POSTINGS As the 2017-2018 school year begins, we conclude a very busy and eventful summer here on campus. During the last week of June, Boys’ Latin hosted the 2017 International Boys’ School Coalition (IBSC) Annual Conference. More than 600 educators from 120 schools in 20 countries came to Charm City to explore what’s best for boys – sharing ideas and strategies on engaging boys in and out of the classroom. As we know, boys are naturally competitive, tend to want more structure than girls, and benefit from mentoring and close relationships as they mature into healthy and productive men. Attendees heard from thought-provoking keynote speakers and participated in more than 60 different workshops, ranging from research-based best practices to an examination of trends in boys’ education, to an exploration of the emotional health and well-being of boys and men in the fast-paced 21st century. It was an incredible honor to host this event, and the efforts of more than 60 BL faculty and staff members in all facets of program design and delivery were nothing short of spectacular. In this issue of Boys’ Latin Magazine, we will explore the same theme as the IBSC Annual Conference - Beyond Innovation: Creativity, Discovery, Engagement.

In addition to a fascinating Q&A with IBSC speakers Wes Moore, Joe Ehrmann, Alec Ross and Andrew Reiner, you’ll discover myriad ways that our faculty and students are innovating in the classroom and beyond. You’ll read about upper school students making a lasting impact on communities both near and far, with projects ranging from designing a green ship as part of the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program at a Department of Navy Laboratory to painting an outdoor mural in inner-city Baltimore through our LAUNCH program. Finally, please know much we appreciate your tremendous philanthropic support. Included in the magazine is our 2016-2017 Annual Report of Giving. In the past year, our constituents set records for their philanthropy through unprecedented giving levels in annual giving and legacy philanthropy. Your recordsetting generosity helps to ensure that the experience of our boys and our community is extraordinary. Please know how grateful we are for your unwavering commitment and support of the school that we love. All the best,

Christopher J. Post / Headmaster

For Valedictorian Matthew Kleiser, the one thing he will never forget and always miss is the BL community. “Under this very tent sits a collective community who has illustrated what true brotherhood means. This is why we are here today, why we will be able to walk up to Headmaster Post to collect our diplomas, and why at the end of the summer we will all be heading to college for our next pursuit,” said Kleiser, as he addressed classmates, faculty, staff, family and friends during the 173rd Commencement Exercises on June 3rd. Kleiser, who attended BL since the first grade, was actively involved in the life of the school

both inside and outside of the classroom. A member of Model UN and Jazz Band, founder of the Math Club and a threesport athlete, Kleiser excelled academically as well. Out of 3.5 million graduating seniors nationwide, he was one of only 161 individuals to be named a U.S. Presidential Scholar. “While our time at Boys’ Latin has been completed, we are not complete people. There is more about ourselves and the world to discover,” he continued. “A world outside of Boys’ Latin certainly is ready for its students. And its students are ready for the world around it. We have so much to look forward to as we head off to college.”

Kleiser will head to Duke University this fall, while his 77 classmates will study at colleges and universities both near and far, including Johns Hopkins University, Wake Forest University, Cal Poly, and Cornell University. As the community celebrated the accomplishments of this talented class of young men, BL offered special congratulations to the seniors who were recognized with the following awards: JAMES MAGEE, JR. with the J. Elwood Peter Memorial Award “established by Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Peter to a senior who, in the opinion of his classmates, possesses the characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct that manifest a spirit of love for and helpfulness to his fellow men as were exemplified by their son, J. Elwood Harrison Peter ‘34.” MICHAEL PETILLO with the Jack H. Williams Award for Benevolence “established in 1978 by the School in memory of Mr. Williams ‘38, beloved Headmaster 1962-78, whose concern and love for others was the paragon for the spirit of caring at Boys’ Latin.” JAMES MAGEE, JR. with the Julian and Carolyn Smith Alumni Cup Award “established 100 years ago in 1916 by the Alumni Association, dedicated in 2012 to the Smiths, awarded to a member of the senior class for leadership based on character.” ATHERTON TOWNSEND with the Senior Internship Award “presented to that senior whose project is judged to most outstanding” for his work at Odyssey School.

An Excerpt from Valedictorian Matthew Kleiser’s Remarks It’s hard to believe that I am leaving a place that I have called my second home since the first grade along with 17 others, who we at Boys’ Latin call “lifers,” and today it’s with mixed emotion that our time here will be coming to close. Former Navy Admiral William H. McRaven said, “You can’t change the world alone—you will need some help—and to truly get from your starting point to your destination takes friends, colleagues, the goodwill of strangers, and a strong coxswain to guide them.”

