Winter Fashion

battling for pole position. As well as the shimmery metal trend, there is also the continuing exploration of clashing prints. This works by finding tones of the same colour within different prints, such as geometric, digital, animal, paisley, floral, plaid and polka dot. Try mixing a small design with a larger print or for a clever slimming effect wear a smaller print on the largest part of your body. For boyish figures, opt for larger prints juxtaposed against other prints to give the allusion of curves. Sheer shirts worn with harem pants, blazers with dresses, silk tops with pencil skirts – the eclectic print ‘matching’ creates confident looks. If there is a must-buy this season it has to be the pencil skirt. With its high waist and below the knee length, a pencil skirt can be worn by all shapes and sizes. Metallic, lace, leather, print… just team with a pair of skinny heels and a tucked in white shirt or sheer top. Other skirts also big this winter will include adorable A-line minis, pleated and dirndl. More big news this season is leather, fur and lace. Leather was big on the autumn runways and is always a staple look for winter. This time round, try layering with leather and experiment with shift dresses, shorts, tank tops, skirts, pants and jackets. Lace and faux fur add further textural interest to dresses and outfits and the fur is perfect for extra cosiness on a wintery day. Look out for faux fur scarves and boleros. When it comes to colour, indulge in jewellery box tones, such as deep reds and greens, intense blues and purples. Plus, rather than whole-outfit colour blocking, use a handbag to add a pop of colour, such as a vermillion handbag against a cobalt blue dress, or a jade green bag against nude or camel. It’s a statement winter this year so take your pick from the precious metals, indulgent accessories, divine textures and vibrant prints and enjoy creating unique fashion contradictions!

Making a statement!

There is going to be plenty of sparkle and shine walking the streets this winter as a luxurious metallic trend takes off. Gold, silver, bronze and pewter may all sound a little ‘rock star’ but with the bold yet simple cuts, pieces for this season have a magical and confident edge. For dresses, metallic fabric is going to be huge with large sequins, beading and chain fringing all featured strongly. Watch out for 1920’s flapper-style dresses with art deco patterns and dropped waists. Or modern architectural dresses with pleats, tailored lines or angles that showcase the opulence of the fabric. For those not brave enough to attempt the whole metallic look, try adding accents of gold with drop earrings and gilded ballet flats. Keep hair and makeup simple when wearing the metal trend to look edgy rather than too predictably polished or blingy. This winter is also all about mix with several trends 10

The

Greta #4 Diaries Excitement equals new shoes. I live by this motto, as my shoe cupboard attests. But excitement also equals new shoes that are ethical. Great for your looks, great for your feet, great for the earth. And here are a couple of my new faves:-

ARCHE: ooh la laa, the French do it again!

6.

Comfort goes chateau-chic with these beauties. The skinny? The soles are 100% natural, made from milking a tree called the Hevea tree. It’s a gift of nature that nurtures the tree. And it gives you millions of air holes of cushiony air with every step.

PIKOLINOS: They got me with their vegetable tanning and non-poisonous glues. Add to that milk (yes milk!!) proteins that keep the leathers soft, waterproof and breathable (so your feet don’t sweat), and you’ll have happy feet with this gorgeous Spanish brand.

7.

LOINTS OF HOLLAND: Of course, you would expect a brilliant product from the Dutch! Handmade (over 200 production steps in each pair, wow!) to save on energy, no lining to save on leathers (read cows) and no big bad chemicals used in any part. Groove to the moo ... So I know how I can do my bit to look fabulous AND help make planet earth look equally as good.

Jewellery Yallingup wall project

a real gem!

John Miller likes to collect rocks! From one milligram diamonds to ten ton boulders, he just can’t resist them! “It all started when I was pretty young,” sighs the Yallingup jeweller. “My sister was Flying Nurse Robin Miller working for the Flying Doctor all over outback WA. She had a thing for collecting rocky desert delights and she used to share some of her collection with me. So, from about age five, I had the mineral bug.” This bug has also been somewhat exacerbated by embarking on a forty year career as one of the state’s more creative jewellers! And meanwhile, from the Pyrenees to Pilbara creek beds and from the Himalayas to the Great Sandy Desert, John kept on picking up pieces of the earth’s crust. The result was things started to get just a bit rock-cluttered around his Yallingup studio. Toes were getting stubbed. Late last year, friend and local creative stonemason Todd Nelson popped in for a visit. His suggestion of, “How about we build that wall out the front?” instantly solved the clutter problem and began an ambitious project. The Yallingup wall project was born! 5 panels of mixed local stone, enhanced with polished specimens of WA jasper, chrysoprase, tiger iron, quartz crystals, agate, seashells, the list

goes on. The construction began with 60 tons of local granite monoliths, sourced from around the cape and set up with a 22 ton excavator. Then local limestone and feature granite was delivered in various selected loads and the native rock from the property, lateritic ironstone with its purple to yellow characteristics, was used for colour, contrast and texture. Also featured is blocky marble and granite off cuts from Perth-based masons, collected twenty years ago by John. To top it off the wall also features fossils, flowerpots, bottles and even a small bronze bust of Beethoven! “One could be forgiven for calling it art!” said John. “There’s more great Aussie rock in this than Acca Dacca and Cold Chisel put together! Kids love it! We’re going to do up a wall activity sheet with questions and answers, maybe even some wall merchandise,” he said. “Best of all, it’s still going to be looking good in another thousand years!” The Yallingup gem wall is located on Marrinup Drive just off Caves Road. Visiting is free and it’s already become something of a local attraction for locals and visitors alike. There’s also a great little jewellery gallery, just behind the wall. 26

Mercedes M-Class All new third generation

SUV arrives down under!

