Why You Need a Brand Engineer

A brand is not just a logo. It’s not just a website, a colour scheme, or a tagline. While these are essential components, a truly enduring brand—the kind that withstands shifting markets, evolving consumer behaviour, and changing technologies— requires much more.

The brands that thrive long-term are built strategically, with careful planning and deep expertise. They don’t just ‘look good’; they perform. They attract the right audience, convey the right message, and, most importantly, build trust and loyalty. This is where the role of a brand engineer comes in—someone who understands every element that contributes to brand longevity and success.

The Key Elements of a Strong, Lasting Brand

According to a study by Lucidpress, consistent brand presentation across platforms can increase revenue by up to 23%. Yet, many businesses invest in isolated branding efforts—such as a new website or a refreshed logo—without addressing the full picture. A brand engineer ensures all the crucial elements are in place:

1. Brand Identity & Storytelling

Customers connect with brands that tell compelling stories. Research shows that 64% of consumers cite shared values as the main reason they form brand relationships. Your brand’s identity needs to be more than just visual—it should evoke emotion, communicate a purpose, and differentiate you from competitors.

3. Photography & Visual Content

Stock photos can’t replace authentic, high-quality imagery. Businesses using custom photography see up to a 45% increase in engagement. A brand engineer ensures that your visuals tell your unique story, reinforcing credibility and professionalism.

5. Social Media & Marketing Strategy

A brand isn’t just built; it’s nurtured. Businesses that maintain an active, well-planned social media presence grow brand awareness 2x faster than those that don’t. A strategic, consistent content plan is crucial for keeping your audience engaged and loyal.

7. Integrated Print & Digital Solutions

Why Work With evokeu?

2. User Experience (UX) & Digital Presence

A well-designed website is a necessity, but what sets a brand apart is its user experience. Studies show that 88% of users won’t return to a website after a poor experience. Seamless navigation, mobile responsiveness, and intuitive design are essential for brand credibility.

4. Video & Motion Content

With video content projected to make up 82% of all internet traffic by 2026, brands that fail to invest in highquality video storytelling risk being left behind. A brand engineer integrates video seamlessly into your strategy, ensuring it aligns with your messaging.

6. Mobile & App Development

The average consumer spends 4.5 hours per day on their mobile device. If your brand isn’t optimised for mobile or doesn’t consider app integration where relevant, you’re missing a key touchpoint with your audience.

Print isn’t dead—far from it. 82% of consumers trust print ads more than digital ads. When print and digital branding work together, the impact is exponentially stronger. A brand engineer ensures your offline and online presence are seamlessly integrated. We don’t just build brands—we engineer them. Over the last decade, we’ve expanded our expertise in response to real client needs.

• Clients asked for exclusive, high-quality imagery—so we brought in professional photographers

• They wanted video content—so we added a film crew to our team.

• They needed mobile app solutions—so we expanded our development team

• They required social media and marketing support—so we onboarded specialist strategists

• They wanted integrated print and digital services—so we built a team to deliver it all under one roof

A brand that stands the test of time is one that is strategically engineered, not just designed. If you’re looking to build a brand that performs, resonates, and endures—evokeu is your expert partner.

From 'temp of the month' to mayor!

HILLINGDON COUNCIL FIRMLY OPPOSES LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO BACK A THIRD RUNWAY AT HEATHROW

Attending the Hillingdon Business Awards last month was a true highlight for the Uxbridge Employment Agency team—not just for the celebration itself, but for an unexpected and heartwarming reminder of why we do what we do.

During the evening’s festivities, we were honoured and genuinely touched when the Mayor of Hillingdon shared that she had worked for us as a temporary employee back in the 1990s. Even more remarkably, she recalled how she had won our coveted "Temp of the Month" award—a moment that had arrived during a particularly challenging year for her. She spoke about how much it had meant to her at the time, but the biggest surprise? She still has the certificate proudly displayed on her wall today!

It was a powerful moment that reaffirmed a truth we’ve always known—temporary work is so much more than just a short-term stopgap. For many, it serves as a crucial stepping stone, offering experience, stability during transitions, or simply the confidence to take the next big step.

At Uxbridge Employment Agency, we’ve always believed that every placement matters. Our temps go on to achieve great things—even if public office isn’t the usual career path!

Following the recent announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, that the government is inviting proposals for expansion by the summer, the council reaffirms its intention to robustly fight any plans, just as it did with Heathrow Airport Limited’s previous proposals.

Any expansion of Heathrow would be to the huge detriment of the borough, with dire consequences for residents from increased noise and air pollution and new roads and infrastructure encroaching on or destroying homes and communities.

Expansion proposals at London City, Luton and Gatwick have all advanced with a combined increase in flights similar to a new airport. Expanding Heathrow on top of that would fill the skies over London, and beyond, and expose hundreds of thousands to harmful heath impacts and overwhelm an ageing public transport system.

The cost of services provided by the council to meet demand arising from the airport is already unfairly subsidised by Hillingdon

residents and this would only worsen with a bigger airport.

Cllr Ian Edwards, Leader of Hillingdon Council, said: “It’s hugely disappointing to see this destructive proposal back on the table once again and we will work with similarly minded local authorities and the Mayor of London to oppose these plans.

"The government’s desperate pursuit of economic growth through a third runway will disproportionately benefit Heathrow's owners and I am confident that we will be able to show that the proposed economic benefits to the country are a mirage.

“As a borough we have fought the spectre of these proposals for more than 25 years and we’ll continue fighting for as long as it takes to put our residents first.”

“It’s hugely disappointing to see this destructive proposal back on the table once again and we will work with similarly minded local authorities and the Mayor of London to oppose these plans."
Chistopher Tuthill (Operations Manager), Dana Balac (Deputy Manager), Cllr Colleen Sullivan, Lauren Tuthill (General Manager).

PAUL STRICKLAND SCANNER CENTRE

MARKS 40 YEARS’ SERVICE TO HILLINGDON

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, a milestone that underscores its vital contribution to the Hillingdon community and its pioneering role in medical imaging.

Since 1985, the centre has been at the forefront of diagnostic technology, transforming patient care and setting new standards in the fight against cancer and other serious illnesses. Earlier this year, the centre’s contribution to the community was recognised by Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce when it received a Highly Commended award in the 2025 Business Awards.

The centre’s origins lie in the vision of Dr. Paul Strickland OBE, a consultant radiotherapist at Mount Vernon Hospital. In the early 1980s, Dr. Strickland recognised the revolutionary potential of CT and MRI scanning. Undeterred by the economic climate, he launched a fundraising campaign, galvanising support and raising over £1.7 million – a remarkable achievement that surpassed the initial target. This enabled the purchase of both CT and MRI scanners, as well as the construction of the facility that would become Paul Strickland Scanner Centre.

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre opened its doors in 1985, becoming the UK’s first diagnostic imaging unit to serve both NHS

and private patients. This groundbreaking initiative brought cutting-edge technology to the heart of the community, enabling earlier and more accurate diagnoses, and paving the way for more effective treatments.

Over the past four decades, Paul Strickland Scanner Centre has remained committed to innovation, continually upgrading its equipment and expanding its services. Advances in technology have dramatically improved image quality and scan speeds, leading to more accurate diagnoses and increased patient throughput. The centre's specialisation in whole-body MRI scanning,

particularly important for patients with metastatic cancers, is a testament to its dedication to providing the best possible care.

