Ina harmonious fusion of tradition and triumph, the deep-seated bond between the royal families of Bahrain and the United Kingdom came to the fore yet again this month during the Royal Windsor Horse Show. The relationship between the two Kingdoms was emphasised by HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, attending the historic festival on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and meeting with His Majesty King Charles III.
The two warmly shared talks in the Kingdom of Bahrain pavilion during the show’s Endurance
Race held at Windsor Great Park. HRH Prince Salman highlighted the longstanding BahrainUK relationship, stretching back 200 years, which is based on multi-sectoral collaboration and strategic partnership.
HRH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, leading Bahrain’s Royal Endurance Team, was also in attendance and orchestrated a remarkable display of equestrian prowess by leading the Victorious and Al Ru’ood teams to glory in three different categories.
Victorious team claimed first place in the 160km race, led by rider Othman Abduljaleel Al Awadhi. The Al Ru’ood team secured
victory in the 120km race, with rider Ahmed Khaled Ahmed Althawadi leading the charge. Finally, rider Cecilia Garcia from the Victorious team claimed first place in the 100km race.
The Royal Windsor Horse Show has been held annually since 1943 and is the only one in the United Kingdom to host international competition for dressage, show jumping, carriage driving and endurance riding in addition to more than 130 showing classes. It annually attracts more than 50,000 visitors.

AN ICON OF PROGRESS
Holding roles such as Minister of Housing, Undersecretary Minister of Finance and Deputy Governor of the Bahrain Monetary Agency, which is now known as the Central Bank of Bahrain, Shaikh Ebrahim has been deeply involved in entrepreneurial ventures and developmental activities throughout his career.
His main successes have been in the banking sector, chairing numerous financial institutions including Meezan Bank in Pakistan, where he served as a founding chairman. The bank stands as a leading institution, boasting over a thousand branches and currently holding the title of the most profitable institution in the country.
Furthermore, he also chaired the Bahrain Development Bank, overseeing its transformation into a crucial player in fostering entrepreneurship. Through initiatives like building incubators dedicated to young entrepreneurs, it pioneered the Bahrain model, facilitating economic growth and innovation. Another significant endeavour was founding Ebdaa Bank, which nurtures young entrepreneurs and promotes financial inclusion.
“Bahrain’s journey to becoming a major financial hub, particularly in Islamic finance, is something I am hugely honoured to be part of,” Shaikh Ebrahim states. “Bahrain’s success can be attributed to several factors, starting with its globally-recognised robust regulatory framework, its clear and adaptable legal infrastructure, and its consistent aligning with international standards. Equally vital is the emphasis on developing a skilled workforce through
training and knowledge exchange, ensuring Bahrain remains competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.
“Moreover, Bahrain’s proactive approach to technology adoption, especially in fields like blockchain, is world class, as is its standardising of best practices in Islamic finance.”
Moving forward, Shaikh Ebrahim argues that achieving sustainable development goals necessitates economic empowerment and smart financial inclusion, a multifaceted challenge that demands collaborative efforts from all sectors of society. With regards to Islamic finance, aligning with the Maqasid al-Sharia, or objectives of Islamic law, is paramount. He argues that Islamic banks must redirect investments towards sectors with real economic impact, such as manufacturing and small-medium enterprises, fostering job creation and economic growth.
“Additionally, leveraging technology to enhance financial accessibility is crucial,” he believes. “Embracing FinTech solutions like mobile banking and blockchain can broaden financial inclusion, particularly for underserved populations.
“Moreover, issuing Sukuk (Sharia-compliant bonds) for infrastructure development, coupled with prudent debt management, can stimulate sustainable economic growth. It’s essential to prioritise inclusive economic policies that empower all segments of society, ensuring that no one is left behind.”
As Bahrain prepares for the upcoming World Entrepreneurs’ Investment Forum
There are few more qualified businessmen in Bahrain than Shaikh Ebrahim bin Khalifa
Al Khalifa, who boasts three decades of diverse experience across various organisations and ministries. Bahrain This Month sat down with him to discuss various aspects of the Kingdom’s economy and financial future.
this month, the Kingdom’s role in fostering global collaboration and innovation will be highlighted. It will be held under the patronage of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, something which Shaikh Ebrahim believes underlines the conference’s importance to Bahrain’s financial future. He states: “The WEIF is now is the flagship platform to attract government officials, entrepreneurs, investors and policy makers from all over the world. Representatives from as many as 100 countries are expected, including from the Arab League. “The forum’s success is attributed to visionary initiatives like the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation’s partnership and its global recognition as a premier platform for entrepreneurship and investment. By facilitating dialogue, partnerships, and impactful investments, the forum plays a pivotal role in addressing global challenges and unlocking new opportunities.
“Furthermore, hosting the forum alongside the Arab Leaders’ Summit underscores the synergies between economic development and regional cooperation. The insights and recommendations from the forum will inform policy discussions at the summit, emphasising the importance of economic empowerment and inclusion in achieving sustainable development goals.”

A VISIONARY LEADER
Few entrepreneurs have made more use of Bahrain’s business-friendly nature than Khalid AlQoud, a visionary leader whose journey from modest beginnings to the helm of AlQoud Foundation is a testament to resilience, innovation and unwavering commitment to community betterment. Kristian Harrison sat down with him to delve into the evolution of his entrepreneurial endeavours, the profound impact of AlQoud Foundation on Bahrain’s commercial landscape and the enduring importance of corporate social responsibility.
Mr AlQoud’s odyssey commenced in 1998, with the humble beginnings of a small retail boutique. With an innate entrepreneurial spirit, Khalid quickly navigated into real estate while balancing his studies, before shifting to event management and a role within the aluminium industry. In 2007, he transitioned to work for a family business office located in Bahrain, which boasted more than 100 years of experience and service.
“During my time there, I gained valuable insights into operating a successful business, which eventually led me to quit my job and start my own consultancy firm in 2012,” he explains. “The consultancy firm began to thrive, prompting us to expand our activities and eventually change the name from AlQoud Consultancy to AlQoud Enterprise. This marked another milestone in our journey, leading us to establish a second organisation: International Leadership and Coaching, in neighbouring countries including UAE and Kuwait.
“During the challenging pandemic, our team came together to brainstorm ways to overcome the obstacles. This led to the creation of a foundation, which consolidated all our companies under
interview Bahrainthismonth.com 18 May 2024
one umbrella. The foundation operates as a socially responsible group of companies, dedicated to giving back to the community by allocating a percentage of its annual profit to sustainable projects and supporting corporate social responsibility organisations in Bahrain and beyond.
“This transition from a consultancy firm to a foundation with dedicated sections for CSR, philanthropy and sustainable support for the environment, economy and social well-being reflects our commitment to making a positive impact on society and culture.”
Reflecting on his own experience, Mr. AlQoud highlighted Bahrain’s significant influence in propelling local businesses onto the global stage. The Kingdom’s robust education system, strategic partnerships and institutional support mechanisms propels entrepreneurs towards international success, he believes. “Organisations like Tamkeen, the Economic Development Board, and the Bahrain Development Bank play crucial roles in empowering startups to expand globally,” he adds.
That is not to say that budding entrepreneurs don’t face a multitude of challenges alongside abundant opportunities. Mr. AlQoud acknowledges the complexities of cultural diversity, regulatory frameworks, smaller market size and talent acquisition that characterise Bahrain’s landscape. However, he views these obstacles as catalysts for growth. “While this may pose difficulties in terms of scalability, it also fosters a close-knit business community where networking and word-of-mouth referrals can be powerful,” he explains. “Furthermore, finding skilled talent can be a challenge in Bahrain, particularly in niche industries. However, this shortage presents an opportunity for businesses to invest in training and development programmes to upskill local talent. The convergence of global expertise and local ingenuity fuels a wave of transformative innovation.”
Amidst the unprecedented challenges posed by the global pandemic, Mr. AlQoud spearheaded a transformative initiative, giving rise to the AlQoud Foundation as a platform for unified action and social impact.
“The foundation embodies our commitment to creating positive change in society,” he posits. “By consolidating
diverse entities under a unified umbrella, the foundation fosters a collaborative ecosystem dedicated to community upliftment and sustainable development. From corporate philanthropy to environmental conservation efforts, the AlQoud Foundation is a trailblazer in driving transformative change and fostering a ripple effect of positive influence.”
Mr. AlQoud champions the importance of corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a cornerstone of ethical business practices. “CSR goes beyond mere philanthropy – it embodies a philosophy of shared prosperity and collective wellbeing,” he asserts.
“Successful organisations often reflect their internal success through their philanthropic endeavours. Therefore, cultivating a positive organisational culture that prioritises the well-being and rights of employees is crucial. This involves implementing policies and practices that create healthy and supportive work environments. Additionally, crafting an effective branding message associated with CSR and philanthropy can underscore the enterprise’s commitment to people and the community at large.”
In his view, CSR encompasses a holistic approach, encompassing environmental stewardship, economic empowerment and social cohesion. “Our initiatives span diverse sectors, including healthcare, education and environmental conservation,” Khalid elaborates.
“It’s best to explain this by giving a specific example. Imagine you’re an active participant in your community, consistently offering support and assistance to its members. In doing so, you build a sense of loyalty towards you, your brand and your products. People naturally gravitate towards those who have consistently shown care and support.
“Additionally, engaging in sustainable projects can significantly contribute to your organisation’s branding efforts in a unique and cost-effective manner. For instance, consider a scenario where a neighbourhood or village lacks essential facilities such as a hospital or school. Now, envision a corporate entity, let’s call it ABC, stepping in to construct such a facility with their name proudly displayed. Every individual who benefits from these facilities will associate them with the corporate entity responsible
for their existence. This builds a strong sense of gratitude and loyalty towards the company, potentially leading to increased product usage and service adoption.
“Moreover, actively participating in CSR initiatives not only enhances your reputation within the community but also strengthens your position when tendering for projects that require corporate contributions. These benefits, among others, underscore the importance of CSR in shaping a positive image.”
Recently, the AlQoud Foundation successfully collaborated with a neighbouring country and a small diabetic clinic. Despite its size, the clinic offered unique solutions, aiding patients with dire prognoses turned away by other hospitals. The Foundation’s aim was to expand this vital service’s reach, providing strategic direction to scale up operations, source resources and enhance capabilities. This resulted in a network of branches, serving a larger community.
Additionally, it addressed rising unemployment in Bahrain by establishing five free training centres across the kingdom. These centres, managed by non-profit organisations, provide vocational training to empower the unemployed with valuable skills. The company also launched bahrainInternship.com, an online platform facilitating internships and professional development, aiding individuals in enhancing their CVs and career prospects.

