FASHION’S REVOLUTIONIST

Inventive, opinionated and commercially minded, Mary Quant was the most iconic fashion designer of the 1960s. A design and retail pioneer, she popularised super-high hemlines and other irreverent looks that were critical to the development of the ‘Swinging Sixties’ scene. This spring the V&A Museum will host a fashion collections include examples of her famous designs from across the 1960s and 1970s.

On 6th April 2019, the V&A will open the first international retrospective on the iconic fashion designer Dame Mary Quant. The exhibition will explore the years between 1955 and 1975, when Quant revolutionised the high street, harnessing the youthful spirit of the sixties and new mass production techniques to create a new look for women. Quant personified the energy and fun of swinging London; and was a powerful role model for the working woman. Challenging conventions, she popularised the miniskirt, colourful tights, and tailored trousers – encouraging a new age of feminism. The mini skirt would go on to become an icon of the time and spark a new creative scene in London and beyond. Receiving unprecedented access to Dame Mary Quant’s Archive, as well as drawing on the V&A’s extensive fashion holdings, which include the largest public collection of Quant garments in the world, the show will bring together over 120 garments as well as accessories, cosmetics, sketches and photographs - the majority of which have never been on display before. Last year the V&A launched a call-out to the public to track down rare Quant garments from wardrobes around the country. Receiving over 800 responses, 35 objects from 30 individuals were selected alongside personal stories from the owners and 50 photographs of the women wearing their beloved Quant clothes. These objects and stories have transformed the exhibition narrative, uncovering rare examples such as a very early and unlabelled blouse, a hat sold at Bazaar, and colourful PVC raincoats. Exhibition lender Sheila Hope came forward with her dress made for her 21st birthday from a Butterick dress pattern, describing the piece as “an iconic, simple design which instantly appealed to me, frilled neckline and sleeves with tiny darts to shape and ease the elbow.”

The exhibition runs from 6th April 2019 until 16th February 2020

The beginning of the exhibition will set the scene of post-war London for the opening of Quant’s experimental shop Bazaar, on Chelsea’s King’s Road in 1955. It will show how her designs, often based on schoolgirl pinafores or masculine tailoring, brought an entertaining slant to fashion, soon noticed by fashion editors and newspaper journalists in the burgeoning media of the day. Inspiring young women to rebel against traditional dress worn by their mothers and grandmothers, Quant’s tiny boutique on the King’s Road grew into a wholesale brand available in department stores across the UK. Quant’s success soon hit America, where her designs were made for chain stores and mail order companies. Quant quickly became the woman that made fashion less exclusive and more accessible to a new generation. Ahead of her time in marketing and promotion, Quant was the embodiment of the label. Her distinctive, photogenic style, playful energy and revolutionary approach made her the ultimate ambassador for the brand. The show will explore some of Quant’s most memorable moments from collecting her OBE to the evolution of her rising hemlines. The exhibition will look at her collaborations with manufacturers, diversifying into underwear, hosiery and cosmetics, all made to her designs, and packaged with her distinctive daisy logo. It will also explore her own line of dolls, known as Daisy dolls, a rival to Barbie.

Jenny Lister, co-curator of Mary Quant at the V&A, said: “Mary Quant transformed the fashion system, overturning the dominance of luxury couture from Paris. She dressed the liberated woman, freed from rules and regulations, and from dressing like their mothers. This long-overdue exhibition will show how Mary Quant’s brand connected with her customers, how she made designer fashion affordable for working women, and how her youthful, revolutionary clothes, inspired by London’s creative scene, made British streetstyle the global influence it remains today.” From small boutique to international label, Quant revolutionised British fashion with energy, flair and rebellion. Mary Quant at the V&A will feature never before seen designs and provide an unrivalled insight into the career of one of Britain’s most revolutionary and important fashion designers.

AGE OF EXPLORATION

GIEVES & HAWKES SPRING / SUMMER 2019 COLLECTION For Spring / Summer 19, Gieves & Hawkes takes inspiration from the legacy of its famous address, producing a collection that is bold, intrepid and modern in its design

The façade of the Gieves & Hawkes house is one that signifies both the height of sartorial elegance and the spirit of British adventure. Formerly occupied by the Royal Geographical Society, No1 Savile Row has been the home of pioneering, exploration and the British cultural history it inspired for more than 200 years. In the 19th century, both Gieves and Hawkes were prominent outfitters to some of the Royal Geographical Society’s most revolutionary adventurers and botanists. This season, creative director John Harrison has taken cues from this part of the house’s history, reimagining the lifestyles and discoveries of Britain’s most famous explorers in flora, fauna and soft, sweeping silhouettes. The resulting collection is one of luxurious design, sophisticated, semi-structured jackets and saturated tropical tones that mix elegant looks with sharp functionality.

Super fine textured linen shirts and lightweight knitwear dominate the collection’s casual wear – ideal for lazy summer afternoons in the country. Warm sand, bold khaki, navy and powder blue make frequent appearances throughout the collection, colouring everything from formal wear to casual chinos. Cut in slim fit, classic fit, or a five-pocket style, Spring / Summer 19’s range of garment-dyed chinos offers a sophisticated, versatile summer option for the modern man. The season’s eveningwear is a collection of beautifully crafted silk and jacquard pieces that pay fitting tribute to Harrison’s botanical inspiration. Standout looks include the navy and copper floral silk jacquard evening jacket, hand-tailored from English-woven silk with shawl lapels and covered buttons. The double-breasted evening suit in midnight blue and the pure silk evening jacket with a tropical cactus and aloe jacquard running across its sleeves and chest is ideal for the more adventurous man. Woven piece by piece, cut and pattern-matched by hand, it perfectly showcases the tailor’s craft. Shot on location in the old town of Ibiza, the new campaign reinforces Gieves & Hawkes’ approach to menswear design this season: luxurious, contemporary and audaciously exotic. In everything from elegant tailoring to impactful occasion wear and refined weekend wear, Spring / Summer 19 offers a versatile summer wardrobe for the sophisticated worldly man.

GRAFF’S TWOMBLY INSPIRED COLLECTION A FUSION OF MODERN ART AND HIGH JEWELS Among the world’s foremost collectors of modern art, Laurence Graff ’s enduring love of the 20th century art scene has inspired a poetic new jewellery collection. Mirroring the calligraphic paint strokes of the American artist Cy Twombly, seamless swirls flow playfully from one gemstone to the next.

The looping lines and abstract doodles of the American artist Cy Twombly formed the starting point for Graff designers, who have created a collection of contemporary masterpieces where the spontaneity of the gesture – the impromptu line animating the pieces – is painted in scintillating gemstones.

Laurence Graff, chairman of Graff Diamonds who is best known as the “king of diamonds,” is a passionate art collector whose own collection of 20th-century masterpieces includes works by Twombly alongside other pieces by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Pablo Picasso but it was Twombly’s energy and spontaneity that prompted the creation of this new high jewellery collection Twombly’s signature look used flowing lines of doodles and handwriting and the disruptive power of graffiti to make his work powerful and beautiful. The new Graff collection adopts these smooth flowing lines to create jewels in mesmerising spirals and loops. Graff master mounters spent months re-imaging the calligraphic style of Twombly setting diamonds and baguette cut rubies invisibly so that free-flowing forms daubed on vast canvases become neverending spirals of gems that encircle the neck, cascade downwards from the ear lobe and embrace the finger.

The centre-piece of the Graff collection is a white diamond necklace featuring 1,071 individual stones set around a 4.06-carat pear-shaped diamond, its lines looping around a total of 83.58 carats of diamonds. The matching earrings feature a pair of stunning pear-shaped diamonds, set around more than 200 round and baguette-cut diamonds. Two rings in this striking parure offer a choice of two shapes, each with a centred diamond set on swirling ribbons of white diamonds. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the classic yet imaginative design aesthetic of this ‘art inspired jewel collection’ is perfectly captured in these extravagantly precious pieces, which, like the finest art, inspire quiet contemplation.

Presented at last month’s 21st Habanos Festival in Havana, the new 45 mm Pilot Type 20 Chronograph Trinidad Edition comes in three variations: rose, yellow, and white gold, each limited to 50

pieces. The rich brown dials with contrasting sub-dials display large beige luminescent Arabic numer-

als, a distinctive tobacco leaf pattern, as well as Zenith and Trinidad logos. These collector’s items are teamed with Trinidad logo patterned Havana brown calfskin leather straps featuring a protective rubber lining with the same logo on the inner side, secured by a pin buckle in 18-carat rose, yellow or white gold matching the case.

Under the dial beats the famous El Primero chronograph movement, a descendant of the world’s

most accurate series-made chronograph calibre that debuted in 1969. El Primero was the world’s

first integrated automatic chronograph with a high-frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour (5Hz), enabling it to measure elapsed intervals to the nearest 1/10 of a second.

To mark its flagship movement’s half century, Zenith unveiled a special anniversary boxed set of three

chronographs that trace its evolution over the decades from a faithful reproduction of the original to a Chronomaster El Primero with optimized movement to the futuristic Defy El Primero 21, which measures intervals to 1/100th of a second. One space has been left open for an even more precise 1/1000th of a second El Primero still to come.

Limited to 50, the $50,000 sets include a visit to the factory in Le Locle, Switzerland, for El Primero’s most ardent fans.

It has a sinewy new bracelet that is flexible, inspired by the original Serpenti watch, with links that mimic the shape of the case, and a serpent’s head. The crown is topped by a pink rubellite cabochon, a nod to Bulgari’s roots as a jeweller. There are several options, including rose, yellow, white gold and two diamond pavé options.

LADY MARIE-OLGA WATCH This elegant jewellery watch is inspired by Marie-Olga Charriol, wife of the company founder and an accomplished equestrian rider. Subtle details of the design are inspired by her passion for classical riding, which is linked to watchmaking by the same timeless values: rigor, purity, transmission and passion. The silhouette of the watch reflects the gestures of the rider on her horse, combining voltes and figures, movements performed by the horses. The stirrup-shaped lug at 6 o’clock on the case also emphasizes the equestrian theme. The dial is mother-of-pearl, with a shimmer of watercolor shades, and the case is set with diamonds. Charriol’s signature steel cable is lightweight and ultra-feminine, a symbol of the strength and loving spirituality of women.

44 LUXURY LIVING

Unearthed at the Lucara Karowe mine in north-central Botswana, the hypnotic Lesedi La Rona weighed a record-breaking 1,109 carats in its rough form was the largest gem quality rough diamond discovered in over 100 years. This magnificent stone has been identified by The Gemological Institute of America as possessing exceptional quality and transparency, earning the full significance of its name, which means ‘our light’ in Botswana’s Tswana language. Graff, which has cut and polished the majority of the 20 largest diamonds, discovered this century took over 18 months to cut and polish the stone. Even with their experience, the Lesedi La Rona presented a unique challenge to Graff ’s expert gemmologists. They had never analysed a stone of such a prodigious size so using highly sophisticated software, custom built to tackle the magnitude of the Lesedi La Rona, Graff ’s gemmologists looked deep within the diamond, plotting the natural imperfections inside the stone with complete precision. At first, the analysis of the stone concluded that a 300 carat principal diamond simply wasn’t achievable. Laurence Graff, however, was convinced that it could be possible and he set the challenge to the team of expert gemmologists and highly skilled polishers.

Upon sending the finished stone to the GIA for certification, it was confirmed that Laurence Graff ’s challenge had not only been met, but exceeded. The Graff Lesedi La Rona weighed an awe-inspiring 302.37 carats and was a top D colour, with exceptional clarity and both excellent polish and symmetry. Alongside the Graff Lesedi La Rona, a total of 66 beautiful “satellite” diamonds were also polished from the world-famous rough diamond, ranging in size from under a carat to in excess of 100 carats. Each diamond is inscribed with Graff, Lesedi La Rona and its unique GIA number, and accompanied with a certificate of authenticity from Graff and the GIA. 45

THe mASTer OF reINveNTION u Karl Lagerfeld was the master of reinvention, having repeatedly transformed himself as well as his labels and will forever be remembered as one of the most acclaimed fashion designers in the world. Known for his bold designs and constant reinvention, Karl Lagerfeld will be regarded in history as one of the most prolific designers of the last two centuries hailed by Vogue magazine as the “unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment,” Lagerfeld had a talent for seeing the fashion of the future. Although he often lied about his date of birth it is believed he was born in 1933, Hamburg, Germany to a wealthy German businessman father and Swedish mother. From an early age, Lagerfeld expressed an interest in design and fashion. As a child he often cut out pictures from fashion magazines. He was also known to be critical of what others wore to school, but it wasn’t until his teen years, after his family had returned to Hamburg following the end of WW11, that Lagerfeld immersed himself in the world of high fashion taking the bold decision to emigrate to Paris at the tender age of just 14, where he studied drawing and history. His life changed when at 21, he submitted a series of sketches and fabric samples to a design competition organized by the secretariat international de la laine (International Wool Association), Yves Saint Laurent also entered the competition and was the start of what was to become a fierce professional rivalry. Lagerfeld’s design won him the coat category while Yves Saint Laurent won the dress. Work placement followed with a position with French designer Pierre Balmain, first as a junior assistant, and later as an apprentice. It was a demanding position, and the young designer remained there for three years before becoming art director for the now defunct Jean Patou, where he remained for five seemingly calm years. In the emerging world of 1960’s ready to wear fashion Lagerfeld plunged into a career as a freelance stylist designing collections for Chloe, Fendi and others. Lagerfeld became known in the fashion industry for his innovative, in the- moment styles. By the 1980s, Lagerfeld had become a major star in the fashion world, he was a favourite among the press, who loved to chronicle his changing tastes he kept company with major stars, including his good friend Andy Warhol and dressed countless high society women.

