CAMPAIGNING FOR CHANGE Bahrain’s large expatriate population has long faced an issue with inheritance, in particular accessing funds after the death of their loved ones in the Kingdom. We spoke to Indian Legal Consultant V K Thomas, who has long fought for a change in laws to make this process easier for expats.
V K Thomas has been in Bahrain for 45 years, after initially qualifying and being licensed in India as an Advocate. He now works as a legal consultant specialising in corporate matters, and also coordinates with his Partner Adv. Wafa Al Ansari, a Bahraini Advocate of the Court of Cassation on cases concerning personal affairs namely marriage, divorce, inheritance and more. He has long since campaigned for Bahrain’s expatriate population, 52.6 per cent of 1.5 million, to access the inheritance funds of their loved ones, should they unfortunately pass away. Most of the laws that govern the personal matters of non-Muslim expatriates, including this matter, are the same since 1971 when the expatriate proportion was a mere 17.5 per cent. There is an obvious discord between the two, and with the advent of the pandemic, this has been exacerbated. As per the current systems, in the event of the death of an expatriate, all bank accounts, including any joint accounts, are immediately frozen until such time that a court order is issued by the court in Bahrain. A certificate to confirm the ‘legal heirs’ or a court order issued by the passport-issuing country of the www.bahrainthismonth.com
deceased then needs to be produced, which can take between three-to-six months. In addition, four-to-six more are usually lost in waiting for the Bahrain court order to release these funds, on top of other hurdles. “From a humane perspective, for several expatriates this can mean no access to any funds, sometimes even for funeral proceedings or repatriation of the body,” says Mr Thomas. “To make this worse, there are oftentimes children involved and living expenses of families or even tickets home that cannot be paid for due to a complete lockdown of all family funds.” Along with his partner Adv. Wafa Al Ansari, who deals with litigation, Mr Thomas has detailed simple steps which could make the process far simpler. He explains: “Simple steps that could be taken could include: (i) allowing operation of bank accounts with ‘either or survivor’ or ‘nominations’; or (ii) exempt salary or joint accounts from needing a court order; or (iii) limiting the amount of money that can be withdrawn per month until the court order or (iv) allowing wills to be notarised here and allow operation of bank accounts by the executor based on the will without any further
process or court order. “With globalisation and banking systems so well connected, perhaps the time is right now to ease the very painful process of gathering up one’s life after losing an earning member. A change in the law and rules that govern the settlements of estates of non-Muslims in Bahrain is an urgent need of the hour.” Mr Thomas has highlighted the matter to various authorities and in various seminars and workshops and he even writes a weekly column in a local Indian language newspaper. Until such time as the law is possibly changed, Mr Thomas advises families to have separate bank accounts as opposed to joint accounts. This is the only option available at the moment to have access to cash. “Whether expatriates or citizens, the money earned in Bahrain is the result of hard work and families depend on it,” he says. “For a country as benevolent and welcoming of expatriates as Bahrain, it seems surprising that residents who spend their lives earning for and adding to the Bahrain ecosystem, should be denied a basic comfort that their loved ones will be given what is rightly theirs on time – without a legal battle.” May 2022 17

DIPLOMATIC JUBILATION
Bahrain and Germany are celebrating the 50th anniversary of its long-standing diplomatic partnership, with bilateral relations beginning on May 17, 1972. As part of our special supplement, we spoke to the German Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, HE Kai Boeckmann, about his diplomatic career and his plans to bolster ties between the two nations. 20 May 2022
T
hank you for speaking to us Your Excellency. Could you give our readers a brief summary of your experience and background prior to coming to Bahrain? I came to Bahrain after serving with the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 24 years. This is a typical career path in the ministry, where you gain experience in several postings. In my case, it was foreign postings in Jericho, Buenos Aires, Rome and Cairo. Of course, I had several stints in the ministry in Germany and gained experience in consular and press work, while also serving as deputy chief of mission. While I was in headquarters, I was repeatedly involved in reform projects, which may sound technical, but were a good preparation for the administrative tasks needed to lead a mission.
How do you compare life in Bahrain to your previous postings? I was very curious to come to the Gulf after having served in other Arabic posts in Jericho and Cairo. I must say that I find life in Bahrain very, very special. The first thing that strikes you is that I don›t commute for hours like in mega cities, but I can reach all interlocutors, friends and partners mostly within minutes! This is something which characterises the life in Bahrain. Our contacts with the Bahraini government are very close and direct, as they are with parliament and the business community. Furthermore, the German community is very tightly knit and very supportive as we see when there are charity events. I had the privilege to host almost the entire German community and their families during www.bahrainthismonth.com
Germany in Bahrain occasions like the St Nicholas celebrations before Christmas in this residence garden, which would certainly not have been possible in other postings with a larger population. On May 17, the Kingdom of Bahrain and Germany will be celebrating their Golden Jubilee anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. What are your own thoughts about this momentous occasion? My thoughts go back to the late Amir, HRH Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and Federal President, Gustav Heinemann, who established the beginning of our diplomatic relationship. These were different times then, where Germany was divided in the aftermath of World War 2, and both Germany and Bahrain became members of the United Nations and helped shape the international community. My thoughts also go to all those Bahraini and German citizens who helped to shape and bring into life our relationship in so many ways. I am grateful to all the ambassadors who preceded me and whose work I can now build upon in my daily work. Finally, I am grateful to pioneers like Bahraini businessmen who discovered the potential of German products and the visionaries who established the DHL regional hub back in 1976. What plans does the embassy have to celebrate this auspicious occasion in May? We hope to be able to profit from the remarkable success of Bahrain in combatting COVID-19, and to celebrate with a series of events together with our colleagues from the embassies both: here and in Berlin.