STRENGTHENING HISTORIC BONDS
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, His Excellency Alastair Long, the esteemed Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Bahrain, shares insights into his first nine months in the role and outlines plans to further strengthen the enduring bond between the two nations. Kristian Harrison had the privilege of engaging in a candid conversation with him, delving into various aspects of trade dynamics, collaborative projects and personal reflections on his diplomatic journey.
UK in Bahrain
24 May 2024 Bahrainthismonth.com
How has your first nine months been as the British Ambassador to Bahrain?
It has genuinely been both a privilege and a pleasure. Bahrain and the UK share a close relationship, which I’ve had the honour to witness first-hand. The warmth of the welcome I’ve received here has been truly remarkable and I’ve been deeply encouraged by the enthusiasm for collaboration between our two nations across various sectors.
How do you plan to strengthen the relationship further?
The true challenge, when you inherit such a strong working relationship, is what more can you build on such a rock-solid foundation? My focus is on ensuring that this relationship remains robust and relevant for the future while nurturing the bond our two kingdoms share. This involves not only maintaining existing ties but also exploring new avenues for cooperation. In particular, I see great potential in fostering partnerships in future industries such as digital technology and sustainability. Additionally, investing in people-to-people ties and cultural exchanges will help deepen mutual understanding and appreciation between our nations.
What is the latest update on trade between the two countries, particularly in regard to various Free Trade Agreements?
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, there has been a notable uptick in investment flows in both directions. Bahraini investment into the UK has seen considerable growth, which not only benefits the UK economy but also enhances Bahrain’s international profile and economic diversification efforts. Similarly, UK companies have shown a keen interest in Bahrain’s business-friendly environment, leading to increased investment in the kingdom. On the FTAs, we’re nearly there, I promise you! These things necessarily take time because they’re big and they’ll endure for decades. Rather than rush, we’d rather get it right now and create something that really speaks to the global community about the free trade plans that we have together.
What are the key collaborative projects, especially in education and culture?
Education and culture are vital pillars of the Bahrain-UK relationship, and there are several key collaborative projects underway in these areas. One notable initiative is the expansion of British degree courses in Bahrain, providing students with access to high-quality education. Additionally, there are ongoing efforts to promote student exchanges and cultural programmes, fostering greater cross-cultural understanding and collaboration. The British Council plays a significant role in facilitating English language provision and cultural exchange activities, further strengthening ties between our nations.
How do you facilitate cultural exchanges?
The British Embassy in Bahrain works closely with local partners to promote cultural exchange programmes. These activities provide opportunities for Bahrainis and Britons to engage with each other’s cultures, fostering mutual appreciation and understanding. Furthermore, our new visa arrangements I think are really attractive. We still have the greatest number of Bahrainis coming to the UK than any other international market and they’re most welcome. There is no substitute for spending time in each other’s countries for understanding one another.
You’re a great spokesman for conservation and the environment. What efforts are being made by British entities to combat climate change in Bahrain?
Britain is actively engaged in efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental sustainability in Bahrain. We’ve had our Centre for Aquaculture and Environmental Science working here for a number of years now, and such collaborative projects focus on various aspects of environmental conservation and climate resilience. For example, initiatives to protect marine ecosystems, such as mangroves and seagrass beds, are crucial for preserving biodiversity and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Additionally, efforts to enhance water resource management and promote renewable energy technologies contribute to Bahrain’s long-term sustainability goals.
Have you faced any particularly challenging situations as a diplomat?
Diplomacy often involves navigating complex and sensitive issues, which can present significant challenges. While the visible aspects of diplomacy may appear cordial and diplomatic, behind the scenes, diplomats often engage in difficult conversations and negotiations with counterparts who may hold divergent views. Finding common ground and working towards mutually beneficial solutions requires patience, tact and perseverance.
If you hadn’t have become a diplomat, what would you have been?
Funnily enough, diplomacy was not always my career goal! Prior to entering the diplomatic service, I pursued a career as a musician, studying trumpet performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and playing professionally for several years. There are loads of skills you learn, even from being a professional musician, which might seem a distance away from international relations, but you learn skills of presentation, teamwork and self-drive, because as a musician, you’re self-employed and money can be hard to come by. I still hugely enjoy music and value that experience.
How have you changed professionally and personally during your time in Bahrain so far?
Now you’ve settled in here and had more time to explore the island’s delights, do you have a favourite Bahraini dish?
During the Holy Month of Ramadan, I was lucky enough to visit various majalis in the evenings. One of the things I just can’t say no to are these wonderful doughnut-ty balls, Luqaimat, which for me are absolutely incredible. I think they’re going to be my destruction, honestly. If I look twice the size in a couple of years’ time, it will be because of those. But I think Bahraini food is wonderful, with tradition and innovation in equal measure.
What advice would you give to your younger self?
What I would say, to both myself and other young diplomats, is that diplomacy is a profession. But it’s a profession that requires real broad experience because you need to understand almost every aspect of the international system. At the point at which you become an ambassador, you need to be able to draw on understanding of the UN, understanding of developed and developing contexts, understanding of international finance, trade, consular issues, the defence world, the cultural world and more. Therefore, breadth and varied experiences are really important. Language skills also help immensely.
Professionally, I’ve gained valuable insights into the complexities of diplomatic engagement and the importance of building strong relationships with host countries and international partners. I’ve also learned that I can achieve nothing without my truly fabulous Embassy team who understand Bahrain exceptionally well. Personally, I’ve learned to adapt to a new cultural environment and embrace the unique opportunities and challenges that come with living abroad. Balancing the demands of diplomacy with family life has been a rewarding but sometimes challenging experience, requiring careful prioritisation and time management.
Finally, any message for the British community in Bahrain?
However much the world is changing, I think we can just be so proud of the breadth of what the UK does and offers. I’m reminded every day here by how much the UK is doing, whether it’s in archaeology, music, science or defence and security. We are one of very few nations that really has a whole suite offer. As we navigate the opportunities and challenges of the future together, I encourage you to continue to be ambassadors for the UK and active participants in the vibrant community here in Bahrain.

DEVELOPING A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMY
After calling time on a distinguished diplomatic career spanning more than four decades, His Excellency Iain Lindsay’s journey has been characterised by a steadfast commitment to fostering international relations and driving positive change. After serving in various capacities across the globe, he has found himself drawn back to Bahrain as an advisor to the Chairman of the Economic Development Board (EDB).
In this exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, Mr. Lindsay provides fresh insights into his career and his motivations for returning to Bahrain, delves into the Kingdom’s key economic development initiatives and offers valuable perspectives on the opportunities and challenges shaping our island’s future.
Can you give us a brief overview of your career and how you ended up back in Bahrain?
I began my diplomatic career in 1980, serving in different capacities in embassies around the world. Notably, I held the position of Deputy Consul-General in Hong Kong before being appointed as the British Ambassador to Bahrain in 2011. My tenure in Bahrain, lasting until 2015, was a period of significant diplomatic engagement, focusing on strengthening the longstanding ties between the UK and Bahrain. Post my time in Bahrain, I served as the British Ambassador to Hungary for four and a half years, departing in 2020.
Following a brief period in the UK, I returned to Bahrain in 2021 to take up my current role as an advisor to the Chairman of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB). The opportunity to contribute to Bahrain’s economic growth and development was a compelling reason for my return, given my deep-rooted fondness for the country and its people.

