A good stair railing… for safety’s sake The stair railing, also called a handrail, is an important element as far as safety is concerned. Elderly people always use it to keep their balance and a handrail can stop someone from falling when making a false step or if the stairs are slippery. The stair railing is simply a piece of wood (or other material) which is fixed to the side of a staircase and which follows the slope of the stairs in order to hold on to it for support. It can be as big as the handle of a spade or bigger as is often the case with banisters for stone staircases.
