BIMA 100
This is the BIMA 100 of 2016
Welcome to the 4th annual celebration of the 100 most influential people in the UK digital industry. It’s a well worn cliché to write “God it was hard to choose our list of winners this year” in the inside cover of a book like this, nevertheless it was. So I’ve dutifully written it.
CON TENT
Lawrence Weber Chair of the BIMA 100, BIMA Managing Partner Innovation, Karmarama
A M O V E O .T V
It was hard partly because the judging panel - which I had the privilege to chair - were ferocious in wanting to reward only the highest achievers and partly it’s because by introducing new categories like Devs and Makers and Client Service Stars, we widened our net to reflect the extraordinarily wide and deep talent pool of the UK digital industry. That widening of our gaze means that we’ve brought together a truly
diverse bunch of people, whom we’re enormously proud to call our BIMA 100. We’re delighted that the BIMA 100 has industry luminaries like Diane Young (The Drum) and Michael Islip (DigitasLBi) rubbing shoulders with some frighteningly talented and – he says JUST the right side of 40 - astonishingly young, new talent like Risha Jindal (Digimeal) and Alex Price (93 Digital). The two hardest categories to judge this year were CEOs & Leaders and Rising Stars, which shows that at both ends of the experience spectrum we are blessed with digital talent. So to those of you who made it a huge congratulations and to those of you who didn’t, please take solace from the fact that the judging panel and the wider BIMA team were humbled at
the number and talents of those who applied. On the subject of BIMA itself I’d also like to pay special mention to those profiled on pages 4 to 7 – the members of the BIMA Executive, all of whom donate their time and talent to BIMA and therefore to the industry as a whole. On this same theme, I’d like to thank the organisations whose generous support has enabled this initiative to flourish: AMOVEO, Breakthrough Funding, Cohaesus, Contagious, Droxic, Heart Internet, Jahia, Kemp Little LLP, Ngoar, Only and Propeller. So again congratulations to all who are profiled in this book. Well done one and all.

to prove behavioural change, along with on-demand access to the world’s leading health experts focusing on nutritional, physical and mental wellness. No longer is there a need to wait for a referral with your validated healthcare expert and coach, they’re now available to you whenever and wherever in the world you are. Not many people know that I…. have an identical twin sister who is also in the digital world, working within digital contract negotiations.
Alex is director of specialist WordPress digital agency 93digital. Alex began designing and building websites for clients aged 15. By 20 he had been forced to leave university at King’s College, University of London after a series of new client wins, a decision he describes as “the hardest I’ve ever had to make”. By 21 he had opened 93digital’s first office in Marylebone and started growing his team. At 23-years old, Alex still independently owns all of
93digital, has never taken investment and bootstrapped 93digital from just himself to a team of eight in just over a year, solely through new client acquisition, whilst reinvesting heavily to build the strongest team of WordPress specialists in London. The next big thing in digital will be… virtual reality. I think this will completely change our relationship with digital forever.
Ally joined Cult following her graduation in 2015 and has progressed rapidly due to her excellent work across key client accounts, ideating and executing global digital strategies. She has become known by her clients and within the agency as a go-to for industry trends and insights. As well as contributing to Culture Club, (Cult’s internal shadow board that continually improves working culture), Ally provides an extension of The
Big Issue Foundation’s digital team through digital strategy and content production, as Cult’s pro-bono account for 2016. Ally goes above and beyond not only for her team and clients, but through multiple extracurricular activities that contribute to the digital industry. My favourite quote is… “Don’t get it right, get it written.” – James Thurber
Just 14% of creative directors in London are female. Count the ECDs you know and you’ll be adding them up on your fingers because there are so few. That means for young women coming into the industry, 88% of them say they have no role models and many leave before they even start. That’s why Ali Hanan founded Creative Equals in May 2015, a hands-on action plan for change.
13
Her aim is to work with industry, organisations, recruiters and agencies to create more pathways to success for female creatives so more make it to critical leadership roles. Creative Equals provides mentorship, training, support, speaker opportunities, judging opportunities and more, working one agency at a time. My one wish would be… That my daughter grows up in world with no glass ceiling or pay divides.