UK in Bahrain
What motivated you to transition from a highly successful diplomatic career towards your current advisory role in Bahrain?
After more than 40 years, I felt a sense of fulfilment in my diplomatic career but also a desire to explore new avenues where I could continue to make a meaningful impact. The prospect of leveraging my experience and expertise to facilitate investment and economic development in Bahrain was immensely appealing to me.
Having previously served in Bahrain and witnessing its resilience and potential, I was drawn to the opportunity to contribute to its continued growth story. Moreover, the chance to work closely with the leadership of Bahrain presented an exciting challenge that I was eager to undertake. Thus, when the opportunity arose to join the Bahrain Economic Development Board as an advisor, I embraced it wholeheartedly, recognising it as a platform to drive positive change and progress in the country’s economic landscape.
What key economic development initiatives have you been involved in since joining the EDB?
My role has been multifaceted, involving various initiatives aimed at attracting investment and fostering economic growth. One of the notable endeavours has been leading missions to key markets such as Japan and Germany to promote Bahrain as an investment destination. These missions involved engaging with potential investors, government officials and business leaders to showcase the opportunities and advantages of investing in Bahrain.
Additionally, I have been involved in facilitating strategic partnerships and collaborations with international companies, particularly in sectors like technology and finance. One significant success was the establishment of a tech hub by Citibank in Bahrain, a testament to the country’s growing prominence as a regional hub for innovation and technology. Furthermore, I have been actively involved in promoting Bahrain’s priority sectors, including financial services, manufacturing, logistics, ICT and tourism. These initiatives align closely with Bahrain’s economic diversification strategy and aim to attract investment across a range of sectors to drive sustainable growth and development.
How does Bahrain differentiate itself from other GCC states as a business destination?
Bahrain possesses several unique attributes that set it apart as a favourable business destination within the GCC. Firstly, Bahrain boasts a highly skilled and diverse workforce, comprising both local talent and expatriates, which is a critical factor for
businesses seeking to establish a presence in the region. The country’s strong emphasis on education and training programmes ensures a continuous supply of skilled professionals across various industries, making Bahrain an attractive destination for companies looking to recruit top talent. Additionally, Bahrain offers a conducive business environment characterised by its open economy, liberal regulatory framework and ease of doing business.
Bahrain has led the way in the region in economic diversification and has made significant strides in sectors such as financial services, manufacturing and technology. Furthermore, Bahrain’s strategic location at the heart of the Gulf region, coupled with its well-developed infrastructure and connectivity, makes it an ideal gateway for companies looking to access markets across the Middle East and beyond. Lastly, Bahrain prides itself on its strong culture of partnership and collaboration, both within the business community and between the public and private sectors. This collaborative approach fosters innovation, entrepreneurship and mutual prosperity, making Bahrain a preferred destination for investors seeking long-term growth opportunities in the region.
Which sectors of Bahrain’s economy hold the most potential for growth and investment, and why?
Bahrain’s economy is driven by various factors such as market demand, technological advancements and government priorities. One sector with immense growth potential is technology, including ICT and FinTech. Bahrain has been actively promoting itself as a regional hub for technology and innovation, leveraging its skilled workforce, supportive regulatory environment and strategic location to attract tech companies and startups. The emergence of initiatives like the Amazon Web Services (AWS) hyper data centre and the establishment of tech hubs by multinational corporations like Citibank underscore Bahrain’s growing prominence in the tech sector.
Another sector poised for growth is financial services, given Bahrain’s longstanding reputation as a leading financial centre in the region. The country’s well-established regulatory framework, competitive business environment and robust infrastructure make it an attractive destination for financial institutions, asset managers, and FinTech companies seeking to tap into the burgeoning Gulf market.
Additionally, sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and tourism offer significant opportunities for investment and expansion, supported by Bahrain’s strategic focus on economic diversification and sustainable development.
How do you envision Bahrain’s economic landscape evolving over the next decade, and what are the key strategies in place to achieve this vision?
Looking ahead, Bahrain’s economic landscape is poised for continued growth and transformation, driven by strategic initiatives aimed at fostering innovation, diversification and sustainable development. Over the next decade, Bahrain aims to further strengthen its position as a regional hub for business, finance and technology while promoting inclusive growth and prosperity for its citizens. Key strategies to achieve this vision include:
• Economic Diversification: Diversifying the economy away from traditional sectors like oil and gas towards knowledgebased industries such as technology, finance, healthcare and renewable energy, ultimately reducing reliance on hydrocarbon revenues.
• Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship by investing in education, research and technology infrastructure.
• Infrastructure Development: This will enhance connectivity, facilitate trade and investment, and improve the quality of life for its residents. Projects such as the Bahrain International Airport expansion, the Bahrain Logistics Zone and the Bahrain Metro Rail project aim to enhance Bahrain’s competitiveness as a regional business hub.
• Human Capital Development: Investing in human capital to drive economic growth and development by upskilling and reskilling the workforce while enhancing the employability of Bahraini nationals. Tamkeen, with whom the EDB has a very close relationship, does a great job in supporting the development of Bahrain’s human capital.
• Sustainable Development: Pursuing sustainable development practices to mitigate environmental risks, conserve natural resources and promote social equity.
Outside of work, how do you relax and spend your time?
I love spending time with our Hungarian dog Juno, leisurely family walks (when the weather is cooler), reading and practising my Hungarian as I love languages and linguistics. Eating out and watching thrillers are also up there. I’m a keen but not very good golfer, so I enjoy a monthly Scotland vs. England Calcutta Cup match! Unsurprisingly, as former diplomats, my wife and I love travelling. We’re looking forward to returning to Italy and Hungary this summer.

A HISTORIC MOVE
After years of providing essential services and networking opportunities for the Kingdom’s local business community, the Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) has transitioned into the British Chamber of Commerce Bahrain (BCOCB). Kristian Harrison spoke with the BCOCB’s Chairman, Khalid Rashid Al Zayani, and Vice Chair, Paula Boast MBE, about this ground-breaking move and what it means for the future.
Can you give us an overview of the BCOCB and its founding?
process of achieving official Chamber status?
When we started it in 1995, the BBBF was more of a social club with just 16 members than a business entity. Over time, I saw the potential to elevate it into a proper chamber, drawing from my experience with establishing the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham) and the Bahrain US Business Council. His Majesty’s King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa gave me a directive to establish the Bahrain British Business Council and this further fuelled this ambition to achieve our ultimate goal to become a full-fledged Chamber, aligning with international standards.
Can you walk us through the
Negotiations with the UK Chamber were smooth, leading to our establishment under the Ministry of Commerce. While there were administrative changes, the transition was seamless. We’ve adapted our headquarters to suit our evolving needs and expanded our membership offerings with a focus on delivering enhanced services to our members.
What’s the BCOCB’s relationship with the UK, especially now as a Chamber of Commerce?
With Saudi Arabia as a neighbouring market powerhouse, our strategic location positions us as a gateway for UK businesses eyeing the Gulf region. This proximity, coupled with
our strong ties to both Bahrain and the UK, enables us to facilitate bilateral exchanges and serve as a launchpad for exploring new opportunities.
What’s the secret to your success?
Being a businessman doesn’t restrict you to creating ventures or wealth only for yourself. You have responsibility towards your community and the people of Bahrain. So, if there are any opportunities for us as a group to create something of value to the community and the people of Bahrain, we do not hesitate in doing so. I can name many of the committees, clubs, and associations that were created by devoting time to them, like Bahrain Health and Safety Society, and Bahrain Historical and Archaeological Society, among others. The beauty of this

is that you create something worthwhile and then you hand it to the next generation or to the next leadership.
I put very strict governance within our group. When a person reaches the age of 65, he or she has to step down from the board and hand it to the next generation. We’ve had very successful successions within our group already because of this policy.
Your family has been involved in business with the UK since the
Can you explain the rationale behind the decision for the BBBF to transition to the BCOCB?
During the pandemic, we set up region-wide online events between ourselves and other business groups in the region to be able to ensure we had member activity. We also set up a number of higher-level management and committee meetings. The feeling generally was that there is a definitive shift in the future direction of the business groups and that we needed to adapt particularly with a view to creating more regional and global business opportunities for our members. So, we starting speaking to the Global Network Team at The British Chambers of Commerce led by the fantastic Anne-Marie Martin and her team. Abu Dhabi were the first to make a transition in the region and Bahrain decided to follow suit.
How does this transition align with the evolving needs of the business community in Bahrain and the broader region?
There are probably two separate models. Businesses are very much looking outward post-pandemic. They don’t just want to come and set up in Bahrain anymore and be done with it. They want to use Bahrain as a hub or a platform to other regional opportunities and also as a link to global markets, particularly Africa and Asia. Then we have the businesses on the ground that are content to stay local, however they still want to do more business with other regional and global entities. Being a Chamber allows us to better facilitate that combination of local – regional –global business reach.
What benefits or opportunities does becoming a chamber of commerce offer to existing and new members, and businesses operating in Bahrain?
Well first off, the Chamber is still run by local business volunteers, the very people who have lived and worked in Bahrain for many years both Bahraini and British. We understand what frustrations and hurdles
1940s. How is the relationship more than 80 years on?
Very successful. It was started by my father, Rashid, at a time when our family had always been traditionally in the pearling business. It was very hard for my father to convince my grandfather to go into other businesses because it was not customary. One of the earliest ventures that he did was to create a relationship with a brand called Austin Cars and the emerging Land Rover, and marketed them around the Gulf. From the auto industry,
the businesses here face because we have faced them. We know what hindrances exist for incoming business because our own businesses have dealt with them. Every business is unique but we are confident that we have the breadth of experience required to help support them in their business journey.
Secondly, we have amongst our own membership all of the capability and expertise required by incoming and existing business. We pride ourselves on our business networking, it’s our cornerstone, and we mobilise that network to help new businesses get established within our database and in doing so we generate new business for existing members.
What initiatives or programmes does the chamber intend to introduce or expand upon in its new capacity?
we expanded into so many other products such as goods, machinery, real estate, and we even recently refitted the whole grid of the UK from Scotland to Wales with Midal cables.
Is there anything else to add?
I would like to see many Bahrainis and foreigners reaching out to us. They will be very surprised at how much they can learn from existing information that will enhance their businesses and create new businesses for themselves.
As a direct response to recent feedback from our members as well as a review of existing database information, we have developed a programme of more frequent business and sector-specific meetings for business support and networking.
Our new programme is called ‘Meet Me @ The Hub, ’a fantastic business centre set up and managed by our strategic partner ServCorp Bahrain, located at the Bahrain Financial Harbour with the team run by the dynamic Danni Hunneyball.
Anything more to add?
The pandemic has shown us that the world is a very small market place and that it can
be worked in a different, more efficient way. It is not just filled with global corporations but now also entrepreneurs, business incubators, angel investors, start-ups, SMEs, increasing numbers of young professionals, and of course the industry disrupters. All of this works alongside big changes that we are seeing in the professional and business services sectors.
It’s a very exciting time. But businesses are different now, doing business is different now, and so we must be different. The timing of the British Chamber of Commerce could not be better.

