The Branson Auction

October 18 & 19, 2013 Branson Convention Center Branson, Missouri

Welcome

back to Branson!

We’ve had a lot of fun putting this Fall Auction together and we truly hope you’ll have as much fun playing cars with us in this the 34th year of sales in Branson and the 25th year of ownership by Kathy and myself. We still enjoy the ride. It was a personal milestone for me when I hit “70” in September but also when I renewed my competition license with SCCA and the Vintage Motorsports Council. Vintage racing is about as much fun as an old man can have these days and it sure keeps me smiling.

The collector car economy seems to be perking up as well, with another record year of high priced sales in Florida and Monterey, but here in the Midwest the feeling seems to be, “I’m gonna sell this one and get something else”. It’s obviously time for a change and I think this time everyone agrees. Our spring sale was a forecast of great things to come and the enthusiasm we’re hearing over the phone is fantastic. Please join us in our fantastic little town of Branson, Missouri where we now have Southwest Airlines Daily Non-Stop flights from Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Houston and Orlando. Call us and we’ll pick you up from our new airport.

Jim &Kathy Cox

P.S. – 70 is the new 50!

1914 Peugeot 145 S Touring

This car, reputed to be the Peugeot 1914 Paris Salon show car, was restored by the highly respected Alan Taylor of Escondido, California and has been shown many times on at least two continents. This is 1 of only 325 Model 145 S Peugeots built and is believed, by Marque experts to be the sole remaining example of the 145 S. As was common of that era, the 1914 date reflects the time of delivery to its first owner rather than its date of construction. The patent stamped on the chassis indicates that the car is a 1913. This is all legal and correct and is very common in cars of this era. The colors of Aubergine and Bordeaux are believed to be the original colors. The 145 S was a big and powerful car in its day and proved that as the winner of the 1912 and the 1913 Grand Prix races. Accompanying the car is a large folder containing history, appraisals (over $500,000), historical documentation from the Peugeot Factory, copies of the original owner’s manual, driving instructions and restoration photographs showing its completion in 1996. The electric starter makes it a great car to drive and the large engine makes it particularly responsive to drive. It is an absolutely great car for tours and shows only slight imperfections from being used and loved. We sincerely hope that the new owner will seize the opportunity to enjoy it and love it as the current owner has.

1917 Abbott-Detroit 6-44

Founded in 1909 in Detroit, the Abbott Motor Car Company and its successors were typical early manufacturers assembling purchased components like Continental engines in proprietary frames and bodies. In Abbott’s case the formula proved to be successful, achieving some success in production car competition and producing just over 1,800 cars in 1912 while sustaining a more normal rate of 4-5 cars per working day. This 1917 Abbott-Detroit 6-44 Four-Passenger Roadster was part of a long term collection for many years, having been discovered and restored in the mid-Sixties. The 224 cubic inch six-cylinder engine is by Continental, driving through a 3-speed transmission. The body style, called a Four-Passenger Roadster by Abbott-Detroit, is unusual but effective, being both sporting and having room for a growing family. Equipment includes an Abbott-Detroit branded MotoMeter, nickel rim headlights, an opening windshield and a single spare mounted behind a small bustle-style trunk which contains the jack and crank (backup to the standard electric starting.) Although it appears to be modest-sized in its photographs it is in fact a large, comfortable, powerful automobile. The restoration has held up remarkably well and, although toured, is in very presentable condition. It also comes with a quantity of Abbott-Detroit and Consolidated Car Corporation documentation including stock certificates and period correspondence which seems to be related to the company’s financing for the move from Detroit to Cleveland. There is also a newspaper article about its discovery and restoration, an original photo of some of the Cleveland staff and an original stock prospectus from those preSEC years. It is a handsome package that captures some of the feel and appeal of the American auto industry in the second decade of the twentieth century. 2

1931 Studebaker President

1931 Studebaker President Rumbleseat Cabriolet In the late 20’s Studebaker suffered from the effects of the Depression Era economy. In an effort to bounce back from that, they created the “President”. The Studebaker President was markedly larger than preceding Studebakers and most other competitive cars on the market. The physical size of the car was its best and strongest selling point. It is also one of the features that makes it a very desirable car to own today. This car is big and comfortable to drive. Listen to the exhaust note. The Studebaker President had a large straight-8 engine that made it quite powerful. It runs good and it sounds good. Start with a perfectly restored car, the Cabriolet gives it roll-up side windows, the rumbleseat gives you room for four, and the accessory trunk on the back gives you room for a picnic lunch. Dual horns, dual windshield wipers and dual side-mount spare tires complete the package.

