DIPLOMATIC TIES THAT THRIVE
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month, US Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Steven C. Bondy, discusses the dynamic relationship between the United States of America and the Kingdom of Bahrain and reviews the progress and future aspirations of this longstanding partnership of shared stability and prosperity.
Your Excellency, how would you describe the current state of US relations with Bahrain?
Relations are thriving and moving from strength to strength. The last 12 months have included important milestones in our bilateral relations, notably the signing of the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement (C-SIPA) by Secretary of State Antony Blinken and the Crown Prince and Prime Minister HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa in September of 2023. This agreement significantly upgrades our strategic relationship, formalising our cooperation to deter conflict, enhance regional stability and increase cooperation in technology, trade and investment.
I am proud of the growing people-to-people ties between Americans and Bahrainis.
I enjoyed sharing American hip-hop and breakdancing during the Spring of Culture festival and meeting many Bahraini leaders who participated in US Embassy exchange programmes. In healthcare, education, law enforcement and filmmaking, Americans and Bahrainis work side-by-side, sharing best practices and ensuring our partnerships and friendships will flourish in the years to come.
What are the key areas of cooperation between the two nations?
C-SIPA enhances our cooperation in three primary areas. First, it expands our security and defense collaboration to bolster regional stability and prosperity. Second, it
strengthens our commercial relationship, focusing on trade and investment opportunities in areas like supply chain resilience and infrastructure. Third, it expands our cooperation in science, advanced technology, artificial intelligence and information and communications technology How is the United States supporting Bahrain’s Vision 2030 economic diversification plan?
United States-Bahrain trade and investment are at near-historic levels. Our governments recognise that emerging technology will shape the future. Many American companies are interested in working in Bahrain to pursue regional opportunities and benefit from our close bilateral partnership. We facilitate the
exchange of innovative ideas, information and skills between our societies. From FinTech to artificial intelligence, connectivity and data centres, this innovation will reshape industries, forming more sustainable, competitive and fair economies.
Can you discuss any recent joint military exercises, security achievements or partnerships between the two countries?
As the host nation for US Naval Forces Central Command, the US Navy 5th Fleet and the Combined Maritime Forces, Bahrain is a key contributor to United States and coalition security efforts. Bahrain participates in numerous regional security initiatives, including Operation Prosperity Guardian, defending commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Bahrain’s security partnership with the United States extends beyond the region, as demonstrated by our long involvement in the F-16 fighter jet programme. Bahrain is the first to fly the advanced F-16 Block 70 jets, receiving the first three earlier this year.
How do you see Bahrain’s role in the broader context of Gulf and Middle Eastern geopolitics?
During this challenging period, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has visited Bahrain three times, and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin visited once. Their meetings with Bahrain’s leadership have yielded insights and actions the United States has pursued, and we are grateful for our trusting partnership with Bahrain. The Kingdom’s successful hosting of the 33rd Arab Summit showcased its regional leadership and good relations. Both our countries are focused on implementing a ceasefire, releasing hostages and providing more humanitarian assistance to Gaza. Long-term, we aim for Palestinians and Israelis to live in peace and prosperity through the establishment of an independent Palestine.
What are the current trade figures between the two nations? What measures are being taken to enhance bilateral trade and investment?
This year marks 20 years since the United States and Bahrain signed our bilateral Free Trade Agreement and 18 years since it came into force. Since then, two-way trade has nearly quadrupled from USD782 million in 2005 to more than USD3 billion in 2018. In 2022 and 2023, the bilateral trade volume was USD2.85 billion, with trade in services adding about USD1 billion annually. Partnerships between US companies and Bahrain’s public and private sectors have resulted in projects that underpin Bahrain’s economy. The US Embassy’s commercial team and the American Chamber of Commerce of Bahrain help facilitate relationships and trade opportunities.
What are the main challenges facing US businesses looking to invest in Bahrain?
One primary challenge is gaining familiarity with Bahrain’s business landscape and understanding the unique opportunities. As regional economic integration expands, American investors can leverage Bahrain’s strategic location and supportive business environment. We are always ready to assist American companies looking to invest and do business in Bahrain.