Paul Strickland Scanner Centre's continued operation and its ability to invest in the latest technology is heavily reliant on the generosity of its supporters. Donations play a vital role in ensuring that Paul Strickland Scanner Centre can continue to provide a vital service to the community for generations to come. As the centre marks its 40th anniversary, it is a moment to celebrate its remarkable achievements and to acknowledge the vital role it plays in the lives of so many.

Founder and CEO of Pink Fluff HR Consultancy answers questions on why your business needs Human Resources and why outsourcing HR is the smart choice

Human Resources isn’t just for big corporations. Even small businesses need HR to manage their people. HR ensures your team is supported, motivated and working within the law. Here are some key reasons why HR is essential:

1. Compliance with Employment Laws: Employment laws in the UK are constantly changing. HR helps ensure your business stays compliant, avoiding costly penalties and legal disputes.

2. Efficient Recruitment and Onboarding: HR can help streamline the hiring process by creating clear job descriptions, advertising roles and managing interviews to ensure you get the right person for your business and avoiding discrimination throughout the process. HR also can support your business to ensure new employees are properly onboarded and engaged, that a bespoke contract for your business is put in place and employees are clear of the company’s expectations.

3. Employee Relations: A good HR function will work with you to handle disputes, work towards a positive workplace culture and ensures your team feels heard and valued. This is really important as sometimes disputes occur from simple misunderstandings or lack of clarity in expectations. HR is often parachuted in when there is a problem and its always more beneficial to be proactive with HR rather than reactive. Its important to keep the Human in HR.

4. Performance Management: HR helps establish systems for monitoring and improving employee performance, leading to a more productive and engaged workforce. Remember Happy People = Happy Profits

5. Growth and Scalability: As your business grows, HR provides the structure needed to scale without chaos. From policies to training, HR keeps things running smoothly.

Why should small businesses outsource HR instead of handling it in-house?

Outsourcing HR is a cost-effective and practical solution for small businesses that don’t have the resources to hire a dedicated HR team.

You can save on costs, as hiring, training and retaining an in-house HR professional can be expensive. Outsourcing gives you access to expert advice and services at a fraction of the cost.

You will have expertise on demand, as HR consultancies, like Pink Fluff, have a deep understanding of UK employment laws and best practices. You get immediate access to experienced professionals without having to train them.

Giving you complete flexibility, as outsourced HR services are scalable. Whether you need occasional advice or ongoing support, you can tailor services to your business needs.

Human Resources is crucial for any business, no matter its size. By outsourcing HR to a trusted partner like Pink Fluff, you’ll save time, reduce risk and focus on growing your business.

Managing HR in-house can take up valuable time that business owners could spend growing their business. Outsourcing saves you time and lets you focus on what you do best while leaving HR to the experts.

What HR tasks can I outsource?

Almost any HR function can be outsourced. Just to give you an idea, below are some examples:

• Recruitment and onboarding.

• Drafting employment contracts and policies.

• Managing employee disputes and grievances.

• Ensuring compliance with employment laws.

• Handling restructures, redundancies, dismissals, or TUPE transfers.

• Performance management and appraisals.

• Ongoing advice for day-to-day HR queries

How do I know if outsourcing HR is right for my business?

Outsourcing HR might be the right choice if you don’t have the budget for a full-time HR professional or you’re struggling to keep up with employment laws. You could be spending too much time on HR tasks instead of running your business or you want expert guidance without the overheads of an in-house team. Whatever your reasons, having an outsourced HR consultant is the most effective and efficient choice for many businesses.

WE WANT TO ENSURE HEATHROW’S SUCCESS BENEFITS THE WIDER HILLINGDON

ECONOMY’

Nigel Milton, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at Heathrow Airport, talks to Sarah Dale about being a collaborative and transparent leader and Heathrow’s push to be an “extraordinary airport fit for the future”.

More than £200 billion worth of goods is processed through Heathrow every year, which is greater than Felixstowe, Southampton and the Eurotunnel combined.

“Heathrow plays a role no other UK airport can,” says Nigel Milton, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at Heathrow Airport.

“Unmatched global connections from Heathrow enable exporters from across the country to get their world-class goods into global marketplaces to help grow their businesses. That’s why businesses large and small; Chambers of Commerce in every region and nation; and countless other organisations support and rely on us.”

Heathrow is also a key part of the local business community and is a member of Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce to strengthen connections in the area and increase opportunities for collaboration.

“Hillingdon’s diverse business network, from small enterprises to major corporations, plays a vital role in our region’s economy,” he says.

“Through the Chamber, we engage with local businesses, understand their challenges and collaborate on solutions. Events like the Heathrow Business Summit and Heathrow’s Lift Off Programme allow us to support local suppliers, create jobs and invest in the community, ensuring Heathrow’s success benefits the wider business ecosystem.

“The Chamber provides a platform for networking, knowledge-sharing and advocacy, ensuring we hear the voice of our local business community. SMEs are the backbone of the UK’s economy. Of the 1,100 businesses in our supply chain, 750 are SMEs, accounting for 60 per cent of our supplier base. Engaging with local suppliers and stakeholders through Chamber events has helped us expand our supply chain and drive economic growth.

“The Chamber also fosters a sense of community, aligning businesses around shared goals. Our membership reinforces our commitment to supporting local enterprises, job creation and sustainable development in Hillingdon.”

Nigel says that uncertainty is one of the biggest challenges – whether from economic

shifts, regulatory changes or evolving customer needs – as well as talent acquisition and retention.

“Strong business networks, like the Chamber, help navigate these challenges by encouraging idea-sharing and problemsolving,” he adds.

“Businesses must invest in skills development to stay competitive. At Heathrow, we focus on workforce training and apprenticeships to bridge skills gaps, ensuring businesses and colleagues alike can thrive in an ever-changing landscape.”

As Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer, Nigel believes in “collaborative and transparent leadership”.

“A strong team is essential for success, so I encourage open communication and idea-sharing. People perform best when they feel valued and informed, which is why we encourage a culture of engagement at Heathrow through meetings and informal discussions. Leading by example is also key – demonstrating commitment to innovation, sustainability and community engagement sets the tone for the organisation. Empowering colleagues to take the initiative and drive change ensures we continuously improve and adapt to new challenges.”

Nigel has some good advice for people starting out in business, a key one being to build strong relationships and networks, which he says is essential.

“No business succeeds in isolation –networks like the Hillingdon Chamber of

Commerce provide support, mentorship and opportunities for collaboration. Adaptability is also crucial, as markets and customer expectations constantly evolve. Listening to feedback, staying informed about industry trends, and being open to change will help a business grow. Finally, don’t hesitate to seek advice from experienced professionals, attend workshops and partner with others. Success takes time, and having a strong support system makes the journey easier and more rewarding.”

Heathrow’s role “is more important than ever” and the airport continues to make “significant” investments to keep up with growing passenger demand and as part of its vision of being an “extraordinary airport fit for the future”.

“There is a national mission and drive for growth,” he says.

“Improving living standards and creating opportunities will mean a better quality of life for every community.

“To deliver growth, the UK needs to boost exports, inbound tourism and inward investment. And show the world that the UK is open for business.

