editor’s letter We’re delighted you’ve picked up this issue, replete with timely style notes, beauty tips and home advice for the season! Fall tends to bring memories of beautiful changes: the months of delicate maple leaves descending from the trees, the transformation of your wardrobe from bright lollipop colors to warmer, earthier tones, and the concoction of comfort foods in the kitchen.
Fall Winter Spring Summer Whatever the season, you’ll find a look
But this year, the season is anything but traditional. If you think the photo shoot is going to dictate plain, solid colors like browns and blacks, think again. We’ve had so much fun putting together a colorful style guide dominated by iris blue, rich purple, hunter green and dusky rose. If you’re in the mood to redecorate your home or venture into extreme makeover territory, take a look at the “Top Ten Mistakes” people make while decorating a home. It’s quite amazing to see how easy it is to avoid a poorly stylized house and a cluttered layout. Remember to look before you leap! And of course, we’re all too concerned with where that apple pie or cranberry tart will end up: on our hips and thighs! We’ve put together a list of key, fat burning exercises that will keep your lower body looking svelte

Beyond the Little Black Dress Why this Fall Season is Richer, Cooler and More Brilliant Than Ever Before We tend to think of fall as a time to wear the browns, blacks and the basics. The temptation is to bring out the little black dress and adorn it with gems and rhinestones and prettily painted nails. But we’ve tossed all those rules aside this year. One look at the Pantone Color report for this season will confirm how “on the edge” this season is. Fall is typically defined as a “season of change,” and a time for elegant, rich hues. This year, the designers have underlined cooler colors like blues, greens and purples followed by variations in yellows, warm reds, and orange. This doesn’t mean there is no place for that chocolate brown suit you’ve been dying to sport. But it does mean that your creative mind can afford to be a little more daring when it comes to color choices. Jen Fellows Maegon Coble models Katie Dallas & Ben Estrada photography

Blue iris, for example, is one of the top colors chosen by designers this season, and is also Pantone Color of the Year. It is a blend of rich purple and blue, and made quite a splash on the catwalk during Fashion Week. In the following pages, you’ll see how vivid and brilliant the outfits for fall can be. As you select your outfits, here are a few tips to keep in mind: 1. Emphasize warm colors like Burnt Orange for both dresses and gowns. If you don’t wear an outfit in this

If you’re not so daring as to wear a full-fledged red dress, then go creative with accessories (including your nail color). 3. If you have darker skin, then emphasize tones like Ochre and Mustard. These will complement dark skin beautifully and jazz up any plain dress. 4. Bold pink does not have as much a place for fall as a Dusky Rose.

From brooches to hairpins to nail colors to jewelry, there’s no end to how creative your accessories can get. If you’ve always had a taste for the colorful, then this season is your canvas. Fall in Love with Your Nails This Season Loves Lollipop Colors, Metallics and Pure Gold
Fall is a season we typically associate with the color of maple leaves, cooler tones, brilliant reds and oranges. Not in 2008! The nail palette is simply bursting with vibrant shades from amethyst to pool blue to metallics like gold. Nonie Creme, the creative director and celeb manicurist for butter LONDON works on the line’s color range each season. She says this year’s fall palette is “an edgy collection of dark jewel tones, mixed with essential metallics and one neutral shade.” Jen Fellows Maegon Coble MODEL Allyson Lee TECH SUPPORT Shane Fellows PHOTOGRAPHY

Sally Hansen manicurist Dana Caruso says, “This autumn, the color palette for fall will consist of opulent colors that range from beige neutrals with soft undertones of aurora borealis, jewel tone plums, burgundies and chocolate with fine traces of pearlescence.” The palette gives you ample opportunity to create great combinations on your own. Here are some tips to carry you through this year’s vivid paint box. Don’t Match Your Nail Color And Your Dress “Don’t wear a matching dress and nail color,” says Creme. “Try something more high fashion and wear intentionally clashing colors that will make both dress and nails pop.” Caruso says “Combining bold color with vibrant colorful fashions this fall is what you will be seeing as autumn approaches. The color palettes represent high tech with natural influences and blends of modern sophistication.”

Gold and Gray are the New Black Black was exceptionally hot last fall for nails, but gold may well be the new black. “Modern gray that is a metallic charcoal will be replacing last seasons beyond popular intense black,” says Caruso. “This season’s collection possess a sophistication that is guaranteed to electrify.” Tips to Make Your Polish Last Longer. A recent New York Times article mentioned how chipped nail polish is currently very in. Women who were so busy and did not have the time to get regular manicures are now sporting chipped nails and passing it off as high fashion, but we don’t subscribe to that temporary fad. What could be more beautiful than beautiful, elegant nail polish? But the tricky part is making them last more than a few days. “The biggest ‘secret’ I share with my staff to achieve long lasting nail lacquer is how to properly wrap the nail with a moderate

amount of lacquer,” says Creme. “Always begin with a clean dry nail, apply a base coat, and then stroke a smidge of lacquer horizontally across the tip of the nail, polish as usual (one or two coats) and ALWAYS use a top coat. Another tip is to reapply your top coat daily.” Here are some top tips to make your polish last longer than a week. 1. Make sure you thoroughly remove all traces of old nail polish and ensure your nail surfaces are clean. 2. Make sure you use an acetone-based nail polish remover to remove excess oil from your nails so your coat will stay on longer. This is key to maintaining a long lasting nail color. 3. Always apply a base coat. Use a protein-based base coat if possible. An excellent base coat is Sally Hansen’s Hard as Nails. 4. Apply the first coat of nail polish and allow it to completely dry before

applying a second coat. Use the long lasting version of the nail colors as much as possible. 5. Finish with a top coat. A good strong top coat is L’Oreal’s Pro Manicure. 6. Avoid being in the sun as much as possible. The sun dries out your nail polish and the color chips quickly. 7. Push back cuticles instead of cutting them. You can pick up a good cuticle moisturizer like Sally Hansen’s Vitamin E Nail & Cuticle Oil. 8. Metallics just may well be your best friend. “The great news is that when using a polish that contains undertones of metallic particles the result will be a longer lasting polish application,” says Caruso. “These delicate micro jeweled flecks adhere very well to base coats that are formulated to be used specifically as a base coat, thus enabling your polish to last longer.” 1. Rihanna
Why The World Is Under Her “Umbrella” Rihanna is the beautiful pop icon next door: gorgeous, laidback, but innately ambitious. The Barbadian beauty released her deluxe album “Good Girl Gone Bad: Reloaded” which has her new disc single “Take a Bow.” She is the first female from Barbados to have won a Grammy award, and she has amassed 40 hit singles in the U.S. since her debut album. As Covergirl spokesperson, Rihanna has a lot on her plate, both music-wise and beauty-wise. Reinventing Beauty sits down with her for this exclusive Q&A. How do you feel about the re-release of “Good Girl Gone Bad- Reloaded?” Why a re-release? "Good Girl Gone Bad" was a more mature and edgy album for me- and I’m very excited to re-release it with three new songs. Were you inspired to write “Take A Bow” after Madonna? Who has been your inspiration for your songs?
What was it like walking down the Catwalk in Milan of the DSquared Fashion Show? Did it feel great to be a “model”? I love DSquared! Walking down the catwalk in Milan was an honor and I would love to do it again! They are one of my favorite designers. As an international style icon, what are your favorite designers?
“Take A Bow” was actually written by Ne-Yo. He’s an amazing song-writer and always has a great perspective on females and relationships. My inspiration is some of my favorite artists like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Bob Marley, but my inspiration is also determined by what is going on in my life at the time.
Balenciaga, Ungaro, Stella McCartney just to name a few.
You walk in great company as the face of Covergirl. What cosmetics from their line can you not live without?
I started the “Believe Foundation” because I really wanted to give back to the community and work with children. I love children and think they are the future. BELIEVE is dedicated to inspiring children all over the world through providing educational, social, and medical needs and I’m really proud to be a part of the lives of these children who can contribute so much to our society.
I absolutely LOVE the Wetslick Fruit Spritzers. I have them in every color. Recently I have been using their new lip gloss called “Amazemint” which is mint flavored! Coming to New York after living in Saint Michael must have been a huge change – how did you adjust? Did you get used to stardom pretty quickly? Coming to New York wasn’t such a drastic change for me because as a young girl I used to come visit my grandparents all the time. As far stardom goes I keep myself surrounded with good people who have been with me since the beginning. I don’t think you can ever get used to stardom- its very flattering and I appreciate my fans. What’s the single you’re most proud of and why? "Umbrella" because it took me to new heights.
The shoes you can’t live without? Gisepi, Balenciaga. Tell me more about your charity, “Believe.” Why did you start it?
Your tour calendar is non stop!!!! How do you get the rest you need to look so beautiful? I am always traveling and always on tour, but I love it. Resting as much as possible, exercising, and eating well are really the things that keep me going. As well as having my friends around me to keep me grounded and happy! If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be? I would give every child a healthy environment to grow up in. 51