LUXURY LIVING FASHION u

Loving a challenge he became Art Director of ailing brand Chanel who following its eponymous founders death in 1971 had fallen in stale existence of twin sets and pearls and did what many thought impossible bringing a near-dead brand back to life with a revamped popular ready-to-wear line-up. Celebrities flocked to the new sexy Chanel and seizing upon the marketing possibilities he teamed up with the movie director Baz Luhrmann and engaged in his other love art and photography. Moving behind the lens he engaged actress Nicole Kidman and began making short promotional films; helater directed the actresses Cara Delevingne and Kristen Stewart and the singer Pharrell Williams in his own minifeatures about Chanel. His constant interest in new experiences led Lagerfeld to illustrate Hans Christian Anderson”s The Emperor”s New Clothes “. He created as well opera costumes for La Scala, the Florence opera house, the Burgtheater of Vienna and for the Salzbourg festival, and the Monte Carlo ballet. The turn of the century saw Lagerfeld adopt a new look, redefining his image he paired a dandy ponytail wrapped in ribbon with what was to become his trademark look of fingerless gloves to camouflage the effects of ageing and large dark glasses. He embarked on a self -imposed diet once a gym-obsessed bodybuilder in his youth, he kicked his Coca-Cola addiction and shed nearly 103 pounds (47 Kilograms), and released the Karl Lagerfeld Diet book “THE 3D DIET (Designer, Doctor, Diet).” It sold in tens of thousands around the world with Lagerfeld commenting “I think that fashion is the healthiest motivation for losing weight.”

50 LUXURY LIVING

u Over the years, Lagerfeld desire to design was not just been limited to high end brands, in 2004, he collaborated with the international Swedish fashion brand H&M where he offered a limited range of different Lagerfeld clothes in chosen outlets for both women and men selling out within just two days, he designed two footwear lines for Italian label Hogan a line of glassware for the Swedish company Orrefors, a limited edition kitchenware design for Christofle and a limited-edition Steiff teddy bear in his own likeness. A creative polymath, Lagerfeld became affectionately known as the “Kaiser” because of his German roots and received many accolades over the years. Nicole Kidman presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2002, and the British Fashion Council recognized him in 2015 with its Outstanding Achievement Award. He also received France’s highest honor commander of the Légion d’Honneur, from then President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2010. Never afraid to say what he thought in recent years Lagerfeld became more famous for his quips about the world of fashion, celebrity and tattoo’s;

On Fashion:

“Chic is a kind of mayonnaise, either it tastes, or it doesn’t.”

On Tattoo’s:

“I think tattoos are horrible. It’s like living in a Pucci dress full-time”

On being Quotable:

“Everything I say is a joke. I am a joke myself.” 51

The use of titanium keeps the tourbillon cage lightweight, ensuring that despite its size, it can rotate without losing precision. ECO FRIENDLY

LUXURY CRUISING As a leader in sustainable cruising through the Galapagos Islands, EcoVentura have announced the upcoming launch of MV Theory, their newest premium-class vessel and sister ship to the MV Origin that launched in 2016

66 LUXURY LIVING

Founded in 1990, EcoVentura use almost 30 years of experience and knowledge to design and custom build the very best small ships, offering unsurpassed levels of speed, environmental technology, and comfort on voyages of discovery around the Galapagos Islands.

Named after Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, MV Origin will continue Ecoventura’s commitment to bringing five-star luxury to the seas with the environment in mind.

Identical to sister ship MV Origin, MV Theory will be a 20-passenger mega-yacht featuring 10 premium cabins with a minimalist chic design, all located on the same deck.

67

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

Inspired by the calming nature of the Galapagos Islands, Designer Cindy Muirragui incorporated a sophisticated neutral color palette of silvers, ash and dusty grey tones to complement the simple

white linens. Careful consideration has gone into soundproofing to limit the amount of engine noise audible from the 10 deluxe staterooms. Designed with discerning couples, families, and

multi-generational travelers in mind, MV Theory’s cabins feature twin beds that can convert into full king-size beds. The ship also offers connecting rooms for families as well as triple cabins.

All of the spacious staterooms are located on the same deck of the ship and are the same size. To

connect guests with the Galapagos’ one-of-a-kind wildlife, each room features large, three-panel panoramic windows, as well as a private bathroom with essential modern luxuries, including a rainfall shower, hairdryers, plush towels, bathrobes, and eco-friendly biodegradable soaps and shampoos.

The MV Theory will also include similar on-board amenities that guests of the MV Origin have grown to enjoy and love, including a full-time concierge, fitness center, a sundeck with chic

loungers and daybeds, an open-bar policy, and a Jacuzzi. Guests can also enjoy locally inspired

Ecuadorian cuisine from the comfort of the ship’s dining room or in an al-fresco setting on the

sundeck. MV Theory will also offer sustainable, plant-based vegetarian and gluten-free meals, catering to a variety of food preferences. MV Theory just like it’s sister vessel are official member of the Relais & Châteaux Collection.

u

68 LUXURY LIVING

The Theory will operate on our current schedule, which rotates between two A & B seven-night itineraries, and can be combined into a comprehensive two-week excursion: Itinerary A will

follow a southern/central route, and Itinerary B will follow a northern/western route. On both

routes, guests can partake in daily excursions on shore, optional snorkel or glass-bottom boat and

kayaking or SUP tours and will come face-to-face with the Galapagos’ freely wondering wildlife, including sea lions, blue-footed boobies, penguins, tortoises and more.

In addition to offering the most favorable naturalist-to-passenger ratio in the region with just 10 guests per guide, MV Theory has the most favorable passenger-to-crew ratio in this segment with 14 crew members.

Joining MV Origin as one of the most environmentally friendly vessels in the Galapagos, MV Theory will reduce fossil fuel consumption by more than 30% from similar yachts in the

archipelago! The curved bow was designed to cut through the waves for smoother sailing, increased fuel efficiency, and less drag allowing a cruising speed of 12 knots. This also allows the ship to travel further and access landing spots many other ships can’t reach, reducing pressure on popular tourist hotspots.

As an eco-conscious company, EcoVentura are passionate about conservation and protection of

the Galapagos, as such, water saving measures include reusable bottles, a specially designed water treatment plan, and ecological toilets.

Rates for 2019 start at $7,850 per person based on double occupancy, and include all meals,

beverages and snacks, Captain’s welcome and farewell social gatherings, an open-bar policy, guided shore excursions, briefings and enrichment lectures, snorkel equipment, sea kayaks, paddle boards, airport check-in, meet and greet upon arrival and transfers in the islands between the airport and dock.

The Titanic when it set sail in 1912 was the ultimate in luxury, but sadly for 1,500 of its 2,240 pas-

sengers and crew its untimely sideswiping of an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton

to New York saw the vessel sink to the watery depths of the Atlantic. Since its discovery in 1985, only a handful of people have set eyes on the Titanic – including James Cameron who used footage of the wreck in his 1997 blockbuster film.

The epic adventure will begin with an overnight sail to the wreck and then accompanied by a team of

professional, Titan a submersible will dive throughout the Titanic on a detailed guide taking in the ship’s deck, bridge, radio room and grand staircase, chefs will then re-create a 10-course dinner that

first class passengers ate aboard the ship before the Titanic collided with the iceberg. BUILDING A NEW LUXURY HOTEL OUT OF A PIECE OF LONDON’S HISTORY

84 LUXURY LIVING

It is an iconic building steeped in British criminal history once home to the London Metropolitan Police force but the former Great Scotland Yard has now been converted into city’s newest five-star luxury hotel. 85

LUXURY LIVING TRAVEL u

Purchased back in 2015 by Indian billionaire Yusuff Ali for £110million and following a

£75million makeover the former HQ of the

Metropolitan Police where the famous crimes of Plaistow Marshes (1864) and Jack the Ripper (1888) were once investigated will now play host to that of the super wealthy with reservations for a

hotel room expected to cost up to £10,000 a night. The seven-store hotel, located at 1-5 Great Scotland Yard will provide 153 bedrooms and

suites. The 11 suites, including a spectacular

townhouse suite, are created from part of the original Scotland Yard Police premises and will feature views of Westminster Abbey, Nelson’s Column and Buckingham Palace.

u The

history

of

the

building

has

been

sympathetically preserved during the renovations with certain features give a subtle nod to infamous

criminals from the past. A large chandelier made up of glass shards which hangs in the main

cocktail area refers to the Forty Elephants, a 19thcentury gang of female thieves that would smash jewellery shop windows to steal the goods inside.

The old police cells have been transformed into meeting rooms and workspace areas which can be rented there will also be a main cocktail bar, palm

court style lounge, signature restaurant, library, gymnasium, 120 seater main conference room/

ballroom, meeting rooms and function/private dining rooms and a secret whisky bar.

Set to open later this year the hotel will be part of the Hyatt Unbound Collection the first UK

property to join the collection of upscale and luxury individual hotels which focus on the

history and experiences of some of the world’s hidden gems.

THE SCAR ON THE FACE OF PARIS

OR IS IT?

It was once described as an architectural “obscenity”, but as the Louvre’s glass pyramid celebrates its thirtieth anniversary this modernist pyramid plonked in the middle of the French capital has now become a cherished national icon

100 LUXURY LIVING

Thirty years ago, a “gigantic, ruinous gadget” appeared in the middle of Paris. The thoroughly modern 22-meter-high glass-and-steel pyramid flanked by three smaller pyramids seated in the courtyard of a centuries-old palace that was once the residence of French kings was tantamount to blasphemy and so angered French traditionalists in 1989 that its Chinese-American architect, I.M. Pei, was hounded on the streets. For many, “The first year and a half was really hell,” said Pei, who will be 102 next month, “I couldn’t walk the streets of Paris without people looking at me as if to say: ‘There you go again. What are you doing here? What are you doing to our great Louvre?’” Pei who was commissioned by the then president of France, François Mitterand, first unveiled his design in 1984 and the reactions were as sharp as they were brutal. Critics slammed Pei’s pyramid as “an eyesore”, “an architectural joke”, “an anachronistic intrusion of Egyptian death symbolism in the heart of Paris.” Such was the hatred for this project that there was a real fear that during its construction, Mitterand may not get re-elected and the project would be stopped. So it had to be constructed out of sequence: the glass pyramid structure was built first, before the base. The rational being was that it would have been harder to abandon the project once it existed in concrete form. But as with the outcry over the “useless and monstrous” Eiffel Tower in 1889, the French have had a change of heart about the Pyramide du Louvre.

101

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Pei’s masterstroke was to create a subterranean entrance hall - the Hall Napoléon - with access to the three different wings offering space for shops, restaurants and other amenities, it also provided another entrance, and, perhaps most important, gave the centuries-old institution a distinctive symbol. Such was his success that the conservative French daily Le Figaro, which had led the campaign against his “atrocious” design for years, celebrated his genius with a supplement on the 10th anniversary of the pyramid’s opening in 1999. The pyramid as we see it today is unchanged from Pei’s vision. It consists of 70 triangular and 673 diamond-shaped glass panes however some conspiracy theorist claim that there are in fact 666 which is the sign of the devil! Standing 22 metres high and to ensure the pyramid’s glass remains clean trained mountain climbers scale the shape to polish the glass.

102 LUXURY LIVING

Now, Pei’s pyramid is heralded as a French monument. The structure has been the venue for public gatherings, fashion shows, music video’s screenings, and political rallies. It’s also been a favourite backdrop for tourists visiting the French capital. In large measures, Pei’s addition has helped the Louvre become Europe’s most popular museum on social media, with over 3 million geotagged images. The Louvre’s current director, Jean-Luc Martinez, believes that Pei’s architecture has been central to the museum’s growth and success. More than 10 million people passed through the museum’s doors last year, compared to that of 3.5 million in 1989.

To celebrate its 30th birthday, French artist JR created a huge new trompe l’oeil installation that created the illusion of a larger pyramid emerging from rocks as if it had been discovered by an archaeological excavation.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE LOUVRE

1

The Biggest Museum in the World

The Louvre is the biggest museum in the world. It is so big that it is humanely impossible to see all the museum has to offer in one visit. How long would it take you? Well, if you ever have 100 days spare, you could probably squeeze in every piece of art, but you could only spend 30 seconds on each piece – and that’s if you were there all day, every day.

