Freshman students receive a big Stag welcome on their first day of school!

From The President Fall 2021 Dear Friends of Miege, Bishop Miege High School was a beacon of light and hope for many students this past year as the world shut down around them due to the COVID 19 pandemic. It was amazing to witness the incredible perseverance displayed by students, parents, faculty and staff, who worked collaboratively to educate students both remotely and in person. Despite having to cancel or modify many school traditions, students proved to be resilient and creative in adapting to their environment. They achieved many academic accolades including a school record of six National Merit Scholars, two perfect ACT scores, a Debate State Championship, and state runner- up in Forensics. In the pages of this magazine, you will also see the many student accomplishments in sports and the Arts. We are truly blessed by an incredible community of alumni, parents and friends who support our school. As a result, our spring auction was our most successful in school history, with total proceeds of $542,748! Thanks to our generous Funda-Need donors, all 48 classrooms were updated with new technology including portable Smart boards and two-in-one faculty laptops. Wi-Fi throughout the building will also be updated. During this year of St. Joseph, I’ve been reminded of the challenges St. Joseph overcame in his life as a stepfather to Jesus.

Pope Francis explained that the “the carpenter of Nazareth was able to turn a problem into a possibility by trusting in Divine Providence”. We can use the example of St. Joseph to face the challenges in our world today by putting our faith in Christ Jesus. As a school community we will embrace this by living our faith joyfully, growing intellectually, spiritually and socially; and helping our students to become future leaders with integrity, hope, and a strong moral compass. I want to thank each of you for your ongoing financial and spiritual support of our students. I am hopeful that the 21/22 school year will allow for many opportunities to gather in prayer, thanksgiving, competition, and fun. I encourage you to join us at an upcoming school event. Sincerely,

Mr. Randy Salisbury President PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH Blessed Joseph, show yourself a father to us too and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Although challenged daily with the COVID protocols, students were able to overcome and maintain the spirit of Miege throughout the school year.

STRONG

Stags Persevere During the Year of the Mask Our world was turned upside down in the spring of 2020, when the country went into lockdown for what we initially thought would be three weeks. What a crazy 18 months we have lived through. Amidst this global crisis, Bishop Miege adapted quickly to provide uninterrupted learning to students in the spring semester of 2020 and for the entire 20/21 school year. What we learned from the pandemic Most students really enjoy school and missed it when they were unable to participate in the full high school experience. The freshmen never experienced a true all-school Mass, a full assembly, or the excitement of a Friday night football game; however, they were able to participate in an outside Mass in the stadium, eat lunch outside, and participate in the annual Stag Strut (modified for social distancing). Miege students built a new normal during the pandemic, winning numerous awards in academics, the arts, and athletics. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Faculty were creative with new approaches to virtual learning, performing, and competing. Miege students fully participated in academics, club activities, and sports - some virtually and some in-person, with masks and social distancing. The Miege community is resilient. Everyone stepped up

to make needed adjustments to keep students in school. Changes included taking temperatures as students came into the building, sanitizing classrooms between classes, smaller class sizes, learning how to use new technology, wearing masks, carrying heavy backpacks all day because no lockers were allowed, and refraining from physical contact like highfives, handshakes and hugs. What we will never forget • Thousands of families lost loved ones to Covid 19, their lives will never be the same. • Challenges in life can make us stronger. • God is always with us, and He provides for His people.

Bishop Miege High School, a Catholic community of faith, strives to develop the potential of our students through spiritual growth, academic success and stewardship. Fall 2021

STAGS IN ACTION

Bishop Miege Baseball Players to the Rescue! Project Uplift has been in the same warehouse for 26 years. In the beginning 30-60 people per night were served. Today, they can serve up to 400 homeless a night. More people served means more items coming in and going out in the same square footage. Generous donations were literally packed floor to ceiling. Winter items for the next year were overflowing. Coach Dan Meara and the Varsity Baseball team helped relocate all of the winter items (hats, gloves, scarves, coats, heavy blankets, thermals, boots). They helped pack the items into boxes and bags, then loaded and unloaded everything at the new warehouse space. Thanks to their team effort more space is available at Uplift. Donated items are now organized more efficiently to get things out on routes and into the hands of the homeless.

END-OF-YEAR MENTOR CELEBRATION

The Miege Peer Mentor Group treated students to an end-of-year treat at The Golden Scoop on the last day of school. This will be the second year for this program to promote inclusion and teach students leadership skills.