“ It’s this community that taught us all about why being part of a brotherhood is so critical to our school and personal success.”

Boys’ Latin is a special place. The relationships we have formed, the support from our teachers, friends, administrators, and even the upperclassmen who have preceded us has been tremendous. All you need to do is take a look around. You will see friends, colleagues, strangers, and coxswains around you under this enormous tent. The links we have formed with each other are everlasting. Our class has an invisible and unbreakable bond that connects us. It’s this community that taught us all about why being part of a brotherhood is so critical to our school and personal success. So let me take you back to the end of my Junior year to illustrate how the BL classroom cultivates the values of collaboration and teamwork. In fact, it was this very date, June 3, our last day of school. We were assigned an engineering project, a Rube Goldberg machine, to finish for Mrs. Rodriguez’s AP Physics 1 class. The Rube Goldberg, for those of you who don’t know, is a machine that performs a complex series of connected tasks that end up completing some very simple action. You may remember the game our parents used to play “Mousetrap”, Same thing… In that class, I thought I could get the project done myself. But really, I couldn’t. My ideas didn’t work. I couldn’t do this alone. It was through this project, I learned and understood the value of relying on my classmates in order for all of us to succeed. I had to rely on them for their support, we had to rely on each other. Again, “You can’t change the world alone.” And there are countless other BL illustrations similar to this that Boys’ Latin exhibits on a daily basis, such as a teacher staying after school to help a student, like in Laker Corps where the upperclassmen cross the bridge to work with the lower school students, like coaches training our athletes on weekends and late into each evening, like One Love with a community outreach goal about a noble cause. So the time has arrived for me, on behalf of the class of 2017, to thank ALL of the teachers for their encouragement, guidance, learning, and even hard work. You have installed a strong foundation within us, which supports us as we keep moving forward in our lives and careers. We must not forget, for we will always remember to maintain that invisible bond.

INSPIRING INNOVATION BL Hosts International Education Conference by Alex Barron, Upper School English Instructor

F

or four days in late June, Boys’ Latin found itself at the center of the boys’ education universe when it hosted the 2017 International Boys’ School Coalition (IBSC) Annual Conference. The IBSC is composed of boys’ schools from all over the world, and its annual conference draws guests from the U.S. and Canada, as well as such far-flung locations as New Zealand, South Africa and India. Last summer, a large contingent of BL faculty attended the 2016 conference in Vancouver, in part, to gain insight into planning this year’s event. Fast forward to one year later: more than 600 educators came to BL’s campus to attend numerous workshops on boys’ education, hear standout keynote speakers and collectively pick hundreds of crabs. Upper School Head Brian Mitchell, a member of the conference organizing committee, knew the task would require vast amounts of manpower and planning, and that a successful conference would cement BL’s already strong reputation in the eyes of the boys’ education community. In the end, he was pleased with the way BL represented itself.

“Everyone walked away from the conference feeling good about BL and all that they experienced. Our faculty was at the heart of that feeling,” Mitchell says. “I also think hosting the annual conference shows BL’s dedication and commitment to be at the forefront of the boys’ education conversation.” The purpose of the conference is to engage with colleagues from around the world and to explore common goals as boys’ educators in spite of our geographical differences. One common theme proved to be a collective desire to encourage boys to show their authentic selves, to embrace their emotions rather than keeping them repressed. It was an idea that came up in workshops and most notably, in several of the keynote speeches throughout the four days For Middle School Head Brandon Mollett, the words of Wes Moore had particular resonance. Moore is a Baltimore native best known for his memoir The Other Wes Moore, which details his path from growing up in the inner city to attending Oxford as a Rhodes BOYSLATINMD.COM

Scholar. He spoke about the opportunity for boys’ educators to guide young men toward becoming leaders and not just passive ‘players of the game’. “Some of the boys we teach will be the game changers,” says Mollett, “Our young men will be entering a big, fast moving and global work environment. We need to educate our young men in a way that provides for them the vision, adaptability and resiliency to flex with a changing world. We need to help them to understand that the value they add to the greater good is equal to if not more important than the ‘success’ they achieve.” In another keynote address, Joe Ehrmann, the former Baltimore Colt turned motivational speaker, echoed Moore by rejecting stereotypically masculine markers of success, like athletic achievement and financial earning, in favor of basic compassion. Ehrmann, who previously spoke to BL students and faculty on One Laker | One Love Day two years ago, avowed that his goal is to “transform the current winat-all-costs mindset” by ending what he refers to as the “hyper-masculine narrative” that boys are often fed. On Monday, the conference venue shifted from Lake Avenue to the Johns Hopkins campus, where attendees were addressed by the university’s president Ron Daniels and by writer and creative consultant Courtney Ferrell. For Lower School Librarian and conference planner Terri Floccare, Ferrell’s message – delivered with vivid enthusiasm – was “refreshing and energizing.”

