Choosing the perfect area rug Hardwood and other solid surfaces, such as tile and vinyl are flooding the marketplace and becoming the first choice for clients when renovating their spaces. Due to this trend in flooring choice, there has become a high demand for area rugs. Due to the large range of sizes and colors available, choosing an area rug has become overwhelming for my clients. There are a few things that we commonly look at before diving right in… What purpose is the rug serving in your space? Are there certain properties that it must have? And how does it fit into your overall design?

Area rugs are available in many materials, and vary in durability because of this. Ensure that you choose a rug that suites the purpose.

Style
Area rugs add the warmth and texture to a space that hardwood or laminate flooring lack. They feel great on your feet and allow a warmer surface for your children to play. Unlike wall to wall carpeting, they can be removed from the home to be professionally cleaned or replaced at a fraction of the cost when they are soiled by pets and kids. (Or “spilly” adults that create that red wine stain!)
Larger is better! An area rug pulls the room together and defines areas in an open concept home. You want at least the front legs of your furniture to be sitting on the rug. A larger size creates the illusion of a larger room. There are many styles and patterns available. Is your rug to serve as that pop of color, the statement piece for the room? Or is a high pile chunky texture the answer, serving as the backdrop of the room and an anchor to the rest of your space?