BUB OBTAINS INTERNATIONAL ACCREDITED CENTRE STATUS FROM CIOB
In a recent landmark move, the Bachelor’s degree programmes in engineering disciplines offered by the British University in partnership with the University of Salford – Manchester in the United Kingdom have received accreditation from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Notably, CIOB is the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. Since 1834, CIOB have had a Royal Charter to promote the science and practice of building and construction for the benefit of society.
BUB’s College of Engineering and Technology has obtained the status of an accredited centre from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) in recognition of its commitment to excellence and highquality standards in civil engineering, quantity surveying and construction project management. Obtaining the status of a recognised centre allows BUB to participate in disseminating best practices and the latest research and technologies in the field of building sciences.
Being the first CIOB-accredited centre in Bahrain reaffirms the position of the British University in Bahrain as a leading university that actively contributes to providing high-quality educational programmes in partnership with the University of Salford –Manchester. CIOB Accreditation is a seal of approval for BUB recognising its teaching quality and suitability of its curriculum. It signifies that the highest standards of quality are met and that the learning outcomes of the programme are robust and developed to produce knowledgeable and motivated graduates.
This accreditation allows BUB students to earn an accredited university degree and pursue accredited membership in the CIOB, the most influential body for the certification of construction disciplines, with approximately 50,000 members in more than 100 countries. This accreditation will also enable BUB graduates to work in disciplines covering all areas of the built environment and will allow them to continue their professional development after graduation.
Graduates of BUB’s accredited honours degree programmes will have full exemption to proceed to Chartered Membership by demonstrating the competence requirements through work experience in their graduate roles. Graduates with CIOB recognition are highly respected and sought through the engineering, development and construction sectors through MENA.
BUB will also provide a ‘centre’ in Bahrain for the delivery of training and continuing professional development (CPD) for stakeholders and employers in approved engineering and construction skills courses.
BUB President, Dr. Ebrahim Janahi, says: “The university pays great attention to the professional accreditation of its specialisations, as international certification is one of BUB’s strategic priorities and an extension of the philosophy of our mother university, the University of Salford –Manchester. We are keen on establishing and developing long-term cooperation relationships with all relevant institutions, led by CIOB, to enable faculty members and students, especially in the engineering programme, to build their capabilities and professional relationships and integrate them effectively into the labour market in Bahrain.”
Chair of CIOB Bahrain Hub, Christopher Core, adds: “We look forward to working closely with BUB on joint assignments to develop the skills and knowledge of Bahrain’s youth to enhance their career opportunities in the construction industry.”
Programmes that have been recognised and offer a route to Chartered membership include the undergraduate qualifications in Civil Engineering, Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying as approved programmes in the CIOB education framework.

St Christopher’s School uses a personalised and responsive learning approach that adapts to the needs of all its students. At the heart of it all is a focus on positive and supportive relationships where children and young people feel able to take risks in their learning.
Learning Designed for Success
Faculty members shape their approach to lesson design and teaching by continually reviewing material and engaging in retrieval practice, using deep questioning and consolidation of ideas. The skills of academic writing, analysis, critical thinking and communicating effectively are developed all the way through the school starting from Nursery. The school’s curriculum is designed to ultimately prepare students to undertake the GCSE and A-Level examinations, as well as the BTEC and IB Diploma, meaning that there are many pathways open to them.
Students are supported by their Subject Teachers as well as the pastoral team of Form Tutors and Heads of Year who help them manage the demands of examinations and the development of relevant study skills. The school’s Learning Support team also targets specific areas of support where needed to help students prepare for all examinations.
The success of St Christopher’s approach, since its establishment, has been evident with graduates consistently being accepted into some of the best universities across the world.
Beyond the Classroom
The UK education approach highly values extracurricular learning to support the development of attributes to help students to succeed in their academics, such as creativity, collaboration, compassion and confidence. By connecting with other students outside of the classroom, St Christopher’s students learn independence and teamwork through a range of activities in the fields of music and performing arts, sports, crafts, languages, debating and beyond.
St Christopher’s proactively offers students the opportunity to participate in overseas trips every year ranging from academic, sports, art, music, culture and community service. Students are known to learn beyond the classroom by traveling within the region, all over Europe, to Asia and the USA.
Leveraging Technology
Embracing Bahrain’s Culture
Finally, St Christopher’s considers its curriculum to be the totality of its students’ experiences. Learning through local visits, such as Bahrain Fort visits by students of Year 1 and Year 7, are incorporated to understand the history and geography of Bahrain. In addition, as a whole school community, St Christopher’s celebrates Bahrain National Day and learn about the Bahraini culture through the clothes, food, language, music and activities of Bahrain.
Alongside what is formally taught within the classroom, the school proudly ensures a range of enriching experiences that help each of its children and young people connect with their wonderful host country –Bahrain.
Building on the school’s UK curriculum, technology is used across the school to support learning, whether through platforms that allow children to practice their language skills or to answer curriculum questions to assess their understanding. Students learn to use technology safely and, from Year 2 onwards, develop digital literacy and leadership through the ‘Bring-Your-Own-Device’ programme.
St Christopher’s uses a range of media in lessons to enhance the delivery of ideas and activities, and all children develop ICT and computational thinking skills. Teachers use technology to plan and design the curriculum, as well as to support ongoing assessments, and provide exciting learning opportunities by giving a window into the wider world.

BLIGHTY BAHRAIN IN
As part of our UK in Bahrain supplement, BahrainThisMonthis highlighting key British figures who have helped shape the island into the welcoming, multicultural country it is today. One such pioneer is Steve Blight, who sat down with Kristian Harrison to share his fascinating story forged from 29 years of making a difference in the Kingdom.
Mr. Blight began his professional life as a dedicated educator, shaping the minds of students in Washington, Newcastle. His passion for teaching was evident from the start, as he poured himself into his work, aiming to make a difference in the lives of his students.
Reflecting on his time in the classroom, he fondly recalls: “It was during those early years that I realised how much impact a teacher can have and how much pride it gave me to see children who could barely say a word flourish into talented, confident young adults.”
Mr. Blight’s sense of adventure would lead him to wanting to spread his wings. The perfect opportunity arose in 1995, when he embarked on a new chapter by accepting a position to help establish the British School of Bahrain. Moving to the Middle East was a significant shift, both culturally and professionally, but he embraced the challenge with open arms.
“Bahrain opened my eyes to so much I hadn’t experienced before,” he reflects. “It was like jumping into a pool of new cultures and opportunities. I had four and a half brilliant years at BSB, but in the year 2000 I decided to do something else and got involved in the hospitality industry.”
Transitioning from the classroom to Bahrain’s entertainment scene, Mr. Blight brought his trademark enthusiasm and passion to his new profession. From managing popular venues like the original Sherlock Holmes at the Gulf Hotel to overseeing operations at the prestigious Royal Golf Club, he thrived in the fast-paced world of hospitality.
“I’ve always loved the buzz of the hospitality industry,” he admits. “It’s like every day is a new adventure, with its own challenges and rewards.”
Despite the exhilarating highs and inevitable challenges of working in nightlife, his journey continued to evolve. He transitioned seamlessly into roles that capitalised on his
expertise, from being a Sales Manager at African & Eastern, launching popular brands of selective beverages, to assuming the mantle of a Brand Manager and then Director of Sales at Gulf Brands International, while also being Club House Manager at Bahrain Rugby Football Club for five and a half years.
A major obstacle arrived in 2020 when, after a chance meeting with the former British Ambassador to the Philippines in London, Mr. Blight agreed to accompany a trade delegation to the Asian nation to propose a better ‘Assisted Style of Living Accommodation’ for older people to offer them a greater quality of life. Whilst there, he took a short holiday to an island ostensibly for six days, but ended up being
stranded there for 10 months thanks to COVID-19 lockdowns.
He eventually returned to Bahrain that December with a fresh impetus, and took up a position with the National Hotel Services Company (NHSC), where he remains today.
However, Mr. Blight’s journey is far from over, and he eagerly anticipates the next chapter, wherever it may lead. When asked to offer advice for any potential Britons looking to move to Bahrain, he posits: “I’d definitely say yes, come over. It’s a great chance to engage and integrate with a diverse population and learn a lot about multiculturalism. Most of all, especially if you’re a teacher, you can nurture the next generation and mould them into top class citizens in an amazing environment.”

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION
The UK’s Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) is a globally recognised professional body for construction management and leadership, dedicated to promoting excellence in the field of construction through education, standards and professional development. Its President, Sandi Rhys Jones, gave an exclusive interview to Bahrain This Month during a recent visit to the Kingdom as part of the CIOB’s role in shaping the construction industry’s trajectory.
Ms. Rhys Jones immediately highlighted the Kingdom’s unique position as a vibrant construction hub, both regionally and internationally. “Bahrain is a very special place with numerous exciting developments in the education of young people entering the industry, addressing a major problem,” she posits.
“It’s not just about vocational and professional training but also about encouraging more young women to join the sector, something which is done very well here. My visit aims to engage with this dynamic community and explore opportunities for collaboration.”
Addressing the evolution of Bahrain’s construction sector, Ms. Rhys Jones emphasised common
challenges such as regulation, safety and skill shortages.
She stressed the importance of collaboration in overcoming these hurdles, advocating for interdisciplinary teams to efficiently deliver projects.
The CIOB’s role, she believes, is in facilitating knowledge-sharing and dialogue to address industry challenges, particularly in areas like sustainability and communication. She emphasised the importance of practical action and fostering engagement with policymakers to drive meaningful change.
“We have seen success in knowledge-sharing through platforms like the Construction Management magazine, which engages professionals across disciplines. Our focus on people
who make a difference and projects that matter extends beyond our membership, fostering a broader community. Initiatives like fellowship forums facilitate networking and expertise sharing. By nurturing this sense of community, we can drive continuous improvement in the industry.”
Looking to the future, Jones expressed optimism about the CIOB’s growth, aiming to surpass its current international membership of nearly 50,000.
“By fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing and communitybuilding initiatives, we aim to attract more professionals to join our cause and contribute to the advancement of the construction industry,” she concludes.

