The President’s Message Hello Everyone! Let’s talk about blogging and how it attracts new clients. Any marketer worth their weight in gold will tell you that regular blogging is important. However, how you approach your blogs and how you frame your posts makes a difference between a yawning reader and a receptive client. Here are some tips for cultivating an engaging blog that can lead to new business. CALL TO ACTION End your blog strong. A call to action telling your readers what to do next is an imperative. This will encourage your readers to read more. Without it, they may decide they read enough and go see what another photographer is up to. This is the “kiss of death” when it comes to using your blog to attract new prospects. Common calls to action are requesting your readers to share your post on social media or to comment with their opinion. Provide tools with each blog to encourage interaction. You won’t convert every prospect each time. But you will grow your following through social shares and gain more opportunities through the occasional inquiry.
newborns with the new props. Talk about the props. You could explain where you got the props. Maybe these are props you restructured or created yourself. Explain why you got them and what your ideas are in using them. This shows your readers your artistic ability and gives them some ideas of what to expect when they hire you to photograph their baby. They relate to your style of photography. Most importantly, keep their mindset at the helm of your writing. Inform them of the things they would most likely be interested in. This will make that potential client more comfortable with you. They will gain your trust. And by gaining your trust, that will give them the push to hire you rather than someone else. Hope you all enjoyed my post on blogging. I look forward to seeing all at the next meeting. Remember, it is Salon! Please don’t forget to wear your name badge. Thank you, Donna Williams
USE YOUR WORDS A good rule of thumb is a post that contains 80% text and 20% images. Tell a story with your post. Use your own words and let your personality shine through. You might offer your readers a behind the scenes perspective of a session or explain how you prepared for it. One blog I created was clothing suggestions. I explained why they should wear what they did and showed examples of my suggestions. Your readers will be more interested in you. They will feel they know you even before they actually meet you. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE Instead of featuring a particular client session, focus on a topic from sessions. For instance, maybe you purchased some new props for newborn sessions. Show some images of 5

LIFE TIME MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Gloria Pearse
T
he Member Spotlight for this month is Gloria Pearse, Master Photog.., who is happily retired.
Gloria Joined BPPA in 1992 after being transferred here from southern California where she started her photography career and held a board position with the Orange County Professional Photographers. Gloria is a BPPA past president in 1996 and 2006. She has worked on almost every committee with the exception of treasurer and has been an FPP delegate as well. She has also held the title of Photographer of the Year for BPPA. She has had many prints merit through FPP 12
and earned the Florida Service Award and Florida Education Degree. She has attended seminars and Florida School many times. She earned her Certified Prof essional Photographer in 2002 and Master of Photography in 2009. She has traveled to Imaging conventions around the country. She recently studied at the Santa Fe Workshop with a published cookbook photographer. Gloria has paid it forward through teaching, tutoring and judging print competitions in the area. She says that she will forever value the friendships and mentoring of the photographers in this association for her success in the business. She now enjoys her grandchildren and travels to Italy, China and Greece. In 2014, she contributed her skills to a cookbook project in the community where she lives. Along with a

retired chef, they styled and photographed many of the recipes for the book. The women’s club now sells the books with all the proceeds going to local charities. Lens Flare caught up with Gloria to ask her a few questions. LF: Why did you choose photography as your career? - I really just wanted good pictures of my kids and started taking classes. Needless to say, I was hooked. LF: How would you describe your work, and what is your favorite thing to photograph? - For many years, I concentrated on making a living photographing weddings, family portraits and kids. What I really like to do now is travel, photograph food, and of course capturing images of my three granddaughters.
LF: Who or what was the biggest influence on your career? - Studying many times with Monte Zucker to hone my posing and lighting skills and taking a ten week Dale Carnegie class which helped me gain confidence when photographing large groups of people and have control of the situation using humor and professionalism. I was influenced by so many others I studied with to inspire to have the reputation and respect in this business. LF: What do you think was the secret to your success? - Always doing more than what was expected, producing high quality work and honestly having an interest in client’s lives and relationships. 13
LF: Obviously you were very involved in BPPA, how did this affect your photography career or the direction you went with your art? - I was grateful for the support of my peers who were never my competition, but my mentors. We all supported each other in our successes as well as being there to help one another whenever needed. LF: If you had any advice for newer photographers, what would it be? - Remember that you will spend only 5% of your time behind the camera and the remainder of the time running your business. Passion and enjoyment of photography can be lost quickly when there’s not enough money to pay the rent and you’ve neglected your family while you took on low paying jobs.

Hello friends. I was pleased last month with the amount of entries for Print of The Month and the new system in general. Congratulations to Gigi O’Dea for first place in Unclassifed and to Billy Dzwonkowski for First Place in Portrait. Congrats to Sue Prentzel, & Billy Dzwonkowski & me, Jennifer Gerardi, for 2nd place honors. I hope you are all busy getting some images ready for Salon. So far we have judges Rob Morman & Jim Swallow on board. I have included instructions below for you to enter digitally at https:// printcompetition.com We will not be having a print of the month next month, but we will be having our Creative Quarterly theme, entitled “LINES.” You may submit up to 2 8x10 prints, please write your name on the back of your print. Remember that healthy competition makes us grow. By entering salon, competing in Print of the Month and Creative Quarterly, we practice and sharpen our skills. We create & can achieve great things! CREATIVE QUARTERLY There is a ‘Theme’ announced for each quarter. Each member may enter up to two 8 x 10 prints per quarter. The winner is picked by the Master Photographer members of BPPA that are in attendance. Prints for Creative Quarterly will be judged in March, July, September and November. March: “Lines” June: “Shapes & Forms” September: “Movement” November: “Expressions”

If you fail to do so, your print will be disqualified. We will have a First and Second place winners for each category. We need three print entries, in order to judge a category. If we do not have enough for a certain category, you will be asked to move it into another category, if you want. - We encourage you to finish your print with nice borders, and strokes, just like an image is presented in salon, as we will not be using framed matts anymore. - The print submission time is the first 20 minutes of the meeting. After that you will not be allowed to enter your print. Then we will ask everyone to start voting 30 minutes into the meeting, we will ask you to write your initials on your ballot. - Once an image has been in a salon it cannot go into Print of The Month. - Winners, please email me at bayprofessionalphotographers@gmail.com your winning images, if you want them to appear in the newsletter within 48 hours after winning.

IN THE NEWS
by Maria Lyle
From Heidemarie Burke
I ice skate in the adult basic skills program on Friday mornings. In the picture are 2 of my fellow skaters. The tall one Carol Brugger, also went to adult ice skating camp with me in Lake Placid, NY. last June. The ice dancer girl with the longer dress is BJ Hamilton who moved to Ft. Myers from NJ. Our rink has 3 competitions a year, Presidents Day, Labor Day (the big competition, and Veteran’s Day. Just like there are rules for salon competitions in photography, there are rules for ice skating competitions. The skaters have to state at what level they are skating. I skated in a level called freestyle 2 which is 2 levels past the basic skills level. I started ice skating at the rink about 5 years ago and recently added some private lessons to my group lessons. Competing helps to move forward in skill levels, not much different from the photographic competitions which also help you move forward in skill levels.