“It sticks with me that I should never forget to bring the unconventional and fun into my classroom,” Floccare says. A wealth of positive feedback from visitors left BL faculty members with a deep feeling of pride for both their school and for their home city. Each day concluded with its own uniquely Baltimorean social event: an on-campus crab feast on Sunday, dinner and a reception at the Aquarium on Monday and optional dinners with BL faculty members at local restaurants on Tuesday. Administrative assistant Robin Smith, who was instrumental in the planning process, relished the opportunity to highlight both the campus and Charm City, and “to give visitors a mini view of what goes on here at BL every day.” And, she remarked, it didn’t hurt that “the ‘weather gods’ gave us a gorgeous week!” Several BL teachers—Debi Krulak, Rudy Hurley, Stephanie McKew, Diane Rodriguez, Molly Mullally and Rebecca Giordano Dreisbach—took on starring roles at the conference by presenting research and workshops. Each presenter demonstrated her own unique approach to boys’ learning. One of the highlights was “15 Phun Physics Activities in 60 Minutes,” in which Rodriguez, who teaches upper school science, led attendees in several engaging lab experiments that required only simple household items. Upper School Science Teacher Jeff Hindes also played a big role behind the scenes: he oversaw the IBSC Student Forum, a program for boys’ school students from

participating schools, which ran parallel to the main conference. In order to study the many issues that community leaders must consider, the students in the conference, including BL senior Cole Jarrett (see sidebar), visited nearby attractions and met with local leaders. With the conference now in the rearview mirror, the planners can take a deep breath – while possibly anticipating next summer’s session in Australia’s Gold Coast. The conversation generated by the conference will extend well into the school year as faculty members apply what they’ve learned to their instruction and communication with students. For college counselor Cathy Badmington, the conference prompted reflections on student leadership. “I want to continue to push the idea of what leadership is, and to give the students viable leadership opportunities to get things done,” she says. After four days of illuminating conversation with educators from around the world, Lower School administrator Greg Schnitzlein recognizes that students, as well as teachers, can profit when they are drawn outside of their comfort zone. “In order to remain innovative, teachers and students cannot work in isolation,” says Schnitzlein. “Our students must have experiences that ensure they are connected to our local community and greater world.” While the conference allowed faculty to glean ideas from colleagues, it also presented an opportunity for the school to celebrate what it already does well. For Mitchell, the experience was an affirmation of BL’s success in adhering to its mission. “We are doing great work at BL with our approach to the boys and the community,” he says. “We need to continue with our approach that focuses on each boy being their best and a community that exhibits true excellence in all that we do.”

My IBSC Experience The 2017 Student Forum by Cole Jarrett ‘18

In the couple of days leading up to the IBSC conference, I felt a little discouraged because I would not be flying to some unknown territory waiting to experience something completely new. My drive to Towson University, where the students and mentors stayed, was a 20-minute trip, while for others, it was a 20-hour trip. I feared I would just be the local kid who knew his way almost too well around Baltimore, only going through the motions for the whole week. It took me less than an hour to realize I was wrong. Even though I am from Baltimore, I felt just as foreign as everyone else. Never in my life have I been exposed to so many different nationalities, different backgrounds and different perspectives. There was constantly something to talk about with every person I met. I practically became obsessed with interacting with the other participants and mentors, hearing their stories and comparing their interests with mine. While listening to some of the Australians talk about a sport I’ve never even heard of, I do not know whether I was more confused or more shocked by how little I knew. My favorite topics of discussion were music and language. I found the different tastes in music extremely interesting, as well as the entertaining accents and diction. Watching others experience new things that were familiar to me was refreshing. When we went to Washington D.C., many participants had never tasted a cheesesteak before, which I still cannot believe. Later that day, I saw three kids pull their phones out to videotape what looked like a tree and grass. I walked closer to them to figure out that they were recording a squirrel! When I asked them why they were recording, it occurred to me that they had never seen a squirrel before. I almost felt bad for laughing so hard. Each day, we returned to Towson University and the mentors would have us discuss the topic of community. We wrestled with the definition of community and ultimately, we made action plans to affect one of our communities. As I was developing my idea to improve a community in Baltimore, I had to consider the complexity of change as well as figure out how to expose myself to different viewpoints. Hearing everyone’s action plan presentations on the final day of the conference really captured my attention. The culmination of perspectives I heard will ultimately help me tackle my goal. While it was definitely a little bittersweet saying goodbye to everyone at the end of the conference, the week was very enriching and something that will always stick with me. BOYSLATINMD.COM

Q&A with IBSC Keynote Speakers Here’s what some of Baltimore’s most innovative leaders are saying about boys’ education today

Andrew Reiner Lecturer at Towson University and contributor to The New York Times and The Washington Post Magazine What strategies do today’s educators need to employ so boys can thrive both academically and emotionally?