Instagram account and we are very happy that we can interact directly with our followers and receive their feedback. It is also a matter of transparency; we want to show our daily work and not be an embassy which hides behind high walls.
the Kingdom have four wheels! I see the potential in the future for further trade in this regard because German car manufacturers have great solutions for e-mobility and Bahrain with its small size represents the ideal place to realise the vision of carbon-free traffic.
Once the celebrations are over, what do you consider to be your primary focus to further bolster relations between the two countries? I think that we can work together in the fields of climate action and energy transition. Together, we have the capacity to reduce gas emissions. Germany needs to replace fossil fuels with alternative energies, especially hydrogen, and Bahrain as a classical producer of fossil fuels has the potential also to diversify and to make use of resources like solar energy and wind energy which are available in this region.
How many German citizens are currently residents in Bahrain? How has the number grown since the establishment of diplomatic relations? We have around 500 German citizens currently living in Bahrain, and the number has been quite stable over the past years. It’s not a huge number, but it’s a very tight-knit and vibrant community and we feel that our German citizens here are the best ambassadors of Germany to Bahrain because they represent the variety and diversity of German society including university professors, doctors, engineers and technicians.
What is the current status of trade between Bahrain and Germany from volumes and projections? Can you identify specific areas of trade and collaboration that would increase in the near future? We are very happy that despite the pandemic, trade between Germany and Bahrain is actually on the rise. Europe is Bahrain›s most important trading partner after Saudi Arabia and Germany represents a large part of the trade exchange between Europe and Bahrain. Speaking about the numbers in 2020, Bahraini exports to Germany amounted to BHD50m, about a third more than in 2019. German imports to Bahrain amounted to BHD203m which is again an increase of around 30 percent. Of course, the most welcome German goods in
Is there anything else you would like to add? I would like to thank on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of our diplomatic relations both His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and the people of Bahrain for all the support they have given over the past 50 years to our diplomatic relationship and to the relations between the Bahraini people and the German people in general.
What do you consider to be the most relevant and significant achievements of the embassy in Bahrain and German citizens over the past 50 years, and how has that contributed to the growth of bilateral relations between the two countries? No doubt the high level visits of His Majesty King Hamad to Germany in 2008 and the visit of the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to Bahrain in 2010. We have had a number of successes and momentous events over the years, such as the embassy offering language courses to enable Bahrainis to learn German for study and work purposes and offering business round table networking. Since your own arrival in Bahrain, what do you consider the most significant achievement so far? One interesting step which we have done is to open up more to the general public, through our activity on social media. In 2018, we started a ‘Germany in Bahrain’ www.bahrainthismonth.com

our excellency. You’ve had a distinguished career since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1981. Can you give us a brief summary about your diplomatic postings and missions so far? In 1981, I was the Director of Finance and Administration at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A few years later, I went to Glasgow to continue my education and receive my master’s degree. Four years later, I had my first diplomatic post as the Deputy Head of Mission in London – a post which I held for almost five and a half years. I was then appointed as a permanent representative to Geneva dealing with the multilateral issues and, of course, a nonresidential ambassador and permanent representative to Vienna as well. It was then that I’d spent five and a half years in London
22 May 2022
and almost four years in Geneva. This was followed by appointment as the Under Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from August, 2009 to almost October, 2017. Finally, in February 2018, I went to Berlin as the Kingdom of Bahrain’s ambassador to Germany, where I have been since. How do you find living in Germany and what would be your key observations about it? To be honest, and to keep a long story short, starting with Berlin as a German city; I believe if you do not like Berlin, something is wrong with you, not the city and so you have to adjust yourself. It’s a beautiful city with a very rich heritage. I can say it’s ‘a kitchen of the world’ in the sense that you can find a lot of think tanks. As a diplomat, it’s a very important post with a lot to cover. It’s one of the biggest economies
in Europe, and it has a lot of areas where we can have a good cooperation. In terms of diplomatic works, it’s not all concentrated in Berlin, you are dealing with 16 regional states which is very challenging. What do you consider to be your most significant achievement so far in your posting in Germany? Oh, there are plenty of achievements! Of these, the one that I would consider the most important is our success in increasing our trade between Bahrain and Germany. As I’d mentioned, Germany is one of the biggest European economies and so, we found a lot of areas for cooperation and have been very successful since I was there. In fact, despite the pandemic, we’ve always had an increase in our trade and exchange investment between Bahrain and Germany.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
Germany in Bahrain For instance, last year we recorded an increase of six percent in our trade with Germany, which is very important as it is an achievement considering the pandemic. Prior to that, we would record even higher percentages, over 20 percent even. Would you say that trade is your most important concern? It’s not our most important concern. It is such a wonderful country and we enjoy a very friendly relationship. Politically, we have a very good understanding that we have been working together for, which has resulted in us celebrating 50 years of our diplomatic relation. We never had challenges which were difficult to be solve in political and multilateral fields. I believe that there are areas in the economical field that we can improve. So, while trade is one of the most important things, that doesn’t mean that we don’t concentrate on other areas which we believe have better opportunities. We can work together and increase the exchange of trade and have more investment from Germany towards Bahrain and open new areas of cooperation between our countries. How many Bahraini expatriates live in Germany? Usually, Bahrainis don’t go for economic reasons to live to Europe, but they go for other purposes like better education and aspects of the services sectors. So, the number is really very limited. I think we have around a hundred, the majority of them being students in different fields, but mainly in the medical field. We also have some of our doctors who are practicing their experience in Germany. These doctors have also really contributed at certain German hospitals during COVID. They’ve really been recognised as people who contributed in the fight against COVID. We also have a small number of people who lived there due to some business, mainly in real estate. What activities does the embassy of Bahrain in Germany undertake to promote corporation and unity between the two countries?