Cute as a Button Wreath
STEP 1
STEP 2
Cover the wreath form by pinning one end of the orange floral ribbon to the wreath form. Wrap the ribbon around the form, pinning every so often until the wreath is covered. Secure the end of the ribbon with a straight pin and trim.
Make a hanger for the wreath with a 28inch length of ¼-inch turquoise ribbon. Tie the ribbon around the form and knot, leaving 12-inch ends.
STEP 3
STEP 4
STEP 5
To create the little ribbon ties, cut 8-inch lengths of the ¼-inch wide turquoise, lime, yellow, and orange ribbons. Wrap one length around the wreath, tie into a knot, and trim, leaving 1½-inch ends. Continue, alternating colors every quarter inch, until the wreath form is covered in little knots.
To arrange the knots, gently tug them around so they are misaligned, pushing some toward the outside edge and some toward the inside edge of the wreath form
To cover the wreath, hot glue buttons all over the front of the wreath form. Glue the buttons on top of the ribbons, but not over the knots and ties. Trim any hot glue strings. Hang on your door and welcome spring with buttons and bows!
This delightful button wreath is simple to make and full of charm. Just wrap a wreath form with ribbon and cover with buttons and tiny knots. Choose tropical colors like turquoise, lime, yellow, and orange for a citrusy look. 56

Top Ten Mistakes People Make When Decorating a Home‌ and How to Avoid Them The art of home dÊcor can be creatively frustrating and not completely intuitive. Chances are you love a teacup, a vase or a statue, but how will it complement your home? Can you create a theme and stick to it? 58
T
here are so many tricks to the trade, but here are some common mistakes people make when decorating a home, and tips on how to avoid them. 1. Choosing the First Swatch of Paint You See Christopher Lowell, an expert on color and design who has his own show on the Fine Living Network says “Color is by far the thing that will do the most heavy lifting,” he says. But several people rush into stores and are daunted by the array of shades and colors and end up choosing a can of paint rather rashly. “Place your swatches on a surface you’ll walk by for at least a week, “ says Lowell. “You’ll automatically eliminate all other colors you dislike, except three or four.” Choosing a good color takes time, so indulge in prolonging the decision making until you are absolutely sure it will work for you. A good rule of thumb is – if you can wear it, then you can paint with it. If a color looks good on you, chances are you’ll be pleased with that color on your walls.
2. Using Too Much Bright Fabric
2
There’s nothing worse than having a bright blue silk pattern on your sofa only to discover a year down the road that the color and texture is so 1980's. “If you step back two feet, and squint your eyes, you will see if the texture works,” says Lowell. When you pick
upholstery, pick a solid color and texture.
1
Remember, bright fabric will draw attention to that particular texture: it will also easily date a room, so make sure your choice is classic, timeless, and gender neutral.
3. Fake Flowers And Plants Are A “No No.” But there are exceptions to the rule. The first impression when someone steps into your home is paramount. Surely, you don’t want them to notice the fake flowers in the basket or the plastic creeper on the wall? Most designers will agree that this practice is a “no no” but there are exceptions to the rule. If you invest in one beautiful plastic tree (such as a palm tree), and put fresh flowers in vases in the other rooms, people will assume all your foliage is fresh. There is so much maintenance that goes into keeping real plants looking pretty that having one fake fern is not going to do heavy damage. But remember “commercial flowers are usually grown with dangerous pesticides and chemically fertilized,” says Kimberly Rider, author of The Healthy Home Workbook. Growing organic flowers in your backyard is not only healthier, but it’s the cheaper option.

4. Using Too Many Prints. Don’t Make Your Home Look Like A Jungle You can replace the fifteen pillows on your sofa, or toss a few away; but having busy looking upholstery is not that easy to change. When you decorate a room, try to achieve a timeless look and choose solid prints.

paintings. A lot of the time, the scale of these objects is so small that you cannot even see them. “Practice the art of restraint,” says Lowell. Of course, there are ways to reduce clutter. Have a yard sale, put items up for sale on eBay, or join Freecycle.org and give away your largesse to someone who can benefit.
6. Not Utilizing Wall Space Enough
5. Having Too Many Objects on Display Most Americans are pack rats and pile up too many items in their homes over time. The rule of thumb is to toss anything
5
Imagine this scenario: there is a huge wash of wall space between two windows. Instead of covering this wall with several shadow boxes, pedestals with beautifully furnished vases, many people will use it for sofas and bookshelves. “Build up, not out” says Lowell. If you have a doll collection, small artifacts or a beautiful glasswork collection you want to show off, utilize the entire wall space – not just the base of the wall. Put creative shelves up, shadow boxes that showcase your collections, or use decorative containers to add punch to your walls.
7. Not Utilizing Windows To The Best Of Their Advantage. you haven’t used in over a year. “Only surround yourself with things you can connect with,” says Lowell. “Save only the things you can respond to.” Kimberly Seldon, host of the television series Design for Living, says, “when in doubt, err on the side of ‘too big’ and you won’t be sorry. You’ll instantly improve your style quotient.”
60
6
Your high school medals, thimble collection, cup and saucer collection and the entire glass menagerie need not and should not be displayed. Think of how they will coordinate with your furniture or large
7
Make the windows sing: use curtains, drapes, valances or blinds that really capture the style of the room. An expert from HGTV.com says, “Bed sheets and blankets are made for the bed, not the window. Window treatments not only finish off a room, they’re like jewelry for it.”

8. Having too Many Area and Floating Rugs Instead of having too many floating rugs, anchor your living room with the use of one key rug that people will not trip over. But make sure “your area rug is big enough for the space; otherwise it looks like you’ve put a placemat on the floor,” says Missy Scherzer, a member of the Society of Decorating Professionals. A rug should always cohesively harmonize with the furniture.
9. Not Using Lighting to Its Best Advantage We tend to ignore the most basic requirement: good lighting. Mastering the art of lighting will take years, but there are a few basic rules that people may well worth
BLUE SEDUCTION brings Antonio’s unique, alluring and masculine traits to the surface, while infusing them with the life and excitement of the contemporary man. BLUE SEDUCTION is a cool, refreshing fragrance that radiates a calm and relaxed vibe.
10 mastering. “Incorporate table lamps, sconces, lamps and library lights to create interest within a room and to draw attention to favorite collections and artworks,” says Seldon. Lighting should serve to highlight beautiful work of art, as well as make the room functional for reading and entertaining.
10. Hanging Artwork too High Don’t make people crane their neck to see your beautiful paintings. There are exceptions to this rule. For example “a double height space may require a piece of artwork (e.g. a painted canvas, photograph or tapestry) to hang above six feet,” says Seldon. “In such case, choose a very large image or something abstract, so its presence isn’t lost at the distance.”