What initiatives are in place to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and Bahrain?
People-to-people ties are at the heart of our relationship with Bahrain. More than 130 years ago, Americans extended friendship through healthcare, establishing a school, hospital and church that continue to operate. This dedication has expanded through robust exchanges of students, artists, journalists, youth leaders, entrepreneurs and professionals. The US Embassy offers university scholarships, entrepreneurship training and cultural programmes and Bahrainis are encouraged to follow us on social media for the latest on these initiatives.
Do you have any figures on the number of Bahrainis and Bahrain residents who travelled to the United States from Bahrain in 2023? What measures are being taken to enhance this figure and promote tourism?
Last year, the US Embassy in Manama conducted almost 15,000 visa interviews. Bahrainis receive 10-year visitor visas for tourism, business meetings, or visiting friends and family. Many can renew visas
by mail, avoiding in-person interviews, and those needing interviews have the shortest wait times in the Gulf. In 2022, Bahrain became the first regional country to join the ‘Global Entry’ programme, allowing expedited entry to the United States. How is the embassy working to support American citizens residing or traveling in Bahrain?
We support American citizens during significant moments, such as births, adoptions, crises and emergencies. We process passport applications, notarise documents and issue Consular Reports of Birth Abroad. We assist American families relocating to the United States by processing immigrant visas. For Americans visiting Bahrain, our website offers up-to-date information on visa and entry requirements, safety and contact details. This year, our consular section is also helping US citizens vote in the elections by accepting and mailing absentee ballots.
Is there anything you would like to comment on further?
This is the sixth time I am celebrating American Independence Day on July 4 in Bahrain, over two separate diplomatic tours. It is a privilege to represent the US government and people here and work alongside Bahraini friends, allies and partners. Happy Independence Day!

A MASTER OF MARITIME SECURITY
Vice Admiral George
M. Wikoff serves as the commander of the United States Naval Forces Central Command, United States Fifth Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces.
In an exclusive interview with Bahrain This Month as part of its USA in Bahrain supplement, Vice Adm. Wikoff shared his insights on the current strategic profile of the US Navy in the region, the challenges faced in maintaining maritime security and the crucial collaborations with Bahrain and other international navies.
What are the current strategic profiles for the US Naval Forces Central Command?
I fall under Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti for my role as 5th Fleet commander. Her priorities, which are to preserve peace, respond to crises and win decisively in combat, align with our global priorities. We execute through three lines of effort: warfighters (the people), warfighting (how we do our mission) and our foundation (facilities and support mechanisms).
In my NAVCENT role under General Erik Kurilla, the CENTCOM commander, my task is to preserve maritime security through operations, training and partnerships. We focus on maintaining maritime regional
security and contributing meaningfully to it.
How do you assess the current maritime security environment?
It is challenged and threatened. In the Arabian Gulf, we face threats to shipping and ship seizures in the Straits of Hormuz, such as the recent seizure of the motor vessel
Aries in international waters. In the Indian Ocean and Northern Arabian Sea, piracy has increased but not to the levels seen in 2010-2012. Maritime terrorism is a concern in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden too, as seen with the recent attack on the Motor Vessel Tutor.
Can you elaborate on the key collaborations and partnerships with Bahrain and international navies in particular when it comes to maritime security?
Bahrain has been a tremendous partner, supporting our mission for many decades. The long-term partnership between our Navy and the Royal Bahrain Naval Force is strong and enduring. Bahrain also hosts the Combined Maritime Forces, a 44-nation coalition committed to the International RulesBased Order, showing leadership in maritime security.
How is the integration of new technologies and AI systems transforming your operations?
It’s the future, and it’s arriving quickly. Task Force 59 leads the integration of unmanned and AI technology into maritime operations. We identify operational problems, seek solutions from industry, evaluate them, and if they meet our needs, operationalise them. This multinational task force increases our maritime domain awareness and decision-making efficiency. We also continuously evaluate our cyber hygiene and conduct awareness training to ensure our teams are vigilant against cyber threats.
What do you consider to be the most significant challenges you face in maintaining maritime security, and how are they being addressed?