www.bahrainthismonth.com
We have a great political understanding with Germany, and found that visits between the two countries with high-level dignitaries to be successful as we found has new areas of cooperation. Recently, our Minister of Foreign Affairs was in Berlin to attend the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue. Here, we found areas of cooperation which we have been working very hard for, especially moving towards the target of net zero carbon emissions for which the Kingdom of Bahrain has plans, with His Majesty King Hamad and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa projecting the year 2060 to be our target for zero emissions. We hope to reduce these emissions by 35 percent by the year 2030 and are hence looking into alternative energy options. Germany has a lot of areas of potential cooperation where this is concerned such green energy, hydrogen, water waste management, and renewable energy. These are very new areas for cooperation and we’ve had two workshops, in this regard, with stakeholders from Bahrain and Germany. What image of Bahrain do you like to project through the embassy in Germany?
headquarters in Bahrain - something that everybody’s very proud of. We are also extremely proud to support His Majesty’s King Hamad Global Centre for Peaceful Coexistence, whose objective is to promote peaceful ideals worldwide, especially at times like these. Our project reflects the reality of life in Bahrain which is the perfect example of how people can live together despite any differences in race, religion or nationality. What plans does the Bahrain embassy in Germany have to celebrate the 50th anniversary of bilateral relations? I’d like to first say that just as we have with our leadership, His Majesty King Hamad, and HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, the leadership of the president of Germany, FrankWalter Steinmeier, the new German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and Angela Merkel before him has given us the boost of working together and having a better cooperation. We have already begun our celebrations which we shall continue until the end of the year. We are planning a kind of concert, a gathering with businessmen in Germany and articles to highlight these historic relations in the press. We will also be producing memorabilia for the occasion. I am positive that the relations between Germany and Bahrain will continue for many years to come and look forward to our two countries. celebration of a Diamond Jubilee in the future.
Bahrain has always been known for its friendly business environment which we try to promote. For the last three or four years, the Kingdom has been ranked as one of the top five countries, which has been able to attract direct investment globally which is an important point to highlight. People, not only in Germany, but Commenting on the diplomatic relations between the whole of Europe should know about this and why Bahrain is the two countries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Chief attractive to businesses. Bahrain of European Affairs, Ahmed Ebrahim Al Qarainees, has an advantage of skilled said: “These 50 years mark a very strong, lasting workers, advanced regulations, a and varied relationship with Germany. The great social life, environment and Kingdom of Bahrain has worked very closely with roads, and freedom of faith, which our friends in Germany and our ambassador who is why a lot of companies is leading the efforts with the guidance of His consider having their
Majesty King Hamad and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister in a complete strategy which includes working with our friends to develop an understanding of global coexistence as well as peace and prosperity across the world. Based on those ideas, they trickle down to particular policies and initiatives inside of Bahrain. We can work together with our German friends for education and of course the new global challenge of the environment. So, we look forward to continuing to achieve new milestones with our German friends.”

THE
SOCIAL FABRIC
On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of diplomatic relations between Germany and Bahrain, we speak to German and Bahraini citizens who have helped bolster these ties.
Abduljalil Al Ansari – Founder of the Bahraini-German Friendship Society and the first Bahraini to receive the German Medal of Merit – First Class. “My relationship with Germany began with my first trip to Cologne in 1965, where I attended an international exhibition where my personal and business relationships started. I think it’s very important for people to understand culture, from any visitors from Bahrain to Germany or vice-versa, whether it’s music, people, sights or more. As for commercial interest, I believe that German business relationships are important to us because not only are their goods and services reliable, but they are of exceptional quality. I am very proud to see the relationship which I believe I started in the 1960s when there were no diplomatic relations or embassies. It was up to me, my friends and colleagues to inform people about Germany, and I asked Bahrain and Saudi Arabian authorities to import products from there.”
Ali Khonji – A member of one of the oldest merchant business families in Bahrain, which started in 1898. “Our company was honoured to build the new German Embassy chancellery building which was handed over in 2011 and inaugurated by then-Ambassador, His Excellency Hubert Lang. We are extremely proud to have offered our services to the German government and we hope to continue this for years to come. I love to spend time in the south of Germany in the Black Forest area, since one of my favourite hobbies is walking. It’s one of my favourite holiday destinations. I believe there needs to be an International German School in Bahrain, which will boost the economic, cultural and educational relationship between the Kingdom of Bahrain and Germany in future.”
Birgit Hobaugh and Mohamed Alsharqi – Bahraini German International Services Birgit: “I came here more than 20 years ago, when it was a totally different world than it is today! I was made extremely welcome since my first day and it has felt like home. I still tell everybody who will listen how lovely a place it is. Mohammed and I opened up a company offering many services, in areas including travel and medical, between Bahrain and Germany. We have a lot of tourists coming to Bahrain, and I have found that as an official tour guide, Germans love Bahrain as I do! It’s great to show them all the important sites and history that we have, it’s real and traditional, which I don’t think is found as much in other Arab countries.” Mohamed: “When I invited Birgit to Bahrain for the first time, I was delighted that she loved the country and decided to stay. She has really adapted to the culture and gone deep into the Bahraini life, even though she couldn’t speak the language at first. I’m particularly interested in motorsports so I am proud to be the first Bahraini to start an official travel agency for motorsports between the two countries, offering up to seven tours a year for motorcyclists from Bahrain and the GCC. 28 May 2022

Germany in Bahrain Uwe Torsten - RCSI Bahrain Professor and Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology “Prior to moving to Bahrain, I’d worked in Berlin for 24 years. The first time I visited was in 2019 when I worked as a part time consultant at The King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH). However, being an academic, I applied to RCSI. I believe Germany has a great reputation in Arab countries, and so I could proceed from where I left off in Berlin. There are a lot of healthcare manufacturers in Germany, especially in the south of the country. When in the operating theatre in Bahrain, I realised that we have a lot of German equipment from brands such as Siemens and Ecolab which are of a very high-standard and appreciated here in Bahrain. I’m interested in archaeology and geological issues so when I arrived here, I immediately looked into the 5000-year-old history of Bahrain and the Dilmun culture and was very interested when I made a comparision to what was in Europe, Egypt and elsewhere. It’s astonishing.”
