The President’s Message Hello Everyone! Our next speaker will present a program on Social Media. We all know what Social Media is on a personal basis. Almost every person I know has a Facebook account. Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn are also ways we can communicate with others. YouTube is a valuable learning source as well as a great way to convey your business. Through our computers, notebooks and phones we share images and videos and report about something that is important to us. And while Social Media is an important part of our personal life, it is even more important in business. Social Media should be an integral aspect of marketing your business. Here is just a sample of what your business page can do for you: •Post images of your recent work to attract interest •Advertise a special you are running •Provide advice or suggestions about photography •Share a video of your images and/or describe what you do •Notify your fans of new products and services
•YouTube reaches more adults aged 18 to 24 than any single cable TV. •Snapchat captures a younger audience. More than 6 out of 10 Snapchat users are in the 18 to 24 group. If that has not convinced you yet, the following are user statistics: •Facebook - 1.07 billion active monthly users •YouTube - 1 billion active monthly users •Google+ - 540 million active users •Twitter - 271 million active monthly users •Instagram - 200 million active monthly users •LinkedIn - 187 million active monthly users •Pinterest - 70 million registered users •Vine - 40 registered users These are statistics I found on the Internet. The dates vary and change daily. But the totals show us that in order to survive in today’s business world, you must be a part of the growing and ever changing world of Social Media. I look forward to seeing all of you at the next meeting on November 10th. Don’t forget to wear your name badge! Thank you, Donna Williams
Always keep your professional page neutral and above board. Never post or comment on sensitive issues such as religion or politics. And because you are in business, this rule applies to your personal pages as well. Social Media demographics: •There are more women than men on Facebook. The percentage is about 10%. •Instagram has edged out Facebook and Twitter in terms of prestige among young users. •LinkedIn is more popular than Twitter among adults. •Twitter has been edging more toward male users. 5
PROGRAM
Connie Summers, Program
kip Cohe”Social Media - Your Newest Marketing Tool Years ago all you needed to get the word out was a yellow pages ad. Years later you had to have a website. Today, if you really want to penetrate the market, ideally you need a website and a blog. In this special program, Skip is going to hit on a wide variety of aspects of blogging, website design and utilizing social media to your best advantage. This is about marketing your business and it starts with understanding the difference between your site and your blog. Your website is about what you sell, but done right, your blog is about your heart. Skip Cohen is President/Founder of Marketing Essentials International, a marketing consulting firm specializing in projects dedicated to education, primarily in photography along with social media support across a variety of different marketing/business platforms. He’s been actively involved in the photographic industry his entire career. In 2009 he founded Marketing Essentials International, a consulting educational and marketing company for photographers and vendors in the photographic industry. A year later, together with social media icon, Scott Bourne, he co-founded GoingPro a blog, podcast and later a book published by Random House for aspiring professional photographers. Prior to founding Marketing Essentials International he served as President/Chief Operating Officer of Rangefinder Publishing Inc. and had responsibility for Rangefinder Magazine, AfterCapture Magazine, the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International Association and the WPPI Convention and Trade Show. In January, 2013 he launched SkipCohenUniversity.com, now considered one of the fastest growing sites and blogs in professional photography breaking two million page views in its first year. The site is an educational resource center for aspiring and working professional photographers and its faculty includes over fifty of the industry’s finest artists. SCU podcasts have been selected as one of five photography features on BlogTalk Radio and Alltop.com lists the site as one of the top sites in photography. Skip regularly teaches workshops on marketing and business, focusing on website presentations and developing a representative social media and networking strategy. His programs focus primarily on extending reach, utilizing a wide variety of on and offline tools. As a result of getting to know the staff at the Sarasota Senior Friendship Centers, during his mother’s battle with Alzheimer’s, he now moderates a podcast, twice a month, with various staff members of the Center supporting caregivers. He’s also heading up their social media program with their new blog, BeAwareBetterCare.com and also handles their Twitter and Facebook support. 6

Being involved in charitable programs is nothing new for Skip. Two key industry fund raisers, created by Skip, included the sale of Ansel Adams’ Cadillac to the Coastal Hotel Group in 1991 and the sale of Ansel’s Hasselblad gear to shock jock, Don Imus in 1997, raising over $125,000 for charity. He has been a recipient of ADL’s Torch of Liberty Award, Foto Imagen Magazine’s Man of the Year Award and in 2001 he received PPA’s Legacy Award for his work in support of PPA Charities. His career in the photographic industry started at Polaroid in 1970 in the emulsion development group in R&D. During his 17½ years with Polaroid he held positions in research, personnel, customer service, both overseas and domestic, and was the US Marketing Manager for Polaroid’s photo-specialty dealers from 1984 –1987, when he left to take over Hasselblad USA as President/CEO. During his twelve years at Hasselblad he founded Hasselblad University, which later became Hasselblad’s worldwide educational arm. He expanded the Hasselblad newsletter to a quarterly magazine and helped to establish Hasselblad as a leader in marketing and education. In 1998 at the Swedish Embassy in Washington, Skip and his management team were recognized as the best Swedish company in America. He served as President/CEO of Hasselblad USA until 1999, at which time he helped launch an Internet photographic retail site as president of PhotoAlley.com until 2002, when the dot com economy collapsed. He currently sits on the Advisory Board for ViewBug.com and IAEPUB. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Cameras For Kids Foundation; served as PPA’s Industry Advisor and Board member, Vice President of the Photographic Manufacturer’s and Distributor’s Association, member of the board of directors of Photographers + Friends United Against AIDS, board member of the Center for Creative Photography, originally founded by Ansel Adams, the Photographic Hall of Fame and the P.H.O.T.O. Foundation created to help photographers who were victims of Hurricane Katrina. He has been a guest editor and consultant for Photo District News, educational consultant for PhotoPlus Expo programming and has contributed editorial to PDN magazine. Other clients have included PMA and PhotoShop World. He currently writes an ongoing feature for both Resource Magazine and Shutter Magazine. He has co-authored six books on photography, The Art of Wedding Photography, The Art of the Digital Wedding, The Art of People Photography, Don Blair’s Guide to Posing and Lighting Body Parts, Wedding Photography from the Heart and GoingPro released by Random House in October, 2011.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Connie Summers
T
he Member Spotlight for November is Connie Summers of Connie Summers Photography in Sarasota.
LF: Can you start with what sparked your photographic career? - At the age of 12 I started looking at Dog Fancy magazine. Robert Pearcy was the photographer credited with all the beautiful dog images published. This started me thinking how great it would be to have images published in this magazine. My father was also a wonderful landscape photographer and I loved his 10
images. Photography was just a hobby for him. He was an architect/contractor who attended Cornell University and the Art Institute of Chicago. LF: What was the first camera you every played with? - An Argus, all manual with one of those blue flash bulbs. It was my Dad’s camera. LF: When did you start your business? - Fifteen years ago I was “invited” to submit photos for publication. Hanging on to a goal for twenty years to have an