MIEGE STUDENTS LEAD THE WAY

Bishop Miege seniors Erin Garr, left, and Charlie Hill center, place a truss in the engineering department’s Structural Stress Analyzer as Hayden Clements observes. Students are all National Merit Finalists.

BISHOP MIEGE senior Aidan Oblepias believes being a

part of the innovative engineering and computer science program Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is the most meaningful part of his high school experience. “I think without it,” he said, “I really would have no idea where I would be going to college.

This year, six PLTW students are National Merit Scholars, including four Finalists. “Since I’ve been able to experience those real-world applications of problems [through PLTW], I kind of have a direction where I want to take my education.” Oblepias is not the only student to feel this way. Since the PLTW curriculum was introduced in 2016, the outcomes have been outstanding. This year, six PLTW students are National Merit Scholars, including four Finalists. Two of the six also received perfect scores on the ACT. The curriculum of PLTW is part of the high school’s

STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) initiative. It offers college-credit eligible classes in engineering and computer science. The courses prepare students for top engineering and computer science careers. According to STREAM coordinator Joan Gladbach, the “secret” of the program’s positive outcomes is project- based learning. “Students need to be able to think on their feet,” she said. “You see kids think differently when they take these courses. “They’re better prepared for life.” Bishop Miege principal Maureen Engen has seen that thinkon-your-feet behavior when she visits the classrooms “With traditional education,” she said, “the questions educators typically get are: ‘What’s on the quiz? What’s on the test? How much is it going to be worth? Does spelling count? “I’ve never once walked into a PLTW class where students weren’t talking about something on the computer or actually working together and building something.”

bishopmiege.com

“It teaches the skills people are really going to need when they go into the workforce,” she continued, “being a team player, being a team partner and knowing how to participate in a real collaborative effort and take your own part and be courageous enough to give your own opinion.” Courses allow students to experience science and technology in a way that informs them about what pursuits may suit them best in college. “I studied engineering in college,” said engineering department chair J.C. Clark, “with very little understanding of what it involved other than it was kind of hard and involved a lot of math and science. And that’s about it. “Here, students can build skills that I didn’t see until college — exposure to different disciplines in engineering, different technology pieces like using computer and design CAD software or the industry standard for architectural design or doing structural analysis on a truss for a bridge.” “That’s what’s cool about the program,” he added. “It’s studentdriven and student-directed, collaborative, project-based, hands-on, and applies authentic, real skills that they would need as engineers.” “They go into college with a real clear vision that this is something I’m passionate about and want to do,” Clark concluded.

STUDENTS INVOLVED IN PROJECT LEAD THE WAY HAVE HAD NOTEWORTHY SUCCESS SINCE THE PROGRAM BEGAN IN 2016 Along with giving students a clear vision of what they might want to study in college, project-based learning gives them a leg up on the standardized test that will help them enter the college of their choice. “It requires students to do a lot of trial-and-error to figure out what will work and what won’t work,” said Gladbach. “We don’t give them the answers; they have to figure out the answers. “That creative learning forces students out of the memorization and regurgitation cycle that we sometimes get into as educators, and pushes them into a realm of figuring it out as they go. “The PSATs are geared toward figuring it out as you go — they don’t require you to have something memorized.” With the success of PLTW, Bishop Miege is committed to incorporating the philosophy of project-based learning into every discipline so all students can reap the benefits of problem-solving through creative thinking. “We’re trying to make sure students see the responsibility of the skills they’re being taught beyond their high-school classrooms,” said Clark, “so they can become good citizens of our country and disciples of Jesus. “There are a million problems out there. Which problems are you going to solve? And how are you going to serve the church by doing that?”

