ON THE COVER
POSTINGS This year’s Opening Convocation is particularly meaningful. We not only mark the customary beginning of the school year, but we also commemorate the start of the 175th year of the Boys’ Latin School of Maryland. As we embark on this year-long celebration, we have the opportunity to reflect on the rich heritage of the school we love while thinking boldly about our future. In this issue, we explore the unique and enduring qualities that make a Boys’ Latin education an experience that stands the test of time. You’ll read about faculty and administrators who are skilled at their crafts but even more gifted when it comes to connecting with boys, cultivating meaningful relationships and modeling what it means to live by our motto, Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem. In addition, you’ll read about two Boys’ Latin alumni and how the time they spent on Lake Avenue propelled them to achieve great things – one in the field of medicine and one as student body president on his college campus. Both men share how the qualities that define their success – honor, empathy and
determination – were first instilled in them during their time as students at Boys’ Latin. At the end of this magazine, you will find our 2017-2018 Annual Report on Giving. Every year, I continue to be inspired by the amazing generosity of our community. Your commitment to our school enables us to deliver on our mission of instilling the values of courage, integrity and compassion in each and every boy, and for that, we are extremely grateful. Finally, you will find some details around our calendar of events for the coming year. Central to our celebration will be the 175th Anniversary Gala, held on Saturday, April 6, 2019. The Gelston Athletic Center will be transformed for this landmark event, as we celebrate the past, present and future of our school. It’s sure to be an evening you won’t want to miss. All the best,
Christopher J. Post / Headmaster

FEATURES The Class of 2018 received their diplomas on June 2nd as part of the school's annual Commencement Exercises, becoming the 174th class to graduate from Boys' Latin. The legendary brotherhood that has come to define the Boys' Latin community is perhaps displayed no better than at the Commencement Exercises each spring. A rite of passage that elsewhere can feel worn and rehearsed, the Boys' Latin Commencement is far from mere pomp and circumstance. In fact, the traditions that Boys' Latin has adopted over the years have made for a moving experience that is meaningful to students, families and faculty alike. "When I speak to prospective parents in the admissions process, I promise that we will know each boy. We will cherish him, challenge him and love him," says Headmaster Chris Post. "I hope our visitors, but especially our families and our boys, walk away from Commencement knowing that we have fulfilled those promises." Helping classmates tie their bow ties, taking selfies with teachers and friends, listening to bagpipe music and memorable remarks— this year we look at the traditions that make Boys' Latin's Commencement truly special.
The Bow Tie
Special congratulations to the seniors who were recognized with the following awards: CHASE BAILEY with the J. Elwood Peter Memorial Award “established by Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Peter to a senior who, in the opinion of his classmates, possesses the characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct that manifest a spirit of love for and helpfulness to his fellow men as were exemplified by their son, J. Elwood Harrison Peter ‘34.” CHASE BAILEY with the Jack H. Williams Award for Benevolence “established in 1978 by the School in memory of Mr. Williams ‘38, beloved Headmaster 1962-78, whose concern and love for others was the paragon for the spirit of caring at Boys’ Latin.” JAYLIN ANDREWS with the Julian and Carolyn Smith Alumni Cup Award “established over 100 years ago in 1916 by the Alumni Association, dedicated in 2012 to the Smiths, awarded to a member of the senior class for leadership based on character.” EVAN FIELDS with the Senior Internship Award “presented to that senior whose project is judged to most outstanding” for his work with the Maryland State Police. CARSON REHFIELD, FRANCIS NNANNA, BRANDON KAGEN, KENNY LEWIS, MATTHEW POST and RASHAWN EVANS with Faculty Awards.

In addition to their diplomas, each Boys' Latin graduate receives a lapel pin and a maroon and white striped bow tie that they don for the ceremony. The morning of Commencement is spent in the Alumni House, tying ties, pinning boutonnières, taking pictures, laughing and reminiscing with teachers and classmates. While the bow tie is a common accessory in the Boys' Latin dress code, it's not mandatory, so not all boys know how to tie their own ties. Headmaster Chris Post is always eager to help. "It’s a terrific opportunity to quietly talk to each boy, see how he’s doing, and let him know how proud I am of him," he says. Headmaster Post helps Jamie Rice '18 with his bow tie

The Procession After the last few moments of preparation, the graduating class lines up and waits to process to their seats on the lawn in front of Williams Hall. The bagpipe music signals that it's time to begin, and then the boys—each wearing their Commencement bow tie— begin their final walk together as a class, joined by faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees. Bagpiper Andrew Shriver McGowan '12 has been leading the procession since 2010. After playing at several other school events, he gladly accepted the chance to play at BL's most significant occasion. "Being a Boys' Latin alumnus makes me even more proud of the graduates’ accomplishments," he says. "I’m honored to have the opportunity to help celebrate them." Senior Class Dean Beau Dagenais says the walk into the tent is a special moment, one that he remembers each year. "As class dean I get to lead them into the tent so that is always magic. It’s beautiful when the crowds see the graduates for the first time," he says. "There’s a real buzz— the excitement and the pride is absolutely palpable. It’s enough to make my hair stand on end every year."