Back in 1997, the launch of the Mercedes M-Class was a major milestone in the history of the world’s leading luxury car manufacturer. As well as being the first attempt by Mercedes to break into the burgeoning worldwide SUV market, it was also the first US-built Mercedes-Benz with its manufacturing plant based in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. Fifteen years on from that ground-breaking launch, the now hugely significant SUV market is home to some serious competition, particularly from all of the other European luxury car brands. So has the all new third generation M-Class got what it takes to stay one step ahead off its rivals? Longer and wider than the outgoing model, the latest M-Class carries over many of the latest features from Benz’s sedans and coupés, including LED running lights and wide rear arches. The rear is similar in style to the new E-Class Wagon and, with its 19” alloys as standard, it is the perfect combination of style and poise. Inside, the ML is sleek and contemporary with the most obvious change being the switch from round air vents to rectangular ones and the new chunky steering wheel

flanked by new stalks for the transmission, wipers, and cruise control. Soft-touch plastics and leather and plenty of wood and chrome give the cabin a luxurious and refined feel whilst the heated front seats and spacious rear seats transport passengers in utter unbridled comfort. A generous cargo area holds 36 cubic feet with the seats up and 71 cubic feet with everything folded flat. The all new M-Class also comes with an exciting new engine line-up. The entry level M-Class is now the ML250BlueTEC fitted with a highly efficient 2.1 litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine. With a fuel economy rating of just 6.3 litres per 100km, it

28

on the road produces more power and torque than the old ML300 and accelerates to 100km/h over a second quicker. It also comes in around $4,000 cheaper than its outgoing equivalent. The second diesel engine in the line-up is the ML350BlueTEC available with a 3.0 litre V6 turbo-diesel that produces 190kW and 620Nm. With the feel of a V8 below the bonnet, it surges to 100km/h in just 7.4 seconds. The petrol options begin with the ML350BlueEFFICIENCY. This direct injection 3.5 litre V6 delivers 225kW and 370Nm of torque reaching 100km/h in a time of 7.6 seconds. From there, Mercedes offers a 4.6 litre V8 providing am impressive 300kW and a maximum torque of 600Nm and the all new AMG version with its V8 bi-turbo engine is expected later in the year. Offering a special off-road package as

standard for the Australian market (at a time when most of its competitors are reducing off-road capabilities in their cars), the new M-Class is also fitted with the newly developed double-wishbone front suspension for improved road refinement and the new Active Curve system, a decoupling anti-roll bar that disconnects in off-road situations and normal straightahead driving but reconnects during cornering.

Summary Faster with improved economy levels, more luxurious and yet more affordable, the all new M-Class seems set to continue to grow its popularity amongst Australian buyers. For further information on the Mercedes-Benz M-Class range, contact Coastal Automotive Centre on (08) 9721 8199.

Toyota Hybrids

World’s leading hybrid car manufacturer expands range!

It’s now 15 years since Toyota introduced the world to hybrid technology and the world’s largest car manufacturer is showing no signs of resting on its laurels. With over 2.5 million Prius hybrid models sold since launch, this year sees an exciting expansion of the range with the release of a facelifted Prius, all-new Prius C and Prius V and a new Camry Hybrid. So what exactly is Hybrid Synergy Drive® technology? Put simply, the aim of this technology is to produce fewer and cleaner emissions and to reduce fuel consumption. Toyota achieves this by combining the use of an efficient petrol engine and a powerful electric motor, which uses converted energy from the brakes stored in the hybrid battery. The car then switches seamlessly between the two or uses them simultaneously to deliver the best performance for any condition. Increasingly popular with government and fleet purchasers, hybrids have also struck a chord amongst the younger GEN Y market who have not only bought into the fact that this new technology is now proven and reliable but are willing to pay extra to get the fuel-saving benefits. The all new Prius C is set to make further inroads into this market as the country’s most affordable hybrid available. The

Prius C has a starting price of just $23,990. The Prius C, of course, is one of 3 Prius models in the range. The facelifted Prius, which premiered at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September, offers a number of significant upgrades from the outgoing model both externally and internally together with a new, cutting-edge multimedia system. With a revised front bumper design and an enlarged lower grille, inside the centre console design has been revised and the multiinformation display has been improved with a 16 gradation-step Vacuum Fluorescent Display (VFD) providing a clearer and more threedimensional display. The car delivers a fuel economy of 3.9ltrs per 100 km (combined cycle) and CO2 emissions of just 89g/km. The all new Prius V is a seven seater wagon pitched at both the family and the commercial market. Powered by the familiar hybrid-drive 1.8 litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine, power is rated at 73kW and 142Nm and the addition of the electric motor brings the total system output to 100kW. Equipped with a more powerful lithium-ion battery, stored under the centre console between the driver and front passenger, the combined fuel economy comes in at 5.9ltrs per 100km. 30

on the road

Camry Hybrid

Finally, the all new Toyota Camry Hybrid, also sold as a luxury version, is now available. This hybrid version of the world’s biggest selling mid-size car has been launched with a lower starting price, better fuel economy, more features and improved performance. Producing 118kW and 213Nm of torque, in addition to the 105kW and 270Nm of torque provided by the electric motor, the car achieves 0-100km/h almost a second quicker than the outgoing model at eight seconds flat. Fitted with a unique radiator grille and hybrid blue Toyota badge, the luxury model gets a

rear lip spoiler, 17 alloy wheels, reverse camera and Blind Spot Monitor, JBL audio system, satellite navigation and a leather accented trim. Style, performance and environmentally friendly engines. The future of motoring is here! For further information on the Toyota Hybrid range, contact Busselton Toyota at 78 West Street on 08 9781 0000.

Skoda Yeti The new 4x4

offering serious affordability!

First unveiled as a concept car at the 2007 Australian Motor Show, the Skoda Yeti has certainly taken a long time in coming. Since its first sightings, however, Skoda has been busy fine-tuning a finished package that offers plenty of scope for the Australian buyer. Based on the Octavia platform, a car it is expected to eventually outsell down under, and a close cousin of the Tiguan from parent company Volkswagen, this is an affordable SUV with the looks and build quality you would expect from a renowned European manufacturer.

