Grand Vitara
Kizashi
This tough-little offroader trades V6 muscle for four-cylinder fuel efficiency and was revised in 2009 with a wheelbarrow-full of changes to the chassis, engines, and cabin. For the 2011 model year, however, the GV comes with a 166-horsepower 2.4litre four-cylinder engine, which means there’s no more 230-horsepower 3.2-litre V6. The four-cylinder is teamed with a four-speed automatic transmission whereas the V6 has a five-speed unit. There’s still standard four-wheel-drive: a dual-range unit (with a low-speed setting for serious off-roading) with a dashmounted transfer-case switch. Helping things out is traction and stability control that keeps the vehicle pointed in the right direction when the wheels start to lose grip. The GV also features a reinforced cabin for greater crash safety and a rigid platform that’s intended to aid both ride and road-holding capability. For the 2011 model-year, Grand Vitara trim levels are JX and JLX with a number of packages available. Base models come with plenty of stuff for your $30,000 investment, including climate control, all the
Tthe Kizashi is an interesting mix of form and function. In terms of size, this family-oriented fourdoor slots almost exactly half-way between other vehicles. It would appear that there’s a new mid-small — or is that junior-large — category. The Kizashi has become Suzuki’s flagship and represents a bold move by the automaker to shift to more upscale products. The wrap-around grille — with new chrome bits blended in for 2011 — and hood appear influenced by the SX4 model and the short rear deck and hunkered-down suspension transmit a sporty vibe. Inside, the well-bolstered front seats are of a type rarely found in conventional sedans, even as an option. The split-folding rear seat provides a decent amount of room in back for two adults. The one and only engine is the 185-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder unit and a sixspeed manual transmission. Swap in the continuously variable transmission and the horsepower rating drops to 180. You’ll need the CVT to get all-wheel-drive. For the 2010 model year, Kizashi was available in one fully-loaded fully loaded model and

usual power accessories, alloy wheels and pushbutton start. Even though it has a four-cylinder engine for 2011, the Grand Vitara can still tow 3,000 pounds, which is good enough for a small travel trailer. Passing a transport truck at highway speeds on a busy two-lane, however, might be a thing of the past.

Equator
The 2011 collection continues in sedan and hatchback models, while the new-last-year Aero hatchback has been discontinued. A 150horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine provides the motivation and Suzuki explains that its architecture is actually based on the 2.4-litre four-cylinder that powers the Kizashi four-door sedan. Transmission choices include a sixspeed manual or optional continuously variable units. The sedan is front-wheeldrive only, while the hatchback can be had in front- or all-wheel-drive. The optional AWD system in the hatch has three driver-controlled modes: frontwheel-drive for dry pavement; all-wheeldrive automatic that varies the torque split depending on available traction to a maximum of 50 per cent to the rear; and all-wheel-drive lock (30-50 per cent rear bias) that’s “designed to facilitate escape,” which is defeated once the SX4 is travelling beyond 50 km-h. For 2011, the hatchback comes in JA, JX and JLX while the sedan comes in JA and Sport, the latter of which includes special cladding, blacked-out grille and a lowered ride height. Common to all are four-wheel four wheel disc
The Equator pickup is now in its second year. The Equator displays a distinctive grille and bumper for a bold, aggressive look. The four-door Crew Cab body style has been fitted with a 261-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission. Also standard is a shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive system with both high/low range operated by an electronically controlled part-time transfer case. A four-wheel limitedslip system helps transfer power to the drive wheels with more grip when traction becomes iffy. The Equator is meant to be driven off-road, so key underbody hardware is tucked up to the frame rails for 23 centimetres of ground clearance. The standard-features list includes air conditioning, cruise control, remote keyless entry and power mirrors, locks and windows and a sixspeaker audio system. You also get a factory-applied spray-on bedliner that helps prevent corrosion and damage. Although the base Equator is priced at slightly less than a comparably comparably