The museum offers 380,000 pieces in total – but not all of collection is exhibited to the public.

The Louvre Museums also extend outside the confines of the 16th century museum and palace, as it

2

is connected to the Musée National Eugene-Delacroix, and fronts onto the Tulleries Gardens, which is Paris’ oldest park.

Museum’s Origins

The Musée du Louvre was not originally a museum. It was a fortress that was built in 1190. In the 16th century, it was turned from a fortress into a royal palace. It was only in 1793, after the French Monarchy moved to the Palace of Versailles, that the first Louvre museum was opened to the public,

104 LUXURY LIVING

and offered just 537 paintings.

3

Most Famous Resident

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa is undoubtedly one of the most famous pieces of art in the Louvre, with people from all walks of life travelling to the museum to catch a glimpse of the world famous painting.

What you may not know about the Mona Lisa is that it isn’t as big as everyone thinks, as the dimension of the painting is actually just 21 x 30 inches (53 x 77cms) – which is just a little bit larger than an A2 piece of paper.

The Mona Lisa also has its own bodyguards and is protected by bulletproof glass; however, it was stolen in 1911 before being returned to the Louvre just two years later. Mona Lisa’s identity is a mystery, and no-one has ever been able to come to a decision as to why she is smiling that way. Many believe she is the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, as her real name in Italian is Lisa Gioconda. Others believe Mona Lisa is a self-portrait and an allusion to Leonardo da Vinci’s

4

supposed homosexuality.

The 5 Pyramids of the Louvre

The pyramid used as an entrance in the Louvre’s courtyard has the exact same proportions as the Great Pyramid of Giza. The choice of this figure also serves as a reminder of the importance of the Egyptian antiquities collection inside the museum, as does the Obelisk in Place de la Concorde not far from there, the other side of the Jardin des Tuileries. At its base, the pyramid measures 116 feet wide and 70 feet high. 95 tons of steel and 105 tons of aluminium support the structure.

The main pyramid is accompanied by three smaller ones. They have been positioned to create light shafts for access to the museum’s collections. Lastly, the inverted pyramid is the one visible from underground, when you use the Carrousel en-

5

trance to the Louvre. In the proper sense, it is an upside down, suspended pyramid.

Mastering the Masters

Few museums sanction forgeries of any type, but the Louvre recognizes the curious subculture of artists who enjoy trying to replicate famous works. Every day from 9:30 to 1:30, just 150 “copyists” are allowed to set up easels and study paintings while working on their own replicas. There is a one-year waiting list for this privilege.

The appeal for the the “copyists” is to try to gain insight into the process behind masterpieces; the museum insists that each canvas is signed, dated, and stamped three times before even a drop of paint hits it. And even then, it must not be the same size as the original or include the artist’s signature.

Putting the Cash intO

Kardashian

Love them or loathe then the Kardashian tribe certainly know how to curry controversy and make money. Having dominated our television screens and pop culture for over a decade the world has witnessed every high, low and in-between this reality family has chucked at us and we the public have lapped it up... 107

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

Most recently Forbes announced that the youngest member of the family Kylie Jenner was set to become the youngest ever self-made billionaire at the tender age of just 21. According to Forbes’s

estimated appraisal her cosmetic company, reality television show, various sponsorships, and endorsements, have all a accumulated over $900 million which they estimate will soon reach the $1

billion mark but how did such a young starlet who up until recent years had shunned the limelight who by all accounts was literally forced into the spotlight by her older siblings on the hit reality show Keeping up with the Kardashian’s manage to build such an empire?

We all know that it was Kim who initially propelled the family into the spotlight with a leaked video and then “momager” Kris Jenner’s savvy business endeavours but for all intents and purposes the family’s business model is based around it’s fan base and more importantly there millions of social media followers who will happily purchase anything and everything the girls endorse.

108 LUXURY LIVING

Building on this online obsession with the family, two years ago Kylie launched her Kylie Cosmetics brand offering lip kits for just $29 and since then her brand has gone on to sell over $630 million worth of makeup, the irony of this multi-million dollar brand is that it seems no real effort is put into it, apparently it all takes place at her mom’s kitchen table with a just a small team of twelve employees ( five are part timers) who happily spend their day posting out hourly updates onto Kylies Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter accounts ensuring that her 150million followers know what colour lipstick she is wearing or what shade of eye shade she is rocking for the day, most recently Kylie added eyewear and concealer to her brand, everything i outsourced; manufacturing and packaging is outsourced to Seed Beauty with sales, fulfilment and online presence managed by e-commerce platform Shopify. Many have claimed the Kardashians are a family famous for doing nothing and if this business setup is anything to go by they could be right but one thing for sure is they are very good at teasing and salting their followers appetite, prior to the initial launch of Kylie’s lip kits she spent month’s teasing her followers with images of her pouting lips in an array of colours and then announced the launch via social media just a day before they went on sale, unsurprisingly the kits sold out in less than a minute.

u But as everyone knows fame and social media is a fickle, fickle world all it would take is for Kylie’s star to fall out of public favour and her business would be reduced to nothing, could she sell it on to one of the other major beauty brands looking to build and grow a younger generation brand probably not, once her star starts to wane she’ll almost certainly move onto something new and in all reality does she need an exit plan when she netting over $230million in profits for doing hardly anything than having here picture taken!

112 LUXURY LIVING

With its epic storylines of treachery and nobility, family and honor, ambition and love, and death and survival the hit HBO® series Game of Thrones has captured the imagination of fans globally and made it one of the most popular shows on television.

ThE IRON ThRONE PEN To represent the intricacies and complexities of the Iron Throne itself, Montegrappa’ s artisans have fashioned a cap formed of overlapping swords representing the seven kingdoms. Their hilts rise above the cap’s top to create a crown, the pommels and blades

running the length of the cap itself. Standing proud is a sword that serves as the pocket clip, its hilt bearing a fiery red ruby.

At the cap’s top, surrounded by the swords’ hilts, is the Game of Thrones logo. The pen’s

barrel, a truly virtuous artwork fashioned in precious metal with the lost-wax casting

technique, represents the saga through symbols evocative of the houses, from dragons to stags. Details of the pen are enriched with Flaming White celluloid.

The Iron Throne Pen is limited to 300 fountain pens and 300 rollerball pens in Sterling

Silver with Vermeil accents, denoting the year of settlement of the last of the Targaryen Kings (300AC). 7 exclusive fountain and 7 rollerball pens cast in solid 18k Gold represent the number of Kingdoms. The fountain pen is piston fed, with nib traditionally made in 18k gold, engraved with the image of the throne itself.

KNIGHT FRANK LAUNCHES 2019’S EDITION OF THE

WEALTH REPORT

Knight Frank’s flagship publication - The Wealth Report - takes an in-depth look at the things that interest and influence its high-end clientele, from art to whisky and fine wine, to private jets, property investment hotspots and classic cars 115

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

We provide a whistle-stop tour of the sharpest insights inside of the 2019 edition of The Wealth Report and predict the shape of the year ahead

116 LUXURY LIVING

The rise of The super-rich Despite a darkening economic outlook, wealth creation will remain a constant in 2019. The global UHNWI population is forecast to rise by 22% over the next five years, meaning an extra 43,000 people will be worth more than US$30 million by 2023.

Existing UHNWIs expect their wealth to increase over the next 12 months, with confidence most marked in the US where 80% expect to be better off.

Hard Brexit, no Brexit, Brexit-lite: whatever the outcome, London will remain the leading global

wealth centre in 2019. With the world’s largest UHNWI population, the city sweeps the board in our annual City Wealth Index, pushing its only serious rival, New York, into second place.

Asia’s strong economic performance (it hosts eight of the top ten countries with the fastest growing

UHNWI populations) means 2019 will be the year the number of US$ millionaires globally exceeds 20 million for the first time. India will lead the annual growth with 39%, followed by the Philippines (38%) and China (35%).

117

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u

118 LUXURY LIVING

Global GeopoliTics The desire for mobility means wealth exporting nations will begin to watch their currency and foreign reserves increasingly closely.

Recent capital controls in China will remain in place, while in India a two-year 144% increase in outbound remittances will create risks of additional controls – but the strength of economic growth will delay action for 2019 at least.

As some governments race to attract wealth, a backlash will grow with the OECD and the EU,

among others, placing more countries under the microscope as efforts to combat tax evasion increase.

ciTizenship schemes Hoops or not, the wealthy will continue to demand access to global markets, especially as emerging economies see growth rates slow and the search for diversification grows.

A record 26% of global UHNWIs will begin to plan for emigration this year, and to help them a

record number of countries will offer citizenship and residency through investment schemes, with Moldova and Montenegro the latest to offer themselves as wealth havens.

119

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u u

WealTh floWs around The Globe As wealth increases, 2019 will see governments settle into two camps: the first will try to attract more of it; the second will seek to push it away.

In the former camp sits Italy, where a new “nondom” regime will kick fully into gear this year, result-

ing in a growing band of wealthy migrants enjoying la dolce vita in return for a fixed tax payment of €100,000 on their global income.

Conversely, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and others will make wealthy nonresidents jump through ever larger hoops to access their property markets.

fuTure invesTmenT Trends As wealth moves more rapidly around the world, investors will become increasingly active in their

investment strategies. Rising interest rates and the end of quantitative easing mean we are reaching the end of the “everything bubble”.

In the past decade it was enough to buy classic cars, art or property and the generosity of central banks would help deliver super-charged returns.

As this process unwinds property investors will become increasingly focused on income, asset management and development opportunities.

121

LUXURY LIVING LIVING u u

secTors and ciTies To WaTch Investors in 2019 will increase their exposure to education facilities, student housing and “last mile” logistics property, as well as targeting office investment in key tech and innovation markets.

Expect slower price growth in key luxury residential markets, with more markets seeing values fall this year. As values adjust, buyers will feel the balance of power shift in their favour.

The search for deals will combine with currency movements to propel more purchasers into 2018’s “most unfashionable market” – London.

luxury invesTmenTs Beyond property, interest in the world of collectables will continue to expand into new areas. Expect a boom in investment in one drink in particular.

A 500% rise over the past decade in the Knight Frank Rare Whisky Index, new direct flights between

Edinburgh and Beijing, 40% annual growth in sales of Scotch to India and China, and a new record sale price of £1.2 million for a single bottle should have Scotland’s distillers raising a dram or two.

blockchain in acTion 2019 will be the year when theorising over the potential impact of blockchain gives way to an appre-

ciation of what it can achieve: helping to prove the authenticity of the US$2 trillion of luxury goods sold annually; confirming the ownership of art; enabling fractional ownership of some of the world’s most desirable collectibles; oh, and facilitating the creation of US$170,000 digital cats (yes, really). this facet of his character and our Master Blenders have done an amazing job at crafting a beautiful, extremely balanced Robusto cigar that will take aficionados on an exciting sensory journey”.

u THE LIMITED EDITION CIGARS The Traveller cigar is crafted in a beautiful Robusto 50 x 5 format, providing multi-layered notes of

wood and earth at the start, soon followed by sweet and spicy flavours. In the second-third, palate

pleasing stimulations of sweet creaminess develop, with elegant notes of coffee, leather and hints of

travel cases, and include a Boveda humidification device that turns them into travel humidors that will allow aficionados to embark their favourite cigars on their next journey. The icon applied to the

LG’S TV OF TOMORROW THE WORLD’S FIRST ROLLABLE OLED TV

LG Electronics defines the next generation of television

with the introduction of the world’s first rollable OLED TV scheduled to hit stores this year!

Showcased at CES Las Vegas earlier this year the LG

SIGNATURE OLED TV R re-imagines the everyday TV

with a revolutionary form factor. It might look like a normal 65-inch TV at first, but hit a button and the OLED screen slowly rolls into its brushed aluminum case, like a paper towel winding itself back up instead of being a giant black screen dominating your room.

Using the flexibility of an OLED panel made of organic materials, the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R can transform itself to offer three different viewing options - Full View, Line View and Zero View.

The Full View version delivers a large-screen viewing ex-

perience revealing the full extent of the contrast, depth and realism that has become synonymous with all LG TVs. The

remarkable AI picture and sound quality powered by LG’s

second generation Ɑ (Alpha) 9 intelligent processor and deep learning algorithm puts this breathtaking TV in a class of its own. Users can use their own voice to get things done with Amazon Alexa, a new addition to LG’s AI TV lineup

in 2019, and the support of Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. With AirPlay 2, users can easily play videos directly from their Apple devices, iTunes and other video apps, music or

photos to their LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R. With Apple HomeKit support, customers will be able to control their LG TV using the Home app or by asking Siri.

132 LUXURY LIVING

The Line View allows the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R to be partially unrolled, allowing for management of specific tasks that do not require the full TV screen. In Line View, users

can choose from features such as Clock mode to check the time and weather, Frame mode to enjoy family photos shared from a smartphone, Mood mode to create a more relaxing atmosphere as well as others including Music and Home Dashboard.

