is a member-operated professional organization composed of individuals from every aspect of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. It sponsors educational seminars and trips, holds informational programs, and helps raise money for the Literacy Assistance Center, in addition to creating opportunities for junior level publishing people to learn from a variety of senior staff. Originally the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York, the Guild was formed in 1925 by a group of thirty-five craftspeople from the many binderies in and around New York City. These pioneers gathered monthly to discuss issues, brainstorm through common problems, and address areas for improvement. These engagements helped develop many of the processes that we take for granted today. To become a member of BIGNY, or to join one of our organizing committees, please contact any member of the executive board or visit our website at bigny.org. Le tter from the BIGNY President

On behalf of the Book Industry Guild of New York, I extend a warm welcome to the 32nd New York Book Show. We are so excited to be returning to Battery Gardens this evening for what many of us consider to be the highest point in BIGNY’s calendar year. Thank you to our Book Show Co-Chairs, Christine Davis and Edson Atwood, for leading their dedicated team of volunteers to make this year’s show a success. Through the Book Show Committee’s year-long effort, we bring you these beautiful books that the judges have selected as the best-designed and best-crafted books of 2017. From the first poster mailing to the final award certificate mailing, the show is an enormous undertaking. Having attended many of this year’s book show meetings and being involved in much of what goes into the show, I have been impressed by our growing volunteer base whose energy and ideas have contributed greatly to this show’s vitality. We also thank the numerous volunteers and donors who are listed throughout this catalog for their time as well as service and monetary donations. BIGNY is a member-operated, wholly volunteer organization. It is composed of professionals from all aspects of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. Special recognition goes to Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster again this year for providing the

meeting space and financial assistance we continue to rely on for this show’s success. The New York Book Show contributes to covering the basic expenses of BIGNY’s monthly evening programs, educational seminars, manufacturing plant trips and literary efforts. It is also important to note that we donate the books submitted to this show to organizations dedicated to promoting literacy. This exceptionally designed catalog is yours to take this evening. We hope you will continue to look at it over the year ahead and let it inspire you in your own work or to become involved in the Guild. We welcome you to all of our events throughout the year. We are always looking for new volunteers to participate. Please find us online at www.bigny.org As President of the Guild, I thank you for joining in tonight’s annual celebration of book making! Sincerely,

Martha Hanson President The Book Industry Guild of New York

L etter from the Co -Cha irs

Welcome to the 32nd Annual New York Book Show! The Book Show’s mission is to present the “best of the best” in book design, production, and manufacturing chosen by a group of your industry colleagues. What you will see on display here tonight and printed in this catalog, we believe, does just that. A lot of skill and care goes into producing these books. We dare say that the Book Show winners are about truth and beauty, expressed through words, art, and design, inseparable from the physicality of the book itself. We were thrilled to see over 500 entries this year. The competition was fierce and we thank you and appreciate every single one of those entries! While you walk tonight’s show, and as you view this catalog, you will directly experience the wide range of papers and case materials, typefaces and inks, foils and coatings, all painstakingly composed to create incredible books. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as co-chairs of this beloved event, but this night would not be possible without the unwavering support of the board of the Book Industry Guild of New York or the tireless efforts of all the committee members and volunteers that make this show happen.

nybs18_3p_fm_r3.indd 11

We would be remiss if we did not thank the many varied judges, from editors and writers, to production managers and print or paper specialists that spent a full day deciding which books we would feature. And we want to thank you all for coming and supporting this annual event! This is a night of mingling with friends, enjoying the evening sky at the tip of Manhattan, sampling the foods, and getting to see and touch the best books of 2017. Thank you again,

Edson Atwood
