El pasado 12 de abril dio comienzo el III Circuito Nacional de Golf NH Resorts, que desde ese momento, ha ido pisando fuerte en las distintas pruebas disputadas hasta la fecha, demostrando estar a la altura del listón marcado por el éxito cosechado en sus dos ediciones anteriores.

El entrenador de la Selección Española de Balonmano, Valero Rivera, junto a Juan de Dios Román, presidente de la Federación Española de Balonmano, hicieron entrega al director general de NH Resorts, Jordi Caralt, de la medalla de oro del Campeonato del Mundo, conseguida por la Selección Española en una final épica en el Palau Sant Jordi de Barcelona.

The coach of the Spanish National Handball Team, Valero Rivera, along with Juan de Dios Roman, president of the Spanish Handball Federation, handed the gold medal of the Handball World Championship, achieved by the Spanish Team in an epic final at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona to Jordi Caralt, CEO of NH Resorts.

To celebrate these 10 years, the hotel arranged an unforgettable party outside the restaurant El Risco and the nearby Lanz Beach Club, attended by tour operators, journalists, personalities of the island and all the friends of Hesperia Lanzarote. They all enjoyed a stunning live performance inspired by the circus, with clowns, trapeze and breathtaking fire jugglers, as well as a unique concert with the incredible Lanzarote sunset as a backdrop to an unforgettable night.

Su vida la llena con la radio, su mujer Merche, sus tres hijos y sus nueve nietos. En la actualidad podemos escucharle en Radio Nacional todos los viernes, donde entrevista a personajes de lujo que están de plena actualidad. Pero Luis del Olmo es un viajero empedernido y no piensa dejar de serlo, porque, aunque ya conoce gran parte de los rincones del mundo, quiere seguir descubriendo lugares y sensaciones nuevas. ¿Cuándo viaja se preocupa especialmente de la elección del hotel? Se preocupa mi mujer, Merche, que es especialista en buscar hoteles guapos, bien situados y con buena cocina. Ella se encarga, pero usted tendrá su propio gusto… ¿Qué tipo de hoteles le gustan? Los hoteles que estén colgados de alguna cornisa con una buena vista al mar, o los que estén encerrados en los bosques y por su ventana sólo veas vegetación y el cielo azul. Y por supuesto, que tengan un servicio atento con el cliente. ¿Es imprescindible para usted que el hotel tenga campo de golf? No, sí lo tiene mejor, pero si no lo tiene busco el más cercano. En vacaciones o días de descanso es muy importante para mí el golf. ¿Más importante que tener cerca la playa? No, si tengo que elegir, me quedaría con la playa. Me quedaría con la arena maravillosa que tienen las playas de nuestro litoral. Aunque no soy de tumbarme al sol, con una buena sombrilla en un rincón de cualquiera de nuestros mares, soy feliz. Y en este sentido, NH Resorts es una delicia, las ubicaciones de sus hoteles de costa son únicas, hay algunos que son auténticos paraísos. Yo viajo mucho a La Toja, y el hotel Hesperia Isla de la Toja tiene todo lo que se le puede pedir a un hotel: el mar cerca, buena cocina, aguas termales, y un servicio atento y cercano.