Wheels 2011 special edition
Forte
Optima
The vehicle has generous dimensions, with an ample trunk that ranks second in its class. For those who need more flexibility hauling bulky objects, a fivedoor hatchback joins the four-door sedan and two-door Koup in the Forte family. To better distinguish it from the sedan, the hatchback gets a different grille, alloy wheels, lower valence design and centre console. Both models share a logically configured dashboard/control panel with its minimum of dials and switches. The Forte’s platform provides a reasonably agile behind-the-wheel experience. This is especially true of the Forte SX that possesses a sport-tuned suspension plus larger-than-standard front brake rotors for added stopping power. The Forte starts with a 156-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder in base LX and mid-range EX trims. Opting for the more performance-minded SX gets you a 173horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder. The biggest mechanical change for the 2011 model year is that both engines now use either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions (formerly a
Based on the same midsized car platform as the new Hyundai Sonata, where the Hyundai is organic, the Kia is more chiseled and more European. The Optima also shares the Sonata’s range of four-cylinder engines, which is a real gamble in a market so obsessed with power. But those four-bangers are nothing to sneeze at. The entry-level engine is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 200 horsepower. If that doesn’t sate your taste for speed, there’s a 271-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. There’s also a hybrid-electric version of the 2.4, but with only 169 horses. As you might expect, the hybrid is the most fuel efficient, but even the base engine produces a respectable 11.7/8.1 l/100 km (city/ highway). The hybrid system uses never-beforeemployed lithium-polymer batteries that are lightweight and can actually be formed into shapes. The hybrid can travel at speeds of up to 100 km-h without the gas engine assisting. Very well equipped for the class with standard air conditioning, power everything, a cooled glovebox, tilt and telescop telescop-

LX content is modest, but does provide power windows, heated outside power mirrors, manual tilt steering and a four-speaker audio system with steering wheel mounted controls. steering-wheel-mounted-controls.
Sorento
Sportage
The Sorento, Kia’s truckish big wagon that specialized in travelling well past the point where the pavement or the trail ends, has now become a lot more urbanized. Although the off-road fraternity loved the previous model, Kia saw greener pastures in selling the next-generation Sorento to a broader group seeking a stylish, comfortable wagon that takes its highway-cruising role seriously, regardless of weather or road status. The 2011 edition, available in front- or all-wheel-drive, also offers a split-folding third-row-seating option for folks needing to transport up to seven passengers. Buyers can choose between a 175horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine and a 276-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. Both are closely matched in terms of fuel economy, which means your final choice will likely boil down to affordability and the amount of grunt you require. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard with the four-cylinder, with a six-speed automatic optional, but standard with the V6. All-wheel-drive is available with either engine, except on the base manual-transmission model. Standard features include air conditioning, tilt and telescopic steersteer
The third-generation Sportage follows the similarly sized and focused Hyundai Tucson (Kia is part of Hyundai) in receiving a whole new look and a shared purpose in life. They also share the same basic platform and are roughly the same size. Styling aside, the most significant change to the Sportage is what you’ll no longer find under the hood and that’s an optional V6. The sole powerplant is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 176 horsepower when hooked up to a sixspeed manual transmission (available only on base front-wheel-drive models), or 170 horses with the optional sixspeed automatic. Later in the model year, Kia will reportedly introduce a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that will pump up the volume to the tune of 270-plus horses. The Sportage is the beneficiary of a brand new all-wheel-drive system that under normal driving conditions directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque to the front wheels. However, once tire slip is detected, the required degree of power is instantly deployed to the rear wheels. Additionally, a manually selected “Lock Lock Mode Mode”