When in Zero View, all 65 inches of the LG SIGNATURE OLED TV R are hidden

from view and tucked away in the base. Even in Zero View, users can enjoy music and other audio content which resonate from the 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos

audio system. The premium bloodline is clearly evident in the entire unit, from the brushed aluminum casing to the quality wool speaker cover designed by Kvadrat of Denmark.

LG haven’t announced a price yet, but the company says this new revolutionary TV will be available in the second half of the year.

142 LUXURY LIVING

Champagne has played a singular role in the wine industry. For almost two centuries its golden bubbles have marked New Year’s, new arrivals, happy unions, and all kinds of good news. The drink of choice for royalty, the rich, and the famous, champagne has defied trends, remaining at every upscale gala. But next time you’re at an event, dressed in your finest, and you’re given a glass of something bubbly, don’t be surprised if it didn’t come from France at all. In recent years premier sparkling wine producers around the globe have been crafting bottles that defy expectations and deliver the festive fizz of champagne without the French label. Champagne’s complexities were historically impossible to mirror for two reasons: the region’s unique combination of chalk and limestone soils; and the traditional method used to make its standard sparklers, which involves two fermentations and precise blending. Unlike most wines, which simply ferment into drinkable pleasure, sparkling wines undergo a secondary fermentation that creates their signature bubbles. In champagne, that process occurs within each bottle, yielding multidimensional wines with an incredible depth of flavour. Over time, the big maisons defined their style based on this fermentation; the level of sweetness it left in the wines; and the aging regimen they received. The result was the development of replicable “house” styles. Over time, their reliable flavour profiles made France’s golden bubblies a safe bet for lovers of all things sparkling. Though winemakers the world over have long aspired to sit alongside champagne, their limitations traditionally let them down. Great bubbly requires a chilly climate, instantly ruling out many of the world’s prime vineyard locations.

PRoseCCo: BACK on the List But modern winemaking practices and a new understanding of terroirs is shrinking the gap between

tĂŞte-de-cuvĂŠe champagnes and other sparkling wines. Those made with a single fermentation, known

as the ancestral method, or carbonated in large tanks in the Charmat method of prosecco, are rapidly matching champagne on flavour and value.

In fact, even prosecco - long thought of as a lower-quality fizz - is now appearing with incredible

quality and longevity. Across the slopes of Asolo and the seven neighbouring hillsides that make up the Prosecco Asolo DOCG, innovative producers such as Bele Casel are proving their wines are more than mere mimosa mixers.

winds oF ChAnge Meanwhile in Sussex, in the south of England, France’s long-time rival wine growers are proving they have the terroir to match their prestigious neighbours. With chalk and limestone soils markedly similar to those in Champagne, even Taittinger is in on the United Kingdom’s burgeoning wine industry, having established a vineyard there in 2017. In the United States, French champagne houses have long been investing in new terroirs, with the likes of Chandon and Roederer setting up shop in California wine country. Roederer completely models its champagne style in California’s cool Anderson Valley, where its signature Estate Brut offers incredible value and toasty apple flavors.

gRAPe eXPeRiments Even in appellations where the traditional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay thrive, innovative vintners are investigating a wider range of grapes. In Oregon’s Willamette Valley, for example, De Ponte Cellars is making a bright, fresh-scented sparkler from Melon de Bourgogne, a traditional Loire Valley white. Despite having wildly different soils and terroir from the Champagne region, the wines are a tasty departure from tradition. In the southern hemisphere, Ken Forrester bottles a vibrant sparkling Chenin Blanc from seaside vineyards in South Africa. Bursting with citrus and cream flavours, its Sparklehorse bottling represents a unique counterpoint to mineral-driven champagnes. Australian Proseccos are following suit, as is Spain’s Penedès region, famous for cava, where luxury offerings from wineries like Recaredo rely on native Spanish grapes for their long-aged, brioche-scented Brut Nature cuvées.

LE BRISTOL PARIS HAILS 2019 AS

‘THE YEAR OF GASTRONOMY’

Long considered a bastion of gastronomic excellence, Le Bristol Paris holds three Michelin stars at revered Epicure, and one Michelin star at ‘brasserie de luxe’, 114 Faubourg. 2019 also marks 10 years of Frechon holding three Michelin stars at Epicure – a mean feat, in Paris’ ever-changing, increasingly competitive culinary scene

148 LUXURY LIVING

Built on the true values of craftsmanship, over the last 20 years Le Bristol Paris, part of the prestigious Oetker Collection, has been continually building upon its revered reputation as a true temple of gastronomy. This year, the hotel is delighted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of ‘defender of French cuisine’ and Michelin star Chef extraordinaire, Eric Frechon, as the leader of Le Bristol’s gastronomy, 10 years during which he has held three Michelin stars at Epicure.

u Hailed by foodies around the world as ‘Chef Royalty’, Eric Frechon has spent 35 years in restaurants. Having presided over some of Paris’ most prestigious kitchens throughout his career, he became Chef at Le Bristol in 1999. Notably, before this he was sous-chef to Christian Constant at Le Crillon, where he earnt the title of Meilleur Ouvrier de France (Best Craftsman of France). He also won acclaim for his bistro at the Buttes-Chaumont, where he had worked as commis chef in 1982. In his first year at Le Bristol Paris, Frechon earnt his first Michelin star, and by 2009 he held three which he has never relinquished and was bestowed with the Légion d’Honneur. When 114 Faubourg opened at the hotel in 2013, under Frechon’s leadership it was immediately awarded one Michelin star. A celebrated name, unanimously hailed by critics and gourmets the world over, Frechon has since raised Le Bristol to become the hotel to bear the most Michelin stars in Paris.

149

LUXURY LIVING DINING u

To celebrate the special anniversary, Le Bristol Paris has created a nine-course menu of haute cuisine comprising all of Frechon’s finest signature dishes, each dish marking his rise through the ranks of

Michelin acclaim. As he was awarded his first star in 1999, the first of the nine courses celebrates

with caviar from Sologne, mousseline potatoes and smoked haddock. 2001 was the second Michelin

star, and for this Frechon has brought back his world-famous, cherished gratinéed stuffed macaroni

with black truffle, artichoke and duck foie gras. 2009 was the year of his third star, which he marks

with one of his most celebrated dishes, the spectacular Bresse Farm Hen poached with wine, cray fish, sweet offal and black truffle.

This unforgettable menu is a true sensory culmination of the longstanding collaboration between a

Chef and a Palace Hotel. Chef Eric Frechon comments: “2019 is a significant year for me; it marks my twentieth year as Chef at this hotel that I so admire. I have imagined this anniversary menu of my great signatures dishes over the past twenty years, and I hope my guests will enjoy the dishes as much as I enjoy cooking for them.”

u

150 LUXURY LIVING

This year, Chef Frechon has also installed a working flour mill at the hotel, making Le Bristol Paris

today the first and only hotel in Paris to produce its own homemade fresh flour from ancient wheats, bringing the innovative concept of ‘Living Bread’ to its guests. Frechon has always considered bread

to be the first and most important encounter a guest has at the dining table, setting the tone for the rest of their meal. In his quest to serve the best bread possible, he travelled to the hills of Cucugan in

Corbieres to meet with the master of ‘Living Bread’, Roland Feuillas – a man who has dedicated his

entire life to bread. The 100% natural Living Bread is made from heirloom seeds gathered by Feuillas which belong to different varieties of high-quality wheats such as Spelt, Emmer and Khorasan. These wheats offer unparalleled nutritional value and flavour from seed to bread, reflecting the commit-

ments of both Roland Feuillas and Eric Frechon to reinventing a relationship of respect with earth

and nature. Frechon was inspired by these methods of using freshly ground ‘living’ flour every day, resulting in his creation of the most natural tasting, healthy bread possible at Le Bristol Paris. Feuil-

las was even brought to Le Bristol Paris to train and educate the bakers, cooks and those serving the bread in the restaurants in his methods, but there was still a vital element missing: a mill to grind the flour for immediate use – now, complete.

Frechon’s extraordinary signature style is all about terroir; a sense of place. He delights in matching unusual ingredients to astounding effect, with his signature creations having become some of those

unforgettable dishes people travel to Paris just to experience. Meanwhile, Le Bristol Paris has exuded

Parisian joie de vivre since 1925 and, has long been celebrated for the hotel’s definition of luxury: service of the highest order through sincerity. The most elite of travellers continue to choose the hotel for a first-class Parisian experience, and it has become a benchmark for luxury hotels all around the

world. Le Bristol Paris perpetuates its legend through enduring values, and a shared passion for the art of French living, together with the hotel’s historic grandeur, has earnt Le Bristol “Palace” distinction and the loyalty of the world’s most discerning of guests.

The year 2020 is also the 90th anniversary of the legendary Pininfarina SpA design house, which has taken the design brief for the Battista and produced a classic Pininfarina: an elegant form that seamlessly integrates the car’s innovative engineering solutions to deliver unprecedented performance. It is the same design principle of form and function in harmony as seen in classic Pininfarina cars reaching back to the Cisitalia 202 of 1947 and through more than 100 Ferraris, the most recent of which was launched this decade. The Pininfarina Battista’s place in automotive history is defined by its name. It is the first in a range of purely electric, zero-emissions, luxury cars solely branded Pininfarina, delivering on a long-held family dream that has been carried by founder, Battista, his son Sergio, and his grandson, the current Pininfarina SpA Chairman, Paolo. Never before has a new brand and its first car been launched with such an emotive past, relevance for the present, and potential for the future – the Battista embodies timeless design as a piece of art. The Battista will set new standards in performance and desirability for an electric car. It will be the first poster car for the EV-generation and the halo model for a range of luxury electric cars from Automobili Pininfarina. It is more than simply a new car reveal, but a pivotal moment in time for the new automotive environment: the first zero-emissions, Italian luxury car.

Delivering on a long-held Pininfarina family dream and a new target of zero emissions with extreme power, the Battista is the first solely Pininfarina-badged car and delivers unprecedented performance. Presented as part of the hypercar’s World Premiere in Geneva the Pininfarina Battista represent a new pinnacle of desirability for electric cars, stylishly resolving the paradox of beauty and performance in a pure, elegant and timeless Italian design. When it arrives in 2020, the Battista will be the most powerful car ever designed and built in Italy and it will deliver a level of performance that is un-achievable today in any road-legal sports car featuring internal combustion engine technology. Faster than a current Formula 1 race car in its 0 -100 km/h sub-two second sprint, and with 1,900 hp and 2,300 Nm torque on tap, the Battista will combine extreme engineering and technology in a zero emissions package.

BUGATTI UNVEILS “LA VOITURE NOIRE” THE WORLD’S MOST EXPENSIVE CAR French luxury brand Bugatti once again reveals its heritage and luxury expertise in the luxury car market proving that it makes the world’s most powerful, most luxurious and most exclusive hyper sports cars with its one-off car “La Voiture Noire1.“

176 LUXURY LIVING

LUXURY LIVING POWER u For months Bugatti have been teasing us about a one off creation and today thet have taken the wraps

off its latest stealth-like creation - a one-of-a-kind hyper-car that will cost the owner a whopping €11 million.

La Voiture Noire is a far more than a modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti’s Type 57 SC Atlantic. It is a feast of aesthetics,” says Stephan Winkelmann. With its extended front end and the distinctive

Bugatti C-line, the “Voiture Noire“ creates an elongated impression with the elegant waistline defining the contours of the coupé.

Purism and elegance are reflected in the surfaces and the clear lines. The bumpers are smoothly

integrated into the body and the windscreen seems to flow seamlessly into the windows at the sides like the visor on a helmet. Without any irritating lines, the surface is “all of a piece” and there is

nothing to disturb the optical flow. This means that the hyper sports car has changed its attitude and become a grand tourisme – ideal for comfortable travel on long trips.

Every single component has been handcrafted and the carbon fibre body has a deep black gloss only interrupted by the ultrafine fibre structure. This is a material that has been handled perfectly,” says

Bugatti designer Etienne Salomé. “We worked long and hard on this design until was nothing that we could improve. For us, the coupé represents the perfect form with a perfect finish.

The heart of the new creation is the iconic 16-cylinder engine – unique in the automotive world and the peak of the engineer’s art. “This is not only an engine but the heart of the vehicle and a technical masterpiece.

There is no other car in the world with such an engine. It is not only extremely powerful but also beautiful to look at,” Stephan Winkelmann enthuses. The 16-cylinder engine with a displacement of

8 litres develops 1,103 kW/1,500 PS and 1,600 Newton-metres of torque. Six tailpipes at the rear bear witness to its incredible power and are also a tribute to the 16 cylinders.