Fall Into Spring: Perfect Bulbs To Plant Now 66
F
all is a great time to admire the season’s colorful mantle, and to prepare for the leafy blooms
of spring ahead. For the gardener who loves flowers, there is no more versatile and simple friend than the bulb.
A bulb is a prepackaged kit complete with its own stored food, says Barbara Damrosch in her vital book, The Garden Primer. When you plant a bulb in the fall, it will survive the hardiest winter, and rear its pretty little head once the snow thaws in the spring.
(of flowers),” writes Damrosch. “They are also among the most rewarding.”
You should take precaution that the bulb is not ravaged by wandering animals like deer and field mice, but chances are that little or no maintenance is required once you plant them into the ground till the time of flowering. “Hardy bulbs are among the easiest and showiest
Bulbs are perennial, and spring once a year. They have soft stems, and store much of their nutrition in the bottom fleshy part (which is actually a mass of plant tissue), where the bud is concealed. Sometimes you will see corms, tuberous roots and tubers classified loosely under the term “bulbs” but in reality, these are not bulbs but plants that stay underground and store food over the winter for root growth. The stems grow during the spring. As Damrosch notes, 67
Fall into Spring
a true bulb (like the tulip or daffodil) is actually a swollen underground stem that is comprised of scale like leaf bases. The food concealed in this stem will enable the bulb to survive long periods without food or water, which is why bulbs can magically sprout leaves and flowers after several months of winter.
Spring Bulbs These are planted in the fall and are the most common. If you don’t live in a very cold area, you may need to intervene and simulate a winter for these bulbs (i.e. refrigerate them until they become dormant) and bring them out again during the spring. Typically spring bulbs are grown in clusters and grouped with other perennials or annuals.
Plant Them Near Your House It’s a good idea to plant spring bulbs where you can see them since psychologically, the sight of blooming daffodils, crocus and hyacinths provides mood uplift and signals that winter is ending. “Daffodils are a mainstay in my landscaping,” says Chris Cipriano of Cipriano Landscape Design (plantnj.com.) “They have less of a turnover than tulips. You’ll loose roughly 10-20% of the tulips you plant each year.” It’s also a good idea to plant bulbs in clusters: beds of tulips and daffodils can be arranged in an artful and natural way so that they contrast each other in their color palette. Also, when you plant them in clusters, the bulbs naturalize and multiply. So soon you’ll find there are many more
daffodils dancing outside your window than the previous year…which is a lovely surprise.
Choose a Site Bulbs love the sun, so plant them in a nice warm spot. They grow well in almost any area except particularly shady spots (although partial shade is ok). Remember not to leave them in waterlogged soil because they will rot and die, writes Damrosch. Avoid rocky areas and grass patches studded with weeds and matted roots.
Buying Bulbs When you buy your bulbs, squeeze them and make sure they are not too soft. If there are more bulbs that are joined at the base (“double nosed”) all the better! Sometimes mail order companies will gift you more time and more varieties, and it’s really easy to sit back, point and click on the ones you want, and let them be shipped to you.
Planting and Storage Store the bulbs in a dark, cool place where the temperature is not freezing. When you plant your bulbs, the general rule of thumb is to make the hole thrice as deep as the bulbs. You can dig a hole and pile a few bulbs in them and cover them with soil and place bulb fertilizer at the bottom (4-5 bulbs will fit nicely into one hole). For larger bulbs, you may dig a larger hole, one per bulb. If you dig the hole deeper, chances are the bulbs will weather the frost and sprout regularly for years to come without being destroyed or be eaten by pests and animals.

The Best Bulbs to Plant in the Fall 1. Snowdrop
5. Tulip
These delicate earring-size white flowers are the first to sprout once the winter snow thaws. They can easily blend in with the snow unless you plant them where they will be noticed. If you mix them with other flowers that are brightly colored, you will do well. They usually self-sow and should be planted in late summer, early fall.
Far too many varieties of tulips exist to chronicle here, but suffice it to say that a garden in spring without tulips is like a crown of jewels with imitation gems. From the Parrot tulip to the Cottage, Rembrandt, Double Late and Fringed Parrot, the varieties of tulips are as many as shades of nail polish shades in a manicurist’s shelf.
2. Glory of the Snow
Tulips bloom early in spring if they are early-flowering tulips. You have to know this before you plant them! The Midseason tulips live long and grow up to 30 inches. The late flowering tulips include the Darwin tulips (not hybrids).
Perfect when paired with crocuses, they bloom shortly after. White, lavender pink, blue or purple flowers can dazzle with their star-shaped flowers and dainty, grass-like leaves. Plant them where they get some good, full sun and about 2-3 inches apart.
3. Narcissus (Daffodils)
Plant them in full sun or partial shade. An excellent web site to understand the different species of tulips is www. dutchgardens.com. But remember that deer love tulip bulbs, so be careful!
These are popularly known as daffodils, and these bloom in spring and come in several varieties including: trumpet, large-cupped, small-cupped, double narcissus and jonquils. Plant them in full shade or partial shade and at least 6 inches apart. “Deer don’t like daffodils at all, so they’re safe,” says Cipriano. So remember, if you live where there are plenty of deer, plant daffodils.
6. Hyacinth
4. Iris
This endearing annual rears its pretty colored head in the spring and is possibly the most favorite spring flower. From shades of purple, yellow, lavender and white, the largeflowered Dutch hybrids are popular, although not always early bloomers. These sprout from corms.
The Dutch iris sprouts from bulbs, and they are slender and delicate looking beauties that will complement any bulb cluster. You can find irises in shades of blue, purple, lavender, yellow and white! Plant them in early fall in the full sun and 4-6 inches apart.
Hyacinths are best grown with other flowers around them since their leaves can look coarse. But the blue, pink and white flowers are definitely fall must haves, so plant them about six inches apart and six inches deep.
7. Crocus
These are low maintenance plants and multiply by themselves and they don’t need to be divided. “Crocuses tend to come back year after year,” says Cipriano.

Fall into Spring
Design tips for getting the most out of your spring bulbs Combine flower bulbs with perennial for a succession of bloom. And there's a big bonus: the emerging perennial foliage hides bulb foliage as it yellows and dies off. Keep in mind the bulb color, time of bloom and height of the plants and consider which bulbs will mix best with nearby perennials and springflowering shrubs. Your combinations can be color echoes, such as the 'Ballade' tulip with bleeding heart, shown right, or color contrasts such as yellow daffodils with blue muscari.
Fall Winter Spring Summer
Concentrate your display where it will be most effective in spring. Lots of bulbs in one or two areas of the garden close to the house will give you more bang for your buck than the same number spread all over the garden. Avoid planting bulbs in rigid toy soldier-like rows. Generous "bouquets" are far more dramatic than a smattering here and there. Combine different bulbs by planting low-growing grape hyacinths and scillas in front taller tulips and daffodils. Try planting in layers. Place large later spring bulbs, such as tulips, daffodils or ornamental onions at the bottom of the planting hole, cover them with a layer of soil, then, on top, plant smaller early flowering bulbs such as scilla that require shallower planting. For more generous-looking groupings position bulb drifts in a triangular patterns in the garden with the point of the triangle showing towards the front.

ou’ve heard the saying, “a moment on the lips…forever on the hips” and screamed with ennui because you know how true it is. Unfortunately for most women, the fat padding around their hips and thighs is the most difficult to get rid of – and the bane of their existence. 72
Before women reach menopause, their bodies store fat in the hips and thighs to create a disproportional, pear shaped body that many would love to change. In olden times, women used the excess fat in their hips and thighs to survive in periods of famine and drought. These particular feminine genes were passed
1 The Inner Thigh Squeeze Works inner thighs Sit down on a sturdy chair and place a fluffy pillow between your thighs. Keep your feet firmly on the ground, and make sure they are at a 90-degree angle to your body. Use your thighs to squeeze the pillow and exhale. Don’t be afraid to put as much pressure as you can, and really work those inner thighs! Hold this position for a minute and try to inhale and exhale normally. Then part your thighs slightly and relax.
down from generation to generation, and these areas continue to remain pesky problems for women. No matter how hard some women try, it seems impossible to get rid of the fat stored on the hips and thighs because of genetics and body functionality.
If you do a lot of cardio, chances are that you’ll lose weight on your upper body first before you see results on your lower body. Cellulite Nothing but pure fat, cellulite shows up as dimpled 73
Slim Hips and Thighs
skin on even the skinniest of women. The fat shows up when the bumps in the skin made by too many fat cells in the body peek through the fibrous connective tissue in the body. When you have strong connective tissue, it will block the growth of cellulite. But weaker tissue will give way easily and allow pockets of fat to peek through. Poor circulation, bad diet and fluid retention can contribute to cellulite. Drinking a lot of water and exercise will help reduce it. An enormous flow of estrogen into the body can increase the appearance of cellulite. Yo-Yo Dieting Dieting may not be the key to the Promised Land, either. Recent research has shown that yo-yo dieting and less calorie intake is not necessarily the way to go because some people still continue to gain weight. Low calorie diets reduce the metabolic rate, and your body goes into “starvation mode, sometimes low enough to prevent further weight loss.
2 Seated Hand Push Works outer thighs and hips In the same seated position as previously, rest your feet on the floor with the knees bent. Place your palms on your knees. Keeping your palms and arms stationary, put as much pressure on your knees as possible. At the same time, push your knees against your palms (the two forces should counteract each other and work your outer thigh muscles). Hold this position for a full minute and try to breathe normally. Then relax your muscles.

