The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland strives to create an inclusive school community serving boys in grades K-12 and to prepare them for the pluralistic society in which we live, work and play. Reflecting our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem, the School fosters an environment in which all members—students, parents and families; faculty, staff, and administration; and alumni and friends— feel welcomed and valued for their individual perspective. Boys’ Latin values diversity in culture, family configuration, gender, learning style, race, religion, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Originating from our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, Boys’ Latin strives to create a learning environment where the richness of human experience is recognized, respected and embraced. For 178 years, Boys’ Latin has focused on understanding how boys learn best. World-class faculty, challenging academics and character development are the hallmarks of a Boys’ Latin education. Here every boy is known – for who he is today and all that he can be tomorrow.

SETTING EVER-HIGHER STANDARDS –AND EARNING THE RESULTS OF HARD WORK.

From the strongest learner who wants extra challenges to those who would like more support, we meet the needs of every boy. We teach boys to think critically, question assumptions and expand their capacity for inquiry. So, whether our boys are challenging each other to build a championship-winning robot, collaborating on a multivariate calculus problem or debating current events, they are building the 21st-century skills they need to succeed in school and in life.

We think the results speak for themselves. Our graduates go on to attend top-notch colleges and universities, from Ivy League institutions to small liberal arts colleges, from large universities to military academies and art and music conservatories.

PREPARING BOYS FOR THE FUTURE –AND TO BE A VOICE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE.

Raising boys to thrive in today’s complex world has never been more challenging, or more important. At Boys’ Latin School, we purposefully cultivate the essential skills and qualities in boys, like treating others with respect, promoting equality, bringing their best authentic selves every day and building community. Here, boys own their role in fostering healthy relationships. We created the first One Love club in the nation and every year we set aside an entire day (One Laker | One Love Day), where students in grades K-12 participate in age-appropriate activities designed to empower students to promote healthy relationships.

STRIVING TO EARN A WIN –

ALWAYS EARNING RESPECT.

Playing and competing with character is at the core of athletics at Boys’ Latin.

Whether boys are participating in our lower school physical education program or competing as a varsity athlete in a championship game, they are expected to embody the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, respect and leadership.

At Boys’ Latin, we have a history of fielding winning teams, and as members of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association, student-athletes have the opportunity to compete at the highest level. Many of our student-athletes go on to play in college, choosing schools that match both their athletic goals and academic interests.

Athletes at every level experience the thrill of athletic competition and learn the value of resilience and perseverance.

A PURPOSEFULLY SMALL SCHOOL –WITH SPACE FOR MANY LEADERS RATHER

THAN A FEW.

At Boys’ Latin, we leverage the power of our small school to create a big stage for our boys. Unlike larger schools where students compete for limited spots on teams, in plays or within student government, we create space. Space for boys to explore new interests and experiences, and discover talents they didn’t even know they had. We ensure that all boys have the opportunity to participate in clubs, the arts, robotics and athletics without conflict. We believe boys shouldn’t have to make limiting choices, and a life-changing education calls for students to go beyond their comfort zone.

LEARNING TO DO WHAT’S DIFFICULT –

AND WHAT’S RIGHT.

Today, more than ever, we understand the value of character education. That’s why our core values – courage, compassion and integrity – are woven into everything we do and every aspect of School life. In the lower school, you will find boys learning about our mission - Esse Quam Videri (To Be, Rather Than To Seem) and our values. In middle school, boys take part in weekly advisory workshops focused on mindset, goal setting and resolving peer conflict. In the upper school, we give our boys opportunities to exercise their values as leaders: for example, serving on the student honor board or leading a retreat.