Wheels 2011 special edition
Jetta/GLI
Touareg
The Jetta is now dimensionally similar to its major competitors since it’s about eight centimetres longer than the outgoing version. Most of that stretch occurs between the front and rear wheels for increased passenger comfort. Pop open the hood to find the previously retired 115-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. VW claims a sub10-second zero-to-60 mph (96 km-h) time and VW lopped off a whopping 200 kilograms of base curb weight. Last year’s standard 170-horsepower 2.5-litre fivecylinder gas engine returns as an option, as does the popular 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo-diesel (called the TDI). Arriving later will be the Jetta GLI with its 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder. The gasoline engines are mated to fivespeed manual transmissions, or optional six-speed automatics. The turbo-diesel offers a six-speed manual or optional sixspeed automated manual transmission called the DSG (short for Direct Shift Gearbox) that does away with the pesky torque converter, which means improved fuel economy and much quicker shifts to aid acceleration.
The 2011 Touareg has a completely redesigned interior space that gives as much comfort to the passengers as the driver. It has an intelligent crash response system which automatically unlocks all doors, disconnects the battery terminal from the starter, shuts off the fuel supply and turns on the warning hazards and interior lights when a severe crash is detected. There are many-driver friendly functions like the electronic parking brake which can be set and released at the touch of a finger, a tire pressure monitoring system, auto-dimming interior mirror, and 4Motion all wheel drive system with Torsen differential giving you a 31 degree climbing angle and stability on any type of ground surface. There’s also a standard navigation system, and available rear view camera. A multifunction steering wheel keeps power and control at your fingertips. Tiguan
Golf/GTI
The Tiguan is the kind of ride that price- and size-conscious buyers look for in a vehicle that also offers enough space for their friends and/ or family and their gear. And the fact that sure-footed all-wheel-drive is available makes this Volkswagen more enticing. Of course an attractive design also adds to the Tiguan’s appeal, including an attractive chrome grille and bulging flanks that transmit a sense of stability and four-season competency. Equally sharp-looking is the interior that could easily pass as originating from BMW’s design studio, considering the high-endstyle dash, cleanly tailored seats and premium carpeting. Rear passengers will appreciate the 15 centimetres of fore/aft travel as well as the reclining 60/40 split seat back. For more cargo space, the rear seat back, as well as the front passenger bucket, can be folded flat. Tiguan is powered by a 200-horse 2.0litre turbocharged four-cylinder connected to a six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic. Tiguan runs the spectrum with three trim levels and plenty of base equipment of the air/cruise/power variety as well as alloy wheels and six standard airbags.
Volkswagen clearly believes there are ways to build fuelefficient small cars other than following the hybrid route. For proof, the German automaker offers up the Golf with its cleanburning and affordable turbodiesel engine option. The Golf is available in two- and four-door hatchback variants as well as wagon with a base 170-horsepower 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine. There’s also a 140-horsepower 2.0-litre turbodiesel (on four-door Golf hatchbacks and wagons) that’s quite torquey and pulls down 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.7 on the highway, which is about 35 per cent better than the base 2.5. As before, the sporty GTI is available in two- and four-door models and comes with a carryover 200-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline four-cylinder along with a six-speed manual transmission or an optional paddled-shifted six-speed Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) with “launch control”. The DSG creates lightningquick manual shifts without the driver having to manually operate the clutch (there’s no pedal). The TDI gets the same transmission choices, but the base 2.5 gas engine comes with a five-speed five speed manual

Along with VW’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive (which is only available with the automatic transmission), the options include rear-seat side-impact airbags, a 300-watt premium audio package, touch-screen navigation system, rear-view park assist, bigger wheels and oversized moonroof.

Tucson
Elantra
For 2011, Hyundai offers the Tucson in five model trim levels. While the main four models (GL, GLS, Limited, Limited with Navi) all depend on the 2.4-litre four-cylinder “world engine”, Hyundai this year slid in an entry-level L model with 2.0-litre engine into the lineup. The 2.4-litre with variable valve timing produces 176 hp and 168 lb/ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission with Shiftronic manual function. On-demand AWD is optional on the GL and GLS and standard on the two Limiteds. The GLS AWD tested here has fuel consumption ratings of 10.1L/100 km city, 7.1L/100 km highway and 8.8L/100 km combined. In terms of safety equipment, the Tucson leaves nothing out with antilock braking system (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), traction control system (TCS), dual front, side, and curtain airbags with rollover sensor, Downhill Brake Control (DBC) and Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). On the inside you will find: AM/FM/ XM/CD/MP3/Aux/USB stereo with six speakers, power windows and door locks,
The 2011 Elantra has wholesale changes starting with the switch to the latest generation four-cylinder engine known in-house as the “Nu”. At 1.8-litres, it replaces the 2.0-litre Beta engine in the outgoing Elantra. Also new is a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission that replaces the former five-speed manual and four-speed automatic. Hyundai claims best in class fuel economy, power and power-to-weight ratio in the class. According to Hyundai Canada, the new Elantra should be good for 1,000 kilometres on a single tank of regular fuel. The 2011 Elantra is equipped with just about every safety and drive aid you can think of such as six airbags, electronic stability control with traction control and four-wheel disc brakes that stop it shorter than a Civic and Corolla according to Hyundai. As is usual with Hyundai, there are five basic trim levels (L, GL, GLS,

