About Us... The Bay Professional Photographer’s Association provides an opportunity for photographers to come together to exchange ideas and information, and to encourage each other to become better at their craft. The association allows photographers to improve their skills by presenting photographic programs and holding print competitions. The association also provides the benefit of networking with other photographers for business and social interaction. If you are a professional photographer in the Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Englewood and vicinity, you are invited to come and visit our group. We would love to have you as part of this organization. If you are interested in joining or attending a meeting as a guest, please contact: Membership Chair, Gigi O’Dea PHONE: (941)941.747.4150 EMAIL: gigiodea@yahoo.com

In order to run a good organization, we rely on volunteers. These positions are greatly appreciated by all. A lot of our members double up on committees. We would love to have your assistance on any of our committees. You will learn more about BPPA and get to know everyone even more! The President’s Message Hello Everyone! Prior to the Internet, people used the phonebook to find a professional photographer. At that time only professional photographers advertised. However, with the Internet, anyone can post a website. And if done properly, it will come up in a search. It does not cost anything to advertise your work online. With a website and social media, there are more photographers online than there ever was in the phonebook. So how do YOU differentiate yourself from the weekend photographer or as we say, soccer moms? Does the average person searching the Internet know the difference? Our profession does not require a license to qualify us as a professional. I wish it did. That way we would have a definitive separation. Without that, our only recourse is to educate the public on what qualifies us as professional photographers. Here are some: • We are registered as a business in our home state either as a Corporation, LLC, Partnership or Sole Proprietorship. • We collect and pay sales tax. • We pay annual local taxes. • In our community, we are recognized as a business. • Through our photography, we make a living and provide for our family. • We pay income tax from the money we earn from photography. • We belong to professional photography organizations. • We continually attend conventions, seminars and photography classes. • We are committed to the profession of photography; it is our sole profession.

And to further your qualifications, sell your knowledge and experience. If you are questioned on your pricing, this is the perfect opportunity to clarify why you charge what you do. Explain but never apologize. Tell them how many years of experience you have. Demonstrate how your style of photography defines you. Make sure they know you will be there for them not only in the present but in the future. If pricing is all they care about, you will probably lose them to a soccer mom. That is pretty much inevitable. They are looking at dollar signs not quality. But if you sell a prospective client on your work, you sell them for life. They will keep coming back to you and refer you to others. Soccer moms eventually get bored or burned out. But you will always be there because you are a professional photographer! I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting on August18th. Don’t forget to wear your name badge! Thank you, Donna Williams

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Jim Dohms

T

he Member Spotlight for August is Jim Dohms, of Dohms Creative Photography

LF: When did you start your business? - When the recession changed the landscape of the business I was in, I found myself without a job. There was no point in searching for a similar job because the medical imaging business I had worked in for the majority of my professional career was in economic free fall. I decided it was time to find a career in another field so I took a hard look at photography. For many years I had been working on photographic techniques and 10

image editing that I had learned through practice, at seminars, the internet, books and magazines. I researched the marketplace and found there were many established photographers in the area with much more education and many years of experience. I decided to look at areas of photography that I believed were underserved. I also wanted to print what I photographed. The digital revolution has not only made film obsolete in most cases and has removed print making from the film darkroom in favor of the “digital darkroom”. I use a Canon large format printer to print on various medias including fine art papers, canvas and now media designed for light box display.

The Showman- Taken at the American Wall of Death while in Daytona for Bike Week. Charlie Ransom speeds around the motordrome at 45 mph. I used available light with a shutter speed that conveys movement. background. I used Photoshop to correct hair out of place and clone the reflection of the hair light on the older gentleman’s head.

LF: What is your favorite subject? - My favorite subject to photograph is motorcycles followed by automobiles. There are many motorcycle categories. Racing, sport bikes, cafe, show bikes, the Harley-Davidson culture, and vintage to name a few. I have a real love for the vintage bikes and travel to locations where they can be found. Concour d’Elegance events are one of my favorites. The locations are beautiful and the condition of vintage motorcycles can range from un-restored to motorcycles that look like they did when they were new. I am a regular contributor to the BMW Riders Association “On the Level”

magazine and my work has been published in “American Iron Garage” and Motorcycle Rides and Culture magazine. I also have a collection of colorful images taken around Anna Maria Island in one of my website galleries. You can see them at www.MyFunkyFlorida.com. I also display and sell them at restaurants and gift shops in the Bradenton area. LF: Can you tell us how long it takes you to plan and execute a photo shoot? - The majority of my work is done outdoors. . I ask the client if they have a location in mind for the photo session and then plan the session 11

based on two major criteria, weather and time of day. Good quality available light, especially when a client is posing with their motorcycle is essential. I use additional off camera lighting when the available light alone is not enough. LF: What or Who inspires you?

graph the extensive collection there. I have just released “Classic American Motorcycles Wheels Through Time Museum”. The book has 98 images of the many motorcycles and two re-created shops within the museum. The book is available as an e-book for iPad, PC and MAC. A hardcopy coffee table version is also for sale.

- Like many who have gravitated to photography I was inspired by the work done of Ansel Adams. He was brilliant in his approach to photography. He understood his equipment, light, composition and how to make the most of the darkroom in creating the print. What it must have been like to be able to photograph Yosemite subjects on a moment’s notice in perfect light. Talk about a dream job.

LF: How long have you been in business, and where do you see your business in five years?

- I visited Wheels Through Time Museum in Maggie Valley in the fall of 2012. The museum has over 300 vintage American motorcycles on display, many with great backdrops . Since that first visit I have been back four more times to photo-

- I have been a member of BPPA for four years. I believe the association has much to offer. Good speakers discussing their specialties, Salon where the goal is learning how to create a better image and the opportunity to learn and share from other members.

- I am in my fourth year of business. Five years from now I hope to have many more satisfied clients with my work on their walls, be a frequent contributor to more motorcycle publications and create more books.

LF: How long have you been a member of BPPA LF: What is the most interesting photo shoot that and why would you recommend it to other professionals? you can share with our friends.

Benltey at Sunset- Was captured using a tripod. The sun was just about to set and I wanted to capture the sunset and palm trees in the car’s reflection.

LF: What is your most used lens and why. - The majority of my work is done using High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. My style when photographing motorcycles is to shoot at higher apertures so as to capture the entire motorcycle and background in focus. When doing so my lens of choice is the Canon 24-70 mm f/2.8 L. The sharpness I get from this lens is obvious when I create “20”x30” and larger prints.
