We’ve previously looked at some of the history and background of KMG, our Hemel office and at our place in the wider RSK Group, with the myriad of services on offer. In this third article, I’m going to look at the kind of projects that KMG deals with on a daily basis, and the team that makes it all happen.
tructural Engineers design all kinds of structures – walls, bridges and tunnels. Multi-storey car parks. Skyscrapers and bungalows. Churches and changing rooms. Sports Stadia and club houses. Factories, power stations, warehouses, aircraft hangars, office blocks, apartments, supermarkets and corner shops. Most structural engineers have specialisms. For KMG, this is cold storage and distribution, and more recently, life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. We mainly work in commercial and industrial property – but for a variety of different sectors and different types of construction. Our work can vary from designing a new build property to refurbishing and extending an existing building – in these eco-conscious times, building re-use is the most environmentally friendly form of construction project. Some examples of our work: COLD STORES AND DISTRIBUTION KMG has a long track of cold storage and warehousing design, particularly temperaturecontrolled environments for the food industry. Chill and cold storage involves significant capital investment for our clients – our knowledge of key factors is critical to delivering problem-free facilities and optimising investment return. We have worked on projects throughout the UK and Ireland, for well known clients in the food services industry.
PHARMACEUTICAL AND LIFE SCIENCES We undertook the civil and structural engineering design for an extension to an existing pharmaceutical production building in Denmark. This consisted of a reinforced concrete basement, a column free production area on the ground floor with a plant room on the first floor level. The plant room was designed to fit within the deep 25m span structural steel trusses that span the width of the building. A particular challenge was making provision for a 30 tonne freeze dryer within the ground floor area and making sure it could be safely moved across the ground floor to its final position. KMG was also tasked with reviewing the construction stage design carried out by a Danish contractor.
HOTEL AND LEISURE – LUTON HOO HOUSE, BEDFORDSHIRE KMG is proud to have carried out the civil and structural engineering of the restoration programme by Elite Hotels transforming a historic but run-down country mansion to a hotel with modern leisure facilities. Luton Hoo mansion house dates back to the late 18th century and sits in around a thousand acres of parkland and gardens.
Along with extensive renovations to the original mansion, a new 3 storey extension was added for guest accommodation and facilities including a swimming pool, as well as a golf course and spa.