Alison is a digital veteran having started in the days of dial-up Internet, working at COI on M15 and Foreign Office, before moving to the advertising world. Whilst at Tribal DDB, she was Head of Media on Volkswagen’s digital brand strategy as well as launching The National Lottery business on the internet, mobile and interactive TV. She was then Head of Digital Client Services at Beattie McGuinness Bungay before joining Google’s UK Creative Agency Team in 2012 and is now

Alison is married to Jim and has two highly spirited daughters, Livy (10) and Freya (6) and they live in Hertfordshire. My favourite quote is… “Incuriosity is the oddest and most foolish failing there is.” – Stephen Fry
Amanda has led a digital transformation at Macmillan Cancer Support, developing an agenda to embed digital into the organisation’s strategy and culture. She is an inspirational tech leader who promotes best practice and has taken bold decisions such as bringing user experience in-house. Amanda developed social media from being purely a broadcast tool into a key engagement and fundraising tool with over two-thirds of staff now trained and active in using social to achieve their objectives. Her successful
strategy has quadrupled audience reach and engagement and raised millions for Macmillan’s work, whilst retaining brand values at all times. Amanda prioritises time to give back to the digital industry and third sector, sharing expertise, best practise and learnings. I got into digital because… I was the only person who had shopped online when the company I was at had to find someone internally to be their New Media Manager.

@andybudd
Andrew founded Essence in London over 10 years ago and has built the agency into a 550-strong global success story. The latest chapter included being acquired by WPP in November 2015. He is a key exponent of Essence’s core purpose - to make advertising more valuable to the world. In his role as Chief Product Officer, Andrew stewards the agency’s proposition, practices and technology products
in service of that mission and helps clients get the most out of this new breed of agency. Andrew also shares his expertise through speaking engagements and school and college visits, setting challenges and addressing children who are interested in a career in digital. My little known hobby is… hacking homebrew home automation that never works properly.
Andy is one of the founding partners at user experience design consultancy, Clearleft and typography startup Fontdeck. He is also the driving force behind Silverbackapp, a low cost usability testing tool for the Mac. Andy is a regular speaker at international conferences like SXSW. He also runs UX London and design conference dConstruct. In 2011, Andy founded the Brighton Digital Festival, attracting 40,000 visitors and over 170 events.
Andy takes a keen interest in the startup scene, having mentored at SeedCamp for a number of years. In May 2010, Wired Magazine named Andy one of the top 100 most influential people in the UK digital sector. Andy is a qualified PADI dive instructor and retired shark wrangler. The innovation that’s excited me lately is… narrow AI and agentive technology.

Andy founded the Creative Research & Development team at AKQA in 1999 and leads the team today, specialising in the rapid design and development of new digital products and services for clients, and in the demonstration of how new technologies can be applied to solve business and consumer problems. He has led the development of major
pieces of innovation at AKQA around connected cars, dual-screening, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. He was named by Adweek as one the “Top Creative Minds In Digital”.
Annie joined the Greenwood Campbell team in 2014. In eighteen months, she has changed the face of the agency. In 2015, Annie led the company to reposition, rename and rebrand.
Relaxation is… rare. Anything planned just for fun has a tendency to morph into an ambition and become a side-project.
She identified that the business needed to move from a ‘techie’ platform-driven approach to realise its potential in digital consultancy and development. Within twelve months of joining the agency, Annie was promoted to Marketing Director and became the first woman to join the
agency’s board. Annie is also a leading light within the Dorset digital agency scene. She is a voluntary committee member of Meetdraw, the respected networking event for local digital and creative talent, and also serves on the Meetdraw board. Annie is happily married and mum to an energetic twoyear old son. At school I… couldn’t work out what I wanted to become but I knew when I found it, I would work really hard to succeed.
Spanning 23 years – and counting – Benedict’s career has seen him work across many different media and industries, positioning him as one of the hottest UX rising stars in London. Nine years working in New York, Paris and Tel Aviv has given Ben the grounding to handle projects of different types, with a wealth of understanding of users and clients
across the globe. Now Head of UX at Splendid Unlimited, Ben is working with a great team to deliver outstanding experiences for brands such as SSE, eBay, News UK, Boots, Star Alliance, Aston Martin and Barclaycard to name a few. My little-known hobby is… racing motorcycles.
After winning D&AD New Blood, Casey kicked her career off in sunny Ogilvy Dubai. Here she was chosen as one of 14 creatives from global Ogilvy offices to participate in a week-long programme with Paul Smith. She now works with a variety of agencies in London on international brands. Aside from day-to-day work, Casey is passionate about increasing diversity in advertising. She dedicates her time to inspiring women and building their confidence to grow within the industry; through pioneering,