“Through partnerships with the Chamber and Hillingdon Council, we want to ensure Heathrow’s success benefits the wider Hillingdon economy. Whether through skills training, apprenticeships or infrastructure improvements, our goal is to be a world-class airport that drives long-term prosperity for local businesses and residents alike.”

“Through the Chamber, we engage with local businesses, understand their challenges and collaborate on solutions. Events like the Heathrow Business Summit and Heathrow’s Lift Off Programme allow us to support local suppliers, create jobs and invest in the community, ensuring Heathrow’s success benefits the wider business ecosystem."

Moving to a cheaper, greener energy system

A recent poll of small businesses showed that nearly two thirds (*) of Britain’s small business owners and senior decision makers think it’s important for them to reduce their business’s carbon footprint.

From those polled, 58% said energy efficiency is at the forefront of their decisionmaking when they are buying new equipment or appliances, with 57% prioritising buying goods from local suppliers and over half (**) saying being a sustainable business is increasingly important to their customers.

With running costs remaining a concern for many small business owners, 65% agreed that better managing their energy usage and costs is a priority for them this year. One small step small business owners can take to help with this is to get a smart meter installed. They are the next generation of gas and electricity meters that are being installed in small businesses and households in Great Britain, replacing traditional meters. When it comes to running a business, even making small changes and improvements can make a big difference, whether it’s saving money or being good for the planet. Getting a smart meter can help owners to understand exactly how much energy they are using

and help them to control energy costs. A smart meter can also help identify ways to reduce energy consumption – which is good for budgets, as well as the planet.

Whether you own or rent your business premises, you may be eligible for a smart meter, and if you are renting, but pay your own energy bills, you can ask your supplier to install one (***).

SMART METER BENEFITS

Smart meters have lots of benefits for small businesses, including:

• Accurate billing: smart meters measure energy usage in near realtime, so no more manual readings or estimated bills. This means you only pay for the energy you use, which can help with managing cashflow

• Control: the data provided by smart meters can give you more control over your business’ energy spend, helping you monitor energy usage and identify where cost savings can be made

• Access to historic energy usage data: small businesses with a smart meter can request free

access to 12 months of data from their energy supplier. This could help with budgeting and reduce bill shock. It could also help you plan for your next bill by identifying any trends or patterns in your energy use across the year As well as helping to give you more control of your business budgeting, smart meters are playing an important role in Great Britain’s energy infrastructure upgrade, as we continue to increase our use of cheaper, greener renewable energy sources.

The data smart meters provide is key to this innovation, and will enable us to buy, store and consume energy differently to the way we do today, gathering the information the energy networks need that will help the energy system better manage supply and demand. This will make the whole system more efficient and able to use more renewables such as wind and solar power.

So just by having a smart meter installed, you’re helping to create a smarter, greener energy system that will benefit Britain, the planetand you.

Smart meters are currently available, and installations are happening now. To find out if your business is eligible, contact your energy supplier or broker; search “Get a smart meter for business” or visit smartenergyGB.org.

“By helping them to take steps to be more efficient with their energy use, smart meters can have a positive effect on a business’ carbon footprint, as well as helping them save money.”

"Smart meters give you access to free and regular information on your energy use. Your energy supplier may provide this via an online platform, app, smart meter display or other data tools."

BRITISH CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE WELCOMES CHANCELLOR’S PUSH FOR GROWTH

The Chancellor’s vow to go “further and faster” than previous governments to deliver growth has been welcomed by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).

In a speech on 29th January, Rachel Reeves made a series of announcements including the confirmation of the Government’s support for a third runway at Heathrow Airport, a vow to build “Europe’s Silicon Valley between Oxford and Cambridge” and nine new reservoirs, and to redevelop Manchester United’s Old Trafford football stadium.

Shevaun Haviland, Director General of the BCC, said: "The Chancellor has laid down a clear marker on her intent to push for growth and these proposals can light the blue touchpaper to fire up the UK economy.

“Expanding our international airport capacity, investing in modern roads and railways, and rebalancing the planning system all send signals that the UK is building for a better future.

“These pledges will make businesses and international investors sit up and take notice. They can lift the gloom that has settled over the economy and give firms real confidence.

“We must also use this moment as a springboard to develop further ambitions around large scale infrastructure. Projects like Sizewell C, additional elements of Northern Powerhouse Rail, the Ely/Haughley rail junctions and the Rampion 2 windfarm must also be greenlit.”

She added that “well-planned, financially and environmentally sustainable” infrastructure programmes boost competitiveness, create jobs and generate lasting economic benefits for regions and the whole country.

“They increase capacity and reduce journey times, forge stronger business connections, expand labour markets and create opportunities for millions,” she said.

“They are a massive stimulus to their local economies.

“They support the obvious industries — construction, manufacturing and logistics — but they also feed into retail, hospitality for visiting workers and technical support.

“While projects on this scale may take years to complete their economic impact is much more immediate.

“They give firms involved in their supply chains real confidence to start planning and making their own investment decisions.

“But we must make sure the reality does not fall short of the promise. We must have action to back up the words and make sure this commitment sticks. That means getting on with these projects as soon as possible and delivering them quickly and effectively.

“Many firms will have the HS2 debacle in the back of their minds, so we need continued engagement from Government on problemsolving and support to keep these projects on track.

“With many businesses struggling with increasing costs, these proposals must also be backed up by business rates reform, better export support and an employment rights package that works for firms.”

“We must also use this moment as a springboard to develop further ambitions around large scale infrastructure. Projects like Sizewell C, additional elements of Northern Powerhouse Rail, the Ely/Haughley rail junctions and the Rampion 2 windfarm must also be greenlit.”

‘STRONG’ START TO 2025 FOR HRUC

Jo Withers, Chief of Business Strategy at Harrow, Richmond & Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC), talks to Sarah Dale about the relationship between Further Education and the local business community and the college group’s recent glowing Ofsted report.

Harrow, Richmond & Uxbridge Colleges (HRUC) have started 2025 on a high.

Ofsted visited HRUC in November 2024, its first inspection since HCUC (Harrow College and Uxbridge College) merged with Richmond upon Thames College to form HRUC in January 2023.

Not only was HRUC rated Outstanding in two key criteria – Personal Development and Behaviour and Attitudes – and rated Good overall, but the college group was also rated Strong in Ofsted’s Enhanced Skills Inspection, which is the highest rating.

And the accolades don’t stop there.

HRUC was also thrilled to be awarded Education Provider of the Year at the Hillingdon Chamber Awards in January this year.

Jo Withers, Chief of Business Strategy at HRUC, says having the “validation from Ofsted” was the perfect start to 2025 and shows that HRUC is working well to raise the aspirations of students, support their education and growth, and to form positive relationships with the business community ensuring our curriculum is providing the skills they need.

“We are really proud of our Ofsted report and delighted to be rated Good overall, within two years of the merger, and we are particularly thrilled that we were rated Strong in the Enhanced Skills Inspection, which highlights the strong contribution HRUC makes to meeting skills needed in the wider local economy” says Jo.

“Providing our students with meaningful, industry-related work experience is essential in preparing them for their future careers. We found opportunities for 4,000 students across 3,000 employers and Ofsted was particularly impressed at the breadth of industries we are working with.”

