This soft metal loves color. It burns with a bright lilac flame when it touches water, turns black in the open air, and is found inside all sorts of foods, including vividly colored fruits such as bananas and melons. Potassium is essential to the health of cells and blood vessels. It conducts electrical signals around animals’ bodies, and, with sodium, is essential for proper muscle contraction and the maintaining of blood pressure. Your body cannot make potassium, so it must be obtained from foods. Most of the 85 percent of the potassium your body absorbs is taken in through the cells of the small intestine (left).

Potassium is vital for the health of plant cells. Crops quickly deplete potassium, so farmers spread their land with potash-rich fertilizers (potash is a term for any salt that contains water-soluble potassium).
Potassium was the first elemental metal to be found using an electric current.
Soft metal
If you cut pure potassium—you can do this easily with a knife because it is so soft—it is bright silver. However, it quickly tarnishes to a gray-black when exposed to air. It also reacts instantly with water to release hydrogen that burns with a lilac flame. Potassium is the seventh most abundant element in Earth’s crust.

II. Hyper Drive I started working on airbags. Jordan Brand would say, we need a new airbag for the AJ XXI. Running would say, we need a new, articulated airbag for the Air Max Moto. I did airbag design for a year and then I applied to work in the Innovation Kitchen. The first year, working with legends like Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore, was really intimidating. I was the twenty-seventh person to get a job in the Kitchen and the fourth or fifth woman. There’s hundreds of people in there now. I'm always problem solving so I’m rarely short on new ideas. New experiences and constant learning fuel the best ideas for me. Many of mine are not initially grounded in reality because I literally believe anything is possible. I think this is a great place to start but the true craft is taking that idea and making it real and impactful. From the very beginning, the HyperAdapt was one shoe that I had asked Tinker, “Can I just prototype in my size?” Because when I’m building a size 10, a men’s 10, it’s really hard to get a good perception of what it feels like. Normally, you build for whoever the main decision maker of the product is. I’m a women’s 7, so I built the HyperAdapt in a women’s 7. Right away in 2012, with the first motorized units, I was running in them, wearing them, dealing with them. At the time we had a remote on your wrist, a bracelet basically, that you controlled the shoe with. That bracelet could also control your iPod, so I didn’t know if I was tightening the shoe or turning up the volume, which was really annoying. Other than that it was amazing. By 2030, people are going to realize how irritating footwear actually is. People tolerate laces, but, actually, they’re super annoying. The idea is that footwear will become more like a part of the body. Part of me versus something I put on. I’d say I work on about ten different models at a time. I think right now I have fourteen models. For about a year or two, during the really meaty times of the HyperAdapt, I was maybe only working on two models. Between managing electronics and everything else that went into that thing, it was just like doing ten people’s jobs.