For €11 million (before tax) this unique car has already been sold to a Bugatti enthusiast. It is the

most expensive new car of all time. The car enthusiast is fascinated by the Atlantic; with the “Voiture Noire“, he has acquired a vehicle that takes up the legend and carries the idea forward to the present day. In its exclusiveness, style, quality and performance, “La Voiture Noire” is an unprecedented and unique car that continues a long tradition in the history of the automobile.

THE FERRARI F8 TRIBUTO: A CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE A homage to the most powerful V8 in Ferrari history. Ferrari revealed the F8 Tributo, the new mid-rear-engined sports car that represents the highest expression of the company’s classic two-seater berlinetta. The name is an homage to both the model’s uncompromising layout and to the engine that powers it – with a massive 720 cv and a record specific power output of 185 cv/l, it is the most powerful V8 in Prancing Horse history for a non-special series car and sets the benchmark not just for turbos, but for engines across the board. The 3902 cc V8 won “Best Engine” in the International Engine of the Year awards three years running in 2016, 2017 and

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

As these prestigious awards demonstrate, in the automotive world, Ferrari’s V8 engine is seen as the very epitome of sportiness and driving pleasure. This is particularly the case when it is mid-rear-

mounted in a two-seater. Ferrari has been honing the scope of abilities of this architecture, which

creates an optimal weight balance, to perfection for over four decades. The result is the F8 Tributo, which is one of the fastest, most thrilling and communicative supercars ever.

The new car replaces the 488 GTB, with improvements across the board, providing even better

control on the limit along with greater on-board comfort. The F8 Tributo punches out 50 cv more than the car it replaces, is lighter and benefits from a 10% improvement in aerodynamic efficiency along with the latest version of the Side Slip Angle Control, now in 6.1 guise. So while the F8 Tributo offers the highest levels of performance of any car in the current range, that performance is also very usable.

The F8 Tributo delivers its 720 cv without the slightest hint of turbo lag and produces an evocative

soundtrack. Instantaneous power is matched by exceptional handling thanks to advanced vehicle dynamics solutions. These include a new version of the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE+) which can be activated in the manettino’s RACE position for the first time, a move designed to make

performance on the limit easier to reach and control for an even greater number of drivers. The steering wheel rim is also smaller in diameter to enhance the level of tactility and make the car feel even more agile. In addition, weight reduction measures have cut the car’s dry weight by 40 kg

compared to the 488 GTB, further enhancing both responsiveness and driving pleasure without impinging on interior comfort.

State-of-the-art aerodynamic solutions incorporated into the car’s body help ensure that the

extraordinarily powerful engine can be fully exploited. As with the 488 Pista, the F8 Tributo’s aero

package is directly evolved from the track and it adopts several features from the 488 Pista designed to help manage engine heat, including, for instance, the rearward-angled front radiators and the dynamic engine air intakes positioned either side of the spoiler instead of on the rear flanks.

Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the F8 Tributo is essentially a bridge to a new design language that will continue to emphasise Ferrari’s key characteristics of high performance and extreme aerodynamic efficiency.

Although no official price has been revealed by Ferrari the F8 Tributos looks set to be priced around £200,000 mark.

KOENIGSEGG REVEAL’S SUCCESSOR TO ITS AGERA RS WITH THE NEW 300MPH JESKO Named after Jesko von Koenigsegg, the father of company Founder and CEO, Christian von Koenigsegg and previously codenamed Ragnarok after Norse Mythology this mean supercar is finally a reality and packs a punch.

186 LUXURY LIVING

Powered by a re-designed twin-turbo V8 engine with a new 180-degree flat-

plane crankshaft, new intake, bigger turbos with air injection, and more precise pressure control, the Jesko has a 5.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine that gets 1,280

horsepower on standard gasoline—and 1,600 horsepower when fueled on E85 biofuel. Customers can choose which they prefer to power the car.

It’s new Light Speed Transmission – designed in-house at Koenigsegg – is a 9-speed multi-clutch unit that does away with traditional synch rings and makes changes between ANY gear possible at near light speed.

At the core of every Koenigsegg is its carbon fibre monocoque chassis. Jesko

features a monocoque that is 40mm longer and 22mm taller than its predecessor, allowing for more generous headroom and legroom. Importantly, it still retains every bit of its structural rigidity, measured at 65,000 Nm per degree. This

supremely stiff and strong chassis allows Koenigsegg’s engineers to concentrate on tuning the suspension for performance rather than compensating for suboptimal chassis dynamics.

Koenigsegg’s F1-style elongated wishbones are retained and improved. These

combine with the largest wheel bearings used in a road car today to provide the ultimate in responsiveness and feel. Fully adjustable damping from Öhlins is

tuned using bespoke electrics and controllers designed in-house at Koenigsegg. Showcasing its penchant for track-focused performance and handling, Jesko features the most aggressive aerodynamics package ever designed for a Koenigsegg car.

A double-profile rear wing gives it the necessary downforce needed for a

machine that the company says can break the 300mph barrier, in certain

situations. The front splitter is deeper than that of the Agera and has enlarged, active under-body flaps to enhance or decrease downforce as needed.

The company calls its unconventional doors, which open straight up rather than

on the angle used by butterfly-style doors, “dihedral synchro-helix doors.” A lightweight carbon roof comes off for open-air driving.

Only 125 Jeskos will be built, at a rate of around 40 to 50 a year with prices starting at just under $3m plus local taxes

CHOOSING THE RIGHT

PRIVATE JET SERVICE FOR YOU

Asset based, fractional ownership, monthly memberships or pay as you go charters it seems there isn’t a week that goes by without a new and easier way to fly popping up. But how do you know what’s right for you? The numbers of possibilities are confusing and without the right knowledge, you may find yourself entering a costly arrangement that doesn’t quite suit your needs.

190 LUXURY LIVING

191

LUXURY LIVING POWER u

Here we delve into nuts and bolts to explain the best ones for you...

ASSET BASEd OwnERShIP When it comes to private jets, travellers are spoilt for choice. There are hundreds of models of different private aircraft on the market, in a multitude of sizes to accommodate different flights, and styles. So you can be confident there’s an aircraft to suit your needs. One of the great things about whole aircraft ownership is that you’re entirely in control of the operation. Whether it’s the schedule or take off point, you are free to do as you wish with your private aircraft, which can be very useful if you need to jet-set on a regular basis. Unfortunately, owning a private jet is expensive upfront. Most private aircraft go past the million mark and the more brand-new a model is, the more expensive it gets. So unless you spend several hundred hours a year in the air it probably isn’t worth buying your own plane. If you spend up to 50 hours flying it might make sense to buy a share in an aircraft. Hence companies such as NetJets, the pioneer of fractional ownership. Originally founded in 1964 as a charter and management company, NetJets now sees itself, in the words of NetJets Europe CEO Mario Pacifico, as “a kind of private club,” where “owners are at the centre of everything we do.” There may be occasions when you need something larger with a longer range – for instance, a Dassault Falcon, Bombardier Global 6000 or Gulfstream G550. No problem: your share equates to a certain number of hours of flying time, not necessarily in the plane you’ve bought into, but in any of NetJets’ 700-plus planes. Owners are spared all the hassle of recruiting and employing pilots and cabin crew, negotiating fuel costs or dealing with maintenance and hangar costs, ready with just half a day’s notice. Despite its convenience, fractional ownership still carries its share of difficulties. One downside is that it can be quite expensive if you need to fly out a lot, as you’ll be requiring a more substantial fraction to own and while it lets you enjoy the perks of having a private aircraft at your disposal without the super high overhead costs you’ll still need to shell out a vast amount upfront before being able to continuously use the service.

SUBSCRIPTIOn – PRE PAId OPTIOnS Similar to that of a Metro card the jet card is a pre-paid flight card redeemable against a number of

hours, charged at a fixed rate of flying time. One of the positive points of jet cards is the low capital

outlay compared to full or fractional ownership and the ability to select from a variety of aircraft types, often specifying the actual aircraft model.

Typically starting with a price point of $100,000+ the first such membership scheme was the Marquis Jet Card, acquired by NetJets in 2010, today there are over 35 companies offering pre-paid

programs including Air Partner, Clay Lacy Aviation, Delta Private Jets, Flexjet, Jet Linx Aviation, JetSuite, Magellan Jets, Nicholas Air, Private Jet Services, PrivateFly, Prive Jets, Sentient Jet, Solairus

Aviation, Star Jets International and XOJET each offering varying programs and services which is

great to tailor make to the services you require but be aware jet cards cost per flight hour compared to other options are relatively high.

Another pay up front method is the monthly subscription model think Netflix or Spotify. For a

monthly fee Surf Air offers unlimited flights aboard a Embraer Phenom 300 executive jets, Swissbuilt Pilatus PC-12 NG single-engine turboprops and, on some routes, Cessna Citations. For a mere £1,750.00 per month Surf Air can offer flights from London Luton to a handful of European

destinations including Cannes, Zurich, Geneva and Milan. Many more are expected to launch over the coming months.

Founded in the USA with access to over 17 American destinations including California (Los An-

geles, San Francisco and Santa Barbara) and in Texas (Houston, Dallas, Austin and Midland), Surf Air claims to offers a smarter, better alternative to commercial travel. An ideal private jet option for frequent flyers

u LAST MInUTE dEALS Each month, an estimated 3,000 private jets make more than 40,000 flights with only the pilots

aboard. Either they’re en-route to collect passengers or returning to base having dropped them off. These are known as empty legs, and securing a passage on one has long been the least expensive way of flying private. Indeed, it can save you up to 75 per cent of the cost of a conventional charter.

Many charter houses offer this service which is perfect for one way travel and last minute plans be aware routes are very limited.

On-dEMAnd PRIVATE JET ChARTER The idea of private jet charters might have been around nearly as long as owning private jets, but the chartering operations of old were vastly different to the way we charter today. It was only after the influx of applications and new technologies that chartering a jet became much more accessible, which in turn grew its popularity. For the most part, an on-demand private jet charter works similar to your typical airline: you schedule a flight, walk into a terminal, then take the trip to your destination. But what makes it differ from your standard commercial carrier is that you don’t have to worry about any security pat-downs, long flight lines, or the endless wait for your luggage. Instead, upon scheduling and paying for the flight cost, all you need to do is enter, wait, and board. And most of the time, you get to leave as quickly as possible. Unlike most choices on the market, on-demand private jet charters do not require you to pay any hefty capital cost upfront except the flight booking itself because you’re not acquiring an asset, that said if you’re looking to make various, simultaneous trips, you might need to book different flights from several operators, which can become quite expensive and taxing. 197

DYNamIc New coLLaboRatIoN achIeves New heIGhts! Billions Luxury Portal has plans to give its readers access to a private jet service, in collaboration with Supreme Jets. Tola Bashir, CEO of Supreme Jets (named Best New Luxury CEO 2018 UK), comments: ‘For some time now, the path to selecting the best services at the best prices has been dramatically eased by such platforms as Comparethemarket. com, Confused.com and other comparison sites, allowing customers to quickly and securely find the best deals for their insurance, financial and other needs. These services are aimed at the general public to help make the most common financial decisions. Supreme Jets has now taken this to new heights, offering a comparison service for top end luxury private jet charters.’ ‘Not only will you now be able via your phone app to compare and select the best services at guaranteed costings, but the prices in many cases will come down dramatically, as Supreme Jets has access to so-called ‘empty leg’ flights – the ability to book one way trips on jets that would otherwise return empty from their original outward bound flights. This is good news for the jet providers, creating extra revenue from return flights that would otherwise have no paying passengers, but it is also great news for those looking for elite private jet services at significantly discounted prices.’ ‘Flights that would otherwise have been cancelled create another opportunity to achieve luxury jet seats at short notice and with very attractive pricing. Whether you wish to book a whole plane or a limited number of seats, you now have access to a platform that can do this for you from your phone with just a few pushes of a button. We have brought “uber-like” ease to this elite and formerly complex market, accessing the worldwide jet network, whether you are booking in advance or on a short notice whim, in many cases allowing your jet to be airborne within 3 hours. The speed of our service doesn’t mean you won’t be looked after,’ adds Bashir. ‘Supreme Jets prides itself on ensuring customer satisfaction, building a fast growing network of repeat customers.’ Supreme Jets was founded in 2017, but is already well on the way to becoming a key player in the aviation game. ‘We offer a cloud platform, enabling you to literally rise above the clouds – and, given our present rate of growth, the sky’s the limit!’ 200 LUXURY LIVING

BEHOLD BEGALLTA Italian boat yard CRN and design studio Lobanov have joined forces again to present Begallta, a 75-metre superyacht concept with a dynamic, forward-looking spirit.

The new project has been developed by the CRN Technical Office working closely with architecture

and design studios Lobanov Design, who created the exterior lines and spatial layout, and Pulina DNA, who took care of the interiors.

Begallta is a yacht with original, surprising lines, imbued with a sophisticated, contemporary style that superbly marries the innovative drive of CRN with the futuristic vision of Lobanov Design. The

Begallta’s silhouette captivates the eye with its striking design, exemplified to perfection by the tapered bow, which slices decisively through the water surface when under way. The yacht’s unique stylistic

hallmark is the line that slants along the hull and superstructure like a ribbon, seamlessly uniting her decks and lending an unprecedented sense of fluidity. The Begallta’s futuristic inspiration reaches its zenith at the stern, where the cut of the corners underlines the yacht’s highly distinctive style.