Bluetooth hands-free phone system, air conditioning, steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, cloth inserts with leatherette bolster seats and front heated seats. And just for the record, the GLS on the outside features power heated outside mirrors, rear wiper/washer, rear spoiler, 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 225/60R17 tires, roof rails and fog lamps.
Santa Fe
Sonata LTD
The Santa Fe’s claim to fame is that it is comfortable, stylish and affordable. There’s a standard 2.4 litre four cylinder engine with 175 horse power as well as an optional 276 horsepower 3.5 litre V6. The starting model includes six airbags, traction and stability control (to prevent a skid or spin), power windows/locks,doors, heated outside mirrors, air conditioning and tilt/ telescoping steering. Basically the base model is not so base. At the top end of the spectrum is the Limited with Navigation that adds leather seating surfaces (heated in front) dual climate control, backup camera, auto dimming rearview mirror, among other niceties as well as a premium audio system and a power sunroof. The Santa Fe’s smart design means it has generous head, leg and shoulder room. A fuel saving eco indicator helps you adjust your driving to save you gas and money while benefiting the environment. As with all Hyundai’s it offers a 5-year/100,000 km comprehensive limited warranty, 55-year/100,000 year/100,000 km
One look at the 2011 Sonata and it’s easy to see why Hyundai has been on such a roll of late. The Sonata is sleek, sexy and as is the norm with Hyundai offerings, provides value for the dollar. Seeing the strides Hyundai has made in the past few years, one shouldn’t be too surprised that the Sonata may be one of the best bargains on the market for a mid-size sedan that has the interior of a full-size sedan. If you don’t want all the bells and whistles that the Limited trim offers, even the base GL is well equipped compared to almost any entry-level car. Where Hyundai has always excelled is offering standard features on lowerpriced cars that would be options elsewhere. Case in point, the base GL model Sonata offers items like heated front seats (in automatic only), active front headrests, heated power adjustable side mirrors, remote keyless entry, steering wheel mounted audio and cruise control and Bluetooth hands free phone system as standard

features. That, combined with the outstanding five-year, 100,000 km comprehensive/ powertrain should give owners peace of mind. Now that it has the styling to go along with what was already a great package, the 2011 Sonata is poised to be at the top of the ladder in the midsize class.

Prius
Yaris
With more than one million of these gasolineelectric cars whirring away around the globe, the Prius is acknowledged as the car that took its unique fuelsipping technology from pie-in-the-sky science experiment into the mainstream. It has also proven to be one of the most practical and cleanest ways so far to significantly reduce emissions and fuel use. The 2011 Prius maintains most of the model changes brought in for the 2010 model year. The comfortable seats, the expansive instrument panel, and the fact that up to three sets of golf clubs can be stowed in back, means the Prius feels roomier than the tape measure indicates. The improved gasoline/electric-motor duo comprises a 98-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine teamed with a 27-kilowatt electric motor to produce 134 horsepower. Since vehicle weight has been kept in check, the Prius’s seemingly moderate output can be felt the moment the powerplant kicks in under acceleration. The standard continuously variable transmission helps achieve a rating of 3.7 l/100 km city (which is 76 miles per gallon, by the way) and 4.0 highway,
If you think a Prius hybrid is just too much technology voodoo to handle, good fuel economy at a much lower pricepoint is still possible; social responsibility at a personally responsible price. The popular Yaris is available in three body styles: a traditional four-door sedan that resembles a three-quartersized Camry; and two- and four-door hatchback versions that feature roomy split-folding rear seats and can carry quite a load when those seats are folded flat. With a light base weight of 1,040 kilograms, the one-engine-fits-all 106horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder feels rather peppy. It’s mated to a five-speed manual transmission or optional fourspeed automatic. Base equipment for all is relatively spartan, while up-level models add air conditioning, power-controlled accessories and upgraded audio systems. The RS four-door hatchback is the sporty one in the group and arrives with colour-keyed body bits, sport seats, 15-inch wheels (14-inchers are standard), CD-equipped CD equipped stereo and

while a dashboard display monitor tracks your “green” status and will also tabulate average fuel economy over specific intervals or per trip. The Prius delivers an impressive array of standard gear, while the optional content list offers a unique power moonroof/ solar panel that runs an electric fan to cool interior temperature on hot days. days
Tacoma
Sienna
While the smaller Tacoma gives away some size and cargo capacity/towing ability to the larger Tundra, how often – if ever – do you need the extra capacity? Consider that the four-cylinder Tacoma provides an impressive 10.0/7.7 city/highway rating, making it one of the more fuel-efficient small trucks in its class. If, in fact, towing/hauling is more of a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. Outfitted with six standard airbags and traction and stability control to help keep the driver on track when the road surface becomes disagreeable, the Tacoma comes in extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models and your choice of rear-or four-wheel-drive. The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases are made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Base Tacomas are bare-bones work trucks and are a bit light in the content department, but do include a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, a six-speaker audio system and power windows and door locks. However, you can easily load up this
As before, there’s seating for up to eight passengers, or seven if the optional second-row high-back chairs are selected to replace the three-person bench. On the top-level Sienna Limited, those chairs turn into reclining lounge seats that also feature swing-up foot rests for maximum self-indulgent travel (just try to pry the kids out of them). The third-row bench folds flat into the load floor when not needed. Along with being the only minivan available with all-wheel-drive (frontwheel-drive is standard), the Sienna now features a segment-exclusive four-cylinder base engine: a 187-horsepower 2.7litre powerplant. The now-optional 266horsepower 3.5-litre V6 carries over from the 2010 model and is mandatory when all-wheel-drive is selected. Interestingly, the V6’s economy is close to that of the four-cylinder. Both engines connect to six-speed automatic transmissions that replace the previous five-speed unit. The Sienna LE comes with tri-zone air conditioning (driver, passenger and rear), multi-adjustable driver’s seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel plus the usual power-controlled goodies. The Sport Edition includes a mesh mesh-style style grille,

