The Branson Auction

April 20 & 21, 2012

Branson Convention Center Branson, Missouri

Welcome Kathy and I and everyone here at the Branson Auction are all looking forward to a really great weekend April 20/21. We’re looking forward because of what is now mostly behind us. While “The Tornado That Struck Branson” was not of the Joplinesque magnitude, it did turn things upside down for quite a while and there was a great deal of damage, including the Candlestick Inn! Boo Hoo.. Oh well, this too shall pass.

Our Auction Venue

Our Host Hotel Hilton Promenade. Due to the tornado damage on Feb. 29th, the Hilton Hotel connected to the Convention Center will be closed during the auction. The Hilton Promenade across the street at the Branson Landing will serve as the Host Hotel for our auction. For reservations call 417-336-5401 or you can book online at www.bransonauction.com.

Where we hold the Auction, i.e. the Convention Center, The Ball Room and the Atrium did receive slight damage, but it has all been repaired and replaced and the show will go on. The main Hilton Hotel, well, that’s a different story. 3,800 windows to replace, all the carpet on every floor, lots of furniture damaged including a deck chair that flew through a window at the Candlestick. Let’s go forward. Wait till you see the line up for this sale. It’s absolutely fantastic. Full Classics, in fact the largest selection we’ve ever had, Muscle, sports and exotics. Something foreveryone. And the market is right for buying. Please join Kathy and I and the rest of the gang as we celebrate our 32nd year of fun in Branson, the shows are open, there are more than 25,000 rooms available, the shopping is great and the cars look fantastic. Looking forward to seeing you here.

The Branson Convention Center at the Branson Landing is a stunning 220,000 square-foot facility that not only grants us an elegant new showcase for our seller’s automobiles, but accords our guests, bidders and consignors unparalleled waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment within walking distance at the new “Branson Landing,” overlooking Lake Taneycomo.

1921 Rolls Royce SILVER GHOST

Rolls-Royce enjoyed a successful and growing market in the U.S. in the years after World War, making it practical to consider opening an assembly plant. It chose Springfield, Massachusetts. Located in the Connecticut River valley, home to the armaments industry that had contributed so much to the defeat of the Kaiser and a growing, inventive machine tool industry, Springfield offered highly skilled craftsmen and a growing array of suppliers. Assembly started in 1921 using many components from England but soon the quality of Springfield-built Rolls-Royces brought more and more manufacturing in house in Springfield. This 1921 Silver Ghost 40/50hp Oxford Tourer is a very early example of the Springfield-built Rolls-Royces. It coachwork is known as the Oxford seven-passenger tourer, a catalog Rolls-Royce design built by its own Rolls-Royce Custom Coach Works. For many years it was part of the massive collection of Barney Pollard from whom it was acquired by the prior owner, a major Midwestern collector with his own professional shop for repairs and maintenance many years ago. In addition, there are letters in the file from a prior owner who sold the car to Mr. Pollard in 1948 and offered to have his chauffer drive the car from New York to Mr. Pollard in Michigan. Finished in Brewster Green with black fenders, a black leather interior, black top and matching full tonneau cover, it is right-hand drive with a 4-speed transmission in common with other early Springfield Rolls-Royces, had dual side mounted spares, a covered luggage trunk, drum headlights, matching drum cowl lights and blackwall tires on body color center lock wheel rims and hubs with stainless steel spokes. It has had only four owners from new, being carefully maintained and regularly exercised throughout its life and having its mechanical and cosmetic needs met regularly by professional. It recently has been comprehensively detailed and serviced and is a beautiful and historic example ready to shine on road tours or in Rolls-Royce Owner’s Club events 6

1939 Delahaye

135 M

Not exactly a “Barn Find” but nonetheless a very significant automobile that has been in hiding for the past 35 years. Serial number 49700 with body by Chapron provides the enthusiast a real opportunity to restore a very significant car. The Delahaye is one of the most desirable French cars of its time, featuring a 3,557 cc 6 cylinder engine which, with the single solex produces 95 horsepower. The 135 M (Modifie), is an upgraded version of the 135 first released in 1935. Combining luxurious appointments and race-winning engineering. Coachbuilders such as Figoni at Falaschi, Chapron, Franay, Letourner & Marchand, and Guillore all had their turn at building an image for the Delahaye name. Many of these cars were built specifically for Concours events which demanded elegance and uniqueness.

