Letter from the BIGNY President Welcome to our 31st New York Book Show! On behalf of the Board and Executive Committee of the Book Industry Guild of New York, I am very pleased you are joining us at the highest point of our seasonal calendar. Inside these pages, and here at Battery Gardens, we are honored to share with you the best in the art of bookmaking produced by our remarkable book publishing industry. Through our New York Book Show, we are proud to show you the continuing vitality of book publishing as exemplified with six genres of publishing: General Trade, Special Trade, Children’s Trade, School, Professional/Reference, and Self-Published Covers. The books displayed here reflect the creativity, hard work and talent of individuals throughout our industry. And, in keeping with the Guild’s ongoing commitment to enhance literacy, all the books submitted for this Show will be donated to organizations dedicated to promoting literacy. The Book Industry Guild of New York is a member-operated, wholly volunteer, organization. It is composed of professionals from every aspect of the book publishing and book manufacturing industries. It is this group of volunteers that makes the 31st annual Book Show possible. Very special thanks go to Richard Bretan and Angela Zurlo, the co-chairs of this year’s event. Their yearlong effort of tireless leadership, guidance and coordination of all the committees for the many tasks needed, results in this spectacular evening! Also, thanks go to the numerous volunteers and donors who are listed throughout this catalog, for their time, monetary

and/or service donations. Through the dedication of all these volunteers, we can admire this outstanding collection of beautiful books which the judges have selected as the finest designed and manufactured books of 2016. A special note of thanks to Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. They have been long standing partners by providing space and financial assistance enabling us to present this Show. We are very grateful for their steadfast support. Lastly, as President of the Guild, I thank you for attending this event. As an organization, our greatest asset is our members, both corporate and individual. This annual New York Book Show also contributes to covering the basic expenses of our monthly evening programs, our literacy efforts, manufacturing plant trips, and educational seminars. Please continue your ongoing interest and enjoy this evening! We are delighted to share this Book Show with you as a celebration of our collective accomplishments. Come join us at all of our wonderful events throughout the year which help enhance and expand our incredible publishing industry. As always, everyone is welcome! Sincerely, Jody Saunders Ray President The Book Industry Guild of New York www.bigny.org

Letter from the Co-Chairs As co-chairs for the 31st annual New York Book Show, it is our pleasure to present the best and brightest in book design and manufacturing for 2016. The range of entries was truly stunning and serves as a testament to the vitality and imagination of the book industry! For hundreds of years, books have been instruments of learning. They enable us to voice opinions, convey information, share ideas, and open imagination. Just by attending this show, you see what drew us to organize this year’s event. From graphic novels to biographies, from cookbooks to textbooks, we present those areas that are not often showcased in the public eye: the beauty and craft of design, production, and manufacturing. It’s our way of recognizing the crucial role the publishing industry plays in making the world both a little smaller and a little larger. Nowhere else will you see fawning over paper stock or folios, or people lovingly handling a good velvet matte cover. This letter would be woefully incomplete without our heartfelt thanks to: the board of the Book Industry Guild of New York, for their

nybs17_2p_fm_r5.indd 9

unwavering enthusiasm and support; the various Guild organizations, for their generous contributions of labor and materials; and to our esteemed panel of judges, who all took to heart the importance of their participation in a full day that we hope was a labor of love. Finally, to the blend of seasoned veterans and fresh-faced newbies that constitute this year’s Book Show Committee: an extra-large Thank You for consistently going above and beyond in your donations of time, thought, and muscle to make this show a reality. We’re honored to have you as our guests at this year’s New York Book Show. Fawn over our esteemed winners, have a drink on us, and enjoy the evening.