Wes Moore Decorated U.S. Army Combat Veteran, Youth Advocate and Author of New York Times Bestselling Books: The Other Wes Moore and The Work What can parents and teachers do to teach boys to be more empathetic? We need to really love one another, and care about the challenges that one another are facing. Not only that, but it is also the shape of love that matters. It’s not enough for it to be sympathetic love, to think “I understand your pain.” Loving empathetically means knowing, “your pain is my pain.” It’s not enough for teachers and parents to teach boys that, we have to show boys that.

At IBSC, you shared your personal story, including how you were able to overcome adversity through education and embrace personal responsibility. What is one thing you hope others can learn from your experience? One of the things I hope people take away from my story is how complex and fragile success is. I was able to overcome the adversity I faced mostly not because of my own brilliance or work, but because my mother poured her heart into my success, and because I got very, very lucky at several distinct points. I hope people hear my story and understand the differences between success and failure are more delicate than we may think, and small things can make a big difference for someone living in a state of disadvantage.

BL MAGAZINE / FALL 2017

If educators really want to challenge young men and want to do right by them in terms of pushing them toward their potential as scholars and as people, then the onus falls on us to model the chops young men need. It means many of us have to roll up our sleeves and get dirty, too. Because, let’s be real – for a lot of reasons many of our students aren’t getting this skill set anywhere else. The tool kit I’m talking about is the one that’s essential in this global economy: empathy, emotional intelligence, flexibility, collaboration and good communication skills. Guys can no longer afford to dismiss these as ‘feminine’ qualities if they want to keep pace. We do our male students no favors by letting them perpetuate this old, rigid masculine narrative that no longer serves them – or us – academically or in loving relationships. Helping our male students make this transition doesn’t have to make us uncomfortable or rattle us. We can do this in small ways that feel safe and doable for us. For example, we can get boys to stop focusing on the binary need to ‘be right’ in their learning process by having them focus less on answers and more on the value of thoughtful questions. In a subtle way, this encourages intellectual curiosity, ambiguity and creative problem solving. It also opens the door to intellectual risk taking. Also, we can get boys to become better listeners (a skill that will help them beyond the classroom), and more empathetic, by mirroring, or repeating back, what they heard other students say during lively discussions or debates. Both of these exercises can affect nuanced, positive shifts. Obviously, there are many ways to help boys learn the skills they need to thrive both in and out of the classroom. This is just a small sampling.

“ You can’t export what you haven’t imported. Self-understanding is critical to understanding others.”

Joe Ehrmann Former NFL player, co-founder of NFL Foundation-funded InSideOut Initiative and author of InSideOut Coaching: How Sports Can Transform Lives In your experience, what are some of the ways you have seen sports transform the lives of young men? The power and privilege of coaching is to have a context to look young men in the eye and affirm their inherent value, worth and human potential regardless of their athletic ability. A boy’s masculinity is often judged by himself, peers or adults based on a belief that masculinity is defined by athletic prowess. To teach young men that sports are not an arena to prove their masculinity has transformative power. Every man that self-actualizes is because he had someone affirm and validate his authentic self apart from masculine societal norms. This allows them to throw off the emotional and cultural straitjacket our society attempts to clothe every boy in. And the beauty of team sports is that it is done in community and this allows boys to enter into relationships with other boys, showing up in authentic self, valued and appreciated as part of the team and school.

What advice do you have for coaches who want to make a positive and lasting impact on boys? To be a better coach you have to be a better you. The purpose of interscholastic sports is to connect students to caring adults in their learning community to help advance their human growth and moral development. This demands coaches have their own game plan for their growth and development. You can’t export what you have not imported. Self-understanding is critical to understanding others.

