Project Super Star culminates competition: winner will be anounced on Sept. 23rd Modesto CA - “You sing very well, and you stole the public,” said Rene Infante son of legendary Mexican singer / author Pedro Infante; while he was a judge in Project Superstar of the Central Valley —during the final competition.

The project started in July, 2012 and since then hundreds of people have gathered at the Palladium Night Club in Modesto to support their favorite local singer. “I like that this project is giving an opportunity to local talent,” shared Carmen a Modesto resident and she added that she appreciates the competition which takes place every Sunday because”[the event] provides an family oriented environment.”

Sinfónica de Stockton intent nuevas alturas con Cirque STOCKTON, CALa Orquesta Sinfónica de Stockton lista para el “Cirque de la Symphonie”, una nueva que trae una fusión de actos de circo y música al Auditorio Atherton en Stockton, el sábado, 15 de septiembre y Domingo, 16 de septiembre 2012.

En el concierto de siete artistas internacionales de circo- entre acróbatas aéreos, contorsionista, malabarista y mimos tendrán sus actos coreografiados profesionalmente al ritmo de la música interpretada por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Stockton.

El público puede anticipar un festín para sus ojos y los oídos, dice Jan M. Stanley Directora de Comunicaciones de la Sinfónica de Stockton.

El mural “Querido Stockton” es una colaboración de un grupo de artistas locales, Benjamin Saffold y el negocio local, JF Donaldson Tires, el cual se finalizo el pasado Domingo, 26 de agosto después de tres días de trabajo.

El artista, Joel Aaron Munoz creó el diseño para el mural que ahora es parte de la ciudad de Stockton en el marco del “Proyecto Querido Stockton” un proyecto en curso que permite a la comunidad demostrar su amor por la ciudad de Stockton de manera única.

Dear Stockton Smile You Are Loved: New Mural beautifies downtown Stockton STOCKTON, CA- “Dear Stockton Smile You Are Loved,” is the message that the reads the new mural on 240 N. Hunter Street in downtown Stockton.

The mural “Dear Stockton” is a collaboration between Benjamin Saffold, a group of local artists, and JF Donaldson Tires ; it completed last Sunday, August 26 after three days of work.

Local artist, Joel Aaron Munoz created the design for mural that is now part of the city of Stockton as part of the “Dear Stockton Project” and ongoing project that allows the community to demonstrate their love for the city of Stockton.

“The mural magnifies the message of Dear Stockton to another level,” said Benjamin Saffold, founder of the Dear Stockton project.

“What better positive message can there be? To say dear Stockton smile you are loved, that is something that is already

true but is not something that is always on the front page of the newspaper.”

“There is people that love Stockton that have not had a microphone in front of them, that have not been interviewed or asked about how they see Stockton,” added Saffold.

And so the “Dear Stockton Project” gives the space for community to express themselves.

“I hope it inspires some of the young kids in the community that work can be done with local business support youth and art activity” said JF Donaldson Tire owner, Jim Donaldson in a video produced by Saffold prior to the completion of the mural.

“Which leads to the support of our city and hopefully a new birth to Stockton after the troubles we been going through, give some hope for all of here in Stockton that things can definitely get better.”

NCLR has helped register over 60,000 new Latino voters through its multistate campaign, Mobilize to Vote (M2V). M2V is at the core of NCLR’s Civic Engagement Program, which aims to build and support long-term Latino participation in the democratic process.

Gr iselda Olivas, una enfermera registrada c on m á s de 30 a ño s de experiencia en el campo de la medicina, es descrita a menudo como una verdadera defensora de las mujeres en la lucha contra el cáncer de mama.

Cuando era niña Olivas era la amigo que siempre c u id aba a ot ros, “si m is amigos se lastimaban, iba a buscar un cur ita”, dijo Olivas.

“Mi madre solía burlarse de mí y decir, tu vas a ser enfermera cuando crezcas”.

Hoy Oliva s aplic a má s que curitas, trabaja como enfer mera reg ist rad a en el Centro Médico de San José y como navegador de Cáncer para el programa de mamografía móvil.

El primer trabajo de Olivas fue en General Hospital San Joaqu í n. Pero su ú lt i ma instancia era de trabajar específicamente con la salud de las mujeres.