The Ofsted report stated: “Leaders work very effectively with a diverse range of employers and stakeholders to understand local and regional skills needs. They are proactive in responding to these needs. For example, leaders from the college led a feasibility study into the food and drinks industry with the Chamber of Commerce.

“Leaders have well-established partnerships that directly impact on the curriculum offer, including with Heathrow Airport. With the college, the Heathrow Inclusive Learner Partnership provides opportunities for learners with SEND (special educational needs and/or disabilities) to gain work experience in the airport’s supply chain. The new Aviation Generation course provides students with a pathway to careers in the aviation industry.”

The ambitious college group has almost 9,000 students aged 16-18, around 4,000 adult learners, 400 HE students and around 550 apprentices – across five campuses it continues to heavily invest in.

Expanding their apprenticeship provision is part of HRUC’s 2023-2030 strategic vision. “We’re really excited that we are finalising our apprenticeship growth plan, which will increase opportunities, in particular within both the food and drink and the aviation sectors,” she adds.

Being long-term Patrons of the Chamber and holding a strong position in the business community demonstrates that HRUC really values its membership.

“Our connection with the Chamber has been established for over 20 years. We represented Further Education on the Board in those early days and Keith Smith, our CEO, is now one of the Chamber’s advisors for Skills. Our membership also enables us to continue to work closely with our business community, developing opportunities to improve the skills in our region, support growth in the economy,

create a pipeline for the future workforce and connect with members locally to support their own training and skills development.” says Jo.

“We enjoy several benefits of being a Patron –including networking, opportunities to sponsor awards and events, being featured in this magazine, and building strong partnerships in the community. Crucially, these connections also galvanise opportunities for our students. The Chamber is brilliant at providing valuable work experience opportunities, for example our music and our performing arts students provided tech support and performances at the recent Hillingdon Business Awards and our media students took photos at the Chamber’s Expo.

“Through our high-quality provision we are training the next generation of industry professionals. With highly skilled and expert teaching staff, we have the ability to provide training for the priority industry sectors such as electricians and plumbers to bridge critical skills gaps.

As a hairdresser by trade, I was a dual professional for much of my working life in further education, as are so many of our talented staff. We are always seeking to recruit highly skilled dual professionals to bring their industry knowledge and expertise to life within the classroom and train our students to become the emerging and bright new talent. Plus, we also hold annual Industry Days for our existing teaching staff to refresh their technical skills and knowledge within their relevant sectors to find out what’s new and to ensure our courses remain industryrelevant.”

Jo advises new Chamber members to make the most of their membership.

“The networking is invaluable. There are so many opportunities to make new contacts and develop relationships which evolve and organically grow. There are fabulous resources and webinars to really tap into, nuggets of information that can help SMEs and being a member of the Chamber is being part of a vibrant business community.” she says.

For more information about HRUC, visit www.hruc.ac.uk and if you are interested in becoming a dual professional, please email news@hruc.ac.uk

“We are really proud of our Ofsted report and delighted to be rated Good overall, but we are particularly thrilled that we were rated Strong in the Enhanced Skills Inspection.”

‘IT MAKES SENSE TO LEARN FROM PEOPLE WISER AND MORE EXPERIENCED IN BUSINESS’

Hovig Yardim, Managing Director of TAG Drinks, tells Sarah Dale why he decided to sign up to GROWTH Hillingdon Business Support Programme.

Hovig Yardim is the first to admit he has not taken a conventional route to running his own business.

From an initial ambition to become a doctor after studying biomedical sciences at University College London to starting his own band, each bend in the road has taken him to the point five years ago when he launched TAG Drinks. He first discovered a love of business in the band – he led the business side as well as being the drummer. And he has always had a passion for science which ultimately led to him creating his own TAG Tea Latte, which is now patented, in his parents’ kitchen and led to his first business, called MASSIS tea, drawing on his Armenian background.

Opening a café just six weeks before the Covid pandemic hit which forced all hospitality venues to close and the UK to go into lockdown meant TAG Drinks had to close before it had even got properly established. But, like he says, if he and his loyal team can get through Covid, they can get through anything.

“Covid was a once-in-a-lifetime event and we always say if we can get through Covid, then nothing can take us down,” says Hovig, who used his experience working in a large coffee shop chain to hone his business model and add his personal twist.

TAG Drinks has 10 staff members, including Hovig, who are “fantastic” and the “heart and soul of the place and the business”.

“The team stood by me and we have become part of the community,” he adds.

“We make colour-specific cookies to raise funds for charity and our current one is Trinity, a homeless charity. We have established a great name and I have a great team.

“I love the name TAG, it stood out to me when we were looking at branding and I wanted something that everyone could pronounce as my first business was inspired by my Armenian background and people struggled to pronounce it.”

Hovig highly recommends the business support programme, run by Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, which he joined last year.

“I joined the business support programme for several reasons,” he says.

“My background is not in business or accounting. I have a very scientific mind, but that’s not how business works. You can always learn more and accept support. My toxic trait is timekeeping because I try and do everything. My to-do list has enough for three months for four people. Last year, I had a mental health difficulty and felt overwhelmed.

“The programme and having a mentor has helped me to set up a default diary and putting the [task management tool] Eisenhower Matrix into practice. I have got better at delegating and better at determining priorities and taking some time away from the business to spend time with my girlfriend

and family. I’ve learned how to diarise a plan for my week/month/quarter. It’s remembering that TAG was not built overnight so it is looking at logistical scheduling.”

Being a business owner is 24/7 but Hovig switches off by spending time with his family and girlfriend and playing his drums in his home studio.

“Music is something that I will always do; it’s my vice,” he says. “And it’s a great way to switch off because when you’re drumming you are focused both physically and mentally on only drumming.”

The hospitality sector has faced unprecedented challenges over the past five years and with the new Budget’s plans for increasing National Insurance contributions for employers, Hovig says the year ahead is going to be a difficult one to navigate.

But he counts himself lucky to have a great team and he has exciting plans on the horizon. TAG Drinks is located in a former bank and as such it has an underground vault.

“At the moment, it is the world’s most secure cup storage,” jokes Hovig, “but we have planning permission to convert it into a boujie after-hours venue where you can get glammed up and enjoy a cocktail.”

The café, which Hovig hopes will be one of many, is also undergoing a menu refresh but regulars don’t have to worry about missing out on their favourite cinnamon buns – they are on the ‘keep’ list!

FIRMS FACE INCREASING CYBER SECURITY RISK

The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill must be developed in full consultation with businesses, according to a report from British Chambers of Commerce.

It is warning that businesses face increased cyber security risks without stronger engagement with government.

Among the recommendations in the new report, the BCC is calling for ministers to:

• Carry out a cyber security awareness programme for businesses, particularly smaller firms

• Update the National Cyber Strategy

• Reform cyber security insurance to provide firms with better protection

• Address the shortage of UK cyber security professionals and support more training in all workplaces

• Engage directly with businesses to strengthen confidence in the UK’s digital infrastructure

Alex Veitch, Director of Policy at the British Chambers of Commerce said: “Cyber threats against businesses are growing, and without

coordinated action many SMEs will remain at risk. Our report outlines some immediate actions for ministers to engage directly with firms.

“There’s a lack of specialist digital security knowledge in many smaller companies. Government needs to take the lead and proactively engage with business to raise awareness.