GOING THE DISTANCE
Ahmed AlMutawa, a 24-year-old Bahraini long-distance runner, has emerged as a beacon of inspiration and philanthropy in the running community. In an exclusive interview with Kristian Harrison, Ahmed delves into his personal journey, motivations and aspirations, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs that have defined his path.
Ahmed’s
passion for running was ignited during his time living in Boston for three years, where he was captivated by the electrifying atmosphere surrounding the iconic Boston Marathon. This fascination eventually propelled him to take up running seriously in December 2022, with aspirations of tackling his first marathon by February 2023. However, Ahmed’s early foray into the world of long-distance running was marked by naivety. He candidly admits: “Looking back, it’s quite funny how naive I was thinking I can just pull up to a marathon and run it! The reality of the meticulous preparation and dedication required took a little while to dawn on me, but I was determined to succeed.”
One of Ahmed’s most remarkable feats to date is his 67km run from Diyar Al Muharraq to Durrat Al Bahrain, a testament to his grit and endurance. Motivated by the desire to push his limits and challenge himself, Ahmed embarked on his daunting journey earlier this year. Reflecting on the experience, he shares: “All my training for the past two years got me to the point where I felt comfortable taking on such a challenge. I ran it in just over six hours and it really took a lot out of me. It was even more tiring than I ever imagined and worst of all, I was on my own for the entire run which looking back was a very bad call. Thankfully I was able to finish the run safely but if something was to go wrong and I had no one around to help, it was a pretty dangerous thing, so if I did again I definitely would seek some support.”
Beyond his personal pursuits, Ahmed is deeply committed to giving back to his community. During Ramadan, he organised a charity drive for the Islamic Association, collecting
donations of sports items for those in need. The initiative proved to be a resounding success, with him collecting 139 items of clothing and 36 pairs of shoes.
Looking ahead, Ahmed’s ambitions encompass both personal achievements and inspiring others. He has his sights set on competing in international marathons later this year, and recently ticked off another major achievement by notching 100,000 steps in a day. Most proudly, he seeks to serve as a role model for aspiring runners, sharing his insights and experiences on his Instagram page @runningwithahmed to empower others on their own journeys. When asked for his sage advice rooted in his own experiences, he explains: “Go out on your first run, see how long you can go for and set that as your base. Patience is key and progress doesn’t happen overnight.”
Despite his achievements, Ahmed remains acutely aware of the challenges facing runners in Bahrain, particularly concerning road safety. He advocates for the development of safer running environments, envisioning larger parks and even an indoor track to provide runners with alternative options. With his voice and platform, Ahmed strives to catalyse positive change and create a more inclusive and supportive running community while pursuing more charity initiatives.
“Despite it being an individual hobby most of the time, I’d like to give a big shout out to all of my supporters, friends and family who push me to do better every day!” he concludes.

MASTERING THE MILES
If you’ve been meaning to upgrade your workout routine, give running a try. Bahrain This Month’s resident health buff, Edwin D’Souza, walks you through the process with his Comprehensive Guide to Running Success.
Running is more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it’s a dynamic blend of endurance, technique and preparation. Whether you’re a novice aiming to increase your distance or a seasoned runner looking to refine your form, this comprehensive guide will equip you with the tools and knowledge to enhance your running experience.
INCREASING YOUR RUNNING DISTANCE
Consistency is key when it comes to increasing distance, so aim to establish a strategic running schedule that fits into your lifestyle. Listen to your body and adjust your pace and distance as needed to prevent overexertion and injury. Begin by setting realistic goals and gradually increasing your mileage each week. Incorporate a mix of long runs, tempo runs and recovery runs into your training regimen to build endurance while allowing your body time to rest and recover Remember to celebrate small victories along the way and trust in the process of gradual progression.
Cross-training activities such as cycling or swimming can help improve overall fitness and prevent overuse injuries.
THE TECHNIQUE OF RUNNING
Efficient running technique enhances performance and reduces injury risk. Maintain good posture − straighten your spine, relax your shoulders, and keep your head facing forward. Land softly on midfoot or forefoot with each stride to minimise impact and maximise energy efficiency.
Stride length and cadence are crucial for smooth motion. Gradually increase cadence to improve efficiency and reduce joint stress. Engage core muscles for balance and stability. Keep arms relaxed and bent at a 90-degree angle for natural movement. Breathe deeply and rhythmically to fuel muscles and maintain a steady pace.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT GEAR
Choosing the right clothing and footwear is crucial for running performance and comfort. Choose moisture-wicking fabrics for dryness and lightweight, breathable clothing for freedom of movement. Selecting the right shoes is essential for your unique foot shape and gait.
Consider factors like terrain, distance and personal preferences when choosing shoes.
Test multiple pairs to find the perfect fit and invest in quality footwear to protect your feet and enhance your running experience. The best recommended trainers for running as of today are Brooks Ghost 15, Adidas Ultra-boost, and Nike Zoom Air.
HYDRATION STRATEGIES
Hydration is crucial for performance, preventing dehydration and promoting recovery during and after a run. Start by drinking 450 ml of water or sports drink 2-3 hours before exercise, and an additional 200ml 10-20 minutes before starting.
Drink 100 ml of fluids every 20 minutes during the run, using a sports drink with carbohydrates and electrolytes. Experiment with different hydration strategies and listen to your body’s cues to determine your individual fluid needs. Post-run hydration is equally important, so drink 500ml within two hours to focus on replenishing fluids lost through sweat.
Mastering the art of running requires a combination of dedication, technique and proper preparation. So, lace up your shoes, hit the pavement and embark on your journey to becoming a stronger, more resilient runner.
WARM-UPS AND STRETCHES
Prior to starting your run, incorporate dynamic warm-up exercises to prepare your body for the physical demands of running. Dynamic stretches such as leg swings, high knees and hip circles help increase blood flow, flexibility and range of motion while reducing the risk of injury.
After completing your run, transition to static stretches to improve flexibility and prevent muscle tightness. Focus on targeting key muscle groups such as the calves, hamstrings, quadriceps and hip flexors with stretches such as calf stretches, hamstring stretches, and hip flexor stretches. Hold each stretch for

MIND OVER MATTER
Since 1949, May has been observed across the world as Mental Health Awareness Month. Boardcertified Behaviour Analyst, Fifi Kiwan, helps us understand brain health and its connection to mental well-being on the occasion.
The brain is one of the most complex and fascinating parts of the human body. It is responsible for all functions of the body including how we move, communicate, make decisions and interpret our surroundings. Our brain also processes our thoughts, behaviours, feelings and emotions. This is why we can’t talk about mental health without looking at brain health.
Our mental health is intricately connected to the health and functioning of our brains. The brain is the control centre that regulates our thoughts, emotions, behaviours and overall psychological well-being. When the brain is operating optimally, we are typically able to manage stress, maintain healthy relationships and find fulfillment in life. However, when the brain is not functioning properly due to chemical imbalances, structural abnormalities or other issues, it can lead to the development of various mental disorders.
Looking after our brain health can improve our overall cognitive functioning, resilience and our psychological well-being. It helps us cope with day-to-day stress and live a meaningful life.
One of the primary ways the brain influences our mental health is through the production and regulation of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that allow neurons in the brain to communicate with each other. Some of the key neurotransmitters involved in mental health include serotonin, dopamine,
norepinephrine and GABA. An imbalance or dysregulation of these neurotransmitters has been linked to conditions like depression, anxiety, ADHD and addiction.
Furthermore, the brain’s neuroplasticity, or its ability to adapt and change over time, plays a crucial role in mental health.
Here are things we can do to protect our brain and promote good mental health:
1. Prioritise Connection:
Humans are social creatures. That’s why connecting with people and our community doesn’t just feel good, it’s good for our mental health. When we spend time with people we care about, our brain releases higher levels of feelgood neurochemicals including oxytocin – also known as the love hormone. Whether it’s a phone call, a coffee chat or a walk with a friend, these simple dates can help manage stress and promote positive feelings.
2. Move for Your Mood
Physical activity is the ultimate mood booster and a key player in fostering good mental health. When you exercise, your brain releases endorphins that reduce feelings of pain and increase feelings
of pleasure. Exercise can also help you cope with stress, reduce anxiety and depression, help you think clearer and increase self-esteem.
3. Engage in a New Hobby
Hobbies such as painting, playing an instrument, gardening or reading have been shown to improve mental health by combatting stress and reducing anxiety and depression. Learning new skills not only keeps your brain active and engaged, but it strengthens the brain’s neuroplasticity which promotes overall cognitive functioning and healthy aging.
4. Practice Sleep Hygiene
Quality sleep is not only an important aspect of our well-being, but it’s also fundamental to our brain health. While we sleep, our brain processes memories,
repairs and reorganises cells, removes toxins and releases important molecules such as proteins and hormones. Practicing healthy sleep habits like setting a bedtime, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and finding ways to unwind before bed can go a long way towards keeping us healthy.
5. Get Help If You Need It
Understanding our brain and our cognitive skills functioning level is instrumental to recognising areas of the brain that maybe in need of enhancement. The first step maybe to get a cognitive assessment that allows us to understand our performance levels such as, memory, attention, processing speed and logic and resonating and ultimately enhancing those skills through cognitive training.
Fifi Kiwan is the partner & Managing Director of Bahrain’s first Cognitive Brain Training centre, Brainy Nation. She is also a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) with a dual master’s degree in Developmental Psychology and Applied Behaviour Analysis. She has worked with a multitude of individuals with Neurodevelopment Disabilities ranging from the age of two to 22 using Applied Behaviour Analysis

