ABOUT BIRTH ROOTS OUR MISSION
Through our Community Supported Parenting© programs and events, Birth Roots provides non-clinical, communitybased education and support throughout pregnancy and early parenthood.
OUR COMMUNITY
Families involved in Birth Roots are often interested in meeting other new families and benefiting from diverse ideas and other ways of thinking about birth and early parenting. Our classes and groups facilitate the development of a vibrant community of families that embrace the belief that “one size does not fit all.” Instead we nurture individual approaches and encourage sharing of each others’ diverse experiences.
OUR PHILOSOPHY
The work of Birth Roots is rooted in the philosophy that the way mothers, fathers, infants, and new families are cared for at the time surrounding birth has effects that last far beyond that one day. Parents who feel respected and self-determined throughout pregnancy and birth tend to feel more confident in their ability to nurture their new child. Children born in an environment of confidence and awareness are more likely to thrive and be resilient.
AT BIRTH ROOTS... We balance authenticity with inclusivity. We value introspection-based development over prescriptive methods. We encourage continued alumni engagement and involvement in the promotion of our vision and mission.

Welcome to Birth Roots Birth Roots is a Portland-based nonprofit devoted to transforming the way new families are supported during particularly vulnerable phases of early parenthood. Since 2004 Birth Roots has been developing and delivering a unique model of community-based education and support that begins in pregnancy and continues throughout early parenting. The work of Birth Roots addresses social, emotional and non-clinical needs, emphasizes parental instincts and intuition, establishes cohorts and networks of peer support, and sets a tone for Community Supported Parenting. We are committed to creating more meaningful conversations around birthing and parenting. Birth is transformative no matter how it happens, but with an enriching community you don’t have to reinvent the wheel or go it alone. Rather than relying on the internet for parenting advice, you have a local resource that can fill your practical needs as well as offer a space for you to connect process, grow and thrive. You’ve just stumbled upon a hidden treasure in Southern Maine. Amidst Greater Portland’s thriving Farmer’s Markets, extensive trail system, public spaces, and “Buy Local” movement, Birth Roots is an integral part of why Portland is consistently listed as one of the best places to live and raise a family in America.

A little history... Birth Roots Birth Roots was born in 2004 out of the birth center known as the Ballard House. Co-founders Leah & Emily were charged with organizing and designing the childbirth education classes, postnatal groups and assuming leadership for the community support space. Their mission was to offer more families access to a non-clinical, doula-inspired approach to their care during pregnancy and early parenting. The early emphasized the message that families should not be told where they were going in childbearing, but asked where they wanted to go and how they wanted to get there. Birth Roots—An example of Community Supported Parenting© In the beginning, Birth Roots brought in guest-speakers to inform families of all different paths to birthing and raising families, but we soon found that what people really wanted was to talk to each other. It wasn’t necessarily social time that they craved, but facilitated conversation. We discovered that facilitated discussion brought about deep sharing and allowed bonds to form that overcame time, diversity and distance. So instead of raising money for an individual woman to have a doula attend her birth, we became more of an “organizational doula.” As a result of 10 years of observing the needs of families and refining the way we support them, Leah and Emily have created the concept of Community Supported Parenting©. Securing the Bridge for the next 10 years Birth Roots builds a bridge from pregnancy to parenthood. For a growing number of families, the quality of support they can expect during this transition is being revised. We organize an integrated network of resources to help parents find their way. This is relevant to all members of a community because when parents are supported to effectively advocate for themselves and their children, the whole community is strengthened. When the roots are nourished, the community thrives at every level.
Birth Roots builds a bridge from pregnancy to parenthood. 2

ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture may be the number one recommendation for improving reproductive health challenges. More times than we can count, families report that acupuncture is successful in supporting fertility, improving general health during pregnancy and postpartum, and for more specific circumstances such as encouraging the onset of labor, turning a breech baby, lowering blood pressure, improving low milk supply, soothing colic, encouraging postnatal healing, easing postpartum depression, and more.

