The Branson Auction Celebrating Three Decades of Service to the Collector
SEPTEMBER 10 & 11, 2010 Hilton-Branson Convention Center Branson, Missouri
Welcome,
What a ride! Those 3 dapper gentlemen at the bottom of the page are L to R, Mark Trimble, myself and Neil Klinefelter. The picture was taken in 1989, Mark had my dollar in his pocket and phase two of the Branson Auction was about to take off. We were having fun then, we’re still having fun, so we’ll keep doing it. That little lady with me in the Bugeye Sprite is the one who made the difference for the past 20 years. Kathy is a tireless dynamo and more organized than a public library. Good friend too. (Did you hear what Summerwinds gave to Autisim for the Sprite?) So, what do I do anyway? Well, I get to travel all over the country, meet great car people everywhere and tell them about all the fun we’re having in Branson. Great job! Plus, I really only work 4 days a year.
Our Auction Venue The Hilton-Branson Convention Center at the Branson Landing is a stunning 220,000 square-foot facility that not only grants us an elegant new showcase for our seller’s automobiles, but accords our guests, bidders and consignors unparalleled waterfront shopping, dining and entertainment within walking distance at the new “Branson Landing,” overlooking Lake Taneycomo. The new Hilton Hotel at the Convention Center is also our Host Hotel. For Reservations, call 800-445-8667 or book online at bransonauction.com and click on the Hilton Hotel link.
The Branson Auction Celebrates 30 years of Service to the Collector with this fall sale in 2010. The venue has improved greatly, the cars keep getting more and more significant, but the people remain the same. We’re still just a bunch of guys who like to play with cars. So, if you haven’t been to Branson, join us this year. And if you’re one of our regulars, welcome back. We always look forward to seeing all our old friends and meeting someone new.

1928Phaeton Packard
This was the year that the Packard family crest became the official Packard emblem in remembrance of the passing of James Ward Packard. Full Bejur chassis lubrication and incorporation of hypoid gears marked the engineering achievements and 1928 was also the last year for the Packard 6 cylinder engine until 1937. It was greatly improved, very reliable and combined with the 533 chassis created a perfect platform for the phaeton body work you see here. With dual side mount spares, large drum headlights, full weather gear and copious amounts of chrome this beautiful two tone red Packard is the perfect choice for show or tour.

1936 Horch 853 Cabriolet
August Horch obtained an engineering degree in 1890 and went to work for Gotlieb Daimler and Carl Benz as an engineer and helped forge the early direction of Mercedes. Working in the company for only three years , he gained the knowledge he desired and then set up his own company, August Horch & Cie. in 1899. The first car manufactured by August Horch had a friction clutch and shaft driven rear wheels – technology that no other car incorporated. In 1903 Horch also launched the first four cylinder car and then in 1907 a six-cylinder . Horch cars were considered technologically far superior to even Benz and Mercedes. He left the original company and started another . However a legal dispute did not allow him to use his own name for the company since Horch was still a registered trademark for the previous company. So, in 1910 Audi was born Audi being the Latin translation of Horch (“listen” in German). A total of 619 Horch 853 Cabriolets were produced between 1935 and 1937. With a 301 cubic inch straight eight engine producing 105 horsepower, the 5,700 pound car produced a stately top speed of 81 miles per hour. “Stately” is significant. The chassis is a glorious overstatement of Teutonic engineering, the body very reminiscent of Mercedes 500 and 540 designs, the fit, finish, and attention to 2

every detail is magnificent. The example you see here, Chassis number 853339, with engine number 850715 made it’s way to the United States in the early 50’s, initially as a military appropriation. Later, it found it’s way to an automotive museum in St. Louis, Missouri and then another museum in Rapid City, South Dakota which failed and created the sale of it’s inventory. The eventual owner, a South Dakota businessman and entrepreneur with a passion for automobiles and machinery was a pioneer in the world of automobile collectors. Memories agree it’s last drive took place in the mid 70’s when it participated in the Black Hills Auto show, was then driven home and parked in the garage below the main house where it remained until a few weeks ago. It is presented as it was found. w w w. B R A N S O N AU C T I O N. c o m • 8 0 0 - 3 3 5 - 3 0 6 3