The Valedictory Address While hearing a valedictory address isn't uncommon at graduation ceremonies, at Boys' Latin, it is the only speech given besides the Headmaster's Remarks, giving even more weight to this prestigious honor. This year's Valedictorian, Max Mygatt, talked about the pride and love he has for Boys' Latin. "We’re all going to miss this place. For some of us, like me, it has been our second home for as long as we can remember, and for others, it’s a home that you wish you moved into sooner," he says. "BL has shaped every one of us into a better person, a better student, a better friend, a better citizen. I could go on and on about all that BL has done for me. But the point of this speech is to remember what BL did for you and to appreciate the love we have for one another." The Headmaster's Remarks The most unique Boys' Latin Commencement tradition takes place as the diplomas are presented. As each graduate's name is called, Headmaster Post makes personal remarks about every single member of the graduating class. Post plays a part in writing those remarks, along with a small committee of faculty members. "Crafting our Commencement remarks is a tangible reminder of the enduring relationships our boys form with faculty members," he says. "Quite honestly, I don't think it happens at other schools that way." Teacher and alumnus Gene Ubriaco '89 watched his son, Michael, graduate this year. As he experienced commencement for the first time as a parent, the remarks definitely stood out. "All the remarks are spot on and there is no other way that proves how well BL knows the boys better than this tradition," he says.

An Excerpt from Valedictorian Max Mygatt's Remarks Pride is something I see every day when I walk onto campus. I feel this pride whenever I talk about Boys’ Latin. I see this pride in the eyes of athletes when they talk about their upcoming games, in my classmates when they get an answer right in class, in our teachers whenever we walk into the classroom. I saw this pride in the eyes of every one of us during Senior Farewell. This Laker pride stems from the love and respect we all have for one another, a love that has been nurtured and grown by BL loving us from the day that we came here, and that love gives us the confidence to be ourselves every day we arrive on campus. We’re all going to miss this place. For some of us, like me, it has been our second home for as long as we can remember, and for others, it’s a home that you wish you moved into sooner. BL has shaped every one of us into a better person, a better student, a better friend, a better citizen. I could go on and on about all that BL has done for me. But the point of this speech is to remember what BL did for you and to appreciate the love we have for one another. Appreciate the friends you made, the memories, the teachers who guided you along the way. Whether we are drenched in water at a lacrosse game, working hard in the classroom, playing on the field, or acting in the play, we all show our love for BL and each other every day, and that will continue into college and the future. Good luck to the Class of 2018, and remember, every day is a great day to be a Laker.

FEATURES Aspiring writers everywhere can attest to the frustration and disappointment that often come with attempting to have their work published. But accounts like these weren’t enough to dissuade senior Paul Agbaje from seeking to publish an essay he wrote last fall. Paul's essay, “Scribbles,” is a reflection on his experience taking the SAT and dealing with the inevitable pressure that comes with a test of such magnitude. The idea came to him as he was taking the test for the second time. “I was supposed to be focusing on the test, but I couldn't stop thinking, why am I here?” Paul remembers. This very question appears several times within the essay, along with the author’s concerns about a test whose influence on the lives of its takers seems to have gone completely out of control. “Standardized tests have exceeded their basic form,” Paul writes. “They’ve transmogrified to the status of social phenomena, ruling over the lives of students and possessing jurisdiction to accelerate or halt students’ trajectories. Just Google ‘SAT’ and awe at the 1.2 billion search results teeming with students seeking some wondrous formula to a high score that simply doesn't exist.” It was Paul's A.P. Language teacher, Mr. Matt LaFreniere, who saw the piece’s potential and encouraged Paul first to make it his college essay, and then to submit it to a journal for publication. Together, the two researched literary journals specializing in teen writing, in search of the one that would be the best home for the essay. They wrote a cover letter and a bio for Paul, and sent the piece off to five journals. Just three weeks later - a relatively short amount of time in the publishing world - Paul received an e-mail from the online journal, Body Without Organs, notifying him that his work had been accepted. The work was ultimately posted online in June. “As much as I thought the piece was worthy of publication, I had some anxiety about whether or not it would be accepted,” Paul says. “I prepared myself for rejection, but of course, I was thrilled when I got the news.” This wasn’t the first time Paul’s work had received accolades: his personal essay about Of Mice and Men was recognized two years ago in the Letters about Literature essay contest, sponsored by the Library of Congress. Paul, who will attend Cornell University in the fall, is humble about achievements, but his teachers aren’t surprised at his success. “Whether he knows it or not, Paul writes because he has to, because he’s afflicted by the beautiful sickness only a love of language can spread,” says LaFreniere. “He is a writer not by choice, but by condition—a condition I hope he never loses.” Paul’s writing accomplishment was just one of several successful endeavors in his senior year at Boys’ Latin. For one of his final projects, Paul worked with two of his classmates – seniors Hunter Isaac and Max Franklin – to create a podcast called “Three Halves,” in which the hosts discussed some of the issues they encountered as students facing impending graduation.
“Paul used his gifts for language, his capacity to listen and his nose for winnowing nuance from white noise,” remarks Mr. Al Freihofer, upper school English teacher, in response to the project. “These are the attributes that make Paul a triple threat for good.” Mr. Adam Osborn, Paul’s teacher for AP United States History – a notoriously challenging class – echoes the same sentiments. “Paul is not a spectator,” Mr. Osborn comments. “He also has a natural curiosity, so it’s easy to talk to him about a variety of subjects. He asks interesting questions. He listens - he doesn’t reload waiting for you to finish.” Communication skills like these served Paul well in his role as a writing center intern. His job there was to confer one-on-one with other students – often underclassmen – and to read and comment on their written work. Paul’s willingness to drop everything to help his peers, and his ability to communicate clearly and without any hint of condescension, made him one of the most highly soughtafter interns during both his junior and senior year. In the days leading up to essay due dates in freshman English classes, he could reliably be found working with a younger peer at a desk in the writing center, passing down good advice in a typically unassuming manner. While Paul excelled in humanities classes throughout his high school career, he is equally known for his technical prowess. An avid gamer, he is practically an encyclopedia of knowledge about Minecraft, Skyrim and FIFA. In fact, his senior speech espoused the practical values and skills that can be derived from playing video games. Paul was often able to apply his computer skills to his schoolwork in creative ways: he became well-known for his video projects in academic classes, which were invariably full of wit, knowledge and slick video production. The upper school awards assembly, held on May 2nd, proved an especially big day for Paul: he earned both the Claude Talmadge King Award for excellence in Latin and the English department’s Writing Prowess Award. And to top it off, he was inducted into the National Honor Society. Paul reacted to the year’s string of successes with characteristic humility. He found himself especially moved by Senior Farwell, the final chance for seniors to say goodbye to teachers, peers and other members of the BL community. “As I walked around the room and interacted with everyone, memories continually enveloped my mind,” he says. “I was reminded of everyone's effort in making my BL experience as great as it was. For me, the most moving parts were the encounters with teachers; their optimism for all of our future endeavors seemed very genuine.” Of course, when a student accomplishes as much as Paul has so far, it’s easy for anyone to be optimistic about what the next chapter holds.