BIRTH PLACES We are incredibly fortunate in Southern Maine to have so many options for where to birth. This is a common topic at the monthly Welcoming Pregnancy group at Birth Roots. Factors to consider include, where your preferred care provider practices, the type of setting that helps you to feel most relaxed, and whether your pregnancy is higher or lower risk. Families frequently interview several providers and tour birth place options - to get a sense of staff and routines - in either the first or second trimester. BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT & SERVICES Breastfeeding is an instinctive and natural experience, but not always as easy as we imagine. One of the most frequent comments heard in our postnatal classes is, “I wish I had gone into this with a better understanding of the unique challenges of newborn breastfeeding.” The first hours, days and weeks of establishing a new breastfeeding relationship has even been described as - another phase of the labor. A wide range of support and services are available. It is not uncommon to need guidance with your baby’s latch, increasing milk supply, determining which medications are safe while nursing, and simplifying breastfeeding after returning to work.

A Healthy Kid is a Happy Kid Dr. Lou Jacobs and the staff at Jacobs Chiropractic Acupuncture have enjoyed working with children, moms and dads for over 12 years. Chiropractic is a safe and drug-free option for many health challenges that occur early in life and before, during and after pregnancy. Chiropractic plays an integral role in helping pregnant mothers and babies restore balance to their bodies while optimizing function and ability to thrive. As a result, pregnancy, delivery and adaptation after birth are often easier while under the care of our doctors. Dr. Lou is the father of a 5 1/2 year old daughter and understands the joy and challenges of parenthood. Dr. Lou is a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and has completed his pediatric and perinatal training. He is certified in The Webster Technique. Reasons Parents Call: Sciatica Back pain Shoulder pain Neck pain Headache Anxiety Foot pain Difficulty lifting Difficulty walking Poor sleep Infant/Toddler asymmetry Latching issues Colic Failure to thrive Desire to improve pregnancy and delivery On the second Saturday of every month from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Dr. Lou hosts “Art, Science and the Human Body”, a workshop involving guided art projects, science and anatomy for kids ages 3-7. Coffee, tea and snacks are available for parents. Registration by phone is required. CHIROPRACTORS Throughout a pregnancy, many mothers find that their body can change in surprising ways. A mother’s spine and pelvis undergo many changes and adaptations to compensate for a growing baby. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy can improve nervous system function and spinal alignment and encourage greater health for mother and baby. Many babies respond well to Chiropractic techniques that help turn a breech or malpositioned baby, ease common pediatric complaints such as colic and ear infections, and provide general immune support.

FROM PREGNANCY TO PARENTHOOD
CLASSES & GROUPS PRENATAL & CHILDBIRTH Most of us do not have the benefit of seeing or participating in a labor and birth until it is our own. In generations past, seeing a cousin, sister, or aunt give birth, and helping care for her and her baby after, gave women a template for what to expect. Fathers are charting new territory with what it means to be a dad during pregnancy, birth and parenting. Prenatal classes fill in the gap in our understanding of how pregnancy, labor, birth unfold and help to reorient our thinking for a new phase of life.
Baby Basics at Birth Roots
207-772-4784 | 101 State St., Portland www.BirthRoots.org
This class provides you with a tool box for the first 3 months of parenting. You’ll also learn self-care strategies and tips to keep your partnership strong.
Beyond the Breast at Birth Roots 207-772-4784 | 101 State St., Portland www.BirthRoots.org
The practical information you need to know about expressing, pumping, storing and feeding breastmilk.
Birthing From Within at Birth Roots 207-772-4784 | 101 State St., Portland www.BirthRoots.org
Ancient wisdom and modern practices come together in this dynamic approach to childbirth education. Build confidence and gain an understanding of how to work with your body and the process of labor and birth. This is a lively, introspection-based class where couples learn to process the information they are hearing and see if/how it applies.
Infant Sleep Tip:
Swaddling is often recommended to sooth newborns but the receiving blankets usually used are far too small to adequately swaddle. 47” X 47” are the standard size.