1937 Cord 812 Supercharged Phaeton
Errett Lobban Cord believed in the American Dream. In July of 1935, with the Chicago Cubs battling for a National League pennant they would eventually win and the nation in a general upswing, he believed he had found his window of opportunity. He embarked on a crash program to build, not just a show car, but also an unprecedented Gordon Buehrig design of a remarkable new automobile featuring the Lycoming engine designed by Forest Baster, hidden headlights, the stunning “coffin nose” grill-less front end, front drive and a unique Bendix “electric hand” pre-selector transmission mounted ahead of the engine. 100 salable examples of the new Cord would be produced and he decided that the November 1935 New York Auto Show was the right time and right place to show the automotive press how his Indiana company was one of the most advanced engineering and design manufacturers in the world. As he expected, the Cord 810’s reception at the New York Auto Show was overwhelming, but in the end, that reaction might have hurt the car more than helped it. At a base price of just $1,995, the public quickly snapped up the hundred examples that E.L. Cord promised and overwhelmed his production capacity. In 1937 Cord announced the slightly revised 812 model. The most significant change was the addition of an optional supercharger that took horsepower up to 170 and top speed to 110 miles per hour. It was a car that would run all day at 70 mph, and get 15 miles per gallon doing so, but the American economy had weakened yet again, and there were painfully few buyers capable of the purchase. The 810 was introduced with four models: Westchester and Beverly sedans and two-seat Cabriolet and four-passenger Phaeton convertibles. The 1937 812 Supercharged Phaeton being offered was one of 1,146 such automobiles produced beginning in November, 1936. Remarkable styling, timeless, iconic design with magnificent history. The quintessential collector’s car. 4

1939 Cadillac Model 61 Convertible Coupe Cadillac celebrated 100 years of manufacturing in 2003 and has consistently provided luxury transportation since the beginning . This Model 61 Convertible Coupe personifies Harley Earl’s design trends for the post depression era and the engineering advances include synchromesh transmissions, hydraulic brakes and the beautiful sound of a 346 cubic inch flathead V8 producing 130 HP. An older restoration that shows extremely well. Very stately indeed.

1936 Buick Roadmaster
1939 Plymouth P8 Convertible
This 1936 Buick Roadmaster Series 80 4 door convertible phaeton was built on the longest wheelbase Buick had to offer and the first appearance of the Roadmaster label. A very significant automobile with it’s 4 wheel hydraulic brakes, 8 cylinder overhead valve 130 HP engine and Harley Earl’s design leadership in design. Yet, an identical car played a very important part in history just prior to the second World War. Wallis Warfield Simpson made her escape to the continent and headlines world wide during the crisis of Edward the VIII abdicating the throne. The Prince of Wales proclaimed his love for and gave up the throne for Simpson, or was it the Buick?
P8 C.S. convertible sedan on extended wheelbase. One of only 387 produced. Inline 6, 201 cubic inch. Only Plymouth convertible produced in the Chrysler line in 1939. Very rare and believed to be one of five left. Purchased from the Herbie Livingston Estate in 1995 and stored since.

The Continental was Edsel Ford’s flagship model for the Ford Motor Company and proved to be such a timeless design that it would remain unchanged even through the postwar years. It’s impact on the automotive world can still be felt today; Edsel’s insistence on a rear mounted spare spawned the phrase “Continental Kit”. While many consider the original V-12 power plant to be legendary, the previous owner felt the car needed more power and had a 50’s Rocket 88 Oldsmobile V-8 installed. However, should the new owner desire the original V-12 and transmission, they are included with the purchase of the car.
1941 Lincoln Continental Convertible
1940 Buick Century Sedan
1940 LaSalle Convertible
1940 Buick’s were ahead of their time in the world of domestic automobile production, with features like 4 wheel coil sprung suspension and sealed beam headlamps it gave the public an idea of what to expect after World War II. This example retains an original Buick “Dynaflash” engine with “Tabulator” pistons producing 107 horsepower. Finished in a dark shade of blue over a tan cloth interior, it needs nothing but a new home.
1940 LaSalle Series 52 Convertible Coupe LaSalle – built by Cadillac. Created for the General Motors lineup in 1927 the LaSalle was to fill a void in the price gap competition between them and Packard. With Harley Earl now in charge of The Style and Color department, plus the quality of the Cadillac engineering one would think success was immanent. Not so, this 130 HP V-8 convertible coupe marks the end of the line to a noble experiment.