Murano
Frontier
Murano is a finely detailed tall wagon with a passenger-car-based platform. After only a couple years since a major redesign, the 2011 model year proves to be a season of fine tuning. A new grille, front bumper and LED taillights top the changes. Inside, there are new colours for the gauges and centre console, along with some changes to standard content. As before, the Murano’s 265-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 is your only pick. It’s connected to a second-generation continuously variable transmission designed to be smoother and quicker to respond to driver commands than the original. Even the Murano’s standard all-wheel-drive system was reprogrammed with shorter reaction time to more quickly move the power around when traction is dicey. For 2011, a new SV trim level splits the gap between base and mid-level versions. Entry-point Murano models come with climate and cruise control, six-speaker audio system, assorted power accessories, six airbags plus traction and stability control to help keep the vehicle pointed in the right direction. Moving up the price list adds fog lights, power telescopic
Being about 550 kilograms lighter (base weight to base weight) than the Titan and having a smaller engine(s) translates into a 10.7/8.7 l/100 km city/ hwy rating (2.5-litre fourcylinder). The base Frontier comes with 152horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder or the optional 261-horsepower 4.0-litre V6 that’s better suited to towing and offroading since it’s the only way to get the optional 4x4 system. The 4.0-litre engine is a direct offshoot of the award-winning 3.5-litre V6 that has appeared in many other Nissan vehicles over the years. The Frontier continues to be offered in both extended-length King Cab and fourdoor Crew Cab body styles and in several trim levels including a base four-cylinder S (formerly XE) 4x2 King Cab and uplevel SV (called the SE in 2010), ritzy SL (formerly the LE) and the off-road-inspired PRO-4X model available in either King or Crew Cab body styles. Frontier does not offer a regular-cab model. PRO4X, available in two- or four-wheel-drive includes off-road tuned Bilstein-brand performance shocks, skid plates, unique 16 inch wheels and electronic locking 16-inch

steering wheel, leather seats, eight-way power driver’s seat, four-way power passenger seat and a split-folding 60/40 rear seat. Loaded-up versions come with a power liftgate, heated front seats and outside mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, 20-inch wheels (new-design 18-inchers are standard), premium 11-speaker sound system, 17-centimetre information display/rearview monitor and a dual-panel moonroof with a second-row second row fixed skylight.
Juke
Titan
The Juke’s front end sports a pair of audaciously shaped fenders that dominate the overall look. The headlights appear countersunk into the nose between the bumper and the grille while the integrated turnsignal pods are positioned on either side of the hood. The five-passenger cabin confirms more free-form sculpting, especially the centre console that’s supposed to resemble a motorcycle fuel tank. The twin primary gauges are oversized, the sports car-like front seats are well bolstered and the split-folding rear bench seat can be flattened to maximize cargo space. The compact Juke is nearly 60 centimetres shorter than Nissan’s mid-size Rogue. However, its generous width provides sufficient shoulder room for adults. The music for this Juke box is provided by a 188-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission (frontwheel-drive models only), or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit. The available all-wheel-drive splits the torque up to 50 per cent between the front and rear wheels when called upon and can also direct available rear-axle torque to the outside wheel in a turn for greater
Titan makes an appeal to hardworking individuals with four choices in bed length, ending at 7’3” (2.2 metres). You can only get the extra length, however, on extended-cab models and not the four-door Titans. From the outside, the Titan mimics the dimensions and attitude of its domestic rivals and attempts to match them under the hood with an allaluminum 317-horsepower 5.6-litre V8. More important than peak horsepower numbers is the torque, as in close to 400 pound-feet of it, most of which is available from just 2,500 rpm. That helps the Titan tow about 4,320 kilograms when appropriately equipped. Two cab styles are offered: extended King Cab (with a pair of reverse opening rear access doors that swing 180 degrees); and a four-door Crew Cab. Both two- or four-wheel-drive versions are available. There’s enough interior room to hold five tall adults with front and rear legroom that’s practically identical. Interior amenities include a choice of bench or bucket seats as well as adjustable foot pedals. Four-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard as well as side side-impact impact and side side-curtain curtain