Sibling Class: This age specific class provides parents and their children the opportunity to become more familiar with the Birthplace. Siblings will enjoy a tour and they’ll see a brief film about having a new baby in the family. Nurture Your Joy: This class is an informative overview of basic baby care from birth through the first few months. Topics like feeding, choosing a provider, getting the home ready, introducing pets, and childcare will be discussed. Daddy Boot Camp: Expectant Dads enjoy learning about fatherhood, and there’s lots to learn, issues like handling a newborn, responsibilities, bonding, diapers, feeding, pets, finances, post partum blues, family and friends...just to name a few.

You will immediately notice that something is different about the way classes and groups are facilitated at Birth Roots. We call this model Community Supported Parenting© – inspired by the practice of Community Supported Agriculture, which invests in and insures a future harvest. Community Supported Parenting© acknowledges that family trees have a more robust root system when there is a collective investment in the conditions for perinatal health.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION KNOW THE SIGNS AND GET HELP EARLY!
Baby Blues Signs and symptoms of the baby blues - which last only a few days or weeks - may include: • Mood swings • Irritability • Anxiety • Crying • Sadness • Trouble sleeping • Decreased concentration
Postpartum Depression Postpartum depression can come suddenly anytime in the 1st year. It may appear to be the baby blues at first — but if the signs and symptoms are more intense and longer lasting, eventually interfering with your ability to care for your baby and handle other daily tasks. Signs and symptoms of postpartum depression may include: • Loss of appetite • Feelings of shame, guilt or inadequacy • Insomnia • Severe mood swings • Intense irritability and anger • Difficulty bonding with the baby • Overwhelming fatigue • Withdrawal from family and friends • Loss of interest in sex • Thoughts of harming yourself or the baby • Lack of joy in life ~www.webmd.com
What you can do • Call your doctor or midwife and/or a mental health professional, 911 or 774-HELP in an emergency. • Get out for walks, visit with friends or come Birth Roots for Blossoming Newborns or Nest or other support groups listed in the Postnatal Support section of the guide, pg 37. • Outsource whatever you can. Get extra help around the house from friends, family or a postpartum doula. • Eat well and consider nutritional supplementation and any medications suggested by your care provider. Prescription medications aren’t always needed for mild depression but when they are, most are completely safe to take while nursing and are taken for a relatively short period of time to help you get back to a stable place where you can take over again. • Find a mental health provider you can talk to and a friend who will check up on you regularly. • Sleep is far more important than household chores or errands. Take naps when you can. Consider using ear plugs and an eye mask to help.

Birth Roots Key Concept
Why is the concept of "pluralism" so important to a perinatal resource center? Parents practicing diverse, even contradictory methods or philosophies can coexist in a beneficial and supportive relationship; it is a skill that can be cultivated. Our programs emphasize making sense of your unique experience so you can synthesize an individualized approach. We intentionally do not prescribe a specific style or method of birthing or parenting. 101 State Street, Portland 207-772-4784 | www.BirthRoots.org FROM PREGNANCY TO PARENTHOOD

Birth Roots Key Concept
The Fourth Trimester: “…human babies need the first three months of life to give their brain and central nervous system the time needed to mature. In the course of those three months, an infant develops into a baby who is able to respond to the outside world. Breathing starts to regulate. She becomes able to lift her head, smile, coo, develop social interactions, and begin to soothe herself. This time between birth and the end of a baby's third month is a unique stage of life that many now refer to as the "fourth trimester." www.parentmap.org

DOULA | LABOR & BIRTH The process of labor and birth is a complex collaboration of mind and body. A doula’s role is varied and unique to each family and each labor. Both parents report that their doula served them in ways they never could have imagined. Doulas bring the calm as an experienced guide for what could otherwise be an overwhelming experience. The following is one way a family might find and hire a doula: • Find a few names and contacts from the list below. • Call or email three or more doulas with your basic information to see if they are available for your due date and work where you are birthing. • Select at least two doulas and make appointments to meet face to face. Or visit a local doula gathering. • Select the doula that you and your birth partner are most comfortable with. If you liked more than one, sometimes your second choice can be your backup doula if the two doulas have a working relationship. • Meet with your doula two or more times until you are both confident that there is an understanding of your preferences and expectations