1947 Buick 8 Convertible
1947 Buick Series 70 Roadmaster Convertible. Postwar Buick Automobiles were very successful. Not only was there a pent up demand for cars but Buick had the foresight to introduce Dynaflow Transmissions, the Roadmaster trim package and the 320 cubic inch 8 cylinder producing 144 horsepower. This driver quality older restoration will not only bring back memories, it’ll help you relive them.
1950 Ford Convertible
1949 Dodge Wayfarer
It was the first new styling change for the Dodge lineup since the end of the war. And the most interesting offering from Dodge was the 130 HP Sportabout Roadster. This is a very rare and unique convertible with considerable amount of restoration work. Features include a gyromatic fluid drive 3-speed transmission, flat head 6 cylinder engine, radio, turn signals, wide white wall tires and spritely performance.
1951 Ford Convertible
1950 - 1951 Ford Convertibles. Let’s face it, the difference between these two cars is minimal. But what a fantastic opportunity if you’re a Ford fan. Henry Ford passed a way in 1947, and what you see here are the first designs from FOMOCO post war and post Henry. Gone were many of the obsolete engineering and design features he insisted on retaining, it wasn’t a clean sheet of paper design, but it was a giant breakthrough and sales proved the move to be timely. The 239 flathead V-8 had more speed equipment and accessories available than anything else on the market, so if you were a performance fan, this was the car to have. How many ‘49,50’ or ‘51 Ford Convertibles survive? Here’s two of the best. 8

1955 Buick Roadmaster
1956 Buick Roadmaster
The Roadmaster had it’s beginning in 1936 when Buick brought out their top of the line coupe, wagon and convertible. The line lasted until 1959 when it was replaced by the Electra. In the mid fifties performance was outstanding after horsepower was jumped up to the mid 230’s range and modifications to the dynaflow transmissions created 0 to 60 time in the mid 11’s with top speed over 110 mph. Big stuff for it’s day. And now you have your choice of color and year with these beauties coming from the same collection. Well restored and well taken care of in a climate controlled environment. Wouldn’t you really rather have a Buick?
1956 Pontiac Starchief

The comprehensive restoration included new paint, chrome, interior and mechanical rebuild. Finished in white and orange with matching interior. It is equipped with Strato Streak V-8, automatic transmission, power steering and white vinyl power top. Comes complete with an owners manual and Continental Kit.

Fully restored and cherished by it’s previous owner for many years, this example of one of the very first “muscle cars” is ready to thrill and amaze anyone. As the final years of Studebaker, now Studebaker-Packard were coming to a close, this outrageous design combined with state of the art engineering produces a magnificent statement for the company that started out making Conestoga wagons.

1974 Pantera GTS This 1974 GTS is a top quality downto-the bones restoration. It’s obvious the moment you see the car, in what is a truly concourse quality red. It has seven-inch Campagnolo alloys in front, ten inches in the rear for that almost evil stance Pantera is famous for. The interior features leather Recaros, and underhood is Ford’s 351 Cleveland, with a set of ‘71 quench heads on top for high-speed breathing. This car drives better than new, and that really means one thing - it’s fast! When it fires up in Branson, you’re going to know it, because unless your first child is born that day, you’re not likely to hear a sweeter sound. Panteras aren’t for the shy, and they’re made to be driven. If you want star power with the muscle to back it up, it’s your one-stop shop.
1980 Aston Martin Volante Convertible 30,000 miles The 1980 Aston Martin Volante (Convertible) that you see here is one of only 39 sold to the United States, from a total production of 203. The 326 cubic inch 4 cam fuel injected V-8 was designed by Tadek Marek and it actually made it’s debut in the Lola T70 LeMans race car. This basic engine design continued for over thirty years. With 350 horsepower the Lagonda V-8 propels the Volante to a top speed of 145 MPH. It’s brief appearance in the Bond film The Living Daylights, and with one time Bond Timothy Dalton aside, the overall design and luxury of the car surprises many. Purchased by a collector over twenty years ago it saw very little use outside it’s climate controlled environment until being recently purchased from his estate and properly re-commissioned for road service. All systems are working, from the air conditioning to the power top, even the clock keeps proper time.

1967 Jaguar XKE 2+2
In March of 1966, Jaguar introduced a 2+2 coupe with enough extra interior room for a pair of occasional seats in back. one journalist wrote “ it effectively turns the E-Type into a family grand tourer and will therefore extend Dad’s youth for at least another seven years.” In an attempt to make the overall profile look right, both roof and windshield were raised two inches. Some people actually thought this an improvement. Some also felt that the longer, heavier 2+2 rode and even handled better than the two-seaters, and that its wider turning circle was not much of a problem. The 4.2 liter 6 cylinder with the 4 speed transmission make the “big” xke quite the performance car and this second edition 1967 drives extremely well. It does however need a complete paint unless your satisfied with it being just an extremely competent driver.
1962 Ford Thunderbird
This nearly all original Thunderbird runs great and is a blast to drive. The Landau was based on the Hardtop model, but featured a more formal appearance due to its vinyl covered roof with simulated S-bars on the roof sides. This vehicle was very likely the model that started the vinyl roof craze. It has a 390 V-8 engine, swing-away steering wheel and cruise-o-matic drive.