When you travel, do you especially care about the election of the hotel? It’s my wife, Merche, who cares about the hotel. She is a specialist in the search of good looking hotels, well located and with a good cuisine. She takes care of it but you probably have your own preferences ... What kind of hotel do you like? I like those hotels hanging from a ledge with a good view over the sea, or those who are locked up in forests and vegetation and blue sky are the only things you can see from the window. And of course, I like those which have a friendly customer service. Is it essential for you that the hotel has a golf course? No, it is not. It is better if the hotel has a golf course, but if it does not have it I will look for the closest one. Golf is very important to me during holidays and resting days. Is it more important than being close to the beach? No. If I have to choose, I’d take the beach. I would choose the wonderful sandy beaches of our coastline. Although I am not fond of sunbathing, I’m happy with a good umbrella in the corner of any of our seas. And in this sense, NH Resorts is a marvel. The locations of the coastal hotels are unique; there are some that are authentic havens. I travel a lot to La Toja, and the Hesperia Isla de la Toja has everything you can ask a hotel near the sea, good food, hot springs, and a friendly and close customer service. As we can see, you know many Hotels of the NH Resorts chain, what is your opinion about them? I think they are a perfect combination because, apart from the friendliness of its employees, NH has always stood for good taste and has always met the needs of the most demanding customers. En el último hotel de NH que he estado, el Hotel Almenara, destacaría sus fantásticas habitaciones, los salones siempre tan animados y la cordialidad de sus gentes, que te acerca más a la familia. Y ese deber ser el propósito de un hotel, que el huésped se encuentre casi como en su casa. Algo que la cadena NH cumple a la perfección. ¿Duerme bien en los hoteles o tiene problemas para conciliar el sueño? No, yo duermo bien siempre. Sobre todo en los resorts de NH, que cuidan especialmente el colchón y las almohadas de las habitaciones, para que no eches de menos tu cama habitual… El fin de semana que pasó en el NH Almenara, jugó 36 hoyos de golf en un torneo, por primera vez en su vida. ¿Qué recuerdo tiene de ese día? Fue una experiencia única que inicialmente creía que no podría cumplir y, sin embargo, con los buenos asesores que tiene este hotel, me permitieron hacer aquella machada… ¡No me extraña que les hayan nominado como mejor destino de golf del mundo por la Feria Internacional de Turismo de Dubai! Es un entorno único, peculiar y, a la vez, complicado por su posición en gama alta de la hostelería. Colabora también como Chef Corporativo en la unidad de NH Resorts Europa. ¿Cómo valora el nivel gastronómico de los hoteles de NH Resorts? Inmejorable. Se están llevando a cabo desde hace años mejoras continuas en el servicio de A&B, de la mano del director general de A&B de NH Resorts, César Gómez, con el cual colaboro en las mejoras de los diferentes hoteles. ¿Pesa la responsabilidad de estar a la altura de una marca como NH Resorts? Indudablemente. Es una gran compañía a la cual me siento orgulloso de pertenecer y, sinceramente, no es peso lo que siento, simplemente me siento responsable de llevar a cabo un gran trabajo y saber que mi experiencia en diferentes empresas y países me han curtido para poder hacer frente a cualquier responsabilidad en mi labor como chef. Realizó la apertura del Hotel Donnafugata en Sicilia y los cambios de bufetes en todos los hoteles de la división. ¿Cómo valoraría su gestión al frente de las cocinas de NH Resorts? De una forma positiva. Me satisface ver que en diferentes visitas se mantienen los estándares que se impusieron en su momento y también el sentir el trabajo bien hecho, ver que se valora de una forma positiva por nuestros huéspedes en diferentes cuestionarios de calidad. Los hoteles ofrecen muchos servicios gastronómicos (restaurantes, banquetes, buffets, cafeterías, picnics, cócteles…). ¿Resulta difícil poder abarcar esta multitud de servicios al más alto nivel? Se trata de simple organización. Me siento muy orgulloso del gran equipo de A&B del Hotel Almenara, así como de los Chefs de los diferentes hoteles de la unidad de Resorts. Nunca olvidaré mis comienzos con Jordi Caralt, director de NH Resorts, y una frase que siempre nos decía: “hacer un equipo siempre es difícil, tener ganas de hacerlo nos garantiza el éxito a todos”.

Which is your main challenge as Executive Chef of a resort like Sotogrande Golf & Resort Hotels, which includes a golf course and several luxury resorts? The challenge is to continue with the positioning and the fight for the greatness that this resort deserves, both in service and cuisine. This is a unique, quirky and complicated environment, due to its position at the high-end of the hotel business. You also work as Corporate Chef of the NH Europe Resorts unit. How do you assess the gourmet level of the NH Resorts? Unbeatable! For years there have been continuous improvements in the food and beverage service, led by the general manager of food and beverage of NH Resorts, Cesar Gomez, with whom I cooperate on the improvements of the various hotels. Do you feel overwhelmed by the responsibility to keep up with a brand like NH Resorts? Undoubtedly. It’s a great company to which I am proud to belong and honestly, it is not weight I feel, I just feel responsible for carrying out a great job. And I know that my experience in different companies and countries have tanned me to be able to cope with the responsibility in my work as a chef.