Alec Ross Distinguished Senior Fellow at Johns Hopkins University and author of the New York Times bestseller The Industries of the Future During your presentation, you explored the technological and scientific developments that will shape the next 10 years. How can we best prepare boys for a successful future in careers that may not even exist yet? The World Economic Forum published a study estimating that for children entering kindergarten today, by the time they leave college two-thirds of the jobs that will exist are job types that don’t even exist today. Given that we are therefore not preparing our young people for specific jobs, what we have to do is ensure that they have skills that work across the industries of the future as well as the willingness and ability to be lifelong learners and have careers that doubtless will be more prone to change and mobility than is the case today. We need to ensure that our boys get strong interdisciplinary studies. I believe that it’s not just enough to have an understanding of things technical, but in a world with machines growing more powerful, that which makes us most human grows more important. I believe it is people who combine and demand expertise or are strong in an understanding of things that are technical in science and technology, with things that we associate with humanities who will be best equipped to lead in tomorrow’s world. I think that emotional intelligence and understanding of behavioral psychology and strong communications abilities are more important than ever. The interdisciplinary learner and a lifelong learner is what we need to be trying to instill in our students.

Face it: Boys learn differently than girls, and that’s OK by Christopher J. Post, Headmaster

International studies have long shown that the achievement of girls outpaces boys in English, reading and language performance. The achievement of girls also now surpasses boys in science and math, according to a University of Missouri study. Boys do outpace their female counterparts in some areas, however. For instance, boys are far more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. They’re also far more likely to be disciplined, to serve detentions or suspensions, and to be expelled from schools. Why is this the case? Traditionally, schools fail to recognize the conditions that account for and exacerbate the achievement gap between girls and boys, thus impeding the full development of boys’ intellectual and emotional potential. Consequently, we are producing a whole generation of disengaged boys — boys who lack a robust interior life — who are unwilling or unable to grapple with the full dimension of emotional connectedness. More than 600 educators from all over the world assembled here in Baltimore for the annual conference of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition to understand what’s best for boys — how we can create environments in which boys can flourish, pushing beyond innovation and inspiring creativity, discovery and engagement. One of the most eagerly-anticipated speakers was former Baltimore Colts lineman Joe Ehrmann, who after his Pro Bowl career went on to be a pastor, motivational speaker, coach at Gilman School and powerful advocate for improving the way boys are raised. Mr. Ehrmann likes to say that the three most dangerous words to say to a boy are: “Be a man”. Throughout our culture — and across time — masculinity’s highest accolades have been celebrations of violent strength. Too often, masculinity is associated with an absence of emotional connectedness. Too often, masculinity applauds the wearing of a mask — a social facade — instead of cherishing the formation of deep personal relationships. 14

BL MAGAZINE / FALL 2017

In short, society has come to encourage, if not expect, that boys will grow to be men devoid of emotional depth, men who are merely hollow shells of themselves. But it doesn’t have to be this way. As headmaster of one of our nation’s oldest all-boys schools, I’ve seen firsthand how we as educators can do this better. I’ve seen how we can promote better academic performance among boys while supporting their whole growth as persons. Doing so starts with acknowledging a simple fact: Boys learn differently than girls. They just do. It’s something we should embrace, not shy away from. At schools like mine, we embrace boys and their unique strengths by: Creating a sense of agency in their lives. Boys must come to see learning and the acquisition of knowledge as the ultimate path to personal empowerment and the best way to ensure they can control and shape their futures. Emphasizing context and practical applications. Boys appreciate seeing application of information to their lives. Boys want to know the “whys” behind lessons, not just the “hows”. Recognizing competition as a source of strength. Boys are innately competitive, and there’s no better way to teach about the values of humility, respect and teamwork. Teaching these valuable life lessons, we can ensure that our boys are ready for the collaboration and connectedness of the 21st century. Seeking out opportunities to connect action to empathy and altruism. By helping boys adopt a broader view of manhood, expanding the definition of masculinity to one that ennobles duty and service to others, we can help boys to lead more fulfilling personal and professional lives.

“ By helping boys adopt a broader view of manhood, expanding the definition of masculinity to one that ennobles duty and service to others, we can help boys to lead more fulfilling personal and professional lives.”

Based on my 25 years of experience as an educator, I firmly believe these are pillars upon which to raise high-performing, emotionally-engaged young men. And I believe that an all-boys approach is the best way to ensure that this occurs. Single-sex education has long shown to benefit both young women and young men. The emergence of Baltimore charter schools like Lillie May Carroll Jackson School (for girls) and Baltimore Collegiate School (for boys) speaks to the power of this work and the transformational impact it can have in the Baltimore community. Perhaps it’s time to consider adopting it more widely. Reprinted from The Baltimore Sun.

