ARCH ITECTURE MASTER THES IS . VE NUS BU ILDING Spatial and architectural interpretation in the Venus building, La Mina Neighborhood

Portfolio, Omar Niño Guzmán

After reviewing in-depth of the historical development of the La Mina neighborhood and understand all the urban interventions that have been carried out since its origins. It is clearer to understand that all those problems within La Mina are not simply attributed to a problem “Social” that can be solved with urban renovations or the execution of renovation plans. It is clear to understand that these renovations have attributed a series of urban values and of public space with much more “clean” and the relationship with the Barcelona urban growing, otherwise it can not be forgotten in the same way that it has assigned a character of urban isolation. This inhabitant, closer area, and city relationship cannot simply resolve with an additional urban renewal or temporary social plans. It is of extreme importance to recognize the direct relationship with all that speculation about the housing and La Mina plots prices have generated an abandonment of dwellings and of the properties which are available. As follows, it can be understood that this relationship with the high prices of the houses and the impossibility on part of the inhabitants of acquiring new houses has produced in La Mina a land out an owner, abandoned floors, housing occupied or just waiting to be assigned to a new family.

During the last ten year in Europe and in a special way towards Spain, the migrations from African countries and Asia have represented a social condition in terms of housing, health, education, etc. The local governments have had to deal with this global issue in different approaches. The global migrations in term of mobility in Europe represent a serious matter to consider along the next generations. Nowadays the migrants are fleeing from their land trying to achieve a better life condition. Unfortunately, the migration is associated with a social gap around the world. People around the world is turning into refugees as a result of global migration. This architectural project is a proposal for the Barcelona government which is a breath for the growing number of refugees in Barcelona. The fundamental program for the Spanish government in the relation to this condition is the creation of several refugees social centers which have like an aim the social redintegration for those that been taken a place in Spain and with emergency need attention in different aspects such as, temporal housing, first aids, learn a new language and costumes.

The economic crisis in Europe and especially in Sapin brought to the cities the abandonment of many places as such housing, factories, and warehouses. Some of them have been taken for the banks, squat groups or simply are not being used. Considering the rise of areas and buildings without activities in Santander, Cantabria the intervention aims to active one area surrounded by a warehouse with social activities and especially the connection with the civic center. This region is particularly industrial but the relation with tourism is one element fo the proposal.

Clearly, one condition for the urban renewal can contemplate the elimination of old buildings and the construction of new ones or the remodeling and restoration of existing buildings. For this project the locality of low houses and the high number of factories, there is a notorious housing deficit due to the increase in population. To alleviate this problem, the idea is to develop an urban renewal and begin to build large structure thus that people have access to different facilities. The creation of green spaces can also be part of urban renewal. In a neighborhood in which dozens of warehouses have been built in the last decades, it is possible that square- center, and parks need to improve the quality of the environment and to offer neighbors multifunctional spaces. Where the oldest and least prepared neighborhoods are located to face the social and economic demands of the times. It is important to note that the budget required for such an action is considerable and that the investment is not always recovered.

Habitat for vulnerable communities / Colombia

It is important to project define which are the most relevant states approach. There are two different premises, firstly: Water resource within the culture of Orinoquía region. Secondly the rural development through the land restitution and a dingus housing. These ideas correspond at point view of the development plan in Colombia which is encouraging the returns for displaced people who have lost their land by cause of armed conflict. The main focus is an integral productive project capable of improving some factors related to environment, social, cultural and politics.Orinoquía region is considered in perspective like a Colombia food pantry of the future, its geographic is featured by long plains and many water ecosystems; Natural wetlands, morichal, rivers. That becomes the region in a natural reserve. Orinoquía natural region in Colombia is related to closely with the water, the meaning of water bodies within of local economy – cultural is a fundamental piece of development..

Considering a series of elements given from the urban analysis; an x-ray can be constructed that diagnoses the problems that are evident within the sector and in particular the La Favorita neighborhood, significant elements with which the general approach of the proposal acquires a value through the recovery and connection of public space within the town of the Martyrs. Within the locality there is a large number of public spaces with a recreational / cultural nature, one of the conditions to which these social areas are subject would correspond to the disconnection and polarization, referring to these two concepts it is necessary to talk about the deterioration of city and society in which the town is located.

For this research project, we have collaborated with the representation workshop in Architecture of the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University (Colombia) with the aim of giving students different possibilities in the process of representation in architecture, from the initial sketches to the development of digital models. As a topic of work was selected a context away from the architecture which had the possibility of assigning new ideas and actions to the students, the architecture inside a boat and the capacity of using this space for theater or show activities was the excuse to produce all the material related to architecture.

appreciate the architecture left by the Colony with the possibility of extreme sports offered by its caves and rivers. The design and construction of contemporary housing require a new look due to social, economic, technological and environmental changes. Housing, today, must consider several factors that were previously not contemplated, such as working from home, demographic changes that affected the size of homes and their different ways of using space.