Madame BL’s Own Légende Vivante by Alex Barron
As she begins her 38th year teaching French in the upper school, Terry Howell is a bona fide BL institution. In fact, she is so widely known and beloved that she, like a pop star, is known almost exclusively by her one-name moniker: Madame. Longtime upper school history teacher Butch Maisel is one of few people on campus who remembers Madame’s rookie year. The two joined the faculty together in 1981 and are currently tied as the two longest tenured teachers in the upper school. “Terry is a living legend,” says Maisel of his colleague. “She is highly respected by students, parents and fellow faculty. When alumni come back to visit, they always want to stop in and see Madame.” He also attests to her formidable presence in faculty meetings: “Madame is a quiet giant, usually behind the scenes. When she makes a comment, everyone listens.” These days, it’s hard to imagine Boys’ Latin without Madame Howell. However, her arrival on Lake Avenue was somewhat unlikely. “When Boys’ Latin first called me, I knew nothing of private schools in Baltimore,” she remembers, “I didn’t even know if I wanted to teach French.” Madame had just graduated from Morgan State University and was student teaching in Baltimore City when she was contacted by then-Headmaster E. Standish Bradford. The upper school faculty at the time was a largely homogenous group, consisting of only one female instructor and no people of color. But in an effort to diversify, Bradford reached out to a friend at Morgan State when it came time to fill an opening in the foreign language department. Bradford called her in and offered her the position soon after. Decades later, Madame still speaks fondly of her first boss. “He was the one who took the initiative to take a chance on me,” she says.

Next to her first yearbook picture was this quote from Madame: "Thank you Boys' Latin for a most warm welcome! The friendliness and unity amongst all members of the Boys' Latin family have impressed me greatly. I love to share my knowledge of the French language and culture with such a select and friendly group of students."
Given Madame’s status as a woman, a person of color and an outsider to the world of Baltimore independent schools, some feeling of culture shock would have been understandable or even expected. But, as has been her way throughout her time at BL, Madame faced the challenge with poise and courage. “You might say it was culture shock,” she recalls, “But it wasn’t something I dwelled on.” Instead, she looked forward to what was her first real teaching job. “I was fresh out of college,” she says. “I was excited to teach. I wanted the opportunity to exercise my craft, to share my authentic knowledge of the French language and culture afforded me by a Fulbright Scholarship to Nice, France.” Madame credits her relatively smooth transition to her varied educational background. As a student, she attended both segregated and integrated schools at various times, and thus felt prepared for any environment. The AIMS (Association of Independent Schools of Maryland/DC) People of Color organization, composed of African-American faculty members from area schools, also helped her to acclimate to her new professional life. “It was good to find that kind of collegiality and support,” she says. Madame served for two years as president of the organization and still maintains some of the friendships she made there. With amusement, Madame recalls her early days at BL, in which she taught both Spanish and French in a tiny classroom. Now the office of Megan Kenney, upper school counselor, the room rarely ever holds more than five people at a time. But in the days before the expansion of the building, it held classes of 12 to 14 boys. Although she managed to teach effectively in this environment, Madame prefers her new, roomier classroom. “As a result of the new space, I have so much more freedom,” she says, “I jump, hop, skip and fly through the room. I need to be able to move around a lot. I dance, I demonstrate, I make faces.” Having sung in various groups since her childhood, Madame is no stranger to the stage, and being at the front of the classroom brings out her inner performer. She compares herself to one of her musical
14
idols, Michael Jackson. “When he was on stage, the world was his oyster,” she says, “That’s how I feel when I’m teaching.” Over the course of her time on Lake Avenue, Madame has witnessed great changes to every aspect of the school, from its physical grounds, to the makeup of its student body, to her and her colleagues’ instructional practices. She is proud of the school’s increased implementation of boy-based learning practices, and its continued cultivation of the Learning Center, which supports upper school students with learning differences. Most of all, she is pleased with the school’s ability to accommodate and celebrate different types of students and the way it is able to foster community, friendship and brotherhood. Among the developments that have contributed to BL’s emphasis on community, Madame cites the work of the Diversity Club and One Love Day, an annual program designed to raise awareness about relationship violence and the importance of healthy relationships. “When I started, who would dare to think about these things?” she says, “But we have to address those big issues. We are a microcosm of the larger world, and that means we need to focus on relationships.” As so many students and faculty can attest, Madame knows plenty about maintaining strong relationships. “Terry means the world to BL!” says Kristen Tubman, Madame’s longtime friend, colleague in the world language department and co-sponsor of the Diversity Club. “She’s an incredibly hard worker. She makes coffee for everyone. She is always there when she’s needed, without even being asked. She’ll give her colleagues a pep talk or a listening ear or a gentle correction, as needed. And she cares so deeply for her students in all aspects. Some of them even call her ‘Mom.’” In her French classes, Madame will occasionally invoke France’s national motto: “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité,” or “Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood.” The words work just as well as a motto for Madame herself. Over nearly 40 years at BL, her words, her actions and her very presence have served to promote liberty, equality, and, especially, brotherhood.