National Merit Finalists SETTING ACADEMIC RECORDS: • 6 Overall National Merit Scholars • 4 National Merit Finalists • 2 National Merit Commended Scholars • 2 Perfect ACT Scores ALL PLTW Students & ACT STEM Scholars! Bishop Miege had a banner year with four students named as National Merit Finalists. ALUMNI SERVING THE NEEDS OF OTHERS WEST VIRGINIA OR BUST Traveling to West Virginia has been an annual mission trip over the years, but with the 2020 pandemic and last year’s uncertainty, the 2021 Spring Break trip was cancelled for two consecutive years. With mandates lifting towards the end of the school year, a group of Miege students were determined to make the trip and continue the tradition of giving back and doing service in Dunlow, West Virginia. The group was a combination of Class of 2021 alums, Class of 2020 alums, and a few kids from other schools including students from Cleveland, Ohio. The group worked at one site to complete a build for a family who were currently living in a trailer home. The groups were mixed on the project with the Cleveland school to promote fellowship. The trip was organized by current and past parents: Richard Sulzen (past parent) has led the WVA mission trip for a number of years, Nancy Miller (past parent and CMT Assistant this year) and a long time chaperone, Rich Vogt (current Miege parent) has gone on many trips in the past. RETIREMENT LOOKS GOOD FOR SEVEN IN 2021 Bishop Miege said so long not good-bye to seven pillars of the faculty as they retired from their teaching careers in May. A celebration took place with family and faculty to honor their time spent at our school. Special guests gave individual speeches about each member with great memories and laughs. Below are their own personal reflections about their time at Miege.

Brady Beek, Years at Miege: 23

Director of Guidance and Counselor, International Student liaison; Administrative Team member; Test Coordinator for ACT, PSAT, Placement Exams and Kansas Assessments; AdvancED Chair; Discipline Board and Care Team member; Graduation Activities; helped establish the SIT team; along with Dr. Passantino helped establish the first ACT prep program of its kind in the state; Asst Coach - football, wrestling and track; Head Coach Girls and Boys Golf Favorite experience/memory: Wrestling road trips with Coach Eller and company, attending sporting events and all the friends we have met and colleagues we have had the privilege of working with. Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: Life long friendships with the people I have worked with and all the free sports clothing. I haven’t had to buy a sweatshirt or t-shirt for the last 20 years!

Lisa Beek, Years at Miege: 23

Library/Media Center Assistant, Registrar Favorite experience/memory: The Christmas parties and my first time experiencing senior retreat!

10

I MIEGE MATTERS

Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: I have been so fortunate to work with so many special faculty and staff during my time at Bishop Miege.

Favorite experience/memory: I loved the Senior Retreat and being able to see the students in a more relaxed atmosphere/hearing their thoughts and reflections of their years at Miege.

Hank Brown, Years at Miege: 13

Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: All of the people I worked with are truly generous givers of their time and have their heart in helping young people be the best they can be. I am always impressed and amazed at the talent the students have in art, music, band, acting and sports!

Math Teacher, Detention Moderator Favorite experience/memory: I loved attending our athletic events. Most of the players have been my students, and it was a real pleasure watching them perform. I also enjoyed taking our students to Pittsburg State to compete in the annual Math Relays. Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: Interacting with students outside the curriculum through our “Life Lessons” discussions and Cheryl’s and my annual dancing program. “The dancing seemed much more memorable than any math instruction students received from either of us as it is always the first thing mentioned when encountering prior students - often even years later!”

Sarah DiDio, Years at Miege: 7

Family & Consumer Science Teacher, Service on the AdvancED Accreditation Committee, Social Concerns Committee, Kids Cooking Club

Mary Engler, Years at Miege: 24.5

English Department Chair, Facets Moderator, Volleyball Coach, Prom Moderator, Spelling Bee Coordinator Favorite experience/memory: The year I shared lunch schedule with Sr. Martina. She always ate after everyone else was finished and I had that period after lunch free so I began saving my lunchtime to eat with her. Her presence alone centered me for the rest of the day. She ate slowly with a purpose of enjoying her food, she told meaningful stories with the intention of teaching a lesson and when she smiled she radiated pure joy. Those lunches made a difference in my day.

(L-R) Steve Engler, Mary Engler, Brady Beek, Lisa Beek, Sarah DiDio, Dennis Mueller and Hank Brown

Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: I would say the experience of being a part of a very diverse community that reflects the blend of people in our world.

Dennis Mueller, Years at Miege: 8 Art Teacher, Swim and Dive Coach

Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: I will express my most valuable gift as the gratitude I have for the friends I have made over the years, for the humor I shared with others because laughter really does keep you young, and for the people I was meant to be with by accepting this job. I didn’t choose Miege, it chose me. I didn’t understand at the time why this was happening, but I trusted that it was right. God is good!