The Effects of High Estrogen Unfortunately for women, estrogen plays a leading role in the accumulation of fat and the creation of cellulite. Women who tend to have higher estrogen levels will have more cellulite, and the hormone weakens the connective tissue, thereby causing more “dimpled skin.
But high estrogen levels alone are not sufficient to trigger cellulite to form. Many experts believe that you must also have poor blood flow to your connective tissue, and this tends to cause swelling. The swelling stretches the connective tissue apart, allowing the fat to bulge through. Another factor that plays a role in weakening the connective tissue is stress.
3 Seated Leg Raise Works fronts of thighs Remain in the seated position with your legs firmly on the floor. Rest your hands on the sides of the chair. Lift your left leg off the floor until it is stretched out at a 180 degree angle. Hold the position for a few seconds and then bring the leg down to rest. Repeat this move with the other leg. The longer you hold the leg outstretched, the more your muscles will work, but take care not to overdo it. 76
Exercise Exercise will help regulate the estrogen levels and also improve blood circulation (thereby strengthening the connective tissue). Blood circulation fights fluid retention, so the entire process is a good circle.
The Link Between Body Types and Health There’s no question: the more fat you have stored in your body, the more predisposed you are to having diseases like diabetes. Genetically speaking, there are two predominant body types. Some gain fat in their lower bodies. Others tend to gain fat in their abdomen.
4 Seated Bridge Works thighs and rear end As in the previous move, sit on the edge of a chair and rest your feet firmly on the ground, at a 90 degree angle to your body. Keep your palms to the side of the chair. Now lift your hips while maintaining a sturdy position with your hands as support. Lift your hips until they are 90 degrees to your lower legs, until the body resembles a plank. Hold this position for a full minute and try to breathe normally.
77
Slim Hips and Thighs
The heavy gut and excess fat around your belly is much more injurious to your health than having fat stored in your hip and thigh area, because belly fat is more prone to enter your bloodstream and clog your arteries. The pesky problem is that thigh fat is hard to get rid off!
There are so many women who run, climb and do Pilates 24/7 and still cannot get rid of their thigh fat. Persistence and the appropriate exercise for this area can help you. The exercises will help you get closer to your goal of having model thighs and hips.
5 Lie on your right side with head being propped up by your right hand. Try to keep your right leg straight or slightly bent. Rest your left foot on the ground. Slowly lift the top leg about 20 inches, hold for a few seconds, and then gradually lower it. You can do about 10-15 repetitions before switching sides. If you want to strengthen the hips even more, add a set of ankle weights.

6 Cool Down! Believe cooling down isn't important? The cool down is just as important as the warm up, and if you want to remain injury free during your workouts, it's essential. Why Cool Down? Cooling down stimulates recovery returns the body to a pre-work out status. During a strenuous work out your body goes through a number of stressful processes. Muscle fibres, tendons and ligaments get damaged, and waste products build up within your body. The Key Parts of an Effective Cool Down Now we know what the cool down does and why it is so important, lets have a look at the structure of an effective cool down. There are three key elements, or parts, which should be included to ensure an effective and complete cool down. They are; 1. Gentle exercise 2. Stretching 3. Re-fueling All three parts are equally important and any one part should not be neglected or thought of as not necessary. All three elements work together to repair and replenish the body after exercise!

OSTEOPOROSIS: THE SILENT THIEF: Imagine a disease that slowly eats away at your bones.
80
Quietly, but surely, it ravages the most durable substance in the body, until one day, a bone snaps. It’s the primary cause of hip fracture, and eventually, little things like coughing and sneezing can make bones break. This is why osteoporosis, which literally means “porous bones” is often called “the silent thief.” Osteoporosis is word you’re likely to hear if you are over fifty and a woman. It is a disease, and a severe one, that creates very weak bones that break easily. This doesn’t mean men don’t get osteoporosis. They do, but women are five times more likely to get it than men. The sad truth is: there is no way to cure it or even prevent it. But you can slow it down. Changing attitudes and improving technology are brightening the outlook for people with osteoporosis. Nowadays, many women live 30 years or more – perhaps a quarter to a third of their lives – after menopause. Improving the quality of those years has become an important health care goal. Although some bone loss is expected as people age, osteoporosis is no longer viewed as an inevitable consequence of aging. Diagnosis and treatment need no longer wait until bones break.
• Users of certain medicines for a long time, including those for seizure, asthma, arthritis or cancer Make sure you get your doctor to perform x-ray scans or ultrasounds to measure bone density, so you can determine if your bones are prone to osteoporosis.
No Bones About It Bone consists of a matrix of fibers of the tough protein collagen, hardened with calcium, phosphorus and other minerals. Two types of architecture give bones strength. Surrounding every bone is a tough, dense rind of cortical bone. Inside is spongy-looking trabecular bone. Its interconnecting structure provides much of the strength of healthy bone, but it is especially vulnerable to osteoporosis. “We tend to think of the skeleton as an inert erector set that holds us up and doesn’t do much else. That’s not true,” says Karl L. Insogna, M.D., director of the Bone Center at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn. Every bit as dynamic as other tissues, bone responds to the pull of muscles and gravity, repairs itself, and constantly renews itself. Besides protecting internal organs and allowing us to move about, bone is also involved in the body’s handling of minerals. Of the 2 to 4 pounds of calcium in the body, nearly 99 percent is in the teeth and skeleton. The remainder plays a critical role in blood clotting, nerve transmission, muscle contraction (including heartbeat), and other functions. The body keeps the blood level of calcium within a narrow range. When needed, bones release calcium. In youth, bone building prevails. Bone mass peaks by about age 30, then bone breakdown outpaces formation, and density declines, since the volume of bone remains about the same. The skeleton is like a retirement account for minerals, but in our skeletal “account” we can deposit
Note: osteoporosis has been described as a geriatric disease with an adolescent onset. So early prevention is really key to longevity and healthy bones in your mature years.
Reasons People Develop Osteoporosis • Genetics • Not enough calcium or vitamin D in their diet • Lack of exercise • Menopause
Who are the People Most at Risk? Anyone can get osteoporosis, but the people most at risk are: • Women, particularly those with a small, thin frame • Those with a family history of broken bones or stooped posture • Women who have Menopause before age 45 • People with an eating disorder history • People over 50 81

Osteoporotic fractures are the sign of the bankruptcy that occurs when too little bone is formed during youth, or too much is lost later, or both. “You’ve got to get as much bone as you can and not lose it,” Insogna says. “The most important risk factor for osteoporosis is a low bone mass.” “The upper limit of bone mass that you can acquire is genetically determined,” says Mona S. Calvo, Ph.D., a calcium expert in the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. “But even though you may be programmed for high bone mass, other factors can influence how much bone you end up with,” she says. For instance, men tend to build greater bone mass, which is partly why more women face osteoporosis. But there’s another reason. With the decline of the female hormone estrogen at menopause, usually around age 50, bone breakdown markedly increases. For several years, women lose bone two to four times faster than they did before menopause. The rate usually slows down again, but some women may continue to lose bone rapidly. By age 65, some women have lost half their skeletal mass.
Preventing Osteoporosis Prevention is better than cure, and with this disease, prevention can make a huge difference! Make sure you get enough calcium. Women under 50 years of age need at least 1,000 mg of calcium each day. If you’re over 50, you need more (around 1,200 mg each day). Also, make sure you get enough Vitamin D. Refrain from being sedentary and exercise each day. Simple exercises like walking or biking can help you prevent or delay the onset of this disease.
Avoid smoking or drinking Eat foods that are rich in calcium, like milk, cheese and yogurt. Green, leafy vegetables like kale, turnip greens, and tofu are excellent for your bones. Other good foods include fish (with bones), orange juice, and cereal.