A Familiar Face Takes Over as BL’s New Head of Lower School
FEATURES
by Alex Barron
Boys’ Latin saw a changing of the guards this fall, as Greg Schnitzlein took over as the new Head of Lower School. A familiar face on Lake Avenue, Schnitzlein joined Boys’ Latin in 2007 as a third grade homeroom teacher. Since then, he has taught a variety of subjects in grades two through five before becoming the Assistant Head of Lower School six years ago. “When I came to Boys’ Latin, I knew that my personality and teaching style were perfect fits for the boys and their families,” he says. “I enjoy the balance between knowing how to best reach our boys academically and emotionally while maintaining high educational standards.” As an instructor, Schnitzlein fully committed himself to boy-based learning practices and expects to do the same as the Lower School Head. “Hands down we ‘get’ boys better than other schools,” he says. “You see it in the way our teachers teach and our boys learn. It is evident in every part of the lower school from kindergarten to fifth grade. You can see it in the classroom and on the playground.” He also values BL’s emphasis on character education. “The focus we place on the core values of courage, compassion and integrity allows us to develop men of good character with a high sense of honor and personal responsibility,” he says. “It is no secret there is a special brotherhood at Boys’ Latin and those relationships our boys cultivate in later grades start here in the lower school.” Certainly, Schnitzlein’s influence on the BL community has already been felt. He recalls a humbling moment years ago when, before delivering a speech to the middle school, he asked the audience how many of them had been his students. The sea of raised hands proved to be a moving sight. “It gave me the opportunity to see how many students that I have impacted during my time here,” Schnitzlein says. “The smiles and looks of encouragement made an otherwise nervous moment into such a comfortable one.” Kathy Arnold, Schnitzlein’s predecessor as Lower School Head, looks forward to watching her long-time colleague take the reins. “When I arrived eight years ago, I noticed right away that he was a gifted instructor,” she says, “He has exciting ideas and I can’t wait to watch him in the role.” Schnitzlein is eager for the new challenges facing him. “I am most looking forward to putting my passion and energy toward making this school and our boys the best we can possibly be,” he says. “We are in such a great place as a school. We have a fabulous faculty who are truly experts in educating boys. Our parents are dedicated to the school, supportive of our teachers and welcoming to new families. The boys love coming to school and all have the opportunity to develop a strong moral foundation.” While the life of an administrator is a busy one, Schnitzlein has resolved to spend as much time as possible teaching, mentoring and interacting with students. “That is the sole reason we are here,” he says, “The boys.”