image published I was elated to receive this invitation! This was the beginning of my professional career. LF: What is your favorite subject? - Pete Carmichael always told us to “specialize”. Following his teachings, it was an easy choice for me. Animals are my favorite subject. Friends would tell me I was very patient with my animals, always owning more than one, and born with a love for animals this is a perfect marriage for me. I am very blessed to combine two loves of my life.
LF: Can you tell us how long it takes you to plan and execute a photo shoot? - Time and execution vary depending on the location or in studio. Planning is essential for execution of a productive and creative shoot. When my subjects are easy to shoot it could only take a matter of 30 minutes. Multiple dogs can take longer. I had a couple who wanted Christmas images of them and their 7 dogs and it took 20 minutes...they couldn’t believe I got the shot.
11
LF: What or Who inspires you? - My subjects inspire me. Great paintings inspire me. Great lighting inspires me. Great images inspire me. LF: What is the most interesting photo shoot that you can share with our friends? - Recently I had to shoot Arabian Horses for the cover and article in a local magazine. We went out to a local Arabian Breeder and I just loved seeing the beautiful horses! I did research before my encounter as every horse breed has certain characterists the breeders want to show. The breeder asked me to come back out for another shoot as she said I captured them so well and was impressed with my work. Flared nostrils, long necks and beauty tricks were all things I learned for this shoot.
This is a Black Standard Poodle Image, “Mr. Moonbeam” I photographed outside at St. Armand’s Circle.
LF: What is your most used lens and why? - Love, love my Canon 70-200mm. It is so sharp, I have varied distance available to me and lens stabilization allows me move around if needed. LF: Knowing what you know today, is there anything you wish you would have known when you first started? - Joining PPA and FPP. These programs are invaluable for business, education and becoming an all-around better photographer. To see more of her work please check out her website: http://www.conniesummers.com/
And if you are attending our next meeting, Connie will have her work on display This image was taken at Cat Depot. I photograph all their kittens and cats for newsletters and special events. It is my way of giving back to help find cats forever homes.

IN THE NEWS
by Maria Lyle
Please join me and congratulate one of our longtime members and wonderful contributor of many door prizes throughout the year. Be sure to stop by Johnson Photo Imaging and say hello.
15 years ago LeMoyne Johnson hung up his scalpel, closed his surgical practice, and on Oct 31, 1999 opened Johnson PhotoImaging. He felt it would be an appropriate day to begin his new adventure. Over the following years, the store gradually grew in the inventory, and the studio continued to enlarge with children being added to the mix (The Family Tree), of on location, beach sunset, and of course increasing the high school senior numbers. At one point we shot about a thousand seniors and over 4000 underclassmen. But this proved to be too much work to do with our small staff so we have scaled back to about 400 seniors and 2500 underclass. December 2012 began a new era when Michal Arbor (of Sarasota Camera Exchange) arrived as our new general manager. We rapidly increased our inventory. After several break-ins, we decided to remodel the front of the store and also double the retail floor space. This has given us room to expand into professional studio lighting, soft boxes, and other light sources. We also are rapidly expanding our video department with all the associated devices to help make for great video motion. The official birthday celebration began on Thursday morning (Oct 30)at 9:15 with a Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting for our Grand re-opening. On Friday, we brought out our traditional carrot birthday cake. This year for anyone (adult or child) in costume, we took a Halloween portrait of our guests for free. And instead of getting gifts, we had a grab box with lots of prizes for YOU. The prize list continues to grow reaching around $2500 at the time this is written. The top prize was a $500 digital camera. We also had a series of instructional lectures and workshops provided by our manufacturers. This includes Westcott, Tamron, Pocket Wizards, Bowens lighting, Sekonic, and Canon video and printing so far. Several others are in the works, but dates are not firm. And the finale will be in either Feb or March and for the first time presented by Nikon. Dates and speaker are not yet firm at this time. So I hope you come out to take a new look at JPI and help us celebrate the 15th birthday and beginning of our 16th year. None of it would be possible without you, our great customers. LeMoyne Johnson, president Johnson PhotoImaging, Inc
