareness zone, whether one of the major companies behind an educational institution or an NGO, will showcase beneficial information - a learning opportunity for visitors.
Aside from the workshops, on the commercial side there will be new products and services including a lot of plants and greenery. So, we can say that we provide the platform, and our participants make the show look good, and are the ones that make a difference every year with what they showcase.
What sort of contribution does the Garden Show make towards tourism?
From what we can gather from responses we’re getting on our social media channels, people know it, people are waiting for it, and people want to come and visit it. It is a highly anticipated show that will attract people. So yes, it contributes to tourism because it’s one of the social calendar’s highlights regarding exhibitions.
Why is the garden show essential for the agricultural and horticultural sectors?
For us, it’s an opportunity to showcase results and announce plans; that’s how I see it. It also supports businesses in the industry itself. So on the business side, some people have started with us and announced their presence or launched their company through the Garden Show because they know the exposure they will get on the platform is unique and robust. This has happened with businesses with farmers. The Hoora and Aali Farmers’ Markets came to be due to the farmers’ participation in the Garden Show and their requests for marketing channels and support. They received
it, thankfully, and now they’re thriving, and people know them and flock to them.
On the educational side, I asked the Electricity and Water Authority, which participates every year, why it is essential for them to be a part of the show so I may explain how important it is. They said that it is the best opportunity for them to interact with the public because it’s well-attended and attracts the right kind of people to whom they would like to send their message regarding water conservation and electricity conservation. They’ve been with us ever since the garden shows’ inception and consider it an important opportunity and what they said applies to everybody else.
The Bahrain International Garden Show is a very good opportunity. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn, and so people plan for it. They put out their best, what they want to say and the strong message they want to see at the venue.
What stands out at this year’s show, and what are you most looking forward to?
I look forward to having it again after so long. For me, the Garden Show is an extended family that comes together once a year. We miss that. It needs to happen and continue because it has a lot of immeasurable effects afterwards. The fact is that it brings everybody together for three days through that platform and provides the opportunity for exchange, partnership, learning and commerce. I’m looking forward to having it and look forward to what people display because I know they out do themselves every time and I’m very
appreciative of their contributions.
Could you tell us about the Bahrain Garden Club Competition?
The Chelsea Flower Show and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) have an annual competition for hobbyists. For years now the garden club has followed suit of the RHS and its Chief who said that he was a keen gardener himself. So when the English community in Bahrain approached him in the 60s to establish a similar organisation in Bahrain, the Bahrain Garden Club was established.
A year after 1967, the first competition that targeted hobbyists was held, and it’s been happening ever since except for in the year he passed away. They have been very diligent in hosting this competition and it is something that children look forward to because they want to win. It has a positive effect and instills a love for gardening.
So, this comes as a result of what happened in 2003 when HRH Princess Sabeeka went to inaugurate the display of the annual competition; she said this piece of history needs to continue, but it needs to be strengthened. Let’s create a new periodic event that will take it higher and become a platform for commerce, awareness and education.
The Bahrain International Garden Show will take place at Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB) in Sakhir, and will be open to the public on March 9 from 1pm until 9 pm and on March 10 to 12 from 10am to 9pm.
In the year 2022, Japan and the Kingdom of Bahrain marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. This month, we spoke to the Ambassador of Japan to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Masayuki Miyamoto, who joined the Japanese Foreign Ministry in 1981. Given his outstanding political career rooted in the region, HE is determined to further promote friendly relations between Japan and Bahrain.
Having opted for Arabic as his specialty when joining the Japanese Foreign Ministry, HE Miyamoto was sent to Syria where he studied the language for three years as a diplomatic trainee.
“Following that, I served in several Arab countries, from Iraq eastward to Mauritania westward,” he explains. “I visited Bahrain for the first time in 1994, as a member of the delegation of HM the Emperor and Empress during their visit. I’m very happy to now be Ambassador to this beautiful Kingdom and I am determined to promote friendly relations between Bahrain and Japan.”
Japan and Bahrain have enjoyed stable economic and trade relations for decades. The trade exchange volume has increased steadily over the years reaching JPY235 billion (USD1.8 billion) in 2022 - the highest level in their bilateral history. The value of Bahrain’s exports to Japan has reached around USD1.3 billion, which is the highest record as well.
“As for the nature of Bahrain’s exported products, it is worth mentioning that, compared with the figure from 2018 for example, the percentage of non-oil products has increased from four percent to 19 percent, reflecting the rapid development of the non-oil sector in Bahrain. In particular, aluminum has emerged as one of the top products imported from Bahrain, with 56,000 tonnes in volume and USD170 million in value,” he states.
“As for direct investment to Bahrain, Japan is the second biggest Asian investor following India, where the cumulative amount exceeded USD800 million as of the third quarter of 2022. The Japanese private sector has invested in several major projects, including two power plants that cover around 70 percent of the total demand of electricity and water in Bahrain,” he adds.
Around 160 Japanese citizens currently live in Bahrain. “They work in a variety of industries including manufacturing, engineering, finance, commerce and others,” he says.
Last year Japan and Bahrain signed an investment agreement which aims at protecting the investments of both countries for the future. This agreement is now in the process of ratification in both countries.
On September 28, 2022 the Japan and Bahrain Summit Meeting took place. HE Miyamota states that His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, had the first telephone conversation with HE Kishida Fumio, Japanese Prime Minister last February. This was in addition to a face-toface meeting in Tokyo last September, on the occasion of HRH the Crown Prince’s visit to Japan to attend the national funeral of the late Prime Minister, HE Abe Shinzo.
“To summarise the two meetings, the two leaders agreed to further enhance the bilateral relationship in various fields on
both governmental and private levels. Among the concrete measures to promote economic and business relations was the ‘Agreement on Investment’, which was signed last June,” he states.
In addition, the two leaders confirmed an early introduction of visa exemption for Bahraini officials. “HRH the Crown Prince expressed his hope to strengthen bilateral cooperation in science and technology, highlighting the success of launching ‘Light1’ - Bahrain’s first artificial satellite in cooperation with the Japanese Space Agency,” he states.
Further, the two leaders exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine, agreed on the importance of international cooperation, and confirmed continuous close coordination between the two countries.
When asked which areas of business and diplomatic relations can be improved between Bahrain and Japan, he states that the two governments have been holding ‘Policy Consultations’ and ‘Security Dialogues’ on the undersecretary level for a decade with the latest ‘Policy Consultation’ being held in Tokyo last September.
“Through these consultations and dialogues, the two sides have discussed several bilateral and global issues across various areas: diplomatic, trade and investment, environment, science and technology, culture and others. The two countries expect to further strengthen their coordination to tackle global issues as well as expand the fields of bilateral cooperation,” he explains.
In March, a Japanese Parliamentarian delegation is expected to visit Bahrain to participate in the 146th Inter-Parliamentary Union, which will be hosted by the Kingdom. “The delegation will consist of four members of the House of Representatives and two members of the House of Councilors,” he states.
The role of cultural exchange is significant when creating an understanding of countries’ cultures and beliefs. During the Spring of Culture 2023, organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, the Japanese embassy hosted the Japanese Film Festival.
“We have hosted the Japanese Film Festival over several years in Bahrain, the last of which was held in February 2022, in
cooperation with the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of establishment of the diplomatic relations between our two countries,” he says.
As part of this year’s festival, the embassy screened two movies: the fantasy drama ‘Destiny – the tale of Kamakura’ and the animated musical comedy film ‘On-gaku –Our sound’.
HE Miyamoto believes that one of the biggest similarities between the two countries is the character of its people. “They respect seniors and their experience, attach high importance to courtesy and manners, and keep time and promise. These features are essential to earn reliability and trustworthiness among individuals and lay the foundation for advanced civil society,” he says.
Meanwhile, he believes one of the biggest differences between the two countries might be their climate. “Japan enjoys four seasons, which are characterised by spring of cherry-blossoms, autumn of coloured leaves, rainy summer and snowy winter. While Bahrain basically has two seasons; an extremely hot summer and a moderate summer,” he says.
“However, it seems that the climate of both countries has changed over the past decade or two, probably due to the global climate change, where the summer in Japan has become unbearably hot, and the moderate summer in Bahrain has become very cold. I guess this has reduced the difference between the two countries in this regard!” he adds.
For those wishing to visit Japan from Bahrain, HE advises visitors to obtain a valid visa and vaccination certificate or a PCR negative certificate within 72 hours of departure.

