Hong Kong Architecture Santina Bonini Hong Kong is the best proof of the Matthew effect, the phenomenon of cumulative advantage. What used to be a port has become a vibrant global city in permanent progress. The incredible harbour view, filled with glass towers on a sky-scraping blocks background, is just a part of a much richer place. This view represents the success of the finance driven city, now shifting toward a true global city with the integration of a synergetic cultural system bringing art and culture into daily living. The upcoming Hong Kong is conveying transformations in big and small scale. While the Government is operating in architecture and planning, the creative professionals transform the small level, and the two contaminate each other. The urban-level result is the largest cultural district worldwide, the West Kowloon, involving among the others, architects like Norman

Foster, Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano. These forty hectares of land will host museums, an art exhibitions centre and theatres. M+, the museum for arts, design and architecture designed by Herzog & de Meuron is already operating workshops. On the small level side, there is a continuous influx of creative people who are silently but actively operating transformations bringing to new life entire areas by opening new and original space for their activities, showcasing innovative products and interiors. Treasure hunting around Hong Kong is a must to discover art galleries on the 10th floor of a remote industrial building, restaurants in an old warehouse, and showrooms in parking lots. ------------------To read more architecture and design blogs from Santina Bonini, visit www.stylebyasia.com

Hong Kong Photography Polina and Skene Cinema and the city are our main influences and source of our inspiration. We share an inextricable link, constantly influencing and informing each other. The city of Hong Kong in particular maintains a dense fabric of social realities comprised of individual stories and dreams that accrue to form the city’s own unique narrative. This narrative, malleable in nature, is at once nostalgic and relentlessly forward, both dark and hopeful. This array of scattered narratives is the seed of our photographic stories. We use the chanced scenarios, encountered in the city and inject our surreal cinematic vision to capture this relationship between the city and cinema. The Color Studies project partially started because we have been spending too much time at the slightly crazy Sham Shui Po market, with its massive amounts of junk. Every image from this series has a different story, but generally, through building these elaborate scenes, and mixing contemporary
48
and historical cultural references, we are commenting on the notion of universal archetypes. The spy film inspired editorial was shot around the Yau Ma Tei fruit market area. Night cityscape is one of our favorite scenarios for fashion and portrait shoots. We think that Hong Kong, with its various artificial light sources, has a powerful and mysterious character, which really shows in these images. ------------------Polina Shubkina and Skene Milne, founders of Polina&Skene photography studio, met while studying fine art photography at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Hong Kong. With similar interests and aesthetic sensibility, they opened a studio where they use their fine art background to inform their commercial and fashion work. Hong Kong Street Art Erin Wooters Yip - Urban DNA Hong Kong has a booming art scene but what might easily elude local art lovers, is the city’s flourishing illicit art scene – ‘street art’ or ‘graffiti’, which in Hong Kong often requires a viewer to go and seek it out. While various niches of high-caliber illicit artworks exist throughout the greater territory, unlike other cities, they do not beg for attention. Community insiders often keep art locations quiet for fear of destruction of the artwork and urban art enclaves may be stumbled upon in the city, hidden from view of bustling streets often only meters away. The street art scene in Hong Kong is admittedly small, estimated at fewer than 25 active local participants. Some have been in the game for years and established a level of fame– the most prominent amongst local crews are the ST/ ART Collective (also known as Start from Zero), and Parents’ Parents. However, increasingly common in Hong Kong is the nonlocal visiting or resident artist who
50
is inspired by the visual dynamism of the territory, making the city his or her canvas. Works created by street artists from France, Italy, New York, Australia, Taiwan, England, and beyond can be found in the streets of Hong Kong and certainly rival homegrown artists in terms of prevalence. While illicit art may still be construed as vandalism, it is to Hong Kong’s credit that such art graces its streets. In effect, the city has been acknowledged as an indispensable destination for the global traveling creative, where art gains new dimensions of cultural meaning simply through its existence in the city space. Become curious, wander, and you will see, the streets of Hong Kong are a gallery for an international art movement that knows no boundaries. ------------------To read more street art blogs from UrbanDNA, visit www.stylebyasia.com

Juma
Brother and sister, Jamil and Alia Juma’s lifelong experiences across four continents are embedded in their casually sophisticated collection. In their later years, the duo lived in Kazakhstan where they spent time with their family picnicking in the outdoors, observing the mountain people and their customs. The siblings observed how the local people would survive in huts decorated with ornate blankets embroidered with batik and mirrors hanging on the walls and thick woolen carpets strewn on the floors for warmth. They watched the Kazakh’s adorn themselves in elaborately embroidered kaftans, which are tapestry printed dresses worn with wool trimmed velvet hats. They spent time travelling through Karachi, walking through bazaars watching the local artisans dye silks and hand embroider fabric for saris for the local designers. They spent hours on end with their mother at the tailors helping her sift through piles of brightly colored silks and books upon books filled with clothing embroidery. These images left cultural imprints with the Juma’s, and those imprints are the basis of many of their signature prints that are all carefully hand drawn and photographed.

Faguo
FAGUO is a French young, fashion and responsible brand founded in 2009. Frederic and Nicolas, 22 years old, were both interested in fashion & business-shop. 5 years ago, they decided during their university exchange semester in China to create a responsible sneakers brand, FAGUO. The name, FAGUO, means «France» or more precisely «Country of Law and Manners» in Chinese. They also had the idea to compensate the carbon emission due to the shoes production. For that, FAGUO’s concept is simple: we plant a tree for each pair of shoes & accessory sold. 300,000 trees are now in life!

We have daily debate on what constitutes ‘good’ design, but each time meet at the same conclusion; it must be the best it can be.
