Birth Roots Resource Guide The Belly to Baby Resource Guide represents a wide range of diverse local resources available to you as you prepare for and experience the transformation of pregnancy, birth, and early parenting. Inclusion in the Belly to Baby Guide does not imply a Birth Roots endorsement. Birth Roots exists as a nonprofit community organization ensuring that families are independently informed of the entire spectrum of options, approaches, philosophies, and models of care. Birth Roots recognizes the value and importance of access to diverse approaches, not all of which will be a good fit for every family or circumstance. We believe that this inclusive approach is essential to a thriving community.

Birth Roots Birth Roots is an Prenatal and Early Parenting Resource Center, based out of Portland, serving families all over Southern Maine.
Our Community
Families who get involved in Birth Roots activities are curious and motivated to find out what they don’t already know. They are interested in meeting other new families and benefiting from new ideas and diverse ways of thinking about birth and early parenting. Birth Roots classes & groups are successful at building a vibrant community of families because of the belief that “one size does not fit all”, rather an emphasis on nurturing individual instincts and intuition in responding to our unique circumstances.
Our Philosophy
The work of Birth Roots is rooted in the philosophy that the way people are treated at birth (as a mother, as a newborn child and as a family unit) has lasting effects far beyond that one day. Parents who feel respected and self-determined throughout pregnancy and birth tend to view themselves as equipped to provide nurturing care as a parent. Children born in an environment of confidence, awareness and intimacy tend to be more resilient and able to thrive.
Our Mission
The Birth Roots model is non-clinical, community based education and support throughout pregnancy and the first year of parenting. Our programs and events build community, encourage instincts and intuition, address social, emotional and non-clinical needs and promote our philosophy of “Community Supported Parenting”. Birth Roots is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization devoted to removing obstacles to perinatal health by offering continuous support through pregnancy and postpartum in a community setting.
Founding Directors Leah Deragon, CCE, Doula since 1999
Leah’s Birthing From Within and Blossoming Newborns classes have transformed the experience of an entire generation of new families in Southern Maine. She and Emily Murray co-founded Birth Roots Perinatal Resource Center in 2004 and are currently in the process of co-creating the “Community Supported Parenting” model of Parental Development group work. Leah’s gifted facilitation brings the Birth Roots’ mission to life by creating a class environment that fosters connection, dialogue and meaningful reflection.
Leah
Emily Murray, CD, HBCE
Emily became a doula and childbirth educator after attending the birth of her niece in 1997. She was forever changed by witnessing her sister’s transformation through pregnancy, birth and parenting. She started Birth Roots as a means of ensuring that families feel confident and connected throughout pregnancy and early parenting so parenting is an intentional practice grown from a place of awareness and conscious choice. Acupuncture Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that is now being used widely even within the western medical world. Acupuncture can be used broadly to sustain or improve health during pregnancy and pastpartum or for more specific circumstances such as encouraging labor to begin, turning a breech baby, lowering blood pressure, low milk supply, colic, postnatal healing, postpartum depression, etc. Beyond pregnancy and birth, women and men planning to conceive or undergoing fertility therapy with western medicine can use acupuncture to enhance their body’s preparedness for welcoming a baby.

Birth Places Women experiencing a healthy, low-risk pregnancy have a wide range of options of where to birth. You and your provider will make judgments about whether or not you or your baby fall into the category of low-risk, high-risk or somewhere in between. Most birth places offer tours so you can get a sense of their routines and amenities. A few questions to ask; 1. How do I feel when I walk into the birth space, comfortable, nervous, scared, at ease? Do I feel any different the second time I see the space? Is there anything I can do to make the space feel more calming and familiar? 2. What would happen if my birth didn’t go as planned or if I or my baby needed a little help or significant help during labor, birth or postpartum? 3. Does this birth place offer the things that I envision being helpful to me during my birth experience? If so are they routine or special requests? 4. Does my insurance cover this birth place? If not, what are payment options?