Going Beyond College Prep Upper school LAUNCH program enriches curriculum, sharpens critical thinking skills and encourages meaningful collaboration at BL and throughout the surrounding community. by Cathi Hilpert, Communications Coordinator

Courage Track teacher Ann Gazin facilitates discussion

As Walker Santos dives into his freshman year at Virginia Tech this fall, he feels well prepared for the challenges that lie ahead, thanks in large part to LAUNCH. “LAUNCH was probably the best and most useful class I took at BL,” says Santos, who graduated in June. “When you have academic classes, they prepare you for college but you’re not always prepared for times in your life when you’re going to need to step up. LAUNCH taught me how to do that.” Grounded in the mission of instilling the core values of courage, integrity and compassion in each boy as embodied in the school motto, Esse Quam Videri (to be, rather than to seem), LAUNCH helps guide juniors and seniors toward a greater understanding of themselves and their ability to impact a dynamic, ever-changing world. The two-year course explores six core concepts: problemsolving, intellectual risk taking, empathy, self-awareness, collaboration and reflection. The course teaches each concept in five different tracks that reflect 21st century qualities that are essential for success in college and beyond. The tracks – courage, leadership, compassion, innovation and expression – approach the six core concepts from a unique perspective and afford students the opportunity to pursue their interests in a way that’s rigorous, creative and multidimensional. Each track consists of four semester-long courses, each designed to inspire students to find their own passion and voice. “As a math teacher, I often hear students ask ‘when am I ever going to use this?’ but I never hear that with LAUNCH. It’s really obvious that we’re making them better people

and that they will use these skills,” says Jimmy Morrissey, who teaches the Leadership Track with Upper School English Teacher and Twelfth Grade Dean Beau Dagenais. “LAUNCH gives me a very clear and easy way to work with guys on things they will always need: leadership and an ability to express themselves.”

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH Now in its third year, LAUNCH is making its mark as a distinctive program that allows BL students to have an academic experience that more closely mirrors many of the classes being taught at the college level where there’s a significant focus on skills like collaboration. “The trickle down from ‘real world’ jobs to colleges and now to high schools is the idea of collaboration, which is a significant part of the LAUNCH classes,” says Cathy Badmington, Director of College Counseling at BL. “When we tell college representatives about this program, they definitely perk up. It’s always a good thing when a college representative can look at a transcript that alerts them that our school is being thoughtful and intentional about our teaching.” During the first two years the course was offered, Upper School Head Brian Mitchell has seen tremendous value in carving out space and time to talk about topics and big picture issues that aren’t a part of the five core subjects. “We are giving boys the opportunity to explore topics that don’t fit in the traditional educational experience,” says Mitchell. “We are also giving them the chance to engage with our internal and external community in a way that hasn’t ever happened before.”

“As a math teacher, I often hear students ask ‘when am I ever going to use this?’ but I never hear that with LAUNCH. It’s really obvious that we’re making them better people and that they will use these skills.”

LAUNCH WORKS. HERE’S WHY: ENERGIZING TEACHERS LAUNCH not only benefits students, but it energizes the faculty as well. “There’s been a spark from faculty as they engage with one another – and with the boys – this way,” observes Mitchell. Upper School English Teacher Al Freihofer agrees. “As a teacher, what I love about LAUNCH is how flexible and responsive we can be based on current events in Baltimore, nationally or the world,” says Freihofer, who teaches the Expression Track with fellow English teacher Matt LaFreniere. “We’ve also created a climate where faculty and students can respectfully disagree. It gives us a chance to model civility and develop the discussion skills that create good citizens.”

MAKING AN IMPACT All LAUNCH tracks end with a culminating project where students—guided by their faculty leaders—create and

Interdisciplinary learning closely resembles the world students will be experiencing in college and beyond.

BL’s mission has three central core values— Courage, Compassion, and Integrity. All of the LAUNCH tracks focus on teaching skills and content that align with our Mission Statement.

Colleges and universities are looking for engaged learners who can make connections between different subject matters.

execute a substantial project that empowers them to connect their Boys’ Latin education with the broader community. Recent graduates Jake Glatz, Jake Schneider, Luke Schilling and Ethan Norman developed their project around a series of teaching, mentoring and tutoring sessions at Waverly Middle School in Baltimore. While the time they spent at Waverly helped to brighten days for the kids attending school there, it also helped each BL student better express who they are and who they want to be. Meanwhile, J.P. Woodward and Bennett Gaines coordinated the creation of a mural in an inner city neighborhood (see next page) while fellow classmates Max Kantz, Gideon Endalkachew, Griffin McShane and Garrett Voigt hosted a dance in honor of fighting childhood cancer. “I’m thrilled at the prospects for next year’s projects,” says Freihofer.

