nov/dec 2022 home for the holidays Lowcountry Oyster Roast Thanksgiving Feast Grand Tree Lighting
There’s no place like home for the holidays, and Berkeley Hall’s festive traditions welcome everyone to celebrate the best of the season!
In this issue, we showcase what holidays in the Lowcountry mean to members Julie and Jason Norcross and their family as they share some of their favorite holiday traditions on pages 6-7.
Our Thanksgiving Week Celebration kicks off in true Lowcountry style with our Oyster Roast on the Verandah, the perfect lead-in to Thursday’s magnificent Thanksgiving feast, and on Saturday the season truly comes to light at our Annual Tree Lighting on the Mall!
You can toast to the good life at our BHC holiday events, from our heartwarming Brunch with Santa, to our Taste of Chanukah Dinner, along with our Ladies Ornament Exchange, Candlelight Christmas Dinner and a very special New Year’s Eve Dinner.
We’ll even make it a little easier to raise a toast, with our BHC Signature “Lord Berkeley” Cocktail, along with a special Stock Your Cellar wine event, perfect for holiday entertaining.
As we wrap up the year, we’ve welcomed a good number of new members to our Berkeley Hall family. Our positive momentum has garnered increased home builds with close to 50 homes presently underway and nearing completion.
There’s never been a better time to invite friends and family to the Club to experience all we have to offer and our wonderful Lowcountry lifestyle.
As we gather for the holidays, I’m reminded how thankful I am to be part of such a giving and caring community. I look forward to celebrating the best of the season with all of you!

CONGRATULATIONS TO MIKE ANDERSON ON HIS 21ST ANNIVERSARY AT BERKELEY HALL
When it comes to Berkeley Hall, Mike Anderson embodies the best of our team’s continued commitment to excellence. In his role with Community Grounds, he exem plifies the dedication and detail required to provide the overall best Berkeley Experience.
While we all know the grounds are
meticulously cared for, we often don’t see the attention and hard work behind the effortless beauty of our Club’s landscape. That’s in great part to Mike’s longstanding knowledge of our community ground’s needs.
This October, Mike celebrated his 21st anniversary at Berkeley Hall. Although it may be more accurate to say we celebrated him, in honor of all he’s brought to the Club. We surprised Mike with a celebration luncheon, thanks to the help of Michael Holt, Director of Community Grounds. With many fellow colleagues, he was

“We love celebrating the holidays,” shares Julie Norcross. “It’s always a busy time of year, especially with two teenag ers, Maya and Maddox!” Not to mention two great pups, Julie’s real estate career and husband Jason’s busy medical practices.
When it comes to favorite holiday traditions, it really centers around family get-togethers and visitors coming to BHC. “Being together and celebrating with good friends and family is what we cherish most,” adds Julie. “Here in the Lowcountry, we naturally entertain a lot, and when we were looking for our new home, Berkeley Hall had everything we hoped for.”
“Just being on the water makes us feel at home, waterfront living really fits our lifestyle,” added Jason. As boaters, their waterfront home is the perfect spot. Outdoor living with nightly sunsets over the marshes and the river frame their back porch areas and pool views.
“Easy access to jogging and walking paths make it so easy to get outside and enjoy nature. Not to mention the amazing golf and friendly atmosphere,” says Julie. “And basketball half-court for Maddox and his friends!”
Being close to school and friends for Maya and Maddox, Julie’s work with Daniel Ravenel Sotheby’s International Realty, and Jason’s close proximity to his Bluffton office, make it easy to make the most of family time, and enjoying the holidays at Berkeley Hall.
As an adult reconstruction surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery, Jason (Dr. Norcross) is one of the nation’s top experts in the field of robotic-assisted surgery, with practices in Beaufort, Hilton Head Island and Bluffton.
Wishes for the New Year? “That’s easy,” say Julie and Jason. “Get on the water more and living this amazing Lowcountry lifestyle of ours.”

ocktailing at the Club showcases some special mixology, especially when it comes to serving up our signature “Lord Berkeley” cocktail. The inspiration of talented BHC bartender Clint Moore and Elijah Paulsen, F&B Manager, like all good cocktails, it has a good story. Of course, there are many more served up at the Verandah bar, but this one says it all!
The Story
Lord Berkeley, having spent time as a young man in Barbados, was fond of its classic English-style of rum, the specific
choice of the British Navy best distin guished by its navy strength proof. With the distinct notes of bananas and caramel, well-paired with passionfruit and lime as natural, native flavors. The anise flavorforward Peychaud’s Bitters from New Orleans offers a layered lightness as the passionfruit bears the burgundy warmth of the Berkeley Hall logo crest.
Served up by bartender Clint Moore on the Club’s Verandah, this fruit-forward cocktail is the ultimate “Berkeley Experience!” Come try one.
Berkeley Hall is named after Lord Berkeley, one of five British generals awarded land holdings in America by the King of England.
BHC’s Signature Cocktail: Lord Berkeley
2 oz Smith & Cross London Traditional Jamaica Rum
1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
.5 oz Passionfruit Syrup
2 dashes Fee Foam
Give it a Dry Shake, Wet Shake. Strain & Spritz with Peychaud’s Bitters.
CocktailMenu
BHC’s Cocktail Menu is as enticing and adventurous as the places it takes us to.
“Our Carolina 76 is a twist on the French 76,” shares Elijah Paulsen, cocktail menu co-curator with bartender Clint Moore.
It’s also the same year that SC declared its independence, and one of our top bar requests!
Then there’s the Buffalo Carré. This twist on the New Orleans Vieux Carré uses pecan-infused Buffalo Trace bourbon in place of rye, for a well-balanced classic that members appreciate to the fullest!
Stop by and take some time to peruse our well-crafted Cocktails Menu.

