Mirrors create an elegant addition “Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who’s the fairest of them all?” While most of us don’t have a mirror that will actually talk to us, many mirrors speak to me and create an elegant addition to any design scheme. Mirrors make a room look larger, often acting as a fake window; they can reflect a spectacular view or flood natural light back into a dark dreary space. A great mirror will often provide a little bit of bling or drama to the design décor with an interesting frame or shape of the glass. Go big or go home: Don’t be scared to add a huge mirror to any room in your home. Large full height mirrors are great leaning at the end of a hallway, or as a statement piece over a fireplace. A large textured frame can act as a work of art, creating a real focal point in the space. Secure a mirror to the wall: Leaning mirrors on the mantle or sideboard is currently very trendy and really does look great, however, but please make sure that they are well secured at the bottom or heavy enough that they could never topple over. Not only is it seven years bad luck if it breaks, it is also very dangerous for children or pets. They could be seriously hurt by the broken glass, or even just the weight of the piece.
Frame it up: In older homes you will often find a piece of mirrored glass hung on the wall with clips or glue, and a frame around the glass is nowhere to be seen. A quick fix to jazz up one of these existing mirrors is to have a frame built to go around the existing glass. The frame finishes off the piece and adds a high end look to the space. Try reclaimed barn wood, or an interesting piece of crown molding to stylize the room.