Connecting with Baltimore’s Past, Present and Future A Wall of Opportunity After spending two years in the Courage Track of LAUNCH, Bennett Gaines was ready to step out of his comfort zone. For his culminating project, Gaines wanted to make a permanent impact on the community and he had the perfect way to do it: an outdoor mural that would bring happiness, joy and hope to an inner-city Baltimore neighborhood. As LAUNCH projects go, a mural of this size was ambitious to say the least. His first step was to recruit fellow senior and Leadership Track student J.P. Woodward to help execute his vision. Together, the pair would need to secure approvals and funding, identify an artist and complete the project from start to finish – all while juggling the typical responsibilities of senior year, like studying for AP tests, going to baseball practice and preparing for graduation. In the beginning, the duo focused their efforts on finding an artist. They quickly settled on Juansebastian Serrano, an alumnus of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). With Serrano’s help, Gaines and Woodward came up with an initial design and began visualizing where they wanted the mural to go. After exploring a few options, the pair headed to the Ark Church on E. North Avenue to discuss the possibility of painting the mural there. During an initial meeting with Lady Cora Carter, the church business administrator, Gaines and Woodward shared their vision and a showed her a prototype of the mural design.

“She loved it,” says Gaines, as did Bishop J.L. Carter, who has served as chief servant of Ark Church since 1987. After seeing the initial design, he described the mural as a blessing to the community. “It’s just tremendous as it gives hope and creates new excitement in the community,” Carter says. “Doves are biblical. They speak of peace. They speak of hope. And, they speak of unlimited possibilities.”

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES

Artist Juansebastian Serrano puts finishing touches on the mural

With the mural design and location confirmed, there was one major hurdle still left to overcome: funding. Gaines and Woodward needed money to cover supplies. After spending a little time networking, the two submitted a grant proposal that was eventually approved. “It was shocking and overwhelming at the same time,” says Gaines as he reflects on the moment when he found out they secured $900– enough to fund the entire project. Over a three-week period this spring, Gaines and Woodward took turns working with Serrano at the church site to complete the mural. When the painting was finally finished, the feedback from the local community was overwhelmingly positive. “Everyone said awesome things to us,” says Gaines. “It made us feel right about our decision to create the mural.” And, while the goal for these two seniors was to bring something inspiring to a struggling community, they actually took away a great deal from the project themselves. “I learned that if you surround yourself with talented people, you can do anything,” says Gaines, who notes that the project initially seemed impossible to someone who’s not artistically inclined. He also discovered the potential of the medium firsthand. “Art really is a universal language. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you are – you can bring happiness and joy into people’s lives,” Gaines says. Woodward agrees. “A slight difference in perspective can really change your whole mindset,” says Woodward. “I never really thought much about the meaning of art, but now my whole perspective has changed. I see now how powerful it can be.”

BRINGING TOGETHER PAST & PRESENT

During the initial meeting with Mrs. Carter, both boys were amazed to learn of her special connection to BL that dates back to her childhood. As a child, her brother attended Boys’ Latin and she attended The Bryn Mawr School. The siblings lived with their grandmother in Baltimore. During the riots of 1968, Jack Williams – the BL Headmaster at the time – personally drove Mrs. Carter and her brother to live with his family in the Homeland neighborhood of North Baltimore until downtown was free from violence. Further, Williams negotiated with the Black Panthers, who were headquartered directly across the street from their grandmother’s house, to keep her safe.

Senior Jack Lange has been boating since he was little and has always loved the water. But he never knew until recently just how far his passion could take him. Jack spent most of his summer working for the Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP), a prestigious internship that allows teenagers to work in real-world environments that require a high level of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skill. During a tour of the Carderock Division of the Naval Surface Warfare Center last spring, Jack spoke with several naval architects who encouraged him to apply for a highly selective SEAP internship. A few months later, after a rigorous application process, Jack learned that he had been selected to the program, along with fewer than 300 other students from around the country.

BL MAGAZINE / FALL 2017

While interns are sent to locations all around the country, Jack was assigned to the very center he had toured: Carderock, located just outside Bethesda, Maryland. Carderock is well known as a site for the design and testing of naval ships, but Jack’s mission had more to do with environmentalism than warfare. Jack’s team set its sights on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, essentially a massive pile of debris floating in the ocean. The team’s goal was to design and build a vessel that would aid in the clean-up effort. A project of this magnitude obviously requires substantial planning: Jack and his teammates had to calculate the ship’s stability, power requirements and hydrodynamics, before using a 3-D printer to create a prototype. Luckily, they were aided in their efforts by several naval architects and marine engineers, who acted as mentors to students in SEAP.