Diabetes: A Disease on the Rise New evidence shows that nearly 21 million people in the States have diabetes and as many as 54 million have prediabetes. This places almost 25% of the population at risk for further complications and suffering. Furthermore, nearly 6.2 million people have no idea they have the disease. 84
The facts continue to stagger: in the year 2000 there were 171 million people worldwide with diabetes, this ďŹ gure is predicted to rise to 366 million in 2030, which is more than double.
Q&A What is diabetes? • It is a disease that changes the way your body uses food. The food you eat turns to sugar. The sugar then travels through the blood to all parts of the body. Normally, insulin helps get sugar from the blood to the body's cells, where it is used for energy. • When you have diabetes, your body has trouble making and/ or using insulin. So your body does not get the fuel it needs. And your blood sugar stays too high. Insulin helps change sugar into energy to keep you alive.
Is there a cure for diabetes? • There is no cure for the disease, and the resulting health complications from poorly controlled diabetes are what make it so frightening. • Consistently high blood sugar levels can, over time, lead to blindness, kidney failure, heart disease, limb amputations, and nerve damage. • In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults between the ages of 20 and 74, and it accounts for 40 percent of people who have kidney failure. • Cardiovascular disease is 2 to 4 times more common among people with diabetes, and is the leading cause of diabetesrelated deaths. The risk of stroke is also 2 to 4 times higher in people with diabetes, and 60 percent to 65 percent have high blood pressure.
What is the connection between women and diabetes? • Women with diabetes are more likely to have a heart attack and have it at a younger age. • Some women get diabetes when they are pregnant. • Women who have diabetes are more likely to have a miscarriage or a baby with birth defects. • Women with diabetes, according to recent studies are more likely to be poor, which makes it harder to manage the disease. • Most people with diabetes die from heart attack or stroke.
What are the types of diabetes? • Type 1 Diabetes: In this type, the body does not make any insulin. People with type 1 must take insulin every day to stay alive. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed mostly in children and teenagers 85
Diabetes: A Disease on the Rise
• Type 2 Diabetes:
• Do you get little or no exercise?
The body does not make enough insulin, or use insulin well. Type 2 accounts for over 90 percent of the cases, and is usually found in older and overweight adults. It is usually found in people over 45, who have diabetes in their family, who are overweight, who don’t exercise, and who have cholesterol problems. It is also common in certain racial and ethnic groups (blacks, American Indians, and Hispanics) and in women who had diabetes when they were pregnant. Treatment is diabetes pills and sometimes insulin injections, as well as diet and exercise.
• Do you have high blood pressure (130/80 or higher)?
Together the two types of diabetes contribute to about 200,000 deaths a year. Diabetes is also the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, blindness in adults, and lower-limb amputations.
Most people with diabetes do not notice the warning signs of diabetes. • Going to the bathroom a lot • Feeling hungry or thirsty all the time • Blurred vision • Losing weight without trying • Cuts or bruises that are slow to heal • Feeling tired all the time

S:7.375 in
• Do you have a brother or sister with diabetes? • Do you have a parent with diabetes? • Are you a woman who had it when you were pregnant. OR have you had a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds at birth? • Are you African American, Native American, Hispanic, or Asian American/Pacific Islander? If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist if you need a diabetes test.
A Disease on the Rise Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common in children and teenagers, but it primarily affects non-white Americans who are older and overweight. Hispanics, blacks and American Indians are almost twice as likely to have diabetes as nonHispanic whites of the same age. Because these and other diabetes-prone minorities are among the fastest growing segments of the United States population, and because Americans are increasingly overweight and sedentary, the incidence of diabetes in the United States is expected to rise to nearly 9 percent of the population by 2025. If you have diabetes, you should: 1. Watch What You Eat and Get Exercise There is no set diet for people with diabetes. You should work with your health care team to come up with a plan for you so you can eat the foods you love

by watching serving sizes. The “Nutrition Facts” label on foods can help, but note that many packaged foods contain more than one serving. Carbohydrates raise your blood sugar the most, so make sure you cut back on these. Keep active! Exercise at least 30 minutes a day most days of the week. Exercise helps your body’s insulin work better and also lowers your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol. 2. Use Medicines Wisely Sometimes people with diabetes need to take pills or insulin shots. Be sure to follow the directions and ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist what your medicines do. Also ask when to take them and if they have any side effects. 3. Check Your Blood Sugar and Know Your ABC's Help prevent heart disease and stroke by keeping your blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol under control. Check your blood sugar using a meter (home testing kit). This tells what your blood sugar is so you can make wise choices. Ask your doctor for an A-1-C (“A-one-see”) blood test. It measures blood sugar levels over 2 to 3 months. Talk to your health care team about your ABC’s: • A-1-C • Blood pressure • Cholesterol 4. Pay Attention to Low Blood Sugar and Know how to React People with diabetes may develop low blood sugar because their blood has too much insulin or other blood sugar-lowering medication or from not eating enough food. It is important to follow the eating and medication schedule your doctor has prescribed to avoid low blood sugar. Low blood sugar could make you shaky, dizzy, sweaty, hungry, have a headache, have pale skin color, have sudden mood or behavior changes, have clumsy or jerky movements, have difficulty paying attention, feel confused, or have tingling sensations around the mouth. The best way to take care of your diabetes is to make sure the levels or amount of sugar in your blood are near the normal range. This will make you feel better and help you stay healthy. Your doctor will tell you how often to check your blood sugar level. To do this, you will need to take a drop of your blood and place it on a special test strip. Then a device, called a blood glucose meter, reads the strip. This device measures the amount of sugar in your blood. Writing down this level, along with the time and date, will help you see how well your treatment plan is working. Remember: A person’s blood sugar level rises after eating any meal that contains carbohydrates or protein. Table sugar (also called sucrose) counts as a carbohydrate. Artificial sweeteners, such as saccharin, aspartame (NutraSweet), and sucralose (Splenda), do not count as carbohydrates or fats. They make food taste sweet. But they do not raise blood sugar levels and have little or no calories. 88

Pain Management
Power Over Pain By Angela Forsyth
T
here’s no doubt about it, hitting the gym is an integral part of feeling healthy and looking good, but sometimes a visit to the gym ends badly. You’re at the gym you’re feeling great, you’re patting yourself on the back before you’re done because you are so awesome for even being there… and then BAM. You’ve pulled a muscle or that old injury just flared up, uh-oh. Treating Injuries Bruce Williams, owner and head trainer at Shadow Valley Fitness in Rogers, AR offers some tips for dealing with the most common gym injuries. “In all cases of injury, the first thing you want to do is ice it,” says Williams, “this will help decrease swelling.” A common misconception is that some injuries require heat, but that’s not the case. “Although heat sometimes helps an injury feel better, it can actually increase the swelling,” says Williams. If you get injured, begin by treating the area with cold therapy as soon as you can. Continue to do so for the next 48 hours at least. If you can keep treating it a few more days after that, you will still see a little more improvement. Keep cooling the area until the swelling goes down completely. 90
A great cold therapy product to try is Cryo-MAX. It’s the only cold pack with a special technology that maintains the recommended therapeutic temperature of 36-40 degrees for 8 hours. Which is great because you don’t have to keep putting your cold pack back in the freezer, especially if you’re on the go. You can even wear it to work. Cryo-MAX cold packs come with their own support wrap that absorbs condensation and allows you to move around easily while applying relief. The temperature stays regulated, so you won’t have to worry about getting frostbite from too much icing or end up with melted slush running down your leg, as is the case with other brands. You can keep your Cryo-MAX cold pack on and continue with your day uninterrupted for up to 8 hours. Cryo-MAX cold packs are the recommended choice of many physicians, chiropractors, and sports therapists. They are sold at most major drug stores and are available in small, medium, and large to ensure the perfect fit for your injury. For more information go to www.modularthermaltech.com

What's Cozier than a Cup of Fall Soup?
T
here’s nothing better than snuggling up with a cup of hot, fresh soup on a chilly fall morning. We’re not talking about the canned variety, but a bowlful of ‘fresh from the stove’ goodness. Making soup is about as easy as making apple pie, and there are more recipes available for good warm soups than there are chefs in this world. Finding the perfect soup is of course, a personal preference, but the best tactic to employ is to use the meats and vegetables that are in season, namely: pumpkin, mushrooms, turkey, cranberry, cider, corn. Squash, corn kernels and pumpkins make very hearty, creamy soups. Once you have a grasp of the ingredients that are fresh and palatable, consider doing a variation with garnishes like parsley, orange juice, 92
lemongrass, cilantro, pear, cinnamon and apple. The best part about cooking hearty soups is that you can typically toss all the vegetables in one skillet and let them simmer for some time, while you are busy attending to more important matters! If you don’t have the time to cook soup from scratch, then consider using canned soup as a base and improvising. In the next few pages, you’ll find staple recipes for pumpkin corn chowder, a mushroom barley soup, and a tomato bread soup. Keeping the core ingredients the same, you can make endless varieties using the seasonings described above – all to suit your taste. Enjoy the hearty flavors of this season!
Pumpkin and Corn Chowder Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes Ingredients: 1 large onion, chopped 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 3/4 pounds butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1-inch pieces (4 cups) 2 1/2 cups fresh or frozen corn kernels (10 ounces; from 2 to 3 ears) 5 cups water 2 Tablespoons of Fresh Ginger, minced 1/2 Sweet Yellow Onion, sliced thin 4 Cups Vegetable Stock or Water 1/4 Cup Orange Juice 1 Cup Heavy Cream 4 Ounces Cheese (ideally Gruyere), grated, for garnish Garnish: cilantro leaves Preparation: Melt the butter over medium heat in a large heavy pot or in an oven. Add the two varieties of onions and cook until soft and translucent (about 10 minutes). Add the pumpkin, ginger, and corn. Cook for another 3 minutes. Add the stock or water, and orange juice. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook until pumpkin is soft and easily pierced with a fork (about 1 hour). Transfer mixture to a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. Transfer back to the pot and stir in the heavy cream. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Sprinkle Gruyere cheese over individual portions and serve with some hearty bread.