Y así, un día, hace 16 años, mirando el periódico, un anuncio de trabajo llamó su atención.

“Ellos [El Hospital San J o s e] e s t a b a b u s c a n d o u n a en fer mer a bi l i ng üe que hiciera trabajo en la comunidad para la salud de las mujeres.”

“Me g ustar ía hacer algo como eso, salir a la comunidad y ayudar a mis muje r e s l at i n a s”, p e n s ó Olivas ese día.

Y así empezó a trabajar para el programa de de t e nc ión d e c á nc e r e n el centro médico y ha trabajado incansablemente pa ra mejora r el cuid ado de pacientes con cáncer de mama en la comunidad.

“Cuando empezamos teníamos un pequeño carro y esa era nuestra clientela... ahora se ha convertido en una sala de archivos con más de 4, 000 carpetas y el 60 por ciento o más son mujeres latinas”.

Durante sus primeros años con el programa, Olivas noto que muchas de sus pacientes sólo hablaban español, y que muchas mujeres no asistían a sus citas.

Es así que Olivas creao el programa de ser v icios de navegación y el Taller Comadre, el cual atiende a la s nec e sidade s de la s mujeres, especialmente a las latinas que enfrentan el cáncer de mama.

Griselda Olivas, a registered nurse with over 30 years of experience in the medical field, is often described as a true advocate f o r w om e n i n t h e f i g ht against breast cancer.

As a kid Olivas was the friend that will always take care others, “if my friends were injured I will go and get a band –aid,” says Olivas.

“My mom used to tease me and say, you are going to be a nurse when you grow up.”

Today Olivas applies more than just band-aids; she is a registered nurse at Saint Joseph’s Med ic a l C enter and Cancer Navigator for the mobile mammography program.

Olivas first job was at San Joaquin General Hospital.

But ultimately she wanted to work specifically in women`s health.

A n d s o o n e d a y, 1 6 years ago, looking at the newspaper, a job ad caught her attention. “ T h e y [S a n J o s e p h `s Hospital] were looking for a bilingual nurse who would do community outreach for women`s health.”

And so she started working for t he c a ncer detent ion program at medical center and has worked tirelessly to improve the care of breast cancer patients around the community.

“When I started we had one l it t le c a r t a nd t h at was our clientele… we now grown into a file room with over 4, 000 charts and 60 percent and more are Latina women.”

D u r i ng her f i r st ye a r s w ith the program, Olivas

realized that many of her patients only spoke Spanish, and that many women did not at tended t heir appointments.

Olivas created the navigation services program and the “Comadre” (Comrade) workshop which caters to the needs of women, especially Latinas facing breast cancer.

A s a Ca ncer Nav igator Olivas, many times picks up her patients and takes them to their appointments. “I knew for a fact that they w i l l ke ep up w it h t hei r appointments and I will be there to advocate to translate and to support them at the same time.”

At the time Latinas had limited informational resources due to the language b a r r i e r, t h e “C o m a d r e ” work shop dedic ated to prov ide resources and information about breast cancer in the Latina community.

“I c ome f rom a st rong Latina family and there is a lot of “comadres”, when we sit down we talk about everything from A-Z …this was a time of sharing , talk about our health and about what we are doing to take care of ourselves.”

13 years have passed and the mission of the Comadre Workshop continues, the next one to be held at St. Linus Church on Tuesday, October 30th from 5:30 -8:00 P.M. “I just want to make sure that my ladies get the best care and are treated with dignity and respect … that is my mission.”

In attempt at praising Latinos, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews delivers condescending critique Marisa Treviño | September 5, 2012 LatinaLista — Watching MSNBC’s coverage last night of t he Democratic Nationa l Convention, I was expecting to hear less critique and more cheerleading as opposed to how the convention team, headed by Rachel Maddow and featuring the Rev. Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, and Steve Schmidt among others, responded to the GOP convention last week After all, it is MSNBC. Yet, I wasn’t prepared to feel uncomfortable when Chris Matthews, in tr ying to pay Latinos a compliment, showcased instead the depth of mainstream media’s ignorance about Latinos.

