Wk9 Constructing Journal Activity 1
Betty Xiang 634001 Last week we observed the roof which is the project that be recharged by Nicole and the other girl. They analysised the building details of the Murcutt Guest Studio’s roof, and showed the 1:1 scale model of the roof to us. We can clearly find out the structural of the rafters, roof beams and the purlins from the left photo.

The supporting Column which is made by laminated timber, it is quite heavy and firm, which need to load most force from the roof.

It is also mentioned that this structural using bolted joint to build the whole roof.
Activity 2
Steel Flashing Sealant & Movement capability ceiling purlin
This is the second activity in last week’s tutorial, which is the the 3D image for my part of site visit detail (Oval Pavilion). The curve part in the image which is made by fiber glass, and this is thermal insulation, which provides the required resistance to heat flow through the roof assembly. This building is a timber frame,and the middle two column are the wall of the building. The layer beside the wall is vapor retarder on warm or heated side of wall. Waterproofing: RFS-01: Roof Flashing Sealant & Movement capability Economic implication of decisions: This building largely using timber as its frame, quite a little steel and glass fiber. Timber is not too expansive and using less steel which can reduce the economic budget. Although the glass fiber is not too cheap, it is necessary to the building for the thermal insulation. Sustainability: Using timber is not too good but still is okay, because timber’s embodied energy is 10 MJ/kg and the carbon emission is 0.72 CO2/kg, so timber is not a bad choice from those data. And steel’s embodied energy is 20.10 MJ/kg and the carbon emission is 1.37 CO2/kg. Overall, using more timber than steel is good for sustainability. Prons and cons: this building is quite good.
