Beautifully illustrated with more than 350 draw ings, paintings, sculptures, and architectural views, this book establishes the centrality of disegno to Michelangelo’s work. Carmen C. Bambach presents a comprehensive and engaging narrative of the artist’s long career in Florence and Rome, beginning with his training under the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio and the sculptor Bertoldo and ending with his seventeenyear appointment as chief architect of Saint Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican. The chapters relate Michelangelo’s compositional drawings, sketches, life studies, and fullscale cartoons to his major commissions—such as the ceiling frescoes and the Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel, the church of San Lorenzo and its New Sacristy (Medici Chapel) in Florence, and Saint Peter’s —offering fresh insights into his creative process. Also explored are Michelangelo’s influential
role as a master and teacher of disegno, his literary and spiritual interests, and the virtuoso drawings he made as gifts for intimate friends, such as the nobleman Tommaso de’ Cavalieri and Vittoria Colonna, the marchesa of Pescara. the verso the small seated figure with a putto at the side, which seems to be an early idea for the prophet Isaiah, while the softly drawn arm study in black chalk aligns with the pose of the Erythraean Sibyl. The increasing self-assurance of the artist is noticeable among the drawings done in the same medium. For example, the study for the head of the prophet Zechariah, one of the first Seers to be painted, is executed lightly and timidly in black chalk (pl. 53), whereas the powerful drawing for the Cumaean Sibyl in Turin has the formal definition of a figure carved in marble (pl. 54; fig. 30). This sibyl was among the last to be frescoed before Michelangelo had the scaffolding moved to commence the second portion of the ceiling. Though more schematic, the black-chalk figures on the Turin verso (pl. 55), which were preparatory for the lunette of Ezechias, Manasses, and Amon, are as bold and expressive as the Cumaean Sibyl on the recto. Also from the last group of drawings done in preparation for the first portion of the ceiling are vigorous studies from the model that were probably for the arms of God the Father in the Creation of Adam; the other side of the sheet contains earlier studies for the Battle of Cascina (pls. 56, 57). Leaves from a small, disassembled sketchbook at the Ashmolean Museum pertain mostly to the design of the later parts of the ceiling and to the Ancestors of Christ, but they illustrate what earlier sketches of a similar type must have looked like.159
These sheets include slight sketches with initial ideas for figures in pen and ink, “to explore the manner of the poses,” to quote Vasari,160 as well as more developed studies in black chalk. The powerful study in black chalk of a male nude model (pl. 58) is unforgivingly naturalistic, undoubtedly observed from a malnourished garzone in the workshop, and was preparatory for a figure in reverse design on the lunette of Phares, Esron, and Aram by the altar wall of the chapel, which was later destroyed.161 It compares closely in style to the Turin study for the lunette of Ezechias, Manasses, and Amon (pl. 55). The summary sketch on the verso of the sheet (pl. 59) is among Michelangelo’s very rare drawings of a figural group on the Sistine ceiling, its main function being to articulate the atmospheric chiaroscuro of the arrangement. The bent-over figure is recognizable, though in a highly idealized form, on the lunette of Naason. The bold sketch of a figure on another sheet fcrom the Ashmolean sketchbook (pl. 60) relates to the other destroyed lunette by the altar wall, which depicted Abraam, Isaac, and Iudas.162 The abstract blackchalk sketches on the verso (pl. 61) were simply a means to explore investing the seated figures with movement. By the time he prepared the drawings for the Creation of Adam, Michelangelo had begun using red chalk more frequently than black chalk for studies after the living model. It will be recalled that Raffaello Borghini in 1584 had considered red-chalk

MIL AN It holds its violence in reserve. It is symmetrical, as are most vertebrates. It is in fact bipedal, like the animal that stands up, the animal that can mourn strangers. This suggestiveness is the key to surrealism. Suddenly coming up for air, a whale breaking the sea’s surface, the surreal object is beyond or over (sur) a reality it might have been expected to stay below. The scissors is a mask without a face.