You conducted the opening of the Hotel Donnafugata in Sicily as well as the change in all the buffets of the hotels division. How would you assess your tenure as head of the kitchens of NH Resorts? I would do in a positive way. In different visits to the hotels I’m always glad to see that the standards imposed at that time remain. I’m also glad to feel the well done job and see, through the different quality questionnaires, that this is positively appreciated by our guests. The hotels offer many food services (restaurants, banquets, buffets, cafes, picnics, cocktails ...). Is it difficult to cover this multitude of services at the highest level? It is simply organization. I am very proud of the great team of food and beverage at the Hotel Almenara, as well as the chefs from the different hotels of the Resorts unit. I will never forget my beginnings with Jordi Caralt, director of NH Resorts, and a sentence he always makes “building a team is always difficult, but is the desire to build a team the thing that guarantees the success for us all.” In recent years the importance of gastronomy, to which NH has always paid a special attention, has raised amazingly in hotels. Los ejes fundamentales en los cuales se basa la oferta gastronómica de NH Resorts son una gran variedad, temáticas originales, cartas frescas y fantásticos desayunos. ¿Cuál es la virtud más importante y el peor defecto en un plato? Sólo deseo que la gastronomía siga siendo lo que fue y se base en la sencillez y sabores tradicionales con presentaciones exquisitas. La vista juega un papel fundamental, después pasa a un segundo plano, ya que lo que se busca es el sabor y los sentidos de degustar una comida excelente. Un plato es un conjunto de percepciones y sensaciones: vista, olfato y gusto. ¿Qué supone el poder llevar a cabo su pasión, la cocina, en un entorno tan privilegiado como el que rodea al hotel Almenara Golf de Sotogrande? Este año 2013 han seleccionado al Hotel Almenara como Mejor Resort por la revista Conde Nast Traveller y uno de los valores mejores puntuados ha sido por su restauración. Es un honor en estos momentos ser el Chef de éste complejo tan importante y estratégico de la compañía. Recomiéndenos un plato y un buen vino para disfrutar en la increíble terraza del restaurante Gaia… Cómo no, os recomendaría degustar nuestro Gazpacho de Bogavante, Tartar de Atún Rojo o nuestro Solomillo de Retinto con refrito de ajos y vinagres viejos, acompañado de un vino como Mas la Plana de Bodegas Torres y acabar con nuestra Sopa de Chocolate Blanco con frutos del bosque y Helado de Leche Merengada con copa de Pedro Ximénez.

What does the possibility to live your passion, cooking, in an environment as privileged as the one that surrounds the hotel Almenara Golf in Sotogrande means for you? This year 2013 the Almenara Hotel has been selected as Best Resort by the Conde Nast Traveller magazine, and its restoration service has been one of its most important values. It’s an honor to be, right now, the Chef of this complex, so important and strategic for the company. Would you recommend us a dish and a good wine to enjoy in the amazing terrace of the Gaia restaurant? Of course. I would recommend you try our Lobster Gazpacho, Bluefin Tuna Tartare or the Retinto sirloin with fried garlic and aged vinegars, accompanied by a wine as Mas la Plana of Bodegas Torres and finish off with our White Chocolate Soup with berries and meringue ice cream and a glass of Pedro Ximenez.

When we think about wines with denomination of origin Valdepeñas, the first things that comes to your mind are its great reds, wines with body and unique taste, which have borne the name of Valdepeñas worldwide. But this land is also a producer of excellent white wines with a unique personality.

Los blancos Valdepeñas, tanto los jóvenes, como los robles y crianzas, se reconocen por su color amarillo pálido y pajizo, con tonalidades verdosas o ambarinas, ofreciendo en nariz aromas primarios característicos de cada variedad: afrutado de intensidad media en jóvenes, de intensidad media-alta para los de maceración carbónica, y más complejos para los fermentados en barrica. Dando lugar a un paso en boca suave y ligero, resultando afrutados y equilibrados en su estructura.