In 2015, along with ECD Emma Perkins, she launched a mentor scheme for young women - Who’s Your Momma - and is currently working on a range of charitable projects to inspire creativity and positive change. Chris is a true innovator and disruptor. He has a gift for guiding a huge digital team towards creating new markets by discovering new categories of customer. He has an amazing grasp on how to harness new technologies but also in developing new business models and exploiting old technologies in new ways. Chris is pushing an established bank to choose between
holding onto an existing market by doing the same thing a bit better, or capturing new markets by embracing new technologies and adopting new business models. My favourite quote is… “We overestimate change in the short term, and underestimate in the long term.” - Bill Gates
Craig cares deeply about encouraging new talent, and the growth of existing talent in the sector. He maintains this commitment through volunteering, pro bono work, and a unique community give-back model. Within his consultancy, Hub And Lab, each client project funds a strategy workshop in a less-privileged school. Hub And Lab team members visit the school and talk about technology, innovation, disruption and the career
opportunities within the industry. Craig continues to work with leaders of some of the biggest businesses in the UK and globally. His project work is all focused on transformation and growth, which sees him contribute towards building London’s reputation for digital excellence. My little-known hobby is… learning to fly. Championing Razorfish Global’s creative output across 35 worldwide offices in the Publicis Groupe, Daniel is responsible for the creative leadership of the agency globally.

Daniel has been named the No.1 Digital Creative Director in the UK by Campaign, invited as a Fellow into the Royal Society of Arts for his contribution to digital advertising and most recently in 2016 he was named ‘Influencer of the Year’ by Creativepool. He has also engaged with the startup sector via TechStars, Startup Weekend, and Hardware Pro. I’m where I am today because… of great mentors and I hope I can be the same for others.
Diane is a highly passionate marketeer, ideas generator and entrepreneur. In September 2015, she joined MassChallenge as global CMO – leading marketing across five markets (three of which just launched in February). Prior to this, she was at Microsoft for six years, where she founded the Microsoft Ventures Accelerator in London in September 2013, graduating 37 startups and building Microsoft’s presence in the startup space. Prior to that, she led
the marketing communications for Windows Phone at Microsoft in the UK for four years. Diane came to the UK in 2000 on the Internet bubble with a startup and has returned to her roots with MassChallenge. I got into digital because... I could see that it was becoming like oxygen.
Diane is co-founder and CEO of The Drum, the leading media company for digital marketing in the UK. As well as a printed magazine, The Drum is Europe’s biggest marketing news platform and by the end of 2015 35% of traffic came from outside the UK, making it the leading marketing news platform internationally. In the last two years, Diane has led the business to double turnover and profit, whilst
enabling the set-up of The Drum New York office and the establishment of an Asia presence. Her ambition for The Drum is to be serving marketers globally, with a presence in the main marketing centres of the world. Not many people know that I… have an honours degree in pure and applied mathematics.
Dino is strange. He’s a weird mix of designer, coder, cartoonist, musician, electronics engineer and mechanic. He bakes cakes too. In the last year he and his crack squad of creative technologists at WCRS have created everything from face-tracking digital posters to a cash machine with Jenson Button inside. Dino’s 22-year digital career has spanned a lot of industries including kids’ TV, Hollywood movies, mobile,
music, CD-ROMS, gaming, advertising and interactive urinal development. No, really. He’s won BAFTAs, BIMAs, Cannes Gold Lions and helped WCRS win Agency of the Year at the 2015 Masters of Marketing Awards. With Dino’s passion to lead the wider advertising industry into an ever-more digitally infused future, as WCRS once coined... the future’s bright! At school I… hated school.