FEATURES I remember September 5th, 2008, as if it were yesterday. Nearly 1,000 students and faculty, alumni, parents, guests and trustees gathered on a picture-perfect, late-summer morning for my installation as Boys’ Latin’s 14th headmaster. I was filled with a sense of nervous anticipation, as this would be the first opportunity I would have to address our school community. In my opening remarks, I remember saying that our school exists for the boys of Boys’ Latin. Looking back over the past 10 years, I believe these words have guided our every action and decision. From the mundane to the monumental, we’ve been guided by the framing question of what is best for our boys. In the past decade, we have significantly enhanced our K – 12, academic and co-curricular program. We have added Advanced Placement (AP) courses in each academic department in the upper school while bolstering other course offerings throughout the division. This fall, we will introduce Chinese as an additional world language. In the middle school, we revamped the eighth grade history curriculum to focus on civics, current events and American history and government. We introduced the Innovation Program through which all of our middle school students select a variety of applied academic areas to explore throughout the year. In the lower school, more and more classroom activities have come to feature hands-on applications, from the ‘trout project’ where students watch fertilized eggs grow into thriving baby fish to a variety of multidisciplinary lessons that unite various themes from kindergarten through fifth grade.
018
"As I consider the past 10 years, I can't imagine a more noble or important work. And I can't wait to see where the next 10 years will lead us." We have also worked deliberately to reinforce the ties that bind us together as one school, united K – 12. Our students now have access to – and participate in – an incredibly vibrant co-curricular program. From robust choral and instrumental music ensembles in each division, to our nationally acclaimed robotics program that begins in lower school, our boys are able to apply those lessons of leadership, teamwork and creative problem solving. Building on the early success of the Laker Corps (our upper school – lower school mentoring program), there are now intentional mentoring opportunities among all divisions which include fifth graders mentoring our youngest students in kindergarten and first grade. On any given afternoon, you can walk through the lower school and see a steady stream of middle and upper school ‘buddies’ in classrooms or on the playground, modeling what it means to live like a Laker. Of course, none of this is possible without a talented and dedicated faculty. I have witnessed, time and again, teachers who have given their full selves to our boys. I have watched teachers inspire students to think creatively, to seek deeper understandings, to take risks they
never could have imagined and to act with the utmost of integrity. I have seen faculty members form extraordinary relationships with students, helping boys confront and embrace the full range of possibilities for their lives. And, I have observed faculty members act individually and collectively to represent what it means to be a leader in boys’ education. Where once Boys’ Latin was new to the conversation about boys’ education, we are now recognized as global leaders and first adopters. Over the last 10 years, we have closely collaborated with international experts and researchers to understand how boys learn best and then employ that learning in every experience. In addition to hosting the annual conference of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition, we have had several faculty members present workshops and participate as cohort members in Action Research, a global research project on best practices in boys’ education. Our faculty understand and celebrate all that it means to be a boy. We appreciate the energy, competitiveness and risk taking of boys. We seek out ways to engage boys in a real-world application of knowledge, so that they grow in their sense of agency and responsibility to themselves, their community and the world around them. Ultimately, we have become exemplars of what it means to build enduring, personal relationships with boys, inspiring them to strive not just for academic but for personal excellence. That notion – of striving for academic and personal excellence – is most clearly affirmed at Commencement. I have had the great fortune to watch hundreds of boys experience Boys’ Latin and to see how each boy makes a difference in the life of our school. Each graduate stands with me and hears a reflection we’ve written about him, affirming the sum of his good work, his strong character, and most importantly, sharing an image of that very best version of himself that he’s been striving to achieve. This year was particularly meaningful as my own son, Matthew, joined the ranks of proud BL alumni. For the past 10 years, I have had the great fortune of seeing him experience Boys’ Latin, every day. I have seen how the community – particularly the faculty and his classmates – have contributed to his growth as a young man, how they’ve pushed him, held him accountable, and laughed with and loved him. And I have also seen, firsthand, how Matt has been able to make a difference in the life of our school, how he’s grown as a student, a leader, and a friend. That’s not something most fathers have a chance to do, and it made our time together particularly poignant. I find myself at each Commencement brimming with pride for the young men who stand before me, and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the community that makes it happen. When I consider all that’s been accomplished over the past decade, the greatest source of satisfaction for me is our unfailing commitment to our mission, embodied in our motto Esse Quam Videri: To Be, Rather Than To Seem. Our school has remained faithful to the original intentions of our founder Evert Marsh Topping, made personal for so many in the legendary headship of Jack Williams. In word and in deed, our school exists for our boys. We know each boy; we cherish him for whom he is, and we compel him to strive to be his very best. As I consider the past 10 years, I can’t imagine more noble or important work. And I can’t wait to see where the next 10 years will lead us.

A Decade of Impact
New Fund Honors Headmaster Christopher J. Post's 10th Year at Boys' Latin by Cathi Hilpert
Last year marked Headmaster Christopher J. Post's 10th year on Lake Avenue. A career educator, Post first worked as an intern in the Boys’ Latin middle school nearly 25 years ago before moving on to a variety of teaching, coaching and administrative positions at independent boys’ schools throughout the mid-Atlantic. In 2008, Post returned to Boys’ Latin to serve as the school’s 14th headmaster. Since his return to campus, he says he’s fortunate to have watched hundreds of “good boys grow into great men.” Whether seeing the wide-eyed enthusiasm of new lower school students on the first day of school or witnessing the “aha” moments of upper schoolers when a new concept clicks, Post believes none of these moments would be possible without a faculty that he describes as second to none. “The Boys' Latin faculty continues to amaze. They are teachers, advisors, mentors, coaches and life-long friends,” says Post. “Every single one of them is constantly finding ways to enrich the classroom experience, engage students and build stronger connections. They put in long hours to get to know each boy and, through that personal experience, help our students discover their unique talents and strive to be the very best they can be.”
So, when the Boys’ Latin Board of Trustees decided to recognize Headmaster Post with a designated fund in honor of his decade of service, it only seemed fitting that the fund would support what Post views as one of the school’s most valuable resources: its teachers. Called the Chris Post Fund for Faculty Support, the new fund will allow the school to continue to recruit and retain a world-class faculty, expand its professional development programs and advance its mission of instilling the values of courage, integrity and compassion in every student. “Chris understands that an outstanding faculty is critical to the experience of students and has prioritized hiring, training and retaining an outstanding faculty,” says Nicholas King, President of the Boys’ Latin Board of Trustees. “Our boys are fortunate to have him as both a leader and a role model.” Richard Bagby ’82 agrees. “Chris has touched the lives of many people in the Boys Latin community in the past 10 years,” says Bagby, a Boys’ Latin alumnus, parent and current treasurer of the Boys’ Latin Board of Trustees. “He’s dedicated to knowing and cherishing each student for who they are. He not only supports them in their academic pursuits, but he also teaches them what it means to become honorable young men with a strong sense of moral character. I am proud to honor him in this special way.” To date, more than 40 Boys’ Latin families have contributed to the fund, raising more than $530,000. To view the full list, see page 27 of the Annual Report. “On behalf of the Board, I want to express our appreciation to all of those who have participated in the fund so far as well as those who plan to make a gift in the future,” adds King. “These collective contributions not only honor Chris and all that he has done for Boys’ Latin but will also help to ensure that our campus remains a place committed to excellence and innovation for many years to come.”