The three main challenges are instability in the Arabian Gulf, trafficking of illicit materials and piracy. In my capacity as Commander of Combined Maritime Forces, we have three task forces that address these challenges: Task Force 150, led by Canada, focuses on countering illicit trafficking. Task Force 151, led by Brazil, addresses piracy. Task Force 153, led by Italy, ensures maritime security in the Red Sea through Operation Prosperity Guardian, providing assurance and information sharing to the maritime industry.
How do you maintain operational readiness and training for the fleet in such a strategically critical region?
We receive tremendous support from the US Navy in terms of material readiness and training. In Bahrain, we have several training facilities for various operational needs, including boarding procedures and damage control. We also conduct bilateral and multilateral exercises with other navies. Feedback from these exercises helps improve preparatory training for incoming ships.
Are there any specific initiatives in place to ensure that naval operations in Bahrain are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner?
We respect the sea and take measures to minimise environmental impact. We use containment booms and strict guidelines to prevent leaks and spills. We also conduct exercises to respond quickly to any incidents. Additionally, we are moving towards renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint.
What do you see as the future direction of US Naval Forces Central Command over the next five to 10 years in terms of strategic focus and operational capabilities?
I walk to work every day on broken crystal balls of previous NAVCENT commanders, and I hear the glass crushing under my feet for all the projections of how the environment will be in the future! While the future is uncertain, our commitment to the region remains resolute. We will continue to ensure freedom of navigation and maritime security, responding to crises as needed. The United States is deeply committed to the Kingdom of Bahrain and regional security.
Have you any plans to assess the effectiveness of the mental health stand down that was held last year and expand health treatment options to improve wellbeing?
Mental health resources for sailors and their families have expanded significantly in the past decade. We recently held a summit with local and navy mental health professionals to exchange best practices and improve awareness. Reducing the stigma around mental health is a key objective, and we see positive developments from last year’s initiatives. On a more personal basis, you’re here with your family. What are your favourite recreational pursuits when you find the time?
I wish I had a little more time! My wife and I are back in Bahrain after being here from 2015 to 2017. When we left, we never thought we’d get the opportunity to return and we were sad when we left as we looked back with great fondness at our time here, most especially the people we met. Coming back here has been an absolute honour, a terrific experience for us and something that we don’t take for granted. We really appreciate the opportunity to come back to the Kingdom. I have three adult sons that are back in the US, although my youngest son actually was in the Bahrain School last time we were here.
This time around, the job is a little busier to say the least! But it is great to be back and I look forward to when I have time to work on lowering my handicap on the golf course.
FOSTERING TRADE RELATIONS
The American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain (AmCham Bahrain) serves as a crucial bridge between American and Bahraini businesses, providing a platform for dialogue, collaboration and networking. AmCham Bahrain President, Qays H. Zu’bi, spoke to Bahrain This Month to offer his deep insights into this relationship and AmCham’s role in promoting bilateral trade and investment.
“The trade relationship between the United States and Bahrain has seen significant evolution over the years, transitioning from a focus on oil and defence cooperation to a more diverse array of economic interactions,” Mr. Zu’bi states. “This transformation has been marked by the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two nations, which came into effect in 2006. This agreement has been pivotal in enhancing bilateral trade and investment, eliminating tariffs on a vast array of goods and services, while fostering competitiveness in both American and Bahraini businesses.”
By organising trade missions, business forums and networking events, AmCham Bahrain brings together key stakeholders from both nations, thereby creating an environment conducive to investment and growth.
The sectors offering the most promising opportunities for US businesses in Bahrain are diverse and expanding. Mr. Zu’bi highlights the financial services sector, bolstered by Bahrain’s status as a regional financial hub, and the rapidly growing ICT sector, driven by Bahrain’s heavy investment in digital transformation and innovation. The healthcare sector also presents significant potential due to the growing demand for advanced medical services and technologies. Additionally, sectors such as renewable energy, education and tourism are becoming increasingly attractive for US businesses, supported by Bahrain’s strategic location, business-friendly environment and forwardlooking economic policies.