“Businesses are keen to see the detail of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill in the coming months. The legislation must send a signal of confidence to the UK’s SMEs and not create unnecessary costs and reporting burdens.

“Cyber resilience isn’t just about protection; it’s about trust, innovation, and supporting the long-term growth of businesses.”

The report has been produced by the BCC’s Digital Revolution Challenge Group, drawing

on expertise from businesses of all sizes and sectors, academia and think-tanks.

It advises that the Bill, due to be published this year, must be progressed in close collaboration with the business community. This is to avoid creating “an unnecessary burden for businesses” and to ensure that firms are “actively incentivised to report cyber breaches or attacks”. This will then support the Government’s growth agenda by strengthening cyber resilience.

Changes to working environments have created more IT challenges for businesses. BCC research has revealed more than half of firms believed working from home left their computer systems more exposed.

The report highlights an urgent need to tackle the current shortage of cyber security professionals, and the digital safety skills gap facing over half a million businesses.

HILLINGDON BUSINESSES BOOSTED WITH SKILLS AND MENTORING

Hillingdon Council celebrated the success of its UKSPF-funded business support programme, with 47 local enterprises rewarded for completion at a special awards ceremony.

The GROWTH Hillingdon initiative, delivered by Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, has been helping to upskill budding entrepreneurs, startups and small and medium-sized companies in the borough, with 206 businesses signing up to receive one-to-one tailored support since June last year.

The ceremony, held on Thursday 6 February, at Heathrow Leonardo Hotel, celebrated the successes of participants, which has included companies landing new contracts, creating new jobs, opening new locations and winning industry awards.

The programme’s workshops and mentoring have supported businesses to get the most of online and offline marketing strategies to reach new customers, improve efficiency and productivity, and recruit and build a team with the right skills for success.

Speaking about her experience of the programme, Ruislip-based participant Kate, of Kate Hoyle Hypnotherapy, said: “It was really rewarding, it’s often difficult as a small business owner to find the time to look critically at your business, and the mentoring was a great opportunity to have someone provide a different perspective.

“It’s spurred me on for the year ahead to push my boundaries and continue to expand my business.”

Laura Harrison, Director of Opal Lily, based in Uxbridge, said: “The support was valuable in helping me understand what I want to do next with my business. I’m now hoping to grow my income streams.

“I want to develop an online course, but to provide me with the time and focus to achieve this I’ll be working with Brunel University and Uxbridge College to create an ongoing placement programme. It means students can learn new skills while helping me with the daily running of the business, especially during the busy summer months.”

The awards were presented by representatives of Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce and Cllr Steve Tuckwell, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, Housing and Growth, who also shared the Council’s plans for economic prosperity.

The event additionally provided the businesses with an opportunity to explore their next steps for sustaining growth and to network with likeminded business owners.

Cllr Tuckwell said: "We believe Hillingdon is the new business capital of London, with recent figures showing more businesses registering in the borough than anywhere else in the past year.

“We want to capitalise on this growth by working with our partners, like Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce and those large multinational companies we're proud to have in the borough, to support smaller businesses unlock new skills and opportunities as well as offering tailor-made support.

“It’s been great to hear about some of the success stories delivered as part of this programme. Helping businesses to sustainably grow and thrive boosts the local economy and creates more well-paid jobs for local people.”

The council is using £2.5 million UKSPF funding to drive economic growth, attract investment and provide a boost to local communities.

"We believe Hillingdon is the new business capital of London, with recent figures showing more businesses registering in the borough than anywhere else in the past year."

SPOTLIGHT ON HAYES WELL-CONNECTED AND WITH GREAT POTENTIAL

Hayes has two claims to be the best-connected town in west London. The opening of the Elizabeth Line has brought it within 20 minutes of the centre of London –and added to the great benefits of being close to the M4, M25 and Heathrow Airport. Now, as we enter the age of artificial intelligence it is becoming a prime focus for data centres. Ark and Colt have one each under construction and more are planned.

Located at The Old Vinyl Factory, the Nest is a popular climbing wall which has a gym and fitness classes. In addition, there are gyms at Energie Fitness in Blyth Road and More Energy at the Hayes Campus of Uxbridge College in Coldharbour Lane.

A Property 'hot spot'

For the second year running property agents Benham & Reeves have named Hayes as one of the capital’s top property hot spots. Described in their 2024 annual survey as “a regeneration powerhouse” its position has been reaffirmed for 2025 as a great place to invest. It has specially highlighted the award-winning Barratt London development of 1500 new homes on the former Nestles factory site.

This is one of many residential developments which are expanding the population and bringing new opportunities for business. The multi-million pound mixed use scheme at the former EMI factory has led the way. World-famous for the production of billions of vinyl records it was also the place of life-changing

inventions – stereo sound, airborne radar and CT scanners all started in Hayes. Now known as The Old Vinyl Factory it has brought the restoration of early 20th century listed industrial buildings together with the provision of new residential blocks. The commercial units offer a unique and iconic location for business and an ongoing review of unlet floorspace initiated by Hillingdon Council will chart the way forward.

It is not only private developers who are keeping busy. With financial backing from the Mayor of London the Council is carrying out the total rebuild of its old Austin Road and Avondale Drive Estates. When completed there will be an addition to the overall number of homes – with a mixture of those for council rent, leaseholders, shared ownership and private sale.

Quality facilities

The Town has some high-quality facilities already in place The Botwell Green Sports & Leisure Centre offers a wide range of health, fitness and fun activities for the local community. These include two swimming pools, a sports hall and a gymnastics hall which is home to the Borough of Hillingdon Gymnastic Club.

Botwell Green Library is in the same complex and is the most well-used in the Borough, Besides books it has a fantastic array of community events, the prizewinning Teen Room and a well-used study area. The YMCA youth centre in Station Road provides a range of youth activities and also has a dance studio and a gym. Located at The Old Vinyl Factory, the Nest is a popular climbing wall which has a

gym and fitness classes. In addition, there are gyms at Energie Fitness in Blyth Road and More Energy at the Hayes Campus of Uxbridge College in Coldharbour Lane.

Leading the way in education

Hayes has a solid educational base. The College is now part of HRUC – Harrow, Richmond & Uxbridge Colleges – and a recent Ofsted report has described it as a place to "enjoy learning, develop and succeed". It is graded “Strong" for Skills, “Outstanding” for the behaviour, attitudes and personal development of its students with a “Good” rating for its educational offerings, leadership, and management.

As well as giving access to high quality education and training the Hayes Campus has two dance studios, a theatre, a restaurant where students prepare and serve meals to the public and hair and beauty salons.

Located at the Old Vinyl Factory, the Global Academy is a leading University Technical College sponsored by the media and entertainment group Global and the University of the Arts London. It caters for 400 young people looking for the skills to start a career in the creative media industry.

Hayes has an excellent range of local schools including those of the Anglican,

and

This reflects the very diverse community of which people are proud. The town centre has places of worship for just about every major religion and in addition to being focal points for prayer they play an important role in meeting the needs of their communities.

Retail & Events

The shops in the town centre also reflect the ethnic diversity. The branches of high street stores sit side by side with numerous small independent businesses which provide a wide range of food items to meet local needs.