OUR PICK OF BRUNCH!
Setting the stage for a weekend filled with indulgence and relaxation, the Night Brunch at Mövenpick Hotel Bahrain is a gastronomic extravaganza that promises an unforgettable dining experience. Kristian Harrison was offered the opportunity to check it out.
Taking place every Thursday from 6.30pm to 11pm, this culinary affair unfolds out of Silk’s Restaurant with seating inside the Gallery Lobby Lounge, accompanied by the soulful melodies of the excellent house Cuban band. It was the perfect prelude to what promised to be an evening of gastronomic delight.
From the outset, it was evident that every detail had been meticulously curated to ensure a memorable experience. The warm welcome extended by General Manager Benoit-Joseph Metanomski and his attentive staff set the tone for the evening, again proving that the Mövenpick is a hub of hospitality.
To start off light and easy, I leisurely explored the salad selection, where a kaleidoscope of colours and flavours awaited. From crisp greens to exotic toppings, the array of options catered to every palate, offering a tantalising glimpse of the culinary treasures yet to come.
Next, I made my way to the sushi station, where skilled chefs deftly crafted delicate rolls that were as visually stunning as they were delicious. Each bite was a symphony of flavours, a testament to the expertise and precision of the culinary team.
As the evening unfolded, I found myself drawn to the main courses, each station offering a tempting array of dishes that
beckoned to be savoured. At the pasta station, the aroma of freshly cooked noodles mingled with the heady scent of rich tomato sauce, enticing me to indulge in a plate of beef ravioli that melted in my mouth with each forkful.
But it was at the roast and grill stations that the true magic happened. Here, succulent cuts of meat were expertly cooked to perfection, their enticing aromas filling the air and igniting the senses. From tender beef brisket to juicy lamb chops, each bite was a revelation, but the best was saved to last with the Rib-Eye, done medium-rare and packed with flavour and very little fat.
For those with a penchant for spice, the taco station offered a playful twist, while the selection of international dishes, including the sweet and sour chicken, provided a global influence.
Vegetarians were also well catered for, with a variety of options to tingle the taste buds. The tandoori cauliflower, in particular, stood out with its fiery kick and offering something different.
Of course, no feast would be complete without dessert, and the Night Brunch did not disappoint. From creamy crème brûlée to decadent New
York Cheesecake, each sweet indulgence provided a fitting finale to the evening. Let’s not forget the Mövenpick ice cream, with flavours ranging from rich caramel to indulgent double chocolate chip, providing a cool and refreshing end.
To complement the feast, a wide selection of beverages was on offer, including soft drinks, selected beverages and expertly crafted cocktails.
To sum up, my experience at the Night Brunch was excellent. From the impeccable service to the exquisite cuisine, every moment was a celebration of expert hospitality at one of the Kingdom’s finest venues.

AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS BY THE SPA
At Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay bring a new level of balance
Renowned for providing an immersive getaway on a private island and disconnection from the hustle and bustle of city life, Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is further elevating its island-resort offerings with the launch of Ayurvedic treatments. The luxury destination is Bahrain’s first five-star hotel to offer therapies rooted in India’s ancient wellbeing system, bringing 5,000 years of holistic wisdom to a whole new audience.
Considered to be the world’s oldest healing system, Ayurveda is known as the knowledge of life – a profound lifestyle approach that strives to keep body, mind, spirit and social well-being in balance for optimum health.
Enhancing Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay’s spa menu, traditional healing therapies, three new Ayurvedic treatments are performed by specially trained therapists.
Shirodhara is a classical Ayurvedic treatment starting with a relaxing shoulder massage followed by a steady pour of warm, herbal oil over the forehead − helps ease insomnia, calm the mind, soothe the senses, and bring total equilibrium. Abhyanga is a revitalising full-body massage with warm herb-infused oils using gentle strokes designed to soothe stress, ease muscle aches, support sleep and boost immunity. Regularly soaking the body in the signature oil, results in a series of benefits such as healthy appetite, alertness, feeling less fatigued, peaceful sleep and reduced stress. Indian Head Massage – available as an add-on to Abhyanga or Shirodhara –releases tension and revitalises the entire body via the blissful application of warm oils to the ‘Marma’ (vital energy) points of the shoulders, neck, scalp and face.
For the ultimate Ayurvedic experience, the Ayurveda Day Immersion offers an insightful journey into the heart of Ayurvedic healing, including 60-minute yoga class; 60-minute Abhyanga treatment; 30-minute Shirodhara treatment and 30-minute Indian Head Massage.
With authentic practices as important in Ayurveda as the balancing of the body’s elements with those of nature, the hotel has gone to great lengths to honour the system’s traditions: Teak-wood panchakarma massage beds, handcrafted in India, take Shirodhara to a cabana by the Azure pool, surrounded by the calming influence of swaying palms.
“In Ayurvedic treatments many facets come together to impact our health in profound ways,” comments Director of Spa, Nikolay Dimitrov “Through the introduction of these three classic treatments, we hope to encourage a deeper exploration of this fascinating well-being approach, which ultimately teaches us how to balance the different energies in our body in relation to the world around us.”
Winner of multiple accolades and awards, including Bahrain’s Best Hotel Spa, the 17room Spa at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay is a spacious and serene sanctuary spanning four buildings interlinked with pathways and gardens. Guests booking any Ayurvedic treatment or package can also enjoy a complimentary day pass to enjoy its expansive facilities, including a Himalayan salt inhalation room, Infinity Pool, adults-only Azure pool, steam baths and more.

National Sovereignty and Children’s Day

The Turkish Embassy celebrated National Sovereignty and Children’s Day.
ALL ABOUT MOTORING, MATE!
Firstly, let’s take a look at some facts and figures. Over the past five years, speeding has become a frequent misdemeanour among UK motorists, with nearly one in six drivers falling foul of speed limits. If you thought Bahrain had a lot of speed cameras then you’d be astounded by how many proliferate the roads!
Speaking of fines, back in 1896 the first speeding ticket was issued to Mr. Walter Arnold in Kent. Mr. Arnold had exceeded the speed limit by four times the stated limit and was doing a superfast 8mph! The law at the time indicated that cars could not travel over 2mph and he received a fine of one shilling (now 20p, or 100 fils) from a local policeman. When it comes to aesthetics, grey reigns supreme as the UK’s favourite car colour with more than a quarter of all cars sold being such a warm, bright shade. Well, at least it matches the sky…
Behind the wheel, Britons face a daunting challenge: the driving test. With a pass rate of just 50.2 percent for the theory test and an even lower 47.2 percent for the practical examination, aspiring motorists face some of the strictest examiners in the world. Claims that the consequential high volume of booked tests is in reality a money-making scheme are so far unproven.
When it comes to motoring, the British have contributed immensely to the automotive history. It has also introduced a lot of eccentricity, innovation and sheer quirkiness, too. From iconic cars to peculiar driving traditions, Kristian Harrison takes a delightful dive into the whimsical world of British motoring.
Meanwhile, despite more than 37 million cars being on the roads, there are only currently 8,365 petrol stations serving the nation’s drivers, a far cry from the 37,000 that dotted the country in 1970. It’s no surprise that Britain has a dedicated service to rescuing cars who run out of fuel on the motorway; with an estimated total length of 262,300 miles, if one were to lay out these roads in a straight line into space, they would surpass the distance to the Moon!
Despite Britons’ self-assuredness behind the wheel, as evidenced by 92 percent rating themselves as good drivers, a significant portion – 65 percent, to be precise – admit to exceeding speed limits. Oh, how I would love to run that poll in Bahrain!
There are some places, however, where people won’t be speeding but instead stopping to take in some of the most breathtaking road trips on the planet. From the scenic landscapes of the Scottish
Highlands to the charming villages of the Cotswolds, there’s no shortage of picturesque drives. The most famous is the North Coast 500, Scotland’s equivalent of Route 66, starting and finishing in Inverness.
If you thought traffic was bad in Bahrain, wait until you learn that UK drivers spend around eight months of their life waiting in traffic and a whole four years behind the wheel!
Perhaps the most notorious spot for traffic is Swindon’s Magic Roundabout, often voted the UK’s most terrifying roundabout. Made up of one central and five satellite mini roundabouts, each connecting to the next, you have to see this to believe it. In fact, I’d pay to put a deckchair out and watch the traffic if this was in Bahrain!
As a final note, if you thought getting used to the new Al Fateh Highway was confusing, wait until you visit Spaghetti Junction near Birmingham. The name says it all…