Originally designed to be a purely front-driveonly vehicle, the production version of the Yeti comes in both front-wheel drive and fourwheel drive variants with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The entry level front wheel drive 77TSI petrol version is a turbo-charged 4 cylinder 1200cc engine capable of a top speed of over 170km/h. Offering a maximum torque of 175Nm between 1550 and 4100rpm, fuel economy levels are impressive with a combined figure of 6.6 litres per 100 km/h. Priced at under $30,000, the car offers some

32

on the road serious value for money and will undoubtedly not only prove highly competitive in the SUV market but also take sales from conventional hatchbacks and sedans. The 103kW, 320Nm 2 litre, 4 wheel drive turbo-diesel version on the other hand offers even better fuel consumption at 6.2 litres per 100 km/h and a top speed over 190 km/h. Priced around the mid-$30,000’s this will be up against many of the Korean SUVs and models, such as the Subaru Forester. An 118TSI petrol model is also expected in 2012. If the price and performance levels don’t tempt buyers, then the specification levels may well do the trick. Standard kit for the base model Yeti includes 16 inch alloy wheels, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear knob, air conditioning, an MP3-compatible single-disc CD system with eight speakers,

Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, electric windows and a trip computer. In addition to all that, the diesel gets 17 inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, a six-disc CD audio system, rain-sensing wipers and a height-adjustable passenger seat with lumbar support. At home off-road as much as it is on, the Skoda Yeti offers a compelling package of European styling, versatility and practicality. Little touches, such as the Varioflex seating, which can be quickly reconfigured from a five-seater to a van-style storage area, will appeal to parents, surfers, shoppers and cyclists. What’s more, so will the pricing! For more information on the all new Skoda Yeti or to arrange a test drive, contact Barbagallo Skoda Mandurah on 9587 9999 or visit their showroom at 140 Pinjarra Road.

MCI Scooters Beat the bowser blues!

With continuing upward pressures on fuel prices, it was no surprise that in 2011 Australia saw a significant growth in the sale of twowheeled vehicles. Recent figures published by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) showed a year on year increase in sales in the final quarter of last year of around 20% with sales of scooters increasing by almost 10% during 2011. Scooters, of course, have in recent times become an incredibly popular mode of personal transport. As motorists seek to avoid high petrol prices and increasingly congested metropolitan roads, many have switched to cheaper methods of getting around town. But the scooter has also benefitted from a new found coolness. With a whole culture based around owning and riding a scooter, in part influenced by the British mod scene of the ‘60s, the scooter is not only cheap to run it is also the height of on-road fashion. Well for fans of scooters, the good news is that the biggest selling brand in Australia, MCI Scooters, is now available in Bunbury. Stocked by Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre, the range starts from just $1590.00 drive away and each model includes a 2 year warranty and full parts and service backup. Ideal for the first time bike owner, the scooters can also be driven on a car licence.

One of the most popular vehicles in the range is the MCI Riviera LJ50QT. Fitted with a 2-stroke, single cylinder 49cc engine, the scooter comfortably seats 2 adults and carries a maximum payload of 242kg. Available in 4 different colours, the bike comes with disc brakes, has an electric or kick start and a 5 litre fuel capacity. With a net weight of just 87kg, it is light, easy to manoeuvre and stylish. Impressive reliability together with its excellent value for money completes a perfect around town package. For further information on the range of MCI Scooters or to arrange a test drive, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033. 34

property & ďŹ nance

Talking By Lee Property York Since my last update six months ago, I have some good news! In Dunsborough, we have experienced a steady increase in buyer activity, especially from fly-in-fly-out workers, resulting in a decrease in the number of properties currently listed for sale. The south west market generally follows that of the westerns suburbs of Perth and, based on the decrease in the number of homes listed for sale over the last six months in the metro area (currently sitting at around 13,500 properties, down from its peak of over 18,000 properties in April 2011), I believe we are moving towards a more level playing field in the residential property market. REIWA statistics indicate the number of homes listed for sale in the metro area needs to be around 12,000 for the market to be in equilibrium. However, with a fast growing population and with a lack of new land developments, at the current projected census figures, we could well be facing a housing shortage. It has also been encouraging to see a return of buyers at the higher end of the market with our office achieving 5 sales between $2m and $4.5m and a further 5 between $1m and $2m in the period from 25th January to mid April 2012. The highest demand is for properties with ocean views, which are achieving an even higher than normal premium over those without. Many buyers are looking for quality established homes and, particularly in the lower end of the market, often forgoing position to achieve that, although there has also been a small increase in premium land sales. Currently, for buyers looking to purchase property in the Dunsborough, Eagle Bay and

Yallingup areas, the best value to be found is in the higher end of the market. The gap between the bottom end and the mid to high end of the market is at its lowest percentage difference than its been for over 10 years. Hardly surprising when the average percentage drop at the lower end of the market over the past 5 years has been between 15% and 20% whereas at the higher end of the market falls in value have been as high as 50% in some cases. Take Advantage of Lower Interest Rates We talk to Paul Jennings,

owner of leading mortgage broker Aussie Geographe

Q: What does the recent rate drop mean for borrowers? A: I welcome the Reserve Bank’s recent 0.5 per cent drop in official interest rates even though, as expected, in most cases borrowers didn’t have the full amount passed on from their banks. The Reserve Bank had little choice but to cut rates after recent inflation figures showed a slowing economy and a need for renewed confidence amongst consumers. It should offer a timely boost to the nonmining related areas of the economy at a time when Australia is still susceptible to more shocks flowing from the continuing global financial crisis. It should also help to allay fears over the job security of many Australians who continue to not spend while the spectre of new taxes and the tough Federal budget hangs over them. Following the cut, there are a range of actions borrowers could take. For those who can afford it, borrowers could maintain existing repayment levels or switch to fortnightly payments to help pay down their mortgages. Alternatively, they could seek out new loans from providers that passed on the full rate drop. Q: Is it worth changing lenders if they do not pass on the full rate cut? A: As a general rule, it is worth switching if you can get a mortgage that is at least 0.5 per cent lower than your current rate. Our research shows that more than 50 per cent of our customers achieve up to a 0.75 per cent saving by switching lenders, however, every situation is different so it is important to weigh up the cost of refinancing and whether it is the best thing for the individual. Plus, although the Federal government abolished exit fees on 1st July 2011, unless the borrower has signed a recent mortgage deal, the ban on exit fees will not apply. Therefore, chasing the lowest rate