CAMPUS NEWS
WINTER & SPRING SPORTS / wrap-up BASKETBALL Coach Cliff Rees
This year’s basketball season surpassed expectations in a conference stacked with talented opponents. The Lakers finished the season 25-7 and, at one point during the team’s playoff run, was ranked number two in the Baltimore metro area by The Baltimore Sun. After claiming an upset win at top-ranked St. Frances in the semi-final round of the playoffs, the Lakers came back from a 17-point deficit in the championship game and took second-ranked John Carroll into overtime. “Regardless of roles or playing time, we had 12 players who supported each other throughout the season and had fun even when things may not have been going our way,” Rees says. “As a coach, I truly believe it was the camaraderie, outstanding character of our players and leadership of our five seniors that enabled our success this year.” Senior Jaylin Andrews broke BL’s all-time scoring record with 1,613 points and averaged 18.2 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.8 steals per game. Jaylin, an All-MIAA selection, will continue his basketball career at Loyola University Maryland. Junior Cameron Spencer was an All-MIAA selection as well. Senior Kenny Lewis was a tremendous hoopster as a captain and the team’s leading rebounder. The team finished the season with a #7 ranking in The Baltimore Sun. Coach Rees was also named The Baltimore Sun Coach of the Year.
ICE HOCKEY
Coach Chris Maisel ‘04 While the varsity ice hockey team did not qualify for the MIAA-B Conference playoffs, the Lakers had an excellent season with several standout players. Team captain and senior goalkeeper Travis Smith earned the Butch Maisel Award, which recognizes effort, grit and tenacity, as well as All-MIAA honors. Senior captain J.P. Barbeau was also selected as All-MIAA and was named team MVP. In addition, J.P. was the team’s leading scorer with 22 goals and nine assists. Fellow team captain and senior Andrew Glover was another All-MIAA selection. Freshman Tommy Ozonoff won the Coaches’ Award and Senior Luke Koehler earned the Spirit Award. Thanks to Coach Chris Maisel and Coach Gene Ubriaco for their many contributions to the team during their final seasons serving as coaches.
SQUASH
Coach Jim Magee '73 The varsity squash team finished the season with a record of 8-6, led by captains Hunter Isaac, a senior, and Logan Thomas, a junior. Both players
BLS_MagFall18_pages.indd 19
provided great leadership to a young squad. Thomas also received the Spirit Award in recognition of the dedication, sportsmanship and toughness he exhibited throughout the season. Freshman John Bryan was named the team’s MVP and played the #1 spot.
WRESTLING
Coach Justin Fitch ‘05 Boys’ Latin’s wrestling team competed in an extremely tough MIAA-A conference. Although the Lakers had only one conference win versus Calvert Hall College, the team improved throughout the season. Senior captain Jamie Rice placed first in the Snowverlea Invitational wrestling tournament and was invited to participate in the National Prep Wrestling Championships. In addition, team MVP Mac Alban, a senior, placed second at Snowverlea and proved to be one of the best wrestlers in the region. Senior Brandon Kagen won the Spirit Award, while his brother, Justin, a freshman, won the Rookie of the Year Award. Sophomore J.T. Morton had a great season and earned the Most Improved Wrestler Award. With a talented group of freshman wrestlers, next season looks promising for the Lakers.
BASEBALL
Coach Bill Greenwell The Lakers won their third consecutive MIAA-B Conference Championship with a 6-1 win over Glenelg Country School. Great pitching, stellar defense and above-average hitting helped the team secure an overall record of 21-5-1. Seniors Matt Luterman, Cole Jarrett and Jackson Gazin and junior Sam Grace were All-MIAA performers. Pitching contributions from Grace, seniors Ned Ruffin and Max Mygatt, junior Josh Butler and freshman Liam Karey gave the team consistency. Case Western Reserve-bound Jarrett was a team captain and leader both offensively and defensively. He says the Lakers enjoyed their time together and the winning took care of itself. “Playing with these guys has been the highlight of my Boys’ Latin career,” he says. Gazin agrees, adding that Coach Greenwell also was a huge factor to the team’s success. “He’s a great guy. The thing about Coach Greenwell is he knows his players well and what works for them.” With plenty of young, rising talent, Boys’ Latin hopes to keep the momentum going throughout the next season.
GOLF
Coach Gates Blair ‘09 The Boys’ Latin’s Varsity Golf team was a “threepeat” champion of the MIAA-B Conference,
finishing the season with a perfect record of 12-0 and defeating Severn School, 13-8, in the championship match at Caves Valley Golf Club. The strength of this year’s team carried BL to victory, thanks in large part to several veteran players. Sophomore captain and MVP Jack Halleron played the top spot all season and finished #14 in the final MIAA individuals. Seniors Eric Freitag and Bryce Atkinson stayed in the line-ups and helped win points almost every match. Atkinson, who was also a captain, won the Mason Champion Award. Newcomer Connor Walsh, a senior, was a strong #4 and only lost a handful of points over the course of the season. The team’s #5 and #6 – juniors Willie Wright and Connor Stevens – were the anchors. “We had a ton of fun and look forward to next year,” says first-year Coach Gates Blair.
LACROSSE
Coach Brian Farrell ‘06 Boys’ Latin finished the regular season 7-3 in conference play while securing a #4 seed in the playoffs. Playoff victories against St. Mary’s (11-5) and McDonogh (8-5) propelled this talented group to the final against Calvert Hall College. Playing with great effort and passion, the Lakers came up short 8-6 in the final, but the team still had much to celebrate. All-MIAA senior goalie Chris Brandau earned first team All-Metro honors while being named a U.S. Lacrosse High School All-American. Chris was also the team’s co-MVP, and he will continue his lacrosse career at Georgetown next fall. Senior attackman Matt Brandau was a captain, recipient of the “Never Quit” award, an Under Armour All-American selection, an All-MIAA selection, a second-team All-Metro selection and recipient of the Most Assists Award. Matt will play at Yale next year. Senior captain Michael Ubriaco, who will head to Villanova next year, was an All-MIAA and first-team All-Metro selection, a co-MVP and winner of the Ground Ball Award. Sophomore Brendan Grimes, an All-MIAA and first team AllMetro selection, had an exceptional season with 61 goals and 13 assists. A special thanks to Coach Gene Ubriaco ‘89, MIAA Assistant Coach of the Year, for his years of dedicated service to BL lacrosse.
TENNIS
Coach Jim Magee '73 The varsity tennis team completed their season 1-6 in conference play. Captain Ryan Hurley, a senior, was the team’s MVP. Fellow captain Josh Meister, a junior, was named most spirited, and Ari Wister was named the most improved player. The team, led by Coach Jim Magee, looks to continue to build and BOYSLATINMD.COM 19 grow in preparation for their upcoming season.

