TRUE EXCELLENCE SUPPORT BOYS’ L ATIN AND BECOME PART OF A HISTORY SHAPED BY ESSE QUAM VIDERI.
Because of You
A LET TER FROM OUR HE ADMA STER
Dear Friend, The generosity of supporters like you has played a crucial role in Boys’ Latin becoming the remarkable school it is today. Through the years, our alumni, teachers, parents and friends have ensured our growth through significant capital improvement projects and the delivery of unparallelled educational experiences. Because of you, we were able to make the move to Lake Avenue in 1960, connect the north and south sides with the Julian S. Smith Memorial Bridge 25 years ago, and build and renovate Ehrhardt, Hopkins and Sinclair Halls, the Iglehart and Gelston Athletic Centers, the Alumni House, and the new middle school.
Because of you, we’ve been able to cultivate a brotherhood that leaves no one out and lasts a lifetime. Because of you, we’ve been able to attract the best and brightest educators, whose genuine joy of teaching is matched only by a genuine joy of lifelong learning that deepens the expertise and insights they bring to every moment. And because of you, we’ve been steadfast in our commitment to support every boy’s discovery of and pathway to his very best self—his own true excellence. Thank you for helping us make Boys’ Latin a remarkable institution and a community like no other. Sincerely yours,
Christopher J. Post Headmaster

CLUB
Professor Topping was ahead of his time. He believed in teaching to each student’s individual needs and interests and not forcing students to learn by rote. His revolutionary way of teaching is still with us today—the needs of the individual boy always come first. CHRISTOPHER J. POST P’18, Headmaster

Bruce
GEORGE “DOC” During his BL tenure, J. Marshall Bruce served as assistant headmaster, dean of the faculty, and chairman of the English department.
CLUB
Mr. Bruce, as any of his students would tell you, was a master of the polysyllabic word. He believed the more a word twisted your tongue—and piqued your imagination and curiosity—the better writer and reader you would become. LEE M. KENNEDY ’73 Current BL History Teacher
Shipley
A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, George “Doc” Shipley first served as a BL teacher, and then became our fourth headmaster in 1917.
CLUB While the immediate object of the School [was] to prepare boys for college, Headmaster Shipley’s broader aim [was] to fit boys for life. In the treatment of each pupil his capacity, his temperament, and his individuality [were] considered, and the methods [were] varied for his needs. What [was] best for the boy [was] the deciding factor.” BOYS’ L ATIN SCHOOL 1931 CATALOG

Even now, years later, through the fog of time and my life’s memory, in my mind’s eye, I still see Doris Regan standing in a sea of boys (both my generation and all the generations of boys before and after me), like a lighthouse showing the safe path through life’s stormy seas. JON H. HOFFMAN ’76