Nabeel Ajoor – Bahraini businessman and Member of Bahrain-German Business Society “We have a family business which deals in textiles, furniture and property. We have a very old connection with Germany, starting with my father who had gone to Frankfurt following the war to get his eyes operated on. Since then, we would visit Germany often, which I have driven around extensively exploring Hannover, Hamburg and Stuttgart. Germany has always been associated with quality in Bahrain, with my mother trusting their products too. We had imported very special curtains for the Bahrain Defence Force Hospital from Hamburg, aside from technical products and fabric for our furnishings business. I have released two books, including one which highlights the heritage of Bahrain and inspires nostalgia. German people have always been friendly so I often host members of the German community at my house so they may experience the Bahraini culture.”
Professor Dr. Bernd Hoefer - Chairman & CEO of A9C Capital WLL “I’m a German businessman who has been based in Bahrain for over 15 years. For the first two years I worked for a very senior member of the Royal family following which I set up my company. In 2020, I co-founded a technology spin-off of the German Aerospace Centre in Germany. I am also the Chairman of the German Business Roundtable Bahrain. I have a scientific background, but am an economist having worked all my career at the interface between economy and technology. I’ve worked closely together with literally each and every space agency including NASA, JAXA, ISRO, ROSCOMOS and the European Space Agency. I believe that Bahrain and Germany have the potential to collaborate in the formation of technology-led industry in the Kingdom. I also don’t see any reason why Bahrain shouldn’t strive to become an automative manufacturing country, notably for electric cars. Bahrain has aluminium, top-notch logistics facilities, connectivity to the entire world, FTAs in place and other ingredients for great success.” www.bahrainthismonth.com
Ingo Giesel - Director of Operations, Shelf Drilling (Global SantaFe Services - LLC) “I work in KSA for a drilling contractor company that supplies drilling rigs for major oil companies. My wife and I have lived in seven different countries – Indonesia, Vietnam, Norway, The Netherlands, Scotland, the UAE and Egypt. After living in Egypt for three years, we moved to Bahrain where we have now lived for the last 11 years. Bahrain also has an advantage of having a great variety of restaurants which my wife and I dine at to enjoy some good food. Considering that we’ve lived in so many other countries, we really enjoy living in Bahrain as it is safe and there’s plenty to enjoy. I also enjoy working in a cultural environment, as presented by the region, and I believe everyone should have this experience. When thinking of German brands, one of the most important one that’s comes to my mind is DHL since it is a major logistics provider and logistics in the current market is a problem because of ongoing issues. The other one would be Lufthansa which is the official carrier and keeps a connection between the people in Bahrain and Germany. Others that come to mind are Porsche, Mercedes and BMW.”

STANDING THE TEST OF TIME Established in 1976, the Bahrain-based company Universal Electro-Engineering (UNEECO) has long had a strong relationship with German products and services to meet the diverse and changing needs of the region’s electrical and electronics engineering sectors. We spoke to UNEECO COO, Jayashankar Viswanathan, to find out more.
U
NEECO’s story is certainly an inspiring one. The company established its first assembly plant in Salmabad, later moved to Mina Salman Industrial Area where it operated for nearly 15 years, before finally settling in its state-of-the-art facility in BIIP at Bahrain’s Al Hidd Industrial Area. It positions itself as a leading manufacturer of low-voltage switchgear products in the Kingdom. The company markets various high-voltage equipment such as vacuum switchgear, ring main units and transformers which are manufactured by well-known companies globally. Of these worldwide entities which supply its products, it has a particular affinity for those made in Germany. Mr. Viswanathan explains: “Germany is one of the finest engineering countries in the world historically, so we know we will always get quality from there. “Robust, strong and reliable are key elements which come to mind when thinking about their products, with shelf lives often surpassing any other, and their services are very good.” Originally from India, Mr. Viswanathan has a storied career in the engineering industry. His journey with UNEECO began as a manager in 2005 and since then, he has progressed to becoming a board member and director alongside his operational duties. His ongoing relationship with German brands has been one of the highlights of his tenure. Notably, UNEECO was heavily involved in the construction of the Kraft Foods plant in the Kingdom and used entirely German products in the manufacture, knowing that they would stand the test of time. “German brands account for 10 percent of our entire business revenue, some USD4 million” he explains. “It started in 1979 with Raychem, now part of TE Connectivity, and now includes Exide industrial batteries and Stulz energy-efficient temperature and humidity management technology. “We love working with our German partners because we learn so much from them. There really is a noticeable quality with their products that you just don’t get from other places.” 30 May 2022

CENTERING IN ON CUSTOMER-CENTRICITY
I
n a world of globalisation, digitisation, fierce competition, and most recently, a pandemic of epic disruption, customer-centricity has taken prime spot on business agendas. Just about all companies have come to realise how critical it is to shift to a more customer-centric approach as a means of differentiation and to build competitive advantage. Today, with a plethora of knowledge available at the touch of a button, and endless options at one’s fingertips, customercentricity dictates brand loyalty and profit margins. But how do you go about creating a truly customer-centric business? You need to start with the customer first. The driving force is to make it your mission to help your customers reach their business goals. This means thinking less about how much you are selling and more on how a product or service helps customers thrive in their businesses. You focus on what your customers want to achieve and you evolve your organisation around their needs, becoming an integral, and indispensable ally to their growth journey. It requires a complete change in mind-
34 May 2022
By DHL Express MENA set away from operational to placing the customer at the heart of the process and developing outwards from there. The most important component of this equation is to align and motivate all teams to have the customer’s success as their highest priority. Every single person working in a customer-centric organisation should be made to feel that they have an important role to play in this process. This comes down to culture and training; both of which are equally important to cultivate a customer-first mindset and inspire people to take on the responsibility of exceeding customer expectations. Commitment from the top is also important and goes beyond simply discussing customer matters in the boardroom. Senior management have to be just as involved in driving customer success as any frontline employee. They are responsible for building that culture and driving that momentum internally, while setting an example for all teams to follow. Today, customers demand tailored solutions and constant innovation. This is not an easy
task and requires continuous client discussions, agility, flexibility and monitoring of trends. It also requires organisations to allow their customers to be part of the innovation journey. Lastly, capturing customer feedback and converting this into tangible improvements is paramount. Customer surveys are very common across businesses. But while they are valuable tools, they also represent a very impersonal way of capturing feedback via a static questionnaire. Customer-centric companies go one step further: they engage in frequent direct dialogue, facilitating the exchange of ideas and views because they know that sharing insights and knowledge leads to natural improvements. Customer centricity requires a fundamental shift in the way a company thinks and operates; but it needs to be approached as an ever-evolving journey and not an end destination, and companies need to be vested in taking this route which is no longer an option but has become a necessity for business survival.