Accord
Civic
Both the sedan and swoopy coupe receive front and rear resculpting for the 2011 model year,. Honda’s thrifty 2.4-litre engine, when equipped with the optional five-speed automatic transmission (a five-speed manual in the base model), improves fuel economy by seven per cent in the city and 11 per cent on the highway, thanks to a raft of small changes including improved aerodynamics, revised gearing and reduced engine friction. The base SE (replacing the LX) sedan gets a 177-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder while all EX and EX-L models feature a 190-horsepower version of the 2.4. To stay competitive with vehicles such as the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry, an optional 271-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 offers additional horsepower and torque. A five-speed manual transmission or extra-cost five-speed automatic are available on all four-cylinder models, while the five-speed automatic is standard with the V6. A six-speed manual gearbox is part of a special V6-coupe-only performance package that also enhances low- and mid-range engine torque. Honda s advanced Variable Cylinder Honda’s
Even after all these years, the Civic is still the car to beat. Since the Fit arrived for the 2007 model year, the Civic has been pushed slightly upmarket, but still features the qualities that made this small car such a hit over the years. The base engine continues to be a 140horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder while a 197-horsepower 2.0 is the domain of Si models. A five-speed manual is standard while a five-speed automatic is optional. The Si, in appealing to sports-minded drivers, gets a six-speed manual. The instrument cluster features a digital-readout speedometer pressed high up on the dash against the windshield with the rev gauge dropped in behind the steering wheel. The instrument cluster features a digital-readout speedometer pressed high up on the dash against the windshield with the rev gauge dropped in behind the steering wheel. No fewer than six airbags, including side-impact and sidecurtain protectors, come with all models, along with anti-lock brakes. Most Civics, except for the frugally priced DX, get

Management (V6, automatic-transmission models) allows the engine to function using three, four or all six cylinders depending on load and throttle position, with the intention of maximizing fuel economy while cruising, coasting and decelerating.
CR-Z
Odyssey
This nifty little sport coupe is Honda’s attempt to target a younger eco-aware demographic looking for something fun and affordable to bop around in. The CR-Z actually bears some resemblance to the CRX, Honda’s fondly remembered Civicbased runabout. Lifting the mostly glass rear hatch reveals an abundance of cargo room as well as a hidden console directly behind the passenger seat that’s ideal for storing valuables. Since the CR-Z borrows from the four-door Insight hybrid’s architecture, the wide cabin has plenty of elbow room, something the skinny CRX (and original two-seat Insight, for that matter) lacked. A 1.5-litre four-cylinder gasoline engine combines with a helper electric motor/generator for a total of 122 hp. Transmission picks consist of a supersmooth and super-fun six-speed manual (currently the only one available on any hybrid), or optional continuously variable (CVT) unit with paddle shifters. The six-speed isn’t as fuel-efficient as the CVT, but the manual makes the CR-Z more fun to drive. Hill Start Assist eliminates the stress of launching the car on an incline. Both transmissions provide the driver with a selection of operating
With each successive generation, Honda has honed its fullsize people mover to the point that every aspect of the vehicle functions in perfect harmony. The distance between the front and rear wheels remains unaltered, but overall length has been slightly increased and the body structure sits ever-so-slightly lower to the ground. The Odyssey’s 3.5-litre V6 is mostly carryover, but given a number of small improvements it has gained four more horsepower (now 248) and a touch more torque. The engine’s standard variable cylinder management program seamlessly cuts out two or three of the cylinders under light loads and helps contribute to significant fuel-economy gains. LX, EX and EX-L Odysseys equipped with fivespeed automatic transmission are now rated at 11.7 and 7.2 l/100 km (city/highway), previously 13.3 and 8.5. Meanwhile, the Touring edition’s six-speed automatic helps improve those numbers to 10.9/7.1, compared to the previous 12.3/7.8 rating. Fuel economy aside, the Odyssey drives noticeably flatter and truer than the outgoing version with much reduced body roll in the turns. Interestingly, Honda engineers shunned electric power steer steer-
