Kitchen Cabinetry: It’s what’s inside that counts! Designing a kitchen is a lot more complicated than it might seem. There are so many factors to take into consideration, like the way that your family operates in the home or the layout and restrictions of the space. Both function and style must play a significant role in your overall design concept. There are many ways to make your existing or new kitchen more functional. You want to give every square inch a purpose, and maximize the usability of the space. A lot of this can be achieved by incorporating integrated or after market hardware into your cabinetry. The corner cabinets in the kitchen are the bane of my existence! However, due to the “U shape” or “L shaped” design, they are often unavoidable. Traditionally they consisted of two options; a huge void space that was awkward to get into, or a floppy Lazy Susan system (yes, the turn tables on a pole that either slid under too much weight or your items constantly dumped off the back of the turning shelf). However, there are now some excellent options to make the most out of this cabinet. My personal favourite is the recycling centre. It offers three or four large bins that turn on a pole for easy access. They are an adequate size to help you sort your paper, cans, bottles, etc. until they need to go to the curb. Recycling has become a huge part of our culture, and we need to accommodate this. Other corner options include the
Amy’s personal favourite: The Recycling Centre “Super Susan”, which essentially is a set of turning shelves that sit on a fixed shelf and base (no centre pole). This allows you to store small appliances that may be heavy, because the shelf is supporting the weight of the contents, not just tension on a pole. Magic Corners are also a popular choice, because they store items inside the cabinet, but the shelves pull around the corner when you open the door, exposing the whole surface outside of the unit. Being able to view the contents in the back of the cupboard is always my ultimate goal. Too often the objects at the back of a 24-inch deep pantry or base cabinet get forgotten and wast-

ed. Roll out trays or drawers are a great solution to this problem. When planning the kitchen layout try to incorporate as many drawers as possible. If you are retrofitting an existing cabinet, install roll out trays that sit behind the cabinet door. When working with my clients to design the kitchen of their dreams, I always ask them if every item has a home. Take inventory of each item in your kitchen, and make sure that it has a dedicated place in the design. Use the dreaded skinny six-inch base cabinet to house your trays and cutting boards. This cabinet would be useless with horizontal, adjustable shelves, but install vertical dividers, and now you can organize all the awkward cookie sheets that usually sit under the stove. The full depth cabinet above your refrigerator is also a great space to install vertical dividers for trays and platters. There are many products that can also help you eliminate the rest of your kitchen woes and trouble spots, like cleaning supplies under the sink, garbage and kitchen waste, and your cutlery or spice drawers. There is a solution for everything!