“The Bahraini Royal Family and the Japanese Imperial Family enjoy a traditionally close relationship, where HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa visited Japan in 2012 and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister visited Japan three times; in 2013, 2019 and 2022, while HM Emperor Naruhito and the Empress visited Bahrain 1994 when they were Crown Prince and Princess. I pray for the prosperity of both royal families and everlasting diplomatic relations.”
Members of Parliament from around the world will convene in Bahrain for the 146th Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly from March 11 to March 15. Bahrain This Month speaks to Bahraini legislator and the First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, HE Jamal Mohamed Abdulrahman Fakhroo, who explains the significance of the IPU that is to be hosted by Bahrain.
Hundreds of parliamentarians from all over the world are expected to attend the deliberations on the overall theme of ‘Promoting peaceful coexistence and inclusive societies: Fighting intolerance’. According to the 2022 Global Peace Index, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a global think tank, the world has reached its lowest point of peacefulness in the last 15 years.
The Inter Parliamentary Union was established in 1889 with the purpose of bringing parliaments together to discuss international matters. “Through these meetings, parliamentarians are able to discuss matters related to peace, society, freedom and so other subjects that are related to the betterment of people’s lives, bringing freedom and peace to people, societies and the world,” states HE Jamal Mohamed Abdulrahman Fakhroo.
During the Assembly, the IPU will offer opportunities for exchanges on good practices to promote inclusion and support peaceful coexistence as a prerequisite of resilient, cohesive and democratic societies. An estimated 110 parliaments, including delegations from countries in conflict situations, will attend the IPU which will be held at Exhibition World Bahrain (EWB). The IPU currently consists of 179 Member Parliaments following the readmission of Liberia. “We expect between 700 and 800 parliamentarians to attend the IPU assembly in addition to their supporting staff. Hence, we are expecting an attendance of over 1500 people,” he says.
“The outcome we are discussing is with regards to international agendas. We don’t discuss Bahrain or local agenda. So, the outcome of the assembly will be represented through the statement that will be issued at the end of the conference covering the main subject,” he explains.
This statement will include a summary of the speeches delivered by speakers and representatives, covering the theme of the conference. “We have a speaker from King Hamad Centre for Peaceful Coexistence and the Supreme Council of Women. The main speech of our delegation will be delivered by Chairman of the Shura Council, HE Ali bin Saleh Al Saleh,” he states.
The Kingdom of Bahrain has a history of religious coexistence in the region. This is evident through the presence of a synagogue, churches, the 200-year-old Manama temple and mosques. “When you host a conference in your country, the idea is to showcase your country to these delegations while building a political relationship with other parliamentarians. We want to showcase our country, our peaceful coexistence and inclusive society,” he says.
Regarding gender equality and the representation of women, HE believes that a 50 percent representation of women in parliament is necessary. “I believe that we should not have a set figure, but rather keep it open and push the society to elect the number of women they want to elect. It would be great if we can have a 50-50 representation in our parliament,” he says.
“We do not know the exact number of women parliamentarians attending the assembly. Usually, approximately 30 percent of attendees are women. Today, globally, the percentage of women in parliament is approximately 25 percent. Hence, Bahrain is at the global percentage with eight women in the house of representatives and nine women in the Shura Council,” he says.
The Assembly will also see the launch of a new IPU campaign, Parliaments for the Planet, designed to mobilise parliaments and parliamentarians to act on the climate emergency.