Things a newborn expects‌Touch and connection. Some parents
find that they fall in love with their baby over time and for others its love at first sight. Gentle massage, talking to your baby (they can’t answer but they can understand), bathing with your baby, singing and skin to skin contact are all ways to cultivate love hormones in yourself and your baby.

w? did you kno While many Birth Roots families are interested in a "natural birth" and plan to breastfeed, these are by no means prerequisites or requirements. While our tendency is toward supporting connection, instincts and intuition (aka "oxytocin parenting"), our programs focus on helping you make sense of your experience so you can figure out what is right for your family. We do not prescribe a specific style or method of birthing or parenting. 27
Chiropractors A mother’s spine and pelvis undergo many changes and adaptations to compensate for a growing baby. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy works by enhancing nervous system function and alignment to encourage greater health for both the mother and baby. Chiropractic has special techniques that can help to turn a breech or malpositioned baby and can help with common pediatric complaints such as colic and ear infections and general immune support.

w? did you kno Ways to care for a new family 1. Keep your visit brief: Unless you are there to help around the house, cook or care for older siblings, visits should be less than 15 minutes. Interruptions solely for the sake of visiting can interfere with a new mom’s ability to tune into her newborns feeding cues, reduce hormones needed for milk production and her ability to sleep when the baby sleeps. 2. Feed them: Bring food that can be frozen in double servings, make them a snack while you’re there and ask if they need anything picked up on your way. 3. Be helpful: Do the dishes and the laundry and give their pet lots of attention when you visit. 4. Ideas, yes. Unsolicited advice, no: What worked for you may not work for them. Offer

4. Ideas, yes. Unsolicited advice, no: What worked for you may not work for them. Offer ideas when asked but allow them to figure out what works for their unique baby and family. 5. Keep your germs to yourself: Wash your hands thoroughly, avoid wearing scented products, and don’t hog the baby – a baby’s place is in their mom or dad’s arms... unless you are asked to hold the baby so they can sleep or eat.

Childbirth & Parenting Education Many of us do not have the benefit of seeing or participating in labor and birth until it is our turn. In generations past, seeing a mother, sister or aunt give birth then helping to care for her in postpartum gave women a template for what to expect from the birth and the postpartum experience. Fathers, being relatively new to the support team have even less exposure to birth before they become a parent. We now rely more than ever on quality classes to bring us to- gether with other families to create a sense of community and to inspire us to participate more fully in the decisions about our care during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

w? did you kno Key Concept at Birth Roots The Fourth Trimester: “…human babies need the first three months of life to give their brain and central nervous system the time needed to mature. In the course of those three months, an infant develops into a baby who is able to respond to the outside world. Breathing starts to regulate. She becomes able to lift her head, smile, coo, develop social interactions, and begin to soothe herself. This time between birth and the end of a baby's third month is a unique stage of life that many now refer to as the "fourth trimester."

w? did you kno Key Concept at Birth Roots Oxytocin: “Giving birth is an act of love, and each birth is unique to the mother and her baby. Yet we also share the same womanly physiology and the same exquisite orchestration of our birthing hormones. Our capacity for ecstasy in birth is also both unique and universal, a necessary blessing that is hard-wired into our bodies but that requires, especially in these times, that we each trust, honor, and protect the act of giving birth according to our own instincts and needs.” The Hormonal Blueprint of Labor by Sarah Buckley

Postpartum Depression… know the signs and get help early!
Baby blues Signs and symptoms of the baby blues - which last only a few days or weeks - may include: • Mood swings • Anxiety • Sadness • Irritability • Crying • Decreased concentration • Trouble sleeping
Postpartum depression Postpartum depression may appear to be the baby blues at first — but the signs and symptoms are more intense and longer lasting, eventually interfering with your ability to care for your baby and handle other daily tasks. Signs and symptoms of postpartum depression may include: • Loss of appetite • Insomnia • Intense irritability and anger • Overwhelming fatigue • Loss of interest in sex • Lack of joy in life • Feelings of shame, guilt or inadequacy • Severe mood swings • Difficulty bonding with the baby • Withdrawal from family and friends • Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby ~www.webmd.com
What you can do • Call your doctor or midwife and/or a mental health professional • Get out for walks, visits with friends or to groups like Blossoming Newborns, Social Butterflies or other support groups listed in the Postnatal Support section of the guide. • Get extra help around the house; friends, family or a postpartum doula • Eat well, consider Omega 3 and vitamin supplementation and any medications suggested by your care provider. Prescription medications aren’t always needed for mild depression but when they are, most are completely safe to take while nursing and are taken for a relatively short period of time to help you get back to a stable place where you can take over again. • Find a mental health provider or at least friend you can talk to who will check up on you regularly • Sleep is far more important than household chores or errands. Take naps when you can. Consider using ear plugs and an eye mask to help.