doesn’t always equal the best deal. Ensure potential exit fees are included when considering switching loans as it may actually be a more costly exercise than first thought. In addition, there may also be Lenders Mortgage Insurance payable, which also needs to be included in any calculations. Q: Is it a good time to fix rates? A: I believe fixed rates are in a great spot at the moment and for those wanting certainty over repayments at a comparably low rate it is probably time to move. Currently, there are a bunch of three year fixed rate loans in the market at around 6 per cent. That is a pretty good saving against the average standard variable rate and will allow borrowers to budget over years, not months, compared with variable loans. However, remember fixed rate loans are inflexible in terms of repayments and lock borrowers in for a fixed number of years. In many cases, lump sum repayments are not allowed and there are also high costs for exiting early. With these limitations, I suggest the best way to take advantage of the low fixed rates is to split loans between fixed and variable rates. There is not a huge saving in splitting loans but it gives some certainty about repayments and a competitive rate. It is also possible to access a range of features associated with variable loans such as offset accounts. For those considering moving lenders, always contact a registered mortgage broker to discuss your individual situation. Aussie Geographe’s team of mortgage advisers are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for a free consultation at your home or at their office. Located at 103 Queen St, Busselton, contact them on 9751 2155 or 0427 522 861. 42

Artgeo Cultural Complex Cultural precinct opens for business!

After years in the planning, Busselton is now home to an exciting new cultural precinct, an artistic hub for both locals and visitors to enjoy. At the northern end of the precinct is the Artgeo Complex with its two galleries, the Old Post Office Tearooms and a host of artists and arts groups associated with the area while at the southern end is the Weld Theatre. The precinct was officially opened in March with Culture on Queen, a street party with a family feel. The area came alive with two stages full of performing artists, street theatre with singers and dancers, food vendors and a host of exhibitions and demonstrations from the galleries and arts based groups in the area. As the twilight descended, the in-ground lighting was switched on for the first time and the heritage buildings and peppermint trees 48

were bathed in coloured lights. This fabulous vision can now be appreciated by all each night, giving an exciting new feel to the area after dark. The precinct has also been designed to be closed to traffic during particular events. As the area becomes better known, it is anticipated that it will be the venue for many events and festivals in the town. There’s also plenty to see all year round at Artgeo. Both the Artgeo and Courthouse Galleries continue to showcase the best in locally made artworks. These great finds are on offer 7 days a week in the Courthouse Gallery between 10am and 4pm and have found their way to plenty of homes all across the world. The Artgeo Gallery is the flagship of the area. Each month, discover a new exhibition, providing visitors with a constant diet of arts based delicacies. Forthcoming exhibitions include painter June Anderson in June followed by a touring photographic show by Richard Woldendorp in July. August sees the return of a season of free films from the Australian/French film festival CinefestOZ. For more information on these exhibitions, go online at www.artgeo.com.au

Who’s Red Cloud New? Art Space

Opening night at Red Cloud Art Space

Yallingup is now home to an exciting new art gallery showcasing a range of affordable art from both established and emerging international and Australian artists. The brainchild of Jenny and Stacey Wood and Lewis Snelling, the refurbishment and creation of Red Cloud Art Space began in October of last year and a successful opening night held at the end of April resulted in almost 40 pieces being sold. Specialising in resin, ceramics, ceramic sculpture, canvas, clay animation, fashion photography, and light sculpture, all art is hand made and predominantly original. Artworks currently on display come from a variety of countries, including France, USA, New Zealand and Australia. With many of the artists personally known to the team, Red Cloud offers art lovers the opportunity to customise pieces and order originals from the featured artists. The team

also works closely with the artists to help realise some of their creative ideas. Featured artist Jason Kelly was recently commissioned by the team to create some of his hand cut surf boards based on scenes from the capes region. The result was 3 original pieces depicting local scenes, which in turn has lead to interest in creating other surf breaks from around the world. Red Cloud also works closely with artists Ronald Andreassend and Karen Chan to help make a range of customised resin lights and ceramic sculpture lights. These are available to purchase at the gallery or originals can be designed for specific requirements. To view the range of artworks on display, visit Red Cloud Art Space at 40 Hemsley Road, Yallingup. The gallery is open every day (except Tuesday) from 11am to 6pm and is just 5 minutes from both Yallingup and Dunsborough.

Talking Photography

with Geoff Hodgson M8 Photography Taking a great surfscape image can be so rewarding when it all comes together. A good quality lens (around 2.8mm) will help when shooting in low light conditions and will also help when it comes to printing later. It’s personal preference on whether you use a wide angle or zoom lens. Remember the rule of thirds. Find a good place for the horizon and make sure it’s level to save editing later. The key is to have some good waves and some good lighting but if the lighting and the colours aren’t so great, or if you are suffering from hazy horizons, there is always another option. In situations like this, I love to turn the images into black and white.

With Photoshop it’s easy. Just go to the top menu bar, click on image, select adjustments and then scroll down to click on black and white. Colour tints can also be adjusted to suit and the adjustments menu bar also allows for the brightness and contrast to be changed as well. Featured are a couple of black and white shots. Top: Castle Bay a rocking! Below: Yallingup shores on a super morning! I love these black and white images and their timeless feel. Stay warm through winter. Happy snapping!

Wildflower Country by Stanley Breeden

Our eyes will always enable us to see more than a photograph can show us. More shadow, more highlights, more depth – more ‘real’. However, the use of incredible high-end digital photography in creating Wildflower Country appears to have discovered a wonderful way to capture sharp 3D pictures that are so mesmerising and luminous that the visual experience is as it is in real life. The book is alive with vibrant pages that are incredibly tempting to touch. Stanley and Kaisa Breeden spent six years perfecting their photographic techniques in order to draw the reader into the rich biodiversity of the south west corner of Western Australia. Uniquely, each of their photographs is the result of combining several images that vary only in their depth of field. The resulting pictures are then in focus from front right through to back. This is a book that is spectacular in its study of the Southwest Botanical Province. Realistic images are accompanied by Stanley’s text, which names plants and places, explains photographic challenges and offers a rich insight into the couple’s journey. From Shark Bay down to the southern coast of WA, it is a book to be visually devoured.