FROM PREGNANCY TO PARENTHOOD
DOULA | POSTNATAL CARE .........& IN-HOME SUPPORT
The realities of bringing home a baby are rarely what we imagined they would be during pregnancy. Compared to other cultures and countries, the US offers shockingly little support for new families. One way families have softened this reality is to hire a postpartum doula who brings her extra pair of hands and clear thinking to problem solving, meeting needs and keeping above water during this intense phase of parenting. Many new parents swear that a postpartum doula meant the difference between surviving and thriving as a new family.

Oxytocin: “Giving birth is an act of love, and each birth is unique to the mother and her baby. Yet we also share the same womanly physiology and the same exquisite orchestration of our birthing hormones. Our capacity for ecstasy in birth is also both unique and universal, a necessary blessing that is hard-wired into our bodies but that requires, especially in these times, that we each trust, honor, and protect the act of giving birth according to our own instincts and needs.” The Hormonal Blueprint of Labor by Sarah Buckley

Ways to care for a new family
1. Keep your visit brief: Unless you are there to help around the house, cook or care for older siblings, visits should be less than 15 minutes. Interruptions solely for the sake of visiting can interfere with a new mom’s ability to tune into her newborns feeding cues, reduce hormones needed for milk production and her ability to sleep when the baby sleeps. 2. Feed them: Bring food that can be frozen in double servings, make them a snack while you’re there and ask if they need anything picked up on your way. 3. Be helpful: Do the dishes and the laundry and give their pet lots of attention when you visit. 4. Ideas, yes. Unsolicited advice, no: What worked for you may not work for them. Offer ideas when asked but allow them to figure out what works for their unique baby and family. 5. Keep your germs to yourself: Wash your hands thoroughly, avoid wearing scented products, and don’t hog the baby – a baby’s place is in their mom or dad’s arms... unless you are asked to hold the baby so they can sleep or eat. 101 State St, Portland Maine 207-772-4784 www.birthroots.org FROM PREGNANCY TO PARENTHOOD

MATERNITY &
PRENATAL CARE PROVIDERS Most of the providers listed here offer well woman care throughout your reproductive life. When choosing who will care for you throughout your pregnancy and birth, it might be helpful to know that all of the providers listed here offer a similar, basic schedule of prenatal visits and tests for women experiencing a normal pregnancy. The differences are in where they attend births, specific skills, experience, special training, philosophies, prenatal visit routines, and birth routines. Many providers are willing to offer a “meet and greet” appointment or phone call throughout your pregnancy where you can get a sense of how well matched their services are with your preferences. Some questions you might consider; • Does this person’s routine practices, personality and philosophy fit with my preferences for birth and put me at ease about how I would be cared for? • What is the likelihood that this person will be the one at my birth and am I comfortable with the back-up provider(s)/partners? • What is their schedule of prenatal visits and recommended tests? • How long do visits last and what is the normal routine for a prenatal visit? • Are there any special skills or knowledge this person has that I want or need that set them apart from other providers? The following are brief descriptions of the certifications and specialties you might see as you make your decisions about who will care for you and your baby: Homebirth Midwives CPMs (Certified Professional Midwives)
They complete training and apprenticeships before becoming certified through NARM (National Association of Registered Midwives). They provide well woman care and midwifery care to women experiencing a low risk pregnancy and who wish to labor and birth at home with little to no intervention. Online resources: www.narm.org & www.macpm.org.
Hospital Midwives, CNMs (Certified Nurse Midwives)
They are registered nurses with advanced, specialized training in well woman care, pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. CNMs provide care in a hospital setting and work with families planning unmedicated births as well as those who prefer to use medical tools such as epidurals. Online resource : www. midwifery.org.
Family Practice Doctors, MDs and DOs
They have training in all aspects of health care for every member of the family. Some, including those listed in this guide, have additional experience and training to provide care during pregnancy, labor and birth. Some choose to make this the focus of their practice and work with a wide range of families. Online resource: www.familydoctor.org
Obstetricians
They are doctors who have advanced training and specialize in reproductive health and the care of women during pregnancy, labor and birth. Most work with a broad range of families; from those preferring a natural birth to those experiencing a higher risk pregnancy or birth and who need or want access to a wide range of medical tools. Online resource: www.acog.org
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
They are doctors with extensive advanced training who specialize in high risk pregnancies and deliveries.