Doula | Labor & Birth The foundation of doula support is emotional, physical and informational support for a woman and her family before, during and just after childbirth. That is the book definition, but a doula’s work encompasses much more. The process of labor and birth is a complex collaboration of mind and body. A doula’s job is to know how to influence the environment in which a family is birthing in order to facilitate the most comfortable, fulfilling and uncomplicated birth possible while helping a family to express their unique needs and preferences. The following is one way a family might find and hire a doula: 1. Find a few names and contacts from the list below. 2. Call or email 3 or more doulas with your basic information to see if they are available for your due date and work where you are birthing. 3. Select a couple of doulas and make an appointment to meet face to face to see how you connect . 4. Select the doula that you and your birth partner are comfortable with if you liked more than one, sometimes your second choice can be your backup doula if the two doulas have a working relationship. 5. Meet with your doula 2 or more times until you are both confident that there is an understanding of your preferences and expectations. Meet doulas and special guest speakers at a free Doula Tea at Birth Roots hosted by Rebecca Goodwin of Birth Alliance once a month. Call 318-8272 to register.

Doula | Postnatal Care Each family has unique needs during the transition from pregnancy to parenting. Most doulas work with families in the first 3 months, but are available throughout the first year. Emotional support, tidying up the house, doing laundry, caring for a pet or for older children, and fixing meals are just a few examples of things a new family will need help with. Getting the help you need can mean the difference between surviving and thriving as a new family.

Maternity & Prenatal Care Providers Most of the providers listed here offer well woman care throughout your reproductive life. When choosing who will care for you throughout your pregnancy and birth, it might be helpful to know that all of the providers listed here offer a similar, basic sched- ule of prenatal visits and tests for women experiencing a normal pregnancy. The differ- ences are in where they attend births, specific skills, experience, special training, philoso- phies, prenatal visit routines, and birth routines. Schedule a visit or a phone conversa- tion so you can get to know a few providers before you make your final decision. Some questions you might consider; 1. Does this person’s routine practices, personality and philosophy fit with my preferences for birth and put me at ease about how I would be cared for? 2. What is the likelihood that this person will be the one at my birth and am I comfortable with the back-up provider(s)/partners? 3. What is their schedule of prenatal visits and recommended tests? 4. How long do visits last and what is the normal routine for a prenatal visit? 5. Are there any special skills or knowledge this person has that I want or need that set them apart from other providers? Following is a brief description of the certifications and specialties you might see as you make your decisions about who will care for you and your baby. The experience, philosophy and experience of providers will provide. Homebirth Midwives CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives)

Osteopathic Physicans Osteopathic Medicine is based upon a science of healing which acknowledges that human beings possess an innate capacity for self healing. If the Osteopath (DO) can remove the obstructions in the system, nature “will kindly do the rest”. DO’s are fully licensed physicians, who practice all branches of medicine and surgery. Osteopathic training includes the same basic medical school curriculum as MD schools, with an additional 500 hours of training in manual diagnosis and treatment. Cranial Osteopathy is a type of Osteopathic treatment that offers the physician a deeper understanding of, and ability to communicate with, the human being’s living physiology, as well as a broader range of therapeutic options. This approach offers a gentle, safe and effective way to address the full spectrum of healthcare issues that affect pregnant women, newborns, and infants. Even the “normal” processes of labor and delivery are stressful events for mothers and children. The Osteopath provides prenatal care for the expectant mother to address issues that include morning sickness, swelling of hands and feet, sinus congestion, back pain, and preparation of the pelvis to ease labor and delivery. Osteopaths also treat newborn for a wide range of issues including colic, poor suck/latching, irritability, sleeplessness, ear infections, and structural strains.