Navigating the Bahraini market can pose challenges for American businesses, but AmCham Bahrain offers a comprehensive suite of services to support market entry and growth. “We provide market intelligence, regulatory and compliance guidance, and facilitate connections with key stakeholders,” Mr. Zu’bi explains. “These services help American companies understand the local business landscape, navigate local laws and regulations, and connect with potential partners, clients and government officials.”
One of the significant impacts of the FTA has been the substantial boost in bilateral trade. US exports to Bahrain and Bahraini exports to the US have increased significantly, facilitated by the elimination of tariffs on a wide range of goods and services. “The FTA has strengthened economic cooperation, paving the way for joint ventures and collaborative projects in various sectors,” Mr. Zu’bi observes. This agreement has also encouraged investment, with many American companies establishing operations in Bahrain and vice versa.
AmCham Bahrain actively engages in initiatives to enhance
economic ties between the US and Bahrain to foster a collaborative and supportive business environment. These include organising trade missions to the United States, promoting collaboration in sectors like ICT and renewable energy and strengthening ties with key stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations and educational institutions.
Networking and collaboration are at the heart of AmCham Bahrain’s mission. “We organise a wide range of events, including business luncheons, industry forums and social gatherings, providing members with ample opportunities to connect and collaborate,” Mr. Zu’bi says. “The chamber also facilitates sector-specific working groups, enabling members to share insights and best practices and offers online platforms for continuous interaction and collaboration.”
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Mr. Zu’bi advises thorough research of the local market and identification of high-growth sectors.
“Leveraging the support services offered by institutions like AmCham Bahrain can be invaluable,” he emphasises. “Building strong local partnerships and understanding cultural nuances are also critical to success.”

SEEING THE BIGGER PICTURE
Dr. Susan E. Saxton, the interim President and CEO at the Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington, DC, brings a wealth of experience from both the business and educational sectors. She talks to Kristian Harrison about her career journey from being the founding President of the American University of Bahrain (AUBH) to her current role at MEI and her roles in fostering growth and innovation.
Reflecting on her career, Dr. Saxton notes, “I began my business career in tax with Arthur Young and after the merger with Ernst & Young, I joined the Entrepreneurial Services Group. There, I developed a passion for start-ups, turn-arounds, growth initiatives and business strategy.” Her trajectory took a significant turn as she ventured into technology events, online delivery and higher education start-ups, solidifying her role as a change agent and ‘fixer’ adept at managing start-ups, mergers and acquisitions, organisational and leadership transitions and growth and scale opportunities.
One of the highlights of Dr. Saxton’s career was her tenure as the founding President of AUBH. “It was such a fulfilling role and a great honour to lead AUBH in its start-up,” she reminisces. “I enjoyed the challenge of creating a new kind of academe for Bahrain as well as exploring all that Bahrain and its neighbouring Arab countries had to offer and I made lifelong friends and colleagues.”
Transitioning to the MEI, Washington’s oldest think tank dedicated solely to the region, Dr. Saxton leverages her experience to lead during a critical period. She emphasises, “Providing leadership at this complex time in the world while ensuring a productive and supportive environment for MEI’s staff and scholars is my main priority.” Her goals include creating a sustainable organisational structure to match the potential of MEI’s focus on quality and impact, growing and allocating resources effectively and enhancing MEI’s strategic priorities with programs and convenings that make it the “go-to” place for US – Middle East affairs. Dr. Saxton’s experience in Bahrain has been instrumental in preparing her for the role at MEI. She reflects: “Certainly, I was able to learn a lot about the GCC culture, traditions and growth potential in
many areas. Bahrain is such a warm and welcoming Kingdom, and I enjoy being part of the community. As a board member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Bahrain, I understood the importance of business and trade, and the role that training and education have in impacting the labour force to support the goals of the country.” Continuing with support of Bahrain, she is honoured to join the distinguished Board of Directors at the American Bahraini Friendship Society (ABFS) in Washington, DC.
Her vision for MEI is to be the leading Middle East-focused institution in the world, delivering high-quality, non-partisan insight, analysis and prescription for thought leaders and policymakers. She envisions MEI growing its convening strength that continues to foster strong relationships between the US and the Middle East by promoting dialogue to build peace, security and prosperity.