One of the finest Mach 1’s on the road!
1970 Ford Mustang Mach I
Some say that there has never been a better looking Mustang fastback in the marque’s history. Ford splashed striking graphics on the Mach 1--color-keyed side stripes, matteblack hood striping, hood pins, sidescoops, chin and deck lid spoilers, sports slats to keep the sun out and the cool in, and twin-set headlamps. It was an ultra sharky facade few car buyers could resist. An excellent example presented here with a modified 351 with aluminium heads, automatic trans and the factory 9’ differential, and that beautiful sound through a 2 1/2 “ aluminized exhaust with flowmaster mufflers. w w w. Dark blue with a tan interior, this 3.8 liter Mercedes sports car features a removable hard top, automatic, power windows, steering, brakes and air that works. Well taken care of and recently serviced it is the iconic German hot rod.
1971 Mercedes Benz 280 SE 1971 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet conversion The last model of the W111 series of Mercedes was the 280 SE 3.5. It came equipped with the 3.5 liter V-8 engine with 200 horsepower at 5,800 rpm producing a top speed of 130 mph. Pretty impressive stuff for a 3,700 pound car. The suspension and brakes for these factory hot rods are incredible and the overall design one of the most pleasing of the era. Lack of availability has inspired many to convert their coupe to a cabriolet.
1971 Rolls Royce Corniche
32
The Corniche was the Rolls Royce coupe and convertible version of the Silver Shadow produced between 1971 and 1996. The exterior design was by John Polwhele Blatchley. The model was assembled and finished in London at Mulliner Park Ward as continuation of the 1965 Silver Shadow coupe and 1967 drophead, with the Corniche name applied in 1971. The car used the standard Rolls-Royce V8 engine. A 3-speed automatic transmission was standard. A four-wheel independent suspension with coil springs was augmented with a hydraulic self-levelling system (using the same Citroen system, but without pneumatic springs, and hydraulic components built under licence by Rolls-Royce), at first on all four, but later in the rear wheels only. Four wheel disc brakes were standard. This particular Corniche was the personal car for the owner of a large automotive audio firm and was therefore outfitted with an extensive audio system.

1957 Mercedes 190 SL 190 SL production run lasted from 1955 through 1963. It was a beautiful sibling to the prestigious and awe-inspiring gullwing door 300SL. The 300SL was initially priced at $7,460 while the 190SL was $3998. As a result the 190SL outsold the 300SL by nearly eight to one. In its best year 4,032 190SL’s were produced. Built with many components used on MercedesBenz production cars of the day, the 190SL was the German automaker’s first widely distributed sports car. More than 25,000 were built between 1955 and 1963. Design was strongly inspired by the heralded 300Sl, though its dynamics were slightly comprised by the car’s 120-horsepower, four-cylinder engine installed in a shortened 180 sedan floor pan. Under the hood was an 1897 cc four-cylinder OHC engine that was capable of producing around 120 horsepower that took 14.5 seconds to go from zero to sixty and had a top speed of nearly 110 mph. Drum brakes were placed on all four corners of the 14 foot, one inch car. Servo brakes were optional until 1956 at which point they became standard. This particularly beautiful 190SL has been in the same private collection for over 15 years and has received the constant care and service it deserves.

1986 Sterling London Taxi
1985 Zimmer Golden Spirit
The London Taxi is known for its practicality, reliability and inextricably linked to the mystique of the city it serves. In the mid-eighties a group of FX4 cabs were brought to the U.S. by a Michigan company. They were modified to move the steering to the left. Fitted with air conditioning, a built-in Sony TV set, a bar with crystal decanters and glasses, opening divider window. Compact, maneuverable and very distinctive, this luxury transportation that makes a statement.
Paul Zimmer didn’t like his Excalibur for driving around in Pompano Beach, Florida, he thought he could do better and from 1980 to 1988, he did! Having been in manufacturing all his business life he took the same diligence and attention to detail and applied it to a “neo-classic” design called the Golden Spirit. There were over 180 factory hand built examples rolling out the doors every year and many selling for in excess of $100,000. Based on new Ford Mustangs with the 5.0 liter/302 V8 Ford engine, with automatic transmission, Air conditioning, Recaro seats, cruise, tilt, chrome wires and almost 18’ long it makes an ultimate statement.