HIDDEN GEMS AT LANTERNS!
dining
When you think of a relaxing ambience and tasty Indian food, Lanterns Restaurant immediately comes to mind. However, unbeknownst to many, the outlet features a number of hidden gems from around the world on its menu which are just as delicious. Bahrain This Month was invited to sample some of them and soak in the atmosphere of the popular Adliya spot.
Y
ou are undoubtedly in for a treat when you stroll into the familiar surroundings of Lanterns. When asked to do a review, I jumped at the chance to reacquaint myself with their cuisine, not realising that I would be in for a surprise as I would be pushed out of my comfort zone to try some of the outlet’s lesserknown but equally-fantastic offerings. Did you know, for example, that Lanterns has a plethora of Thai options? Me neither! Opting for the element of surprise as the welcoming, friendly staff brought out delicacies from their conveyor belt of mystery, it was exciting to see what would be coming first. Alas, I started off light with the colourful Spring Asian Salad. What made this so special was the inclusion of Edamame, one of my favourite snacks in the world, which complemented the green leaves, bean sprouts, red lettuce and cherry tomatoes. The main courses, which were soon served at my table, were a very welcome sight as I was feeling particularly ravenous. I’m not usually a big seafood lover, but I was swayed by the fresh Goan Mussels with its creamy gravy with its coconut and garlic base. There is little satisfaction in life like dipping a piping hot bread into a sauce, and the flavours really complemented each other. Next up was something much more down my alley – Lamb Shank Biryani! The meat was tender and succulent, and coupled with the rice it was really aromatic. This was an impressive fusion between Indian and Arabic food. It wouldn’t be Lanterns without a curry of some sort, and the Tarri Wali Chicken Curry with Pilao Rice delivered with aplomb. The gravy was rich www.bahrainthismonth.com
with flavour and the spices really tasted authentic, indicative of the team’s dedication to not cut corners and source the finest ingredients. The chicken couldn’t have been cooked better either, just the right level of tenderness. After the curry, I was yearning for something more solid and the Angus Beef Bites delivered. As far as finger foods go, you can’t go wrong with seasoned cubes of steak! Finally, the Assorted Dumplings were served in a very cute wooden basket and were packed with such a plethora of fillings and flavours that I’d cover the word count listing them all. To my surprise, the prawn offering stood out to me as a particular highlight, and considering so many outlets get dumplings very wrong, it was a relief that Lanterns knew just how soft and moist they needed to be. Overall, considering Lanterns is one of my favourite restaurants, this excursion really highlighted how linear my vision usually is when it comes to the menu! It taught me a lesson that I really need to branch out more and explore the hidden delights offered by a creative culinary team, because the selection was truly fantastic. May 2022 37

MAGNIFICO PORTOFINO!
Kristian Harrison lets his hair down in a stunning convertible – the Ferrari Portofino M.
