A LEGACY OF TRUE EXCELLENCE

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND

BUILDING A LEGACY OF TRUE EXCELLENCE. I welcome you to catch a glimpse of what makes Boys’ Latin a remarkable institution — a community that is singularly like no other. I hope you’ll get a sense of our values and our rich tradition that focuses on the challenges of today and the boundless possibilities that lie ahead for our boys. I hope that you’ll have a sense of the warmth and feeling of brotherhood that we purposefully cultivate on our campus through our faculty’s uncompromising commitment to each and every one of our boys. Above all, I hope you come to appreciate — as we do — the importance of allowing each boy to become his very best self in discovering his own path to true excellence. In the end, the success of our students is the only legacy that truly matters. Sincerely yours,

Christopher J. Post Headmaster

DEFINING TRUE EXCELLENCE

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND

TO BE, RATHER THAN TO SEEM— IT’S MORE THAN JUST OUR MOTTO. CONTINUING THE TRADITION. For more than 170 years, Lakers have embodied our Latin motto: Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem). For each of us, that means pushing beyond what seems sufficient to others. We seek true excellence in ways measured by deeper insights, extra steps, harder decisions and, ultimately, greater impact.

TRUE EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS

AN ALL-BOYS’ EDUCATION, DONE RIGHT. A SUPPORTIVE, STUDENT-CENTERED ENVIRONMENT.  Scholar, artist, musician, athlete, botanist — you name it.  At Boys’ Latin, it’s not one-size-fits-all. Our students thrive because we make sure they can go where their academic curiosity takes them and discover talents they didn’t even know they had.

LEARNING BY DOING IN THE LOWER SCHOOL. PUTTING LESSONS INTO PRACTICE. What does a curriculum focused on hands-on, experiential learning look like at Boys’ Latin? Lower schoolers raising trout to learn about ecosystems. Boys embarking on culinary adventures to understand metrics and taking scooter tours to measure speed. And students using their tablets to film each other’s speeches on how to “live like a Laker.”

MASTERY AND SELF-DISCOVERY IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL. FREEDOM TO LEARN. A challenging, but carefully calibrated, curriculum allows our boys to pursue true excellence on their own terms. Our rotating schedule with the upper school allows advanced middle schoolers to accelerate their progress by attending a number of cross-over classes. It is at this point that students also begin to experience a greater sense of freedom and responsibility, including to one another.

SOMEONE TO LOOK UP TO FOR LOWER SCHOOLERS. INTERACTIONS BEGIN EARLY. At Boys’ Latin, friendships naturally cross over grades beginning with Laker Buddies starting in the lower school. Each boy understands early on that they are an integral part of something greater than themselves: a brotherhood.

TRUE EXCELLENCE IN LIFE

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND

FRIENDLY COMPETITION FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS. ALL IN TOGETHER. There’s nothing like an all-out tug-of-war on our annual Maroon & White Day to show what your class is made of. More than the rush of victory or sting of defeat, our boys forge even stronger friendships and take from the field that day memories and bragging rights that will be recalled for a lifetime.

TRUE EXCELLENCE IN LIFE

THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND

AN UNFORGETTABLE FAREWELL IN THE UPPER SCHOOL. NOTHING COMPARES TO SENIOR FAREWELL AT BOYS’ LATIN. Profoundly personal, yet also the purest expression of our school’s brothers-for-life esprit de corps. Seniors celebrate their individual achievements, then come together as a class one last time to bid goodbye to every single person they leave behind, forever binding them to a remarkable legacy.

TRUE EXCELLENCE IN LIFE

ONE LOVE THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE. LEADERSHIP. COURAGE. INTEGRITY. COMPASSION. To us, these traits are inextricably linked.  At Boys’ Latin, service learning allows our students to build relationships through experiences they would not have had otherwise. These are the kinds of relationships that form enduring character and have the ability to change one’s life course to focus on making a difference in the world.