After San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro finished his speech, Chris Matthews gushed to Rachel Maddow that Castro’s speech was one of the greatest speeches he had ever heard. Maddow asked Matthews to explain his assessment and what followed angered me more than flattered me.

It angered me because it exemplified how a man of Chris Matthews’ education, age and position knows nothing about the Latino immigrant experience or ties, in this case, with Mexico. In his attempt to praise Latinos, it came across as a third-party analysis of people who are MSNBC’s viewers.

With comments such as: (paraphrasing) Latinos don’t want to be seen as victims of this society, they are self-reliant, they have a very alive dream and it has nothing to do with wanting to have a dependency on government or welfare, etc.

The awkward experience can be equated to being in the company of someone who insists on talking about you to others as if you’re not sitting there.

I understand there was no malice involved and it was a sincere response to Castro’s speech but it angers me that in this day and age media feels like they still have to ‘explain’ Latinos to readers/viewers.

In a later interview that Matthews had with actress Patricia Arquette and John Leguizamo in how arts funding would fare under the different parties, Matthews turned to Leguizamo and asked him how he liked Castro’s speech. He didn’t ask him how he liked Michelle Obama’s or any of the other speakers that night, just the other Latino of the night.

It’s that assumption that Latino guests/ panelists/pundits can only comment from a narrow perspective on an equally limited number of issues, usually immigration reform, the DREAM Act or other Latinos, that does more harm to the public perception of Latinos by those who think they’re helping.

They’re not.

In this case, the media isn’t helping Latinos to be seen as equally part of the mainstream when they continue to talk to us like we’re not watching or reading their coverage.

They’re not helping when they refuse to tap Latino pundits as regular contributors and instead only call them in if the issue of the day is deemed a ‘Latino issue.’

They’re not helping when they labor under the false assumption that all Latinos are just a generation away from the homeland.

It used to be t hat when t here were misperceptions and misunderstandings of someone else’s background, if culturally different, there would be a call for sensitivity training. Nowadays, it’s just basic education that needs to be done to understand that if you’re going to talk about Latinos, chances are we’re already in the room.

But Leo Winternitz eloquently captured the essence of the environmental view.

I don’t think his views can be said to be entirely representative of the Nature Conservancy or all environmentalists, just as Supervisor DeMartini doesn’t represent all Republicans. If we try to represent all views, in every story, there would be no end to the story, and we’d lose our perspective.

However, I was stunned that of all of the representatives of environmental groups that you could have interviewed, you decided to interview a representative of the pro-tunnel Nature Conservancy, a corporate “environmental” NGO that receives millions of dollars every year from the Walton Family Foundation. This is a real disservice to the vast majority of grassroots environmental activists, who oppose “saving” the Delta by draining it. This article gives a very false perspective of the environmental community’s perspectives on Jerry Brown’s plan to build the twin tunnels. The Nature Conservancy has been criticized over the years by many grassroots conservationists, tribal members, fishermen and environmental justice advocates for its top-down, corporate approach to addressing environmental problems that doesn’t listen to those communities most impacted by environmental degradation. For a much different perspective, you should interview folks such as Carolee Krieger, President of the California Water Impact Network, Bill Jennings, Executive Director of the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance, Caleen Sisk, Chief and Spiritual Leader of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, Barbara Barrigan-Parrilla, Executive Director of Restore the Delta, or Victor Gonella of the Golden Gate Salmon Association.

Elizabeth Blanchard is vying for the 2nd District of San Joaquin Delta College explained that her Asian culture is parallel to the Latino culture as they recognize education as a priority, “I want to ensure that the college accreditation never placed at risk again… as a trustee I ensure that we do not cut to ensure we serve students quality of education… I want to ensure we have quality technology,” highlighted Blanchard.

Also running for the Delta College’s Board District 2nd District is Claudia Moreno.

“We need GED classes for adults, I support the Dream Act… I want to educate both the youth and adults and to offer trainings for entrepreneurs, f isc a l responsibilit y and accreditation.”

Pablo Zapata candidate for Delta College’s 1st Board District feels that he needs to be active as, “I am concern of the state of the city, as a citizen, father, and an employee.”

The meeting concluded w ith Comerciantes Unidos’ nominations as the board will be voted into office in the upcoming months.