Truth Like the Sun by Jim Lynch

Back in 1962, Roger Morgan is riding the rollercoaster of the Seattle World Fair. Life is buzzing, chaotic and intoxicating as he promotes the spectacle while simultaneously witnessing the metamorphosis of Seattle itself against a backdrop of uncertainty in the world. He is young, relentlessly charismatic and wins over everyone, almost, with his charm. Flip forward forty years and Morgan is 70 years old and still wooing the public as he tries his hand at becoming the next Mayor of Seattle, intent on returning the city to its former glory. Putting a spanner in the works is Helen Gulanos, who, young and new to the town, desperately wants to make her mark as a credible journalist and is attempting to find the ‘real’ Roger Morgan. Delving into the depths of the bribery and cardhouses of 1962, Gulanos digs and digs, determined to find something to pin on him. The more the pages are turned, the deeper the reader is enveloped in the feeling that something huge is unfolding. There’s a sense of anticipation and excitement as the chapters flip back and forth from 1962 to 2001, building up momentum. The third novel by Jim Lynch, Truth Like the Sun is a fast-paced, compelling read interwoven with poignant insights into the characters and times of now and then. The above books were supplied by Barefoot Books, Busselton’s leading independent bookshop. Visit the store at Shop 23, Fig Tree Lane, Busselton, or call 9751 3905. 55

Bar Crusher The Boats fisherman’s

Maintenance is made simple with a welded-in, sealed floor, using the Bar Crusher Rigidek™ system. In addition to the added toughness provided, the floor is quick and easy to maintain requiring just a simple hose out after use. With no small cavities around the edges and underneath the floor, say goodbye to trapped old fishing tackle, old bait and bad smells for ever! Offering a range of boats catering for the day tripper right up to the serious fisho, the Bar Crusher brand has something available for all types of on-water activities. The new 535CR (Cuddy/Runabout) is an excellent entry level boat for those either new to boating or for those seeking to step up to a larger yet compact easy-to-tow and easy-to-store package. Rated to carry a 70-100hp outboard and with a 90 litre fuel capacity, it offers fantastic value for money. The flagship of the range is the 780HT, designed and built for long-range offshore sport fishing. With an overall length of 7.8m and a beam of 2.47m, this seriously tough vessel can be fitted with a 300hp engine and comes with a standard 300 litre fuel tank or with an optional 450 litre fuel capacity. It combines the ocean-going capability of a flybridge gameboat with the manoeuvrability and versatility offered only by a trailerable vessel. For further information on the range of Bar Crusher Boats, visit exclusive Bunbury dealer Millard Marine and Motorcycle Centre at 5 Sandridge Road, or call 9721 3033.

ideal companion!

Owned and operated by brothers Peter and Warren Cleland, Melbourne based Bar Crusher Boats have quickly built up a reputation for manufacturing safe, strong and reliable fishing boats. As some of the most advanced plate aluminium boats on the market, their cutting edge design and construction has created a range of craft that deliver a super-smooth ride in tough sea-going conditions as well as impressive stability at rest. Designed with a deep v-hull with between 18 and 20 degrees of deadrise at the transom, depending on the model, these tough and durable boats are capable of cutting through even the biggest of swells. However, unlike most other similarly designed deep v-hulls that struggle to offer stability when stationary, Bar Crusher Boats come complete with the highly innovative QuickFlow™ water ballast system. This system features a cavity running the full length of the keel that opens at the transom. When the boat comes to a stop the cavity fills, lowering the chines into the water and cleverly providing ballast and instant stability. Once the boat moves forward, the water is jettisoned from the hull, allowing the boat a smooth and fast transition onto the plane. Practical no-nonsense boating also comes hand in hand with the on-water performance. 56

the great outdoors Here are their top ten tips, recommended by coach Susan Brooks, to skate yourself to good health:1. Sleep well and eat nutritiously. Give yourself plenty of pre-exercise energy. 2. Get into the right mood. Before you jump into your skates, add a glide to your step by grooving to upbeat music or skate with friends to make the experience really enjoyable. 3. Other people matter. Find a skating buddy to keep you enthused and motivated. 4. Grow your knowledge. Reach for small, achievable goals that will boost your selfefficacy. Participate in lessons, either private or in classes, to boost your co-ordination and confidence. This is particularly recommended for beginners. 5. Planning to skate outside? See yourself flying down the cycle path with your MP3 on? Outdoor inline skating is fun but again take some lessons and get your skills up to enjoy skating outdoors safely. 6. Get in flow. Break down each session into smaller episodes, matching the challenge to your next skill set while practising regularly what you have already achieved. Regularly assess your progress and apply your full concentration to the activity, congratulating yourself when you do well. 7. Enjoy the burn. Don’t be afraid to feel your heart rate go up and learn to love the burn in your muscles. Don’t just sit on the side and watch.

Inline Skating

Get fit and have fun!

Skating is becoming an increasingly popular sport and an increasingly popular way of getting fit. Great fun, inexpensive and accessible, the health benefits of skating are wide-ranging plus it can make for a great social outing with friends. If it’s a healthier lifestyle you are after, then there are plenty of positives to be gained. Regular skating improves aerobic fitness, tones whilst building stronger, more stable pelvis, hip and leg muscles, improves endurance and reduces body fat. Interested in finding out more about skating? Well, the good news is that Bunbury is home to The Rink, one of the leading national skating centres. Operating for over 10 years, the centre provides skating activities suitable for all ages and skating abilities.

8. Involve your mind and your body.

Keep learning! Learn more about the basic skills at the regular classes and participate in artistic, inline hockey, derby and speed skating. 9. Reliable knowledge. Talk to a qualified instructor about equipment. Do you need to purchase your own, if so, when? What is the level of your skills and what type do you need? How much protective gear will you need to help you learn that next step?

