The President’s Message Hello Everyone! I am honored to serve you again as President in 2015. Six years ago, I attended my first BPPA Meeting as the guest of the late Gay Sharp. She encouraged me to join Bay Professional Photographers Association. I enjoyed the meetings and attended just about everyone. I gained such insight from the programs. When Keith Millard asked me to step into a Director’s position, it was at that point I learned a great deal about our organization. The positions of Secretary, Vice-President, Program Chair and Membership Chair gave me insight on how our organization is run. That, in turn, helped me to handle the responsibility of being your President. Mentors such as Keith Millard, Kate Hill-Moore, Scott Hime and Maria Lyle, all past Presidents, helped to shape me to be a better President for you. To better serve you, I want to share my goals and that of our 2015 Board of Directors. First, we want to increase revenue for our guild to continue to provide good, quality of speakers. By increasing our monthly fees, moving to a more cost effective venue, increasing meeting attendance and a higher participation in salon, we will increase our revenue. We are also looking into educational seminars for day and evening classes. Education is a key component to our monthly meetings. In fact, programs and salon should be the primary reason you attend the meetings. Even if it is not your specialty, you will still learn. Remember, knowledge is power! Second, we want to increase our membership. We are actively seeking other photographers and photography related vendors. There are many values of being a BPPA member. Some of which are educational opportunities, support of a strong organization, scholarship awards and competition. There is no better way to show your commitment to your profession than by joining a professional organization in your field. It sends a strong statement to your clients and potential

clients. These are the important reasons we belong and why we want others to belong as well. If you know someone who you feel would be a benefit to our group, please bring them to a meeting as a guest. The more the merrier, right? We have an amazing organization. We are a group of professional photographers from Manatee and Sarasota counties. As other professional groups, we are elite. Everything we learn, and discuss and network involves photography. If you discussed this much photography with your friends and family members, they would run in the opposite direction. But here in our group we have the comradery of fellow professionals as ourselves. I look forward to serving you again as your President in 2015. I also want you know that there is an “open door” policy with me. If you have suggestions, I am happy to hear them. That is my job as President. It is to serve you. See you at Der Dutchman on February 16th! Please don’t forget to wear your badge. Thank you, Donna Williams

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Pilar Ojeda-Ferenu

T

he Member Spotlight for February is M. Pilar Ojeda-Ferenus, a student of photography.

LF: When did you first start taking photos, and why? - I started taking photos at the age of 14 because I’ve always been a very visual person, and I’d always enjoyed doing art projects from a young age. When I was a little girl, I drew, did paint by numbers, and I always loved doing art projects in elementary school, even painting some ceramic items (still have them), which were fired in a kiln at school. My recently departed maternal grandfather had a subscription to National Geographic from before I was born, and I remember taking an 14

interest in the photographs at an early age, since they were always so beautiful, colorful, and varied. I started taking photos of fun times with friends in Centennial, CO (Denver), where we lived at the time, and also on family trips, especially when we went to Chile to visit family (people & places). Photography is also in my blood, since my dad takes photos, and used to develop them in his home darkroom when he was first married to my mom. Lastly, my recently departed maternal grandfather took photographs of family trips, as well as from his years in the Chilean Merchant Marine, mostly slides, and put them all on videotape, to boot! -LF: What is your favorite tool to process your files. - I like both Lightroom and Photoshop for different reasons. I love how easy and user-

us

All Images © M. Pilar Ojeda-Ferenus

friendly Lightroom is, and when I first began learning how to use it, I was able to go right to the section of the Adobe book on the Develop module, and learn how to edit photos right off the bat. I’m still learning all the intricacies of all the different modules, and how you can use Lightroom to go from raw exposure to editing it, and ultimately either saving it in the computer, posting it on social media sites or other websites, or editing it in Photoshop, when more heavy duty retouching is required. I also love all that Photoshop can do, and I’ve got my favorite ways of editing and favorite tools that work best for me and my photography. LF: How long have you been a member of BPPA and why would you recommend it to other professionals? - I joined in June 2013. In 2014 I become the Social Committee Chair, since I love people,

and I’m no stranger to organizing and hosting events, this is my way back to give back to this great organization. I would definitely recommend joining BPPA (Bay) because it’s a great way to meet other professional photographers (in my case, I’m learning a lot from my colleagues and mentors, as a student photographer that is slowly going pro now). We have wonderful programs of relevance to photographers, which present an opportunity to learn and to better your photography as well as business skills. We also have competitions suchs as Salon and print of the month, in which to hone your photographic skills and learn by critique by our esteemed guest judges (one of them is my teacher, Master Photographer Michael Landes), we have fun at the meetings, and you form a bond with people that will back you up if you ever need anything, like taking over a 15