A key aspect of her leadership strategy involves working closely with MEI’s board Chairman, General (ret.) John P. Abizaid and the rest of the distinguished members of the board of directors, corporate partners, donors, scholars and staff to ensure alignment around MEI’s mission. “MEI will continue to serve as a preeminent hub at the intersection of policy, education and culture which will enhance cooperation, problem-solving and innovative policy ideas,” she emphasises. Looking ahead, Dr. Saxton is excited about several upcoming projects and events. These include additional policy programming, leading delegations in the Middle East region, standing up an initiative to engage with the congressional and executive branches and pursuing opportunities for MEI’s Arts & Culture (A&C) Center.
AT THE HELM OF QUALITY HEALTHCARE
As the Group CEO of KIMSHEALTH, Dr. Sheriff M. Sahadulla has spearheaded numerous initiatives that have significantly expanded and enhanced the organisation’s operations. He spoke to Bahrain This Month about his inspiring journey.
Dr. Sheriff’s educational background laid a strong foundation for his career. He attended medical school at Tufts University in Boston and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. “Initially seeking a clinical position, I stumbled into healthcare management by chance. A hospital in Massachusetts was developing a Hospitalist Programme and hired me straight out of residency as the Associate Medical Director. The last 26 years prior to joining KIMSHEALTH was mainly spent in healthcare leadership positions based in Boston,” he explains.
His move to KIMSHEALTH was driven by his advocacy for physician leadership in healthcare. Since joining in 2015, he has served in various leadership roles, ultimately becoming the Group CEO for India and the Middle East.
Mentorship has played a crucial role in shaping Dr. Sheriff’s leadership style. He cites three influential figures: his father, Dr. Bill Stephan and his wife, Dr. Amena Malik. He describes his father as “the organisational leader I aspire to be” and credits Dr. Stephan with teaching him how to balance clinical work with leadership duties. His wife, a leader in healthcare quality who runs the accreditation programme at the National Health Regulatory Authority, is “the quality leader I aspire to be”.
Under Dr. Sheriff’s leadership, KIMSHEALTH has achieved remarkable growth. He identified five key focus areas: patient experience enhancement, technology and digital transformation, standardised clinical practice, quality excellence through international
accreditation, and a robust learning and development platform for employees. These strategies have propelled KIMSHEALTH to new heights since it opened its first medical institution in 2004, with all 17 medical facilities in the GCC region receiving accreditation from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI).
Dr. Sheriff emphasises the thoughtful integration of technology in healthcare, focusing on its potential to enhance physician efficiency, improve patient experience and boost operational productivity. He states: “I do not believe in using technology for the sake of using technology. Each new implementation is looked at as how will it add value in one of these categories”.
PIONEERS IN HEALTHCARE GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE
American Mission Hospital (AMH) has been revolutionising healthcare in Bahrain since it opened its doors in 1903. The hospital shares its plans to forge forward, highlighting essential collaborations, which will pave the way for a new era of healthcare in Bahrain.
“We are gearing up for the imminent era of large-scale AI applications in healthcare,” says American Mission Hospital Chief Medical Officer and Corporate CEO, Dr. George Cheriyan. The hospital’s leaders are working on a new strategic plan that brings together human capital and medical technology which can give Bahrain healthcare of global standards. This is just how the pioneers, who founded the hospital, brought modern healthcare to Bahrain and the Arabian Gulf region, 120 years ago.
“Our hospital’s history is, in fact, even longer,” Dr Cheriyan adds. “Samuel Zwemer, the American Christian missionary, had come to Bahrain in December 1892. He started his clinic within three months of his arrival. The little clinic he started in Manama Souq grew into a hospital that was built and opened in 1903 as the first modern healthcare facility in the entire Arabian Peninsula.”
In 2024, the American connections are growing even stronger. Its current engagement with Mayo Clinic for long-term collaboration will bring world-class healthcare to Bahrain. Mayo Clinic in Rochester, USA, is ranked No.1 among the World’s Best Hospitals 2024, by Newsweek-Statista’s Global Hospital Ratings. This latest annual ranking had used data from 2,400 hospitals across 30 countries.