Soup's On!
Tomato and Crusty Bread Soup Prep Time: 30 minutes Cook Time: 45 minutes Ingredients: Four 3/4-inch- (2-cm-) thick slices peasant bread 1/3 cup (80 ml) olive oil 1 cup fresh basil leaves 3 medium cloves garlic, smashed, peeled, and sliced 1 medium onion, very finely chopped 14 large basil leaves, washed well and cut across into narrow strips 2 pounds plum tomatoes, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch (.5-cm) dice 4 cups (1 liter) chicken stock or garlic broth 2 teaspoons coarse salt, or less if using commercial broth Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Olive oil, for serving 94
Garnish: Fresh Parmesan Cheese (grated) Preparation: Heat the oven to 225째F. Place the bread directly on the middle rack of the oven. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes, just to dry the bread out; do not brown. Break the bread into large pieces. In a medium saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat until it is hot but not boiling. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes until the onion is translucent. Add the tomatoes and bring to a boil. Cook at a low boil for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the basil leaves. Stir in the stock, bread, salt, and pepper. Return to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring and breaking up the bread with the back of a spoon, for 15 minutes. The bread should break down to a mush. Remove the pan from the heat, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes. Serve with a few grinds of fresh pepper, and drizzled with some good olive oil and fresh Parmesan cheese.
Mushroom Barley Soup Prep Time: 30 minutes This soup is easy and quick to make and typically takes only 30 minutes. Barley adds texture and flavor to the soup (a mild nutty flavor). Cook Time: 15-30 minutes Ingredients: 2 onions, chopped 1 tbsp butter
Garnish: 2 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley Preparation: SautĂŠ the onion in the margarine in a skillet or medium pot, about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms; cook 5 to 8 minutes longer, until the mushrooms are lightly browned. Sprinkle the vegetables with flour; cook 1 minute. Add the broth, milk, barley, salt if desired, and pepper. Cover and simmer until the barley is tender, about 12 minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in the parsley just before serving.
1 Clove of Garlic 8 ounces mushrooms, sliced 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 2 cups Homemade Chicken Broth 1 cup skim or whole milk 1/4 cup quick-cooking pearl barley 1/2 tsp salt (optional) 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper 95

Q&A: CFS
life
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: More Than Meets the Eye If you feel tired all the time, don’t always assume you need that extra jolt from Starbucks. Various studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have indicated that between 1 and 4 million Americans suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
Unfortunately, there’s no single treatment for CFS. Doctors typically recommend a combination of drug and non drug therapies. So if you’re feeling chronically fatigued and cannot explain your symptoms, go get checked out and work a program out with your doctor to feel better.
Thaey are seriously impaired or disabled because of this disease, but very few (about half) have consulted a physician about their illness.
Here are some of the common symptoms of CFS:
CFS is actually a difficult and complex syndrome. If you find you’re sleeping a lot but still not getting enough rest, and you see that physical and mental activity actually is weakening you further, you may have CFS. In some cases, the symptoms can persist for years. Some experts disagree as to how to precisely define CFS but most agree that if these symptoms drag on for more than six months you may suffer from the disease. The disease can affect everyone (more women than men are affected). Studies have found that it’s actually quite common in people in their 40s and 50s.

Blue Jean Babies How to Find the Perfect Pair of Jeans
It’s the staple in your casual wardrobe and the easiest thing to stylishly wear when you dash out the door. Jeans have had a cult ollowing since they were invented by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis in 1873. Today, there’s hardly anyone on the planet who doesn’t own a pair.

They were used for overalls, but people complained the material chafed, so the creative inventor looked for other fabric options. He substituted a twill cotton cloth from France called “serge de Nimes” and this fabric later became known as denim. As ubiquitous now as water, denim has been cherished by cowboys to fashion models on catwalks alike, from Marilyn Monroe to Alexander McQueen. The first jeans came in two styles: indigo blue and brown cotton “duck.” Although denim had been in existence for a while in England (at least since the 1600's), it wasn’t until Strauss and Davis tapped the material’s potential in the late
1800's that its worldwide popularity spread like wildfire. It has also been the voice of key advertisements from Levi Strauss to GAP, and also the iconic piece of clothing in fashion shows from Sass & Bide to DIESEL. In the 1950's, jeans were used by teenagers as a way of separating themselves from the crowd, of radically defining themselves and looking more “adult.” Jeans today come in an overflowing number of styles and colors that will make your head spin. Faced with such choice, the average consumer ends up buying the tried and true pair or the pair that is the cheapest. Some of the most popular styles today include Skinny Jeans, Boot Cut, Flared, Straight Legged, Low Rise, Stonewashed, and Distressed. The most important thing – before you even think about buying a pair of jeans – is to know your own body type. Lisa Rudes Sandel, founder and creator of Not Your Daughter’s Jeans says, “Try them on! You should look first for fit. Are you comfortable in that particular jean? Does it look good on you? Does the jean make you look short or call attention to areas of your body that you would rather not feature?” Remember, just because Sienna Miller or Michelle Trachtenberg are wearing the jeans doesn't mean they will look good on you!

Tips To
Find Your
Perfect
Pair of
Jeans
It really helps to know what body type you are. “Pay attention to the length of your torso,” says Jeane B., image expert. So first, gauge your shape. Would you say that you are:
• Slim? Lucky you.
Slim body types can fit into most pairs of jeans with great panache. Low rise jeans will look great on you, from Crystal Pocket Jeans to Bootcut Jeans. But if you’re tall, high rise is best! “The longer your torso, the more pants ride up, so go a size larger if you need for comfort,” says Jeane B.
• Curvy? If you’re blessed with a curvaceous body, look for jeans that will highlight your curves. Choose the type that runs from your hips (not low rise!) through the knee, with maybe a flare at the leg opening. Stick with a wider leg if your torso is long and your legs are short. These will help “proportion” you! Don’t be afraid to experiment with the types of leg bottoms if you’re curvy. “’Oval’ hips look great in all widths of leg bottoms,” says Jeane B.
• Athletic? Low rise jeans complement the athletic body. Tapered legs are flattering and boot cut is also flattering. Choosing a traditional five pocket style that fits well but is not too clingy would be perfect for the athletic and toned body.
Finding the Right Color “Finding the right color of jeans depends on season and preference,” says Sandel. “Wear whatever complements your body type.” If you have a J Lo-type booty -- apart from thanking your mom for the genes - don’t wear jeans with a lot of pockets in the back. They will only create more volume. On the other hand, if you’re butt is a little thin, like Mischa Barton, then find jeans with many pockets. And remember, “just because it is in fashion doesn’t mean it is going to look good on you,” says Sandel.
TRENDS IN JEANS TODAY While we maintain that wearing what’s trendy is definitely not the only way to wear jeans, it helps to know what the stores will be carrying so you can be more educated when you shop. The High Waisted Jean Pop icon Madonna has started a wave of fans clamoring for the high waisted jean. Women are going crazy for a closer fit at the leg. High waisted jeans can come in different types of cuts, from straight leg, boot cut to skinny. Stars who have been sporting the high waisted jean include Katherine Heigl and Madonna.
The Wide Leg This style is insanely popular today and celebs from Kate Moss to Hillary Duff have been spotted wearing it all over the place. The wide leg balances the proportion of your body and makes your butt look shapely.
The Skinny Jean Everyone wants to slip into that skinny jean! Celebs from Blake Lively to Heidi Klum are fans of the skinny jean because it clings to their curves.
Colored Jeans Color is hot right now. From red to white to summer’s deep indigo colors, denim right now is anything but Stonewash colored. But colored jeans are not particularly easy to wear, particularly the color white, which tends to reveal excess weight. “Darker denims are going to slim the bottom half but if it is the right cut and size for your body type you can really where whatever color you prefer – even white,” says Sandel. Bright colored jeans as sported by celebs like Sienna Miller, Lindsay Lohan, Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba, among others. If you want a more flattering shade, go for the darker colors like indigo, red, olive and smoky blue.
Paying Top Dollar For a Pair of Jeans Department stores, from Macy’s to JC Penney’s, have a wide selection of jeanswear. But there’s no need to go overboard and spend a lot of money on jeans just because of the brand. Sandel says, “if it is made in the United States from imported fabric, it is worth more money than if the jean is imported. Imported jeans are not worth more than $50, regardless of what name appears on the label.”
The Bottom Line? Shop smart, and invest in a pair of jeans you know you’ll love and wear regardless of the current trends. Who knows, perhaps you’ll end up setting the trend yourself! 103