photoshoot with a customer because you had a last minute emergency, for example. Last but not least, you’ll enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being in this special organization. We have so many wonderful, friendly, talented folks in Bay! LF: Are you a member of any other professional group, be it for Photographers or a network group and how has this helped your business. - Yes, Florida Professional Photographers. I’ve learned a lot of wonderful things about taking better photographs and the business of photography at FOCUS, as well as meeting and networking with other professional photographers in the state, all of whom have experience that I find invaluable in talking and getting to know them, as well as becoming friends with many of them, and some I consider my mentors. I’m also in two Meetup groups, whom I shoot with occasionally, and which give me more time shooting, as well the opportunity to have my work critique (especially in one of the groups, where many of the photographers are pros). LF: What or Who inspires you? - I am inspired by so many things and so many people: beautiful architecture, beautiful places (woods, mountains, bodies of water, etc…), dilapidated houses, buildings, and things, people (whether done up in makeup and fancy clothes, or in their natural state as human beings with its rawness and candidness), animals (with their ability to just be what they are, free of the human faults (I love pet photography, but I especially love wildlife photography), art and culture, fashion, sports, and especially extreme sports (particularly snowboarding and rock climbing). The people that inspire me are many, as far as my mentors and photographers throughout the history of the medium are some of many photographers I can think of that inspire me to want to try new things, and push me to want to get better and better at my craft. Michael Landes has 16

believed in my abilities and has pushed me to keep working on bettering my skills, and we agree that getting as far as you can with your photographic education is a wonderful objective, so as to become the best photographer you can be. Rob Moorman was the catalyst for my finally taking the plunge back in 2012, and enrolling at pTEC, the school he attended to learn all about the camera, when I saw him give a lecture on what it takes to have your own photography business (it was great to get the inside info beyond “It’s not an easy profession to make a living at”, which I already knew . Also, multiple people here at Bay have inspired me to be a better photographer, like my good friend, Jennifer Gerardi (she’s also given me much good advice on the business of photography, and all it encompasses), and several others that have given me wonderful tips that I remember when taking photos!

IN THE NEWS

by Maria Lyle

Arnold Berns is an adventurer, an artist, a storyteller. He has traveled the world as a fine arts photographer and political photojournalist, capturing some of the most diverse countries, including their historic buildings, customs and people. He has roamed Ethiopia, Israel, Egypt and Kenya, Southern Africa and Cuba to name a few, seeking out potential subjects in each town and village he came across. From New York to New Mexico, South Dakota to North Carolina, he has photographed much of the United States. Berns is the quintessential Sarasota Historian, he has an extensive collection of Florida photography, including Sarasota and its iconic buildings past and present. He is responsible for the restoration and preservation of several great Sarasota structures. Most well known, is Berns’ serendipitous trip to his hometown of New York City in September 2001. He made his annual trek and captured the city in infrared black and white just three days before the events of September 11th. His iconic shots of the World Trade Center are surely some of the last images of that hallowed place, and have been featured in national campaigns. His collection of photography also includes Hollywood-type story boards — one-act plays told through consecutive photographs. The photographic story boards, ranging from five to 32 images, allow Berns to expand on the piece of the story each individual photograph tells and complete a visual one-act play. But photography is just one of Bern’s passions. For years, Berns has also worked to preserve and protect historical buildings in Sarasota. He served for eight years as the president and executive director of the Historical Society of Sarasota County and seven years as the treasurer of the Alliance for Historical

Preservation. He was appointed by the Board of Sarasota County Commissioners to the Sarasota Historical Commission and the Sarasota Historical Preservation Board. Berns purchased the northern portion of the Twin Motel, located at 1770 N. Tamiami Trail, which following restoration and creation of offices and retail, obtained Sarasota’s first historical designation as a motel, which was the second such designation in the State. Most recently, the building has been repurposed and dedicated to Berns’ photography studio and gallery of his work. This new space houses both Studio 41, a fine art photography business, as well as, Xpose Boudoir, a boudoir photography gallery. Fourteen rooms of the hotel have been turned into galleries connected by passage ways, allowing the visitor to move between the former motel rooms, which are now refitted as gallery space. Each room exhibits sets of photographs from individual geographic areas including, Berns’ Directors Series, Egypt and Israel, NYC (World Trade Center 9/7/01) and Coney Island, Albuquerque Balloon Festival, Photography Memorabilia, Fine Art, Cuba, Machu Picchu, Amazon River Cruise, Sarasota, Africa (Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, Batswana, Namibia), Bodyscapes, Erotic, and Special Storyboards. The effect is akin to a walking tour through some of the world’s most celebrated sites, and if the visitor is lucky, Berns might tag along and enhance the tour with his fascinating historical commentary. Please visit his website for more information: http://arnoldberns.com/

Donna Williams, our president, Connie Summers and Jennifer Gerardi attended Imaging USA 2015, in Nashville, TN. From February 1st through February 3rd, Donna explained: “We received a wealth of education that included photography live demos, Lightroom and Photoshop classes and business related topics. Thousands attend from around the world for a level of learning and networking you just can’t find elsewhere. From early morning to early evening, various speakers were scheduled to educate and inform all levels of photographers. Some of which have spoken at our meetings. These included Tim Kelly, Booray Perry, Gary Hughes and Marty Grivjack. The Expo, filled with vendors from labs to lights and everything in between, ran for three days. On Sunday, Canon sponsored an awesome Super Bowl party. It all ended with a rocking closing party on the last day from 8:00 to 11:00 pm sponsored by PPA. . Next year, Imaging USA will be held in Atlanta, GA from January 10-12, 2016. Needless to say we had a great time.”