Dominic, who transitioned from being a professional drummer to become the founder of this pioneering technology company, won Young Entrepreneur 2013 and the Great British Entrepreneur awards. Relaxation is… clearing my inbox every day! One of the highlights of my day is always being on top of the work load.
Over the years, Dug has built up a long list of quiet revolutions. These always start with a game-changing insight and uncovering those insights where others miss them is a big part of his mojo. As part of a team, Dug’s thinking has enabled many digital firsts, from the first online sandwich bar to the first user-generated currency platform (Vodafone Exchange), from the first reality-bending game platform (Bondworld, MGM) to the first “API

Recent revolutions include bringing lean UX prototyping to Nationwide’s proposition leadership, and being invited to train British Computer Society members in cognitive psychology and great customer experience. Emma oversees toinfinity’s entire client portfolio. Executing new opportunities, she has successfully upsold client retainers by an additional 25% just in 2015. By evaluating client personality traits, Emma is able to tailor specific communication strategies, promoting positive overall relationships. Her commercial outlook has singlehandedly attracted new clients to join the company portfolio and seen
her invited to present to their boards and investors. Most recently, Emma has successfully implemented a digital strategy that has increased a key client’s domain authority 3 points above their largest and most established competitor. My favourite saying is… o’hana means family, family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten.
Emma is ECD of MullenLowe Open, the behaviour-driven activation & CRM network within MullenLowe Group. She has been tasked with building the creative reputation of the agency since joining a year ago. Creative accolades include Agency of the Year at the MAAs and award recognition at Cannes and D&AD. Emma also judged D&AD 2015 on the Direct panel. Emma is passionate about making the creative industry more diverse and is working on three projects to promote the advancement
of diverse talent: She runs a female mentoring programme for ‘She Says’ called Who’s Your Momma; is a founder of ‘Token Man’, an initiative to give men a better understanding of the challenges women face in our industry, and she acted as a Mentor to the winning team of the Great British Diversity Experiment. The next big thing in digital will be… tech to tackle inequality. It’s no longer about making tech cool, but using it to make our lives and relationships better.

Mando was 18 years old in 2015, and the year closed with Ian winning ‘Agency Leader of the Year’ at the Drum Network Awards following Mando delivering its most successful financial performance to date. This achievement came within three years of Ian leading a buyout of existing shareholders and spearheading wholesale changes across the agency’s market proposition, service offering, partnerships and operational systems.
The change is completed with an opening of a new London office and an imminent rebrand of the agency. In addition, Ian has taken up a regional specialist role for BIMA and started BIMA Liverpool. With particular focus on Director-level relationships it is the fastest growing regional membership in the country. Not many people know that I… was in a signed rock band touring a 10/10 rated album.

A founding partner of Studio Output with limitless belief in the word ‘yes’, Ian has dedicated the past decade to showing Studio Output’s clients the future. He is now Group MD of Output Group, which includes Studio Output, Found and Allez! Studio.
Championing the importance of the creative industries to the UK economy, Ian’s mission is to bring good design into the mainstream consciousness. In 2013 he sat on the UK Government’s ‘Richard’s Review’ of apprenticeships.
In 2007, Ian set up Glug, a networking and talks event for the creative industry. Now in its seventh year, Glug attracts crowds of more than 900 in London, and has run in sixteen cities across eight countries.

As Creative Director at TH_NK, Phil’s work has a consultative foundation, creatively steering, shaping and delivering ambitious transformations for businesses in change, including Vue and Butlins. Recently, he also created the innovative brand identity for Atom: the UK’s first mobile-only bank. His continued involvement with the project means overseeing the design and development of the app which employs the smart use of facial and voice recognition technology to

build a truly innovative bank. His role sits at the hub of user experience, tech and strategy to fuse a creative seam into every element of the project. Phil’s 18-year career has earned him recognition at D&AD and BAFTA while his work for Yell.com was named one of Campaign’s Top 10 campaigns of the decade. Richard is a technical leader with 17 years of experience at early stage startups and digital agencies. He currently leads platform development at We Are Colony, the ‘Netflix rival which puts fans first’, which recently came out of beta and has users in 115 countries.
I’m where I am today because... of a passion for the art of coding and support from an amazing group of friends and family.
At Richard’s previous startup he built a radical search and retrieval tool which he helped sell to a number of ‘Big Pharma’ companies in Europe
and the U.S. In between, he worked at leading digital agency Zone, where he built applications for the likes of Coca-Cola and the BBC, and where his work for an online fashion brand was recognised by a Marketing Society Award for Excellence. Richard’s passion for all things digital, his rapid career progression and achievements to date, mark him as a rising star in the industry. Not many people know that I… read, write and speak Greek!
Rick trained as a chemical process engineer (as a student he wrote software for monitoring oil rigs), yet now he works with leading UK brands and creatives to imagine and build magical creative technology. Highlights include being the brains behind multiaward winning Monty’’s Magical Toy Machine for John Lewis, getting snow