Catholic
Sikh faiths.
Hayes Canal Festival

The Hayes Town Business Forum is active in supporting these businesses and each year it organises a treasure hunt for local children with over 350 entries and 60 prizes donated by shopkeepers.

Another successful annual event is the Hayes Canal Festival which last year attracted over 3000 visitors. It is a great way of bringing people together and the towpath of the Grand Union Canal also provides a pleasant green walking and cycling route through the town.

Because of its industrial past Hayes is often seen as a dense urban area but it has some delightful green spaces surrounding

the town centre. One has an open-air gym and a BMX track and another is home to the superb Hillingdon Cycle Circuit.

Regeneration & Innovation

The redevelopment of Hayes after many years of decline is being driven by the opening of the Elizabeth Line. The Old Vinyl Factory has the potential to play a crucial part in economic regeneration and growth. The construction of major data centres by Ark and Colt and the joint project with Brunel University of London for an Innovation Centre puts the area at the forefront of the drive to modernise the British economy. By way of contrast, the

presence of the expanded West London Film Studies and the Global Academy also gives it a cultural role

This is unfinished business and the council has recently engaged a research team from the university to learn more about what the public would like to see in Hayes in the future. It's very much a question of 'watch this space' to see how Hayes develops over the years to come.

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE

LESSONS FROM MAGENTA SECURITY

Sustainability is no longer a “nice to have” – it is an essential business practice. Companies that fail to embed sustainability into their operations risk higher costs, regulatory pressures, and losing clients who demand ecoconscious partners. At Magenta Security, we have successfully integrated sustainability into every aspect of our business, proving that being green is not only good for the planet but also for business growth.

Here’s how businesses, regardless of their size or industry, can implement meaningful and practical sustainability initiatives.

1. Set Clear Sustainability Goals

A successful sustainability strategy starts with a clear objective. At Magenta, we aimed to achieve carbon zero status by 2025—and we surpassed this goal, achieving full carbon neutrality in 2022 without relying on offsetting. Our plan was built around measurable targets, including reducing energy consumption, cutting emissions, and transitioning to ecofriendly alternatives.

Businesses should identify specific sustainability goals aligned with their operations, whether it’s reducing waste, using renewable energy, or lowering carbon emissions. Setting achievable milestones ensures accountability and progress.

2. Invest in Green Technology

One of the most impactful steps towards sustainability is embracing green technology. At Magenta, we have made significant investments, including:

• Electric Fleet & Solar Charging: We transitioned our company vehicles from hybrid to fully electric and installed solarpowered charging stations, ensuring our fleet operates on renewable energy.

• Energy-Efficient Facilities: We replaced traditional lighting with LED systems, cutting electricity consumption by 75%. An upgrade to our heating system further reduced energy use by 20%.

• Digital Transformation: By going paperless, we save over 150 trees annually and have drastically improved operational efficiency. Even small changes, like switching to LED lights or using energy-efficient appliances, can make a measurable difference

3. Engage Employees in Sustainability Efforts

Sustainability is a collective effort, and staff engagement is critical. At Magenta, we encourage employees to participate in green initiatives, such as:

• Contributing ideas on improving workplace sustainability

• Participating in community-led environmental projects

• Encouraging digital workflows to minimise paper use

When employees see sustainability as part of the company culture, they are more likely to support and implement eco-friendly practices in their daily work.

4. Work with Sustainable Suppliers

A business’s environmental impact extends beyond its own operations. That’s why we have worked closely with our supply chain to promote greener practices. We only partner with vendors that adhere to strict sustainability policies, ensuring that materials, services, and logistics contribute to our green goals.

Businesses can review their supply chain’s sustainability credentials, prioritising suppliers that use recycled materials, energy-efficient processes, or ethical sourcing.

5. Be Transparent and Share Your Progress

Sustainability efforts should be measurable

and publicly communicated. Magenta is a proud participant in the Carbon Database Initiative (CaDI), where we openly share our carbon reduction data. Transparency fosters trust and encourages other businesses to follow suit.

Companies can start small by reporting sustainability milestones in annual reports, website updates, or social media posts. Demonstrating progress attracts customers and partners who value corporate responsibility.

6. Sustainability as a Business Growth Strategy

Embracing sustainability isn’t just about ethical responsibility—it’s a competitive advantage. At Magenta, our carbon-zero status and green initiatives have won us new contracts, strengthened client relationships, and led to industry recognition, including the Security and Fire Sustainability Champion Award.

Customers, investors, and stakeholders increasingly prioritise businesses with strong environmental commitments. By adopting sustainable practices, businesses can enhance their reputation, improve efficiency, and gain a competitive edge.

Final Thoughts

Magenta Security’s sustainability journey proves that businesses can be both profitable and eco-conscious. By setting clear goals, investing in technology, engaging employees, collaborating with suppliers, and maintaining transparency, any business can make tangible progress towards a greener future. Sustainability is no longer optional—it is the key to long-term success.

CABLE CHALLENGE GETS PUPILS

CONNECTING WITH RECYCLING

Hillingdon Council is encouraging school pupils to find and collect old or unused electrical cables from around the home and recycle them as part of a drive to promote the reuse of valuable metals and further reduce contamination.

Thirty-four primary and secondary schools are taking part in the council's free Cable Challenge which launched on Monday 10 February, where they will compete to see who can recycle the most cables in a month. Each school has been given a recycling bin, and children will be encouraged to search their homes for old and unwanted cables and, with their parents’ or carer’s permission, bring them to school and drop them into the dedicated bin.

The winning school will be determined by how many kilograms of cables they’ve collected by 14 March and receive £100 towards purchasing teaching materials for the classroom to help them learn more about repairing and reusing items, rather than throwing them away.

TAKING CARE OF

WASTE

Millions of old cables are binned each year, but many contain precious metals such as copper, which can be extracted and recycled into other things.

Cllr Eddie Lavery, Hillingdon Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environment, said: "Modern technology often relies on cables that can stop working or get replaced and so many end up forgotten about in drawers or cupboards.

“We’re encouraging children to find and recycle as many old cables as possible from their homes, while learning about the valuable materials they contain and the importance of reusing them.

“In turn, this helps to improve the council’s overall recycling rates and so I wish the

schools the best of luck and look forward to seeing who comes out on top next month.”

The council also has pink recycling bins for small electricals in each of its libraries, for residents to drop off items like cables, old phones and hairdryers, or you can visit one of our Civic Amenity Sites in Harefield or West Drayton.

GOOD CONTACTS MEAN EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO GOOD BUSINESS

Tony McGowen, Founder and Director of A1 Lifestyle, tells Karen McLauchlan why building relationships is crucial for opening doors to the best entertainment experiences around the world.

Were you a thwarted Swiftie when it came to bagging tickets for the superstar’s Eras tour last summer? Or has it always been your dream to sit track side at the F1 or walk the red carpet?

Then Tony McGowen is a good man to know. With decades of experience in the ticketing and hospitality industry, his ‘little black book’ is quite frankly, enormous.

And as Founder and Director of A1 Lifestyle – he’s an expert in helping people enjoy the best gigs, events and performances around the globe.

Uxbridge-based A1 finds people and businesses the best seats in the house.

And its offering is huge – from the Superbowl to the West End, the team can help with VIP access, exclusive restaurant bookings, tickets for gigs and shows and private jets, limos and helicopters.