“Cabale Exquise is not an ordinary event agency; our events are meant to be unfathomable. As far as we know, the concept does not exist anywhere else,” says Adélaïde De Vos, a 33-year-old Belgian woman.
Adélaïde is a qualified business engineer who graduated from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management in 2014. After working in the private sector for five years, she quit her job to explore the world for six months before wanting to start her own business. “For months, I did a deep introspection that led to ‘the light-bulb moment’. I was convinced I had found the project of my lifeCabale Exquise,” she reminisces.

She speaks to Farah Baig about cooking in an effort to raise Bahrain and the region’s cuisine to world-class levels, while imparting some sound advice for young women on the occasion of International Women’s Day.
The finest of ingredients, meticulous plating and a focus on creating a truly distinct dining experience has earned Fusions By Tala a trio of accolades at the MENA’s 50 Best Restaurants awards by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants. At the helm of the award-winning restaurant is none other than the Bahraini Chef, Tala Bashmi - a true master of her craft.
The restaurant received the ‘Best Restaurant in Bahrain’, ‘No. 3 Best Restaurant in MENA’ and the ‘Highest Climber’ award. “Hard work, grit, sheer determination, and sticking to what we believe in has been our recipe for success. It is a lot easier to give people food that they are familiar with, food that they ‘want’ - but to create food, or a way of eating that they may not have experienced before is much more rewarding,” says Chef Tala.
Chef Tala, now world-renowned, was recently part of the jury for SP Young Chef Academy for Middle East, Africa and South Asia alongside Chef Siba Mtongana and Chef Selassie Atadika. However, she had previously dedicated her life to being a professional soccer player – a passion for which she went to the US for college. Following an injury, she moved to London where she studied fine arts and illustration before moving home.
“But even back when I was 17 and graduating high school, I remember thinking, ‘Would it be so crazy if I wanted to go to culinary school?’. I had the realisation that you can turn a person’s day around with a good meal,” adds the Swiss-trained chef.
Fusions By Tala is among the first restaurants in the region to raise local and regional flavours to world-class levels – a move that makes them truly special. Black lime, safi, mehyawa and cardamom are just some of the quintessential local flavours that can be enjoyed as part of the restaurant’s culinary artistry. “We focus on using regional and seasonal ingredients when they are available and that is an important part of my cooking philosophy,” she states. “Local products are key to telling the story and allowing my guests to try things they may have never experienced before.”
According to Chef Tala, the key factors that make a good dish are flavour first and foremost, followed by identity. “I find it important to be able to see the chef’s identity shine through their dishes because that is our unique footprint in the culinary world,” she says.
Being a successful woman in the world of gastronomy, Chef Tala concludes with some advice for young women wishing to enter the culinary field: “Work hard, don’t take shortcuts, work without ego, and utilise all of your time wisely. Teach yourself even if others won’t teach you, and be hungry to learn new things every day.”