Key Concept
Coastal Women’s Healthcare
Why is the concept of "pluralism" so important to a perinatal resource center?
With eight physicians, two nurse practitioners, a certified nurse midwife, and staff committed to creating a professional, caring, and respectful atmosphere for all patients, Coastal Women’s Healthcare is the gold standard of women’s healthcare in Maine.
Parents practicing diverse, even contradictory methods or philosophies can coexist in a beneficial and supportive relationship; it is a skill that can be cultivated.

NATUROPATHIC & HOMEOPATHIC PRACTIONERS Naturopathic and Homeopathic physicians diagnose and treat an underlying condition (rather than a symptom) and the person (instead of the illness) in a way that supports the healing mechanisms of the body. By improving the functionality of the body’s systems, the natural healing process is invigorated.

OSTEOPATHIC PHYSICIANS Osteopathic Medicine is based upon a science of healing which acknowledges that human beings possess an innate capacity for self healing. If the Osteopath (DO) can remove the obstructions in the system, nature “will kindly do the rest”. DO’s are fully licensed physicians, who practice all branches of medicine and surgery. Osteopathic training includes the same basic medical school curriculum as MD schools, with an additional 500 hours of training in manual diagnosis and treatment. Cranial Osteopathy is a type of Osteopathic treatment that offers the physician a deeper understanding of, and ability to communicate with, the human being’s living physiology, as well as a broader range of therapeutic options. This approach offers a gentle, safe and effective way to address the full spectrum of healthcare issues that affect pregnant women, newborns, and infants. Even the “normal” processes of labor and delivery are stressful events for mothers and children. The Osteopath provides prenatal care for the expectant mother to address issues that include morning sickness, swelling of hands and feet, sinus congestion, back pain, and preparation of the pelvis to ease labor and delivery. Osteopaths also treat newborns for a wide range of issues including colic, poor suck/latching, irritability, sleeplessness, ear infections, and structural strains. Written by Dr. Hankinson at OHM

WOMEN’S
HEALTH & WELLNESS Pre-pregnancy (being in a state of readiness to welcome pregnancy), pregnancy, birth, and postpartum often bring a new awareness as well as unique challenges to a woman’s body. You may find that a team approach is a good fit. Many women seek out practitioners with specific skills, awareness, and knowledge about the changes in physical, emotional, and mental health that can complement one another and offer complete care for the whole experience.

THE DEEPER THE ROOTS, THE HIGHER THE REACH
A visit to the dentist is an often overlooked but important part of your pre-natal health. Inflammation in the mouth (gingivitis or periodontal disease) is linked directly with pre-term delivery and low birth weight babies. Babies receive their oral bacteria from their mother so if mom has the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease, baby gets them too. Treatment during pregnancy can minimize the risk kids have future dental problems. Our office has advanced training in the elimination of inflammation from the mouth. We use the most non-invasive, comfortable, and natural approach.

List With Us Next Year Listings for next year’s guide may be submitted before March 31th, 2016. We expect to print 5,000 copies to be thoughtfully distributed throughout Southern Maine, and we also have the full guide available as a pdf on-line with coding that can be added to any website. We distribute this guide to Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, Midcoast Hospital, obstetric and midwifery practices, community locations, and the offices of many of those listed in this guide. Call, email, or visit our website to send your submission. Thank you for supporting Birth Roots. 207-772-4784 | www.BirthRoots.org Naturalists observed that, “Streets with more bird-friendly yards had almost twice as many species as those without.” ...and we have noticed that cities with more “Flock”-friendly habitats, like Birth Roots, have notably more engaged, robust and interesting networks as those without. - Leah, Emily & Jodi