1929 Auburn Model 8-90 Cabriolet

In the 20’s the Auburn Automobile Company was in desperate financial trouble. They had 800 cars built that they could not sell and they were facing receivership. One of the Auburn board members named Wrigley, had a chewing gum company in Chicago where he met a young car salesman. He introduced that young car salesman to the Board of the Auburn Automobile company and they hired him, giving him stock options, so that he, too, would benefit if he managed to turn the Auburn Automobile Company around. That young car salesman was the now-famous Erret Loban Cord. Cord immediately took the 800 cars that they were having trouble selling, put them in body shops all around Auburn, Indiana and painted them “pretty colors”. The brighter, flashy colors on the cars enabled them to be sold and, thus, saved the Auburn Automobile Company. The Cabriolet is one of the rarest models of the 8-90, and this one appears to have all of the accessories – dual running lights, dual cowl lights and the accessory trunk rack. It also has dual side-mount spare tires and a comfortable rumbleseat. A wonderful caramel leather interior makes this one of the showiest Auburns of all time. This is a car that would be welcome on the field at any of the finest Concours.

1936 Auburn 852 Convertible Phaeton

The Auburn 4-door convertible, also known as the Phaeton, is one of the rarest production cars in 1936. Lycoming built the strong straight-8 engine, and the dual ratio rear-end made it fast. The convertible top made it sporty and the rear 2-doors in the back seat made it great for taking the family along. Every Auburn was driven by a race car driver, probably the immortal Ab Jenkins, prior to delivery. The cream colored exterior and the warm chocolate interior make it a delightful and relaxing car to drive. Even today, this car is very capable of maintaining freeway speeds and can be driven and enjoyed by you and the entire family. The dual side mounts are an extremely rare option that adds greatly to the rarity of this proud and unique automobile. Although this car has been loved and frequently enjoyed by the family that currently owns it, garage space is inspiring its sale.

1936 Panhard Panoramique

Panhard et Levassor is one of the founding names in the history of the automobile, tracing its origins to Emile Levassor’s 1891 prototype with an engine licensed from Gottlieb Daimler. The layout of the modern rear wheel drive automobile was conceived by Panhard et Levassor. In the mid-Twenties Panhard’s chief engineer, Louis Bionier, augmented his designs for speed record cars with advanced concepts of safety and visibility culminating the dramatic Panoramique in 1933 of which this 1936 X73 is a premier example. Righthand drive, as all ‘proper’ French automobiles were during this period, it is a simply magnificent expression of the quality, refined design and distinction that characterized the automobiles of Panhard. Under the hood the Knight-patent sleeve valve engine has dual carburetors and there is a jack, wheel nut hammer and other road equipment. The coachwork abounds in choice details including back-lighted number plate and French ‘F’ panel on the rear fenders both with integrated turn signals and brake lights and an intricate fuel filler cap securing mechanism. The body is straight and sound and its older repaint is quite average. The interior is sound, as is the chrome trim. The interior and woodgrained trim is good and the chassis and engine don’t look like they’ve ever been apart. Its details, from the door handles to the dashboard and steering wheel, are sublime. There are few examples of Thirties’ Machine Age design so artistically presented with such craftsmanship, style, and imagination. 6

1931 Chrysler 6CM The rarest and most desirable and collectible body-style in all of classic cars is the rumbleseat roadster. This car, in addition, has the very desirable dual side-mount spare tires, and is refinished in a very attractive shade of green. The convertible top is new, having been replaced approximately four months ago. The car has been driven frequently for the last couple of years and enjoyed greatly. This is a perfect car for Rally’s, tours and a variety of other adventures.

1937 Cord 812 Beverly An unrestored ‘37 Cord Beverly finished in Cigarette Cream with Burgundy interior with 47,900 original miles. New period correct interior, unrestored car but repainted in 1998 and the engine overhauled in 1990. This is a Driver, a well sorted out car. Original Lycoming V8, front wheel drive. Runs, drives and shifts great.

1938 Dodge Deluxe Suburban This rare Dodge Suburban Woody is in excellent condition. Wood body by Westchester. One of 375 produced. 115” wheelbase-8 passenger (3 seater) L Head six cylinder motor, 217 Cu. In. Original wood and drivetrain, wide whites, radio and comes with books and records. Clark Gable was the spokesman for Dodge in 1938 and drove a similar Woody Wagon around Hollywood!

1947 Ford Super Deluxe The demise of Ford’s largely hand built wood-bodied station wagons was imminent in the years after World War II but there was still a short reprieve while artisanal methods and individual craftsmanship persisted to meet the nearly insatiable demand for new cars after the war. Based on Ford’s late generation of prewar cars, these beautiful wagons were built for only three years, 194648. This example, one of just 16,104 built in 1947, in blue with brown leather upholstery has been restored to highly presentable standards as an excellent weekend driver. It has three-row seating, whitewall tires, hubcaps, trim rings and an exposed spare mounted on the tailgate. The paint, chrome, wood and interior all are very good. The power and distinctive exhaust note of Henry’s 239 cubic inch, 100 horsepower, flathead V-8 is an intrinsic element of its charm so the modern radio is largely redundant. This is a very pretty car in great running and driving condition ready to drive and enjoy . 8

1941 Cadillac Fleetwood Model 60

1947 Lincoln Continental

1941 was the last year of Harley Earl and Bill Mitchell’s original Sixty Special design. Many consider the 1941 to the most beautiful of this series and for the first time, Cadillac had its own front end design--the “tombstone” grille with a high center section flanked by lower side sections--that would identify Cadillacs for years to come. The new “face” blended well with the original body, and the rear fenders now held full skirts. For 1941, the wheelbase was reduced by 1 inch down to 126 in (3,200. Sixty Specials showed a $105 price increase (for the first time) to $2,195. Power was still supplied by the same 346 cu in (5.67 L) Cadillac engine as before, but was now rated at 150 hp. This particular example has been in the collection of a well known collector restorer and was recently given new paint, interior and chrome as well as a thorough tune. It has recently been road tested and reported to be ready for show or touring.

