Constructing Journal Wk6 This week we did the model for our own site case building- ERC, so we observed the whole structure of the building and found the main span for it by using the following two pictures. From the left picture, I have label the red lines as the primary structure and the blue lines as the secondary structure for the horizontal part. The left red line are the five main steel frames which support the main load for the slant roof, also the left blue line are several thin steel frame which reinforce the whole structure. The right red line is made by the timber decking and there are eight purple spans between the right blue decking, those spans support the decking to make the roof as firm as possible.
Above picture is the vertical structure that we discovered, which can tell us the horizontal distance for the steel frame and also some details about he steel frame. After finding those structural details, then we are going to do the real model for our ERC building, we prepared glue, blade, white cardboard, plywood and plastic sheet.
So we measured the size of the steel frame and using the 1:50 drawing to scale the whole building. We used the plywood to work as the steel frame which can make the material can be easily sticked together and also it is because the loading quality of plywood is better than the white card board. Therefore we cut the every single part of the structural from the plywood and was going to stick them together to construct our ERC building.
We built the supporting wall(labeled in orange lines, this is the part from the outside two buildings) firstly and therefore the frame work can be easily stick up together. The following photos show our constructing processes strep by step till finishing.
The plywood can not directly stick to the decking steadily, thus we put another heavy timber on the top of those spans to make them stable.
Following photos show the final work of our ERC building, and we also added the plastic sheet that we prepared before to work as the glass roofing which actually is the skylight in the real building’s structure.