Conceived for a cosmopolitan owner with a strong personality who loves to explore the season extended cruises, Begallta offers an innovative, flowing layout that breaks down all barriers between interior and exterior. The design solutions promote constant contact with the natural surroundings, from the panoramic windows to the generous terraces and glorious sundeck, where the sunlight glints off the facets of the surface in a play of architectural lines that draws the eye to the hard top, as sky meets sea.

The contemporary linear feel outdoors is in perfect harmony with the metropolitan-style interiors. The ample spaces are embellished with prestige materials and a judicious use of glass, set off by minimalist

décor and cutting-edge entertainment features that combine to instantly evoke the typical mood of a New York loft.

CARAT 187 IS IN A CLASS OF ITS OWN AND IT COMES WITH ITS RED CARPET! They say the bigger the carat the better and that is an analogy definitely associated with Carat 187 a dramatic 187 ft superyacht concept created by an international design team. Envisioned by Gareth Davies, European Design Director at Technicon Design, Carat 187 comes packed with an impressive range of amenities, featuring two sweeping staircases, a massive swimming pool, as well as an outdoor dining space, another pool at the prow and plenty of deck space for entertaining. Technicon designed Carat 187 with the aim of breaking the norms in superyacht design blending textures and shapes and offering a unique balance of style and design. Up close, the uniqueness of the exterior truly comes to light. An asymmetrical shell mixes sculptural shapes on one side and softer, simpler surfaces on the other, creating two facets with different personalities: introvert and extrovert the result is atypical and exaggerated yet still ultra-luxurious.

u Gareth Davies, European design director at design company Technicon, spoke about the concept. He stated: “In our work across various domains of transport design, my team and I have developed a real understanding of the needs of a very particular client profile associated to our projects in private aviation, supercar design, and luxury retail. So, it was a very natural progression for us to apply this understanding, along with our core skill set in creative design, to a superyacht project.

ISA YACHTS TO REALIZE HYDRO TEC’S 100M ‘CROSSBOW’ CONCEPT

Last year Hydro Tec (creative naval architects) unveiled its latest concept the “Crossbow” a unique take on a 100 meter superyacht, designed around the idea of a high performance this unique design has now been taken on by Italian builders ISA yachts. Crossbow is a unique concept for a 100-meter superyacht, based on an aluminium hull and superstructure. The sleek design has a beam of just 12.5 metres — more than a metre less compared to the average in this size bracket. What’s more, the draught has been kept to just 3.5 metres to ensure Crossbow can reach cruising grounds that would normally be off-limits for such large yachts. Designed around the idea of high performances and efficiency, this all aluminium vessel is fast and light, with a sleek sporty aesthetic. The exterior deck areas have been designed with speed in mind, keeping the fixed furniture light and well protected from the wind, with the bow transforming at anchor into an expansive entertaining and sun bathing area. The arrow-like design is also reflected in the estimated performance figures, reaching a top speed of 25 knots with a pair of MTU 16V 4000 M93L engines. Accommodation is for up to 16 guests split between eight double cabins, while the lower deck crew area allows for a staff of up to 32 people. M/Y Crossbow has also been designed to remove the reliance of a support vessel for extra toys and tenders, we have integrated an opening heli-hangar on the foredeck as well as 2 x 9.5mt custom tenders and toys in the aft garage located in front of the 135m2 beach club. Her shallow draft of just 3.5 meters is also ideally suited to cruising in areas that many yachts of this size cannot access. For more information visit: www. www.isayachts.com 211

AVIATION

INNOVATIONS There has been a lot written about the advances in the world of aviation, whether this be aerial vehicles, flying taxis, drones or personal jets packs it seems that the advances in fuel and power systems will soon see changes made to the traditional method of flight

Here we take a look at some of these innovative machines

214 LUXURY LIVING

The ehANg 184 The Ehang 184, which has already completed test flights ferrying humans around the skies, is capable of

carrying a single person at up to 128km/h and in Force 7 conditions if necessary. Designed for medium

to short distance trips the Ehang 184 is an all-electric, self-navigating drone with a limited charge of just 25 minutes.

Priced from ÂŁ130,000 - ÂŁ200,000 the drone cockpit also includes air conditioning and in-flight WiFi

LMV 496 If you love weird and wonderful machines then you are going to love the latest machine created by

Ludovic Lazareth and his team, the LMV 496. Dubbed “La Moto Volante” the LMV 496 is a hybrid motorcycle which at the touch of a button can transform into a flying hoverbike.

Looking like something from a Batman movie, on the road, the LMV 496’s power is derived from a

5.2-liter V8 Maserati engine, in the air hydraulic actuators tilt the wheels into horizontal position. The upward thrust to the bike is provided by the 96,000-rpm Jetcat jet turbine in fitted in the hub of each

wheel. The combined vertical thrust provided by the jet turbines equal to some 240 kg (529 lb), which helps the 140 kg (308 lb) motorcycle get airborne. Two extra jets can be added near the middle of the chassis to handle more weight.

The transition from the road mode to the flight mode is done by operating a simple switch on the dashboard and completes in just 60 seconds

LMV 496 joins Jetpack Aviation’s Speeder as the only two jet-powered flying motorcycle concepts

we’ve seen to date. Mind you, the Speeder is much more of a single-purpose vehicle without any road capability, and as such we’d expect its flight dynamics to be superior and less compromised. Only five of these limited edition vehicles have been created with a price of €496,000 (approx. US$560,000).

The pAL-V This new flying machine looks like some-

thing straight out of a Marvel comic book. The PAL-V Liberty is about the size of a

small car and has a retractable rotor blade and two separate engines, one for flight and one for the road.

The Liberty has a three-wheel layout and fold-away rotor blades on the roof. It’s effectively a gyrocopter aircraft with two engines. Its Rotax engine-based dual propulsion drivetrain includes one engine for

driving and one for flying. An unpowered large rotor on top creates lift, while an engine-powered blade at the rear provides thrust.

Its 100hp produces a top road speed of 160km/h, and acceleration of 0-100km/h in nine seconds, but it

has a range of 1,300 kilometres and fuel efficiency of 10.9kpl. In less than 10 minutes you can convert the PAL-V from road to sky mode, where you’ll get 500 kilometres from a full tank and flying at up to 180km/h.

To drive/ fly the machine you will need a flying license, of course, and you can’t just take off and land anywhere; PAL-V says the Liberty requires take-off space of around 90-200x200 metres without obsta-

cles. It says that small airstrips, aerodomes, glider sites and ultralight airfields will be most appropriate. Only 90 units of this machine will be built priced at €499,000.

VOLOcOpTeR Another drone concept recently unveiled at CES is the Volocopter. The two seater 18-rotor electric

Volocopter has the ability to take off and land vertically, hover and fly autonomously in any direction and has also already conducted manned flights. The concept behind the drones design is an “urban air

taxi mass transportation system situated on roofs the company vision is to have a network of rooftops across each city enabling passengers to commute to and from each rooftop like a conveyor belt.

Each Volocopter will be able to offer a flight time of 27 minutes the craft and can reach a top speed

of 100km/h over a range of 17 miles, though Volocopter says the batteries can be quickly swapped to compensate for those numbers until the tech improves.

No prices have been unveiled for this craft as consideration must also be given for each rooftop station

comfort that have become a hallmark of the brand. A large open-plan space is organised into three

zones: the living area features two ample facing sofas and is separated from the raised dining area, which offers a remarkable degree of comfort for a yacht this size. Located on the foredeck are the helm

station integrated with the Naviop-Simrad LOOP systems and the electro-hydraulic steering system, developed in partnership with XENTA. The lower deck features a 4-cabin layout. Amidships is the

full-beam owner’s suite occupying a generous 20 square metres, while the starboard side houses two double cabins with separate beds, which share a bathroom that can also double as a day head. A VIP

cabin with en-suite bathroom and separate shower is located forward. As is the case with the Ferretti Yachts 670, owners can choose between two styles for the interior design, with very different furnishing solutions and colour palettes.

Ferretti Yachts 720 will also be available in the exclusive Tai He Ban version, conceived specifically for

the Asia Pacific market, which includes a service galley below decks and the addition of a dining room with round table on the main deck.

ENGINES The first unit of Ferretti Yachts 720, equipped with twin MAN V12 engines capable of producing 1400 mhp, reaches a top speed of 32 knots with a cruising speed of 28 knots (preliminary data). In its standard configuration, the yacht installs twin MAN V8s with an output of 1200 mhp. The latest creation of the Forlì Shipyard is set to debut in the summer of 2019.

THE GLOBAL

GAME

Polo is a truly international sport, with top-level clubs all over the globe in some of the most stunning resorts and natural surrounds guardians of the sport known as the

“Game of Kings”

230 LUXURY LIVING

Fast-paced and adrenaline-fuelled, polo has been attracting

the world’s elite since its origins which date back to at least the 16th century, where in India it became a popular sport

among royalty under the rule of Babar, founder of the Mughal dynasty.

“LET OTHER PEOPLE PLAY AT OTHER THINGS - THE KING OF GAMES IS STILL THE GAME OF KINGS” a verse, inscribed on a stone tablet beside a polo ground south of the fabled silk route from China to the West at

the ground in Gilgit, Pakistan and sums up the ancient history of what is believed to be the oldest organized sport in the world.

231

LUXURY LIVING SPORT u

Today “The Sport of Kings” is played all over the world and

is no longer restricted to just the summer season. The modern sport today is truly an international one where the professional

circuit can be seen during the spring in Dubai, the summer

season across Europe and Buenos Aires with the winter season moving west to America.

Following a strict chronology the global polo season starts

from May to late July in Britain at one of the most prestigious circuit at Guards Polo Club near Windsor hosted from 21st May – 16 July the Cartier Queen’s Cup was founded back

in 1955 by HRH Prince Charles, the club has since grown

to become the largest in Europe in terms of membership and number of grounds. Set within the outstanding natural

surroundings of Great Windsor Park, the three weeks of 22-

goal polo culminates in a stunning final, historically played in the presence of HM The Queen.

Just 60km from Guards sits Cowdray Park Polo Club, internationally recognised as the ‘Home of British polo.’ Set

within Viscount Cowdray’s 16,500-acre estate in West Sussex, the club was fundamental in the re-establishment of polo in

England following the Second World War. In 1956, The Gold

Cup – Europe’s most important tournament – was established. These spectacular grounds lie in the shadows of the Cowdray

Ruins, previously one of England’s most significant early Tudor houses. Known for its laid back, friendly atmosphere, Cowdray boasts undeniable sporting prestige and a fascinating history

After the Gold Cup, players move on to Europe traditionally, Deauville in France which has a strong polo tradition. In 1920, Baron de Rothschild organised the first game of polo

on the land where, years later, Chantilly Polo Club was built. In 1995, Patrick Guerrand-Hermès had the vision to establish the largest polo club in France in the heart of the Château de Chantilly estate. Just 60km from the centre of Paris, the

club hosts world-class championships in a magical setting

boasting 10 pitches, but the real player on the high goal scene is Sotogrande in Spain. Lured by fabulous weather, state-of-

the-art pitches and, of course, golf, yachts and nightlife, the

summer tournament from July 24th – August 31st hosted at the Santa Maria Polo Club has witnessed enormous growth

over recent years with large numbers of the world’s best players

choosing to spend the month of August there. Today the

tournament level has now been raised to 22 goals, matching

the UK, and the Gold Cup final at the end of August is now seen as the third most important in Europe.

232 LUXURY LIVING

But while Europe has a rich history of polo, Argentina dominates the scene in terms of horsepower

and sporting skill. The Campo Argentino de Polo in Palermo, Buenos Aires, hosts the most prestigious tournament in polo history, the Argentine Open. With a stadium holding up to 30,000

spectators, every polo professional dreams of winning at Palermo - think Football World Cup glory.

The number one ground is known as the ‘Cathedral of Polo’ and it certainly lives up to its reputation. Newcomers to the sport the United Arab Emirates has over the past decade, established itself as

part of the world polo circuit and players flock to take part in the Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series. Dubai’s polo success is marked by the expansion of Al Habtoor Polo Resort and Club, which offers exceptional equestrian facilities, including a state-of-the-art polo club.

Australia is also expanding its international appeal as a key polo destination, Ellerston in New South Wales has an important place in Australian polo history. The property was previously owned by media mogul Kerry Packer and since his death in 2005, polo at Ellerston has been run by the

Packer family. The property boasts some of Australia’s best polo fields and its golf course, designed by Greg Norman and Bob Harrison, is also one of the best in the country.