With 10+ years’ experience in digital design, content and advertising for some of the world’s biggest brands including Harper’s Bazaar, Topshop, Ted Baker and the BBC; in 2014 Ringo shifted the emphasis of his work to the charity sector. Since then he’s embraced the not-forprofit field; forging partnerships that resulted in a sector-leading digital report. He is a frequent keynote speaker and writes regularly for national publications.
Having helped to achieve record turnover for Positive in 2015, Ringo led the team to be selected by Royal National Lifeboat Institute as strategic partner; delivering the charity’s ambitious programme of digital transformation over the next three years and marking the start of a very bright 2016 for the agency. Robert is a child of the early internet, having started his career in technology as a solution architect and cut his teeth on the high profile site launches of Virgin.com, Virgin Galactic and the BRIT Awards first online voting system. Soon the call of the dark side was too strong and he successfully made the transition to a senior commercial role setting up some of the first virtualised hosting platforms for digital agencies
such as Gyro, Amaze and Graphico DMG. Since founding Wirehive back in 2011 he’s had plenty of opportunity to use his unique blend of technical knowledge and commercial experience to deliver large scale hosting platforms for the likes of i100, Centrica and Soho House. My favourite saying is… culture eats strategy for breakfast.
Robin oversees all technical developments, engineering and backend scaling at daily fantasy sports phenomenon FanDuel. Massive growth over the past few years has seen the company’s registered users increase to over 6 million. Robin spearheaded the scaling of FanDuel’s system architecture to accommodate hundreds of thousands of concurrent users across web and mobile, processing transactions at rates that would be equivalent
to selling out Wembley Stadium in minutes. His technical expertise and management were key to FanDuel enjoying its busiest ever season during NFL 2015. Prior to joining FanDuel, Robin headed up the engineering teams at Play.com and Chemist Direct. A technical wizard from a young age, he had his first computer program published at the age of nine. My little-known hobby is… writing music.
Rosa is totally inspiring. She is a young Ruby developer who has recently joined the GDS team. She organises weekly community events which encourage diversity in the tech industry. She is an excellent and very accessible role model, mentoring minorities who want to join
the tech community. She is a STEM ambassador and accomplished public speaker. The innovation that’s excited me lately is… Sonic Pi, a live coding environment used to teach coding skills through the medium of music.

can be heard, not just herself. She has now set up a group for kickass women in VR in the UK called VR Girls UK. In 2016 she was nominated for a Venus Award and is now a finalist for the ‘New Business’ award. At school I… wanted to be that person in high heels & great suits with an office. Now I’m the person who wears trainers and works around the world. Equally as effective.
A member of the BIMA 100 in 2015, Sarah is well known and widely regarded in the digital world. She now runs her own strategic consultancy following several high profile clientside roles and remains active in the sector, with regular judging, speaking and advisory positions. Sarah has extensive experience in the charity and commercial sectors, having driven digital transformation programmes at Oxfam and now the MS Society, as well as being on the Board at a fintech startup. Having risen to Director level herself, Sarah is a passionate advocate
for women in the digital and tech industries, co-founding NINE for this purpose in 2014. She also runs a network for women in Oxford and mentors on a number of industry programmes to support others across the sector. The innovation that’s excited me lately is… smart fabric. I think there’s real potential to transform both performance and health care monitoring.
Sarah (25) and Tash (28) create socially/digitally-led campaigns at VCCP Kin for O2, easyJet, ASDA, MORE TH>N, Coors Light and Macmillan. Their first project together, O2 Possessed, won Best Experiential Innovation at the 2015 Drum Dream Awards and placed at the Brand Republic Digital Awards, Shorty Awards, Drum Content Awards and Shots Awards. They were shortlisted in the 2015 Cannes Young Lions Cyber competition.
Tash, a Londoner, started in planning, with previous stints at Jam (DF London) and WPP. Sarah, a Californian, stumbled into advertising after working in TV and scientific research (amusingly including a Masters in the Internet from the University of Oxford). They cover VCCP’s Innovation sessions and sometimes give talks about acing social advertising. Our great idea is… something that involves baked goods, haptic tech and pyrotechnics. Enquire at your own risk.
Sometimes the best creative isn’t the stuff you do in agencies. With her friend, Scarlett launched Crack+Cider, a store concept where you buy clothes and items for the homeless in December at a pop-up in Shoreditch and it went ballistic! She is also a lead at the Young Creative Council where