Valdepeñas white wines, both young and aged wines, are recognized by their pale and straw yellow, with green or amber hues, offering primary aromas characteristic of each variety: medium intensity and fruity in the young ones, medium-high intensity for those wines with carbonic maceration, and more complex for barrel fermented wines. All resulting in a soft-palate and light wines, fruity and balanced in their structure.

Apenas transcurridos cinco años desde su presentación en el Salón de Ginebra de 2008, la firma sueca Volvo sorprende con una puesta al día de uno de los todocaminos más atractivos que han proliferado en el mercado en los últimos años, el impactante XC60. First class sailors have competed in the exciting second edition of the NH Resort J80 monotypes Circuit. The circuit, which had its kick-off during the month of October 2012 in the waters of Sotogrande, has ended with the boat Herbalife as absolute winner. The circuit, organized by the integrated marine services company “Bevelle Nautica”, reinforces each year its importance in the racing calendar.

El monotipo Herbalife, del sevillano Juan Luis Páez, defendía el título conquistado en el I Circuito NH Resorts J80, frente a rivales muy complicados. Una decena de barcos y otras tantas tripulaciones salían el 20 de octubre al campo de regatas de la bahía de Sotogrande para comenzar la segunda edición del Circuito NH Resorts para monotipos J80, que se disputaría a lo largo de nueve meses en aguas de la localidad gaditana de San Roque. Fueron un total de catorce jornadas y más de cuarenta pruebas, para decidir al nuevo ganador de un circuito que contaba en sus filas con regatistas que lo habían demostrado casi todo en el panorama del crucero, y que se enrolaban en esta clase en continuo auge, para medirse a bordo de barcos idénticos en los que la táctica y la puesta a punto se convertían en un valor seguro. La relación de participantes de este II Circuito NH Resorts J80 la encabezaba el barco Herbalife, con matricula del Náutico Sevilla, que armaban el malagueño Pepequin Orbaneja y el sevillano Juan Luis Páez, con este último a la caña, avalado por su condición de defensor del título alcanzado en la anterior edición y la calidad de una tripulación que completaban el gaditano Mané Flethes y el malagueño Quique Gómez. Para ponérselo difícil, un elenco que incluía a los barcos locales Orobroy de Christopher Vujnovich, con el gaditano Dioni Martínez en la tripulación; Pas Team de Federico Caine y Jimmy Coelho, con el gaditano Nacho Alcina a los mandos; Hotel Almenara de John Bassadone; el NH Resorts de Jordi Caralt; o el Bevelle II de Borja Melgarejo, que ondeaba bandera del RCMT Punta Umbría, entre otros. Si bien las cosas no se le pusieron fáciles en las últimas entregas, el barco del Náutico Sevilla fue capaz de mantener la amplia renta acumulada en los inicios, salvando los progresivos envites de unos rivales que fueron creciéndose a medida que iban sucediéndose las jornadas de competición. Tres pruebas se encargaron de poner el punto y final a un circuito que ya tenía en el monotipo Herbalife de los armadores Pepequín Orbaneja y Juan Luis Páez, a un ganador matemático, merced a una amplia renta acumulada y la regularidad demostrada a lo largo de todo el invierno.

The Herbalife, the monotype of Juan Luis Páez from Seville, defended the title won in the First NH Resorts J80 circuit against very complicated rivals. A dozen boats, and as many crews, came out on October 20 to the race course in the Sotogrande Bay to begin the second edition of the NH Resort circuit for J80 monotypes, which would be disputed over nine months in waters of San Roque in Cadiz. There were a total of fourteen days and more than forty races, to decide the new winner of a circuit that has in its ranks with sailors who had demonstrated almost everything in the world of cruising. These sailors have embarked on this class of ever growing importance to compete against each other in identical boats, thus being tactics and the fine tuning of the boats the keys for success. The list of participants of the II Circuit J80 NH Resorts ship was headed by the Herbalife, enrolled in the Sevilla Yatch Club, with Pepequín Orbaneja from Malaga and Juan Luis Páez from Sevilla as shipowners, with the latter at the helm and supported by both its status as defender of the title achieved in the previous edition and the quality of a crew that was completed by Mane Flethes from Cadiz and Quique Gómez from Malaga. To make it harder, there was a group local boats that included, among others: the Orobroy of Christopher Vujnovich from Cadiz with Dioni Martinez in the crew; Pas Team of Federico Caine and Jimmy Coelho, with Nacho Alcina from Cadiz at the helm; Hotel Almenara of John Bassadone; NH Resorts of Jordi Caralt; and the Bevelle II of Borja Melgarejo, waving the flag of the RCMT Punta Umbria. Even if things were not easy in the latest races, the boat from the Sevilla yacht club managed to keep the wide lead accumulated at the beginning of the circuit and to solve the progressive stakes of its rivals that grew while the competition progressed.