Yoga in Your PJs PHOTOGRAPHY
Jen Fellows
When the sun hits your face and you hear the birds chirp, you are at your freshest after a great night’s sleep.
Y
oga needs to be performed with a peaceful, calm and full mind. The body ideally needs to be supple when practicing yoga and the purpose of these exercises is to make your body less tense as soon as you wake up. The preferred type of yoga to perform in the morning is a gentle Hatha Yoga, with especially deep stretches. Bikram Yoga is more athletic, and your body requires some warming up. “I think especially when we wake up, the immediate activities we do are important,” says Dahn Yoga instructor Melissa Koci. “These set the tone for the whole day. Yoga can be very vigorous, but you can approach it gently, and it will prepare the body and mind for rest of the day.” Let your body start off on the right foot. Nanci Muriello, owner of Big Apple Power Yoga says, 104
“Traditionally, yoga was practiced first thing in the morning. It’s nice to do it early because your mind is a bit clearer, the “to do” list is not quite on top of the mind, and the experiences of the day have not kicked in yet. It is also a great way to develop a habit – a healthy habit – to wake up every day and just do it.” If you wake up and the first thing you do is to stub your toe, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. If, on the other hand, the first few minutes are positive, you are apt to face the world recharged and optimistic. Before You Do Anything, Breathe Deeply! There is nothing better than waking up and taking deep breaths. It energizes your body and promotes oxygen flow and improves blood circulation.
Sung Lee, MD, who is board certified in Internal medicine says there’s a palpable connection between deep breathing and the fight or flight response. When you’re in the “fight” mode, your blood pressure increases, and the sympathetic nervous system is stressed, trying to activate all its resources. Blood starts pumping into the system at the sense of danger or threat. This bridge of autonomic nervous system is involuntary. “When you exhale, you slow down the heart rate and pulse,” says Dr. Lee. “If you inhale, your pulse increases.” By taking slow, deep breaths, you’re actually helping to regulate that balance in a more effective manner. So why should you inhale and exhale the first thing in the morning? Intuitively, one would feel the body is at rest
during the night and the autonomic nervous system is at rest, right? Not so fast. There have been some interesting observations that heart attacks, for instance, occur in the morning. “We suspect that our systems get revved up in the morning and the sympathetics are actually geared up,” says Dr. Lee. This means, even though you feel calm in the morning, there is some data to suggest that the sympathetic branch is getting activated. Go with the assumption that it’s a good thing to regulate waking up and getting things set the right tone. Inhale and exhale! The following exercises are recommended by Melissa Koci, trainer at Dahn Yoga Center , www.dahnyoga.com.
Place Hands Over the Eyes The very first yoga pose is something you can do while you lie in bed or while you are sitting up in bed. Rub hands until they become warm, and take a few deep breaths and placing your hands over the eyes. The moment of waking up and how you wake up is important. This unique state of mind and body really prepares you for the day. A simple motion of placing the hands over the eyes will help you wake up and energize you. 105
Yoga in Your PJ's Rub Hands in a Sweeping Motion Over Body Sweep your hands up and down the body, including the sides, in one continuous motion (you may perform this seated or standing). If you are standing, keep a firm stance, plant your heels down and stand up straight. For a more rigorous “wake up call,” keep your hands under your armpits and let your body bounce up and down. The warmth on the body loosens the muscles and energizes them for more activity. This activity helps to wake up the body and brain. Studies have shown that vibration exercises, such as the one above, can help with delaying the onset of diseases like osteoporosis. “While it is difficult to prove these statements (like delaying the onset of osteoporosis through yoga exercises) because they are based on theory and speculation, as an MD I can say that keeping a certain flexibility and range of motion will allow you to do more weight bearing exercises,” says Dr. Lee. While extreme weight on your bones will definitely cause them to shatter and even break, studies have found that a certain amount of weight on your bones will cause them to be stronger. “The stretching exercises will be good for your joints; hence, good for your bones,” Lee continues. When astronauts (who are in excellent condition when they go up in orbit) return to the Earth, a lot of the time their bones are not as strong as they were pre-flight. This is because space lacks gravitational pull found on Earth, and the lack of this weight can actually make bones weaker. So if we don’t get some proper stress on our bones, they can demineralize and potentially become more prone to osteoporosis.
106
The Forward Bend Next, have a seat on the floor. One of the best stretches to perform at the crack of dawn is the forward bend. When you stay in a static pose, the muscles stretch, the body becomes warmer and blood circulates. When you do the forward bend, bend your spine, and pull the toes back. Bend forward as far as you can, and breathe deeply. Then sit up, so that the spine is straight again. After the body becomes warm, you can remain in that position for a few minutes. This position opens up the back of the legs. Keep your heels together, and straighten your back up. For a stronger stretch pull your toes back. Remember, the spine takes time to open up. This yoga is so simple you don’t need to try hard. Even though it’s not an aerobic exercise but its effects on your blood circulation are so profound.
107
Yoga in Your PJ's Facial Expressions Most people don’t think of harnessing the full potential of the human mind. Yoga increases the power of concentration and can harness the full potential of the human brain. When you sleep, the body is in a complete state of relaxation. Sleeping relaxes and literally stretches your face because the facial muscles are not tense. Sleeping is better than any facial cream and it makes the skin elastic and supple. These facial exercises are designed to give the effect of a good night’s rest, and are best performed with a mindset of levity. We recommend doing it with a full view of the mirror. Open your eyes and mouth as wide as possible, then squeeze them as tightly as you can. Go back and forth between these movements. As you squeeze all your facial muscles and blood vessels over time, you’ll notice your skin quality will improve tremendously. Your nose and eyebrows will really lighten up. Koci used to have a lot of dry skin problems, and after about three months of performing these facial exercises, her skin cleared up naturally. Even if you do one of these exercises every day for just a few days, the results you will see will motivate you to do more.
108
Why Should You Try Yoga? • Yoga helps stabilize the nervous system equilibrium • Your pulse and respiratory rate decreases • It lowers your blood pressure • The endocrine function in your system is normalized • The joints become more limber, more flexible • Your grip strength improves and your hand-eye coordination improves • Your body becomes energized and your endurance improves • Perception to pain is reduced • You become more balanced (physically and mentally) The full list of benefits is too large to list, but yoga has enabled countless people to regain strength and peace. The Sanskrit word “Aum,” which is typically chanted in yoga, is very calming and soothing. It represents godhead, or the whole of creation.