S
ometimes, it’s easy to take this job for granted. Taking new cars out for a spin on the roads becomes commonplace, and it’s easy to forget how lucky I am sometimes. Then a car like the Ferrari Portofino M comes along to remind you why I love it; it’s a real dream come true. This cool convertible just oozes luxury, style and power. I knew it was going to be a good day when I arrived at the Euro Motors Ferrari showroom in Sitra and saw the vibrant beauty parked outside. As much as I enjoyed taking the Roma out last month; I couldn’t help but think: Is it really a Ferrari if it isn’t bright red? Luckily, there were no such issues here. There she was, as red as roses. Slipping into the leather seats and firing up the engine with the button on the steering wheel, my first port of call was to find the button which controls the roof. In less than 15 seconds, the entirely automatic process was complete and I was basking in the glorious sun with the wind blowing through my hair. The roof would not come back up until I parked up again many hours later! On the design front, this latest stroke of genius from the Prancing Horse features a redesigned powertrain, a new eight-speed gearbox and the five-position Manettino dial that includes modes such as Wet, Comfort, Sport and Race so you can quickly adjust the car to your preferred www.bahrainthismonth.com
driving conditions. The Maranello masterpiece was simply a dream to drive. The steering, thankfully, was heavier than you’d expect from a car which is otherwise very compact and nimble. A beast like this should have some weight to it, and it makes driving in and out of traffic much more satisfying coupled with the roar from the 3,855cc engine. Speaking of which, the heart of the car belongs to the V8 turbo family voted International Engine of the Year on four consecutive occasions (2016-2019). The power unit can punch out 620cv at 7,500rpm, and the throttle response is instantaneous. The Portofino M’s harmonious styling exudes luxury from both the interior and exterior. The bodywork features a front, flanks and tail that are part of a single seamlessly sculptural design, while the cabin’s volumes and lines are stylistically consistent. All infotainment features are controlled via the touchscreen at the centre of the dash within easy reach of both driver and passenger. It includes a full HD multi-touch capacitive screen and is compatible with both: Apple Car Play and Android Auto. I was particularly impressed by the crystal-
clear sound system built into the car. Even with the roof down, a strong headwind and going at speeds close to (but not surpassing of course!) the kingdom’s speed limits, I could hear every guitar note and cymbal crash from my songs of choice. As for driver feedback, Ferrari’s HMI (HumanMachine Interface) centres on a digital cluster with dual TFT displays arranged around the analogue rev counter in a circular, anti-glare binnacle for optimal viewing without having to significantly alter your gaze. Ultimately, my experience was nothing but sublime. There’s no greater feeling in the world than taking a (red!) convertible sports car out on the open road with a powerful engine bellowing in your ears. The only downside is that it had to end and I had to face the sinking feeling of driving my comparatively terrible motor back home! THE ULTIMATE LEGACY CAR The late Virgil Abloh’s cooperation with Mercedes–Maybach culminates in the launch of a limited-edition bespoke S-Class and capsule collection, inspired by Project MAYBACH. On April 5, 2022, Mercedes–Maybach unveiled the final chapter of Project MAYBACH its cooperation with trusted partner, the late polymath artist, architect, creative director, fashion designer and philanthropist, Virgil Abloh. Designed in 2021 in partnership with Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Design Officer, Gorden Wagener, the vehicle was finalised before Abloh’s untimely passing in November and is available in a strictly limited run of 150 units. The launch coincides with the release of a capsule collection designed by Virgil Abloh and in collaboration with Off-White™. It has been developed in connection to the Project MAYBACH electric showcar. For over a century, Mercedes–Maybach has defined the boundaries of luxury experiences, and the limited-edition Maybach by Virgil Abloh, a fully equipped Mercedes-Maybach S-Class S680 (WLTP combined fuel consumption: 14.3-13.4 l/100 km | combined CO2 emissions: 326-304 g/km) continues this tradition. Created by Mercedes-Benz’ most specialised customisation and craftmanship team in the manufaktur in Sindelfingen – the vehicle exterior features the unique twotone colour combination created for Project MAYBACH. NISSAN ACCELERATING R&D Nissan has unveiled its prototype production facility for laminated all-solid-state battery cells, which the company aims to bring to market in 2028. This prototype facility, within the Nissan Research Center in Kanagawa Prefecture, is aimed at further promoting the development of allsolid-state-batteries. Under its long-term vision, Nissan Ambition 2030, Nissan aims to launch an EV with all-solid-state batteries developed in-house by fiscal 2028. It plans to establish a pilot production line at its Yokohama Plant in fiscal 2024, with materials, design and manufacturing processes for prototype production on the line to be studied at the prototype production facility. Nissan believes all-solidstate batteries can be reduced to USD75 per kWh in fiscal 2028 and to USD65 per kWh thereafter, placing EVs at the same cost level as gasoline-powered vehicles. All-solid-state batteries are expected to be a gamechanging technology for accelerating the popularity of electric vehicles. They have an energy density approximately twice that of conventional lithium-ion batteries, significantly shorter charging time due to superior charge/discharge performance, and lower cost thanks to the opportunity of using less expensive materials.

A BIT ABOUT VALUATIONS Business expert, Pria Masson Tanwar, gives us a cheat sheet on how to get investor-ready.
U
nicorns (companies with valuations over 1 billion) and well-funded companies have been all over the news recently. The question then is: how does a company achieve this sort of value? Understanding the fundamentals of what will really impact your business value goes a long way. It helps to make sound strategic decisions prior to approaching investors. This month, I provide you with a cheat-sheet on how to start getting investor-ready. Don’t sweat the small stuff. When dwelling on a small issue, ask this: is this going to materially impact the value of the company? This is especially true for newer set ups where all the smaller elements are not necessarily tied up – and waiting just adds to frustration and inertia. For valuation, the multiplier effects of the smaller things are usually minimal. Have a clear answer to “Why do you do what you do?” Understand the fundamentals of what really will impact your business value. This helps you to make sound strategic decisions prior to approaching investors. Unlocking intrinsic business value is a necessary step for investment. 46 May 2022
Real estate decisions are more complex than they appear. Most people wonder if the land on which their business is run should be owned by the entrepreneur, the business or a third party. The first question to ask is: Is the land going to be used as collateral to raise funds? If yes, then the land has to necessarily be on the books of the business. If not, then the land can be leased by the business from the owner of the land (even if it is the same as the promoter of the business). Use the ‘Others’ or ‘General’ categories prudently. ‘Others’ can be a very useful head for new setups where small details can be clubbed for a quick valuation assessment of undecided items. They are essential to the business no doubt and need to be sorted out before you start. However, this can be done while valuation negotiations are underway. Cash is King – always. The alluring net profit line and margins which drives a lot of entrepreneurs really means very little if the cash in the business (sitting on the balance sheet) is at an unhealthy level. The two go hand in hand but the cash figure is what you really need to look out for – because
that will give you your reserves to weather any storms. A valuation assessment is just a starting point. Finally, keep in mind that the on-paper valuation and the value you will agree to rarely coincide in any way. These valuation exercises are a starting point for discussions and the actual value most new businesses have is more intangible in nature. A Discounted Cash Flow Method (DCF) does take into account a lot of things but it is a very optimistic view on the business. On the other hand an asset valuation will lead to an as-is, value-free assessment. Investors into new businesses usually invest in the entrepreneur more than in the business. The reality is that a solid product backed by management confidence, trust, honesty and past record for performance in other businesses is what actually clinches most deals – not the excel sheet numbers. THE TRUE LEADER OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
business
Digital Marketing Expert, Sravan Kumar V, tells us why a Digital Transformation is more important today than ever before.