10. Get good mind fuel after exercise.

Exercise facilitates brain cell growth and while your muscles are recuperating after the effort,

Immediately, I found I was good at something and people believed in me. What more does any teenager need?! Skating gave me a reason to get fit, a way to become focused on my goals and a community to belong to.” Her relationship with Bunbury began in 1988 when a local rink was looking for an artistic coach to help with training. For the next 10 years, Susan worked as a selfemployed coach under 2 separate owners before, in 1999, she sourced finance and backing to start her own business in her own venue. Opening The Rink in 1999, the centre now runs general skating sessions, learn to skate classes, artistic, speed, inline hockey and roller derby classes and children’s birthday parties. The Rink also sells a range of skating equipment and is the Australian distributor for EDEA (roller & ice boots from Italy). In recognition of her growing reputation in the industry, in 2010 to 2011, Susan also began a program of training other centres to host skating safely classes and to improve equipment knowledge. So is Susan still having fun? “Ha ha, whenever I travel and my passport gets stamped, I’m often asked - skating instructor - that’s not a real job is it?! I would love them to see how many hours I work a week! No, it’s not a real job, it’s about 4 jobs! But I wouldn’t change it for anything!” Located at Gibbons Road, Davenport, for further information on inline skating at The Rink, call 9725 6999 or visit www.therink.com.au for general skating and class times.

your brain is actively busy building new synapses. What you do post-exercise is essential in reaping the full benefits of your activity. So too is what you consume. By following the above, you will be not only be stimulating the mind but also following the Heart Foundations recommendation for good health. 30 minutes (adults) or 60 minutes (children) of physical activity every day of the week.

Meet Susan Brooks, owner of The Rink The list of accomplishments on the CV of The Rink’s owner, Susan Brook, makes for impressive reading. Unfortunately, we don’t have room in the publication to mention them all! Having started skating at age 12, Susan was selected for the first ever WA state team and was national champion in 1986 before embarking on her 22 year coaching career that has included her working as an international judge, freeskating seminar presenter and national coach. “Basically, I am the live your passion type,” explained Susan, “I left school at 15 to skate and you can imagine what people thought of that! Skin Cancer Reducing the risk By Dr Carolyn Bracken

everyone regularly checks all areas of their skin. Regular checking will make you alert to new or changing moles or spots and will familiarise yourself with how your skin behaves. Although melanomas are fatal, around 95% can be treated if removed early so regular checking is vital. If you have a suspicious spot, or if would like to reassure yourself and get a skin check, then winter is a great time to visit your local skin cancer clinic. Not only do tanned skin changing skin lesions become more visible but with most treatments requiring patients to stay out of the water, the cooler months are the perfect time to have that check up. You will also find it easier to hide dressings under winter clothing and there’s no competing with holiday makers for an appointment time! Dr Carolyn Bracken at the Busselton Skin Cancer Clinic is a member of the Skin Cancer College Australasia, lives in the town and has been practising locally for 10 years. Her clinic is equipped with advanced diagnostic technology equipment, including a Molemax machine that can record photographic imagery during a full body skin assessment. As a private practice, the clinic has electronic links to Veterans Affairs and Medicare and no referral is required prior to an appointment. To arrange an appointment, call 9752 1555 or visit the clinic at 49 Peel Terrace, Busselton.

Australia has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world. Our close proximity to the equator, clear skies and depleted ozone layer give us some of the highest ultraviolet radiation levels to be found anywhere. Did you know that skin cancers account for 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers, that 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the time they are 70 and that there is a staggering 1 in 22 lifetime risk that a WA male will develop a melanoma (1 in 66 in the UK)? Of course, anyone can develop skin cancer but certain groups will always be at greater risk. For example, those who have worked outdoors, spent a lot of time in the sun or have a history in the family of skin cancer are considered high risk. Also included in this group are those with fair skin, blue or green eyes and fair or red hair, those who got sunburnt as a child or those who have a large number of freckles or moles. The Cancer Council of WA recommends that 66

Pulling in the Abdominals

How to use your abdominal muscles to achieve core strength and stability By Andree Lupton

A strong back works with the abs

Pulling in the abdominals is fundamental to the Pilates method of exercise. It is a technique that is promoted in physical therapy settings, in strength training and throughout the fitness world as a means of stabilising the spine. Done correctly, training the abdominals will create an integrated core of strength that supports the spine and facilitates stability and freedom of motion throughout the body. Pilates is about creating a strong, stable foundation for movement. The movement is developed by employing the pelvic floor muscles and the abdominal muscles and teaching them to work efficiently and in harmony with the muscles of the back. It also puts a special emphasis on training the deeper abdominal muscles and the muscles of the pelvic floor. These muscles are often underdeveloped and not working equally with the overworked surface muscles. The inner mechanics of creating a stable core do not begin at the belly button, but with engaging the muscles of the pelvic floor.

Pulling in the abs is usually done with a neutral spine. That means that the natural curves of the spine are present and pull-in does not create a forward flexion of the upper spine or a tuck of the pelvis. As the abs pull in, it is essential to maintain both length and breadth in the back as the muscles are challenged to counter the pull of the abdominals. Pilates does use forward flexion and a flat or curved lower back for many exercises but those are choices made for specific exercise intentions beyond the initial pulling in of the abs. In general, a neutral spine is the strongest position required for effective movement.

How to breathe in abdominal work

In Pilates, we allow the breath to fully expand into the sides and down the back of the body. Doing so provides breathing room and helps open and lengthen the back of the body.

When to pull in the abdominals

Working the pelvic floor muscles is not just for women bouncing back after pregnancy. The engagement of the muscles of the pelvic floor is critical to providing a stable base movement for anyone.

During exercise, the abdominal pull-in can be used intensely as a training tool. The idea is that the muscles will become stronger and their interactivity better organised, meaning everyday movement, or even athletic movement, is easily supported. As one develops a stronger core, the muscles become more toned and ready for action.

