STRATEGIC RATEGIC PLAN
2013
THE BOYS’ LATIN SCHOOL OF MARYLAND
Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends, I am pleased to share with you our new Strategic Plan. Over the past year, the Board of Trustees, together with our faculty and staff, has engaged in purposeful and systematic planning processes. We completed the self-study and visit portion of the Association of Independent Maryland Schools re-accreditation cycle this past spring, and we are nearing the conclusion of the action plan phase. This process focuses largely on the School’s programmatic initiatives. Simultaneously, the Board approved a new Strategic Plan which will guide our institutional progress over the next several years. The plan incorporates a great deal of research and benchmarking, reflection and discussion, and thoughtful prioritization of the needs of our boys and of our community as a whole. Involving hundreds of students and parents, faculty and staff, alumni, friends and Trustees, this process has been rich and rewarding. As a preface to the Strategic Plan, a new statement of institutional identity boldly and succinctly articulates our values and beliefs. Constituents from across our community reviewed the existing mission statement and provided input and feedback. The mission statement points clearly to our core values of courage, integrity and compassion, which emanate from our motto Esse Quam Videri. Moreover, our mission claims our place as a boys’ school that builds enduring, personal relationships and empowers each student to strive to be his very best. As you will see on the pages that follow, the mission is the cornerstone of our Strategic Plan. Together with our dedicated Trustees, our talented faculty and staff lead our efforts to be a national leader in boys’ education. I am grateful to the many community members who contributed their time, vision, and care to this process. We are excited about our future and the on-going strengthening of our school. Most of all, we will continue to strive to inspire our boys to grow as young men who embody our core values and live out our motto, each and every day. Sincerely yours,
Christopher J. Post Headmaster

HISTORY & IDENTITY
Founded in 1844 by Dr. Evert Marsh Topping, a Princeton classics professor, Boys’ Latin is the oldest independent, nonsectarian college preparatory school for boys in Maryland. Boys’ Latin is committed to being a small school, serving boys in grades K – 12. Each student is uniquely known and cherished for who he is and is encouraged to grow to be his best, authentic self. Boys’ Latin inspires the best in every boy.
PHILOSOPHY & PURPOSE
Boys’ Latin offers a rich and rigorous academic and co-curricular program that prepares young men for the opportunities of the 21st century. The School welcomes students from diverse backgrounds and educates them in a supportive, student-centered environment. Trained in the best practices in boys’ education, faculty members craft innovative programs that reflect their expertise in how boys learn and provide students with unparalleled opportunities to stretch and grow. A low student-teacher ratio enables our talented faculty to challenge each student to reach his maximum potential while encouraging him to mature with an increasing sense of self-worth and an awareness of his responsibilities toward himself and his local and global community.
“We will support each other as alumni, and as brothers, in the future. We will ensure each others’ success through advice, through companionship and through mutual guidance, because Boys’ Latin is a brotherhood.” -Spencer Stieff ‘13 - Valedictorian University of Virginia, Class of 2017

STRATEGIC PLAN — GOAL AREA AND STRATEGIES
BRANDING, MARKETING AND ENROLLMENT MANAGEMENT As the only school in Maryland with an exclusively all boys experience, grades K – 12, Boys’ Latin understands how boys learn and trains faculty to best meet the individual needs of each student. In telling the Boys’ Latin story, we will clearly communicate our success in how each boy grows as a leader, life-long learner, teammate, and friend. In so doing, the School will continue to: • Enhance and target internal and external communications so that Boys’ Latin is recognized as a national leader in boys’ education. • Attract and enroll a diverse and talented student population. • Focus efforts on maintaining high levels of student retention.
David Goodman, Class of 2011 Yale Class of 2015 David shared “a few thoughts on my first few weeks at college.... I was a little nervous as I walked onto the Yale campus as a freshman. After all, I now found myself competing with the 1,352 students from all over the world that comprise Yale’s class of 2015 as compared to the 71 friends that made up BL’s class of 2011. But I quickly discovered that the Boys’ Latin faculty had prepared me for anything that I would face, providing me with the tools and the self confidence to succeed on this new frontier. In particular, as a math and economics major, Ms. Mullally prepared me to step into an upper level multivariate calculus course seamlessly. It is teachers like Ms. Mullally that not only pushed me to be the best that I can be, but have inspired a love of learning that will help me succeed in college and in life.”

FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY Ever-mindful of stewarding our resources for the best interests of Boys’ Latin, we are responsive to the demands of a dynamic marketplace. The School will guarantee the long term financial sustainability of the institution in the following ways: • Develop a sustainable, long-term financial plan. • Aggressively increase the endowment. • Evaluate the short-term and long-term capital needs of the School and raise necessary funds.