O
ver the past two years, we all might have come across this meme at least once. It summed up the digital transformation that occurred across all industries and sectors alike pretty well. A report by Siemens on the state of digitalisation in GCC business states that while business leaders are excited by digital transformation, they lag behind when it comes to implementation. With things slowly going back to normal, let’s look at the reasons why a digital transformation is more important now than ever before to stay competitive. Defining Digital Transformation Before the pre-pandemic era, experts from the technology industry observed that many companies lack an accurate understanding of digital. However, the past two years have changed many notions in harnessing digitalisation, but still, many companies believe that the transformation is limited to the implementation of technology and improving the quality of customer service. Though the ‘harnessing the power of technology’ part is true, digitalisation is not limited to solving problems and providing a quality customer experience, rather it is a process of integrating digital technology into different areas of a business which fundamentally changes how a business operates and delivers value to customers and employees alike.
www.bahrainthismonth.com
WHY YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON A DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION Change in Consumer Behaviour The pandemic and the lockdown had a profound impact on how people lived, particularly impacting consumer buying behaviour with many switching to online purchases. Research by Go Group Digital analysed that around 24 percent of consumers will increase their long-term use of Digital channels. Meanwhile, a report by Mckinsey states “the new consumer behaviours span all areas of life, from how we work to how we shop to how we entertain ourselves.” These behavioural changes will reshape consumer decision journeys and companies will need to adapt fast to stay competitive. Enhanced Customer Experience As per the ‘Winners and losers in the digital economy’ Havard Business Review survey, 40 percent of respondents said that customer experience is the top priority for digital transformation. With customers gaining control over the way companies deliver experiences and since every customer experience impacts the overall perception of a brand, digital transformation that focuses on customer relationships and experiences is the key to a successful organisation. Data-Driven Insights
become the basis of all future service offerings and business models. Digital transformation will enable the use of both structured and unstructured data to generate highly personalised and relevant insights. Most companies have experienced the advantages of data-driven decision-making already when it comes to marketing. The realworld data generated by digital ad campaigns enabled companies to optimise campaigns and achieve the set objectives and results. Improve Employee Experience In today’s world, an employee experience is as important as customer experience and the digital transformation can be spearheaded by an employee-first approach. According to research from MIT’s Center for Information Systems Research, it has found that a good employee experience can achieve twice the customer satisfaction and innovation and generate 25 percent higher profits. Overall, it’s time for companies to articulate a corporate strategy for the digital age - evaluate its positive affects and on how they want to implement and closely integrate digital ambitions with their overall business goals. -------------------------------------------------------Sravan Kumar.V is a Digital Marketing expert and a passionate marketer. Delivering Results
Chairman of the Bahrain Association of Banks, Adnan Yousif, emphasised the association’s desire to expand cooperation with financial institutions and investment companies in the Republic of Turkey in various fields of banking, finance, and investment as part of the association’s efforts to promote the financial and banking sector in Bahrain, attract more investment, and support the national economy. A Turkish delegation had visited the Kingdom to attend the seventh meeting of the Joint Economic Committee between the two countries during which Mr. Yousif met with the delegation. “Bahrain provides an attractive investment environment, advanced Islamic banking and has the availability of expert and trained local professionals that form over 90 percent of the financial and banking institutions workforce,” says Mr. Yousif. “The banking sector of both Bahrain and Turkey is similar in many aspects, including the freedom to do business, company ownership, and movement of funds to and from the state, in addition to not charging fees on capital flows for local or international investors,” explains Mr. Yousif. The meeting comes in line with the efforts of the Bahrain Association of Banks and the Banks Association of Turkey to implement the memorandum of understanding signed between them in 2017, and its provisions. www.bahrainthismonth.com

Meshuggah
Immutable It’s typical for Sweden’s Meshuggah to take several years between album releases. That said, Immutable has been an unusually long time coming; six years, in fact. The COVID-19 pandemic started just before they began work on it, adding years to the process. Though their trademark sound remains instantly identifiable, Meshuggah creates deliberate tension between that trademark sound and an insatiable need to evolve musically. That intent is pervasive on Immutable. It marks the contrast in production, composition, and guitar tones over a whopping 67 minutes, making it their longest, but also most interesting, album to date.
Machine Gun Kelly
RED HOT CHILI PEPPER Unlimited Love Verdict:
The Chilis return with their finest effort in years.
What’s the story? Unlimited Love is the 12th studio album by the American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Produced by Rick Rubin, the album reunites the band with iconic guitarist John Frusciante, who left in 2009 and rejoined in 2019, replacing Josh Klinghoffer. Frusciante said: “Flea had put the idea of rejoining in my head and I was sitting there with the guitar thinking that I hadn’t written any rock music in so long. Could I still do that?”
Worth a listen? On this album, it feels like the Chilis just received a big injection of creativity. It’s like a fresh start, but the band is so tight that it seems like John Frusciante never left. They were certainly not afraid to experiment and explore many different flavours and moods, sometimes on the same song. At the same time, they also deliver many songs that feels like classic Chili Peppers with new clothes. Despite the differences in style and mood, one song leads to the next coherently. Anthony Kiedis is sounding somewhat his best on this record and is bringing a lot to the table with many memorable hooks, melodies and even some experimentation. All in all, Unlimited Love sits comfortably next to the band’s most legendary albums, which is quite the accomplishment after almost 40 years on the road.