FEEL THE NEED FOR

SPEED 236 LUXURY LIVING

Hear the roar of engines and screech of tyres with an Elite Sports Packages private jet charter package to some of the world’s greatest motorsports events

Formula One is a competition that needs no

introduction. It is one of the most exciting

motorsports on the planet and the most watched sporting event around the world with more than 530 million people watching it over the course of the season.

Fans of the sport love watching the incredible speeds of the machines, the physics-defying

nimbleness of the drivers and the team strategies

that can make or break a race while other just love to immerse themselves into the glitz and glamour that follows this exclusive sport.

237

LUXURY LIVING SPORT u

PARADISE FOR PETROL HEADS There is no other sport that combines science, speed and celebrity quite like Formula One. In every

Formula One team, you’ll find some of the brightest and talented people covering more than a dozen scientific specialties from quantum mechanics, aerodynamics to engineering then of course there are the drivers, athletes of superhuman strength who should have their own marvel comic! Whilst most of

us just think these highly paid stars drive and sit in their seats there are very few experiences on Earth

where man and machine are subjected to such extremes. Over the course of a race an F1 driver will deal with forces approaching 6.5Gs under braking and up to 4Gs of lateral force under cornering compare

this to the 9G vertical pull a fighter pilot will experience and you soon begin to understand the physical

strength required to drive these powerful machines all while maintaining an average speed of 200mph. The technology on a Formula One car is also another factor. The mystic surrounding the team pits the strange devices and materials used to create these complex pieces of machinery that simply defy the

laws of physics are mind blowing. From aerodynamics to tire wear, everything is optimised for speed. Even the iconic arrow-like shape of the car has been designed to increase downforce.

Besides this, the cars also make use of technology very well. Besides general bells and whistles, the cars also have KERS (Kinetic Energy Regeneration System) which store electrical energy and allows it to

be used as a sort of “boost” during the race for a bump in speed. In addition to this, the cars have DRS (Drag Reduction System) again another huge boost system that allows for more frequent overtakes adding to more spectator fun.

In the world of technology most people would consider the aerospace industry to be the leader in devel-

opment. But actually the aerospace industry has learnt much from Formula One, this is because of the

fast paced nature at which Formula One develops compared to that of aerospace industry. It’s not just

materials technology either, but the aerodynamics as well where Formula One cars are at the forefront of development.

238 LUXURY LIVING

RIVALRIES Everyone loves a good versus evil battle and much is the same in the world of Formula One, think Prost vs Senna, Hill vs Schumacher, Mansell vs Piquet and today Hamilton vs Vettel. And like in any

good piece of literature tragedy can strike at any time either in the shape of a failed mechanical part, degraded tyres, or momentary lapse of attention.

u GLAMOUR A Formula One weekend is not just about the on-track action what goes on off the track is also very important. With the season consisting of 21 races you’d need to be a millionaire to enjoy every race

live however for those with a limited budget there are some circuits that are so iconic and glamorous that they should be experienced just once by F1 fans.

Monaco - 23rd – 26th May The jewel in the crown of the Formula One circuit. There’s no doubt about it, Monaco is the race that the drivers and spectators anticipate the most. Since its inception in 1929, and its inclusion in the in-

augural Formula One World Championship in 1950, the Monaco GP has mixed the excitement and danger of motor racing with European royal patronage and Hollywood glamour.

Drivers love it because it’s the most testing circuit there is and spectators love it because they can get

up closer to the action than almost anywhere else. Plus any visit to Monte Carlo gives you the chance

to rub shoulders with the real jet set whose multi-million superyachts make a bee-line for the marina each May.

Monza - 6th – 8th September The name alone sounds exciting – and the fact that it’s the home grand prix of the country that has given the world Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini gives you an idea of just how passionate the home

crowd are. The combination of famous turns like the Parabolica, the Lesmos and the Curva Grane with straights where the cars can reach speeds of up to 210 mph make for a breath-taking spectacle.

It’s also only a little way north of Italy’s fashion capital Milan where you can shop to designer clothes and climb to the top of the famous Duomo for some of the most stunning views of the city and its surrounding countryside.

Singapore - 20th – 22nd September Monaco might be the epitome of F1 glamour but the night race known as the Singapore Grand Prix might just be the sport’s most visually stunning race. When the sun sets over the city’s futuristic skyline

and the street circuit’s 1600 lighting projectors fire up, it’s the closest F1 gets to Bladerunner – only here the streets are spotlessly clean.

The 25 corners that make up the Singapore GP track and its twisting nature, coupled with the tropical heat make it a tough test of stamina and concentration for the drivers.

While Monza brings the curtain down on the European part of the season in classic style, the Singa-

pore Grand Prix reignites the Asian part with what has become a signature event for Formula 1 in the new millennium.

244 LUXURY LIVING

The Salone del Mobile 2019 international furniture fair in Milan, Italy, witnessed the official unveiling of the new Bugatti home collection.

245

LUXURY LIVING HOME u

Channelling the late Carlo Bugatti’s love for interior design, the collection reflects aspects of the French car manufacturer’s exotic vehicles, yet fuses them with the contemporary stylings of international designers, Carlo Colombo and Toan Nguyen. The collection which includes several pieces including tables, chairs, desks and bedroom furniture is being manufactured by Luxury Living Group, which also produces furniture for other iconic brands including Bentley, Fendi and Ritz Carlton.

The Bugatti Home Cobra Chair “limited edition” reinterprets the original version designed and created in 1902 by Carlo Bugatti in a contemporary key. Limited to 110 pieces in the blue and white version this chair is an exclusive tribute to the 110th anniversary of Bugatti, and features the “110 Ans Bugatti” logo embroidered on the backrest. In collaboration with Etienne Salomé, Deputy Director of Bugatti Design, the design was slimmed down to give it a new stylish dynamism, whilst continuing to respect the original expressive language.

246 LUXURY LIVING

The Cobra Chair, however, is by far not the only item of the Bugatti Home Collection inspired by the French luxury brand. Pieces like the Chiron Armchair, Chiron Dormeuse, Vitesse Chair and Marguerite Coffee Table take direct inspiration from the curves and materials found on Bugatti’s hyper cars.

“Everything in the collection, which bears the signatures of two of the most prestigious international designers, Carlo Colombo and Toan Nguyen, alludes to performance, technology and elegance, essential features of the prestigious Bugatti hyper sports cars”, Raffaella Vignatelli, Chairman of Luxury Living Group explained.

Exclusive leathers, the rare Sodalite gemstone as a reminder of the Bugatti blue, Striato Olimpico marble and extremely soft high-performance technical fabrics enable luxury and technology to be combined. After all, customers of both brands appreciate cutting-edge design and the selection of the finest materials – no matter if they sit in the Bugatti Chiron, or lie in the new Bugatti Home Chiron bed.

The new Bang & Olufsen Beovision Harmony is a TV experience that elevates the design of any living space and fills it with spectacular sound. When Beovision Harmony is turned off or just playing music, the thin screen rests close to the floor, partially covered by two meticulously crafted oak and aluminium fronts, which house the powerful sound centre. When Beovision Harmony is turned on, the two fronts fan out - like a butterfly opening its wings - and the screen rises to the perfect viewing height. Turn off the TV, and the finely choreographed sequence plays out in reverse. The crafted oak and aluminium fronts house sublime technical instruments, delicately tuned by hand and ear to reveal all details of music and sound. The intricate grading pattern is carefully designed to maximize acoustic performance of the three-channel, fully active DSPbased sound centre. Paired with LG’s top-class 77” OLED screen - featuring brighter, selfilluminating pixels and stunning colour - this paragon of home décor and luxury entertainment brings new life to movies, sporting events and must-see shows. 250 LUXURY LIVING

LUXURY LIVING HOME u

Standing on the shoulders of giants The concept behind Beovision Harmony builds on some of Bang & Olufsen’s most cherished products. The Capri series, introduced in 1959, was designed to fully integrate with the living room. Hence the TV was built in teak, which was the preferred wood for furniture at the time. The

1964 Beovision Capri 611 FM SJ TV even integrated both a TV and a radio into a single cabinet, allowing people to hide the electronics completely when not in use.

Home-filling entertainment Beovision Harmony is designed as a centrepiece for home entertainment. Boasting a robust speaker

system with serious sound capabilities, Beovision Harmony offers impressive music streaming with integrated music services like Tune-In and Deezer. You can also stream directly from your smartphone via Apple Airplay 2, Chromecast built-in or Bluetooth. Beovision Harmony also

comes with LG’s most recent webOS 4.5 platform, which allows you to access your favourite media service providers such as Netflix, Amazon and YouTube.

Beovision Harmony also integrates seamlessly with Bang & Olufsen’s growing collection of

multiroom products. For those looking to immerse themselves in first-class surround sound, Beovision Harmony comes with a built-in 7.1 surround sound decoder, making it possible to connect up to eight Beolab speakers such as Beolab 18, Beolab 50 and Beolab 90.

Pricing and availability Beovision Harmony will be available with a combined oak wood/aluminium front or a combined

Grey Melange two-tone fabric/aluminium front and comes with two placement options: floor stand and wall bracket.

Beovision Harmony, including the LG OLED C9 77” TV optimized for Bang & Olufsen, is estimated to retail from 18,500 EUR and will be available in Bang & Olufsen stores starting October 2019.

One of the best courtyard installations of the event came from COS and their collaboration with French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani. Returning to the courtyard and gardens of Palazzo Isimbardi, the 30-meter-long installation was created from 700 interlocking modular bio-bricks, 3D printed in a mix of wood and polylactic acid (PLA). Each bio-brick is printed in the form of interlocking structural lattices, optimizing material use and allowing light to permeate the structure. Arthur Mamou-Mani said he wanted to evoke “a feeling of lightness, porosity‌ something that also feels a little natural, bringing nature inside the courtyard.â€? The bio-brick instillation features three colours, including translucent elements from PLA in its purest form, alongside added white sections and brown hues.

THE MOUNTAIN Just beyond the 50-acre Eagle Crest architectural estate lies the most impressive offering of all: the untrammeled, 640-acre backcountry. Ascending from 5,000 to 9,000 feet, the seemingly limitless

mountainscape, also available for land banking and valued at $8 million, is simply waiting to be

explored—whether that be on foot or behind the wheel of a sleek Polaris RZR. A private 5.5 mile

Wilshire Trail meanders the ins and outs of towering Sequoias and Redwoods, alive with wildlife, waterfalls and far-reaching mountain, valley and city vistas, allowing one to embark upon an

unforgettable adventure no matter the season. Also set within the mountainscape is a plot of land at about 7,700 feet, ideal for a helipad or ADU, as well as two private wells and five springs, all tested and

approved by Arrowhead Water, which the owner will gain full water and mineral rights to. The 845 contiguous acres present an unmatched piece of real estate for one to dwell upon, endlessly explore and forever reap the benefits of a fully self-sustaining lifestyle.

In 2014 a California construction executive was fortunate enough to pick the winning numbers

for a brain-busting $180 million windfall. With no hesitation, he immediately worked a deal on a mountain-top property with a mansion that was already under construction. He enlarged the plans

and finished building it and, at the same time, purchased more land totalling 865 acres, a buffalo farm, a steakhouse serving his grass-fed buffalo steaks and a Wild West saloon. Now that the vast project is complete he is in search for a new project and has listed Eagle Crest Mountain Estate for sale.

u Poised magnificently on the edge of Oak Glen’s untrammeled mountainscape community is the highest individually owned mountaintop compound in Southern California: The Eagle Crest Mountain Estate. Ascending from 5,000 to 9,000 feet on an exclusively-owned parcel of Little San Gorgonio Mountain, the very private and secluded 16,000-square-foot rustic chic chalet boasts a 4100-square foot garage with workshop along with 845 contiguous acres of land that afford its owners a fulfilling lifestyle immersed in luxury amongst Southern California’s most naturally secluded setting. Stunningly well-appointed interiors are framed by far-reaching vistas that span from the surrounding landscape to Mount San Jacinto, the Salton Sea to the east, San Gabriel Mountains to the west and Palomar Mountain to the south, all while setting an entirely new benchmark for mountain living just an hour from Palm Springs and Los Angeles. And while the Eagle Crest Mountain Estate is an abundant offering in and of itself, the ownership opportunity goes far beyond the seemingly boundless 845 acres. With the purchase of Eagle Crest Mountain Estate comes a fully-operating Buffalo Ranch, two barns, caretaker’s home, stocked fishing pond and endless backcountry trails replete with Redwoods, Sequoias and full water rights, tested and approved by Arrowhead Water. Also included in the offering is the four-star rated, full-service Oak Glen Steakhouse & Saloon, sitting on nearly 2.75 fully-landscaped acres in the heart of Oak Glen.

Fashion-Forward Residential Brand Lands in North America’s Newest Luxury Development 277

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

A new name will soon grace the luxury real estate offering in Arizona that is bound to attract affluent

international buyers from around the globe when FENDI Private Residences opens its first groundup residential enclave in North America at The Palmeraie in Scottsdale.