CAMPUS NEWS
HIGHLIGHTS
Puerto Rico Service Trip: Immediately after final exams, a group of 22 upper school boys and four faculty and staff members departed for Puerto Rico to provide service to small communities still recovering from Hurricane Maria. “The most important thing we did was connect with people from these communities,” says upper school history teacher and ninth grade dean Mac McDonald, who led the trip. “Despite not sharing a language, our boys were able to communicate through painting, construction, gardening, basketball, dancing and through their compassion and desire to help.”
One Laker | One Love Day: For the fourth year in a row, Boys’ Latin students in all three divisions devoted a day to exploring how to build healthier relationships and be ambassadors for positive change. The lower school focused on choosing kind; the middle school focused on self-care and self-expression; and the upper school explored the devastating impact of relationship violence and ways to prevent it.
8th Grade Bridge Crossing: The Class of 2022 celebrated the completion of middle school by crossing the bridge to north campus this spring. Headmaster Chris Post, Upper School Head Brian Mitchell and ninth grade dean Mac McDonald officially welcomed the boys to the upper school and congratulated them on reaching a new level of the BL experience – one that not only requires more from them, but also rewards them with more independence.
Vanishing Wildlife: As part of the Middle School Innovation Period, middle school art teacher Sarah Mogliazzi offered a Vanishing Wildlife activity for the second year in a row. In it, the boys choose endangered species and recreate them using bottles, cardboard, paint and other supplies. The creations are then displayed in Smith Hall and they serve to inform people about the many endangered plants and animals around the world. Spring Concerts & All-School Art Show: A wealth of artistic and musical talents was on display across campus this spring. The All-School Art Show, held on May 1, showcased a stunning array of paintings, drawings and sculptures from students in all three divisions. At the lower, middle and upper school concerts, families and friends were treated to vocal and instrumental performances of a variety of classic and contemporary songs.
Spring Play: BL’s upper school spring play, All in the Timing, was full of witty dialogue, erudite literary allusions and, as the title suggests, sharp comic timing. Co-directed by seniors Carson Rehfield and Will Krulak, the production was comprised of four comically surreal episodes. “Each of us has been working with Mrs. Molling since the sixth grade, spending countless afternoons and evenings working away in the Sheridan Studio,” said Rehfield. “Theater Arts at Boys’ Latin has given me the confidence to stand up for my beliefs and to express my imagination and creativity.” Maroon & White Days: An annual highlight for students in all three divisions, this year’s Maroon and White Days were full of spirited activities and friendly competitions. Whether taking part in a heated tug-of-war battle, a fierce egg toss competition or a classic dodgeball game, the boys enjoyed the tradition of winning for their teams and creating memories they will remember for years to come. Closing out a great year Springtime at Boys’ Latin is filled with proud moments, notable recognitions and heartfelt reflections. On May 18, the entire school community gathered for one final time in the Iglehart Center for Closing Convocation. A few weeks later, our lower and middle school closing exercises marked the official end to the school year. The Procession: Along with their kindergarten buddy, seniors Brandon Kagen and Ryan Hurley line up to file into the Iglehart Center for one final time to celebrate a variety of student, faculty and staff accomplishments at Closing Convocation.
Laker Buddies: First grade student Luca Cronin and second grade student Everett Bierer present the Laker Buddy Award to Chase Bailey ’18. Combined Choir: Boys from all three divisions perform as one group during Closing Convocation under the direction of middle and upper school music teacher Kathy Anderson.
Lower School Closing Exercises: The Class of 2025 files into the Iglehart for the last time as fifth graders.
Honoring Kathy Arnold: At the conclusion of lower school closing exercises, Headmaster Post takes a moment to recognize outgoing Lower School Head Kathy Arnold and wishes her well in her new role as head of lower school admissions. Upper School Bound: Following middle school closing exercises, teachers, families and friends gather outside of the middle school to congratulate members of the eighth grade class on the upcoming transition to the upper school.