“Thanks to the wise leadership of this nation, which aims to improve the overall healthcare delivery in the Kingdom of Bahrain, our yearlong discussions, trainings and orientations with Mayo Clinic are going on full steam. And, God willing, it will soon culminate in the signing
of an agreement that will make us one of Mayo’s network healthcare centres,” he says.
The senior leadership team from Bahrain had visited Rochester, Minnesota, USA, in October 2023 to discuss the way forward, and Mayo Clinic CEO, Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, visited Bahrain in April 2024 to speak at the C3 Healthcare and Business Summit.
“Recently, in June 2024, on the invitation of Dr Gianrico Farrugia, I had the privilege of attending his organisation’s Platform Med conference in Phoenix, Arizona, USA and got to understand the preparations Mayo is already making to embrace the future with its digital platforms and Generative AI models,” says Dr. Cheriyan.
In the future, AMH will not only offer healthcare but also conduct training and research that would benefit the Kingdom and the wider region through valuable collaborations.
“We are confident that our ongoing collaboration with RCSI Bahrain and our soon-to-come collaborations with Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA and the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, India, will soon give Bahrain the best healthcare possible, from experts; whether they are physically present in Bahrain or not”.
As a not-for-profit healthcare institution, AMH has no share-holders who seek any profits. The management of the hospital reports to a board of directors - which comprises Reformed Church in America (RCA) officials, former ambassadors, healthcare experts and management professionals from multinational companies, from USA and Bahrain.
The Board Members and Management teams of Mayo Clinic and AMH meet in Rochester, MN, USA, in October 2023.

currently employs around 1,250 people, including 90 Bahrainis, reflecting its role as a major employer in the region.
While the establishment has numerous commendable achievements, WestPoint Home Bahrain is not resting on its laurels. The company is actively exploring new markets in the Middle East and expanding its local presence. Partnerships with retailers like Lulu Hypermarkets are helping to increase the visibility of its ‘Made in Bahrain’ products.
Looking ahead, the company plans to further enhance its manufacturing capabilities in Bahrain by setting up towel manufacturing operations, a move that will not only boost sales but also create additional jobs for Bahraini citizens. This planned expansion aligns with the company’s strategy to leverage Bahrain’s business-friendly environment and stable infrastructure to drive future growth.
The success of WestPoint Home Bahrain can be further attributed to its strategic leadership. President and CEO of WestPoint Home, Steve Burns, has been instrumental in driving the company’s expansion and operational excellence. With a background in electrical engineering from Princeton University and extensive experience in manufacturing, organisational strategy and supply chain management, Mr. Burns has guided the company through significant milestones in business expansion, lean manufacturing, process optimisation and sustainability.

Celebrating 50 Years of Camaraderie
Moving to a new country can be a daunting experience, but for Susie Bower and Manal Akasha, it was an opportunity to find a new home and build lasting friendships. Both women, who moved to Bahrain two and a half years ago, have managed to integrate into the local community through their involvement with the American Women’s Association (AWA). On the heels of the associations Golden Jubilee, Farah Baig discovers how their stories highlight the importance of organisations like the AWA in fostering connections and supporting charitable initiatives.
AWA President, Ms. Bower, originally from the United States, and AWA Vice President Ms. Akasha, who hails from Sudan and Egypt, both relocated to Bahrain from different parts of the world. Bower moved from Italy after a prior stint in Japan, while Akasha came from Dubai, having previously lived in Qatar. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they quickly found common ground and friendship through their involvement in AWA.
“When we first arrived here, it was like a breath of fresh air,” Susie recalls. “Within two weeks of living here, I told my husband that this place feels like home. There’s just something about Bahrain that makes you feel welcome.” Manal echoes this sentiment, noting that joining AWA helped her feel at home almost immediately. “Since I moved to Bahrain, I joined AWA and it became like my second home,” she says. “Meeting nice people and making friends was effortless through AWA.”