A boutique collection of 41 bespoke FENDI Private Residences will break ground later this year and each home will average 3,500 square feet with private access to an impressive amenity offering.

FENDI Private Residences is an expression of FENDI as a complete lifestyle. The building will be designed and branded by FENDI. The architecture and design will be led by Marco Costanzi, the

architect who has done FENDI Private Suites and FENDI’s headquarters in Rome. These residences will come-to-market later this year with delivery expected in 2020.

“The world’s global leaders in fashion and culinary are taking notice of what we are creating here at

The Palmeraie and Scottsdale’s emergence as a key, important strategic global destination,” said Jerry Ayoub, president and CEO of Five Star Development, the developer of The Palmeraie, a 122-acre, $2 billion luxury development.

The Palmeraie promises to be among the most interesting and desired experiential shopping and dining destinations in North America. The initial phase encompasses approximately 160,000 square

feet of high-end, mixed-use space located on 18 acres at the strategic corner of Scottsdale Road and Indian Bend bordering the posh town of Paradise Valley. The Palmeraie is a magnet for consumers

who are in search of the very best in shopping, hospitality, dining, luxury living, wellness and relaxa-

tion. Set in an open-air environment, The Palmeraie’s architecture and innovative landscaping evokes the senses – all set against the spectacular backdrop of Camelback Mountain and the Southwest’s iconic Sonoran Desert.

278 LUXURY LIVING

“The vision for The Palmeraie is one of elegance and of being fun, with a sense of energy and surprise – and equally as important, the ability to evolve. It facilitates discovery and exploration – a destination that is essentially an activation where the shopping is experiential, not solely transactional,” said Hanna Struever, principal of Retail Portfolio Solutions, who has been hired by Five Star Development to curate both the luxury merchant mix, unique dining venues and special experiences. “Scottsdale has one of the largest primary home markets in the U.S. that is further complemented by year-round international tourism and one of the most significant secondary homeownership markets in the U.S. It is a destination that is being prioritized on the worldwide stage.” An integral component of The Palmeraie’s revolutionary design is the extensive, intricate landscape. With its vibrant colors, diverse textures and architectural shapes, the lush landscaping at The Palmeraie is the yin to the modern architecture’s yang, enhancing the look, feel and sense of place. There will be an unexpected visual interplay of experiences sprinkled throughout the lushly planted “Green Walls”, vine-covered trellises and lavishly planted outdoor spaces such as the focal water gardens. Groves of flowering evergreen trees combined with soaring palm trees create a shaded, idyllic atmosphere. Where luxe meets lush, The Palmeraie forges a new oasis and aesthetic for Scottsdale. 279

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

The project will be designed to create a series of indoor and outdoor spaces and vignettes blurring the lines between architecture, landscape and human interaction with a series of interconnected experiences linked together across the entire district.

For more than three decades, Jerry Ayoub has been one of the industry’s most innovative and suc-

cessful entrepreneurs. Ayoub’s projects range from five-star hospitality and luxury retail, to high-end, multimillion-dollar residential and Class-A industrial projects in Arizona, California and New Mexico. His record of success extends from the early days of his career in the luxury duty-free industry

when he established operations on the U.S. borders with Mexico and Canada. Ayoub independently established and operated a half-dozen successful companies, including a duty-free business, which

grew to become the largest duty-free operation in North America, along with a presence in Europe and Mexico.

DUBAI’S NEWEST LUXURY DEVELOPMENT

XXII CARAT

288 LUXURY LIVING

XXII Carat by Forum Group is the latest luxury development to hit Dubai. The ultra-luxury Mediterranean-style hotel-inspired development promises residents a unique blend of seclusion and sophisticated waterfront living

289

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Located on the Palm Jumeirah’s West Crescent and set against a stunning backdrop of the Arabian

Ocean and spectacular Dubai skyline the private beachfront gated community comprises of 22 sevenbedroom villas ranging from 9,600 to 13,000 square feet.

Featuring a selection of three distinctive types – Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire – the villas offer resi-

dents a hotel-inspired lifestyle with space and seclusion, 24/7 concierge, large gardens and exclusive access to private beaches.

u Embracing a classical design, the development is designed in a style akin to the Renaissance period. The facades are classically Italian, with influence drawn from the Tuscan region. Stucco work in addition to classical columns, pergolas, arched doors and walkways are standard with these villas. It hosts a terracotta finish and hosts a lot of pastel colours, handmade ceramics and wall paintings. The 8 Emerald villas possess phenomenal views from the ground up, along with meticulous gardens. It has views of the Dubai Marina and Dubai Eye. Placed atop a terrace structure, the 8 Ruby villas allow unobstructed views thanks to the elevation. It also hosts private elevators with direct access to the basement garage. Additionally, it has a wide open terrace that further will enhance the views of the sea. The remaining six Sapphire villas have direct private access to the beach and offers picturesque views of the Palm Jumeirah. It hosts the largest plots of all three types of XXII (22) Carat Club Villa.

u

290 LUXURY LIVING

Launched in August 2015, the villas are currently on sale for between AED40m and AED 95m. The villas are furnished with high-end furnishings and fittings imported from France and Italy from brands such as La Cornue, La Cuisine Franรงaise, Devon&Devon and Miele. One of the standout features is the $1 million bathtubs, which have been carved from single pieces of Amazonian crystal by high-end Italian interiors specialists, Baldi. Weighing in at more than 10,000kg each, the raw crystals were shipped from Brazil to Italy, where they were then hand-carved before arriving in Dubai. Another standout feature is the carefully landscaped gardens which have been created to give a natural living environment and a feeling of a true oasis. The private gardens have been brought to life using lush greenery and a combination of exotic and local plants such as Baobab. Palm and Olive trees. A sense of serenity and privacy has also been created through the use of a fencing system with built-in sound barrier panels between each villa, ensuring that both sights and sounds from neighboring villas are entirely eliminated guaranteeing complete privacy.

Entered via a grand stone arch, the cobbled mews, just a stone’s throw from the museums of South Kensington and Hyde Park, offer a sheltered, calm retreat. It’s easy to see why it has attracted long-term residents, with a very low rate of houses changing hands due to its enormous charm. 294 LUXURY LIVING

“The home itself at number 22 offers the perfect blend between classic and contemporary, with the refurbishment works creating a modern living space, whilst retaining the original 19th century charm. The

SUPER Tall &

SUPER skinnY In a bold move blending thoughtful design with urban sensitivity, 111 West 57th Street typifies the luxurious extremes of New York City and the rise in the super skinny skyscraper

302 LUXURY LIVING

Regarded as the skinniest skyscraper in the world 111 West, 57th Street composed on the historic Steinway

Hall between 6th and 7th Avenues has become one of Manhattan’s most intriguing developments.

u Located on a stretch of West 57th Street which has most recently earned the nicknamed Billionaire’s Row, due to the number of luxury high-rises in the vicinity, the tower of 111 West 57th soars to an impressive 1,428 feet into the air, evoking the quality, materiality and proportions of the historic New York City skyscraper, such as the slender and tapering structures of the Empire State and Woolworth buildings, while taking advantage of the latest technology to push the boundaries of engineering and fabrication.

303

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Built on just a 60ft-wide base, the towers base has been constructed in

a courtyard surrounded by the existing Steinway building. The tower on its northern park facing side rises straight up, while the south end

gently slopes back in a series of steps that eventually reduce the northsouth dimension and give rise to a super sleek structure. The tower’s stepped-back, ‘wedding cake’ design interprets the architecture of the past in a subtle modern way.

The unique terra-cotta and elegant bronze filigree that clads the east

and west façades create a sweeping play on shadow and light while

providing incredible texture and richness and while the tower may not be the tallest of the 57th Street giants the position of its footprint offers a nearly perfect symmetrical viewpoint of Central Park, the Upper East Side, and the Upper West Side

Inside the building there are 60 units with 46 of these taken up for apartments most taking up a full floor while seven are duplexes. The most common layout consists of three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms with an average unit size of more than 4,000ft², while the

7,128 sq ft penthouse offers four bedrooms and five and half bathrooms all wrapped up in a $57,000,000 price tag.

Interiors include ceiling heights up to 14 feet, expansive floor-to-ceil-

ing windows, central entrance galleries with sweeping, on-axis views to the north and south, white macauba stone floor at entry, and custom

details throughout including smoke-gray solid oak floors with intricate pattern in the Great Hall and interior doors with bronze door hardware by P.E. Guerin.

The kitchens, designed by Studio Sofield, are handcrafted by Mark Wilkinson for Smallbone of Devizes and available in dark or light

hand-rubbed plaster or chateau gray oak finish. Master bathrooms feature walls and floors finished in veined white onyx and Studio Sofield

designed bronze fixtures cast by P.E. Guerin. Fourteen singular residences will be available in the landmarked Steinway Hall building.

All residents will be able to benefit from a host of amenities including exclusive concierge service, private porte-cochère entrance on

58thStreet, a two-lane 82-foot lap pool with private cabanas, sauna,

steam, and treatment rooms, lounge with expansive outdoor terrace, private dining room, chef ’s catering kitchen, triple-height fitness center, meeting rooms and study.

Sales now being offered by Douglas Elliman with occupancy is anticipated in early 2020.

LUXURY ISLAND EXPERIENCE

IN THE HEART OF MIAMI

308 LUXURY LIVING

Set upon the stunning manmade Venetians islands of Miami Beach sits Di Lido Island a haven for luxury waterfront homes This Miami house set upon a pie shaped lot on the southern tip of Di Lido Island with superb views of the islands, downtown and South Beach. Designed by South African designers SAOTA this designer house spills out onto the longer, waterfront elevation and draws on the jet-set lifestyle of Biscayne Bay, to evoke the experience of being on the deck of a super yacht. Multiple events unfold on this versatile terrace whose defining characteristic - the harmonious merging of internal and external living spaces – is a theme carried throughout the house.

309

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Entrance to the property from the street via the Venetian Causeway, is more restrained; lush planting skirts a generous in-out driveway, and a series of wall planes and volumes, held together by a curved

screen of etched glass, signal a grand, double-volume entrance hall. Once inside, the splayed nature

of the site becomes apparent as masses of programme pull apart to form a dramatic canyon whose volume frames the view out into the bay. This central void is animated with deliberately sculptural elements and artworks - including a bold spiral staircase, and a series of bronze screens which hang

from the ceiling to create a double height dining room, and separate kitchen and family space from the more formal entertainment areas to the East.

u

All the principle living spaces- from the more intimate areas housing a kitchen, butler kitchen and a large family den, to the more open and expansive Great Room and Study- live out onto a semi covered collection of external living rooms verged by the curved arc of the bay-side. Reflecting the lush setting of sea and islands, water, which meanders throughout the house from a pond at the entrance

and via a calm refection pool around the study, unifies this lido-like outdoor space, whilst creating smaller islands of space and linking the inside to the pool and the sea. The covered external living

areas flow onto a spacious deck with a resort-like choice of covered lounging areas, deckchairs for

sunbathing, shallow-water “martini seating, a fully functional bar area and even a pop-up outdoor

table on the water edge for the ultimate on-water dining experience. With two mooring docks the flow between land and sea is seamless and fluid, while meeting all flood line requirements.

310 LUXURY LIVING

311

LUXURY LIVING PROPERTY u

Given the extensive space required in the client’s brief, a balance between scale and intimacy was achieved by composing the programme both between the two fractured wings on either side of the central core and across the upper and lower floors. The upper bedroom level houses the sea-facing master suite complete with hot tub and pool, and three on-the-water suites created for the owner’s three daughters. This upper level hovers between the more substantial masses of the living level and a spectacular pre-oxidised copper roof which, in a deliberate nod to the surrounding early 20th century Italianate vernacular, traces an unmistakable raked silhouette from crisp thin edge to sharp pitch. Set into this element the roof top terrace - accessed by elevator - has a second bar, a fire pit, and a hot tub with breath taking views of Downtown Miami, especially at night. The materials are subtle yet rich in their collective application with an almost yacht-like tautness which allows the home to expertly meet all hurricane code requirements, whilst remaining graceful, open and expansive. Crisp white stucco, warm grey limestone, copper and bronze detail elements combine to suggest understated luxury and textural tension. This domestic palate is offset against cobalt blue pools and lush, vivid green landscapes resulting in a grounded, sophisticated and yet relaxed aesthetic that is both cutting edge and unmistakably at home in its Biscayne Bay setting.

u The project team of this Miami home - assembled by the owner and the owner representative Rick Peña from Prime Group Management - has been a collaboration between high profile experts at the top of their game. SAOTA is responsible for the architectural and interior architecture, working with KKAID as the on-the-ground architect of record and Brodson as the construction company. Brodson is a name synonymous with so many of the high-profile homes in Florida. Lux Populi from Mexico has been brought in as lighting experts while Miami celebrity landscaper Raymond Jungles has created another landscape masterpiece. Lynda Murray is the interior designer who has seamlessly merged the architectural features bringing the palettes and textures into the interior decor.