It has been beautifully designed, with a stunning, hand-crafted interior and has officially opened. From South African “vetkoek” and mince to Nigeria’s famous Jollof to Mozambique’s famous peri-peri Chicken enjoy an array of Africa’s finest favourites. A grand opening was held bringing guests the delectable flavours of African cuisine.
Since joining the publication, I have waxed lyrical to colleagues and clients about South African cuisine and Africa as a continent. You can imagine my excitement and delight at the chance to review Kula!
With beating drums and welcoming staff, Kula showcases African tradition in going the extra mile. The elegantly decorated interior features rich furnishings, beautiful drapery and chic, vibrant decorations, sourced from Ghana and other parts of the continent. Totally Instagram-worthy!
The staff were warm, friendly and welcoming, taking extra care to carefully explain the drinks and food menu to my colleague Shilu who had never tried African food before. Not only was Kula’s reputation on the line, but so was mine. As she was appropriately named, Patience explained to Shilu about Kula’s African Volcando: Sprite with elderflower and rose with a surprising twist of popping candy - an absolute delight. I opted for the Rock shandy with a perfect balance of citrus.
The chefs take pride in using only the freshest ingredients to prepare all their signature dishes with delicious herbs and spices. The menu boasts an array of traditional and contemporary specialities, showcasing some of the continent’s favourite dishes. These included South African Pap (a maize dish) & Biltong Bites, Kenyan Kuku Paka - a dish eaten on festive occasions, and Nigerian Jollof - a rice dish flavoured with tomatoes and peppers.
We were treated to an assortment of dishes to tickle our tastebuds. We were treated to an Ethiopian Azifa Lentil Salad- a tangy salad of mixed lentils, cucumber and tomato with sweet peppers and baby spinach leaves, served with a citrus and herb dressing. The salad was creamy and crunchy, offering an array of textures and subtle spices.

that offered cumin, coriander, fennel, and garlic flavours to create a spicy take on spaghetti pasta, served with a squeeze of tangy lemon.
As dessert was presented just as we thought we couldn’t indulge anymore. The Ghanaian Forbidden Cocoa- a rich, dark mousse created with decadent with a crispy homemade malted chocolate tuile, dusted with icing sugar and cracked open at your table. This sharing dish took me back to childhood and reminded me of licking the chocolate cake batter off the spoon while my mother was baking. So nostalgic!
Aside from a welcoming atmosphere, fantastic cuisine and ambience, the restaurant gives back to the continent through its Muranga drink. All profits of every drink sold will be donated to Africa’s most biodiverse protected area - Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