“The moment I joined AWA, I felt 100 percent supported by the community,” Manal shares. “In times of happiness and sadness, the support and friendship from AWA members have been incredible.” This sense of community and support is what sets AWA apart from other organisations, according to Susie. “When you walk into a meeting, you can immediately feel how welcoming everyone is,” she says. “The diversity of cultures represented and the warmth of the members make AWA a unique and special association.”
A MILESTONE ACHIEVEMENT
The AWA, established 50 years ago, is celebrating its golden jubilee this September. Originally founded by three women, the organisation has grown into a vital part of the expatriate community in Bahrain. It supports around 30 local charities and provides a social network for women from all walks of life. “AWA started with the intention of giving back to the local community, and it has evolved to support social activities and build a sisterhood among women,” Susie explains. The upcoming golden jubilee celebration marks a significant milestone for AWA, reflecting on five decades of service and sisterhood. “Celebrating 50 years is a remarkable achievement,” Susie says with pride. “It shows the strength and resilience of our organisation and the dedication of our members over the years.” The jubilee will feature a series of events, including gala dinners, cultural exhibitions and charity fundraisers, aiming to highlight AWA’s contributions and celebrate its vibrant community.
GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY
One of the key aspects of AWA is its focus on charity and community service. The organisation – a diverse group of women of all ages and nationalities – raises funds locally and distributes them to various causes within Bahrain. “We support local charities by raising money and giving it back to the country,” says Manal. “Our main mission is to support each other, regardless of nationality or religion, and to give back to the community.” AWA’s charitable efforts include support for the Al Rashad Centre for Autism, Bahrain Mobility International in Isa Town and Shamsaha Women’s Centre, an organisation
that assists survivors of abuse.
For Susie and Manal, the charity work is a significant part of their involvement with AWA. The association’s commitment to charity extends beyond simple donations. It emphasises hands-on involvement, encouraging members to volunteer and engage directly with the beneficiaries they support. “We don’t just write cheques,” Manal stresses. “We visit the centres we support, spend time with the children and adults, and see firsthand the impact of our efforts.” This direct involvement not only enriches the lives of those they help but also deepens the members’ connection to the community.
In fact, in order to raise funds to support these charitable organisations, the AWA organises events such as the biennial Cherry Tree Trot which inspires involvement from the wider community of Bahrain. “We had an incredible turn out at this year’s event and saw participation from schools and over 30 centres,” says Manal. “It was a resounding success and raised over BD12,000.”
ACTIVITIES FOR ALL
One of the key factors that distinguishes AWA is its multitude of groups which cater to a diverse range of activities and interests. The craft group, for instance, meets every Tuesday and creates items that are sold to raise funds for charity. “AWA’s craft group is probably our biggest and most active internal group. In fact, they even meet during summer,” Susie notes. “What they create is sold at events like the AWA Snowflake Craft Fair to generate donations for local charities.”
The monthly ‘Women of Taste’ luncheon group is another popular activity, where members visit different restaurants and experience new cuisines. “It’s a newer group
but very popular,” Susie says. “We go to different restaurants and sometimes have cooking demonstrations.” Other activities include Scrabble, book clubs, and Bollywood dancing, providing a wide range of options for members to get involved and meet new people.
LOOKING FORWARD
For both Susie and Manal, their roles in AWA have been transformative and they found a sense of purpose and belonging through their leadership positions. “Being in a leadership role has allowed me to give back more effectively and inspire others to get involved,” Susie shares. Manal adds: “It’s about making a difference, not just for the community but also for ourselves. The friendships and connections we’ve made are invaluable.”
Their mutual journey with AWA illustrates the profound impact that community groups can have on expatriates and Bahrainis alike. Their experiences underscore the importance of creating supportive networks in new environments, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual care. As they look ahead, both women are committed to continuing their work with AWA, ensuring that it remains a pillar of support and charity in Bahrain.
“We want to leave a lasting legacy,” Susie says. “Our goal is to keep growing, reaching more people and making a positive impact in the community.” Manal agrees, noting that their work is far from done: “There’s always more to do, more people to help and more connections to be made. AWA has given us a platform to do just that, and we’re excited for what the future holds.”
Those wishing to join the AWA are welcome to do so and can reach out to the organisation through awabahrain org for more details.