ROLLS-ROYCE REVEALS ‘SPIRIT OF EXPRESSION’
Bespoke Commissions Ahead of 2024 Beijing Motor Show Debut
Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has unveiled ‘Spirit of Expression’ – three magnificent Bespoke commissions of Ghost Extended, Phantom Extended and Spectre, the first-ever creations to emerge from the Private Office Shanghai, opened last year. These striking Bespoke creations made their public debut at the 18th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China 2024). The ‘Spirit of Expression’ commissions perfectly embody the tastes of the younger progressive Chinese clients. Each exterior colourway captures a fleeting moment in time from a number of remarkable destinations around the world frequented by clients from the Greater China region. These range from the vivid bloom of the Lantana
flower in South America to the stunning sands of Sicily’s Cala Luna beach and the expansive sunsets witnessed on Boracay Island in the Western Visayas in the Philippines. Inside each ‘Spirit of Expression’ motor car, a recurring celestial motif celebrates the night sky above these extraordinary locations and the inspirational power of the stars.
Each of these one-of-one commissions has been envisioned as part of a global creative collaboration between the marque’s designers in Goodwood and the Bespoke designer based permanently in the Rolls-Royce Private Office Shanghai.
Ford Mustang is in pole position as America’s best-selling sports car based on 2023 US new vehicle registrations across all sporting segments – and as the best-selling sports car globally for over 10 years.
More than 59,000 customers took delivery of a Mustang in 2023, contributing to the nearly one million pony cars Ford has delivered in the past decade. While 2023’s success was driven by the rollout of the allnew seventh-generation Mustang in North America, customers in China, Europe, Australia, Middle East and South America will be able to get behind the wheel of the latest Mustang in 2024.
As part of Mustang’s 60th anniversary, Ford has debuted a special Vermillion Red and Ebony Black logo, inspired by the badging and wheel center caps on the Mustang that debuted at the 1964 World’s Fair, at the New York Auto Show.
“We are incredibly excited to introduce the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse to the Middle East, envisioning its triumphant journey” says Director of Ford and Lincoln Marketing, Commercial Vehicles and Fleet, Pedro Simões. The all-new, seventh-generation Mustang is the latest chapter for the icon. MONEY AND YOU
WhenBusiness Consultant Pria Masson discusses how people deal with money and the need to identify our approach to handling it.
I work with clients, one of the most interesting things I like to notice is how they respond to financial discussions. It would seem logical that any business needs money, just like any household needs money. Given that it is such an essential aspect of life and work, it almost feels like saying people respond differently to breathing. The reality is, when something is so essential, each of us has our unique relationship with it. This month, I’m still talking about money, but I am talking about money and you (or me) and how we all deal with it is such a unique manner.
Think of money as the vehicle that determines how you experience life, and you are the driver. On the road, there are all sorts of drivers, here it’s no different. In my opinion, broadly, there are individuals who are fearful of money, those who understand and sort of flow with money, those that like to ignore money (“I don’t get numbers”) and the ones that hold on to it very dearly. The question is: which one are you and how can you manage this very important relationship?
Let’s do a very simple test. If I were to tell you, that you need to make a big purchase, how do you go about it? Usually there are a few reactions. Those that ʹgetʹ money, will usually immediately delve into the details of pros and cons, financing and funding and
figure out a way to make it work. The ones who are fearful will likely need some time to process the information. This processing is not in terms of lists and details, but usually more in terms of wrapping their head around the fact that they need to make those lists and handle that matter. Those that ignore money will usually point me in the direction of a partner or employee who they would have put in charge of money matters, if they have such an individual. If they don’t, usually, the business is not too big or too successful. Finally, the ones that hold on to money will painstakingly go over every option that could somehow prevent that expense or lower its burden. Honestly, there is no right or wrong way to handle it. It’s more about how you experience the process.
What can you do with this information? Well, you may have heard of the idea of a ʹlove languageʹ which is how each of us expresses love and care differently. This is similar, we each react differently based on how we initially interacted with money, and how we saw our caregivers interact with it. This then likely forms our basis of how we handle money.
But what does that mean for your business or personal funds? It means, you have a pattern. We all do. And we play out that pattern. If you understand that pattern,
regular interactions involving money play out more easily. So, know your own pain point and make the experience more comfortable for you. If you don’t like deal with money, make sure you have a partner who does. If both don’t, hire someone who can help you. If you tend to hold on to key expenses because short term money outflows bother you, have a mentor who can advise you through the process. If you tend to overthink and overanalyse, bring someone who flows with money on board.
The answer lies in balance; however, you need to know what you’re balancing. Medical professionals often say, if you can’t diagnose a problem, you can’t find a solution. So, understand your relationship with money. You do not need to aim to change it, but you do need to learn to manage it – just like any relationship.

Cowboy Carter Beyoncé
Verdict:
The icon successfully strays from her comfort zone.
What’s the story?
Cowboy Carter is the eighth studio album by American superstar Beyoncé. A concept album, Cowboy Carter is the second of a planned trilogy of albums, following Renaissance (2022). Beyoncé conceived Cowboy Carter as a journey through a reinvention of Americana, spotlighting the overlooked contributions of Black pioneers to American musical and cultural history. Although many have labelled it a country album, Cowboy Carter blends diverse musical genres including pop, hip hop, trap, psychedelic funk, blues, soul, rock, rock and roll, opera, Irish jig and folk music.
Worth a listen?
From the start of Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé makes it clear this ain’t your typical country album. Opening epic Ameriican Requiem is part gospel, part-Queen, part-Buffalo Springfield as the artist lays out both her intentions and lineage. Like everything Beyoncé has done, specifically in the last decade of her career, Cowboy Carter is a college dissertation of an album: richly researched and meticulously constructed. And while she has something to prove to a whole musical community, it’s more of a love letter to her Southern roots. Five years in the making, Cowboy Carter goes long but moves easy, with some of Beyoncé’s best vocal work on record.
Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran Shakira
In the seven years between studio albums, Shakira essentially became a singles artist, maintaining her ubiquity through globe-conquering collaborations. On 2024’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran (‘Women No Longer Cry’), the international pop icon collects the bulk of those previously one-off hits and unites them with a batch of fresh tracks. Las Mujeres chronicles almost a decade of the singer’s life, which included a muchpublicised split which, and stands as one of the strongest, most thematically cohesive statements of her career.
Everything I Thought It Was
Justin Timberlake
In the immediate decade following his boy band peak with *NSYNC, Justin Timberlake was on top of the pop. The 2010s was a period of diminishing returns, so it’s good to see that his big 2024 comeback, Everything I Thought It Was, mostly avoids that downward trend, offering a decent attempt at recapturing his former glory, but lacking enough excitement to be truly memorable. That’s not to say it’s a complete miss: for every disappointing moment, there’s a whiff of the emotion and charisma that propelled his solo ascendance. Plus, his voice is still in fine form.
Heaven :x: Hell
Sum 41
Capping nearly three decades on the scene, Sum 41 bid farewell the only way they really could: merging their punk and metal extremes on the sprawling double album Heaven :x: Hell. All those years of stylistic evolution collide on this 20-song collection, which is split evenly into the pop-punk Heaven side and the metal-leaning Hell side (naturally). Finding the sweet spot among Billy Talent, Green Day and blink-182, this is standard, anthemic pop-punk goodness, designed for fist-pumping and light moshing, all centred on Deryck Whibley’s acrobatic vocals. As far as swan songs go, Heaven :x: Hell is a heartfelt goodbye to fans, an overly generous gift that aims to please the full spectrum of diehards and thank them for all their years of dedication.

Maison Rami Kadi recently unveiled “Les Miroirs” Collection in a spectacular show at AlUla in Saudi Arabia, and it is divine.
Womanthismonth.com 76 May 2024 FASHION | news
In an evening that seamlessly wove together the threads of haute couture and the raw beauty of AlUla, Maison Rami Kadi presented its Spring/Summer 2024 collection, “Les Miroirs,” in a fashion show held on April 22 in the heart of this enigmatic wonder. This event marked a groundbreaking moment as Rami Kadi became the first Arab designer to partner with AlUla Moments.
The show captivated the audience with a lineup of 40 exquisite gowns, including ten pieces exclusively designed for the occasion. With designs inspired by the natural landscapes, architectural marvels, and the region’s rich heritage, the collection showcased innovative use of materials such as holographic elements, recycled plastics, and shattered glass.
Rami Kadi’s designs reflected the essence of AlUla, with a colour palette drawn from the desert’s serene beauty and the architectural wonder of Maraya, the world’s largest mirrored building located within the area’s Ashar Valley. The evening’s highlight included a bridal gown ensemble inspired by the natural flora of the region, symbolising the interconnectedness of life and the sense of freedom found in AlUla’s vast landscapes. This bridal collection, which showcases three gowns, captures the floral diversity of the area, inviting a dialogue with nature’s unparalleled beauty.
The collection also unveiled a stunning array of accessories, crafted with silver and gold to mirror the resilience and beauty of AlUla’s desert flora. These accessories were done in a unique collaboration with Madrasat Addeera, AlUla’s creative arts centre teaching local woman handicrafts to promote self-sufficiency and regional traditions. Madrasat Addeera is today a cornerstone of AlUla’s bustling AlJadidah Arts District, offering workshops that span all types of traditional arts, such as jewellery, embroidery and ceramics, including those historically found in this area.
Reflecting on the show, Rami Kadi says, “Presenting ‘Les Miroirs’ in AlUla has been a profound journey, blending the narratives of ancient civilisations with the ethos of modern design.”
This sentiment is deeply intertwined with AlUla’s rich cultural identity, a place where art is literally inscribed into the landscapes, sculpted and carved over millennia by civilisations such as the Romans, the Nabataeans, and the Dadanites.
This remarkable event not only showcased Maison Rami Kadi’s latest collection but also underscored the transformative power of AlUla as a muse for artists, designers, and creators, reinforcing the region’s growing reputation as a global destination for arts, culture, and nature enthusiasts.

FOR THE DISCERNING CONNOISSEUR –
MARACOCA
The Geneva-based luxury fragrance atelier, AMAFFI, has revealed the debut of its latest scents, Maracoca, for men and women. Maracoca’s blend of extremely rare and difficult-to-source ingredients is a testament to the dedication and precision required to create a true work of art.
Maracoca for Women, created by Master Perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour, is a seductive harmony of sensual jasmine, sweet white gardenia, spicy frangipani, and additional notes of tonka beans, passion fruit, and lively yuzu.
“For Maracoca, the idea was to create a wonderful perfume, representing an orange blossom, that can smell like a flower on its own, but also with nuance of neroli oil. The luminosity and effervescence of the perfume is achieved through a delicate balance of exotic fruit notes, with mango and neroli oil melding seamlessly together to create an enticing olfactory symphony,” says Duchaufour.
Maracoca is housed in a lavish lacquered box, finished in a pristine pearl white hue and adorned with an abstract multi-coloured motif. The box features a gleaming medallion bearing the fragrance name and a lock with the AMAFFI Perfume House logo, while the interior of the box is lined in removable plush pink velvet that allows the box to be repurposed as an elegant jewellery box.