with fresh pomegranate jewels and homemade dukkah, and Merguez farm-raised lamb spread, served with grilled bread. Combining all three dips was incredibly satisfying as the flavours complimented each other so well.
The Cape Mussels served up next were truly spectacular! The coastal seafood classic simmered in a rich cream garlic sauce and presented with a light, crusty herb baguette. The Cape Mussels lingered on our table for as we scooped up spoonfuls of the sauce with the baguette, “mmmm-ing” at every morsel.
Then came the South African Beef Curry delicious fusion of beef mince, carrots and onions, presented on a bed of rice accompanied by banana with chilli flakes and the famous fruity, piquant chutney. The mince was savoury, while the chutney was sweet and tangy.
Tunisian Harissa Spaghetti was the main finale
The Friday Family Brunch Fiesta at The K Hotel is back much to the delight of brunch-goers in the Kingdom. Farah Baig checks it out and tells us why it’s a brunch you absolutely cannot miss in Juffair.
Fridays are all about unwinding, and brunching with good company in tow is the right way to spend it! The atmosphere at Kolors sure felt like a fiesta as soon as I walked through the lobby of The K Hotel with the band’s upbeat Latin music keeping guests on their feet. Executive Chef Abdelkader Hamadi, who has 28 years of culinary experience, and his culinary team had an exciting brunch in store for diners with plenty of live cooking stations, countless starters, delightful desserts and more. There is a true kaleidoscope of delicious appetisers to choose from including canapes, healthy salads, hot and cold mezzas, terrines, and a colourful selection of sushi. This was in addition to a cheese station and selection of soups too. With a love for Japanese cuisine, I just could not resist myself and plated up a selection of sushi. This was truly the best start to my experience as every roll was made with
the freshest of ingredients. A generous serving of greens and mezzas satisfied our healthy cravings too.
On scouring the lavish buffet, it was clear what my next choice would be – the Beef Wellington. I was very kindly helped to carve a slice which was topped with a delicious sauce made in-house. It was perfectly cooked with the beef still quite succulent. Few things are as comforting as a warm bowl of pasta. At the live station, you can choose from a wide variety of pasta. I opted for some delicious ravioli in a tomato base with plenty of fresh vegetables; it had a great balance of flavours.
Keen on giving diners the very best brunch experience, The K Hotel offers a wide range of fresh seafood and marinated meats which are cooked to order. I opted for a delicious serving of mussels, prawns, lamb chops and shish tawook. After being grilled my plate was
brought straight to my table where I could savour them. The lamb chops were succulent and flavourful while the seafood was cooked just right – moist but not rubbery. I appreciated the fact that all their seafood is exceptionally fresh, and so you do not get that distinct fishy smell when plating up your choices.
The hot food counter, too, boasts a wide range of breakfast and lunch favourites – baked beans, sausages, biriyani, noodles, sesame potatoes and more. Their biriyani was a clear standout with the right balance of spices, and thankfully wasn’t too heavy following the extensive feast. As is customary with every great meal, we relished some of their fantastic desserts. The dessert counter is truly enticing with a large chocolate fountain taking centre stage. The assortment of desserts means that there is something for everyone with warm umm ali, fresh fruits, delicious mini tarts, slices of cake, delicate cups of mousse and even full sized cakes - absolute paradise.
We were quite impressed by the choices laid out for diners and loved the vibrant atmosphere which makes it ideal for a fun Friday out with friends or family. We’re sure to be back!

Most people complain about having to learn a new language claiming that its grammar, vocabulary, and other aspects related to its mechanisms and
structure are difficult to grasp. In addition, they argue that learning a new language to the point of well-rounded comprehension requires a lot of time. While it presents its fair share of challenges, the benefits are endless too. So, it is essential that expats remember these, especially if they are learning the language in a country where it is used extensively. There is no doubt that learning Arabic is of significant importance to expats in Bahrain.
Here are some of the key benefits associated with having a grasp of Arabic in the Middle East:
It is a well-known fact that learning Arabic can help expats learn about various aspects of the Bahraini community such as their values, beliefs, habits and religion. With practically every global manufacturer having already released or actively developing at least one electric vehicle (EV) in their portfolios, the batterypowered beasts are challenging the internal combustion engine for the future of our roads.

Strike up a conversation about the current motoring industry and it’s inevitable that all roads will lead to… well, not Rome, but the relentless juggernaut that is electric vehicles. Whilst they are the bane of the staunchest petrolheads, there’s no denying their importance in the modern landscape and the simple fact that as a collective civilisation we have to be more climate-aware. The Kingdom is no exception, with EVs proliferating local dealership forecourts and initiatives to boost infrastructure with more charging ports well under way.
EVs would appear to be a relatively new phenomenon, but did you know that they were the most popular form of automobile in the early days? Scotland’s Robert Anderson was the earliest pioneer of electric vehicles, building a motorised carriage sometime between 1832 and 1839. It was a crude invention; as batteries were not yet rechargeable, it was more of a show-off trick than a transportation device.

