Judges’ Biographies

AMANDA WEISS is an award-winning book designer at Princeton University Press in Princeton, NJ. She has a strong interest in print design, brand identity, lettering, and custom typography. In her spare time, she pet-sits and tries her best not to kill her plants. Amanda Weiss

AMY HAWLEY has worked in publishing for over fifteen years. She began her career at Oxford University Press as an associate editor in English Language Teaching. Later, she worked as a commissioning editor and then senior managing editor with Cambridge University Press where she specialized in print, digital, Amy Hawley and blended learning materials. In her current position as a project manager with Teachers College, Amy edits academic reports and a website for the Consortium for Policy Research in Education. In addition, she does freelance copyediting and proofreading for HarperCollins on a wide range of topics—from crochet to wine. In her spare time, Amy volunteers her editing skills for educational boating materials for the education department of the United States Power Squadrons.

ANJALI PALA is a designer at Miko McGinty Inc. in Brooklyn, where she specializes in the design and production of art and illustrated books and works with a variety of museums, galleries, and publishers. Anjali joined the studio in 2010 after stints at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Metropolitan Anjali Pala Museum of Art, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. During her time at the studio, she has designed books for many artists, writers, and curators, including Marcel Dzama, Maira Kalman, and Orhan Pamuk. Her award-winning designs have been honored by TIME Magazine, the New York Book Show, and Bookbuilders of Boston. She loves fiction with botanical subplots and making cyanotypes on her roof.

Anna Oler

ANNA OLER is associate director of production in the trade department of W. W. Norton & Company. She also oversees the production of the Liveright imprint. Recent projects include Neil DeGrasse Tyson’s Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, Mary Roach’s Grunt, Jules Feiffer’s Kill My Mother, and Rick Bayless’s More Mexican Everyday.

CAROLYN TELESCA has worked in publishing for 13 years. Currently an associate director of production for the Berkley Group, Carolyn has been with Penguin Random House since 2004. While she started out managing inventory for the mass market division, her passion for the printed book found her making the transition Carolyn Telesca to production in 2008 when she took on the role as reprints manager for Berkley Production. Since then, she’s had the opportunity to work on backlist reprints, repackages, and reissues for the Riverhead, Perigee, Putnam, and Dutton divisions, fiction and nonfiction, as well as working on a variety of printed material types including, but not limited to, box set corrugation, posters, and stickers. Carolyn was educated at Hofstra University, earning a BBA with a major in International Business and minor concentration in Business Law.

CHRISTINE DAVIS began her career in publishing over 20 years ago in Boston working for the reprint and business manager at Little, Brown and Company. In 1993 she moved over to the vendor side, working for the component printer Henry N. Sawyer in customer service and then as a sales representative in New York Christine Davis City. She then sold cover materials for ICG/ Holliston, Ecological Fibers, and is presently employed by Neenah Paper as a sales development manager. She is very proud to play even a small role in manufacturing beautiful, interesting, and meaningful books. As a past New York Book Show Co-chair, she was very happy to be selected as a judge this year and had a wonderful time participating.

DREW STEVENS executed his first book design in 1991—“executed” being the operative word there: the results were wretched. But his second book design was pretty good and by the time he did his third, he had hit his stride and knew he found his career. Years later, Drew learned that he hails from a long lineage of Drew Stevens typesetters and graphic designers, going back at least as far as a great-great-great grandfather who taught typography in the

early nineteenth century at a trade school in Berlin. Sometimes your career finds you. Lately, he’s been getting into photography, too. He is currently art director for Feminist Press in NYC, previously at Chanticleer Press and Westminster John Knox Press. He’s found online at studiodrew.nyc.

EDSON ATWOOD loves publishing; at ten years old he started a neighborhood newspaper. With a degree in Journalism, his first jobs were describing test tubes and spectrophotometers for a scientific catalog, then editor of a weekly newspaper. But journalism wasn’t dirty enough, so he managed a print shop, then proEdson Atwood duction for Time Inc. for 20 years. It was a tough job, flying to Miami in February for press OKs for Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue. He managed production at Reader’s Digest Books, print procurement at American Express, and was production director of Billboard magazine. Edson now manages production for Film Journal International. He is engaged in the Center for Book Arts, the Greater New York Independent Publishers Association, and the Book Industry Guild. And he hand-makes chapbooks.