54 May 2022
Mainstream Sellout Machine Gun Kelly’s transition from rapper with pop sensibilities to pop-punk revivalist continues enthusiastically with sixth album Mainstream Sellout. Made once again with blink-182’s Travis Barker acting as producer and drummer, Mainstream Sellout goes even further than the last album in reshaping Kelly’s sound as a 2020s approximation of the kind of melodic but anguished punk Barker and his peers were making in the start of the Naughties. This is most apparent in songs made up of big, distorted guitars, simplistic but catchy hooks, and Barker’s tight, snappy drumming. Mainstream Sellout feels mostly like a middling attempt to further cross over into poppunk, this time lighter on ideas and cohesion.
Weezer
SZNZ: Spring Concept albums are not a foreign concept to Weezer – the band released two of them in 2021, but their SZNZ project of 2022 is certainly ambitious. Over the course of the year, they plan to release a new EP at the dawn of each season, with each record intending to convey the spirit of the season. SZNZ: Spring is indeed a cheerful, optimistic listen, filled with sunny melodies and bright, hopeful imagery, some plucked straight from Shakespeare. Weezer layer SZNZ: Spring with instruments that also suggest a flowering rebirth: plenty of acoustic guitars, a stray recorder and mandolin, lots of cheerful vocal harmonies. www.bahrainthismonth.com
apps
APPS REVIEW STAY ACCOUNTABLE, IMPROVE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY, MAINTAIN YOUR PRIVACY AND MORE WITH KRISTIAN HARRISON’S APP RECOMMENDATIONS.
Acture Acture is a digital wellbeing app for reducing screen time. You simply turn on the app when you want to focus on things other than your phone. Every time you pick up your phone during that period, the phone asks you why you want to use it and you have to tell it. Later, you can review your responses to see why you keep using the device. It’s a bit of a self-accountability method as you can criticise your decisions later on.
Wavelet Wavelet is an equaliser app unlike any other. It does a lot of the basic stuff and includes various presets, a nine band equaliser, a bass booster, a reverb preset and even a virtualiser. The app’s claim to fame is its 2,400 precalculated presets on a headphone-by-headphone basis. You can tell the app to adjust the sound based on a specific model of headphones and it tries to get everything on target as much as possible.
Adobe Photoshop Camera Adobe Photoshop Camera is Adobe’s newest app, made to be used in conjunction with Instagram. It’s a camera app with a bunch of filters like most camera apps these days. Photoshop Camera does let you see real-time effects before you shoot the picture and it can do some extra stuff like auto-tone, a bokeh-style portrait mode, and more.
Lockscreen Widgets Lockscreen Widgets brings back an old feature. It’s a lock screen replacement app that lets you put widgets on your lock screen, with one widget per page. You can then re-order pages as you see fit and tap the widget with three fingers to hide it. It’s a nostalgic throwback in an age where many skip the lock screen with biometrics.

WHY YOU SHOULD COVER YOUR CHILD IN DIRT THIS SUMMER!
D
68
Ouiam El Hassani tells us the importance of microbes and how to find the right balance for your child.
id you know that the human body has approximately the same number of bacterial cells as human cells? This is always a nice reminder when your child's behaviour makes you question if an alien has invaded their body. These nonhuman organisms living in, and on you, are microbes—38,000,000,000,000 of them are bacteria. What they do, how they got there, why we need them and how we can help them thrive is changing how we think and even how we parent. While a small number of microbes can be pathogenic and harmful, the majority of microbes, especially bacteria, are actually beneficial and critical to our health. The question now is: How do we nurture these ‘good invisible friends’ in your child’s body so they can fight the nasty ones?
of carbohydrates (like broccoli, brussels sprouts, beans and sweet potatoes) · A high intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fat (like salmon, sardines, avocados and olive oil) · Food that is low in sugar and preservative agents, that isn’t processed or loaded with additives · Food that is low in saturated fat An overload of sugar and processed food can hurt the balance of the gut microbiome, which makes it hard to digest food and for a child’s immune system to function. Minimising processed foods and offering your child a diet that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables can support a healthy and diverse microbiome. · Beyond diet, everything from stress levels, to exercise and sleep can impact the health of your kid’s microbiome.
One of the most impactful ways you can nurture the trillions of microbes that work hard to keep your child healthy is through nutrition. It is recommended to have: · A high intake of plant fibres through vegetables, walnuts, pomegranates and berries and other high-fibre food. · A high intake of fibre and specific kinds
How to help your child’s microbiome thrive? · Go outside and play: When your child is outside, they are exposed to many different microbes. A handful of dirt can contain billions of microbes—so encourage your kids to get a little dirty! · Brush their teeth: The mouth is the second
May 2022
most diverse part of the body (after the gut), with bacteria living in different areas, like the tongue, cheek, throat and even saliva. These bacteria work to prevent smelly breath, cavities and to make sure nothing harmful finds a place to live. Regular brushing helps keep the mouth microbiome in balance—and a healthy mouth microbiome can even protect other parts of the body like the heart and lungs! · Get quality sleep: Your microbes are happiest when you have a regular sleep schedule. · Enjoy time with pets (if they’re not allergic!): Pets have their own unique microbes, just like us! Pets carry lots of microbes that are different from ours and can help teach your child’s body what’s OK and what might make them sick. · Incorporate a probiotic: While fermented foods and beverages are great additions to diet for other reasons, most do not qualify as a probiotic. Probiotics are beneficial microbes that have been shown to provide specific health benefits. Hopefully we can now approach the invisible world of microbes with an appreciation and understanding of how they can support and sustain our health. Be safe and enjoy the dirt!