Starting a New Chapter
Hanan Marhoon is an accomplished academic and a loving mother of two with a passion for children’s literature. She tells Farah Baig about the establishment of Chapters by Hanan, a book club which she hopes will nurture a love for reading among Bahrain’s children.
80 May 2024
PEOPLE | interview Womanthismonth.com
Although her academic background lies in Business Studies and Finance, Hanan’s passion for reading and books has always been a significant part of her life. As a mother, she values education and creativity, fostering these in her own children through her love for books which was instilled in her by her own mother.
“As a full-time mum to two wonderful girls, aged eight and five, I’ve had the privilege of investing my time in their development, both socially and academically. Through extensive reading of articles and studies, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of child psychology, which has not only benefited my own children but has also equipped me to effectively engage with other children,” says Hanan.
Her academic journey began with a Crown Prince Programme scholarship for her high school studies, followed by a degree in Business Studies from Bangor University, UK. She spent seven transformative years in Paris which greatly shaped her global perspective. Hanan’s international experience has honed her adaptability and resilience both in her personal and professional life.
Now, Hanan is a proud advocate for children’s literature, emphasising its role in inspiring and educating young minds. “While my career path may not have initially been in education, my dedication to nurturing young minds has become a fulfilling aspect of my life journey,” she says.
The book club, Chapters by Hanan, caters to children ages eight and older so they are developmentally ready to engage with the material. The groups convene at bookstores across the Kingdom that have been supportive of the initiative including Sophia Bookstore in Muharraq – Chapters by Hanan’s first home, NEO Bookstore in Riffa, Jarir Bookstore in Seef Area and Isa Cultural Centre’s Children’s Library.
When asked what the inspiration was behind starting the club, she joyfully states that it stemmed from observing her eldest daughter Al Joory develop a genuine passion for reading. “Witnessing her enthusiasm in exchanging books with her school friends sparked an idea to nurture this habit further. I suggested starting a small book club to foster her circle of friends and encourage their shared love for reading. From that simple suggestion, Chapters by Hanan organically grew into a thriving community,” she says.
“My ultimate goal is to instill a lifelong love for reading and learning in children. By fostering a supportive community centred around books, I aim to cultivate critical thinking skills, broaden vocabulary and encourage creativity and imagination. Ultimately, I aspire to empower young
readers with the tools they need to navigate the world around them with confidence and curiosity,” she adds.
Since its inception, Chapters by Hanan has done just that having welcomed a total of 130 children into its fold. Each group typically consists of eight to 10 members, ensuring an intimate and engaging environment for discussion and activities.
For flexibility and to accommodate as many young readers as possible, the group offer various sessions throughout the week with each member having four sessions per month with each session lasting an hour and 15 minutes. This aligns with the needed for each young reader to delve into the selected chapter books.
“To support their reading journey and ensure the completion of the book by the end of the month, each participant receives a book map and a structured plan aiding them in tracking their progress throughout the weeks,” she explains.
“During our sessions, we not only discuss the book’s content but also delve into practical skills, such as utilising dictionaries effectively. Additionally, we engage in various activities tailored to each book, sourced from our dedicated activity book, featuring word searches, puzzles and crosswords. Furthermore, we take the opportunity to explore and understand the inner workings of bookstores, enriching our understanding of the literary world,” she adds.
Children who are interested in joining the book club can easily do so by accessing the registration link provided on Hanan’s Instagram account. The registration form includes basic questions designed to gauge
the child’s readiness to participate in the club.
“Proficiency in English reading is a primary criterion for acceptance, as the selected books range from medium to hard difficulty levels. This ensures that participants can grasp a broader vocabulary and comprehend plot intricacies with the characters involved,” she states.
Hanan is keen on fostering a sense of community within Chapters by Hanan, encouraging parents to register siblings, friends, or cousins together. “By maintaining connections among peers, the shared experience of the book club becomes a consistent and mutually reinforcing habit, especially when they interact outside of our sessions,” she says. “As for the future, I envision expanding our reach and impact. Ideally, I hope to find a like-minded team who shares our values and can replicate the enriching experience we offer to even more children.”
“I’d like to thank my partner Ali for supporting me through this journey. I’d also like to make a special mention of the bookstores which have not only proved to be immersive venues for the children but have never asked for a monetary exchange since they all believed in the idea and encouraged it!” she concludes.
Those interested in joining the book club can reach out to Hanan through Instagram with the handle @chaptersbyhanan or by emailing chaptersbyhanan@gmail.com.

WHAT’S FOR DINNER
BEEF WELLINGTON
Beef Wellington is a classic English dish that embodies elegance and culinary sophistication. The delectable entrée features juicy beef tenderloin, mushroom duxelles and puff pastry baked to golden perfection. Follow this recipe to recreate this masterpiece at home to impress your guests with a Beef Wellington that rivals those found in fine dining restaurants.
Ingredients
2 lb (900g) beef tenderloin
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 tbsps olive oil
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
8 oz (225g) mushrooms, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 shallots, finely chopped
2 tablespoons thyme leaves, finely chopped
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed if frozen
1 egg, beaten
Flour
Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. Season the beef tenderloin generously with salt and pepper. In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Sear the beef on all sides until nicely browned, about two to three minutes on each side. Remove from the skillet and let it cool slightly.
3. Brush the entire surface of the beef tenderloin with Dijon mustard. This will add flavour and help the mushroom mixture adhere to the meat.
4. In the same skillet, add a little more olive oil. Add the chopped mushrooms, garlic, shallots, and thyme. Cook until the mushrooms have released their moisture and the mixture is golden brown, about eight to ten minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
5. Remove the mushroom mixture from the heat and let it cool slightly.
6. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle, big enough to wrap the beef tenderloin completely.
7. Spread the mushroom mixture evenly over the puff pastry,
leaving a border around the edges.
8. Place the seared beef tenderloin on top of the mushroom mixture.
9. Carefully fold the puff pastry over the beef, ensuring that it is completely enclosed. Trim any excess pastry and crimp the edges to seal.
10. Transfer the wrapped beef Wellington onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, seam side down.
11. Brush the pastry with beaten egg, which will give it a beautiful golden sheen when baked.
12. Using a sharp knife, make a few small slits on top of the pastry to allow steam to escape during baking.
13. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the beef reaches your desired level of doneness.
14. Remove from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
15. Serve slices of the Beef Wellington with your favourite sides, such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or a simple green salad.

WHAT’S UNSTRUCTURED PLAY?
Woman This Month’s Parenting Columnist, Ouiam El Hassani, tells us why unstructured play is crucial for children’s development.
As parents, we often work towards introducing some level of structure into our children’s lives, but this structure doesn’t necessarily need to make its way into their playtime.
Unstructured play is play without predetermined rules. It is spontaneous, often made-up on the spot, and changeable as the day goes on. It is the kind of play you see
when puppies chase each other around a yard in endless circles or a group of kids play for hours in a fort they created out of old boxes.
Unstructured play is fun—no question about it—but research also tells us that it is critically important for the development of children’s bodies and brains.
One of the best ways to encourage unstructured play in young children is by providing toys that can be used in multiple ways. Providing time and oppurtunities for unstructured play may be the best gift you offer your child today.
HERE’S WHY UNSTRUCTURED PLAY IS CRUCIAL FOR CHILDREN:
IT POSITIVELY CHANGES BRAIN STRUCTURES
Play actually changes the structure of the developing brain, strengthening the connections of the neurons (nerve cells) in the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain considered to be the executive control centre responsible for solving problems, making plans and regulating emotions. Because unstructured play involves trying out different strategies without particular goals or serious consequences, children as well as animals get to practice different activities during play and see what happens. Experts say that it teaches us how to deal with the unexpected—a critically important skill in today’s uncertain world.
It’s cognitive benefits are profound. As children experiment and explore, they learn about cause and effect, problemsolving, and critical thinking. They develop their imaginations as they create stories and scenarios. It also lays the foundation for future learning, as children develop a natural curiosity and a love for exploration. In a world that often demands conformity and pre-defined success, unstructured play provides a vital space for children to be themselves, explore their individuality, develop their own interests, and discover their passions. It’s a time to simply be a child.
IT ENCOURAGES HEALTHY INTERACTIONS
It used to be thought that animal play was simply practice so that they could become more effective hunters. However, research has shown that play serves an entirely different function: which is teaching young animals how to interact with others in positive ways. Play helps build pro-social brains.

CHILDREN WHO PLAY ARE OFTEN BETTER STUDENTS
The social skills acquired through play may help children become better students. Research has found that the best predictor of academic performance in the eighth grade was a child’s social skills in the third grade. Countries where they actually have more recess such as Finland, tend to have higher academic performance than countries where recess is less.
IT GETS KIDS MOVING
One of the most significant benefits of unstructured play is the development of a child’s physical well-being. Running, jumping, climbing, and building all contribute to gross motor skills, while manipulating smaller objects like blocks or toy cars enhances fine motor skills. Unstructured play often takes place outdoors, exposing children to fresh air and sunlight, which is vital for their overall well-being.
It is tempting in today’s busy world for us to fill every minute of their day with structured activities, but is it necessary?
Remember to carve out time for unstructured play; time for kids to get together with absolutely nothing planned and no particular goals in mind — except having fun.