Pull in and scoop the abdominals

Integrating the abdominal workout

Use the pelvic floor

After the pelvic floor is engaged, the actual pull-in begins above the pubic bone - becoming a deep pull-in of the lower abdominals. From there, the pull-in action progresses upwards, pulling the belly button to the spine and then the upper abdominal area. Next, some experience an upward lift of the abdominals; a true scoop of the abs. These moves are not as obviously sequential as they sound, but a bottom to top awareness is the best way to engage the abdominals properly.

Pulling in the abdominals is just part of the set up for developing strength and efficient motion in Pilates. It’s important to look at the whole picture through aligning all body parts, utilising breath correctly and focusing on achieving the full benefits of each exercise. To make Pilates a complementary training part of your weekly exercise regime, contact Andree Lupton at New Life Private Fitness Studio, Suite 8, 236 Naturaliste Terrace, Dunsborough on 0403 122668. 70

Beauty Talk Refresh your look this winter!

International runways have yet again inspired beautiful new makeup trends, ensuring that the following winter months are going to be anything but dull. Metallic fabrics are big in winter fashion and are perfectly complemented by the luminescence and sparkle of this season’s eye makeup. Use bronze, copper, gold, a metallic olive or plum to recreate the classic smoky eye. Be careful not to go glittery, the look works best if the shadow has a smooth shimmer and iridescence. Finish eyes with black liner to the top lid and plenty of mascara. Or, for a lighter and younger take on the smoky eye, leave lower lashes bare. And so that the eyes are the centre of attention, choose a soft nude lipstick. Catwalks were also full of the richness and warmth of jewel tones and eye makeup followed suite with shades of opulent blues. Models stepped out with deep lapis blue lashes or with shades of light blue and topaz swept onto their lids. These lighter blues come into their own when paired with a subtle peachy gloss on the lips. Blue shadow is a nod back to the 1950’s, as is another trend for winter eyes – the cat eye. It’s a sharp look that requires a very steady hand for applying liquid black liner with absolute accuracy. But, breathe a sigh of relief, new cat eyes are simpler and easier to achieve. Flicks are blunter so that there is a smaller triangle of accent to the outer upper edge of the eye. With a bit of practice, there’s ultimately less fuss and less room for error! Matte stained lips are not only relatively maintenance free (once applied, the stain lasts for hours), they are also a beauty-must for winter. Bordeaux, claret, pinot noir and other deep red wine colours can be applied with your finger for a natural look or painted on

with a cotton tip or brush applicator for more accuracy and effect. Try going for a sheer lipstick in a plum or purple shade if you are not used to the matte feel of a stain. These are very popular colour choices for this winter and also, being sheer, can be layered for more intense evening impact. As winter fashion is set to be dramatic and rich in its texture and gemstone colours, go for nails in nude, subtle sheer grey or peachy tones for contrast. Or, complement this season’s colour palette, and opt for purple, deep eggplant and wonderfully velvety navy.

menu with a sense of high anticipation. Having been recommended a bottle of Fattoria Zerbina Ceregio Sangiovese, a delightful dry red from Alan’s childhood area of Romagna, our host then proceeded to allow us to sample a range of dishes on the menu. To begin with, we were offered a fabulous selection of delights taken from the Antipasti menu. Highlights included a delicious Mousse Di Caprino, goat’s cheese mousse topped with apple and orange honey, and a succulent Cappesante Con Crema Di Piselli e Pancetta, pan-fried scallops with pea cream and pancetta. A lack of space prohibits us from eulogising further but, suffice to say, if you are a fan of traditional, authentic Italian flavours there’s plenty of tempting entrées on offer. Moving on, we sampled my favourite, Strozzapreti Alla Pescatora, La Casina’s take on a seafood pasta ragout. The difference being that Strozzapreti pasta is made with flour and water and, uniquely, no eggs, to give a light and flavoursome take on a more traditional spaghetti. The Ravioli Di Spinaci e Ricotta, homemade spinach and ricotta ravioli with sunflower seeds, pesto and parmesan, also got the thumbs up before we tucked into a magnificent Bistecca Di Manzo, grilled beef rib-eye with layered potatoes, snow peas and a sundried tomato tapenade. We finished as we began with a mixed tasting plate. Dessert treats included a Mascarpone Mousse, Biscotti and Homemade Prune and Apricot Tart. A wonderful end to a thoroughly enjoyable meal! With their friendly attentive service, a warm welcoming ambience and delicious food, expect the reputation of La Casina to continue to grow. We will certainly be back!

Located in a beautiful semi-rural setting halfway between Dunsborough and Yallingup, La Casina offers diners picturesque, tranquil surroundings together with plenty of rustic charm. The restaurant is also under new ownership so another good reason to visit! Arriving for dinner, we were greeted at the door by owner Alan Fenati. Born in the Romagna region of Italy, Alan has a rich background in the restaurant and hospitality business having worked in both Italy and London. In London, he worked for some of the city’s finest establishments, including Michelin Star-rated restaurants, and it was here he met Nicola, an Australian chef who later became his wife. Alan and Nicola eventually returned to Perth before relocating to Dunsborough and since the turn of the year the couple have quickly made their mark on the Dunsborough restaurant scene at La Casina. Restaurant Review Evviva Café

A favourite haunt of both locals and visitors to the area, Evviva Café is one of Dunsborough’s most popular eateries. Renowned for its all day breakfasts, freshly made lunchtime meals, juices and coffee, the café with its central location and picturesque garden offers a delightful spot from which to watch the world go by. Definitely time we paid it a visit! The very freshest ingredients are most certainly the order of the day at Evviva. Owner Kellie Fossati, who celebrates 10 years at the helm this year, has always been keen to source not only high quality ingredients but also, where possible, local produce. Much of her food is sourced from local farmers’ markets with seasonal dishes strongly featured on the menu. There is an ever-changing selection on offer with a number of new daily specials always available. Arriving for lunch, I certainly had my eye on the specials board! With mushrooms in season, I had no hesitation in selecting from that very board. I chose the Stuffed Field Mushrooms served with porchini mushroom risotto and garnished with pistachio nuts, parmesan and salsa verde. And what a fabulous combination it was with the mouth-watering flavours of the mushrooms working perfectly with the al dente rice and crunch of the nuts. A great choice although I have to say I was very tempted by another special, Roasted Eggplant and Tomato Soup, served with fresh parmesan and mini feta muffins. Each day at Evviva, you will also find a tasty selection of salads. On the menu the day of my visit was a Sweet Chilli Chicken Salad, Korean