With front-wheel drive, four horsepower, room for 12 people and a reported top speed of 32kmph, it had 24 battery cells that needed recharging every 50 miles.
Interest was piqued. By the turn of the 20th century, many people began swapping in their horses and carts for motorised vehicles. As a result, the automobile rapidly grew in popularity and the battle for the future of mobility commenced. The options? Steam, petrol or electric. Electric cars won; they did not emit any unpleasant pollutants, require changing gears or have long start-up times. This meant that they were easier to drive and they were much quieter too.
However, this momentum would all come to a slow end post-WW1, with the creation of Henry Ford’s cost-efficient assembly line and the wider availability of petrol. EVs were dead and would remain so until the 1970s, when oil prices shot up and gasoline shortages meant that car companies started exploring the possibilities of resurrecting them.
For instance, General Motors developed a prototype for an urban EV and even NASA helped raise the profile when their electric Lunar rover became the first manned vehicle on the moon. However, EVs still suffered from several drawbacks compared to petrolpowered cars including limited range and slow top speeds. Consumers simply weren’t interested.
Released in Japan in 1997, the Prius became the world’s first mass-produced hybrid electric vehicle. When it was released worldwide in 2000, it became an instant success.

Not that this deterred scientists from trying over the next 20 years, until the big breakthrough arrived: the Toyota Prius.
The snowball had started rolling. Tesla Motors was formed in 2003 and three years later started producing a luxury electric sports car that could go more than 320km on a single charge. Nissan raised the competition with its launch of the Nissan LEAF in 2010.
The snowball is now an avalanche. New battery technologies have helped to improve range and cut EV battery costs by 97 percent since 1991, making them more affordable for consumers. Analysts conservatively predict that by 2030, EVs will reach 20 percent of sales worldwide with more than 200m on the roads, but the real figure could be much higher.

Ultra-luxury manufacturer, Aston Martin, is increasing employment at its Gaydon headquarters with the creation of more than 100 jobs in its manufacturing facility as it prepares to unleash its next generation of sportscars.
In 2023, Aston Martin will commence the launch of the highly anticipated future models, which will further enhance its focus on ultra-luxury, high-performance and driving intensity. More than 100 new automotive technicians are now to be recruited to support production at the British manufacturer’s world-class centre for sports car design and engineering. The recruitment drive will include an offer of full-time permanent employment to agency colleagues currently working at Aston Martin sites on a temporary basis, including those who have supported the ramp-up of DBX707 production in St Athan, following the successful launch of the model in 2022.
Chief People Officer of Aston Martin Lagonda, Simon Smith, said: “As Aston Martin prepares to ramp-up production and launch the first of our next generation of sports cars, we are delighted to offer high-quality permanent employment opportunities for our valued agency colleagues. Kia UK has won two awards at the 2023 What Car? Car of the Year Awards, including a major category win for the Kia Sportage.
The Kia Sportage was named ‘Family SUV of the Year’ ahead of others in the most popular and hotly contested vehicle segment in the UK. The latest Kia Sportage was introduced at the start of 2022. It was the UK’s sixth best-selling
new car last year, with 29,655 units of the SUV being purchased by UK buyers through 2022. This version is the first in five generations of Sportage to offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid options.

The Kia EV9 is due to be revealed later in 2023, with UK deliveries set to commence towards the end of the year. The large electric SUV is the next EV due to be launched under the brand’s ‘Plan S’ long-term strategy for electrification leadership.

What is the creative industry?
The creative economy includes all those jobs where the core offering or core work is linked to arts, music, creative design, etc. This includes film and TV, publishing, museums, music and the performing arts, computer programming, crafts, and architecture and interior design. It also includes creative occupations which are not part of creative businesses, such as design, advertising etc.
Let’s look at the numbers – you may be surprised. It is a very large economy in terms of employment and value with cultural and creative industries providing 6.2 percent of all employment – that’s a whopping 50 million jobs worldwide. The global exports of creative goods increased from USD 419 million in 2010 to USD 524 million in 2020, while world exports of creative services increased from USD 487 billion to almost USD1.1 trillion

Books, get made into movies or series – sometimes both. Movies are no longer dependent on traditional cinema and OTT platforms provide a platform for more creative spaces at smaller budgets. Creative industries are also significant users of technology services. Music, videos and content creation is
an obvious one. Then there is VFX technology, collaborative software for recording, or NFT’s in the art space. AI is being used increasingly across creative work as well especially within the customer interactive spaces. Room for more – lots of it.
The linkages that this creative industry provides are psychological, social and economic. Creative work brings out human emotions. It appeals to an intangible, unpredictable part of our lives. The unpredictability, is the other side of flexibility, so it’s always changing and the linkages are changing with it. Employment, flexibility and emotional connect – tangible, measurable, yet esoteric. It’s a potent industry with so many business opportunities between the spaces. Are you going to find a gap to fill?