ELIANE LIU is currently the associate sales director at 1010 Printing Group US, and for over a decade has achieved extensive knowledge of the print manufacturing process and a deep understanding of the industry trends. She holds a B.S. in International Business from Berkeley College and recently received training Eliane Liu in Leadership for High Potential from NYU. Over the years in the business, Eliane has produced a diverse range of book formats and managed key relationships within the industry leading publishing firms. She can truly help any production department achieve the results that publishers are looking for in today’s market. In her journey up the corporate ladder, Eliane also had the opportunity to work as a production manager for Sterling Publishing. This allowed her to broaden her expertise and develop a keen sense of purchasing domestically and internationally, making her an experienced and knowledgeable professional in the publishing world.

ELLERY HARVEY is an award-winning book designer, illustrator, and printmaker from Henniker, NH. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions and publications, including Linework NW and Pathos Literary Magazine. Ellery holds an MA in Book Publishing from Portland State University, and has Ellery Harvey taught book design at Warner Pacific College, the Independent Publishing Resource Center, and Portland State University. From 2009-2014, he was head bookmaker for Scout Books, in Portland, OR, where he produced work for Facebook, Squarespace, TED Talks, Field Notes, The Frank Zappa Foundation, and Tom Waits, among many others. Ellery is currently a designer at Heinemann Publishing, in Portsmouth, NH, where he works on Fountas & Pinnell educational books and products. He resides in Dover, NH, with a cat named Rabbit, and operates Lambhouse MFG Co., a small print studio and bindery dedicated to underground art and literature.

ERIKA SUFFERN is an associate editor at the Modern Language Association, where she edits books in the Approaches to Teaching World Literature series and writes for The MLA Style Center. Her academic background is in early modern art and architectural history. Before joining the MLA staff in 2016, she was assoErika Suffern ciate director of the Renaissance Society of America and managing editor of its journal, Renaissance Quarterly.

ERIN FITZSIMMONS is an associate art director at HarperCollins Children’s Books, where she has worked for the past seven years. At Harper, she art directs and designs books for the picture book, middle grade, and young adult audiences. She graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School with a concentration in photojournalErin Fitzsimmons ism and visual storytelling. She loves merging her passions for imagery, storytelling, typography, and hand-lettering in the vibrant and ever-changing world of children’s books. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband (a fellow book designer) and their three cats.

Giraud Lorber

GIRAUD LORBER started his career in publishing sixteen years ago at Farrar, Straus and Giroux with a typewriter on his desk. Since then he’s watched the production process evolve from handling film flats to digital work flows. Even though these days much of his work at Hachette is in digital production, there are few things more satisfying to Giraud than holding a well-made, beautifully designed book.

HOPE MILLER GOODELL has over 15 years of design and art direction experience. In her current position as associate design director at W. W. Norton & Company, she works on college textbooks and accompanying ebooks on subjects ranging from sociology, history, and literature to biology, economics, and music. Hope Miller Goodell She takes special interest and pleasure in developing infographics and commissioned illustrations for many of her projects. Creating books that invite students to engage, help educators connect, and result in increased understanding keeps her challenged and inspired. Hope is a graduate of The College of Wooster and Parsons School of Design. She resides in Maplewood, NJ with her husband and two young sons. Over the years, she has received several New York Book Show awards and is honored to return this year as a judge.

JUANITA THOMPSON has worked in publishing for over 30 years. She started with Doubleday as a production clerk and has spanned seven different publishing companies and a short stint as a project manager for her own company; you could say publishing is in her blood. She has watched it go from exacto Juanita Thompson knives, film flats, and proportion wheels to content management systems and WCAG 2.0 compliance. She has a B.A. in English from Montclair State University and currently lives in New Jersey. She is the parent of a son who is currently finishing his sophomore year at Juilliard and a stepson who has provided her with the delight of two granddaughters who she has introduced to and shares the love of books with.