It's Never Too Early to Teach Your Kids About Stocks K
exact number of bills that add up to a certain tally, like $35 or $50.
It’s never too early to teach your kids about money, or about the stock market. If you have children aged six or older, get a head start on their financial education. Who knows, they might just get that white picket fence sooner than you think!
ING has a great web site for kids, www.orangekids. com, where the web page has a bright orange Earth that is sectioned off into games like “Republic of Savings” and “Investor Islands.” The kid gets to choose a guide (a cartoon icon) and then they embark on a fun-filled interactive adventure. Keep in mind that these games are best suited for ages 10 and up.
ids are smart, quick and more curious than most parents give them credit for. They are hungry for knowledge and have keen ears, and are able to memorize words and objects quicker than lightning1.
Start discussing family finances with them as soon as you think they are mature enough to follow what you are saying. For example, give them a set weekly household budget and ask them to calculate how much to spend on groceries.
Explain Simple/ Macro Concepts First Although it might seem tempting to embark on a rich and long discussion about options, strategies and dividends, start with the simple and basic concepts of investing first. For example, explain your kids the difference between short-term and long-term investing. Use real life examples as much as possible. For example, if your kid really wants a particular video game, then tell him or her that the way to get it is to gradually save up over a period of time. But if he or she wants to buy a Harley in ten years, then mutual funds or stocks are probably more fitting.
Point Them to Fun and Educational Web Sites A good place to start for kids from the ages of six through nine is www.younginvestor.com. The “Kids” tab gives you good basic reading material about the stock market, including articles like Understanding the Stock Market and the meaning of terms like “income,” “profit” or “dividend.” There are also links to neat online puzzles like “Buying Bigtime.” This puzzle shows a picture of a piggy bank and several dollar bills on a page. The kid’s task is to circle the 110
Teach Them About Risk and Reward Explain concepts like “higher risk, higher reward” in simple terms to kids. Tell them about Warren Buffett and his philosophy of buying strong companies and holding onto them for years. If you instill the motto “patience = profits” in kids at an early age, chances are they will stick to this principle in the long run.
Start a “Dummy” Portfolio You can encourage your child to start a “dummy” portfolio on Yahoo! Finance or another portal and monitor its progress during the year. Teach them to look at the correlation between news and stock price, and macro principles like the Gross National Product, National Debt and oil’s impact on the stocks. You can also start custodial accounts for your children under the Uniform Gifts to Minors Act or Uniform Transfer to Minors Act, depending on state laws. Another option is the site www.oneshare.com, where kids can literally own as little as one share in kid-friendly companies like Mattel or Disney. Remember, early advice on responsible money management is a lesson worth its weight in gold. Literally! Your kids will thank you for imparting them sound and valuable knowledge once they buy their first car with their own hard-earned cash. 1 Sources: Marketwatch; www.360financialliteracy.org

Why America Loves America You’ve loved her on ABC's hit series, "Ugly Betty." You’ve cried with her in the movie, "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." You’ve applauded her for winning the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series in 2007. Yes, America loves America Ferrara. Ferrara is the youngest of six siblings, and was born in Los Angeles to Honduran parents. Acting was an avocation at a very early age for her. At the age of eight, she was already in school plays. Her childhood was not typical of the Latina. While most Latinas attend several Quinceañeras (a celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday), Ferrara did not attend a single one because she grew up in a Jewish neighborhood. Real Women Have Curves Perhaps the best thing Ferrara has done for her fans is to console them that you don’t have to be a skinny size 2 to be a Hollywood star. In reality, she is a size 6 and proud of her curves. “I’ve tried almost every diet,” she says, "and the stress and the long hours she puts into Ugly Betty have helped her maintain her weight." “It’s so reassuring to have a woman heroine who triumphs with more than just what she has on the outside,” she says about her role in Ugly Betty. “She has more to offer the world than just a pretty picture. To me, the tragedy about this whole image-obsessed society is that young girls get so caught up in just achieving that they forget to realize that they have so much more to offer the world.” 112

“For me, it’s not about looking like a supermodel - it’s about feeling good about who I am naturally,” she says. ““You have to build a normal relationship with exercise and food.” And thankfully, the star does have a normal relationship to food, and has no desire to be ridiculously thin like Twiggy. In this era of Nicole Richie wannabes, hearing a perspective that applauds a woman's curves is refreshing. “Honestly, even if I wanted to be anorexic, I just don’t have what it takes,” says Ferrara. “After four hours of being anorexic, I’d be like, “It’s been four whole hours! When she won the Emmy in 2007, she said, “This award symbolizes all the wonderful blessings of the past year. I’m so happy and humbled to be on a show that’s not only fun … but is making a difference and inspiring people and changing the way we look at prejudice and diversity.” For Ferrara, landing the leading role in the popular TV series was a dream come true, and in keeping with her principles. “Ugly Betty is a unique ugly duckling story,” she says. “It’s not about her becoming a gorgeous swan; [rather] you’re waiting for people around her to realize she already is a beautiful person.”

What Spending Money Reveals About Your Teen no doubt about it...teenage girls today There's are spending more money than ever before and control a sizeable chunk of America’s retail market. They are spending a lot more on clothing, especially on labelconscious and fashionable brands. Items like video games, music and DVDs sell in large part because of the tastes of tweens and teens. But consumer items are not all they’re spending money on. Because of their part time jobs, allowances and the opportunity to make some extra cash on their own, teenagers are assuming more of the shopping responsibilities that were typically reserved for adults.
since personalities develop at a young age, it’s not surprising to see patterns of emotional behavior develop as teenagers start to manage their wallet.
The “Money” Personality People not only have a physical self and an emotional self, but also a “money” self. This “financial” self or personality surfaces each time that teen reaches into his or her pocketbook to buy a new bag, a dress or a makeover. There are several personality traits that can be gleaned from observing a person’s spending patterns.
Statistics reveal that one out of ten teens spend time in a financial transaction each week, whether it is spending money or earning it.
There is an inseparable bond between the basic emotions you have relating to money and the way you decide to spend, save, or invest in money. There’s nothing better than knowing thyself, right? Here is a list of the top “shopping personalities” your teen may have. See if you can spot your teen’s qualities:
Sixty nine percent of teenagers have savings accounts and seventeen percent own some form of stocks or bonds. And

once, especially if the items catch their eye. To deal with this problem, have the teen practice an “out of sight, out of mind” approach when temptation arises. The Fanatical Shopper If your teen is a fanatical shopper, you’ll notice he or she always checks the bargain bins and every item on sale at the mall. Emphasize that just because a few dollars are saved doesn’t necessarily mean the quality will be better. Waiting for sales at his/her favorite stores shows a sense of reserve. The Passive Buyer This personality never asks questions and literally hates shopping. He or she never has time to shop. Perhaps you can urge this teen to draw up a pros and cons sheet. The Avoidance Shopper This shopper goes to the mall to avoid the reality of life. He or she uses shopping as an anti-stress device. Channel his or her energies elsewhere if shopping becomes a crutch (sports might be a good option).
The Esteemed Buyer or the Label Conscious this teen loves designer goods and anything luxe with a label. He or she has a “show off ” personality, especially when the teen is in front of her peers. Emphasize value-based purchasing and to look for the value of the product itself, not the label. The Overdone buyer: This personality overdoes everything, even shopping. If he or she is buying something, then he buys two of it. The start to correcting this problem is cutting back and realizing that it is in fact, a problem.
The Bottom Dollar Since America is the cornerstone of capitalism, money can play a bigger role in your personality that you may give it credit for (no pun intended). The next time you go shopping, analyze your teen’s purchases before you plunk down your card. This may give you a better glimpse of his or her personality in a way that no shrink or best friend can. 117

S ometimes, squeezing in a few workouts during a jampacked week is like wearing spandex -- you'd rather not. So can you skip those sessions and just work out longer on the weekend? Heck, we’re not talking about giving up your daily 30-minute walks; but what about shelving those muscle-working, heart-pumping sessions? Can you save the sweaty stuff for the weekend? Not if you’re fighting high blood pressure, or lousy cholesterol counts (high LDL or low HDL), or extra pounds – especially around your waist. In other words, not if you care about how long you live. It’s burning 1,000 calories over four or five sessions – not one or two -- that sets you up for a longer, healthier life. Here’s how frequent sessions do their magic: Brisk walking, running, biking, or any aerobic activity lowers your triglycerides – unhealthy blood fats linked to high levels of lousy 120
LDL cholesterol – for 24 hours. Get active every day and your triglycerides will be progressively lower after 4 days. “Weekend warrior” calorie torching just can’t match that. Blood pressure is similar: A brisk walk lowers your BP immediately and for a few hours afterward. So the more frequently you do it, the closer you are to a happy and healthy 100th birthday. Admittedly, there is one exception: Weekend warriors may add years to their lives if they’re in virtually perfect health to begin with. That means they have NO risk factors for heart disease: no extra pounds, no smoking, no hypertension, and no less-than-great cholesterol numbers. But let's face it – few of us fall into that charmed space. We know you’re working on it! Keep at it!
