The President’s Message f Hello Everyone! I want to take a moment to talk about photographing sessions on train tracks. Train track sessions are both dangerous and illegal. Quite frankly, it is not worth the risk. There are no train schedules for trains making it impossible to know when a train is coming. Recently 20/20 did a story about an accident that happened during the filming of Midnight Rider in Jessup, GA. The camera assistant was killed as everyone was running down the train trestle in their attempt to get away from an oncoming train going 57 mph. The movie was cancelled and the producer/director went to jail for setting up the shot on the train’s trestle putting his film crew in danger and causing the death of the camera assistant. He was specifically told by CSX Railway not to film. If you think you are safe because you never pose in an area with heavy train traffic or that you would see or hear a train long before you are in danger….you are wrong. The railroad typically builds tracks in a straight a line as possible between points A and B. However, every track has turns or bends that were designed to avoid an object or an area. Add the often dense growth of trees and bushes that line the track, the train crew’s line of sight is dramatically reduced. The danger is compounded by the fact that trains are large, heavy, fast-moving objects that cannot stop on a dime. The average freight train engine travels approximately 50 mph, weighs over 120 tons and requires more than a mile to come to a complete stop.

• An optical illusion makes it hard to determine the train’s distance from you and its speed. • The average train overhangs the track by at least three feet. • Railroad tracks, trestles, yards and rights-ofway are private property. Therefore it is illegal. And yet, here are some facts you should know. In addition to safety issues, both you and your client could be fined up to $10,000 or even face arrest. Tracks are policed. Modern locomotives are equipped with cameras making the chance of getting caught more real than ever. If caught, you may receive a warning. But sooner or later, you will have to pay the piper. And that is a big check to write. One last deterrent are “rail fans”—train lovers with cameras. Many participate in Protect the Line, a program that asks these individuals to keep a watchful eye out for anything that is unsafe around the tracks. Many of these rail fans have photographed professional photographers and their clients. Their images along with the license plate numbers are shared with authorities on a regular basis. Safety for you and clients should always be your first priority in any session. I look forward to seeing all at the next meeting. Thank you, Donna Williams

If these statistics alone don’t alter your quest for train track sessions, here are some additional reasons to avoid train tracks cited by the Federal Railroad Administration and Operation Lifesaver, a national nonprofit organization devoted to railroad safety education: 5

Salon News

by Jennifer Gerardi

Hello, I was pleased with the overall turnout for last months’ Salon, and I hope that despite a few first time glitches, that you found the uploading & payment process relatively easy. The main advantage to this new digital method allows the people who are running salon to prepare & categorize ahead of time, which is extremely helpful and less stressful. A big hearty congratulations must first go out to Gigi O’Dea, who not only received The Best In Show, but who also won the entire Portrait category with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place! Way to go Gigi!! I also want to recognize Maria Lyle, who won a 1st place and then a 3rd place in the Unclassified category, congrats to Maria. Lastly, congrats to Billy Dzwonkowski, Jennifer Gerardi & Connie Summers for their merits. I was a little disappointed with our groups’ lack of entries for our Creative Quarterly, but was very pleased that Heidemarie Burke won with her graphic depiction of Looking Up at telephone operators working in their bright outfits, against a very blue sky. Great image Heidemarie! In casually talking with master photographer Chuck Neubauer at last months’ meeting, I decided to change up the upcoming Creative Quarterly themes, to make them more interesting and to ensure and encourage that we go out and shoot for the themes, and not just look through our archives to see if we have images that fit in to the current category. I hope that you are excited about this change, and want to remind you that our next CQ is for June and the title is entitled “Squint your eyes and look closer” lyrics taken from an Ani DiFranco song. Lastly, I would like to remind you to see the Print Of The Month rules below, and look forward to having everyone who comes to our meeting this month submit two prints, one in the portrait category & another in the unclassified category so we can ensure that keep these two categories open. Sincerely, Jennifer Gerardi

CREATIVE QUARTERLY There is a ‘Theme’ announced for each quarter. Each member may enter up to two 8 x 10 prints per quarter. The winner is picked by the Master Photographer members of BPPA that are in attendance. Prints for Creative Quarterly will be judged in March, July, September and November. March: “Lines” June: “Shapes & Forms” September: “Movement” November: “Expressions” Print of the Month New Rules for 2015 - You may now enter up to two 8x10 prints - You must put your name and category on the back of each print. - The categories are the same as Salon: Portraits, Social Functions, Unclassified, Albums, Electronic Imaging (E.I.) If you fail to do so, your print will be disqualified. We will have a First and Second place winners for each category. We need three print entries, in order to judge a category. If we do not have enough for a certain category, you will be asked to move it into another category, if you want. - We encourage you to finish your print with nice borders, and strokes, just like an image is presented in salon, as we will not be using framed matts anymore. - The print submission time is the first 20 minutes of the meeting. After that you will not be allowed to enter your print. Then we will ask everyone to start voting 30 minutes into the meeting, we will ask you to write your initials on your ballot. - Once an image has been in a salon it cannot go into Print of The Month. - Winners, please email me at bayprofessionalphotographers@gmail.com your winning images, if you want them to appear in the newsletter within 48 hours after winning.