“Whatever you give a woman, she will make greater. If you give her a house, she’ll give you a home. If you give her groceries, she’ll give you a meal. If you give her a smile, she’ll give you her heart. She multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.”
In 1954, these words were famously spoken by Nobel Prize-winning British author William Golding, author of Lord of the Flies. There are several quotes that speak of the sheer strength, determination and capabilities of women in our lives and rightfully so. As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day, we would like to highlight this year’s campaign: #EmbraceEquity. The goal, as always, for each and every one of us, is to not just view the occasion as a single day to celebrate, but rather a catalyst to drive positive change. The belief behind this year’s campaign is that gender equity must be an essential part of society creating an inclusive world for the social, economic, cultural and political advancement of women.

The first Bahraini Women’s Day was launched in 2008 by HRH Princess Sabeeka. The spectacular monument is the outcome of an architectural youth competition named ‘Fakhr’ (Pride), which was organised by SCW in cooperation with Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities in 2017 to mark the Bahraini Women’s Day. Dr. Sahar states that one of the best practices that patients can follow is to reduce stress levels by engaging in activities that keep them happy, being with people they love and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
“A PCO journey may be long and tedious, but it is important for you to stay strong and never give up. You can do it! Be sure to make changes in your lifestyle such as having a healthy and balanced diet, increase water intake and exercise. In addition, be sure to monitor your blood pressure, sugar, and cholesterol levels as they may require certain medications,” she explains.

Given that Eman changed jobs many times, one of the most significant changes she had to deal with was related to the personalities of people. “Every boss has a different leadership style, every team has different characteristics, every member of the team requires a different way of management,” she says. “Accommodating all these types of personalities was one of the challenges that I overcome by building my emotional and political intelligence over the years.”
“Being a female leading a team of males or even females was another challenge; unlike my male colleagues, I had to prove that I deserve this position all the time by excelling in what I do, and demonstrating the value I add,” she adds.
Through her contributions, recently published in Woman This Month, Ms. Deabil has reflected on women’s representation in the boardroom.
“Although the percentage of women representation in Bahrain listed companies is 5.9 percent (2022), I think our kingdom has come a long way in empowering and enabling women at different fronts,” she says.
“Today, what we’re looking at is not quantity (represented by higher percentages) but rather, quality. To have a real impact, we need strong, active, knowledgeable and experienced women at board level to drive change and contribute positively and effectively to decision making,” she adds.
As for young women pursuing leadership roles, Eman encourages them to work on several factors including building a strong value system, developing a personal brand and expanding their network. “You must also learn as you go as learnability is a great characteristic of future leaders. In addition, you should build your experience; work in something you like and excel in it. It’s never too late to find your passion,” she says.
As for balancing personal and professional responsibilities, Eman says: “I think it all starts by defining your goals in life, and setting the right priorities to them, assessing those goals as you go in life, and keep practicing this prioritisation exercise. Many women have already proven that they are able to juggle many balls at the same time, switch hats and practice multiple roles.”

To help children learn the value of honesty and integrity, aside from modeling these very values in daily interactions, it is also helpful to understand the different types of lies. Ouiam El Hassani explains why children lie and what reactions can be helpful or hurtful.
Children will lie, tell fibs, stretch a tale and tattle-tale—it’s actually a sign of intelligence. Nevertheless, lying is sometimes inappropriate and as parents it can be difficult to deal with lies.
Lies can come in many shapes and forms—fantasy, wishful thinking, a way to deal with hurt feelings, or the hopes of avoiding consequences and

These are commonly told by preschoolers and are an exploration of reality and fantasy.

What to avoid: Try not to tell your child they are being ridiculous or silly as it can crush their creativity and these fibs are actually very healthy expressions of play.

What to do: Acknowledge the ideas behind the lies while also offering alternatives that are empathetic and reflect your values.
For instance, you can trying saying, “Oh 10 pieces of candy would be delicious and tooth brushing can take a while. It’s just not healthy for you, I care about you and your teeth. How about two pieces of candy and we can sing a song while brushing?” It’s perfectly okay to stick to your values and set a limit. What is important is to recognise your child’s wishes and communicate that so he knows you are listening.
What to avoid: Try not to lecture or tell your child their wishes are unimportant.
Often children will lie to get their way, to make sure the outcome is in their favour or most commonly to avoid being punished.
What to do: If you know that your child is lying and they have acted in a way that has broken, destroyed or otherwise harmed something or someone it can be really beneficial to just listen at first.
Ask sincerely: “What can you tell me about this?” to start a dialogue. If you have encouraged your child to tell the truth in the past it is likely that they will once again cooperate with you.
If you have used punishment in the past, it’s never too late to look at positive alternatives. Go ahead and explain to your child that you value and welcome honesty.
Then follow-through with your words (otherwise it would be modeling how to lie) and find an appropriate solution with your child. How can you help your child repair the situation? How can you encourage your child to make amends for telling a lie and to whoever may have been hurt by the lie?
What to avoid: Calling your child a liar or demanding the truth and immediately punishing is likely to teach your child to be sneakier the next time around. It creates a negative cycle of communication to avoid punishment. There is a more positive and helpful way to help your child learn to tell the truth.