Beef Salad and Haloumi Cheese and Lemon Salad. For those after a more substantial lunch, the menu also offers up a range of burgers all served on Turkish bread. Try the homemade hamburger, free range chicken burger, fish burger or lentil burger all served with fresh carrot, beetroot, cucumber, tomato, mesculin lettuce and chips. For those in a hurry, there is also a selection of sandwiches made to order. To accompany my meal, I had to try one of the café’s famous fresh juices. I sampled a zingy Lemon, Ginger and Apple concoction which proved to be both light and wonderfully refreshing. As well as a number of other equally refreshing and healthy sounding juices, Evviva also serves up a great range of smoothies, slushies and milkshakes. And while we are on the subject of drinks, let’s not forget the huge range of teas and coffees, including a fantastic sounding tea, Cleopatra’s Champagne, infused with chamomile flowers, rose petals and lavender buds! To finish with, I sipped on a Soy Latte and did what any self-respecting daytime Dunsborough diner does – took five, relaxed and enjoyed the warm afternoon sun. Now what about another one of those fresh juices!

Matching Wine

Matching Wine Where to start?

Willow Bridge E

There’s never been a better time to be enjoying food and wine in Australia. Our eating out choices span every type of international cuisine from Asia to Europe and from the Americas to Africa with our own modern take on cuisine inspired and heavily influenced by our neighbours. Our supermarkets are also full of more fresh local produce then ever before along with offerings from countries far and wide. Our wine has also come of age. In Western Australia, we enjoy a fantastic array of different wines produced primarily in the Margaret River region but also in our fast growing Geographe wine region, home to the picturesque Ferguson Valley. All that is left for us to do is to combine the food and wine successfully. More choice can mean more confusion but more choice should also mean the chance to discover new combinations further to classic ones. The main thing is that it should be great fun trying! When it comes to pairing the right wine with food, in Australia, feel free to throw away the

rule book. We are a nation influenced by many different cultures and as such are not so hung up over historical behaviours or national dishes. There’s a free spirit in the kitchens and cellars in many parts of Australia that drives adventure and discovery, meaning that it’s important not to get too hung up on issues,

such as the colour of wine when trying to complement a dish. There is, however, a strong argument to match food and wine from the same region. It’s no secret that some of the best cuisine in the world happens in some of the finest winegrowing regions. Places where wine is often extremely prevalent in the cooking process. Ultimately, it comes down to two schools of thought - complement or contrast. The complement approach is all about striking a harmony between the flavours and textures on the plate and in the glass or matching the weight of the wine, whether full, medium or light-bodied, to the weight of the dish. An example of this would be to serve a full-bodied Shiraz with a grilled fillet of beef. The contrast approach operates under the premise that opposites attract and brings together food and wine that have contrasting traits to aim to strike a balance of flavour intensity and texture through their interaction. An example of this is to match a crisp, acidic Sauvignon Blanc with a fish served with a

creamy lemon sauce. The idea here is that the crisp acidity of the wine serves as a contrast that can cut through the creaminess of the sauce to give a refreshing sensation to the palate. Of course, if you are to regularly choose the right food and wine combinations successfully, an understanding of the basic tastes of wine, i.e. sweet, bitter and sour, is highly important. Quite often, much of what we believe to be the taste is, in fact, the aromas of the wine, such as floral, fruit or spice. And aside from the basic taste of wine, the weight and intensity, or texture of a wine is another important factor in food and wine pairing. Plus, don’t forget, the best match should always be a personal preference. Enjoy sampling lots of different combinations until you find ones that you are happy with. In short, the best choice will be the one that pleases your palate the most. In part 2, published in our next edition, we take a look at specific food and wine pairings.

The history of the property goes back over 150 years and after starting life as a coach inn for travellers between Perth and Margaret River, some years later, the property became a dairy. During this period, seamen sheltering at Smith’s Beach, regularly purchased vegetables grown in the valley’s rich and alluvial soil. In 1970, the surrounding land was found to be rich in mineral sands but fortunately, before mining commenced, the government intervened and declared it an ‘A’ zone national park. Shortly afterwards, in 1980, current owner Craig Brent-White stepped in and purchased the land. With the first vines planted in 1997, over the past 15 years, the winery has been the recipient of numerous awards and plenty of rave reviews for its three distinct brands of wine; The Cape Naturaliste Collection, Torpedo Rocks Collection and Reserve Collection. Current highlights include the 2010 Semillon

Sauvignon Blanc, awarded 4.5 stars in the 2011 James Halliday Wine Companion and the 2011 Sauvignon Blanc, which won a silver medal at the Perth Royal Wine Show, the Quantas Wine Show of WA and at the Rutherglen Wine Show. However, by far and away the most impressive award recently won by the vineyard was for its 2009 Torpedo Rocks Cabernet Merlot. Beating a host of entries from around the world, the wine took out Best Red from a Single Vineyard at the International Wine and Spirit Convention held in London. A major coup not only for the vineyard but also for Western Australian wine in general. With a clear vision to preserve the beauty of the valley with a bio-dynamic philosophy, plant health is monitored carefully and ground quality improvement constantly strived for. Grapes are hand-picked, basket pressed and barrel fermented and wines are aged in French oak barrels for 24 months and further laid down in bottle for up to two years before the first point of sale. Visit Cape Naturaliste Vineyard at 1 Coley Road (entrance off Caves Road) Yallingup. The cellar door is open 7 days from 10.30am to 5.00pm. 82