“There’s not many events we say no to or can’t get a ticket for,” says Tony.

“We have a proven ability to source tickets, passes and VIP access to all types of events.

“Red carpet film premieres, fashion shows in London, Paris or New York, film festivals and exclusive parties – we have done them all.”

But it’s not all about experiences where money is no object.

“It’s not just high end clients,” says Tony, “we work with people across the globe at all price levels.”

While many of us may have spent frustrating hours online attempting to get our hands on much in demand tickets, it’s years of experience and a vast network of contacts

that enables Tony to get his clients through the door.

“We work differently to some other firms as we actually own the tickets or stock we hold,” explains Tony. “We pay license fees to agencies and venues to be able to have access to tickets for an event and have good relationships with contacts.

“But there are still constraints, especially those events where demand is incredibly high.

“We do a lot of packages for hospitality and travel. But price wise, we work with people from all backgrounds.”

Starting his early career in marketing, Tony was recruited by a newcomer to the UK ticketing industry – Get Me In - which was eventually bought by Ticketmaster and where Tony also spent time working.

He then branched out on his own.

“I like to freewheel and think on my feet,” he explains. “I like to put plans into place quickly so it suited me to work for myself.”

A1 rebranded in 2023 and now has 14 staff as well as new business partner, Matthew Evans. It also operates theatre ticketing website seats4shows.co.uk

“We’ve grown exponentially over the last 16 months, it’s been a whirlwind,” adds Tony.

“We’ve attracted lots of new clients and our growth globally has been phenomenal.”

The success comes after some incredibly difficult years as Tony – and the entire hospitality industry – navigated the Covid pandemic.

“The business was devastated,” he says. “For two years every venue across the UK closed and the industry was completely crippled.

“It was a hard time and I had some very dark days. But the business managed to hang onto its allocations and connections with venues.

“And when everything reopened the response was incredible. People wanted to get out and do things. Demand was through the roof.

“Things have levelled off now. The cost of living rise has had an impact, people aren’t as frivolous as they were.”

He says Brexit has also changed the way people attend events with European clients now waiting for a gig local to them rather than paying a higher price to travel to the UK.

Much of A1’s business is in the UK - more than half - with the USA making up around a third of its client base and the rest across Europe.

Tony admits he has a formidable contacts book, which is key to his company’s success.

But he says that doesn’t just apply to him.

Building relationships, including those with the Chamber of Commerce, is vital to every business if they want to be their best.

“Our success is based on our network,” he explains, “the bigger and stronger your network the easier it is to succeed in any industry.”

“We have a proven ability to source tickets, passes and VIP access to all types of events. “Red carpet film premieres, fashion shows in London, Paris or New York, film festivals and exclusive parties – we have done them all.”
Tony McGowenFounder

A1 is a member Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce and Tony says it’s important to have a local network.

“If there’s something I need for the business I’d always prefer to go local and get it done with someone ‘down the road’ with a small business,” he says. “There’s real value in that and improving the local business community.”

The ticket industry is currently facing change. The Government has launched a consultation and plans to cap the price of resale tickets.

“I am pro-legislation,” says Tony, “but the Government needs to be advised correctly and not just by people who are anti-resale. It must be a balanced argument.

“I am speaking to Members of Parliament about the issue.”

Looking to put something back into the community, A1 has also forged links with The Feathers Association, a charity which provides opportunities for children, young people and communities through informal education, sporting, cultural and recreational activities.

Donating to its charity auctions, Tony says it’s an organisation he is “hugely proud” to be involved with.

As for the future, Tony and his team continue to make those must-have tickets attainable for clients.

“Every day is different,” says Tony, “and that’s why I like what I do.

“I love picking up the phone, talking to people and meeting new people. It’s all about experiences and it’s great to be able to get people the very best seat.”

SIMPLIFY EMPLOYER

COMPLIANCE NOW AND PROTECT YOUR GROWING BUSINESS

As an early-stage or emerging company, time and cost pressures are often part of the journey. Despite these challenges, B P Collins’ employment team advises that investing in solid employment practices from day one is essential.

Compliance with employment legislation not only fosters a positive and productive workplace culture, but it also reduces the risk of costly legal disputes and enhances your company’s appeal during due diligence for future investment.

Your people are a key consideration at this stage in the development of your growing business and becoming an employer who can attract the right people, nurture talent and retain expertise will be fundamental to your success.

What does a growing business need to be an attractive and legally compliant employer?

B P Collins has created a ten point checklist to see if you need to rethink your approach to employment.

1. Are your employment contracts robust and secure?

2. Have you got appropriate employment policies and procedures that will help to avoid uncertainty?

3. Have you got safeguards in place to prevent former employees from leaking company information to competitors or taking your clients?

4. If you need outside help and expertise to grow – do you have agreements in place with external contractors and non-exec directors?

5. Is your business fit for purpose - has it got the right employment structure to cope with growth?

6. Are you up to speed on the latest employment legislation?

7. Are you aware of your health and safety obligations? If not, specialist advice should be sought.

8. Do you have a data protection policy in place for your employees?

9. Have you conducted Right to Work checks?

10. Are you up to speed with your obligation around paying your employees and pension auto-enrolment?

If you’ve answered no to any of these questions, you could be at risk of legal disputes in the future.

What can B P Collins’ employment team offer your growing business?

To support your business from the outset, B P Collins LLP offers a straightforward solution - a basic employment contract template for both senior and junior employees, available for a fixed fee. This can be the perfect starting point as you build your team.

We’re also happy to discuss your specific business needs around recruitment, employment policies or training, and identify any areas where more tailored agreements

may be required. We can also introduce you to accountants or health and safety advisers if required.

With B P Collins’ expertise, you can confidently manage your workforce, mitigate risks, and ensure compliance, allowing you to focus on what matters most - growing your business. You

BALANCING FAMILY LIFE AND A BUSY WORK SCHEDULE: WHY WORKPLACE WELLNESS MATTERS

busyness. We wear long working hours like a badge of honour, juggle never-ending to-do lists, and stretch ourselves thin trying to be everything

The reality is that work and life outside of work are deeply interconnected. When one is out of balance, the other suffers. If work is overwhelming, stress seeps into home life. If home responsibilities feel unmanageable, it impacts focus and productivity at work. The key to thriving in both areas isn’t about doing more - it’s about being intentional with our time, setting boundaries, and understanding what wellbeing means to us, as an individual. Because spa days and fancy restaurants

The Myth of Work-Life Balance

The idea of ‘work-life balance’ suggests that these two aspects of life should be perfectly equal, but the truth is, they rarely are. Some weeks work demands more of us, and other times, we need to focus on family. Rather than striving for a perfect 50/50 balance, we need to practice allowing for needs and demands, whilst appreciating the natural flows requiredcreating a life where both work and home can coexist more naturally.

This requires appreciating yourself and what you are trying to achieve. Ask yourself: What do I need right now? What do I want right

now? Answering these questions can help quieten the ‘noise’ of intense demands we place on ourselves and shift the focus from just being busy to being intentional with time.

Practical Strategies for Managing Work and Home

1. Set Clear Boundaries – As a business owner, it’s often challenging to define clear work hours and stick to them. It can be easier to define clear ‘break’ hours to give your mind rest.