1947 Delage

x

The D6 70 pictured here is an example of an automobile largely unchanged from it’s pre-war predecessors and features an all aluminum body by Guillore and the venerable Inline 6 engine of just under 3 liters producing about 90 BHP. This particular car was in the same ownership since 1965 and was last shown at Pebble Beach in 1982. Still in excellent driving condition since it starts easily, shifts well and handles as it should. A beautiful historically significant automobile that deserves yet another freshening so that it may continue to delight all that see these incredible lines. www.BRANSONAUCTION.com • 800-335-3063

1940 Ford COUPE

This 1940 Ford Coupe was purchased by Walter Carlton from its original owner in the early 1950’s when he ran a foreign car repair shop in Sarasota Florida. He used the car and drag raced it on the Florida drag racing circuit in the 1950’s. He replaced the original Ford engine with 3.4 liter Jaguar engine that was available in his shop. Glenn Pray offered Walt a job at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg factory in Tulsa Oklahoma and Walt installed a trailer hitch and loaded all his belongings and drove the 40 Ford and Trailer to Oklahoma. He used it as his every day transportation until the 1970s. There is a picture of it in the Glenn Pray book, “The Man Who Brought Legends to Life” showing this 40 Ford towing one of the new Glenn Pray Cords. When Walt passed away Glenn Pray bought the car from his estate and completely restored it to its current condition with a beautiful full leather deluxe interior. Walt had installed a Columbia 2 speed rear end and LaSalle brakes when he installed the Jag engine. The car appears completely stock from front to back including interior and trunk, however people are amazed when the hood is lifted and a beautiful Jag engine appears. This is probably the only 40 ford with a Jaguar engine in the world. Most experts would say the Jag engine won’t fit but Walt being the engineer he was found a way, and it looks and works perfectly.

He purchased the car sometime in the 1960’s and started a complete restoration using new old stock parts from the Auburn Cord Duesenberg factory in Broken Arrow. The restoration was completed in 1983 and the car was driven a little over 60 miles and then put into storage until this year. The car is an absolute blast to drive and will be a superb car to add to a collection or to take out and relive its racing heritage! The Giulietta Spider comes equipped with just 1,290cc displacement and 4 speed manual transmission that might not rip the pavement out from under the car but showed relentless dominance on the most grueling and dangerous racetracks of its time.

1969 Ford

MUSTANG 428 COBRA JET

The star of the Mustang Corral in 1969 was the MachI with the 428 Cobra Jet. They were all under-rated, for insurance purposes, at 335 horsepower but they had a ton of torque and with the 3:91 gear it can still light ‘em up. This particular Mach I has been in Shoji’s stable for quite a while and locally, I don’t think anyone knew it was the “Fiddler” hot roddin’ around town. He’s had fun with it and decided that it’s time to pass it on. Of course it received the same perfect care and service as all of his cars.

1966 Ford

2005 Lotus ELISE One of the more surprising cars in Shoji’s collection is this 2005 Lotus Elise. My first impression was, how can “He” ever fit in there? But fit he does ( and so do I!) so if you’re 6’3” or taller, you too qualify. You had to be on a waiting list when they first came out and when you compare it’s performance which is superior to a Porsche Boxter S it’s easy to understand why. AT 190 horsepower but weighing less than a ton all that performance is understandable, but when you consider all the luxury and sophistication in a package the size of a Miata it is a surprise. Extremely low mileage on one of Shoji’s really fun rides.

Gear Heads

My friend Shoji Tabuchi continues to have one of if not the most successful show in Branson, Missouri and he and his wife Dorothy and daughter Christina have entertained millions for over two decades. When he’s not on stage burning up a “fiddle” my buddy has another passion. Cars. That tall Japanese fellow is a certified, card carrying, monster GEAR HEAD !! He doesn’t care what country it came from, if it looks right, sounds good and if he can get in it, he likes it and will eventually own it. Years ago when he built his private garage I told him it should be much bigger. He didn’t listen. So every few years he has a habit of turning over some of that marvelous inventory. This is one of those years. We tried to include him in all the photos and you should be able to recognize that rather tall fellow with hair darker than mine. Here is your opportunity to own a true Star Car that has been cared for better than those bling bling jackets he wears on stage. Good Luck. 36

It runs like new and is a blast to drive, turning heads wherever it goes. The MINI traces its’ history back to 1957 when it was developed by the British Motor Corporation as an answer to the fuel crisis of the day.