Steve Engler, Years at Miege: 6 Theology Teacher

Favorite experience/memory: In the Spring of 2018 there was a school shooting in Florida and students around the country were planning walkouts. I was privileged to work with a group of kids from all grades. We planned a respectful and reverent procession around the stadium carrying crosses and praying for those who lost their lives, which more than half the school participated in. It was a graced moment.

Favorite experience/memory: My students received 4 out of 5 awards from the first Archdiocese student Art show. Since then we have won the most awards overall. Another student receiving the school’s first perfect score from the AP College Board and receiving an unbelievable scholarchip to KC Art Institute. In swimming: winning our first State Championship for boys in 2014 with no year-round swimmers, just great athletes that wanted to become champions. Most valuable gift for teaching and working at Miege: The relationships that have been maintained with my artists and swimmers from being a mentor to lifelong friendships.

ENGLISH CLASS OF ‘68 RETIRES AS HEAD BASKETBALL COACH AFTER 45 YEARS After winning his 22nd state title, Terry English announced his retirement as the Bishop Miege girls’ basketball coach. English began his head coaching career in 1975 when the Girl’s basketball program was initiated. For the past 45 years his enthusiasm and dedication to Bishop Miege and it’s athletic department has been a driving force to the success of the girls basketball program and our student athletes. With an 84% winning percentage, coach English’s success on the court is second to none, and the impact he has had on his players’ lives is immeasurable. He was later recognized as “Coach of the Year” during the 2021 Kansas City Sports Awards TV broadcast by the Kansas City Sports Commission. (photo) Terry was recognized as the “Buck O’Neil Legacy Seat Honoree” during a Royals game for his outstanding career.

We

REMEMBER

The Bishop Miege community suffered a tragic loss on April 2, 2021 with the unexpected passing of Class of 2017 member, Joe Pedrotti. Joseph Michael Pedrotti, 21, of Fairway, KS passed away unexpectedly from a tragic accident called “shallow water blackout” on Good Friday, April 2, 2021. He is the loving son of Marc and Angie Pedrotti. He was born in Kansas City, MO on May 10, 1999. Joe attended St. Agnes Grade School, graduated from Bishop Miege High School in 2017 and was a senior at the University of Missouri studying Mechanical Engineering. At Bishop Miege, Joe was a 5-time state champion student-athlete (3 – Football, 2 – Basketball). At Mizzou, Joe was a Dean’s High Honor roll student and a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity where he represented his chapter at the Horizons Leadership Summit. Joe was awarded many scholarships at MU

Educate Yourself and Others 14

for his leadership and academic excellence including the Josh Seidel Scholarship, 2020 Builder’s Association Scholarship, Engineers Club of Kansas City, and Dave Wollersheim Scholarship. During his college summers, Joe interned at WaterOne and Black & Veatch in the Water Division. “No one is perfect, but Joe was about as close to perfect as a person can be. Joe was always loving, kind, humble, patient, self-assured, funny and hardworking. Many of us find it easy to do the right thing when others are watching; however, Joe was the person who did the right thing when no one was watching. He loved his friends and cherished all the time he spent with them.” - Kevin Gaughn, Class of 2017

Joe was the biggest fan of his younger siblings, always following them and extremely proud of their accomplishments. Joe touched many lives in his short time on this Earth. Even in death, Joe continues to give through his unselfish decision to be an organ donor. In loving memory of Joe, the Joseph Michael Pedrotti STEM Fund was established at Bishop Miege to benefit future students in the field of study Joe was passionate about.

Planning for the Future

ALUM NOTES

Have you thought about how you want to protect your spouse, children and assets? Do you want to minimize what the government will take in taxes from your heirs? Do you also want to help nonprofit organizations that have impacted your family? Estate planning is important to ensure your family is protected and that you are able to determine how your assets are distributed upon your death. Planning allows you to provide a legacy to the individuals and institutions that are important to you. As a nonprofit, Bishop Miege relies on the generosity of alumni, parents, staff, and others to continue to provide an excellent Catholic education to those who desire it. The school has been blessed by a multitude of generous friends throughout the years. Many have included Miege in their estate plans, providing legacy gifts that will impact students for years to come.

We asked longtime Miege friends, Sharon and Gene Schreiner, why they chose to include Miege in their will. They explained, “...because we believe strongly in Catholic education and all four of our sons graduated from Miege. Although when we designated funds or Miege we did not know if our grandchildren would have the opportunity to attend Miege, we thank God two are attending now”. 79 Alums showing support for “Carl’s Cause”