A rare, all original 1947 Continental, powered by a V-12 engine with 3 speed manual transmission and power windows. Paint, interior and chrome are all in great condition. It runs and drives great and you’re guaranteed to be the only one at Cruise Night with one like this!

When the war ended in 1946, limited automobile weddings. A bride’s favorite carriage to production began again. Most 1946 models were virtually her reception. Powered by a 239 ci Ford identical to the 1942 models because the old sheet metal dies V8, the motor was slightly modified with polished aluminum were pressed back into service. Because of those two events in history, it is rare to find a 1942 and even rarer to find a 1946 head, multi-carburetion and headers; it probably makes about automobile. The purchase price, new, of this 1946 Mercury 115 horsepower. Original pale yellow paint was redone in was a whopping $1,711. And, in fact, there were only 6,044 a more complimentary paint with a correctly cut and sewn produced. This vehicle has a Mercury flat-head V-8 engine, interior and a brown Hartzell top. A fun, near original car. hydraulic brakes, leather upholstery and is a wonderful cruiser, traveler, rally car or just a family ice cream getter. And what better color than red with tan interior? 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk Packard Caribbean V8 with 3-speed overdrive. A nut and bolt rotisserie restoration was completed in 2001 to an original car, with special attention to under hood detailing. The “Racing Green/White” colors differ from the “yellow/white” original. The family worked for Studebaker Los Angeles in 1956, and this car is a duplicate to the one his cousin, “Jimmie Cox” campaigned, quite successfully, for the factory at various southern California drag strips in late 1955 through June of 1956. This model is the only Studebaker ever equipped with a Packard engine; only 3500 were manufactured, and only in 1956.

1955 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible 287 cu. in., V8, 200 horsepower, 4-speed auto, power steering, power brakes, factory air conditioning, 6-way manual seat, non-original continental kit, power antenna, plus others. The car was stolen from its home in Nebraska in the mid-60’s, and when located, wound up in a salvage yard near Omaha. A Pontiac enthusiast recognized the car’s potential, purchased the car, and obtained a salvage title, all that was available. Sold to the Craig’s in 1993 and became a project. From 2005 until 2008 the car was treated to a nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. Rather than the original 5566 paint code, the car was brought back in Persian Maroon Metallic, a correct, beautiful factory color, with correct beige and maroon interior and beige Hartz cloth top. A breathtaking restoration of a very rare car. BRANSONAUCTION.com • 800-335-3063

1968 Dodge Charger 440

The entire B-body lineup for 1968 was redesigned and the Charger was further differentiated from the Dodge Coronet models. Designer Richard Sias developed a doublediamond coke bottle profile with curves around the front fenders and rear quarter panels. Front and rear end sheet metal was designed by Harvey J. Winn. The rear end featured a “kick up” spoiler appearance, inspired by Group 7 racing vehicles. The Charger retained its full-width hidden headlight grille, but the fully rotating electric headlights had been replaced by a simple vacuum operated cover. Featured in movies such as Bullitt as Steve McQueen’s chase car antagonist and the real star of TV sitcom “Dukes of Hazard” the new design Chargers acquired a large and devoted following. This particular car has had a gentle life despite the 440 / 4 barrel under the hood and has been the subject of but one re-paint from new. BRANSONAUCTION.com • 800-335-3063

Only 61 were Roadsters – this 26,000 mile example is car #115 of the first year. The rarity of the car was probably in the B2K option cost, nearly $20,000. For that you got a horsepower boost from 200 to 345, a real racing engine capable of near 13 second quarter mile’s and a top speed of over 170 mph and 21 mpg with the air conditioner on. Neat trick! 1955 MGTF-1500 Roadster

The MG TF was powered at its introduction by the same 1250cc engine that had driven the TD. However, in 1954 the engine was enlarged to 1466cc’s which raised the horsepower to 63. This boost in horsepower makes the TF-1500 approximately 5 seconds quicker in the 0-60 times. The TD was a good car, the TF was a great car and the TF-1500 is a better car. The TF has dual SU carburetors, 4-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs and 4-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. This is the quintessential English sports car. The fact that it is lefthand drive makes it work for American drivers. The British racing green and the tan leather interior make a wonderful combination and the chrome wire wheels set off the exterior bright work.

1978 Ferrari 308 GTS