2. Time Blocking – Assign specific blocks of time to work, family, and personal activities. This ensures that everything has its place and reduces the stress of multitasking. Be intention about starting your days with things that fuel you and squeeze ‘drainers’ in between to keep up your energy.

3. Prioritise Self-Care – You can’t pour from an empty cup (yet everyone tries to!). Remembering that ‘self-care’ can mean taking a brisk 10 minute walk, having a cup of tea away from the desk or remembering to drink enough water throughout the day. It is your basic needs – the rest is luxury (which is always more enjoyable when we have taken care of ourselves!).

The Bigger Picture

At the heart of it all, success isn’t about ticking off endless tasks - it’s about how you feel while creating the life you want. So ask yourself: is rushing through it all, without joy, really worth it? Because the truth is, slowing down - even just a little - could be the very thing that changes everything.

ONE CARE IT LIMITED:

CELEBRATING TWO DECADES OF INNOVATION AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

As One Care iT Limited (OCIT) approaches its 20th anniversary, it stands proudly at a pivotal juncture in its history. Based in West London, the company has made significant contributions to the IT solutions landscape, earning a reputation for excellence across diverse sectors.

The year 2025 has already begun on a high note, with OCIT being honoured at the 12th West London Business Awards, where it won the coveted title of Innovation SME of the Year and received a Highly Commended award for Community Investment.

What Makes OCIT an Award-Winning Organisation?

A Versatile Approach to IT Solutions.

Under the strategic leadership of Company Director and founder Pally Randhawa, OCIT has effectively segmented its services to cater to a wide array of client requirements. The company operates in three primary segments: Managed Services, Consultancy for the Construction Industry, and Sustainable IT Solutions.

Managed Services

OCIT’s Managed Services division is dedicated to delivering comprehensive IT support tailored for businesses of all shapes and sizes. This service encompasses a broad spectrum of essential offerings designed to ensure seamless IT operations, including:

• IT Help Desk: A dedicated support platform to swiftly address troubleshooting and technical issues.

• O365 Management & Protection: Facilitating easy access to Microsoft cloud servers, whilst securing your users and data.

• Network Infrastructure: Ensuring you have the correct wired and wireless infrastructure in place to suit your applications.

• Cyber Security: Implementing robust security measures to protect sensitive information and maintain system integrity. This includes equipping staff with tools to recognise and foil malicious attacks, such as Phishing.

• Cloud Computing: Offering a scalable Desktop-as-a-Service solution that allows users to work from anywhere in the world securely whilst adapting to the changing requirements of your business.

• VoIP, Broadband, and Mobile Solutions: Providing efficient communication systems that enhance collaboration.

• Hardware Purchasing and Installations: Streamlining the procurement and setup of cutting-edge technology to keep businesses competitive.

A noteworthy feature of OCIT’s Managed Services is its rental program, allowing clients to obtain necessary equipment without a hefty upfront financial investment. Instead, clients can opt for a manageable fixed monthly payment plan, making it easier for OCIT’s clients to access technology essential for their success.

Consultancy for the Construction Industry

Recognising the integral role of technology in project success, OCIT has developed a specialised consultancy service tailored for the construction sector. This service aids building owners and developers in determining the IT requirements critical for contemporary developments.

Key focus areas include:

• Quality of Wired and Wireless Network Infrastructure

• Communication Resilience

• Readiness and Access

• Door Access and CCTV

• Main Equipment Rooms

These are some of the vital components for the successful execution of any construction project, and OCIT's expertise ensures that clients do not overlook these critical elements.

Sustainable IT Solutions

In today’s world of heightened focus on sustainability, OCIT has made remarkable strides in promoting environmentally friendly practices through its Sustainable IT Solutions.

Whilst LEDs have achieved some milestones, the industry has been lighting up workspaces

with a ‘copy and paste’ method for the last 30+ years. However, OCIT has made LED Lighting, an IT task making systems sustainable and adaptable in both internal and external environments.

Their award-winning initiatives include:

• Low Voltage DC LED Lighting Systems: Pioneering the installation of advanced lighting solutions that cut energy consumption by 50%.

• Replacement of Traditional Wiring: Modernising infrastructure by replacing 230v mains cables with low-voltage network cables, thereby reducing costs.

• Centralised Drivers: Utilising low-level centralised LED drivers in place of traditional above ceiling units, leading to a 75% decrease in both implementation costs and maintenance, along with a 15% reduction in cooling requirements.

OCIT’s sustainable solutions adhere to significant benchmarks and disciplines, including Building Information Modelling (BIM), Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), WELL Building Standard, BREEAM, and REEB. Such adherence underscores OCIT’s commitment to not only meeting but exceeding industry standards in sustainable practices.

Community Engagement and Investment

OCIT’s recognition for Community Investment reflects its unwavering commitment to positive change within the community. Through active engagement with local

charities and support for non-profit organisations, including the Hillingdon Chamber of Commerce, OCIT extends beyond essential IT services to bolster community growth and development. This dual focus on business success and community support distinguishes OCIT as a leader in the industry.

A Message from Pally Randhawa:

THE LAST WORD Managing Director, TAG Drinks

HOVIG YARDIM

Founded in 2020, TAG is an independent café in Eastcote, celebrated for its high-quality tea, coffee, and freshly made food.

Home to the patented TAG Tea Latte, TAG redefines tea culture with innovative flavours. Committed to sustainability and community, TAG actively supports local causes and businesses. In 2025, TAG won Hospitality / Leisure Business of the Year at the Hillingdon Chamber Business Awards, further cementing its place as a beloved local hub for quality, connection, and exceptional experiences.

What was your first job and what was the pay packet?

At the Pinn Medical Centre – temp receptionist when they were testing being open on weekends. Generous pay of £12.50/hr, about 18 years ago!

What do you always carry with you to work?

My phone. It has my to-do list of to-do lists on it!

What is the biggest challenge facing your business?

Cost increases since we opened 5 years ago. In some cases, basic raw ingredients have increased by +300%. If prices reflected cost respectively, a flat white should cost around £8.10!

If you were Prime Minister, what one thing would you change to help business?

Abolish business rates or at least include something of benefit directly to the business – bin/recycling collection or similar.

What can you see from your office window?

In store, nothing – the windows are frosted. From my office at home, a beautiful view of fields and nature.

If you could do another job, what would it be?

I wouldn’t. I love what I do, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I’d pick this again.

As a businessperson, what are your three main qualities?

Resilience / determination – this is crucial to picking yourself up and carrying on.

Optimism – I’m more of a realist, but we must be optimistic in this game. Hope is what drives us.

Flexibility / ability to adapt – COVID saw to this, and destroyed businesses that didn’t adapt. The world is ever-changing, so change with it or be left behind.

What was your biggest mistake in business?

Going into business with someone else. Saying that, I learnt so much that I wouldn’t be who or where I am without the current business growing from the ashes of the previous one.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Plan, plan, and plan. Start at the end, and work backwards to today, with achievable goals and milestones. And make decisions – don’t sit on stuff…just do it.

Who do you most admire in business?

Anybody who has made it past the 10-year mark. It’s a phenomenal achievement to sustain a business for that long.

Plan, plan, and plan. Start at the end, and work backwards to today, with achievable goals and milestones. And make decisions – don’t sit on stuff…just do it.