STORIES BL alums go on to succeed in virtually every field and every industry. Meet a perservering vascular surgeon and a born student leader. Both have a remarkable story. Both started on Lake Avenue.

by Mac Kennedy ’76, Director of Alumni Relations & Stewardship
Drew Tierney’s first recollection of wanting to be a physician was in seventh grade. “I was absolutely fascinated by dissecting a frog in Mr. Shriver’s science class,” he remembers. “Looking at the anatomy of the frog made me think about how amazing it would be to go to medical school and study human anatomy and physiology.” For a student who was struggling academically before coming to Boys’ Latin, it was a notable transformation – and one his parents were delighted to watch. “My mother believed that I was an intelligent boy who was not performing to his potential, and she was determined to change that,” says Tierney. After looking at all of the private schools in the area, she felt Boys’ Latin stood out from the rest as a place where her son could become the best man he could be. Tierney’s mother, a medical secretary, and his dad, a machinist, never went to college. Both believed education was the way to a better life.
8/28/18 3:11 PM
CAMPUS NEWS “During my time at BL, they both worked two jobs and made tremendous sacrifices,” Tierney says. “Watching their hard work motivated me to do my best. I was never a star in the classroom or on the court, but I left Boys’ Latin with a very broad knowledge base and the confidence that I could compete with strong students at any level. More importantly, I had a goal and a powerful work ethic.”
Drew Tierney resides in Richmond with his family and is currently a member of Boys’ Latin’s Board of Visitors.
“I wanted students to feel connected to something larger than themselves, and I wanted individuals to see the power of community.”
After graduating from Boys’ Latin in 1987, Tierney headed to the University of Richmond (UR) and majored in chemistry. While at UR, he volunteered at a nearby rescue squad. After obtaining EMT and paramedic certifications, he took a break from his classes and began working as a paramedic in Richmond. “Initially, it was great. I was finally out on my own, and there was never a shortage of exciting emergencies. However, it did not take long for me to realize that I was not living up to my full potential. I knew that I needed to get back to what I started in Mr. Shriver’s science class,” he says.
“I am fortunate to do something that I love, and I owe this to my parents and to Boys' Latin.” Tierney decided to return to his coursework at Virginia Commonwealth University and graduated with honors. His next stop was The Medical College of Virginia. “Just as I had suspected, dissecting the human body was far more amazing than the frog,” Tierney says. “Surgery was a natural fit.” After graduating from medical school, Tierney completed his internship and residency in general surgery. He then conducted an additional year of research in the molecular biology of wound healing before finishing a two-year fellowship in vascular surgery. “I have been in practice for 13 years and have a very rewarding career,” Tierney says. “Some of the surgeries are routine and some are very complex or emergent. They are all challenging and interesting. I am fortunate to do something that I love, and I owe this to my parents and to Boys’ Latin.”
BLS_MagFall18_pages.indd 25
“We got support from people that I haven’t talked to since freshman year; people reached out who didn’t even know me.” Harvin said. “While I knew community was important, I didn’t know what it could do both on the macro and micro level.” Harvin received 40 plus endorsements from student organizations and set record numbers for total votes and the margin by which he won.
At BL & BU, Community is Everything by Taylor Stothoff ’11, Alumni Relations Coordinator
Harvin attests that the things he learned at Boys’ Latin continue to influence his perspective within the college setting. He says, “The work I did with Laker Corps and the Honor Board taught me how to listen empathetically and to take the necessary steps to build community.” Looking back on his time on Lake Avenue, Harvin says the thing he misses most is the school spirit, which is something he hopes to cultivate more of at Boston University and embed within the culture there.
BL alum and current Boston University (BU) senior, Devin Harvin ’15, is a very busy man these days. Harvin, a political science, history, and African-American studies major, recently ran–and won–the election for student body president at BU. He was already the co-coordinator of Brothers United, a group dedicated to creating community for males of color on the Boston University campus.
Harvin will serve as BU Student Body President for the remainder of his senior year, before graduating and taking on a new challenge. Whatever that may be, chances are Harvin will be spending it bringing people together.
“I decided to run for Student Body President because I wanted to help create an authentic community at BU,” says Harvin. “I wanted students to feel connected to something larger than themselves, and I wanted individuals to see the power of community.”
Do you have an incredible Laker Story? We'd love to hear it! Contact the Alumni Office at 410-377-5192.
During the three-week campaign, Harvin said that his vision of a stronger community was already coming to life. BOYSLATINMD.COM

Jack H. Williams Society Cumulative gifts of $25,000 or more to The Laker Fund entitle one membership in the Jack H. Williams Society. Jack Williams, a 1938 Boys’ Latin alumnus, led the effort to find the property to build Boys’ Latin School on the grounds where it is located today. A practicing attorney, Jack left his law firm in 1962 to become Boys’ Latin’s second headmaster on Lake Avenue. Donors who consistently and generously give to Boys’ Latin, as Jack Williams did, become members of this society named in his honor.

Homecoming Weekend
1977 Football Team
On May 4 and 5, Boys’ Latin celebrated Homecoming Weekend. The two-day event kicked off with a luncheon on Friday to recognize the 2018 Distinguished Alumni and 2018 Honorary Alumni as well as recipients of the Hodges Cup Award, the Jack Kerns Clearly Evident Award and the Raleigh Brent ’44 Award (see sidebar). During the luncheon, Boys’ Latin also recognized two very special milestones: the 40th anniversary of the 1977 varsity football team’s undefeated season and the 30th anniversary of the 1988 lacrosse team’s championship. Following the luncheon and two exciting home athletic events, alumni, families and friends gathered once again in the Alumni House to catch up, share stories and reminisce.