Junior Appointed to City Commission by Cathi Hilpert

Because the project was connected to the efforts of the U.S. Navy, many of its details were confidential. In fact, Jack and his teammates needed to obtain temporary security clearance in order to participate. Because of the sensitive nature of the project, photography was also strictly prohibited. As a result, Jack has no pictures of himself in action. Instead of pictures, Jack has a notebook full of sketches and complicated calculations – a sort of scrapbook of his time at Carderock. “Filling dozens of pages with designs and calculations is very satisfying to me because I am actually following my dream to become a naval architect,” says Jack, “And I can see it coming true with the numbers and lines I’m filling my notebook with.” Following his impending graduation from BL, Jack hopes to continue the marine lifestyle as he studies to be a naval architect at a maritime service academy. “My experience this summer is hopefully the beginning of my career on the ocean,” he says.

When Theo LaBonte-Clark was sworn in as a member of the Baltimore City Youth Commission this summer, it was the culmination of many months of hard work and diligent preparation. LaBonte-Clark, a BL junior and lifelong Baltimorean, first learned about the commission in the eighth grade. To achieve his goal of being appointed one day, he grew his knowledge of the local political climate and got more involved in his community, taking on roles as a senior patrol leader in his Boy Scout troop and as a coach at his neighborhood pool. “Getting kids involved in politics and in the commission is one of the best ways to ensure our generation is well educated about their surroundings,” says LaBonte-Clark. “It creates a platform to talk about issues and a space where they can find solutions to the problems they see in everyday life.” The commission gives youth from each of the city’s 14 council districts the opportunity to provide Mayor Catherine Pugh, the City Council and municipal agencies with recommendations on policies and programs that support children, youth and their families. Youth commissioners must be residents of Baltimore City and participate in a summer leadership institute. The commission meets six to 10 times a year over the course of the four-year term. Seeing class divisions and how they impact the city is what ultimately drove LaBonte-Clark to participate. “I live in an upper middle-class neighborhood surrounded by parks and a lake, but you can see a split in between [our neighborhood and the one next to it] with just about 10 yards separating the two. I want to help connect communities in Baltimore.”

In St. Louis, BL finished 32nd of 68 teams, representing the school with great pride and enthusiasm. The trip was the team’s third World Championship appearance in the past 10 years. The BL team previously competed in 2010 and 2015 competitions. About 25 upper school students participate in BL’s robotics program, involved in everything from design and programming, to construction of the robot and using data analytics to scout other teams. The team had just six weeks to design, program and build its robot and spent as much as eight hours a day in the lab, seven days a week, working to refine and perfect the robot’s maneuvers. “It’s a significant commitment—we work most weekdays until seven or eight o’clock, but being able to look at the robot after six weeks—and a significant amount of caffeine —makes it all worth it” says Post, who has been involved in robotics at BL since the fourth grade and has been hooked ever since.

Robotics Team Returns to World Championships by Cathi Hilpert

When Matt Post ’18 traveled to St. Louis in April to compete as part of the Lumberjack Robotics Team in the FIRST World Championship, it was his second time representing BL on the world stage. “It’s really great to be a part of something so special. I’ve gotten to meet and interact with kids from across the globe,” Post says. Best described as part science and part sport, robotics has proved to be a winning combination for Post and for BL. “The robotics program creates challenging opportunities where STEM and competition join hips in an exciting and challenging manner. Through robotics, our boys gain first-hand experience solving and competing in complex engineering challenges on the local, regional, and world level,” says Anne Kellerman, head robotics coach at BL. 24

BL MAGAZINE / FALL 2017

Post went from being part of the first Lego Robotics Club in the BL lower school to a member of the BL middle school Team to logging three years with the Lumberjacks. As a member of the Lumberjack’s build team, he works on the mechanical aspects of the robot and makes sure everything functions as it should. He also collaborates with the programming team to “make the magic happen” and says his favorite tool in the robotics lab is a blowtorch, which he uses to mold and blend plastics. “I could not be more proud to work with the talented and dedicated students and mentors on the team,” says Kellerman. “Their commitment to excellence and to each other’s growth and success is palpable.” While winning one more district event and competing in another world championships are both significant accomplishments, Kellerman is most proud to see the seniors on last year’s team head to top colleges and universities to study engineering, including Virginia Tech, Case Western, Georgia Tech, Cornell and Vanderbilt. “The senior leadership of captains Ryan Trupia, Noah Vilceus, Josiah Bedford, Trey Burrell and Alex Young was evident on and off the field,” Kellerman added. “They have spent hundreds if not a few thousand hours over the past four years developing techniques and practices for programming, designing, strategy and scouting and leave the team in a great place to continue to excel in future seasons.” And that’s something the underclassmen on the team anticipate with great excitement. “I look forward to being one of the seniors on the team this year and hope we will be able to achieve even more on the world stage,” Post says.