In the latest edition of ‘The Things We Don't Say’, Farrah Saville looks at the women she draws inspiration from as a mother this International Women's Day.
OnMarch 8, women worldwide will observe International Women's Day. I say observe because often, it feels like there isn't a lot to celebrate. We look at some of the atrocities against women worldwide, and it feels like what are we celebrating? When I look at my daughter, I ask myself “What world am I raising this young lady in?”
There are so many things that women need to consider- safety, how they dress, managing it all by balancing a career and family, growing their careers versus giving up their careers, getting married as the biological clock ticks away - the list is endless.
The negativities can be endless, but this month, I choose to celebrate raising a girl and International Woman's Day because, from my personal experiences as a woman, I have found that being a woman is AWESOME and should indeed be celebrated.
Here's my list of ten women I am inspired by to help me navigate being a mom, and help my daughter to see reason in a world that can sometimes be difficult.
1. Oprah Winfrey - Undeniably one of the most inspiring success stories in the world. Her work to build an empire and empower women inspires anyone looking to build a life they love. She has inspired me in many ways. My favourite Oprah quote is, "Be thankful for what you have; you'll have more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never have enough."
2. Greta Thunberg - Through her activism and the #FridaysForFuture movement, Greta has inspired a new generation to take a stand against the global climate crisis.
3. Beyoncé - A talented musician, performer, entrepreneur and philanthropist, Beyoncé has been using her voice and artistry to stand up for gender and racial justice.
4. Malala Yousafzai - At the young age of 17, Malala was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. For my daughter, I can only hope to raise her with the same value for education.
5. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez - AOC, as she is widely known, has a vital energy. She is so brave despite being so young and has qualities I would love my daughter to have.
6. Amal Alamuddin - One of the world's
most high-profile and celebrated attorneys, Amal Alamuddin has become an international symbol of empowerment and resilience.
7. My mother - She has broken the mould and a few rules to raise her children to be independent and kind.
8. Fatima Meer - Fatima Meer has made tremendous strides in advancing South African race relations. Meer's ability to understand intersectionality before it even became a term inspires me to teach my daughter to look beyond her struggles myopically.
9. Serena Williams – The world-renowned professional tennis player has set an example for many generations, inspiring young women to find the strength and ambition to accomplish their dreams. I hope Williams' strength inspires my daughter.
10. Melanie Perkins – This CEO is the woman behind the design website Canva; she founded the company on her own with zero Silicon Valley connections and is currently worth USD 3.6 billion.
Where are you from and what's the thing you love most about your hometown?
I am from Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The thing I love most about Kyiv is its beautiful nature which I have never come across anywhere else in the world. We have colourful parks, monasteries, churches, and beautiful architecture which I miss so much. Then there are special Ukrainian dishes that I miss… especially those cooked by my mum.
What is an achievement you are most proud of?
I spent 10 years in hospitality and progressed without any help, so I would say it is where I am now in my career. I also have a master’s degree in International Economics and Business Development and will soon be finishing my MBA too.
Do you have any hidden talents?
What was the name of your first pet? What made it unique?
I’ve only had one pet in my life - a cat named Masha with very unique markings in black, brown, grey and white. My family adopted her when I was just a child, and she was quite little too; so we grew up together and she was with us for almost 17 years. She was completely different and had a crazy personality.
What's the best advice you can give our readers?
Something I know for sure is that nothing is impossible in this life. So, I would say dream big and fill your life with beautiful moments.
Of course! I actually finished music school in Kyiv and play a Ukrainian instrument called bayan - a type of accordion but with a different set up of buttons. So, I performed in parts of the region - it was quite an interesting time of my life.

What is your favourite movie and why?
I love catastrophes, thrillers and detective stories. I would have to say that my favourite movie is The Mummy which follows the adventurer Rick O’ Connell (Brendan Frasier). I was quite interested in Egypt and its history so The Mummy trilogy is a favourite.
The first would have to be emotional strength as I believe women are emotionally mature and balanced. Then I would have to say the ability to multi-task. Women can manage their work, kids, relationship, home and more in just 24 hours.