El viento no quiso acudir a la despedida del II Circuito NH Resorts de J80. Flota y organización esperaron el tiempo reglamentario en el campo de regatas, situado en las inmediaciones del RCM Sotogrande, pero nada se pudo hacer para salvar la última jornada de un circuito que acabó con un total de 48 pruebas disputadas desde el pasado mes de octubre, bajo la impecable organización de la firma Bevelle Náutica. Pero no hacía falta el último asalto para conocer al ganador, ya que el monotipo Herbalife ya se sabía vencedor. El barco del Náutico Sevilla conseguía así renovar el título y mantenerse imbatido en su corta historia, con más de treinta victorias parciales y un sexto como peor puesto en su marcador.

Three races were responsible for putting an end to a circuit that already had a clear winner in the Herbalife, monotype with Pepequín Orbaneja and Juan Luis Páez as ship-owners, thanks to a wide lead accumulated and the regularity demonstrated throughout the winter.

En palabras de Juan Luis Páez, armador y patrón del monotipo Herbalife, “estamos muy satisfechos con la victoria. Pese a que el nivel de la flota fue subiendo a lo largo del año, logramos mantener una gran regularidad hasta el final, sin ceder ante el incremento de presión de los rivales. Creo que la clave ha radicado en la compenetración de la tripulación para la ejecución de las maniobras, sobre todo en los numerosos días de fuerte viento. Gracias al apoyo de nuestro patrocinador Herbalife, hemos formado un sólido equipo y esto está dando sus frutos. De igual forma, queremos dar mil gracias al organizador y a NH, y animarles a seguir trabajando para que este circuito siga creciendo”.

But the last race was not necessary to know the winner, because the monotype Herbalife was already the winner. The boat from the Sevilla yacht club renewed the title and remained unbeaten in its short history, with over thirty victories and a sixth place as the worse position obtained.

Un circuito que fue creciendo en cada entrega, tanto en número de participantes como en la calidad de los mismos Los principales oponentes a la hegemonía del Herbalife, los barcos Hotel Almenara de John Bassadone, y Pas Team de Caine Federico, con el gaditano Nacho Alcina a la caña, ambos con bandera del RCM Sotogrande, completaron el podio por este orden, después de hacerse acreedor de otros tantos triunfos parciales durante el circuito. Destacar, y mucho, el cuarto puesto del NH Resorts de Jordi Caralt, que protagonizó una de las remontadas más sonadas del circuito. El quinto lugar fue para el Puerto Sotogrande de Miguel Ángel Díaz, otro de los monotipos que nunca bajaron la guardia para estar siempre en los puestos de privilegio. Tras él, el Few Oi de Luis Triay; Fendemares II de Enrique de Bernardo; Cimco Partners de Christopher Vujnovich; el barco con tripulación femenina Puerto Sherry de Borja Melgarejo; y el Royal Club Gibraltar Yacht de Tony Segovia cerrando el ‘top ten’, por delante del Campofrío y el FRS Iberia de Moritz Bruns. Acababa así un circuito que fue creciendo en cada entrega, tanto en número de participantes como en la calidad de los mismos, con una flota que ya prepara la tercera edición del circuito NH Resorts J80, que comienza tras el verano.

The wind did not attend the farewell ceremony of the II NH Resorts J80 Circuit.