KRISTIAN SANFORD, a managing editor at McGraw-Hill Education, has previously worked in digital production at W.W. Norton & Co., HarperCollins, and Random House. Like any bearded man in his early 30s, he lives in Brooklyn with his wife and their dog. Kristian Sanford

San Francisco designer MADELEINE CORSON has been creating books since opening her studio in 1985. She and her team devote themselves to creating iconic design solutions for wineries, authors, poets, publishers, universities, and museums. A genuine book lover who enjoys reading the dictionary on weekends, Madeleine Corson she has designed for Farrar, Straus and Giroux; Little, Brown and Company; Abrams Books; Chronicle Books; Ten Speed Press; and National Geographic, among others. Her award-winning book for the National Park Service, A Sense of Place, guides the preservation of Yosemite National Park. For the past 12 years, she has published and designed the West Marin Review, a literary and arts publication that captures the voices of emerging writers and artists. Passionate about the written and printed word, Madeleine’s attention to every element—typography, color, and line—results in designs that are visually distinctive and wholly engaging.

MARY G. LAPEGNA has been in the printing industry for over 25 years. Born in Tuscany and raised in New York City, she began her printing career in 1983 as a production manager at Mondadori New York. In 1990 she joined Pizzi Offset New York as senior production coordinator and sales assistant. Her fluency in Mary G. Lapegna Italian and English were a major asset for these companies, and Mary developed her vast experience in high-end quality publications with these printers. In 1998 she moved to the Asian print world and has since been working as a sales executive and production supervisor for prestigious companies such as Toppan Printing Company,

Leo Paper USA, Regent Publishing Services Ltd., and Asia Pacific Offset. Her hobbies include musical and vocal performance, recording and engineering, and traveling to Europe.

MIKE KWAN is an associate production director at Simon & Schuster, currently working primarily with S&S’s Touchstone imprint. His over 15-year publishing career started in S&S’s reprint production group, and he has managed the production and manufacturing of a wide variety of books in many different formats, Mike Kwan ranging from mass market to board books and more. When Mike is not obsessing over the finer details of book manufacturing, he enjoys photography, cycling, and craft beers.

RAY FRANZINO retired earlier this year, having worked in the book manufacturing and publishing industry since 1973. He started his career as a customer service representative at The Haddon Craftsmen, Inc. He then worked for Allied Paper Company as a mill sales representative before working as the Manager of Ray Franzino Manufacturing Materials for Litton Educational Publishing. Ray retired after 35 years as a Corporate Account Manager/ Sales Representative for Courier Corporation, which was acquired by RR Donnelley & Sons in 2015. This is Ray’s third time judging for the New York Book Show.

SEAN MINTUS is a senior production manager at W.W. Norton. He began his publishing career as a designer at Carnegie Mellon University Press before becoming assistant editor. From there he went to the literary journal Third Coast, where he served as fiction editor. Upon moving to New York in 2005, Sean Mintus he spent some time as a sales representative at Maple Press before arriving at Norton’s College Division in 2010. There,

he handles the bulk of the Norton Anthologies as well as a smattering of history, psychology, economics, and sociology titles. He lives in Brooklyn where he operates an illegal rooftop vegetable farm, enjoys brown liquor, and occasionally grows a beard.

SHUBHANI SARKAR is an innovative and award-winning graphic designer and art director with extensive experience in print and digital media in the corporate, nonprofit, and fine arts sectors. Shubhani is currently the creative director of Sarkar Design Studio—a New York City–based full-service graphic design stuShubhani Sarkar dio offering distinctive corporate identity and branding, book design and publications, packaging, art direction, creative consulting and project management, editorial photoshoots, and digital media strategy, specializing in culinary and lifestyle verticals.

VINCE GALLO is the senior creative director at William H. Sadlier, Inc. He has been on the design end of educational publishing for more than 28 years. This includes having also worked with other distinguished publishers such as Macmillan/McGraw-Hill and SilverBurdett & Ginn. Vince has been the recipient Vince Gallo of numerous design awards in almost all school subject areas. He credits many of these achievements to the support of the incredible design talent he has had the good fortune to work with over the years. “Educational publishing has always been an inspirational journey. I always welcome new design challenges and developing new approaches that visually stimulate the reader into wanting to learn.” Vince lives in northwest New Jersey with his wife and four children. This is his second time serving as a judge for the New York Book Show.

Currently the director of production working with hardcover and paperback novels for Random House Children’s Books, TIMOTHY TERHUNE has been working in book production for 28 years. He started his career at Dover Publications, with tenures at Rizzoli Publications, Golden Books Family EntertainTimothy Terhune ment, and HarperCollins. He moved into children’s books believing that publishing books for young readers is one of the most vital areas of book publishing. Away from the office, he is an obsessive amateur brewer and is desperately trying to learn how to pick a five-string banjo.