“The Nature of Fragile Things” by Susan Meissner
Meissner (The Last Year of the War) spins an excep tional story about an Irish immigrant who lands in San Francisco shortly be fore the 1906 earthquake. After spending two years in New York City, Sophie Whalen, 20, answers a news paper ad from widower Martin Hocking of San Francisco, who is seeking a wife for him and a mother for his daughter.
Sophie falls head over heels for Martin’s five-year-old daughter, Kat, having given up having a child of her own. But Sophie learns all is not as it seems when a pregnant woman named Belinda Bigelow shows up on her doorstep hours before the earthquake, looking for her husband, James. Upon seeing a picture of Martin, Belinda recognizes him as James. Mas terfully crafted twists and turns abound, as a federal Marshall questions Sophie about Martin’s disappearance. The plucky Sophie (who is hiding a few secrets of her own) captivates from the first page.

e had a busy start to the Fall Season, and despite Hurricane Ian playing havoc with a few of our early events, overall, we’ve enjoyed some wonderful Lowcountry conditions.
Our new Fazio Putting Green has been open for almost two months now, and we’re very pleased with how it has taken. The expansive

The Fall/Winter season here at Berkeley Hall is a lot of fun, and although it is a shorter season than the Spring, we’ve got plenty of great golf lined up.
It was another great turnout for the 2022 Berkeley Classic. The event was played October 13-15, and we had 9 flights compet ing for the honors. The weather was fabulous for all three days, and we had some great scores across all of the flights. The 9 flight winners moved on to the Championship shootout, and it was the pair of Wes Goldberg and Mike Siers that came out on top! Congratulations to Wes and his guest Mike!

Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technol ogy at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individu alize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because
everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”
Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.
“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”
DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to.
DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think cor rectly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.
DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.
“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learn ing Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”
NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022 19 We
want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual.
I
believe everyone has their own
unique swing DNA. We
work with what you have, and enhance that and make it
better.

ON THE GREENS
all in the Lowcountry is nothing short of amazing. While August and September had more than their share of rain, these fall to winter months have followed with some of the best weather you could ask for. Thus, the allure of the Lowcountry, especially to golfers.
With more than 20 inches of rain in August, and a bit more in early September, there was a six-week stretch where we received 60% of the rainfall for our year. As September turned to October, temperatures have been cooler than average and the Bermuda Grass is already starting to lose its color. Our soil temperatures are running roughly 12 degrees below normal, which is a big factor on when the Bermuda Grass begins to grow dormant.
Our Lowcountry weather has created ideal conditions for the South Course overseed. Cooler temperatures at night and full sun, dry days have allowed us to control the moisture and grow the Ryegrass. In addition, the golf course has not gotten too wet during the process.
By the time you read this, the
Ryegrass on the South Course will be at our winter height, and we expect great fairway conditions throughout the winter and spring.
One challenge we face heading into winter is that dreaded weed poa. The combination of the wet cloudy August and cooler September and October was ideal for poa seed germination. While we are already seeing some earlier germination, we completed early pre-emergents this year. These preventive measures should work to mitigate any early poa germination. Poa is always one of the biggest challenges in the Lowcountry. Extending its germination four to five weeks earlier would only put more pressure on our pre-emergent program.
This year, the North Course overseed went out in late October. By going a few weeks earlier, it will help us have a more successful overseed than we saw last year. During the late fall in to December, our Agronomy team is diligently performing practices to establish the Ryegrass, dry the course out, and provide excellent playing conditions for the winter months ahead.
Needless to say, it’s a busy fall season and we couldn’t be more pleased as all our agronomy efforts performed this year take shape. Both courses are
starting to present more consistent conditions and the agronomy team’s continued and dedicated efforts speak for themselves. Looking ahead, we’re developing our agronomy plans for the new year, as we work toward making 2023 one of the best at Berkeley Hall.

Holiday Health & Well-Being
Well-being and what it means to the overall you: When it comes right to it, well-being is judging life positively and feeling good.
We can help with that! With our knowledgeable fitness trainers and nutritional ‘eating well” menu options, we’ve got you covered.
Around the holidays, it can be challenging to stay on track with fitness goals. We find the best way to navigate this time of year is often by simply being “mindful.”
MINDFUL HOLIDAY MENUS
It’s tempting to cut calories but creating a calorie deficit sets you up for falling short of goals. Some approach the holidays by eating less in the morning so they can enjoy festivities or meals later in the day and evening.
Yet, your body needs calories to fuel it: from your beating heart to filter ing done by your kidneys. When you reduce calories, your energy and endurance plummet and your body uses lean body mass for energy instead of the intended fat. That’s where thoughtful culinary planning can set you up for success.
FOCUS ON THE WHOLE
Whenever possible, eat whole, unprocessed foods, nutrients are more bioavailable and readily used by our bodies. They also taste great and complement our healthy life style and well-being. Whole foods include fresh fruits, nuts and berries, avocados, leafy green vegetables, sweet potatoes, eggs, fish, and natural whole grains.
Culinary options on the Berkeley Hall menus reflect that commit ment to fresh, local fare. Chef Jeff’s commitment to “eating well” dining options and a wide array of salads and fresh, local catch feature make it easy to be mindful, all year long.
Fitness amenities at the Club make it easy to weave lifestyle, exercise and
culinary options together. Walking, Cycling, or Kayaking at the River Park are joyful and accessible, and our Fitness Center’s full roster of fitness classes, yoga, pilates and more are just some of the amenities that make our Lowcountry lifestyle such a positive one.
And when it comes to overall well-being: It’s being mindful and focusing on the whole you. Holidays are about family and friends, good will and gatherings. Make sure you give yourself time to enjoy all of it, as a gift to yourself.
